Why should you keep your shoulders mobile?
The shoulders are possibly the most important and the most complicated joint in the human body, therefore it is vital to keep the shoulder well maintained and prevent injury, rather than waiting to rehab an injury. 
The shoulder has ten different types of movement making it the joint with the largest range of motion and therefore the joint which is most prone to injury. 
For the shoulder joints to stay mobile and healthy they rely on the proper function of the scapula. 
Basically you need strong shoulder blades, the bench press, rowing, overhead work and indeed the grip for a back squat rely on scapular retraction. Pull ups and chin ups rely on scapular stability. 
Any movement where your arms are moving relies on the shoulders, meaning that they factor into every upper body exercise you perform. 
Maintaining shoulder function doesn't just require strong deltoids or big traps (sorry guys) it involves strengthening, working and maintaining every part of the shoulder. 
How do you test whether your shoulder blades and shoulders need prehab work, below are two useful ways of self-analysing your shoulders:
1. Stand up straight and relaxed, a normal stance and posture. Grab two long straight items in each hand (pens, pencil, ruler) hold them in your fists and let your hands drop by your side and again relax. The items should be pointing straight ahead, if they are angling inward, your shoulders are slumping forward and you need to work on your scapular retraction. 
2. Raise both arms as if you are waving goodbye, hands should be about ear height, and your elbows should be at about 90 degrees. Maintain that arm position, push your arms and elbows back by retracting your scapula. Ideally both arms should go back equal distances. If one arm lags behind you probably need extra work on that side.
Tips for avoiding shoulder issues
Scapular retraction during bench press
You need to create the shelf when you press. Tighten your shoulder blades and have someone pass the bar to you, keep your shoulder blades tight throughout the movement. Arch your back a bit to help.
Scapular retraction during rows
The same goes for rows, maintain those tight shoulder blades at the bottom as well instead of protracting them. Straighten your arms but dont let your shoulders drift forward to.
Avoid the wrong types of movement
Avoid upright rows - they are bad for your rotator cuffs and you can work the same muscles with better lifts.
Dont do lateral raises with your arms directly at your sides, move your arms forward about 30 degrees and lift them that way, thereby avoiding pinching your rotator cuff.
If you cant avoid shoulder pain while performing the bench press try doing a floor press or weighted push up instead.
Avoid pain
Soreness is ok, but pain is not so avoid movement that causes pain in your shoulders.
