Crowley owes a HUGE debt to Le Petit Chat Cafe, a French Maid Cafe run by Miette Antoinette (Twst Marie). So what is Crowley’s solution to pay it off? Simple: make his students work there! So the boys have to take shifts and work at the Cafe, something the majority of them are not happy about. And by the way, Crowley’s debt is so huge that it takes the boys 2-3 months to pay it off.

Musketeer Opera (based on Mickey, Donald, Goofy: The Three Musketeers)

The boys go on a Trip to a French city with Minerva Manon (Twst Minnie Mouse), a Professor from Académie Princesse Radieuse. On the final night of the trip, everyone will go to the Opera House to watch a show that recreates what happens in Mickey, Donald, Goofy: The Three Musketeers. But things go awry when a group of kidnappers kidnap half of the boys and MC, holding them for ransom to lure Professor Manon. To save the students, Manon, Grim, and the non kidnapped students come together to rescue their friends.

Magical Musket - Crooked Crown

For an archetype that's been out for eight entire years now, it sure feels very obscure for some reason. I only know about it from one of you guys mentioning it a while back, and even then, I've never once seen one of these cards organically. Which is sad, because I think they're interesting, especially when paired with the context that one of the inspirations for them is the German opera Der Freischütz, with this card being an excellent example of that. Magical Musket Mastermind Zakiel (background) and Magical Musketeer Max (foreground) are directly inspired by the characters Samiel and Max from the aforementioned opera. But more than that, this appears to be a rendition of one of the last scenes of the opera, where the final magic bullet is shot. Zakiel would have full control over the trajectory of this bullet (his intention indicated by his finger gun to the head), which has a tragic outcome for Max (shown by his superb expression and posture). The subtle detail of the white rose petals blowing across is what undeniably indicates when this scene takes place, even though you don't get to see what Max is shooting. Those diagonal blue speedlines in the background create a very convincing foil card illusion that it's kind of scary. This card was only ever released as a common, but I have to imagine that it would look amazing with an actual foil effect. I also must say, the glowing x and circle (and faint electricity bolts) really sell the "magic bullet" angle. Well, that and the fact that you can't see any part of Max's right arm (barely any of his right hand either), which I feel enhance the idea that he has no control over it. I'm genuinely surprised that this card (and archetype in general) doesn't have any edits made to it for the TCG version. Changing hand positions is not unusual for them, and I feel like a "finger gun to the head" pose would be an obvious edit, but I guess not! Same goes for the pistol here, and any other guns used in these cards, really. Maybe they look just demonic enough that they didn't feel a change was necessary? Idk! Just feels a little weird to me when they'll literally edit the smallest things ever.

About the ones kidnapped and the rescuers

So in the Musketeer Opera, at some point half of the cast gets kidnapped by a crime group. The crime group wants something from Professor Manon (Twisted Minnie Mouse), and are keeping the boys ransom until she gives them what they want (figuring out what they want for her).

Jonathan Frid - (Dark Shadows) - the man who brought the first sympathetic vampire in pop culture to life! he was so hot that they sent him on a ten-city tour. he was so hot that teen magazines auctioned off dates with him. he was so hot that allegedly women would mail him love letters and/or nude pictures of themselves! he gave what should have been a quickly-killed-off soap opera villain/dracula knockoff a sense of gravitas, intrigue, and humanity that ultimately made him the star of the show. watching him act is always a treat. I've also met several people who knew him, and overall he just seems like a great guy. there's a documentary about him free on tubi, i recommend checking it out! (fun fact, he was also gay. who on tumblr doesn't love gay vampires).

I first heard Eric Farmer and Eli Kurtz on their great Jianghu Hustle podcast, analyzing drama and combat in a variety of martial arts films. For Hearts of Wulin I asked them to write the chapter on describing fights and combats. Now they have built on what their experience with martial arts films and stage combat to create a new game, Sword Opera. It is now on Kickstarter.

Here's the pitch:

Sword Opera is a new tabletop RPG of melodrama and violence for 2-6 players over 2-6 hours. You play as high-powered paragons balancing their own ambitions and their loyalty to a Circle of allies who seek to dominate a wondrous underworld that you build as you play. Paragons make big, bold decisions and deal with whatever triumphs, setbacks, and crises follow in their wake.

Gameplay is inspired by Blades in the Dark, with d6 dice pools and a heavy focus on the relationships between individual characters and the factions they belong to. A paragon's pursuit of their goals and principles both drives the narrative forward and fuels their character advancement. We play to find out if our Circle can thrive in a world full of danger: rival Circles, determined nemeses, forbidden romances, fatal flaws, imminent peril, and the tension between desire and duty.

It's The Three Musketeers meets Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. It's John Wick meets Fast and Furious. It's swords... meet opera!

spider-men — steve’s idea. in a modern au setting i think maybe they’d do this the year after spiderverse came out. jonathan would dress up as tobey’s spider-man, steve would dress up as peter b. parker (with the sweatpants), and nancy would dress up as spider-gwen with her pointe shoes. their halloween instagram pic would be them recreating the pointing spider-man meme

three little pigs — an alternative costume after jonathan veto’ed the three blind mice

wizard of oz — they group up with robin, vickie, and argyle for this one. nancy is the scarecrow, steve is the cowardly lion, jonathan is the tin man, vickie is glinda, robin is the wicked witch of the west, and argyle is of course dorothy

christine, the phantom, and raoul from the phantom of the opera — it came out in 1986!!! nancy’s idea because she loves christine’s costumes. the phantom could go either steve or jonathan but is it bad if i say steve as the phantom would be hot…

s’mores — worn the year after rock paper scissors. originally they were going to dress as luke, leia, and han, but jonathan and steve both refused to be luke if nancy was being leia so the idea was scrapped. nancy is the marshmallow, jonathan is the graham cracker, and steve is the chocolate. the costume is cute but they all feel silly and nancy makes the executive decision that they’re never dressing up as a food related costume again

Fascinated by your Raoul, is there a reason he's Hatian?

there are a few reasons I went with Haiti specifically. Haiti was colonized by France back in the 17th and 18th centuries when it was called Saint-Domingue and there is a fairly significant Haitian population in France to this day as a result of that. It's also a bit of a subtle nod to Alexander Dumas, the author of "The Three Musketeers" who was also French-Haitian which I head canon to be a favorite book for my version of Raoul. As a character detail I like the idea that he would play at being D'Artagnan when he was a child and pester his older siblings into being the other musketeers with him. But then when the events of the Phantom of the Opera unfold our boy finds the hero's role to be a very grim and frightening and childhood stories can only take him so far when he needs real courage.

Cloud Retainer gripped her hairpin as she felt it suddenly pulse, the gem glowing faintly as a tremor of power rippled through her. Each stone pulled from the hide of Rex Lapis was unique and gave off a distinct tactile melody when resonating with another gem. Even from half a city away, she felt the gem in Unbound Flame’s ring ripple through the air, pinging off Xiao’s amulet before bouncing off hers. 

What is she doing here? Cloud Retainer thought. Curiously, she flicked the gem, sending another pulse in response. Cloud Retainer had promised Focalors that only she and the Conqueror of Demons were in the city. Lying to an Archon rarely ended well for anyone, especially when a notorious reaper of divinity showed up unannounced. 

She was about to return her attention to the swirling ball of interlocking gears and energy in the middle of the square when a woman in a blue garde uniform nervously approached. “Uh, excuse me…you are Madam Cloud Retainer, correct?” 

“You are correct…may one be of assistance?” Cloud Retainer asked, her eyes drifting to a small group of officers that lingered a few paces behind the woman. 

“Lady Furina would like you to meet with herself and the Iudex at the Opera at once,” the officer said, her hand resting on the butt of her pistol. 

“One sees…and does your Lady send armed officers to deliver all of her messages?” Cloud Retainer asked, a chill of unease washing over her as she noticed another line of gardes on the balcony above the plaza, muskets cradled under their arms and all staring down at Cloud Retainer. 

“Lady Furina will explain everything once we are at the Opera…b-but the Archon insists that you accompany me at once,” the officer said, growing more anxious the longer the conversation dragged on. 

“Insists, does she?” Cloud Retainer mused, watching one of the musketeers flinch as she reached up to adjust the pins securing her hairpiece. “Well…in that case, one would be happy to accompany you.” 

Cloud Retainer flicked her gem twice, paused, and then flicked it a third time before following the officer’s lead. A strong, steady pulse flickered through her hairpin, a sensation that Cloud Retainer knew almost as well as her own heartbeat. There were a handful of people that Cloud Retainer had known for millennia; people whose form she could identify in darkness and sense across great distances. She knew Rex Lapis was there before she turned to look at him, his tall frame sticking out like a mountain in the crowds of partygoers that surrounded him.

As the gardes moved to box her in, she saw his jaw tighten. Having the affection of a god was a heavy responsibility; if she so much as cried out he would drop a mountain on the entire Court of Fontaine or split the foundations of the earth. Cloud Retainer had seen the lengths to which he would go to in order to protect those he cared about, and incensed as she was, she didn’t want to spill any unnecessary blood. 

Her god looked to her, and Cloud Retainer shook her head. Hard as his jaw was and sharp as his eyes were, he did nothing as the small pack of gardes passed him and led Cloud Retainer towards the Opera.
