Romance Anime Starter List
I don’t know about you guys, but I’m sick and tired of seeing “Top ___ Best Anime of All Time” lists that are nothing but shounen. So, with "My Happy Marriage" getting a little attention from the anime community, I wanted to put together a list of some romance anime that I consider good “starters” for the genre. Because if I were just now becoming an anime fan, I’d think all there was to offer was shounen action series.
And by “starters” I mean basic stuff that’s not too…out there, and actually involves the characters getting together instead of just harems or using romance as a side plot (sorry Ouran High School Host Club and My Next Life as a Villainess).
So if you’re new to anime and want stuff that’s not just guys beating the shit out of each other (which is also fun, don’t get me wrong), here are some basics.
Taisho Maiden Fairy Tale- When the pessimistic Tamahiko Shima loses all function in his right arm, his family sends him away to live in the mountains with the cheerful, hard working Yuzuki Tachibana…who was purchased by the Shima family to pay off her family’s debts and basically act as a caretaker/future bride for Tamahiko so they’d never have to deal with him again. It’s a more cheerful version of My Happy Marriage (without the supernatural stuff), except in this one, the guy is the one who has massive self-esteem issues and an abusive family. There are still very serious themes, but ultimately it’s not meant to make you cry every episode. I swear it’s so good, but nobody watched it!
Horimiya- A slice of life in which pretty and popular high school queen bee Hori, finds out her quiet, unassuming classmate Miyamura is hiding piercings and tattoos that could get him expelled. The two gradually find out more about each other and get together in the most realistic way I’ve seen depicted in an anime. It’s also fucking hysterical and genuinely emotional.
Recovery of an MMO Junkie- Another slice of life that focuses on two adults who meet in an MMO game without realizing they also know each other in real life. I don’t want to say much more than that. It’s adorable, and the main character is so relatable it hurts.
Love with Yamada-kun at Level 999- Speaking of MMOs, this is a newer series about Akane Kinoshita, a college first year who’s reeling from a bad break up. In an attempt to get back at her ex, she winds up meeting Akito Yamada, a popular gamer who happens to be in her guild in the MMO they both play at an IRL meetup. The two go from acquaintances to something more as they keep running into each other. Even more relatable main characters and just wholesome relationships all around.
Snow White With The Red Hair- A fantasy in which an apothecary named Shirayuki (meaning, you guessed it, “snow white”) runs away from her home in order to escape becoming the concubine of her town’s prince. While fleeing, she is rescued by Zen, the prince of a neighboring country, and she ends up becoming an herbalist to repay him. It's super cute with some genuinely swoon worthy moments and a couple that just works so well together. I have a habit of comparing this to Akatsuki no Yona, even though the two aren’t really that alike. This is more romance driven while Akatsuki no Yona is more of a serious historical fantasy with romance elements (Yona manga is amazing, but the anime barely scratches the surface, so that’s why I didn’t include it).
Sasaki to Miyano- When the shy, easily flustered Miyano meets Sasaki, a cool “delinquent” upperclassmen, the two end up bonding over manga…specifically BL manga. That’s right, Miyano is a fudanshi, but due to his small stature and somewhat feminine appearance, he’s constantly trying to convince others that he’s not interested in having his own love story where he’d be reduced to a stereotypical doe-eyed uke. But as Sasaki and Miyano spend more time together, they realize that what they have is more than friendship, and they have to come to terms with their own perception of gay relationships. This is my favorite romance of all time. It’s a slow burn, but boy is it worth it. Their relationship is so natural and realistic, just like Horimiya. Just two people hanging out and bonding over things the way people do in real life!
Given: The story of some boys in a band with trauma. Enough said. It's great. Go watch it.
Bloom Into You- Yuu Koito is a high school girl who’s been waiting her whole life for her own perfect romance to start…but when she receives a confession, she realizes she doesn’t know how to respond when she’s just not into the guy. And then she gets another confession…this time from the cool student council president Touko Nanami, who basically jumpstarts her lesbian awakening. Very cute story about how we perceive the concept of love vs actually feeling it. Also has a canonically aro/ace side character, so that’s a win for me. Another show like this is Adachi to Shimamura (but I honestly don’t remember much about it. It just didn’t stick with me as much).
Ore Monogatari- Takeo Gouda is a tall, bulky high school first year with a sensitive heart of gold. He wants nothing more than to find his own true love, but most girls are intimidated by his enormous stature, and they end up falling for his conventionally attractive friend instead. That is, until he meets the tiny, adorable Rinko Yamato. He falls in love instantly, but he’s sure she’s interested in his best friend like everyone else, so he vows to help get them together, even though his heart is breaking. Peak himbo behavior. Pure of heart, dumb of ass.
Yuri on Ice- Yes it’s the gay figure skating anime everyone knows. And yes it’s a fucking romance, okay? I will die on this hill. The romance between Viktor and Yuri is just as important as the plot!
Kaguya-sama Love Is War- Two insanely smart high school students both have a crush on the other, but since they’re…you know…high schoolers, neither of them wants to admit it first. So they come up with increasingly convoluted plans to get the other to confess first. This will go down as one of the best of all time. It’s a hilarious yet poignant modern classic.
Fruits Basket- I’ve talked about it before and I’ll talk about it again. A romance “comedy” that slowly morphs into a drama about a girl named Tohru who finds herself living with the mysterious Sohma family after her mother dies. Little does she know, the Sohmas are the victims of a (somewhat silly, but ultimately tragic) curse that she must fight to break. Even though I’m more into it for the family drama, the romance is still top tier and plays an important role in the story. This is my second favorite anime of all time, and it’s a classic for a reason. If anyone hasn’t watched it yet, GO WATCH IT! IT WILL RIP YOU TO SHREDS!
Blue Box- A sports romance about an aspiring badminton player named Taiki Inomata who has a massive crush on the girls basketball team's star player Chinatsu Kano. Through a twist of fate, the two end up living together and having to hide it from the rest of their classmates, all while Taiki tries to work up the courage to ask Chinatsu out. It's so sweet and wholesome, and it's a great blend of sports anime and romance that can appeal to anyone who is more hesitant to get into the romance genre. The animation is also so freaking gorgeous!!!!
365 Days To The Wedding- A workplace romance between the two most awkward people you could possibly imagine! The story takes place at a travel company that is about to open a new branch in Alaska, but because our two main characters are...like I said...very awkward, they come up with a plan to avoid being sent to work at the new branch...by telling their boss they're getting married. Because they wouldn't want to split up a married couple by making one move away, right? As ridiculous as the premise sounds, hilarious shenanigans ensue, but there's also a surprising amount of serious discussions about romance and marriage. The main characters also have major autism coding, so if you're looking for a neurodivergent romance, this is it. (There's also an episode that involves a princess wanting to give up the throne to pursue a life with her girlfriend!)
And now for some honorable mentions that didn't quite fit into the regular list:
Ride Your Wave- A movie about a surfer who falls in love with a firefighter……and I’m not going to say any more than that. Go into it blind. If you like stuff like Your Name, this is a good one to watch.
Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun- A comedy about a high school girl who finds out the upperclassman she has a crush on is actually a shoujo manga artist, and no matter how she tries to confess to him, he just never gets it.
The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague- A slow burn slice of life that focuses on a guy with ice powers who has a crush on his coworker. That’s it. That’s the show. When I say slow, I mean SLOW. It’s perfectly cute and fluffy, but my god does it take forever to get anywhere with these two.
Skip to Loafer- A high strung, small town girl decides to go to high school in Tokyo, where she meets a variety of classmates, including the laid back Sousuke Shima. The unlikely pair become friends, and soon enough, she starts to feel something more than friendship. The only reason I didn’t include it in the main list is because they don’t get together by the end of the first season, but it’s still really cute (also canonically trans character for the win!?)
So that’s my starter list. And no, I didn’t include Toradora, even though it’s a classic. I know it’s blasphemous, but I like it more as a comedy than a romance. It kinda lost me with the ending. But anyway, maybe someone will find something they like. Or maybe you'll just want to roast me and my picks 😅
#yuri on ice#kaguya sama: love is war#fruits basket#ore monogatari#bloom into you#sasaki to miyano#snow white with the red hair#yamada kun to lv999 no koi wo suru#horimiya#recovery of an mmo junkie#taisho maiden fairy tale#skip to loafer#blue box#ao no hako#kekkon suru tte hontou desu ka#365 days to the wedding#unfortunately not much bl or gl since a lot that I've seen is too...out there for this list...#now bl manga on the other hand...#why did i make this lol?#because i finally got to the confession scene in akatsuki no yona of course and now i'm dead#I kinda want to include doukyuusei too but it's just a little bit steamier than what I was going for with this 😅

Korean Manhwa/Webtoon Recommendation List (Romance-Fantasy Genre)
I recently got into the romance-fantasy (rofan) genre of Korean manhwa/webtoons and wanted to make a recommendation list about it. This is a recommendation list but I want to briefly talk about some newly released rofan manhwa that I really liked.
(My recommendation list will be divided into different categories so you'll be able to understand what kind of stories they are...)
So recently, I got into these newly released rofan manhwas:
The Wicked Ladies in Waiting
The Promise Isn't Mine
Turning the Mad Dog into a Genteel Lord
Fallen to Paradise
I Swear We're Just Friends
Please Don’t Reply!
High Society
The Wicked Ladies in Waiting
Yulia, who was born an orphan, was killed in exchange for falling in love with the Young Master of the Marjoram Family and was left on a snowy mountain. But when she opened her eyes, at the same location as any other day, she was rescued by the Commander of the Imperial Army, Carus. She was hit by a curse of being unable to die, and this is now her 8th life. After realizing that she would be stuck in the loop forever if she didn't take down the Marquis, she became a servant (2nd prince's lady-in-waiting) within the Palace to utilize the Royal Family’s power to demolish the Marjoram Family in her 8th life. I really love both the FL and the ML here. At first, the ML was suspicious of her when she revealed the truth to him in her 8th life that she had regressed back to the past 8 times, and each and every time she died in various ways, she encountered the ML and he somehow always tried to save her each and every life (even though he doesn't have the memories of his previous 7 lives like the FL). To make him believe her, she offered him help by predicting some future events that were going to occur later on because she had already seen or known about those events from her previous 7 lives. In this way, the FL saved the ML and his comrades' lives in this 8th life, and because of that the ML believed her regression story and offered to help her lifetime. Their relationship progressed well from suspicious strangers to trustful allies. Although we haven't seen much of them yet, I'm still waiting for some romance and fluff to happen in their relationship. The 2nd prince whom she works for and the 1st lady-in-waiting who is her colleague are also interesting characters and have immediately become the FL's good friends and strong allies just like the ML. The FL is strong, smart, and lovable, and the whole revenge plot is really interesting. You would love to see her succeed in her missions. Highly recommend this manhwa/webtoon.
The Promise Isn't Mine
When her twin sister Leyla, the Holy Maiden, suddenly disappears one day, the ordinary Elena finds herself having to marry Crown Prince Kyle, a man infamous for his ruthlessness, in her stead. After a dreadful marriage ceremony, Kyle demands that a certain promise be fulfilled, to Elena’s confusion. Elena and Kyle are actually childhood sweethearts btw. They've both been in love with each other since their younger days. The ML immediately realized who she was, but she didn't recognize him; although she does vaguely remember him from her past, but doesn't know that the man she married is the same boy from her teenage days. I can't wait for her to realize who he actually is; that he's her childhood sweetheart. Also, it's kinda funny how the ML and FL look like Iske and Ruby from "How To Win Over My Husband". However, this ML is a whole lot different from Iske since the ML is genuinely nice, kind, and caring towards the FL from day one. And not to mention that he's still in love with her and immediately recognizes her after meeting her so many years later again. Highly recommend this series.
Turning the Mad Dog into a Genteel Lord
Diarin, a priestess without any noteworthy family background or connections, always gets the toughest assignments. So when her boss tells her to help Ceres, a war hero, reintegrate into society, she decides to stop being a pushover and get as much as she can out of it, including a juicy promotion. But upon reaching Ceres’ manor, she’s greeted by a growling hound instead of a human. Tasked with the impossible job of turning the mad dog into a proper gentleman, she dedicates herself to caring for him. But his unexpected obsession with her was never part of her plan. This one is my No. 1 personal favorite at the current moment!! You can tell by the pictures how funny and hilarious this series is. I won't tell you guys anything more. Just go and read this one as quick as possible!! STRONGLY recommend this series!!!
Fallen to Paradise
Ange, the daughter of Duke Glaster, believes her life is all planned out as she is set to marry Philip Cardiner, the rightful heir to the throne. However, her plans are disrupted when Philip's brother, William Cardiner, schemes against him and removes him from the line of succession. In order to secure his power, William forces Ange to marry Aiden Fitzroy, an illegitimate child born between the emperor and a commoner. Will Ange learn to love the humble stranger she was forced to marry? Another hilarious yet very cute manhwa!! At first, the FL didn't like the fact that she was getting married off to the illegitimate son of the emperor and that the ML lived in the countryside and was also a farmer. The ML also found her a nuisance in the beginning because of her whining and throwing tantrums, but as time went on and they started to understand each other, they began to fight less and tried to get along. Romance also started to blossom between the two as they went on with their lives in the countryside on the farm by planting crops and vegetables and raising cows and pigs. I love how the FL, who was the Duke's daughter and was once the next crown princess, is now just a military officer/farmer's wife, and yeah sure, in the beginning, she used to complain about everything and anything, but she quickly went through a major character development, and now instead of whining and throwing tantrums, she tries to understand her husband and even willingly participates in the farming works. The ML was cold at first and found her annoying, but eventually he also later tried to understand her and her situation and started warming up to her. Very cute manhwa!! Highly recommend this!!
I Swear We're Just Friends
When Rienne transfers to the elite Alena Academy, she never expects Karcion, the most popular mage in school, to recruit her into his club and she definitely doesn't think he'll fall for her! But the grumpy Karcion soon makes it clear how much he adores her, and she starts finding him too cute to ignore. Still, he's a future duke and she's a commoner, so Rienne knows his feelings won't last. Can Karcion magic his way out of the friendzone? Or will Rienne prove they're just friends after all? A typical high school setting kinda story with enemies to lovers troupe; the only twist is that it's a historical fantasy story, not your typical modern high school romance. The FL is a cool smart girl and I loved her from the start. Meanwhile, at first, the ML is also shown to be this cool smart dude and is very popular in school but later it is revealed that he's actually a big tsundere crybaby and is very expressive when showing emotions which makes the FL want to tease him more and more whenever they interact. Since it's a high school romance in a historical fantasy setting, it has a different spin to it and has made the read very much enjoyable which was unexpected. Definitely check this one out! Highly recommend this series.
Please Don't Reply!
What’s worse than someone who leaves you on read? How about someone who doesn’t know when to end the conversation? Mira Hexen is cursed to always be the last one to reply for a whole year or she will be turned to stone. But that’s a bit difficult when you’re the chief of a company that produces a massively successful messaging device. Mira’s latest VIP client is Euryx Deyra, an extremely friendly duke who feels the need to respond to every little thing she says. If only she could just tell him to shut up already...! By reading the synopsis you can already tell where this story is going. Read only 4 chapters and found it really cute, funny, and wholesome. Definitely worth checking out. Highly recommend this as well!!
High Society
While scheming to get out of an arranged marriage, Cesare runs into Adele, a shoeshine girl from the slums. The two make a 3-month deal to help Cesare elude marriage. However, Adele is so different from the women he's met before that he can't help but be drawn to her. Okay, so this series might not be everyone's cup of tea since the ML is a super red flag, and the FL is kinda like a doormat. Sure she fights back from time to time, but since she's under a contract with the ML and he's the Duke of a powerful ducal family, she always can't say anything she wants to him. At first, the ML didn't care that much about her and didn't see her as a woman with whom he could have a potential romantic relationship but as time went on, he fell more for her beauty and personality, but there was a problem - the ML had already introduced the FL to the high society that she was his blood-related little sister. Now how could he have a romantic relationship with his so-called "blood-related little sister"? The thing is, the ML was trying to get out of this arranged marriage alliance that was set with this crazy woman from another powerful ducal family. But this marriage alliance was very important for political reasons and also to maintain a good relationship between those two families in the empire. But the ML didn't want to marry that crazy woman, so he found the FL (who was willing to help him out btw) on the streets one day, took her in, and used her as a shield to stay away from that marriage. How so? By offering the FL as the bride of that crazy woman's little brother. The FL would get married off to that crazy woman's brother while the ML won't have to marry that crazy woman anymore, and therefore with that, the alliance would still be made between the families without him getting married, of course. But what is he gonna do about this situation now that he's falling for the FL? Is he gonna let the FL go and let her get married to that crazy woman's little brother? Or is he gonna seduce her and make her his and only his?? The ML is super toxic and a huge red flag, but he's so fucking beautiful that I just can't, y'all!!! Like, look at his dimples OMG!!! Although the ML is super toxic and a major scumbag at times, the story is still super engaging not gonna lie. Highly recommend this to check it out!!
Also, here's the link to the photo gallery of Cesare Bonaparte, a toxic yet sexy and beautiful male lead - Link

In the world of A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR) by Sarah J. Maas, we encounter the tale of Feyre Archeron—her struggles, her growth, and her eventual role in the politics and power struggles of the Night Court. But beneath the fantasy, romance, and magic, there are unsettling parallels between Feyre’s story and the themes George Orwell laid out in 1984. While Maas likely didn’t intend to mirror Orwell’s dystopian warnings, the similarities are impossible to ignore. Feyre is not just the savior of the Night Court; she is also a victim of manipulation, control, and brainwashing, much like Orwell’s protagonist Winston Smith.
Introduction: The Hidden Parallels
At first glance, ACOTAR and 1984 seem worlds apart. Orwell’s novel presents a dystopian society where the government, under Big Brother, uses fear, surveillance, and propaganda to control every aspect of life. ACOTAR, on the other hand, is a fantasy series set in a world of faeries, with romantic subplots and the high stakes of political intrigue. However, beneath the glittering surface of Maas’ fictional world lies a deeply disturbing undercurrent of control, manipulation, and forced loyalty—one that eerily mirrors the mechanics of Orwell’s totalitarian regime.
Feyre, though not living under a literal dictatorship, undergoes a process of reeducation and mental conditioning that is shockingly similar to what Orwell describes. She begins as a free-thinking individual with her own set of values and beliefs, but as the series progresses, her autonomy and agency are systematically stripped away, leaving her loyal to the Night Court and its ruling elite, much like Winston’s eventual submission to Big Brother.
The Argument: Feyre’s Journey as Brainwashing
From the beginning, Feyre is established as someone who fights for survival, her family, and her independence. In the first book, we see her resisting the magical and political forces that seek to control her, much like Winston resists the Party in 1984. However, over the course of the series, particularly after her move to the Night Court, Feyre’s resistance crumbles. She is slowly but surely brainwashed into accepting a new reality—one that benefits those in power, mainly Rhysand and his inner circle.
In 1984, Winston is tortured and reprogrammed by O’Brien, a figure who presents himself as an ally but ultimately serves the oppressive regime. Rhysand, in many ways, mirrors O’Brien’s role. He positions himself as Feyre’s savior, rescuing her from the clutches of Tamlin (who, despite his flaws, initially fought to protect Feyre in his own way). But Rhysand’s method of “saving” Feyre is not as benevolent as it seems. He isolates her from her past, her family, and her previous values. Under his influence, Feyre gradually comes to adopt his worldview, just as Winston adopts the Party’s beliefs.
In 1984, the Party controls reality by controlling thought. It rewrites history, eliminates dissent, and conditions its citizens to accept whatever truth is most convenient for maintaining power. In ACOTAR, Rhysand and the Night Court engage in similar tactics. Velaris is portrayed as a perfect utopia—an untouched, idyllic city that must be protected at all costs. Feyre is repeatedly told that Velaris is the pinnacle of what society should be, and anyone who disagrees (like those from the Hewn City or other courts) is deemed an enemy. The propaganda is subtle but insidious, convincing Feyre that the Night Court’s way of life is not only superior but the only way.
Rhysand as the Manipulative Leader
Rhysand’s control over Feyre mirrors Big Brother’s control over Winston. He plays the part of the benevolent ruler, always positioning himself as the one who “saved” Feyre, first from Under the Mountain and then from Tamlin. However, his methods of manipulation are far more sophisticated than mere physical coercion. Rhysand uses emotional manipulation, guilt, and a savior complex to entrap Feyre in his web of loyalty. He repeatedly tells her that he is giving her “freedom,” all while subtly guiding her into a role that benefits him and his court.
This is strikingly similar to how the Party in 1984 claims to protect its citizens by controlling them. The Party tells people that true freedom lies in submitting to Big Brother, that by giving up their autonomy, they are protecting themselves from harm. Similarly, Rhysand convinces Feyre that she is free when, in reality, she is being shaped into the perfect tool for his political agenda. Feyre’s transformation into High Lady of the Night Court is not an act of liberation; it’s a calculated move to ensure her absolute loyalty to Rhysand and his cause.
Rhysand rewrites Feyre’s personal history just as the Party rewrites history in 1984. He convinces her that her time with Tamlin was solely abusive and that her loyalty to him was misguided, even though Feyre had once loved and trusted Tamlin. This rewriting of her past serves to break any lingering attachment she might have had to her former life, leaving her entirely dependent on Rhysand. Much like how Winston is made to betray Julia, Feyre’s love and loyalty to Tamlin are erased, replaced with complete devotion to the Night Court.
Surveillance and Control
Another striking parallel between ACOTAR and 1984 is the theme of surveillance. In Orwell’s world, citizens are constantly watched by the Party, with no privacy or space to form independent thoughts. In ACOTAR, Rhysand similarly invades Feyre’s mind through his mental powers. He has the ability to speak to her in her thoughts, to read her emotions, and to manipulate her dreams. This constant intrusion into Feyre’s mental and emotional space mirrors the Party’s surveillance tactics in 1984. Feyre cannot truly escape Rhysand’s influence because he is always present in her mind, shaping her thoughts and guiding her actions.
This level of control is subtle but effective. Feyre begins to doubt her own thoughts and feelings, questioning whether her memories of Tamlin were ever real, whether her previous life had any meaning. Rhysand becomes her only source of truth, just as Big Brother becomes the only source of truth in 1984. The result is a Feyre who is no longer capable of independent thought, who has been so thoroughly conditioned by Rhysand’s influence that she believes his version of events without question.
The Conclusion: Feyre’s Loss of Autonomy
By the end of the series, Feyre is no longer the independent, free-thinking individual she was at the start. She has been completely absorbed into the Night Court’s ideology, just as Winston is absorbed into the Party. Her identity, once defined by her own choices and beliefs, is now entirely tied to Rhysand and his court. She has become a willing participant in the very system that controls her, much like Winston’s final submission to Big Brother.
In conclusion, the parallels between ACOTAR and 1984 are hard to ignore. Both stories feature protagonists who are gradually stripped of their autonomy, manipulated by powerful figures into accepting a new reality. While Feyre’s journey is framed as one of empowerment, it is, in many ways, a tragic tale of brainwashing and control. Much like Winston in 1984, Feyre is reeducated to serve the interests of those in power, her resistance crushed under the weight of emotional manipulation and psychological conditioning. What Maas presents as Feyre’s liberation is, in fact, her submission to a new form of control—one that is just as insidious as the Party’s dominance over Winston’s world.
ting! Thanks for reading!!

"The Death of Eurydice" (#2 in my Orpheus and Eurydice series)
But the three Moirai (fates) weave and cut their strings of mortal’s destinies, and this love was not destined to last. Dancing barefoot upon the forest floor with the nymphs, Eurydice was bitten by a venomous snake and tragically died. Orpheus played such music of melancholy mourning as to make the trees bow and weep.
The Latin poet Virgil gives a lush description of lament from his poem, “Georgicks:”…“But the choir of sister Dryads filled the tops of the mountains with their cries: the rooks of Rhodope wept, and high Pangaea, and the martial land of Rhesus, and the Getae, and Hebrus, and Attic Orithyia. He assuaging his love-sick mind with his hollow lyre, lamented thee, sweet wife, thee on the solitary shore, thee when day approached, thee when it disappeared.” (-translated by John Martyn.)
We have multiple sources giving variations recounting Eurydice’s death. According to Ovid, she was walking along the riverside with her sister dryad nymphs, while Vergil has her escaping a rape attempt by another son of Apollo; a pastoral god named Aristaeus. But the authors agree that her death results from the bite of a poisonous viper.
As always, thanks for looking! And if you could share this post with your followers I'd be so grateful as to rescue you from the pits of tartarus with only my lyre. :D xoxo

imagine if Rhysand from the ACOTAR series met Jude from the TFOTA series?
don't get me wrong, I love Feyre and I love Cardan, but hear me out. I think both Feyre and Cardan improved as characters as the series progressed.
with Cardan, he eventually learned to lean into the role of a leader. initially, however, he never wanted to be a ruler, and a lot of his life revolved around causing mischief with his friends. (I'm not saying his upbringing was easy—how could it be, when his family was so shit—I'm just saying he was more mature by the end of the series than he was at the start).
with Feyre, one of the reasons I struggle so much to re-read the first book is because she undergoes so much character development. in the later books, she also learns to embrace the position of a ruler and stand on her own two feet. before she goes to rescue tamlin under the mountain, however, she feels very dependent and almost short-sighted, focusing on her immediate situation instead of thinking five steps ahead.
which brings me to my question: what if Jude and Rhysand met each other first? would they do well romantically, or would they just be very good friends?
I think the friendship part would happen one way or another. they've both experienced similar hardships with betrayal and responsibility. I think the same way that Rhysand admired Feyre's cunning and determination during Amarantha's trials, he would admire Jude's. the difference is that Jude would absolutely refuse to accept any help or show any weakness.
and although Rhysand and Cardan are similar in how they think and how they can both be very manipulative, I think there's a certain maturity to Rhysand's actions that we don't see in Cardan until later in the series. Rhysand makes a lot of poor choices, but then those choices are revealed to have the motive of protecting his people. I think that's something Jude could definitely respect.
as for the romance, I'm honestly not sure. I think maybe Rhysand and Jude could eventually learn to love each other, but they wouldn't have the immediate chemistry with sparks flying and fireworks popping that they do with their respective love interests. if they were to get into a relationship with each other, I think it would start as some sort of obligation—maybe an arranged marriage that benefits them in a political way—that eventually becomes authentic.
ultimately, I think the two book couples are perfect for each other. still, it's fun to wonder what-if?

Omg bestiee, I gotta know ur take on Villian!Katsuki x Hero!Reader. I genueinely love this but I don't see a lot on it😭 I just the forbidden love trope🤭
(i’m intrigued)
•”dynamight”
•a name akin to Voldemort from the Harry Potter series, people dreaded saying it. parents would even threaten their children, “if you don’t listen, dynamight will come steal you away.” dynamight was terrifying. uncontrollable.
•he moved mountains. topples skyscrapers. the people were at his mercy.
•he was a god, and a god to be feared.
•and you were gonna be the one to catch him.
•you were an up and coming hero but despite being young, you were strong. just like dynamight.
•when you first met him, you were afraid of him. you saw him terrorizing people and wreaking havoc and destroying lives and he was grinning. a malicious grin from ear to ear made you shiver.
•at this point, you were only a sidekick, so you were tasked with rescue.
•but once you were a full fledged hero, you realized the truth.
•he was a child. he was throwing tantrums because something didn’t go his way.
•the reason he freely destroyed and terrorized was because it was clear no one had ever told him no. no one kept him in check and now he was out of control.
•you were serious during the battles but dynamight clearly wasn’t. he’d taunt you and smirk and call you stupid names like “sweetheart” and “babe” and you hated it.
•you wanted to wipe that smirk off his face but you couldn’t
•because he’s stronger than you.
•he was playing with you
•then one day you found yourself pulled suddenly into an alley from the sidewalk and pinned against the wall by him
•”you say anything and i’ll kill you right here.”
•so you didn’t.
•and then he took you by complete shock by asking you to be a villain.
•you refused.
•a romance between hero! reader and villain! bakugo would be an agonizingly slow burn, but it would be so worth it. either a tragic tale of a hero’s heart stolen by a villain and reduced to corruption, or a heartwarming story of a villain whose heart was softened by a young, no-name hero.

hi how do you cope with stans having bad takes and their overall illiteracy and refusal to critique the misogyny homophobia and racism in Sarah’s works and continue to elevate her popularity when there are better authors who could do with her fame
Unfortunately the extreme fans of sarah janet's work are not alone in declining to put thought into the media they consume. I try not to engage directly - that usually ends badly. Generally I just mention I don't care for her work and move on. If they press me I say why.
Also I just generally try to recommend better books tbh. If someone says they like tog because they like that celaena has more than one love interest and doesn't end up with the first, I go 'oh! You may like Tamora Pierce. Most of her heroines have more than one love interest, and she also has stabby ladies!'
'I like the worldbuilding' may I interest you in the books of pellinor in this trying time, or The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms
'Fantasy romance' I admit I usually lean more fantasy than romance in my reading, but I DO enjoy Blackmantle despite a couple of issues, because 'rightful part-sidhe heir reclaims her family's throne and eventually has to rescue her foreverlove from death after which they live forever!'
Dark fae romance: daaaaark is a bit of a misnomer (for the romance part) but the Toby Daye series has fae galore and a stabby kickass heroine who solves a lot of her problems by punching them in the face. Her stepmom is a mermaid. One who punches people in the face. It's a thing. The High Mountain Court isn't exactly dark either but it has fae and sexy romance.
Anyway my point is this: I am of the firm belief that a lot of people find sarah janet's work compelling or original because they haven't had the chance to read the books she works from (and I don't even in this instance mean the Suspicious Similarities). I think, and have found, that ALMOST ALWAYS (*almost*) the fans of hers who start reading other things start drifting more towards those other things. I genuinely believe this is the true reason bloomsbury wanted to publish her work in YA: YA readers usually haven't been able to read as many books as adults who read, and can therefore be offered less original things without noticing.
I don't mean 'oh lol kids don't know what racism is' but I do mean that, at least in the US, media literacy is being hardcore removed from the curriculum. It is a skill that needs teaching and practice, not an innate talent that some people Just Ignore. If people are given a wider range of things to read, they will start to see more patterns and question why some books do this while others don't.
And I think that Bloomsbury and Sarah Janet herself, in managing her books and writing as they would a brand, are deliberately driving what is (questionably) called 'tribal marketing' and encouraging an 'us vs them' mentality. You'll note similar marketing tactics with apple products.

Calling all ACOTAR fans
ACOTAR (A Court of Thorns and Roses) is an upcoming fantasy and romance roleplay AU site based on the book series of the same name by Sarah J. Maas. The timeline is set to take place right after the wedding of Fayre Archeron & Tamlin, the High Lord of Spring. ACOTAR will be a character and plot-driven fantasy site where romance, vengeance, hate, lust, desire, and war will be its main ingredients. Will you be brave enough to stir the cauldron?
What if Feyre Archeron wasn't saved by Rhysand on her wedding day to Tamlin? What if High Priestess Ianthe and her family had been allied with Hybern all along? What if Ianthe somehow managed to save parts of Amarantha as the Attor did with Jurian and Hybern sought revenge and war upon the land of Prythian and its people starting with the Spring Court, with them both at his side?
After Feyre survives her trials under the mountain and Amarantha dies at the hands of Tamlin, she goes on with her life together with Tamlin. She is still living in the prison of Spring Court, but she will not be rescued by Rhysand on her wedding day leading to Feyre ending up being wed to Tamlin. The High Priestess Ianthe is a spy for Hybern and is doing all she can to nestle herself in with the High Lord of Spring Court, she might even go so far that she manages to seduce him - despite what Feyre has to say about it. Across Prythian the High Lord of Night Court is getting unsettling reports about Amarantha, who was believed to have died under the mountain, which is the reason why Rhysand isn't seeking out Feyre even when they have a bargain, even when he knows that she is his mate.

Recently Read
I was waffling on doing “this is what I’ve read recently” posts but then @separatist-apologist said she would appreciate it and my relationship to her is basically the “anything for you, Beyoncé” vine so--
Not an exhaustive list of everything I’ve read in the past few months, but some of the fun stuff!
The Galactic Zookeeper’s Guide to Heists and Husbandry, A.C. Huntley Sci-fi comedy
I’m signed up to receive ARCs from Hidden Gems in exchange for reviews, and this was one of those books. Very fun! A zookeeper stumbles upon an opportunity to smuggle a rare animal to a mob boss for a bunch of money and proceeds to try and do so-- with very little planning or idea of how she’ll do it. She’s winging this thing, and once you get used to her occasional idiocy and the stress, it’s pretty funny. The author threw in romance, but it was meh. Read for the shenanigans, but don’t expect too much. I thought the author could have made our protagonist’s backstory a bit more tragic and angsty, but y’all know who I am lol.
A Soul to Touch, Opal Reyne Monster Romance
Third book in the Duskwalker Brides series. This is for the monsterfuckers out there. I love these books for the well-developed, unique characters, the interesting world, and solid plots. And yeah, there’s explicit monster fucking. A Soul to Touch was an enjoyable continuation of the series, I think I liked it more than the second book? What stands out is that our monsters are all VERY different, which sometimes doesn’t happen with love interests. But these monsters have unique personalities, problems, wants, and ideas of how the world should be. Same with our female protagonists. If you don’t mind some explicit sex with monsters (or are, in fact, in search of that), try this series out. It's not all sex though, I promise.
Class Five Series, Michelle Diener Sci-Fi Romance
I did post about this before, but I’ll do it again. I’ll start out by saying that in contrast to the series above, the love interests in this series are a bit cookie-cutter. But if you can get past that, this is a sci-fi series with some politics, AI (like, real AI), romance, aliens, and moral dilemmas. It can be cheesy, the romance can feel rushed, and the alien love-interests are quite human. But I freaking loved the world-building. The books would be better if the love interests weren’t all space military men from the same species, but meh. Still entertaining.
The Intersolar Union Series, Etta Pierce Sci-Fi Alien Romance
Notice I say “alien” this time because these guys really are aliens. If Class Five is too simple for you, this one has more violence, explicit scenes, higher stakes, just overall feels more mature. Over 1000 humans are kidnapped from Earth for sex trafficking, and in the first book our main character works with the Alien Special Forces (sort of) to save them. Different couples! Different aliens! Angsty at times, steamy, and there are occasionally tentacles if you are into that. Lots of work went into this world building and the characters. Still need to read the latest book but I’m super excited for it.
Mont Blanc Rescue Series, J.R. Pace Action and Adventure Romance
A new genre for me, got introduced to it through some ARCs. I find the military-love interest books hit or miss, but this series follows a group of people who are part of a search and rescue team so like. Less opportunity for cringe, plenty of action and guns and peril because ya girl needs that sometimes. Relatively simple and tame books, but fun super quick reads. The author is good with details and knows their stuff. I would like to go to the mountains now.

Laughing at the Bottomless Pit (2022) 笑闹无底洞
Director: Yu Hongbo Starring: Wang Ning / An Weiling / Xue Wen / Sang Ping / Song Xi / Li Yu Genre: Comedy / Romance / Costume Country/Region of Production: Mainland China Language: Mandarin Chinese Date: 2022-06-19 (Mainland China Internet) Type: Retelling
Summary:
"The Bottomless Pit of Laughter" is a nonsensical romantic comedy movie that tells the story of a series of love entanglements that occurred after Tang Monk met a white rat spirit in a bottomless pit. The White Mouse Spirit (Xiao Bai) turned out to be a white mouse in Lingshan. She was knocked down to the mortal world for stealing lamp oil in front of the Buddha. When Xiaobai was in Lingshan, she was taken care of by Jin Chanzi, the second disciple of Tathagata Buddha, and she never forgets Jin Chanzi. Xiaobai, who fell into the mortal world, devoted himself to cultivation, hoping to return to Lingshan as soon as possible and reunite with Jin Chanzi.
The Red Rat Spirit (Xiaohong) was originally a little red mouse in the mortal world. Because they were sworn brothers to the White Rat, the two became sisters. Under the inspiration of the White Rat, they practiced together and transformed into human form. The two lived in the bottomless cave of Zengkong Mountain and depended on each other. One day, Xiaobai went astray in her cultivation and became a demon and her life was in danger. She needed to find someone from Zhiyang to replenish his energy in order to survive the crisis. It happened that Tang Seng's master and apprentice passed by here, and Tang Seng happened to be a man of great beauty.
Xiaobai transformed into a woman in distress and was rescued by Tang Seng. Xiaohong followed secretly on the other side. The two designed to take Tang Seng away and trap him in a bottomless pit. When Tang Monk woke up, the White Rat Spirit launched a fierce offensive against Tang Monk, and said that she did not want to hurt him, but only wanted to spend the night together. Tang Monk was indifferent to the various temptations of the White Rat Spirit, and resolved his refusal with wit and cleverness. He only wanted to escape from the bottomless pit. At this time, Wukong arrived, and Xiaohong fought against Wukong. Wukong was defenseless due to the heavy evil spirit in the cave, and was forced to jump out of the cave after a few rounds.
While fighting with Tang Seng, Xiaobai accidentally discovered that there was the same mark as Jin Chanzi on the back of Tang Seng's neck. Xiaobai was very excited. It turned out that Tang Seng was the reincarnation of Jin Chanzi, but Tang Seng had forgotten his previous life. Xiaobai tried to make Tang Seng remember his previous life.

:D xoxo
