Transit votes fail in Cobb & Gwinnett and I'm weary

Voters in Cobb and Gwinnett Counties both rejected chances to boost funding for transit in this election. What the fudge, people?

The hope was that voters would be more likely to support these measure than previous ones because this time they weren't about joining MARTA.

Seems like they might as well have made them MARTA votes after all.

The transit-tax referendums would have supported new bus lines and rapid transit systems. Only 38% of votes in Cobb supported theirs; though it was at least closer in Gwinnett, with 47% in support of theirs.

And in case you needed another reminder that "shared identity doesn't necessarily equal shared goals" -- Cobb and Gwinnett both voted blue in this election. They just didn't feel like going all the way and supporting transit.

So the struggle bus continues to struggle, and of course it's the most vulnerable among us who suffer when transit options are weak. I had hoped things were changing for the better with support for transit ridership in the core counties. Maybe they are in a very slow way, but slow acknowledgement of the needs for sustainable, equitable mobility isn't good enough in 2024.

What action can we take? For now, support the *heck* (pardon my language) out of proposals to add affordable housing near existing transit lines, especially ones with good pedestrian infrastructure. Market-rate housing is needed in these spots too and we shouldn't block those, but obviously affordable units are the biggest need. Dense up.

And support the ever-loving *shizzle* out of any proposal to improve existing transit conditions so that riding buses (and trains) is an obviously awesome option.

i just miss like that atmosphere of 100% unmarketable, just comic sharing/making space.

where we all knew that 99% of the time the comics we see will never get finished bc ppl get busy, kids grow up and change interests ,etc. (i mention kids bc most of my memories of smackjeeves was when i was a teen, so it was a significant like developmental years as an artist kind experience for me)

like i remember most of the comics were like

barely legible sketch pages with like text written in mspaint.

there was absolutely no quality standard. and that's why it was so good

it made me as a kid feel like oh i can do comics! cause it can be WHATEVER YOU WANTED IT TO BE AND LOOK HOWEVER WAY.

and the collaborative ones on smackjeeves were so fun to look at

GOFUND ME FOR WHEELCHAIR AND SERVICE DOG

Hello! My name is Viridian! I'm a college student working two jobs in the Denver area to cover my tuition, rent, groceries, and other bills. I'm disabled and need a cane to walk and a wheelchair when I need to.

One of my jobs right now is a sales position and requires a lot of walking. Unfortunately, the wheelchair I have right now is ancient and too large to have a chance at helping me get around when I have a high-pain day at work. I also have seizures that get worse the more stressed I get, so the two jobs and school help nothing in that department. I've been trying to get a service dog for a long time but in my situation I cannot seem to gather the funds myself.

The service dog will be able to help me manage, prevent, and safely deal with my seizures. I'll be training her to also be able to help me move around easier such as being able to pick up/hold my cane at work when I need her too as well as pick up things I drop especially when I'm in my wheelchair. She'll also be trained to be able to get me help if I fall or am actively having a seizure.

These funds I am raising are going to be enough for me to be able to:

Buy a new custom wheelchair that fits my needs: $1.5-2k depending on where I can get it and what features I can get that'll make it fit my needs and how much insurance will cover.

Purchase a dog I can train for service: $2k for the purchase, $1-2k for beginning vet bills

Buy the food and supplies the dog requires: $500

Fund the obedience and service training she needs to be fully certified: $800

These things will overall improve my quality of life, safety, and health.

TLDR: I am fundraising for a new wheelchair and a service dog.

I've been using a cane for several months now but I'm beginning to realize I'm still expending more energy than I have. I can't make it through a grocery store trip without being exhausted and in pain. I can't go for walks anymore like I used to enjoy so much. I struggle to go anywhere to hangout with my friends because if it requires a lot of walking I have to turn the plans down. Even just standing takes so much energy that I feel exhausted in my bones. It feels like my entire life has become me confined to the house, never getting to go out and enjoy the world anymore. I have decided to get a wheelchair so I can gain some independence back. I want to live my life again, with less pain and more energy. I want to go out and make experiences and new memories. I'm tired of feeling left behind due to my condition and fatigue. I'm going to save up for a wheelchair the best that I can, but since I'm unemployed and still not approved for disability yet I don't have any income. I'm coming to my community to see if I can crowd fund/get some donations towards my goal since mobility aids are not cheap. A Democratic super PAC is targeting Republicans over potential IVF restrictions, which started earlier this year when the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that state laws protecting “unborn children” also apply to those “located outside of a biological uterus.” IVF (in vitro fertilization) is a process where several fertilized embryos are created outside the uterus and then implanted in order to help a person get pregnant. The process uses multiple embryos to increase the chances of resulting in a pregnancy, and extra embryos can be frozen and sometimes destroyed. Many same-sex couples use the procedure to help build their families.

Some conservatives oppose IVF because of the destruction of embryos, and the Alabama Supreme Court cited the Bible in its ruling, which resulted in several clinics in the state stopping their IVF procedures. The Progress Action Fund launched a new ad called “Republicans Stealing Your Baby” last week, which shows a straight white couple with a baby who they refer to as their “IVF miracle.” Then, an old white Republican lawmaker appears and takes the baby away. “Sorry, she’s not yours anymore,” he says. “I’m your Republican congressman. We made IVF illegal, and we’re not letting you criminals raise her.”  “You can’t do this, she’s our baby!” the mother says. “I won the last election, so it’s my decision,” the Republican responds. “If you want a baby, you have to make one the old-fashioned way, and I’ll be watching.”
