NATS Mini Ranger, 2025. Presented at the Tokyo Auto Salon, a one-off created by NATS college students that is a miniature version of the Dakar-conquering Hino Ranger truck. The project uses the ladder frame chassis from the 2nd-generation Suzuki Jimny with bodywork from the 9th-generation cab-over Suzuki Carry. It is powered by a a 657cc Suzuki engine, remaining true to it's kei-van origins.

last week's session was a real one
close-ups below cut!
Rogue found a bed, climbed in and hid under the covers. "That's fair," said the Paladin, and joined him.
It is revealed that the Wizard has made a terrible, terrible choice of the "deal with a demon" variety. Possessed, began Magic-Missiling people until taken down by the Barbarian and Ranger.
Lack of owlbear minis did not stop us â a piano fills in nicely. NPC cleric leapt atop the ravening furniture and began casting Power Word: In Da Groin (which exists?) indiscriminately. Barbarian and Cleric decided not to interfere.
The Rogue is possessed as well, but taken down by a flying tackle from the Ranger before he could harm anyone. Now looking at this image, I realise... I left off my own fucking tail.
A terribly-timed Nat 1 from the Paladin caught the Cleric unawares and left him unimpressed. The fact that she rolled full damage on a leaping attack with an enchanted halberd that let her double all damage only added salt to the wound. Note: he's a bear. He's meant to be a bear. It's only your imagination that he looks exactly like the Wolf Hunter.
The Paladin herself.
And our intrepid crew! Cleric, Barbarian, Rogue, Wizard, Paladin, Ranger.
#juan should not be allowed near pad paper either#juan's dnd#so excited for session tonight everything is going to hell

⨠Crain Family Game Night Headcanons â¨
Thank you to @red--opti for listening to my rambles and coming up with headcanons with me. Youâre awesome :)
-The Crain Family over the years if they ever got together would host family game nights almost every time they hung out at Shirleyâs. Monopoly was absolute chaos, donât get them started on Uno eitherâShirleyâs always going to claim Luke or Theo cheats (Theo and Luke swear they donât).
-When Theo comes home from college one time, she suggests playing Dungeons & Dragons (DnD). Nellâs immediately interested.
-She got into it from a friend (which was more of a situationship deal) and found it to be extremely interesting after touching a mini figurine one timeâsensing those feelings and connections people get from that gameâŚeventually, even without touching a figurine, she becomes very skilled at itâit intrigues her a lot. (Credit to Red)
-She doesnât have to reveal any deep thing about herself. DnD became a positive outlet for her and her abilities other than encounters with women. She wonders how she can help people and see if she can gain any more positive experiences with her powers, so she decides to go into Psychology and see if her powers can benefit her there too. (Credit to Red)
-She vibe checks peopleâs dice too! Mainly because she knows which dice roll well due to her abilities. She loves it. (Credit to Red)
-Of course, after suggesting this to The Crains, they decide to try a one-off session. Theoâs a DM, Shirley hates it, Steve doesnât see its importance, he thinks whatever heâs doing is better. Luke loved it until a really big battle actually scared him, and Nell was 100% on board and obsessed with it. (Credit to Red)
-Luke and Theo played as rogues 100%
-So, it didnât exactly work out that timeâwhich was fine. Theo later on tells Allie and Jayden about it, a little while after she gets out of college, and of course they both get into it upon realizing how cool it was. Shirley, upon learning this, goes âYouâre kidding meâŚâ to Theoâs sneaky little smile and giddy response of âNope! Your kids love me even more, this is why Iâm one of the coolest aunts here.â
-Steve later on overhears Theo DMing a game with Luke, Trish, Jayden, and Allie, going wild because someone got a Nat 20. He decides to look into DnD and becomes the best DM in the family. Theoâs more likely to be a player than a DM. (Credit to Red)
-Nell gets voted Most Likely To Travel By Horse 24/7 (Credit to Red)
-Shirley gets bullied into playing DnD with the family. Of course, she Doesnât Get It, but understands it enough that itâs important in family game night and loves to host. (Credit to Red)
-Theo calls it âsisterly bondingâ and Nell laughs every single time
-Allie gets her first Nat 20âof course Theo cheers. Allieâs in awe. She also cheered when Jayden got his first Nat 20 as well.
-Allie gets her first Nat 20 without Theo vibe checking her dice and cheers again, extremely proud of her. (Credit to Red)
-Later on, at some point, the other Crain siblings learn what Theoâs vibe checks mean and they get salty. (Credit to Red)
-It turns into a small argument, but it doesnât matter later on.
-Theoâs first character she ever played as was a Human Rogue. Her favorite class is always Rogue, Sorcerer, or Warlock when playing. She likes causing a little mischief but not too much.
-Steve wouldnât admit it but he likes playing as a Bard. Heâd mostly go for Wizard though.
-Nell loves Druids!!! She also loves Clerics. Sheâs always going for one or the other.
-Shirley, even though she doesnât play often, might go for classes that seem more easier for her to manage. She ends up playing as a Fighter, Barbarian, and Ranger all at different points. She likes the Barbarian class surprisingly. Eventually though, she becomes more interested in Rangers and Monks.
-Luke really enjoys playing as Rogues, Fighters, and Barbarians but heavily leans to Rogue.
-All in all, despite the horrors and tragedies the family faces, they still have a lot to bond over and have a fantastic time at game night.

For the dnd ask game, 8, 28, and 21. (Memorable nat 20, nat 1, and a mini you've painted)
8. I play a ranger/rogue with a Oathbow and got a nat20 with my sneak attack, hunters mark, on my sworn enemy while using sharpshooter. So total it was 2d8 and 24d6 + 10 from sharpshooter and + 5 from dex. My dm had to make it a fight with multiple phases bc I did so much damage
OH! Also! Same character who can never make a successful charisma based check to save their life (see the next question lol) rolled 2 nat 20 performance checks in a row to pass themself off as a bard and got a noble wizard girlfriend out it (also I killed her husband but she was into it)
28. It was less about the first nat 1 and more about the three more terrible rolls after that were a result of the nat 1. But I rolled the nat 1 on a charisma save then used all 3 luck points to try and succeed.
21. Have three minis! Thatâs Wesley Sparrow (rogue/paladin) Robbie Houdin (wizard) and Little Sparrow (monk)
#meant to answer this a couple days ago lmfao#answered#anon#Iâm very good at starting to paint minis and then not finishing lol

The Royal Reportâ A Crown of Candy Ep 2
Ambush on the Sucrosi Road
And weâre back for our first battle episode! Are you feeling trepid my guys, cause I sure am.
Youâre Dead and Hereâs Your Mini
Youâll remember that, at the end of the episode, the Candia Caravan had stopped in the road because of a fallen tree--the universal fantasy fiction indication for an impending ambush--and Ruby was unceremoniously dropped to zero HP. But donât worry! Brennan is here with all the missing ceremony at the top of this episode! And by ceremony, I mean we get the most graphic, visceral, bloody description of bodily harm weâve ever gotten in an episode of D20 as the arrow pierces her neck and she goes unconscious. In her unconscious state, sheâs on a trapeze, swinging from one bar to another that seems to be either getting closer or farther away. A voice in the inky black that surrounds her tells her to bring it towards her. We fade out from the vision and that brings us into the combat proper.
So thatâs the very chill place this episodes starts.
With Ruby down, everyone else springs into action. Liam does his ranger thing and reveals a hidden enemy--which is like finding a roach in your house: You *know* thereâs no such thing as a single roach. Jet tries to snatch Ruby into the carriage but when she loses her grip, she opts to instead threaten Lapin--Heal my sister or Iâll reveal youâre working for the Sugarplum Fairy--and hop on top of the stopped carriage to use herself to shield her sister from any further damage. She also activates the Locket of the Sweetest Heart--a split friendship locket the two of them have which gives advantage on saving throws if the other person is within 5 feet--so sheâll have help on her next death save which happens right away. She gets a success with two 13s, which gives her 1 save, 1 fail (I assume from getting hit by a second arrow--ranged attacks while down count as a fail and melee attacks count as two. Yikes!).
In her mind, Ruby uses Mage Hand to bring the trapeze bar closer to her and, as she does so, she sees a pair of smiling purple eyes and hears a voice say, âYou are gifted in the ways of the arcane. It seems that my brother has made quite a family for himself.â Ruby gasps. âAre you my aunt?â The voice tells her to take good care of her bow. Sheâll need it.
On Ametharâs turn, he clocks a bunch more hidden archers and hears that theyâre speaking Carnish (the meat language) but (and Jet especially notices this because she speaks Carnish) theyâre speaking it brokenly and with weird (vaguely French-y) accents. And the arrow that hit Ruby is baconsteel, but the archers look weird. Like, itâs less that theyâre made of meat and more like theyâre *wearing* meat, and it smells like itâs rotting (which, hey Brennan? Gross). Somethingâs up.
Amethar, charges out and goes into a rage--pouring cola onto himself and letting the pop rocks of his body explode out (extremely cool flavoring for that), doing 2 points of damage to anyone in the immediate vicinity. Jet, still over Rubyâs unconscious body, narrates this all to her, because Emily Axford never lets a moment for an emotional gut punch go to waste. Â
Amethar gets a Nat 20 with his first attack and hits the nearest enemy hard enough to cut through the meat. Underneath, he smells stinking cheese.Â
But then, itâs the enemiesâ turn and Amethar is absolutely beset. A couple of enemies go after the othersâ but five enemies go for him and all hit, bringing him down to less than a third of his HP in one round of combat (down to 10). And theyâre not messing around. They are really and truly trying to murder him specifically.Â
Thank the Sugarplum Fairy or the Bulb if you prefer that Lapinâs turn is next. He scrambles to the top of the carriage and casts Cure Wounds on Ruby which brings her back to full because first level rogues are so so weak you guys. Lapin goes through the Bulbian motions but Jet, who is closeby, can smell the sugary magic energy from his true patron. She doesnât much care though since it means Rubyâs back and she promises her silence. Lapin also tosses Amethar a d6 of healing with his bonus action.   Â
Theobold hits a nat 20 to do a good bit of damage then action surges and casts Compelled Duel with his sword--Battlepop the Broadscicle--to force the Captain of the attackers (who rolls a Nat 1 save) to 1v1 him to take some heat off of the king.Â
Ruby and Jet are forced to confront the possibility that Lapin and Theobold might be...cool? Really, all the old dudes this fight are kinda badass--Calroy also hits a nat20 and is kicking ass all fight (also, his pants are on point--I think this is only the second time in d20 pants have ended up being *A Thing* (John Feathers) but that still feels like a lot for *pants*).  Â
The fight continues!Â
Jet fights alongside her super proud dad and does a bunch of damage but doesnât quite get a killing blow which she blames on Theoboldâs refusal to teach her one last episode. The brigands continue to strategically try and take out Amethar and Lapin judiciously uses his precious few heals to let him drop and then bring him back instead of blowing all his heals at once--stressful but effective. Also, Sir Theo comes in clutch and uses his shield--Swirldwarden--to, as a reaction, take one of the attacks that would have Fâd him up.
Ruby shoots the leader of the cheese brigands--at this point everyone knows that these are cheese people disguised as meat people--and, spurred on by some new, hazy awareness from her near death experience, uses her once per day grasping arrow (an Arcane Archer ability) to hold the captain in place and make him take damage if he moves. Amethar goes back into a rage after having gone down, teaching us that when he does that, it hits enemies and allies alike. On the baddiesâ turn, the captain tries to move and gets obliterated by Rubyâs arrow. This is super clutch, not just because he was going after Amethar, but he also gave +1d4 to all attacks to all of his guys of which there are/were many.Â
Amethar goes down again and, on his turn, Lapin heals him, and then wrecks some of the brigands with a very un-Bulbian blast of candy energy, though he continues to insist that itâs all above board. On her turn, Jet gives her half of the locket to her dad in case he drops again (not how it really works since it requires attunement but Brennan allows it this time since itâs her dad). One of the attackers tries to hit Jet but between her once-per-day shield with Flickorice and Theo imposing disadvantage, sheâs unscathed.Â
Our Daily Bread
Youâll remember from last episode that the caravan was on their way to meet an Imperial escort. Well, they finally show up to help, led by a young Ceresian Centurion Commander (they confirm later itâs the guy they were supposed to have been meeting--Commander Constano Grissini--wonder if him showing up was like an âafter x rounds of combatâ story event or if it was based on something else). Ruby (very conspicuously) casts Fog Cloud around her dad to try and make it harder for anyone to hit and drop him again. Brennan makes her roll an Insight check and on a 12, tells her nothing which is the most maddening thing a DM can do to you.
With the extra help, theyâre able to end the fight pretty quickly after that without any casualties (tiny violins for Brennan because, lbr, the house always eventually wins--itâs only a matter of time before he gets one of them). Theobold wanted to keep one enemy alive for questioning but the Tartguard didnât quite get the memo and skewered the last guy. Lapin is very suspicious of Grissini but his 23 Insight check tells him this is a straight up guy who would have been ruined if anyone here had died. However, he also notices that Grissini wonât look Ruby in the eye. Calroy quietly comes up to Ruby and tells her that, while she did a good job this fight, things are about to get very complicated and she should be a loooot more careful with any future magic she does. She seems confused by her own abilities and mentions she saw her aunt Lazuli while she was passed out but Calroy shushes her before she says anything else incriminating. It seems we didnât get the full picture of how frowned upon non-Bulbian magic is outside out Candia.Â
Lapin rolls to cover for Ruby with Grissini and says that her magic is Bulbian and Brennan rolls in the Box of Doom to see if he buys it. 10 or higher and he knows somethingâs up. We donât get the result (though it *looked* like a 1) but he either buys it or plays along.
Theobald investigates the area (with help from his living sprinkle/dog Sprinkle who I havenât mentioned before but gives him the help action in battle) but doesnât find any info they didn't already have. However, he does notice that there arenât any steeds around, which he interprets to mean they didnât get there through outlaw means (ie: ride in on your horse, steal a bunch, ride out). Â
Calroy pulls aside Lapin and Theobald and says that even though they may have been able to convince Grissini, all of his men also saw Ruby doing forbidden magic and if word gets out itâll be a problem. They need to make a plan and they need to be very careful about how they tell Amethar because if he finds out they âknow how heâll solve the problem.â
Ominous!     Â
Things Iâm Concerned About
So something I talked about while this episode was happening (and something that Brennan talked about during the talkback afterwards but in slightly different terms) is that the enemy NPC Battle effectiveness has, like, changed from âSaturday Morning Cartoon Minionâ to âArt of War Scholarâ. No one came into this like, âLetâs have an epic fight!â It was like, âWe need to murder one specific guy as quickly as possible.â This isnât a world where you can spend several rounds trying to jump on tables for cool points. This is a world where you need to be paying full attention even when itâs not your turn and everyone figured that out pretty quick. This is the most tense Iâve ever been during a d20 battle episode and this was only the first one! Amethar--the *Barbarian*--dropped THREE times. He ran out of rages which I didnât even know was a thing! The fact that everyone made it out of the battle alive was really a miracle! Like, everyone was strategic and played well but if Ruby hadnât won that Grasping Arrow roll off (Siobhan: I love gambling!), if Lapin hadnât been perfectly placed in the initiative to feed Amethar heals right after he dropped, if just a couple of things had gone differently, they could have been so screwed.Â
Oh, and you know what else? Rezzes donât exist in this world! Like, I think we all kinda figured but we got confirmation this week on Adventuring Party. It makes total sense. It is absolutely the correct choice for the setting. But, God, does it ratchet up every single round of combat. Every single decision. Every one of Lapinâs limited heals. Like, RIP Zac. What a season to play the party healer. Ally and Lou got off easy. (Note: The Spare the Dying cantrip does exist though at least, which isnât a powerhouse spell but itâs not nothing).  Â
Iâm concerned about Jetâs flirting! First Thad now this hot Italian breadstick soldier guy? Like, usually Iâd be like do you girl but, like, romantic entanglements are a quick way to get in a lot of trouble, up to and including death in a world like this! This is the âactions have consequencesâ season!Â
On the exact opposite end of the spectrum, Liam doesnât seem to have any interest in romantic entanglements which doesnât always go over well if youâre a royal. Heâs not directly in line for anything important it seems since he had so many older brothers, so maybe he can skate by. But last episode, Caramelinda did seem to be pushing him a little bit in that direction--saying he could get out of exile earlier if he got hitched--and I feel like thereâs a good chance this becomes a bigger issue for him.
If we have a false flag attack AND and an attempted assassination in episode TWO, what are we escalating to, huh? Where are we going that thatâs where weâre STARTING?Â
I could have mentioned this last episode but Iâm glad I waited until this episode because it underlines the point even better. Iâm *very* concerned about the religious politics of Calorum. In the first episode we got kind of a sense that things were different in Candia versus the rest of the world but this ep it was less of a âsenseâ and more of a concrete fear that someone was about to start gossiping about having seen Goody Ruby with the devil. And we knew from last episode that Lapin is secretly in league with the Sugarplum Fairy but Brennan used the word heretic in the talkback which feels a *lot* more dire but...yeah, is accurate. Plus, one of the girlsâ aunt is St. Citrina, clearly a respected figure in the Bulbian faith, so thereâs obviously Lore to unlock there. Look, a lot of going on and none of it feels very chill. Lapin better keep nailing all of his deception checks. Â
And, to drill down a little deeper, Iâm very concerned that Ruby--who has presumably been told that magic is banned in the rest of the world, decided to illegally cast a spell in front of a ton of people--including Imperials--while loudly shouting âABRACADABRA!â Like, if her impulse control doesnât improve, we are gonna have some *issues*.Â
You know what Iâm concerned about? My continuing relationship with several different food groups if I have to keep hearing graphic descriptions of them fighting each other. I mean, BONES in the CHEESE? *Bones* in the *Cheese*? My forgetting to preheat the oven is the *only* reason I wasnât eating pizza when I heard that line. And the worst part is, with another DM Iâd be like, âThey probably didnât think of the implications.â But this is Brennan so I KNOW he thought of the implications and he was like, âIâM DOING IT ANYWAY.â
Also, while weâre on the implications, I was also concerned--as Theo/Murph was--about Lord Swirlyâs (the ice cream Candian) loyalty considering he is dairy (like the cheese brigands) even though he is Candian. Like, thereâs a *lot* of overlap in different food types and that feels like it could easily get messy. Â
If this fight is an indication, these fights arenât gonna be balanced to be fair. Theyâre balanced to be tactically sound--as in, âWhat would their enemies do to them at this moment?â And, man, I am really dreading the inevitable moment they get hit when theyâre down for the first time. Having to start a fight already down to one third of your HP and having already burned through most of your spell slots is so demoralizing but you know itâs gotta happen! Â
I share Zacâs concerns about their Imperial allies. When he said, âThis is Games of Thrones. It doesnât mean anything,â I felt that.Â
I was reminded of a scene in the trailer which shows what looks to be the PCs in a freezer and now Iâm just full of questions like is a freezer a part of a fridge or its own thing? Is it Calorum or is that like the upper part of the map that cuts off? Is it a death-y no manâs land? Whatâs going on?
So the toughest prof I've ever had was my Constitutional Law professor my 1L year of Law School. She's probably the smartest person I've ever met and so supportive but also super scary. What you need to know about law school grades to understand this story is that they're fake so a B- is like a hard C, a C is like a D, and a D means your professor wants you to die. A professor has to fill out paperwork and justify giving you a D at my school. So we heard a rumor that this professor gave one of her students a D and we were like, "Oh man, even she wouldn't...would she?" So, one day--I think at some kind of event, we're all chilling and we're like, "Professor! Did you *really* give a student a D last year." And she turns to us, glint in her eye, and says, "Who said I only gave out one?" Chills. Absolute chills. Anyway, that is all to say, I'm very much feeling shades of that conversation right now. "Brennan, did you really kill a PC this season?" *Anime Glasses Flash* "Who said I only killed one?"
Lingering Questions
Theobald is an Eldritch Knight, not a Paladin. So he has some magic, but it wouldnât be Bulbian (unless Brennan flavored it that way). Is he also doing arcane magic on the down low or is there some other mechanism for that? (Sidenote: Glad the cast made the gummi berry juice joke when Murph cast Jump on Amethar so I didnât have to.) If he is, gotta say, hiding it *way* better than the others.Â
Curious about exactly what Liamâs favored enemy is. Cause he was getting the bonus for that during this fight but was it because they were bandits or cheese people or archers or what?
Another quick holdover from last episode: Sir Theo rolled a deception check last ep against Ruby's insight upon seeing the princesses training with their new weapons (Theo won with a 19 to her 17) and Brennan gave us no information so itâs like, what was their deal? Past relationship? Past magical relationship (see first point)? Just concerned Ruby is gonna do something stupid with a magic bow in the world where magic is banned?
Five Six More Things
OK, letâs get the most important thing out of the way...my Candysona would be a Mint Chocolate divine soul sorcerer librarian/researcher. Iâm sure ALL of you were wondering.
I really wanna give it up for the crew this episode! The battle set was amazing and the music was so good! Especially Rubyâs quirky circus-y theme. Loved that! Oh and the overlay of all the magical items was very helpful. (Side note: Itâs all on the wiki if you wanna see it--Iâd link it but tumblr hates when I do that. EDIT: @cloudmancy actually wrote them all up here too so hereâs the link).Â
There was no way Brennan could have known that Ruby was going to drop immediately when he initially planned the session but using that as kind of a vision quest moment to unlock her magic which she starts fully using after that point for the first time was a very clutch story choice for them.
Murph and Emily sitting next to each other this season is a *gift*.
I cannot imagine having the gall to play a level 1 magic rogue in a world where magic is illegal, people who can hit for more than my hit point total 100% want me dead, and rezzes donât exist. What a choice.Â
If one twin dies...and they have to decide...what to do with the other half of that locket...BrennanâŚ
Housekeeping
Brennan is doing an Answer Time here on tumblr! Get your questions in before the 25th!
Not strictly D20 related but Brennan is also DMing a D&D game with some actual play vets and their kids! Check it out here!Â
I canât believe I failed my word count limit two episodes in on a battle episode that I only had 3 pages of notes for. Bold of me to assume I could tamp down on me. But, plus side, Brennan did say I was valid on stream last week, so Iâm gonna say these two things cancel each other out and I am in the clear.Â

d&d asks 7, 14, 15, 21, 25, 34, 38
7)Â How do you go about making a character or NPC?
For character I usually start with basic backstory stuff. Like just stuff I think would be cool for a character. Then I decide race and class based off of that. Then flesh them out the rest of the way. My Tabaxi Cleric that Iâm playing right now was heavily built around his backstory of being a doctor.
For NPC I pretty much just put together someone that fits into the location and give them a couple of fun traits.
14)Â Have you ever had a romance with an NPC or another PC?
I have not! Iâve only recently started playing so havenât gotten big into any of that yet. Though technically one of my players seduced my guard NPC with a nat 20 so weâll see where that goes lol.
15)Â Do you prefer to DM or play?
Playing is definitely easier and more relaxing, but I do enjoy DMing as well. I donât think Iâve been doing either long enough to really choose one or the other though.
21)Â Drop a picture of a mini you painted (if applicable).
Not the greatest picture, but this is the mini I painted for one of my players. Itâs her goblin Walker Texas the Ranger.
25)Â What is your favorite snack for d&d?
My favorite snack is anything with caffeine lol. Not really a snack but I need caffeine during sessions or I get way too tired and distracted. Pizza is also good.
34)Â Favorite accent to do for characters?
Iâm absolutely terrible at accents and honestly try to avoid them, but I gotta say that really bad southern accents are fun.
38)Â Goblins or Kobolds?
Donât make me choose lol. I think I prefer to fight kobolds. But if I had to choose one to play, itâd be a goblin, but only by a little.Â

A/N: no one asked for this, but I canât stop thinking about it so here goes. Also still taking requests for these guys, if anyoneâs interested!
THE RFA PLAYS DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS FOR THE FIRST TIME
SEVEN
We all know heâs the one that suggested it. Call it a team building exercise, if you will. Besides, since theyâre going to be having more parties now in the future, they gotta make sure they stay strong as an organization. What better way than this?
Since no one else is experienced with this game, Seven also takes it upon himself to DM.
Even though oddly enough, heâs never really played it either... at least, not officially.
He found a rulebook when he was younger at the library, and it inspired him, but he knew he couldnât take it home where his mom might find it.
So instead he memorized it, and when Saeran was sick he would make up a story and roleplay with him. No stats, character sheets, or anything. Just two lonely kids getting enraptured in pure imagination for a little while. Itâs one of the fondest memories he has from his childhood.
Iâmma be honest: Sevenâs DM-ing style is basically the same as Griffin McElroyâs in TAZ.
He keeps things pretty well-balanced. Plenty of humor and shenanigans, but the more serious and emotional moments are really moving, and everyoneâs surprised by this.
Zen and Yoosung and even Jaehee and V probably shed some tears over the way the story unfolds.Â
He also does really good voice acting for his characters. Nowhere near on Zenâs level, like you could still kinda tell itâs him doing the voices if you couldnât see his face, but he gets into character really easy (even Zen thinks he should audition to voice act for a game or something... ;) )
Yoosung
Aside from the obvious previous experience he might have, he probably played some one-shot campaigns with some D&D clubs on campus before.Â
The first character he makes is probably a literal recreation of his LOLOL character, since itâs familiar to him, and is a good place to start with since heâs not very experienced. Besides, heâs built like a tank in LOLOL, and if he knows anything about these kinds of games, itâs that balance is key, and they need at least someone who can soak up all the damage of whatever Seven throws at them (is he afraid that heâll make them face bosses way to big for any of them to handle and theyâll all die in the process? GOD YES)
And it turns out that concern was legit. He dies like 5 minutes in.
Scrapping that strategy, he probably will end up making a half-orc , and he ends up really enjoying this character a lot more.
Plays him... surprisingly chivalrous, probably ends up saving a princess at some point in the game.
Seven lets him romance her and... wait... HE HAS A GIRLFRIEND NOW!!!
The game doesnât count, my sweet summer child
Itâs a little awkward that sheâs voiced by Seven, and even though he teases Yoosung about it (both in-game and out), quite often itâs really sweet, actually.
He really, REALLY wishes he could commission someone to do fan art of them, but he has no money T_T
Might ask V if he gets desperate enough... might
Believe it or not, Yoosung will actually ditch playing LOLOL for this.
He likes being able to see all his best friends gathered in one place, laughing and just having a good time. It warms his poor college student heart.Â
ZEN
Heâs not really sure how he was convinced to do this, but somehow heâs very into itÂ
Heâs not very good at the numbers part of the game (and he usually has to ask Yoosung or Jaehee to help him with it), but he really shines in the roleplay department (I mean heâs an actor! If nothing else itâs a really good opportunity to work on his improv skills)Â
Plays an high-elf bard, with a VERY high charisma stat.Â
âNot very original, huh Zen? Trying to make life imitate art?â âShut up, mistah trust-fund kid!â
AND HE PLAYS THEM EXACTLY HOW YOU WOULD EXPECT.
Flirts with EVERY ENEMY. To the point that Seven has to make his character have near-death experiences MANY TIMES to get him to stop.Â
Still, somehow, by the end of the game he has amassed a harem of enemies who worship him for his god-like beauty.Â
VOICE ACTS FOR HIS CHARACTER AND SINGS ACTUAL BARD SONGS HEâS MEMORIZED BEFORE-HAND (rest in peace, Jaehee)
Oh but he doesnât stop there.
He COSPLAYS HIS CHARACTER, AND HIS WHOLE FANBASE GOES INSANEÂ
His bard now has a whole fandom and following irl too. He even made a separate social media account where he shares all the amazing fan art that people have drawn for his character. He even thinks that maybe they should start broadcasting their sessions or do a podcast.Â
JAEHEE
Jaehee is an absolute beast at this game.
Sheâs read over the rulebook at least 20 times and knows it inside and out.Â
Probably gets into arguments with Seven and maybe accidentally metagames once or twice.Â
She should be dm-ing not seven what the hell are they all thinking? She knows the stats better, anywaysÂ
She plays a rowdy dwarven paladin, and no one expected it.
Her logic is: itâs a fantasy-world. She can be whatever she wants, and she wants to smash things, be as rowdy as she likes, and be blunt and tell things like it is.Â
Also sheâs semi-intentionally trying to recreate a gimli and legolas style relationship with Zenâs character, go figure ;) itâs actually really sweet at the end of the day though they make a great fucking team.
Has her own special routine for dice-rolls that she believes will increase her odds of getting a better roll.
They all laugh at her for varying degrees for it but FOR SOME REASON IT WORKS AND SHE HAS CRAZY NAT 20 STREAKS SOMETIMES.
She ends up stealing a lot of Juminâs kills, but sheâs just roleplaying, after all. (Seven gives her bonus xp for good roleplaying too like yeah good for her for using this as an outlet)Â
Frequents D&D forums a lot now. Thinking up new strategies and probably makes like a million new characters based on them that she may never play (but she hopes to, someday)
JUMIN
Heâs heard of it before, and thatâs no surprise with his extensive interest in small specialty businesses and the fact that the RFA has at least two members who have played it before.Â
But alas, he has never played it himself.
He agrees because the level of spectacle that heâs seen around playing this game is astounding, and heâs intrigued. Thinks maybe heâll get a new business idea out of it.
âSo Jumin, what race are you going to play as?â Seven asks, innocently, as though he doesnât know the answer.
â... youâll see.âÂ
Everyone gets suspicious, but he keeps his poker-face as cool as ever.Â
When they go around the table introducing their characters, he puts on his most serious face, puts his hands up in front of his face like paws, and introduces himself as his character: Elizabeth the 4th, Tabaxi Ranger
Zen has to leave the room to get over a sneezing fit, Jaeheeâs glasses shatter, Seven straight up dies laughing on the floor. None of it matters to Jumin. Heâs living the fucking dream.
All that being said, Jumin is definitely tries to take a more methodical approach to the game. He carefully plans out his strategies for the best strategical outcome.Â
AlthoughÂ
He actually ends up really enjoying it, at the end of the day.
You know heâs looking into premium gear for future sessions. Buys all the rulebooks and lorebooks, buys a bunch of really cool-looking handmade dice (that he personally tests himself for balance, to make sure they all roll true). He probably even commissions someone to make custom mini figurines for their characters.Â
V
Like Zen, heâs also not quite sure how he got roped into doing this.
Heâs never played, or ever really even HEARD of this game before, let alone understand how it works, but given an opportunity to hang out with the rest of the RFA and relax, he takes it. It sounds like fun to him anyway.Â
He has to spend a lot of time making his character (this poor boy, he sees everyone else with their faces stuffed in the character stat books and he doesnât wanna ask if he can borrow it âcause they need it to make their characters too and doesnât want to interrupt them)Â
When he finally DOES make a character, however. He goes with a Tiefling Druid. Not only do they look aesthetically pleasing and unique, but also he empathizes with how theyâre treated by society as a whole. Itâs kinda the perfect fit.Â
Heâs super clueless when they first start playing.Â
Seven says âRoll for initiativeâ and he sits there like âwait... what do I do? ^^; â
Jaehee, Jumin and Seven usually help him out and explain things as they go along.
As the game progresses he picks things up bit by bit. Turns out, heâs actually really good at roleplaying.
In the beginning, he plays his character as this cold and distant, not really caring about anyone in the team, but over time that dissolves into unerring loyalty to the rest of the party. Probably created an elaborate backstory involving a long lost love, too.
Everyone gets super attached to Vâs character.
But of course, OF COURSE
When they face the final boss of the arc, someone has to sacrifice themselves to defeat it.
V immediately volunteers, and is dealt a killing blow before any of the rest of them can so much as talk it through.Â
As he dies, he says âMy people only know hatred because they have been so hated. But... Iâve never felt that. Not with all of you. Thank you, for showing me that thereâs hope for all of us!â and his character dies, with a smile on his face.
DAMNIT V NO
EVERYONEâS FUCKING CRYING NOW LOOK WHAT YOU DID
All-in-all though, he had a really great time. 10/10 would play again. Maybe even starts constructing a story-based campaign in his head and wants to try DM-ing next time!
Heâs always snapping super aesthetic photos of the sessions, and probably does a painting of all their characters together to commemorate their first campaign.Â
SAERAN
Saeyoung invited him to play, but he says no.Â
Itâs childish and he has other things he wants to do.
Saeyoung doesnât pressure him, and honestly he thought that would be the last heâd hear of it.Â
However, Sevenâs house is usually where they end up meeting to play (since no one else really has the room for it, and playing at Juminâs house is ruled outright due to level of c-hair)
Heâs a little annoyed, and thus stays in his room for most of the night, figuring he can wait the session out in his room.
But alas, the one thing he didnât factor in was wanting some ice cream at 1 am. Â
After a deep internal debate, he ultimately decides to leave his room to satisfy the craving, and unlocks his door.Â
He wanders into the kitchen, surprisingly unnoticed, silently grabbing a spoon from the drawer and taking the carton of ice-cream out of the freezer, when he overhears something... familiar.
âBOOM! BOOM! Drums sound in the deep. A mighty roar soon follows, as the chamber rumbles with the sound, pieces of the construction tumbling to the floor of the ancient hall in its wake...âÂ
Seven roars, for effect.Â
âOh shit...â Zen says.
âLouder and louder, the sound draws nearer, until the sound stops at the foot of the barricaded door. Large shadows overcome what little faint light shone from beneath the door...â
*pushes up his glasses*Â âRoll for initiativeâ
âWHAT?!â, screams Yoosung, âWE JUST FOUGHT A CAVE TROLL! WE HAVENâT EVEN HAD THE TIME TO RECOVER!â
âShame...â Seven says, âIf only there was one more party member... then you might have a chance...âÂ
Seven then looks over to the doorway, locking eyes with Saeran briefly.
Memories prickle at the back of his head. Memories of those same eyes lighting up as he told the same stories to him. He remembers getting lost in those stories, feeling happy deep down as he figured out what he would do next. He even remembers... smiling?Â
He runs back into his room, and slams the door.Â
And thatâs the last the RFA sees of him...
Or so they think.
Half an hour later, he comes out of his room, pulls out one of the kitchen chairs, sits down and slams a hastily-printed character sheet.Â
âLooks like youâre running into some trouble with that Balrog... tch. Amateurs.â
He made a Kenku Monk, chaotic neutral alignment.
And he completely destroys the boss that Seven had planned for them.Â
DID SOMEONE SAY EDGELORD?
Probably splits from the party a bunch, but Saeyoung planned for that, so thereâs usually a bunch of story-heavy side-quests waiting for him anyway, and they all eventually lead him back to the party somehow.
But truth be told, heâs not that mad about it.
Every opportunity he gets to describe exactly the kind of moves heâs exacting on the enemies they face, he takes. He explains it in creative, gory detail, and it shocks some of the other party members, but Seven seems cool with it.
Thatâs right kiddo, harness all that repressed rage. Let it out.Â
Heâs helping clean the kitchen after everyoneâs gone when Seven asks,
âSo? You going to play with us next session too?â
He pauses washing the snack dishes for a beat, and the corners of his lips start to twitch, just a little.
âY-yeah, I-... I actually had a lot of fun.â
His brother pats him on the back, his hand still on his shoulder when he says âIâm glad! Thatâs what I was hoping to hear.â
â... Wait... you planned this from the beginning, didnât you?â
The sly smirk on Sevenâs face says it all. Bih you know he did
â... you little shit.â

Hey lads so the power was out here for 24 hours. Last night me, Jill @redroguesaint, n Randy @eelektross played a mini D&D session by candlelight since we had fuck all else to do. Hereâs the best of that session:
I dmâed. Our party was:
- Randy: Bibble Dumbbitchitis, Chaotic Good Blue Dragonborn Ranger
- Jillian: Magic Brian, Chaotic Neutral Dark Elf Sorcerer.
- Spider Bryan, a lesbian.
- Baby Cheetos, an albino crocodile.
â
Randy: Iâm gonna put my lowest stat in intelligence, because Iâm not called Dumbbitchitis for nothing.
â
Randy: I slap his bald head.
â
Randy: I roll to slap his bald head.
Randy: I rolled a nat 1.
Me: you high-five him.
â
Jillian: you wouldnât want to be accused of racism in this prestigious fantasy Walmart.
â
Jillian: So like. I sit on Spider Bryan in the saddle, but sheâs so big so if you want to ride her you need to do the splits perfectly and also you need to be strapped in because you canât stop her from climbing on the ceiling.
â
Me: welcome to Fantasy McDonalds, can I take your order.
Jill: can I get uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Burger.
Me: Burger machine broke.
Jill: okay uh. Do you by chance have a lot of flies or like. Rats.
Me: yes the rats ejaculate upon our floors.
Jill: great uh. Can you like. Bag a lot of flies for me?
Me: ... thatâll be 10 gold.
Jill: great great Iâll get that and one medium health potion.
â
Spider Bryan, pressing her leg to Crazy Craigâs face.
Randy: what does he taste like?
Spider Bryan, in infernal: COCAINE.
Jillian: She said cocaine.
Crazy Craig, gasping: HOW DID YOU KNOW MY SWEET AND SEXY LITTLE SECRET?!
â
Randy: I want my trinket to be my wedding Bowser amiibo.
â
Randy: I reach into my pocket, and I take out my wedding Bowser amiibo, and I hold it out to the crocodile.
Me: the crocodile kisses it very gently.
â
Randy: I want to name my crocodile Baby Cheetos.
â
Randy: where are you from?
Jill: Elf city bitch.
Jill: I should clarify. I didnât just call you bitch. The name of the city is âElf City Bitch,â i didnât just call you a bitch.
â
Me: you may not find the perfect crocodile, but the perfect crocodile may find you.
Randy, crying: that is so wise.

The Highlights of Game Day
1) I forgot that Princess' schedule got shifted back an hour so that we can met up at 10pm rather than 11pm, so I get a text at 1030 asking where I'm at.
2) Carol says she has to leave at midnight because she has training in the morning
3) Brady changed his name of his cape from "The Strange Cape" to "The Rape Cape". He said it's because it gives forceful hugs. He also brought a Mario to be his mini.
4) Geoff introduces his class as basic white guy.
5) Princess started off strong as a bard with a joke.
"What the different between a rooster and a sock? one will cock a doodle do and for one any cock will do!"
6) The first natural one of the night was for Brady to play his bag pipes. They ended up bursting.
7) Carol realizes that she can track a person with her bear and successfully does so.
8) Brady also rolled the first natural 20 (21 total) on a perception check and spotted the Vine Blight hanging out in the woods. Carol totaled out at 23 and instead of telling their party what they saw. The monk immediately told the ranger not to say anything to the rest of the party and they started arguing about it until the Blight attacked.
9) Brady kills the Blight by bashing its face in with a mace and proceeds to tea bag it.
10) Geoff crawls into a tent to avoid seeing Brady's victory humiliation and finds the first treasure of the game. Everyone proceeds to try and find more.
11) Geoff is excited and thinks that there is something in the burnt out fire pit. He rolls a natural 20 to check and finds squat. Proceeds to pout
12) Carol gives her axe to Brady to chip a tree down and cross a river.
13) When they come to a fork in the road, they freakin split the party. Not even evenly!! Princess goes by herself and she picks the one that isn't booby trapped. The other party trips a dead fall and Carol and her bear take a log to the face.
14) Final fight happens. With Princesses opening move to be casting an illusion of a naked woman from where she is hiding unbeknownst to her party. The only person that doesn't think it's real is the female bandit. This includes her party. Hilariously at this time, Carol's nose starts bleeding and Princess' solution is to shove a tampon up there to keep playing. Pictures are taken and memes are made about the violence of DnD.
15) Geoff finally gets to participate in combat and his first attack hits and he divine smites the shit out of the bandit leader nearly killing him.
16) Brady unleashes the rape cape for full stranger danger effect. And gets an arrow to the arm for it.
17) Carol arrows someone in the eye and is psyched.
18) ALL OF MY FUCKING BANDITS MISS THEIR ATTACKS THE NEXT ROUND!!!
19) Geoff finish's off the bandit leader by cutting his dick off and performing an intimidating yell. This intimidates all the remaining bandits.
20) Princess wants to finish off the bandits and Nat 1s her dagger throw into her foot bringing her health to 2 points
21) Carol wants to shoot the bandits that are running away at this point and shoots at them. She Nat 1s and shoots Brady in the ass. He is not at 1 point and is stink eyeing her like crazy.
We realize it's now 0130 and everyone is bummed to bail, but they take pictures of the map to remember what was going on for the next play through.
Highlight for me was after everyone left, Princess came up and said that she actually really liked playing and she can't wait to play again.
Overall I think it was super successful and really fun! Lots of jokes were made, beers were drank, and cheese dip was eaten. Now to see if it takes another month and a half to get together and try again!

DnD Antics: the bard and necromancer kill the party... with laughter
so earlier in the week me and ryan (spine) were goofing around and it was decided that we would secretly bring it into the game. mehehehe~
oh and the universe is gonna be destroyed next session.
so to start us off we did some last minute activities which included nazul (ghost boy) making a petition to turn the small gnome town we left into the greatest steam punk city this side of the world. a few nat 20s and a 50 or two later the whole town has left...
ryan (spine): i go to the blacksmith. DM: you find a gnome, crying in his work shop. Spine: what you got for sale? gnome: nothing! that gnome in the town over with her mech shop has ruined me! Spine: meh. you know i was the one who helped her make that shop. gnome: you? YOU? I HATE YOU! *turns invisible. steals Spineâs money* Spine:....i was gonna offer to upgrade your shop but what ever. Zack: *enters* hey how much are these shiri- Gnome: *still invisible. steals Zackâs money.* Zack:....*takes sitrikin*
mean while the witcher is training with master splinter and the turtles. they stole some of his mutigen so there half ling sized and doing a pretty good job at beating his butt. when his training is over all but 2 of the party members wants to train as well!
linsy: youâre not gonna join us? ryan (spine): im still grounded. i canât leave my room.
so the necromancer scrys his water bed (its water. like. hes a lizardman... his room is a mini swamp... he called it his wide screen tv) to watch as the party goes up against the turtles.
meanwhile envoy is praying to the blue flying moose so she knows she still connect to them because eff the ring master and his stupid face gonna stab him in the throat
everything is going well until nazul spring boards off of Zack and sends him into a spike wall killing him.
envoy over the PA system in the do jo: YOUâRE GROUNDED NAZUL! nazul:...how do you know whats happening???
mean while me and Ryan begin our plan. the others have concerns and so far the DM has face palmed at a note he received in order to keep the srprise a surprise.
tim: what are you two doing? me: shhh things ryan (spine): its nothing harmful. tim: now im scared. me: this is just envoy and spine goofing off cause there best friends.
later~ ryan (spine): and rose WILL participate. command familiar! she canât fight it. she is grounded. ryan (frost): like you? group: *snikering* ryan (spine): shut up shafeek youâre grounded too! i get my door back tomorrow.
as the training continues its really neck and neck. suddenly!
coolie: i want to bull rush the wall DM: okay linsy: no no no, rephrase that. you want to through the wall. coolie: yeah. linsy: through the hole leo made. coolie: no :)
elizander bull rushes the wall (much to the enjoyment of the yak) and smacks everyone with debris.Â
the turtles have powers based off of the TMNT board game (DMâs wife is like the biggest turtles fan i have ever met. im not surprised she has a pathfinder esk TMNT game) and at this point miky is hypnotising the party (that isnt dead aka Zack). how ever, Vale is a kitty and she likes shiny things. she wants mikyâs nunckuks... and knocks him out for them which makes raph go into âraph rageâ and he kills her in the first hit but keeps going.
soon im having a hard time keeping my excitement in as frost crystal is the last one standing (everyone is either dead or has fallen into the void). by now ryan (frost) and linsy are beyond curious and coolie has just brushed it off as antics but then me and ryan (spine) stand up-
*the lights go out. a spot like and music starts up. Envoy and Spine are at the finish line* Spine, dressed as jessie: PREPARE FOR TROUBLE! Envoy, dresses as james: AND MAKE IT DOUBLE! Spine: TO PROTECT THE WORLD FROM DEVASTATION! Envoy: TO UNITE ALL PEOPLES WITHIN OUR NATION! spine: TO DENOUNCE THE EVILS OF TRUTH AND LOVE! envoy: TO EXTEND OUR REACH TO THE STARS ABOVE! Spibe: SPINE! envoy: ENVOY! Spine: TEAM ROCKET! BLASTS OFF AT THE SPEED OF LIGHT! envoy: SURRENDER NOW, OR PREPARE TO FIGHT! rose: rose! thats right!
the party is dead. both in real like and in game. the bard, necromancer, and his familiar do perform checks and the DM has thrown his hands up in the air laughing. Envoy and Spine, together, can now do the team rocket motto as a performance spell. all attention (and aggro) will be directed at them. #WorthIt.
and then we make pizza for the turtles :D
after we rest to get spells back, we learn about genis and how apparently they...dont... have... weaknesses....im still gonna stab the ring master in the thro-
so we all get together and go to the earth sanctum thing and being the jerk he is the ring master shows up and is like âthanks for opening the door for me. bye!â
once in side him and the bard have a dance off. the bard wins... but nothing happens. went like this. envoy: DANCE OFF! ringmaster: PANTS OFF DANCE OFF! me: can i counter song that? DM: you canât counter song a counter song. me:....i didnât play a song??? he has counter song???
bear: ursoc want dance! ringmaster: sure thing buddy! *dances with bear* bear: *tries to bear hug and crush the ringmaster* ringmaster: *poofs away* nu-uh-uh! that wasnt nice mister bear. bear: ursoc want dance! ringmaster: iâll send you to a place where you can dance all you want!
ring master makes the bear and eventually the raven disappear and he is currently distracting our ranger with a LITERAL STAR!
ringmaster: *holds up cards* hello witcher. i heard you like to play games~ elizander: *picks a card but touches the ring masterâs hand* coolie: i use devour magic. DM: :) okay. ringmaster: nu-uh-uh~ *drains elizanderâs health.* me: COUNTER SONG! DM: there isnât a song. me: oh but me shouting DANCE OFF is a song??? coolie: *draws a card from the DMâs tarrot cards*..... ryan (spine): please tell me thats not what i think it is. ryan (frost): is it DEATH? coolie:....âthe foolâ.... me: you were a fool for trying to EAT THE RING MASTER! elizander loses all his wisdom and intelligence. has to be songed away from a ledge so he DOESNT DIE me: its the hag encounter all over again...
DM: Spine, you realize you canât connect with yethan. spine: SHIT envoy: *checks to make sure shes connected with the moose* ringmaster: *appears riding the blue flying moose.* envoy: YOU SON OF A HAG! GET OFF MY FRIEND! *nat 20* ringmaster: *spurs the the moose, making it stop* thats a nice mount you have there. envoy: The Blue Flying Moose Is Not A Mount You Can Just Ride Around Like Some Rodeo Pony, They Are My FRIEND!
mean while the cat person is having a philosopurrr moment with the ring master. TBH his plan... is very selfish and doesnt make much sense and the cat is calling him out on it.
we eventually get down into a maze full of beholders. this is where we left off.
im gonna kill him he spurred the moose who the eff does that this lilly livered yellow belly son of a hag thats who gonna smack him with battle cry i swear
unfortunately the ring master currently has a head start now, disabling Zackâs wings, cutting Spine off from his summons, and temperately separating our ranger from her animals. next time we meet the fate of the universe will be decided and honestly i have NO idea how im going to help. Envoy is very upset and will not be negotiating anything any time soon.

2018 Season Predictions
By podcast co-host, Kevin McCaffrey
Thisâll be a long one, so BUCKLE IN!
NL EAST Washington Nationals NY Mets Philadelphia Phillies Atlanta Braves Florida Marlins
The only âinterestingâ thing here is that I could see 2-4 in any order. I think the Phillies are almost overhyped as a possible breakout team, but they have a weak division to beat up on...just like everyone else. I think the Mets land a couple of games above .500 and are in the wild card mix late.
NL CENTRAL Chicago Cubs St. Louis Cardinals* Milwaukee Brewers Pittsburgh Pirates Cincinnati Reds
I think the Cubs are, uh, the best team in the NL on paper? And with extreme bias, I probably put them #2 behind the Astros overall, right in the mix with Nats/Yankees/Indians. The tough part is that I do believe the Cardinals are going to Cardinals it up this season and be 5 wins better than they have any reason to be (Jose Martinez, with good playing time, I really believe in as a kind of Bautista-lite late-ish career breakout). The Brewers I think *should* be a touch better than the Cardinals, but I donât think they *will* be. They really needed one more starter this offseason, and Iâm not sure they have the farm system to deal for one mid-season stud...though their GM David Stearns I think is really good, and as a Cubs fan, bothers me.
NL WEST LA Dodgers Arizona Diamondbacks* Colorado Rockies SF Giants SD Padres
(Dumb guy voice that is identical to my actual voice) âThe Dodgers donât scare me!â Except, they kind of donât. With Turner hurt, that lineup gets un-scary very quickly. Heâll be back, sure, but hand and wrist injuries can be long lingering poison to hitters (as I get deeply sad, thinking about Derrek Lee post-â05). The Diamondbacks are my reluctant pick for the 2nd wild card, as I feel like I could flip a coin between them and the Brewers. The Rockies I believe so little in, with a weak lineup and decent young, but hard-to-count-on pitching, that I had them 4th behind the Giants before everyone on that team died.
AL East NY Yankees Boston Red Sox* Toronto Blue Jays Baltimore Orioles Tampa Bay Rays
Iâve heard a lot of analysts say the Rays still shouldnât be that bad, and that they arenât âtankingâ (Olney & ESPN types, mainly), and I know there are projections that always love the Rays no matter what. But they have a 4-man pitching staff, and they have 3 pitchers. So, last. The Orioles are weird but always better than they should be, I think the Blue Jays have a pretty solid year in what could be the end of the Donaldson era. Of the teams everyone thinks are playoff locks (Nats/Cubs/Dodgers/Yanks/Red Sox/Indians/Astros), I think the Red Sox are the most likely to just whiff it. It feels like theyâre one key injury away from being kind of middling. Take out any one of Betts, Martinez, Sale, even Bogaerts, and they look good, but, eh. The Yankees are, annoyingly, going to be awesome for at least 8 years now.
AL CENTRAL Cleveland Indians Minnesota Twins Chicago White Sox Kansas City Royals Detroit Tigers
Woof, the bottom of this division. The Indians thank you for your fast-pass to the offseason. Because of that weak-ass schedule, my head tells me the Twins are the other wild card, but my heart tells me itâs a team from the city that invented the âfast passâ for their theme park. I love the Twins bargain shopping, going against the grain in an offseason when that meant just paying a little bit good players (Morrison, Lynn). If Cleveland can keep their pitchers healthy at the end of the year -- and the weak schedule could let them pull a 2017 Dodgers and fake DL guys mid-season for rest -- they could really go on a run...kind of like they did during the regular season, last year.
AL WEST Houston Astros Anaheim Angels* Texas Rangers Oakland Aâs Seattle Mariners
Well, the Astros are the best, and they got better. I made money betting on them at the beginning of the playoffs last year, when it seemed everyone was on the Dodgers or the Indians, but I literally put my money on a historically good offense. I like those. They made a great trade that I wish the Cubs made for Verlander, added Cole, and all I can say is thank God they had moments of pure idiocy a few years ago when they waived pre-breakout JD Martinez and passed on Kris Bryant, because if they didnât do those things, weâd just have to hit fast-forward until they stopped winning titles, and Iâm not ready for 2022 yet. The Angels, man, câmon. Theyâre maybe my #1 team to tune into when the Cubs arenât on via MLB.TV (which somehow gets worse every year, from a technical standpoint -- my next story: âThe At Bat App Is Tankingâ), and thank God they finally went all-in to get decent older dudes to surround Trout with in Cozart and Kinsler, and re-signing Upton. Billy Eppler is really smart, and good, and even though getting Shohei Ohtani is largely through luck of location and the inequality of rules between the two leagues, they still got him, and thatâs fun. So, what the hell, Angels for the 2nd wild card because them in the playoffs would be frigginâ cool. And the Mariners rebuild, once they start it, should have them really good by about 2025, when Felix is throwing one of his last opening day starts.
PLAYOFFS
Wild Card Cardinals over Diamondbacks Angels over Red Sox
Division Series Nationals over Dodgers Cubs over Cardinals Astros over Angels Indians over Yankees
League Championship Series Cubs over Nationals Indians over Astros
World Series Cubs over Indians in 7
Jeez, there are a lot of teams tanking, but this October is going to be a gauntlet of incredible teams. Every year is a year when âany team could winâ in the playoffs, because thatâs how the future works, but this year is one where itâs possible that almost any team *should* win.
I think the Cubs and Nationals will battle it out for a very important #1 spot in the NL, which could be rough for the Cubs looking at the Nationals division. Loser plays a rough series against the Dodgers, and goes into the next series with a disadvantage, as the Cubs did last year, heading to LA completely depleted. Fingers crossed the Cubs dispatch with the Cardinals in a very stressful NLDS, and the Cubs once again knock out the Nats, with a great 4-man rotation and Chatwood turning into a high-leverage bullpen weapon, plus whatever reliever Theo gets at the deadline (my prediction is Zach Britton).
In the AL, thereâs part of me that just wants to say Mike Trout wins all the games by himself. But if that doesnât happen, the Astros are the best team, the Yankees could score 8-10 runs just about every game...and yet, Iâm saying this sneaky, historically good rotation in Cleveland puts a run together, choking the life out of every offense on their way to the World Series.
In storytelling, youâd have Cleveland take down the Cubs in a 2016 rematch, now with their rotation more than just Kluber and spare parts. But I think the Cubs rotation is just about the only one with the depth to matchup with Cleveland, and the Cubs might have more of an AL offense than the Indians. The pitching plays to about a draw, and the Cubs bats give them the title in 7...at Wrigley. Cleveland gets the consolation prize of getting to continue the claim of being the longest suffering franchise, which theyâve held for a full two years now.
The Cubs find themselves one title short of being able to claim a semi-official âdynasty,â with three more seasons left in the current window.
Or at least, thatâs what I think will happen.
AWARDS
MVP
NL: 1. Bryce Harper 2. Kris Bryant 3. Anthony Rizzo
I honestly think this could/should be Bryant, and my heart wants Rizzo to get one of these for his future HOF case, but Harper in a walk year, but more importantly in a year he knows might be his last with a great Nats core, has him go on a high-profile tear.
AL: 1. Carlos Correa 2. Mike Trout 3. Giancarlo Stanton
Itâs probably Trout, but letâs get slightly weird. Correa finished in the top 10 in MVP voting last year in less than 110 games, heâs on the best team, and the team played waaaaay better with him active last year. Heâll still likely be the 2nd best player on his team but voters wonât go Altuve again. Stanton hits bombs, you probably heard.
CY YOUNG
NL: 1. Stephen Strasbourg 2. Kyle Hendricks 3. Max Scherzer
Strasâs performance in game 4 of the NLDS was a real turning point in an already great career. With all the weirdness leading up to his maybe not pitching, if he bombed, that narrative would have stuck forever (like Kershaw/playoffs, as stupid as it is). But he dominated a great Cubs lineup, he has three plus-plus-plus pitches, his changeup is actual wizardry that should be outlawed, and he and Bryce go nuts in this last year of the Washington window. Hendricks rules, and people will never realize how much until maybe his 200th win. Scherzerâs maybe my favorite non-Cubs pitcher, and Iâve got him in the top 3 over Kershaw just because of Claytonâs back.
AL: 1. Carlos Carrasco 2. Corey Kluber 3. Chris Sale
ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
NL: 1. Scott Kingery 2. Ronald Acuna 3. Nick Senzel
Acuna seems like heâs gonna be a star of stars, but this could be a year where Kingery simply gets more counting stats, as heâs not having his service time manipulated (well, with the contract he signed, you could argue he still *is* being manipulated, but whatever). Acuna might be the best rookie since Bryant. Senzelâs a reach, just anticipating an injury and him coming up, playing out of position at SS, and hitting a bunch of homers in that mini-park.
AL: 1. Shohei Ohtani 2. Michael Kopech 3. Willie Calhoun
I believe in Ohtani! I think heâll hit 12-15 homers, and be a solid #3 starter this year. Kopech could be Verlander. Calhoun is a position-less fire hydrant who might hit 25 homers in part of a year.
