Typography Tuesday

Last month, the Milwaukee Public Library's Arts & Media Department held its first Art Book Club session. Intended as an informal art book appreciation club that meets once a month in the Art, Music, and Recreation room, each session explores a different theme by looking at the wide variety of art materials in the collection. The collection is historical, non-circulating, and vast. I attended and spent an hour and a half mesmerized by the array of luscious materials presented.

There was design, architecture, fashion, and much more. As a type nerd, I was especially drawn to the several late 19th- and early 20th-century type specimen books on the tables. Here, for example, are some pages of chromatic initials by various European and American companies from Schriften Atlas, compiled by Ludwig Petzendorfer and published in Stuttgart by Julius Hoffmann in 1898.

MPL held its second Art Book Club session on the theme of "Animals" last night, but I missed it because I was conducting an evening instruction session. Dang! But I'll be attending future sessions when I can and I'll keep y'all apprised.

Today I am in the war of 2024. I am 20 years old. I was supposed to go to my university and my younger brothers to their schools. Also, when I go home, I find my favorite food prepared by my mother. But unfortunately for us, and for our bad lives, and for being let down by the world and people, no one wants to sympathize. With our children and women, most people want to erase the identity of every Palestinian person. Why don’t you want to know the truth? You know who carried out all the war that we are experiencing. We have a history of audio, images and video, and thousands of people became victims because of the enemy. They took our lands and our sanctities and erased all landmarks. Life in Gaza. They prevent people from entering Al-Aqsa Mosque. They arrest young and old and do not care about anything. In Gaza they kill innocent children and pregnant women and execute them in front of the world. They do not respect international laws or human rights. They deprive the wounded of their medicine and the dead from their graves. The dead decompose. Above the ground, can you imagine the extent of the brutality!! They deprive northern Gaza of food and lie to people in the safe areas and kill them. There are no medicines for the sick and there is no treatment for them even outside Gaza. Healthy food and healthy water are not even available. Polio has spread widely throughout the Gaza Strip, liver disease, the virus, and skin pimples. That burns the skin. All the difficult lives have befallen innocent people. Is there anyone listening? Is there anyone who can answer? I hope that you will negotiate and stand with us and look at us as humanity and do the impossible to stop all crimes. Our hope is still in you 💔���🇸

Copy and pasting the following from a discussion of this video in a discord server I'm in, because I think it's a point worth making:

It's very annoying to see how telephone game'd the Mars Climate Orbiter failure has become.

It didn't crash into Mars, it was simply too low when it went for an aerobrake pass. It definitely didn't leave "a scar that you can see from the other orbiters". Mark is probably either thinking of Beagle 2 or Mars Polar Lander, or maybe one of the more recent unmanned lunar landers (Beresheet, maybe?).

It wasn't a mixup of inches and centimeters, it was a mixup of pound force-seconds and newton-seconds.

Lockheed weren't idiots, and it's frankly insulting to all teams involved to claim so. The actual MCO mishap investigation report -- which Mark clearly either hasn't read or hasn't read thoroughly -- clearly states throughout that while the direct cause of failure was the faulty data in the Angular Momentum Desaturation modeling file (not just incorrect units, but also formatting issues and just plain errors), the root causes were multivalent:

The ops. team were understaffed and running three missions simultaneously.

Team members were inadequately trained.

Inadequate onboard navigation ("total reliant on [the] Earth-based Deep Space Network")

Contingency maneuvers that could have saved the mission, weren't taken because the teams weren't prepared (or able to prepare) for them.

End-to-end testing of the software stack, which should have been performed beforehand, never occurred.

And more! You can read the MCO phase I mishap report here and phase II here, if you're interested in learning what actually happened, instead of just blaming Lockheed for being stupid degenerate Americans with no safety culture.

You might notice with a sense of dramatic irony that the MCO phase I report makes a lot of recommendations for the concurrent MPL program; that mission would similarly fail less than a month after the report's publication for related reasons (not the units mixup part, the other ones).

MCO was not an isolated incident and it's frankly malpractice to ignore that (by omission or otherwise). The 90s were bad for space programs, mostly down to budget pressures. The MCO phase II report goes deep into the problems with NASA "Faster, Better, Cheaper" philosophy at the time.

Let me summarize: MCO was not a failure of software design. It was not a failure of unit conversion, either. It was a failure of project management. While the course (in)corrections were what doomed MCO directly, it was always going to be something. The team running MCO simply could not have succeeded given the conditions they were in. If it was anyone's fault, it was Congress' fault for not funding the deep space program enough.

I wanted to Post about another interesting design I found while combing thru lists of Ghost Bear/Dominion mechs that doesn't seem to get a lot of love. The Arcas.

Originally built by Clan Ghost Bear at the start of the 3060's, the Arcas was intended to mark in a new age for the Clan in the Inner Sphere. As a second line battlemech, the Arcas is a more sculpted and less utilitarian design than a lot of the invasion era omnis befitting it's lack of configurability. And boy am I glad they did that because they decided to make the thing look like a big angry viking in furs and lamellar. A portent of things to come what with Ghost Bear's eventual melding with the culturally similar Rasalhague.

Despite being a second liner, the Arcas uses a supremely expensive clan XL power plant, though it puts this to good use paired with its jump jets to propel it up to a pretty spookily fast 5/8/5 movement profile. Offensively, it packs a pair of Clan-spec ER large lasers for long range engagements, two medium pulse lasers for medium range, and a trio of streak-4 SRM packs for close in work. With 15 double heat sinks it can run and fire its energy weapons while staying neutral, while the Streaks' missile locks mean you'll only seriously spike the heat up close when you're putting a lot of warheads on foreheads. This relatively light armament for a clan heavy (or as I, a primarily IS pilot say, an extremely, enthusiastically acceptable bonanza of high quality dakka) comes as a cost for protection- the Arcas has 13.5 tons of standard armor, making it nearly as durable as the 10 ton-heavier madcat and twice as well armored as the similarly weighted and engined Hellbringer.

All this combined makes for a very good heavy cav mech- a good Arcas pilot can start a beat down at range and continue to ramp up the pressure as she closes headlong at the opponent, safely protected by her speed and armor. It does pay hellishly for this, Clan XLs are worth slightly less than sending a 4k copy of the Bee Movie to every great house capitol by way of HPG network. 14.77 million C-bills makes this thing an almost perfect 10 on the urbanmech price index, and for 2484 BV I could bring a pretty darn solid pair of medium mechs to a fight. But it's also a heavy mech that moves like a medium and wasn't designed by someone whose brain was 93% nasally-imbibed glue, so if I can buy/borrow/steal one I'll take it.

The Arcas comes in 2 non-standard flavors, both have some merit so we'll go thru them quickly

The Arcas 2 is an energy boat sniper build that trades the large lasers and missiles for a pair of ERPPCs and a few extra heat sinks. It can handle the heat off the headchoppers fine and only really needs to start making descisions when it brings those MPLs into play. Effective, but a PPC's mech is generally to find a place to sit and stand there making shots so that massive engine is wasted. Next.

The Arcas 3 goes back to being interesting. It yet again strips the ER larges and two of the missile systems, this time in favor of a heavy large laser, a targeting computer to handle the accuracy problems, and 7 improved jump jets. While the damage on this variant is lower than that of the Standard or Model 2 5/8/7 is an absolutely disgusting movement profile, the heat management allows for jumping alphas where you're worried about building *any* heat as opposed to hitting move/GS penalties, and the improved accuracy on the pulse lasers will make this thing an absolute pain to fight. It's also almost 200 BV cheaper than the Standard, leaving you move room in a list for other bullshit.
