The Gundam 00 Special Edition movies 2 and 3 are pretty good. As someone who enjoyed s1 more than s2, SE does a great job of truncating s2 into two 100 minute films, cutting a lot of the filler and excessive number of Innovators and makes the whole thing overall a bit more cohesive.
Sadly SE1, though great for watching some action scenes, cuts a lot of the smaller character moments , particularly Saji and Louise and their families' stories, as it's trying to fit 25 episodes into a single movie instead of two.
We don't get to see any of Kinue's investigations, nor spend time with Louise's mother, both of which add to the tragedy which comes later. While that moment remains in the film, it loses a lot of pact from having barely spent time with these people.
I loved their storyline because it reflected the lives of two people essentially so far removed from the central conflict and yet through tragic happenstance became embroiled in it nonetheless. You need that romcom dynamic of theirs to start with, otherwise there's no contrast.
Similarly, some of the big deaths don't get time to breathe, and I think especially that one big death towards the end loses something by not going almost immediately into the ED song Friends by Stephanie.
So for me, the ideal watch order is Season 1 in full, Special Edition films 2 and 3, and then A Wakening of The Trailblazer.

Kitarou Tanjou Gegege no Nazo, Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny Special Edition Final The Cost of Freedom HD Remaster, In Love and Deep Water, Copo A Copo, Out, SUNRISE TO SUNSET, Shohei Ohtani - Beyond the Dream, Japanese Film Trailers
Welcome to the first of three trailer posts for this week This is another busy week but not as busy as last week. I’m about midway through Project X Zone and looking to complete it in the first half of November. This is a tactical RPG where players move teams of sprite-based characters around 3D environments to engage enemy forces. Once engaged, colourful anime artwork lights up the screen as…

In this world there’s good shows and there’s bad shows, there’s many shades in between. New Mobile Report Gundam Wing is none of that.
If this is a good show. (the axes mean nothing and ignore the limited nature of the visual metaphor, art is a lot more nuanced than this)
Tumblr media
And this is a bad show.
Tumblr media
This is Gundam Wing.
Tumblr media
The core of the shows is alright at worse, but there’s some elements that just suck really bad, and a few that are way better but don’t make up for the rest.
The music. The OPs and EDs are really good (all of them), lots of great background tracks too. (The Boy Who Stole the Wings of Adolescence is great)
The costume designs. The design of the costumes is the single greatest thing about the whole show.
Tumblr media
The mechanical designs. The designs of the grunt suits are just great, Leo, Aries, Tallgeese, and later the Serpent are all great designs.
Now for the bad:
The characters. Except for Duo who’s a funny guy there’s really not much to the main cast. Wu Fei’s got 3 things going on: Nataku good, people who fight bad. I’m not worthy of piloting Nataku. Trowa does have a character arc with the whole circus and amnesia things, EW does add a bit to his character but I don’t know if I care much for that. Quatre has the his relationship to the Maganac corps and 3 lines about his family and is imo the least likeable of the main cast with Wu Fei. Heero like to blow his gundam up mostly, the whole shtick about wanting to kill Relena is the most interesting thing going on about him, especially when it comes to Relena becoming queen.
Tumblr media
The Gundams are lame. Gundams are cool, but Gundam Wings didn’t think they were cool enough, so it tried too hard and make them lame. I’m not a big fan of hyper-specialised Gundam, but Gundam X did that worse. They’re also way too powerful for the show’s own good. I don't think there's much fun to seeing Heero vaporize a dozen Leo in 1 buster rifle shot in all that often. The episode in 0079 where Zeon Solders on Wappa placed bomb on the Gundam had weight to it. Now someone is trying to blow the sandrock up, why should I care it won't even get scratch. It just eleminates any stakes for the sake of "wow look at the gundam it's so powerful". It’s not like there’s no instance of the show depicting the suits as strong but not overpowered.
Tumblr media
But then it’s back to this immediately after.
Tumblr media
And finally the ???
The Mobile Dolls. It’s an interesting concept, they show even exploits that concept in interesting ways, until they’re put into mass production and now they’re just cannon-fodder free of any human tragedy and they’re as uninteresting as could be
The plot. I think there’s interesting ideas in there, the early episodes reflect the Zabi’s (mostly implied at the time) rise to power, and that’s genuienly really cool, later events feel like they’re inspired by events of previous show while it adds some unique context around it, and the end is just Zech’s Counterattack. But the end results is just so muddled, so much so that I still haven’t managed to wrap my brain around it. Too many backstabbings / episode.
1st episode. It’s really cool, for the above mentioned reason, but also because it’s just a really well made episode, and then the Gundam shows up and do the things Gundams do in Gundam Wing
Now Endless Waltz
a.k.a “Actually operation Meteor was eeeeeevil” the movie. And it feels very inconsequential
The whole thing about operation meteor is cool but I wonder if it wouldn’t have been more interesting in the show.
At the end of the day I didn’t hate watching Wing, I had a decent time even. I don’t regret watching it either after putting it off for a certain amount of time, but I’d have been just fine not having watched it, I don’t feel like I missed on anything all that time.

Today, I would like to talk about the Gundam Kitties. These little guys appeared in furoku (greeting cards, stickers, various printed goodies) in Out Magazine.
Edit as of 12/07/2024, with thanks to @retroanimechris, at the bottom of the article.
Out Magazine is in this case not a gay mag, despite being responsible for this Prime Specimen. Out Magazine was an early otaku magazine, launched in the early 80's. It contained stickers and postcards, and even manga drawn to parody animé currently running. I first saw these kitties featured in old Charma doujinshi (Thank you @kishigunpla), so seeing them in semi-official things was quite a surprise.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Note how vastly different these are to the 'focus' or whatever of the series in question. Mobile Suit Gundam was a serious, hard sci-fi story focused on the White Base crew. These postcards feature mainly the 'bad guys' in adorable kitty guise, reminiscent of shoujo mangas like The star of Cottonland or Aishite Night. The colours are light and fluffy, while the setting features plants and low-tech slice-of-life situations, such as drinking sake, writing letters, or even playing go, creating a stark contrast to the hi-tech space scenes of the 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam series. Further, the characters depicted are not the main characters. The only White Crew base member who appears here, is Sayla. I assume it's due to her being a relation of Char, one of the series' main antagonists, the kitty in the white helmet (obviously). Char is in every single postcard, likely due to his massive popularity. What turns these postcards towards a very specific focus, is the other character featured on each postcard: Garma Zabi. Without going into how massively popular the Char/Garma ship was back in the day, I'll just state the obvious: This was drawn for a female audience.
I grew curious. Who was the absolute queen that created this thing? Apparently, a lady called Ai Naniwa. Some digging revealed that not only did she create these postcards, she also created a whole darn manga about the Gundam kitties. It was called 'シャア猫の事' or 'Char's kitty topics' which was described as a re-telling of the 0079 series, from Kitty Char's perspective. Naturally, Garma seems to have featured heavily.
Tumblr media
Apologies for the bad quality of these images, they are cobbled together from google-fu.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Additional information, courtesy of @retroanimechris, posted in the comments after this article was first published: I actually acquired this manga and it was a supplement/special edition for OUT magazine. It's actually called "All About Char the Cat" シャア猫のこと 浪花愛 (月刊OUT11月増刊号 みのり書房 昭58). I am going to be scanning and translating the entire anthology very soon. She also worked with Charma doujin artist Shio Sato and the group NORMAL on several projects, of which I'll upload soon.

Oh hey, another Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance trailer. Knew I should’ve staggered talking about the Full Armour stuff.
Anyway, given that I’m fresh out of RX-78’s to talk about (at least until we get some more information on the RX-78 Gundam Ex), I’ll have to do something drastic - actually discussing the trailer itself.
Gotta say, it is nice that we can finally get a good look at the mobile suits themselves now that they’ve got models. Regular, non-special Zaku II’s look nice, I’ll be interested in seeing how the proportions stack up. Also, those Gouf Custom’s near the end? Gorgeous. Really hope we get a HG of those (though I’m personally hoping for some unique accessories). I really, really hope we see Doms in this since they’re going to look absolutely beautiful.
I briefly misread the “11 months into the war” bit at the start as just 1 month into the war, and I had to go back and double-check. If it’s 11 months in then that basically allows for all kinds of great tech in place, and it also means that Zeon’s fortunes are going to change very quickly. Depending on precisely when it’s set, it’s either just before or after the Battle of Odessa, which is usually said to be the big turnaround of the entire war, and the beginning of the end for Zeon on Earth.
Character designs look good, I keep seeing the main character (I think it’s Illiya or Elise or something) as Nimona though, but that’s probably just me. It’s really interesting how much like a game it looks, it reminds me a lot of Gundam Igloo, but time will tell if it’s got that series’ charm.
“It’s the Red Wolves! They took out three fleets at Loum!” - The Battle of Loum is one of those things in Gundam where absolutely none of the information we are given about it matches up, so maybe take this with a grain of salt. I should note that Loum is the fight which made Char famous, as he was able to take out five ships single-handedly. The Black Tri-Stars also achieved great fame with their capture of General Revil. There are numerous other noted Zeon aces who made their name at Loum (or during the Earth drop operation), so there’s no harm in the Red Wolves being another. However, three fleets feels a bit implausible.
EDIT: Apparently this is a translation flub, and the intended line was “they took out three ships at Loum”, which makes sense.
(It’s likely emblematic how early UC was typically rather “realistic” with its numbers - a tally of three ships would be very respectable for any ace, and the title of ace itself was awarded after five kills - it sounds low, but speaks to how deadly these fights really were. But as time passes, it’s not unusual to see these numbers exaggerated in fiction. The absolute top aces of the One Year War have just under 200 kills, which would be on par with real-life fighter aces from the Second World War, which gundam’s aces draw heavily from).
Lastly, based on the general tone of the trailer, I’ll assume it’ll be shooting for a grittier take on the one year war a lá Gundam Thunderbolt, so it’ll be interesting to see how that all goes.

Weekly Yuru-tetsu~ This one was a 'special edition,' and IIRC it was published on Valentines Day! Y: This time I would like to introduce you to Flauros. Y: This mobile suit was discovered by chance at the exploration site of the Mars Half Metal Mine. It was in sleep mode when we first discovered it. S: That's my gundam! The Ryusei-Go! Y: It was white when we found it, but when we refurbished it on Saisei, we went to the trouble of changing it to the color that Shino wanted. S: I paid for that out of my own pocket tho! It cost quite a bit!* Y: You need to study harder, Shino. Y: It is also equipped with a railgun that can fire special bullets. S: The Galaxy Cannon!! I didn't know how to use it, so I had Yamagi teach me! Y: You need to study harder, Shino. Y: ......Its most significant feature is transformation to shelling mode. By anchoring the fuselage to the ground it allows to improve stability during bombardment... S: I seriously didn't even know that! I was just using it out of the blue! Y: You need to study harder, Shino!
*This ties to the mini drama which was read on stage during the Last Flag fan event. I believe it was later recorded for the official CD drama release, but I'm not sure. The story is about Ride hoarding money to buy sweets for the younger kids, because Orga praised him for that. Shino complains that he's broke and if Ride has some extra he could lend him. Atra accuses Shino he must have spent all of his money on girls, to which Shino reacts with some hurt feelings that she would judge him like that when he's not even doing that often anymore, and that he's actually sent all of his money to Yamagi for the paint for his new gundam!

It's crazy to me how much (in my opinion) condensing Gundam 00 into two 100 minute movies improves what was, to my mind, a lesser season in comparison to the first. It cuts a lot of the dross and while Marina Ismail is still present and an important character, we don't check in on her repeatedly to see her wringing her hands over war constantly. It generally makes for a pacier experience while managing to keep the majority of pertinent plot points. Some are lost certainly, like Billy and Sumeragi living together before she returns to the Ptolemy, but generally it abridged well.
By comparison season 1 is slaughtered by being edited into a single 100 minute film. All nuance is lost, we don't have any attachment to supporting characters like Louise and Saji and don't see quite how callous Team Trinity are without the context leading up to the wedding crashing. We also spend far less time with the other three factions which means we don't get to see that there are heroes on all sides with each side having people who want to do go but the nature of the military industrial complex prevents them from doing so.
