he felt the small puff of air you let out against his neck, hoping you didn’t realize his posture stiffening at every breath that left him, when in reality, you were trying your damndest to not lean your head on his back right then and there. a few days prior, you had made a passing joke when visiting cloud about the well kept condition he had his bike in, making a small comment as you thought aloud about what it’d be like to ride it.

and what you didn’t expect was to receive a call a few days later telling you to come outside as you heard the muffled groan of the engine in the background of the phone call— and you definitely didn’t expect to be wrapping your arms around cloud’s waist while you shrieked at the purposeful buck of the bike he did to scare you. you could’ve sworn you felt the rumble of a chuckle bloom in his chest at the noise, too.

“to be fair, i didn’t decide to. you were already outside.” you retorted, retracing one arm to point a finger at cloud as he barely turned his head to the side, only giving you a slight view of the slope of his nose. a quick rumble of the engine made you tense up real quick, closing your mouth as your hands immediately darted for cloud’s waist. he let out a choked hum of surprise, and you could’ve sworn you saw his gloved grip tighten on the handles.

part one (part 2!)

summary: you are an up and coming courier for organized criminals. you bump into buzzed and confident John at a cocktail party while you’re in the middle of work, but you let him know you don’t have time for his games.

John wasn’t one for parties. Well, he pretended that he wasn’t one for parties. It’s part of the image, the gruff and tough hitman, best in the world. He had a reputation to uphold.

But he wouldn’t deny a good drink and some conversation every once in a while.

The bar and lounge area in the Continental was quite, well, bustling. Filled with assassins, crime lords, you name it. If they were someone in the criminal underworld in NYC, they were here tonight. John could feel the tension between gangs in the air, the rules of the hotel hung above everyone’s head.

No business conducted on hotel grounds.

Of course, no one dared to break that rule.

Here was John, in a congregation of hitmen that he has known over the past several decades. Chatting it up with booze in hand, and on their breath. Some would call them OGs. In the game long enough for people in the industry to know not to fuck with them. Especially John. These old dogs didn’t need new tricks, in fact, all of them had body counts that combined, would make the High Table shudder.

But of course, what comes up, eventually must come down. They were aging men. As early as their late 30s, and as late as their mid 50s. There was fresh meat lurking on the sidelines, waiting for their chance to be in the spotlight.

And that’s were she comes in.

Y/N.

New to the game. Well, fairly new. She wasn’t an expert, however, she was very good at what she did. Was she a killer for hire? Not exactly. Y/N had created an industry no one in the underworld knew was needed. In fact, it was very convenient.

An anonymous courier business.

You need to send over files but the Feds are on your ass and probably have acess to your fax machine? Call Y/N. She’ll be at your door in 20 minutes to drive across the city to deliver it for you. You forget it’s your wife’s birthday because you were too busy pile driving your side piece to remember? Y/N will pick up something for her at Target and get it to your door in an hour.

You get the idea.

Have a hard drive of the password to a Bitcoin account that’s worth 5 million dollars? Y/N will bring it to whoever needs it in the city, on her modified motorcycle, gun on hip and helmet on head, safe and sound. She had a perfect track record of delivering things for crime syndicates around New York City for the past year and a half.

Enemies? Not for Y/N. Every criminal group used her services. So much in fact, she had even hired a small team. She was growing. Slowly. But growing.

It wouldn’t take long for John to notice Y/N. In fact, he would take notice in a few moments, right after he took a large sip of his bourbon that he just had to have tonight. John was chuckling amongst colleagues, as he noticed Y/N walk into the lounge, seemingly with work on her mind. Her helmet was still on her head, and she wore a form fitting protective biker suit that matched everything she wore.

Black.

John frowned in confusion. He’s never seen anyone wear full motorcycle gear into the hotel before, much less one that was sort of crashing a party.

Y/N walked quickly, right up to the man himself, Winston. She wasted no time, unzipping her well organized backpack and handing Winston a protected manilla envelope, with god knows what inside. The elderly man smiled kindly at the helmeted woman, quickly signing some sort of touch screen device with his finger, before she efficiently put her bag back on over her shoulder, and began to walk away.

John raised his eyebrows at the sight. Who was that? He couldn’t help but form a soft but playful grin as his eyes danced around her figure that was covered by that riding suit.

“Any of you recognize that one?” John blurted during a discussion his friends were having. The men turned their heads towards Y/N, all chuckling softly.

“Yeah, Y/N. She works this delivery service for people like us in the city. Super under the table type stuff. You seriously haven’t heard of her?” Marcus asked, as John shook his head.

“No. I’m not familiar.” John huffed out. John was a curious man, and he just had to know more. So, enticed by this mystery woman, he wriggled through the thick crowd of guests to catch up to her. Before she could make it any closer to the door, John gave her a light tap on the shoulder. The woman jumped a bit, before turning around.

There he was. The man. The myth. The legend. John fucking Wick. Y/N almost froze in fear at the mere sight of the man who towered over her. She had to swallow the lump that formed in her throat.

John stared down at her, trying his best to look through the blacked out facial shield on her biker helmet. He was just itching to know what she looked like. Guess he’d do it himself. He was a man of little words after all. What was she going to do, fight him?

John took his large hands and placed them on her helmet, applying pressure and lifting it up and off of her head.

“H-hey! What the hell?” Y/N stuttered out, as John took a moment to study her delicate features.

Wow, she’s fairly easy on the eyes. John thought to himself as his eyes trailed all over her face. With nice cheekbones and gorgeous eyes, anyone who had sight could tell that this was a woman you could never forget. An impish smile curled onto the man’s lips, his very well maintained black beard framing his mouth to perfection. Y/N unintentionally took in his scent of patchouli and tobacco. Of course she could also smell the whiskey on his breath but that went without saying.

“Well, aren’t you just a pretty thing?” John hummed out softly at the young woman, as she grabbed her helmet and plucked it with force from his grip. It was clear that this infamous hitman had a few bourbons to drink already tonight, and he didn’t mind finding a pretty woman to take up to a hotel room after a few more.

Y/N grumbled as John bit his tongue to force himself not to say anything else in this moment.

I’ve only heard stories about this guy, scary ass stories. What a pain in my ass. Better deal with him so I don’t make an enemy.

John was maybe a decade or two older than her. Jesus christ. Y/N had daddy issues but this would be a whole other level if she decided to even pursue something like John.

“Sorry. I gotta go, still working.” Y/N spoke to him as professionally as possible. John displayed a perky smile on his face, his eyes racing with attraction.

Just look at her. I’d be crazy if I didn’t shoot my shot.

“You can’t do just one drink with me? I’m sure your client would understand if they knew who you were with.” John offered, gesturing towards the hotel lounge full of people.

Y/N laughed nervously, her heart racing at the mere sight of this man. The way this older man with obvious charisma was certainly getting to her.

And here John was, thinking about how pretty Y/N’s lips would look wrapped around his hard cock. Her head bobbing as he used his large strong hands to grab a fistful of hair, making her take him deeper into her throat each time. Maybe she’d gag and plead with him to be gentle. Maybe she’d be a total pro at it. Maybe a mix of both. With tears in her eyes as she whimpers in pain, while her legs trembled for John to make his way over to spread them apart for the real fun.

“I’m really sorry, I just have a few jobs-”

John’s long pointer finger swooped under her soft chin, lifting her face to meet his gaze. Y/N had no idea what to do, there has never been a man this forward towards her in her life. Just the thought of John’s touch alone made hundreds of women wet with excitement. Y/N knew she shouldn’t be one of them, it wasn’t smart mixing work and love.

As they say, don’t shit where you eat.

John could sense tension striking the area where they stood. Right now, there was nobody else in the room besides for this woman. He took her as a challenge, new blood. Young, pretty, and probably naive, right? Someone he could have a bit of fun with upstairs after he bought her a few drinks.

If John were sober right now, he would have probably said ‘goodbye’ in a polite and formal way, smiling as she left the building. John with some liquor in him though, was a completely different man. The rumors people spoke in the criminal underworld were true, this man though and though, was a total playboy.

So of course, when a new and unfamiliar pretty face in town crossed his path, he just had to have her. At least for the night. He was especially curious about what she had underneath that form fitting riding suit, not that it left too much up to the imagination.

Y/N cleared her throat.

“Right, uh, I’m gonna, uh, go.” Y/N mumbled, pulling away from John’s electrifying touch, taking a subtle deep breath. John blinked his brown eyes of his a few times, almost lost in his train of thought in the few moments that he had her in his gentle but firm grasp.

Before he knew it, she was hurrying out of the hotel doors. Y/N didn’t think twice to get out of that awkward/terrifying/intimate situation. So many emotions were flowing through her at once, her heart beating at about a mile a minute. It didn’t take long for her to climb onto her motorcycle, start it up, and peel off down the busy street, away from that god forsaken hotel.

And then there was John. Shocked, stunned even. A woman who didn’t immediately jump at the chance to have drinks with him? Unbelievable.

He could hear his group of fellow middle aged hitmen snicker at his failed attempt at picking up the woman, and all he could do was clench his jaw, and walk back to the bar.

They’d meet again. Of course. It would take some time, John was a patient man, and Y/N was a working woman. Their paths would eventually cross again, especially in the industry they were involved in.

And maybe, just maybe, John could have his chance with Y/N, and actually convince her to have that drink with him.

Even if it was just for some fun.

Why Rondônia is the state that kills the most women in Brazil

The state has the highest femicide rate in the country, almost triple the national average. Lack of police preparation, impunity and the rise of fundamentalist churches contribute to the scenario, experts point out.

It's been three months since Carla* (whose name was changed by the report) has seen her children. The last time she tried, on the eve of Mother's Day, she was stabbed by her ex-husband in front of her house. The blows left marks on the chest, arms and hands. The attacker only stopped because a motorcycle courier passing by on the street caught him, and Carla managed to escape.

"He tried to take out my eye and break my neck," Carla tells DW. "He just didn't kill me because he didn't have a gun," says the victim over the phone.

In order to live, Carla, 34 years old, hid. She had been married since she was 18 to her attacker, who was always jealous. The problem escalated when she passed a public exam and went abroad for training. That's when she discovered that she was being spied on through an app secretly installed on her cell phone by her husband.

The attempted femicide is being investigated by the Civil Police of Rondônia, where the crime occurred. The state has the highest femicide rate in Brazil: there were 3.1 victims per 100,000 inhabitants in 2022. The number is more than double the national average, which was 1.4, according to data from the Brazilian Public Security Yearbook.

The state is also the champion in female homicides – the rate was 11.2 victims per 100 thousand inhabitants, almost four times above the country's average (3.9).

"Here, as in every society, we still live in a very deep-rooted, very strong system of patriarchy, with sexist ideologies. This contributes to the objectification and subjugation of women", comments Débora Machado, from the Rondônia Public Defender's Office, who followed Carla's case.

Absence and unpreparedness of the State

Studies on femicide classify this crime as the "final part" of a process of worsening violence, marked by terror, disregard, or discrimination against the condition of women. Considered heinous by Law No. 13,104, of 2015, femicide is preventable: public prevention, protection, and reception policies are identified as efficient tools.

"The woman reports it and she often has nowhere to go. Even when there is a protective measure given by the courts, the aggressor does not stop pursuing the woman because he imagines that the police will not arrive in time to prevent the crime. And they indeed don't arrive", analyzes Benedita Nascimento, activist and founding member of the Popular Women's Forum and the Articulated Movement of Amazon Women, in Rondônia.

For Nascimento, who works in the network to combat domestic violence in the capital Porto Velho, the commitment of delegates and prosecutors is remarkable, but the lack of personnel helps explain the high rate of femicide.

"There is a service deficit in the area of public security. The women's police stations do not have the necessary equipment, technical staff, and sufficient police officers. That is why women are dying", he explains, pointing out that there are eight specialized police stations for all 52 municipalities in Rondônia.

When questioned, the state Public Security Secretariat did not respond.

In addition to the absence of the state, Nascimento sees several sectors of society being unprepared to face the serious scenario. "I'm talking about schools, basic health units, family doctor teams, leaders in churches who are not prepared to read the signs of a woman, a family, who lives in a situation of violence. We have a particular action of social movements, but the rest is missing", he states.

Churches and oppression of women

With a critical look at society's behavior, Marcia Oliveira, professor at the Federal University of Roraima (Federal University of Roraima - UFRR) and researcher at the Migration Observatory in Rondônia, linked to the Federal University of Rondônia (UNIR), has been studying the context of the production of this violence for years.

"It has been being built. In the Amazon, historically, there has been a lot of violence in the formation of the states themselves. It is a continuous process of violation of human rights, violence against indigenous people, the poorest. A state of violence is being created", highlights Oliveira in interview with DW.

The growth in the political field of the conservative right, argues Oliveira, would have an influence in causing the silencing of women, especially in social movements, and promoting the repression of female political participation in political frameworks.

Another point would have to do with the expansion of evangelical churches in the region. "Honour killing seems more acceptable in Rondônia and other states in the North, such as Roraima. This has to do with the increase in fundamentalist religions, in which women are treated with a lot of submission, with a lot of subjugation", argues Oliveira, a doctor in Society and Culture in the Amazon by the Federal University of Amazonas (UFAM).

A recent survey signed by Victor Araújo, a researcher associated with the Center for Metropolis Studies, with headquarters at the University of São Paulo (USP) and the Brazilian Center for Analysis and Planning (Cebrap), showed that in 2019, 6,356 evangelical churches were opened in Brazil – an average of 17 new churches per day.

Rondônia stands out as an emblematic example of this expansion: second to last in the ranking of Brazilian states with the highest number of evangelical churches in the 1970s, Rondônia began to appear among the top five as of 2000. In 2019, there were 60 evangelical churches per 100 thousand inhabitants in that state.

Crimes are not investigated

In addition to the omission of the state and the unpreparedness of the police, guided by a public security policy focused on repression and not prevention, according to experts interviewed by Deutsche Welle, impunity is a major variable in the high number of femicides.

Another research led by Márcia Oliveira in the state of Roraima, which has the second highest rate of female homicides (10.8), most crimes are not investigated by the police. According to Oliveira, 70% of the officially registered cases of femicide that occurred during the pandemic occurred in mining regions.

"None of these cases had an ongoing investigation process, they were simply archived due to a lack of investigation conditions. In other words, crimes in mining areas are not investigated", comments the researcher.

Many of the murdered women were taken to areas of illegal activity in the Amazon to work as general service providers, such as cooks, and sexual services. "Crimes occur in a banal way. A woman who supplied food, for example, demanded her payment for the week. The miner simply shot her in the chest, turned his back and walked away. In front of a lot of people. And no one retains this person", cites one of the cases.

"I want him arrested"

Already alarming, the number of women who suffer violence in Brazil may be underreported. That's why Silvana Mariano, professor at the State University of Londrina (UEL) and coordinator of the Femicide Studies Laboratory (Lesfem), is betting on a different methodology to question official information.

"We believe that the data provided by Public Security departments is undersized. According to the methodology we adopted, we predominantly use press sources and sources in the territories and, from these, we reach other publications", explains Mariano.

For Lesfem researchers, just counting the crime is not enough, it is necessary to know more about the victims and the circumstances they lived in. "Before the crime is consummated as femicide, the circumstances involve violation of women's rights that are crossed by differences in power, which favor men, and which involve disregard for women", analyzes the scientist.

For Carla, who survived the femicide attempt, the attacker will never give up on annihilating the victim. "I wanted him to be arrested, he needs to be stopped. It's very difficult to say that. My daughter will suffer a lot. But he has to be arrested. How am I going to live my life if I don't even know where he is? I really want my children near me soon."

Taking in packages, always in record time for delivery, speeding down Midgar's highways on your Hardy Daytona (long story how you managed to hack one of those unbeknownst to SHINRA, a story for another day) at top speeds, these freedoms were the lifeblood of your day.

Being "the best courier service" was a reputation that took time to build, and it wasn't an easy feat.

11 years ago, abandoned by the "love of your life," leaving you in Nibelheim with no word or promise of return, you learned to fend for yourself..

"Fight or die trying, no one's gonna save me"....a lesson from the backwaters. Zangan knew you had the will to fight. His training gave you the edge you needed to push yourself forward and forge a new life...elsewhere.

Midgar hadn't been the first plan. It was, in fact, plan B, but plan B was working like a charm. Deliveries required, fast pace, motorcycle skill, eye for detail (figuring out the fastest routes), and muscle. Thieves everywhere, always trying to steal anything in their territory. Corneo's lackeys were the worst.  No one figured out how they made it topside, but his sneaks knew the best places to catch a delivery driver solo, ESPECIALLY a female driver, so it was always ride like the wind and watch your back.

Life began to fit, AND BOY OH BOY DID THE GILL roll in... but living modestly was the key.  Keep a low profile, save the gil, live fast, trust NO ONE.

11 years flew by, like the sand that seeps through a sieve, unnoticed.

The heart grows hard this way, they say.

There was no need for love that was gone.

They’d found her in the scrap. 

Abandoned, rusting, practically beyond any reasonable repair. Roche and two other boys befriended and wholly terrible influences on a young boy not yet into his teen years. 

The remnants of a motorcycle, buried in the rubble bordering Sector 5. Monsters would dwell here, silly bouncy hedgehog pie, funny to look at but honing a rather nasty bite if one was unfortunate to get close enough. But the bike, all gears, chains and frame work, not even a single tyre to roll her down a hill for the fun of it; she was enough to fight back the beasts, to play SOLDIER’s and pretend that this machine, lost to the ages, was still running, with an engine which could roar and taking them all on the most epic of adventures. 

The other two soon grew bored of these games, but Roche’s fascination with the bike remained. Obsessed with her, in fact, that this alone gave him all the reason he needed to keep returning to the orphanage. To borrow books from the locals in return for basic chores about the basic anatomy and maintenance of motorcycles, whatever he could find and however he could pay for it, through services such as sweeping, couriering and the like. 

Parts were found within the scrap, cobbled together into the vague resemblance of the motorcycles he’d spied upon the screen in the central square of the undercity, her parts she still had scrubbed clean with dish soap and wire wool pilfered from local merchants. 

He affectionately named her Bessie. The best bike he ever did see. 

Two years did Roche work, painstakingly on this project of his, learning how she could possibly work again, the unattainable dream of riding her atop the plate, until ShinRa decided his services were best utilised over the ocean in Wutai at age 12. 

And Bessie was once more, left to rot into the scrap where he had found her.

The handyman here tells about earlier times when he had a Dory(rowboat) on the New river which divides Belize from mexico and had a thriving trade, moving bales of grass into Mexico and illegal immigrants into Belize.
