The EMS-07 Elevado
Fueled by a burning hatred for the Earth Federation, Crux Dogatie of Jupiter-sphere began secretly reforming the colonies into the Jupiter Empire, declaring himself Supreme Leader.
To aid the goal of exacting revenge for the Federation's abandonment, and their callous offering of political marriage to gain influence in the region, the Jupiter Empire developed their own mobile suits, far removed from the conventions of MS design in Earth-sphere.
Among the most striking of these was the EMS-07 Elevado.
Tumblr media
With the mainstay mobile suit of the Jupiter Empire - the EMS-06 Batalla - serving as a base, the Elevado was developed as a high-performance alternative for use by ace pilots. It also saw extensive use by the personal guard of Supreme Leader Crux Dogatie.
Tumblr media
The Elevado featured a number of differences from its predecessor, intended to fit its high-performance role. Namely, the addition of more thrusters on the back, affording pilots finer control and the ability to pull off more complex maneuvers.
The most eye-catching feature of the Elevado however, was undeniably its head. The long, sleek design conjures images of Aliens from the ancient films of Earth's middle-historical period. While definitely an intimidating look, the elongated head did serve a practical design purpose. The Elevado featured an extensive sensor suite, allowing pilots to gather higher quantities of more reliable data at longer ranges.
The machine also featured a beam machine gun built-in to its claw arm, which itself was powerful enough to pierce the armor of some mobile suits. It was also capable of using standard MS armaments deployed by the Jupiter Empire.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Elevado's name can also be transliterated as Erebado. Some translated sources use that transliteration. I elected to use Elevado since it fits nicely with the Spanish theme set by the Batalla.
The EMS-07 Elevado was originally designed by Yuuichi Hasegawa for the 1994 manga Mobile Suit Crossbone Gundam.

Finally getting around to posting these!
Finished work on my Crossbone Gundam ver. ka, by far one of my most enjoyable builds to date. Had a lot of fun weathering this and coming up with a small narrative for the scene. I’ll try and go into detail of the weathering sometime here or you can probably piece it all together on my IG @ rokkupla

The real reason Crossbone has never been animated is because they (rightfully) fear that animating a single one of Tobia’s fights would make every Gundam pilot in the Universal Century bar Amuro himself look like a chump.

Gundam Crossbones is objectively one of the best Gundam series ever, because they gave Haro a space suit.

RGM-89 Jegan
State-of-the-art during its first rollout in U.C. 0089 , the RGM-89A Jegan saw the Federation break from tradition. Instead of being an in-house development like previous Federation mass-production units, the Jegan was both designed and supplied by Anaheim Electronics.
Tumblr media
Mainly intended to serve as a replacement for the rapidly aging RGM-86R GM III, the Jegan incorporated and improved upon many developments introduced with the RGM-88X Jeddah.
One of the most notable features of the Jegan is its head-mounted Vulcan pod. While previous mobile suits did have head-mounted Vulcan cannons, the RX-178 Gundam Mk-II popularized making these gunpods modular, rather than built in directly as they had been previously.
Tumblr media
The standard Jegan A-type would see many refits over its lifespan. Eventually, the A-type was replaced by the RGM-89D, which became the new standard pattern. The vast majority of the D-type's changes were internal and software based, in order to keep the Jegan relevant as mobile suit development advanced.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While the A and D types were by far the most common, the Jegan saw over a dozen variants developed for different purposes, mission profiles, or to serve as testbeds for new technologies.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Jegan became so ubiquitous during its service history that they could still be seen in service as long as 31 years after their deployment. When the Crossbone Vanguard attacked Frontier IV in U.C. 123, Jegan J-types were seen engaging the Vanguard's cutting-edge mobile suits.
Tumblr media
The Jegan was originally designed by artist Yutaka Izubuchi for the 1988 film Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack.

Alright, so general follow-up on Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX - new full Gundam series, the first few episodes are gonna be released as a theatrical movie in Japanese Cinemas around January 17th, the international release and rest of the series’ll presumably follow that.
Main character is Amate Yuzihara, also known at Matchu (that’s them in the top left of the promo image) (and also below), who’ll be piloting the gMS-Omega GQuuuuuuX, the titular mobile suit. (It’s the omega symbol, but I just don’t have the character to hand right now).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Honestly, I think it looks good. It’s an absolutely crammed production crew - a lot of Evangelion Alumni in there, with character design’s by Pokémon’s Take, and one of the composers is Yoshinasa Terui (who did the score for Jujitsu Kaisen).
The new Gundam GQuuuuuuX looks good. It took me a little while to warm to the design, I’ll admit. The clincher was seeing the new converge figure - the squat proportions and larger head give it an overall more traditionally Gundam-like look, which helped sell the regular design to me.
Tumblr media
My only real obsession thought is whether this is going to be set in Universal Century or be a brand-new AU:
The space colonies shown are the classic O’Neill cylinders, commonplace in UC (Off the top of my head I think it’s only After Colony that shares colonies like that with UC). Then again they are classic for a reason, and GQuuuuuuX seems to be pushing for an earlier stage of colonisation than Universal Century typically hosts.
The other black mobile suit shown off in the trailer seems to be obviously based on the Zaku II, but it’s unclear whether it’s an actual Zaku, or a Zaku-equivalent (akin to the Bornajorn or Jenice). The head screams Zaku to me, but the feet and lower body feel too different, implying it’s a Zaku-alike.
The supporting character Nyaan is noted to be a war refugee - it’s possible that they could be from one of the various wars in UC, or something unique to the setting.
I think the strongest argument for it being an AU is in the design of the Gundam GQuuuuuuX itself - it’s shown with shaped beam blades from a relatively small emitter (below) - that technology typically only shows up in very late UC (like Crossbone, F91 and Victory), but the way it’s presented here is so different that it feels like it must be an AU - it’s similar to the vibe of how funnel/bit/drone weaponry was commonplace in G-Witch, it feels like too unique of a signifier for it not to be an AU.
Tumblr media
Right, I’ve beat around the bush for quite enough: what do I think of the new Gundam?
I think it’s an odd mix, to be honest. The initial design didn’t strike me as looking particularly Gundam-like, I think the head’s just a little thin, it doesn’t have that typical squat samurai style to it. I do like how mobile it feels, but I expect that its upgrade will likely be armoured and closer to the traditional Gundam “mold” (unless of course hyper-light and hyper-mobile designs are going to be this series’ trademark style). Knowing that the primary mechanical designer is Ikuto Yamashita of Evangelion fame explains a lot though - one of the (many) things that Evangelion does well is that the Evangelions are incredibly fluid and mobile - they have very human-like expressions in their movement (which makes it all the more unsettling when we see them move differently, because we’re used to thinking of them as human-like), and the GQuuuuuuX seems to be designed to marry the fluid and humanlike movements of the Eva’s with Gundam’s more (for want of a better word) blocky style. The new Gundam looks like a concept aircraft, intended for performance testing, never mass-production - it’s lightweight, but it’s still a giant robot (again, like a concept airframe). I find myself liking the stripped-down angle as well - I’ve already compared it to the D Gundam First, which is an up-gunned mobile worker as opposed to a “true mobile suit”, but it also reminds me of a lot of the inner frame illustrations of units like the Gundam MKII, or the Prototype Zeta Gundam. I’m not sure about the V-fin though - it’s shown to cover the eyes, so I expect the gundam’ll have some sort of super mode or limiter where it unleashes it’s full potential. I feel like there’s good potential for symbology there, but I also don’t think it’s gonna go in that direction. I also really like the feet - this thing’s a space-specialist, no questions about it. I’m sure they remind me of another unit, I just can’t place it.
It also reminds me a heckuva lot of the Aerial. I don’t know if that’s recency bias or something else, though.
