Papai had once said beautiful people deserve beautiful things.  Mamãe had told her that beauty was beyond physical, and there were many things that made beautiful people.
Miss. Turner’s piano was beautiful. Júlia had never seen a piano before, not outside of cartoons at least, and the first time she laid her eyes upon the real deal she was convinced she would not be allowed to touch it. She cried when Miss. Turner picked her up and taught her how to play.
Miss Turner on the other hand was not beautiful. She was sometimes pretty, and sometimes kind, but rarely both and often neither.  Her classmates would disagree, but her classmates also frowned at her accent, and couldn’t say her name quite right. Her classmates also called her stupid when she would say the wrong sentence or mutter foreign curse words under their breath. Not that Miss Turner would call her stupid, she would just say “now in english” over and over, and say she understood it was hard, but all the other kids were reading more advanced books, and accuse her of cheating if she read the portuguese translations of them.
“Júlia is an excellent pianist.” She would tell her parents in a voice way too slow as if expecting them to not understand her otherwise. “And she is good at math. My fears lay in the fact she might want to work in other fields and … it would be the best if she didn’t.”
Now Tio Márcio was brave. If he was here Miss Turner would never ever be saying these things, he would have done something already. Tio Márcio was brave. Too brave to abandon the ship. “Love it or leave it.” They said. “What about neither?” He dared. Her parents weren’t brave. Their answer was both and they didn’t talk about Tio Márcio anymore, all they would say was that Júlia needed to try harder.
Tio Márcio was brave.
And so was Júlia.
Miss. Turner’s piano was beautiful. Even when kids would let their things up on it. She loved teaching the kids to play, seeing a side of them she often didn’t.
When Júlia played Miss Turned paid attention. Most people did. She would say she always paid attention to all her kids, but she was a liar, she never noticed the bullies, she never noticed when her students were in pain, she didn’t even notice a glass.
Vincent Jones was not a bad kid, he was also not a good kid, he was just a kid. The type that told mean jokes but also would help people get up after a fall. The type that takes things without thinking. And Júlia would never feel anything but sorrow over his fate.
It was not her fault though.
If Miss Turner had paid attention. If she had listened, if she hadn’t considered the boy's pain a silly excuse to miss class, he would be alive.
If he hadn’t drank a random cup full of poison. Who drinks from a random cup they found on a classroom piano?
Why was there a cup of poison on top of a piano?
Maybe a little girl had wanted to see her uncle once more or maybe she had wanted her uncle to meet her mean teacher and defend her. Maybe she had just not thought about what to do after getting the poison.
Or maybe a teacher got a little bit mad over her divorce, and killed a little boy because of it. A teacher got arrested and prosecuted. The justice system had never been known for it’s kindness.
Júlia liked the second one.
