So, I made a silly little post a while ago about how cute it was that Aziraphale suddenly wanted to take the Bentley after waiting 90 years to drive here. But since I wrote it, I watched the episode again, and suddenly a few things started to fall into place.
Aziraphale being so desperate to take the Bentley always struck me as kind of strange. Like, he's spent 90 years of Crowley driving around and has never asked to drive before. Why right now? Crowley seems as surprised by the request... he's not taking the train? He loves trains!
Tumblr media
And then... it hit me. He's going to Edinburgh.
The last time he went to Edinburgh, his worst nightmare came true. Crowley got pulled down to Hell to face punishment for his acts of kindness.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And now, Aziraphale is going back there. The circumstances are completely different, of course, but I'm certain that he remembers vividly losing Crowley. He would want to make sure that Crowley is safe and out of Hell's reach while he's gone.
But with him out of London, how can he make sure that his demon is safe? The Bentley is now not only Crowley's car, but also where he's living now that he got kicked out of his apartment, so most of his time is spent there. Aziraphale is probably aware of this, but he also knows that the demons can get to Crowley in the car. Beelzebub entered the Bentley without permission, as did Hastur in season 1.
But the bookshop is safe. Only Aziraphale can give permission to enter the shop (Crowley seems to have permanent permission because he can now come at will). So, he takes the Bentley, and asks Crowley to watch over Jimbriel in the bookshop, in the one place that he will be completely safe.
Tumblr media
Now all Crowley has to deal with is an amnesiac archangel! What could possibly go wrong?

[Cute Omens #4]
[Also called: Crowley gets j-e-a-l-o-u-ssss]
Right before Aziraphale leaves for Edimburg, ready to get inside the Bentley
Maggie: Oh, Mister Fell, wait! *runs towards him*
Aziraphale: Yes, Maggie? Hello?
Maggie: I just wanted to tell you again how grateful I am for... You know... *awkward shoulder balancing and smile* Not collecting the rent.
Aziraphale: *soft smile of an Angel* My pleasure, Maggie! No need to thank me everyday 😊
Maggie: You... You don't get it, do you?
Aziraphale: I... I'm not sure, now?
Maggie: Nobody does that anymore... People like you, I mean. They do no exist anymore. People are more like... your... *unsure but tries* boyfriend.
Aziraphale: Crowley? Oh, no, Maggie, you've got the wrong idea, Crowley is a very nice... *very long pause* friend... of mine? *shy smile*
Maggie: F-friend of yours? Oh, oh my, I am so sorry, I've... got the wrong idea, um... It's just that... I see him with you so often, and you are- and I just figured- Nevermind.
Aziraphale: *his smile starts to display some hints of regret without him realizing*
Maggie: Listen, Mister Fell, it is most probably not my place, but... In case you wanted to... You know, live something less... "friendly", I might know someone who might be... interested?
Aziraphale: *sudden flashes of Maggie's grandmother hitting on him* O-Oh? You do?
Maggie: You... Remember Mister Brown?
Aziraphale: Oh, yes, I saw him yesterday, he asked me to organize the next Monthly Meeting!
Maggie: Didn't he ask... Anything else?
Aziraphale: Not anything of substance I can remember of. Are you... implying he would have wanted to... hum... ask something else to me? *is never comfortable about these things*
Maggie: I think he likes you very much. And... I am sorry to say, again, certainly not my place, but... he might be a... better fit than your... friend.
Aziraphale: *embarrassed laugh* Maggie, truly, you've got the wrong idea about Crowley! He's the nicest person I've ever met *in over 6000 years which is saying something* and the best...*always marks a pause there for some reason* friend I could ever wish for!
Maggie: I understand, really, it's just that you seem... lonely, sometimes?
Aziraphale: Do I?
Maggie: Trust me, I know the feeling!
Aziraphale: *sympathetic smile* Nothing from... Nina?
Maggie: I'd rather not talk about it, it's... painful. Anyway, um... If you wanted to... Talk some more with Mister Brown, I'm pretty sure he would be very pleased!
Aziraphale: Well, I-
Maggie: *runs without warning* Oh, I-I really have to go, have a good trip, Mister Fell!
Aziraphale: *awkward wave**gets in the car* Oh, hello, there. I'm sure we're gonna get along just perfectly! *taps the steering wheel amicably*
Bentley: *activates a random song the second Aziraphale is seated and ready to go*
Oh, how wrong can you be?
Oh, to fall in love was my very first mistake,
How was I to know,
I was far too much in love to see oh
Jealousy,
Look at me now...
The next morning, the Bookshop's bell rings
Mr Brown: Mister Fell? Hello?
Jim: Hello, I'm Jim, Mister Fell's assistant! How can I help you not buying a book?
Mr Brown: Actually, I was hoping I could see Mister Fell himself, if that is...
Crowley: *arrives in style* Mister Fell is not here, who's ask- *stops and looks at him from afar* Oh. You, again? *is unsure why this last word came out of his mouth but still did*
Mr Brown: *startled* Ah, it is... you... Mister...?
Crowley: *reaches his glasses and puts them on**smirks and walks towards him* Crowley. Hello.
Mr Brown: I-I forgot to ask yesterday, you are...?
Crowley: *raises an eyebrow* I... am...?
Mr Brown: *tries to express himself with just the eyes*
Crowley: *does not get it**at all**makes some waves with his chin to signify he needs more details*
Mr Brown: Maybe... that was a mistake...
Crowley: *clueless Demon* A... mistake? What? The monthly meeting?
Mr Brown: N-no! Nothing to do with the monthly meeting! I...
Crowley: You wanted to see Mister Fell about... Not the meeting? Why?
Mr Brown: I... This is... *sighs* Can we, please, stop beating around the bush?
Crowley: *thinks he somewhat starts to get it but remains unsure* Uhhh... Sure...
Mr Brown: Is Mister Fell in a... relationship at the moment?
Crowley: *hesitates for much longer than he expected* Not... that I know of? And, well, I certainly... would know?
Mr Brown: Wait... You're not his... On-and-off partner?
Crowley: *feels something unexpected growing besides astonishment**is it... anger?* I am most certainly not.
Mr Brown: Oh... OH! G-good! I mean, okay! Are you his... cousin or something?
Crowley: *laughs* Hell no! *is tempted to remove his glasses for some reason*
Mr Brown: Business partner?
Crowley: Sort... of... speak?
Mr Brown: Oh, okay, hum... Can you please not tell Mister Fell about our encounter? I feel like I need to ask him out myself, you see?
Crowley: *finally totally gets it* Sorry. Ask him out? As in... Ask him for a date? *chuckles* Oh, no! Angel doesn't date, ever! *has heard the joke of the next three centuries*
Mr Brown: *gets offended**and cold**well, at least he tries* I-I'm sorry to say but that is not on you to decide, is it?
Crowley: *stops laughing out of nowhere and feels the anger taking the lead**approaches him menacingly* Or maybe, just maybe... it is?
Mr Brown: B-but, you said-
Crowley: *even colder voice* I know what I said, I just don't believe you heard me, so let me clarify... *takes him by the collar*
Mr Brown: *gasps*
Crowley: Mister Fell... doesn't... date. *ends up with a creepy smile*
Mr Brown: *muster some courage**looks at Crowley's hands on his vest**looks back at Crowley's glasses* What if he wants to?
Crowley: *gritted teeth* I assure you: he doesn't.
Mr Brown: How would you know that?!
Crowley: I just do.
Jim: *is back or maybe has never left, nobody knows* Uhhhh... Do you need... assistance in anything?
Crowley: *releases Mr Brown with the heaviest, most threatening smirk**turns at Jim* Can you show Mister Brown the exit? We're done here.
Mr Brown: But I...
Crowley: *turns back at him**accidently nose-on-nose* Ou-T.
Mr Brown: *recoils**frowns his brows**but remains intimidated* I guess you have some unfinished business to attend to, Mister Crowley.
Crowley: *looks at his nails* Yeahhh, I most certainly do. Taking care of Mister Fell's things takes such a long time indeed!
Mr Brown: *to Jim* I know the exit, thank you. Good... *to both* Have a... good day.
Crowley: *indifferent* Oh, I will. Taking care of...
Mr Brown: Mister Fell's things. Yes, I caught that.
Jim: Have a good day! *waves enthusiastically*
[The door closes]
Mr Brown: God, these two really need to talk!

Here I am again, taking issue with the idea that Crowley took a 79-year-long nap right after the 1862 holy water fight because he was angry or whatever... but did he? Does TV canon itself support this? (psst, no it doesn't) TV canon and book canon mostly coexist in peace and of course the book informs and fills in the gaps that the show may have. But the 19th century is a big conflict because in the book, Crowley slept it away (except for waking up in 1832 to use the loo) but in the show he was very well awake in 1862 and had the big holy water fight with Aziraphale. Enters the "nap after the holy water fight" as an attempt to reconcile the conflict. But it ends up making it worse as it makes TV canon conflict with itself! Evidence 1: Crowley tells us that he got the Bentley from new. Mary is a 1934 Derby Coupe model, so in the show Crowley may have bought her in 1934. In the book the Bentley was a 1926 model so we can pretend Mary was a 1926 model for the show, sure, whatever. The point is that Crowley was awake in the 1920's-1930's.
Tumblr media
Evidence 2: The nazis at the church. When Crowley shows up, not only Crowley knows they are blackmailing and murdering people all over London (which ok, let's say it was lucky guess), but Mr. Glozier recognizes him. Therefore Crowley couldn't have "just woken up", he must have been doing something that made his face or his voice identifiable (certainly not his saunter here ;) ).
Tumblr media
Evidence 3: Also at the church. Greta is completely star-struck. It is obvious she hasn't met Crowley before but she has heard of him. He is clearly famous; who knows what he has been doing to warrant this reputation, but whatever it is he has it.
Tumblr media
Conclusion: Crowley was awake in the early 20th century and busy doing Crowley things, not sleeping.

Good Omens S2 Spoilers below the break AND IN THE TAGS BECAUSE I'M AN IDIOT
Okay I'm ready to share a few thoughts.
Season 3 is going to be immensely exciting in terms of character growth, maybe especially for Aziraphale but I'm certain that Crowley will also have some surprises in store.
S2 begins with a scene that really changed the way that I saw the back-and-forth between the two. In S1 it was established that they both love Earth and the universe and would prefer them to continue existing. Because they enjoy life here. Now we know that it was not god, but Crowley, who started the existence of the universe.
It seems to me that god was like "alright, you can do that - after all it will give me a massive ego boost. But I demand that you tear it all down and put your toys away before dinnertime." Crowley was heartbroken when Azi told him the news that everything would have to end after 6000 years. Which is nothing for celestial, eternal beings. This is an important reason for why Crowley started critically questioning god, which led to his fall.
He, however, made the best out of it. He wasn't about to just follow a new set of rules as arbitrated by hell. He loves the universe that he created, and he identifies as a part of it. And we know the way in which he likes to spend his existence in the universe.
There are two things that Crowley holds very dear to his heart: The universe, and the one soul he can share it with - Aziraphale.
I believr that this makes for two core wishes that Crowley pursues: The continued existence of life, earth and the cosmos, and the ability to share this all, in love, with Aziraphale.
Aziraphale loves the universe. Just look at his facial expression when Crowley speaks light into existence. It was a love at first sight moment. Aziraphale deeply adores Crowley's power to create beautiful things, and thus he has always enjoyed spending his existence amidst Crowley's creation, at Crowley's side.
But we must not forget that Aziraphale has never mustered the strength to truly question heaven. He's had more than a handful of experiences where he had to admit that heaven was orchestrating cruel, destructive things. But he is, at least to me, somewhat symbolic of an indoctrinated, blind follower. When heaven commits atrocities, he is bound to believe that there has to be a higher meaning to them, ultimately leading to a higher good. Admitting that heaven can be truly evil at all would shatter his whole understanding of existence. And he keeps on evading it. But it NEEDS to happen.
S1 and S2 both make it very clear that god is holding fast to her plans of Armageddon and the destruction of Earth. But Aziraphale, at the end of S2E6, has the bliss of ignorance. Crowley knows what heaven tried to do to Gabriel when he opposed Armageddon 2.0. Aziraphale is clueless. Therefore he holds fast to his idealism, believing that by taking Gabriel's place in heaven, he would truly be able to change things.
In my understanding, Aziraphale believes that he can change heaven in a way that would allow Earth and the cosmos to continue existing. But he wants to have his cake and also eat it - He wants Crowley by his side in this scenario, back as an angel.
Only Crowley is truly aware about the magnitude in which heaven still wants to bring forth Armageddon and the destruction of his beloved creation. He knows that heaven is toxic and manipulating of Azi, and that there is nothing Aziraphale can do to stop them. On top of that, Crowley will be rendered entirely unable of protecting Aziraphale when he returns to heaven.
I think that Crowley is bitter about Azi's ignorance. That after all the time and the wonders they have not only witnessed but also brought forth, Azi is still unable to leave heaven and its toxicity behind. And I think that that's the reason why he doesn't just break the news to Azi about the recordings that he saw in heaven. Aziraphale just witnessed the whole shebang with Gabriel and Beelzebub, yet he doesn't ask any questions. It's frustrating. It is right in front of his nose, and always has been, that heaven is NOT "the ineffable side of good, truth and light", that Azi so desperately believes it to be, even needs it to be.
Azi and Crowley are so powerful together that they form a bastion against the powers of heaven and hell. They give Earth a leverage against the celestial powers, that otherwise wouldn't be there. Azi defecting back to heaven breaks the bastion.
That significantly sets Crowley back. After all, even if he managed to build a life for himself (for the both of them) on earth, he had always been scraping by, only narrowly evading the wrath of hell and his destruction/finite death. Azi was in the same place before, but as long as they were together, they always managed to come out alive and on top.
That edge that they had is lost now. The power that they had through their bond when working together (consider the 27 Lazari when working "half a miracle"), is now broken. Azi is leaving Crowley to fend for himself when he accepts the Metatron's offer, but it's because he had a false sense of security in his new position of power.
You can see the sheer horror in his eyes when the Metatron tells him about the new Armageddon plans. But Azi still follows him. Because he cannot imagine his existence without heaven and he firmly, naïvely believes that he will be able to make it up to Crowley somehow, through his archangel position. Azi is forgetting that the only thing which stopped the first Armageddon to begin with, was that he and Crowley worked together. Now he is trying to do it all alone. And he will fail. Crowley knows that.
But Crowley also knows that Azi is not ready for the truth yet, and that he cannot be reasoned with. Azi needs to reach his conclusions on his own. And this might be the hardest thing Crowley has ever had to do, as he is rendered unable to protect and guide his beloved angel for the first time in history.
As much as he wishes to, Crowley is unable to protect Azi from himself. And in my POV, Crowley is wise enough to know that. But perhaps he also feels that this is the worst betrayal he has ever suffered, his beloved angel teaming up with the force that wants him dead the most.
In my opinion, Azi needs to learn (the hard way now) that heaven is not "broken", but inherently uncaring, selfish, and therefore just as evil as hell. Heaven doesn't care about love, about life, about beauty. Heaven only cares about the will of god. And god is not as ineffable as Aziraphale wants to believe. Heaven cannot be "fixed", but he believes it can. But heaven will never allow an angel and a demon to live happily together because the very definition of "angel" and "demon" is arbitrarily decided by whom god approves of and whom she doesn't. Also, heaven is so horribly bleak and lifeless! Clearly, god is completely unimaginative, and I suspect that she's even jealous of Crowley's creation. Because that one's got brains. That one's got class. That one's got creativity. That one's got love. All things that god lacks. And she must hate that.
Thanks for the heartbreak. This is phenomenal writing and I love it. S2 ended amazingly to me. This is such a good story and so chock full of drama, suspense, surprises and a true cornucopia of feels

I think you would very cool with flame decals (not that you don't already look cool. it'd just also be cool to have flame decals. like mocking the thing that killed you!)
Hmmm mocking the thing that killed me, sort of like owning it...
Mmm maybe! It's an interesting Idea! I would look cool. Maaaybe in the future (after therapy).
But as always I gotta run these things past my drivers first...
