By • Olalekan Fagbade Lawmakers summon Miyetti Allah leaders over attack, killings by suspected Fulani Herdsmen The leaders of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association have been summoned by Oyo State House of Assembly The lawmakers asked the leaders of the association to appear before it and explain roles played during the recent attack that took place in Iwajowa Local Government Area. They gave the order on Wednesday during a plenary presided over by Deputy Speaker, Hon. Muhammad Fadeyi. It was earlier reported that no fewer than four (4) people died as a result of a clash that occurred in Iwajowa Local Government Area. The lawmakers, while condemning the attack, called on the State Police command to beef up security in the area. The House also called for the arrest of the Fulani herdsmen who allegedly perpetrated the killings. These resolutions followed a matter of urgent public importance moved by the member representing Iwajowa State Constituency, Anthony Ogunsola. Ogunsola claimed that no fewer than seven (7) people have died as a result of the incident, while several people were wounded. He said, “Mr. Kege Mayowa, an Ohori farmer was murdered on his farmland at Apakolo village by yet-to-be-arrested Fulani herdsmen, after the late farmer challenged his killer when the herders were feeding cows on the farm. “After the killing, a team of joint security agents comprising Operation Burst, Police, Amotekun LG Vigilante, and members of Oodua Peoples’ Congress, OPC, were alerted and immediately mobilized to the scene. “But on sighting the team of security operatives, the herdsmen opened fire and this resulted in the death of Mr Ojo Yakubu (Amotekun operative), Mr Wasiu Salau a.k.a Federal, and Mr. Akeem Iroko. “The herdsmen also wounded another Amotekun officer, Mr Kazeem Hammed, Mr Muraina Jamie, a resident at Apakolo, while leaving many others receiving treatment at different undisclosed hospitals. The crisis escalated on Monday 16th and claimed three more lives in the Fulani community”. He noted that security agencies must put measures in place to forestall future attacks. He said, “Our people are mainly farmers and the Fulanis depend on their cattle for survival. It is completely unacceptable for the herders to be destroying our people’s farmlands. “We will not take this, hence we are appealing to the Oyo State Commissioner of Police to ensure the fleeing herdsmen who perpetrated the killings are not only arrested but also prosecuted.” #LawmakerssummonMiyettiAllahleadershipoverattackskillingsbysuspectedFulaniHerdsmen

Police deny role in Miyetti Allah’s security outfit formation
The Commissioner of Police, Nasarawa State, Shehu Umar Nadada, has denied the command’s involvement in the formation of a 1,144-man Fulani Nomad Vigilante team which was recently established in the state by the President of the Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, Abdullahi Bello Bodejo. CP Nadada disclosed this to Journalists on Tuesday during a courtesy visit by members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists at the state police command’s headquarters in Lafia. Bodejo had on January 17 inaugurated the team saddled with the responsibility of fighting against banditry, cattle rustling, and all forms of insecurity in the state. According to Nadada, the command was not officially notified about the formation of the Fulani Nomad Vigilante team, hence will not be liable for whatever challenges they encounter as a result of their actions. He said, “I am assuring you that the Nomad Vigilante as they call themselves are on their own. There was no formal report to the police concerning the issue. Nobody wrote to me or called me that he was coming here (command headquarters) for anything. “We have been working with some vigilante groups that are recognised by the government, but we will not work with any vigilante that is not recognised by the government” Residents in the state had alleged the involvement of the police in the formation of the nomad vigilante group as officers of the command were seen providing security for them during the inauguration ceremony. But reacting to the allegation, CP Nadada said the police command provided security at the venue of the inauguration ceremony for the 1,144-man nomad vigilante members in order to avert the breakdown of law and order at the event. “Nobody informed the command in written form or verbally about the vigilante group, but ordinarily, if there is any gathering like that, we cannot allow people to gather without providing security for them so that hoodlums will not go and hijack the gathering,” he said. Earlier, the Chairman of the NUJ, Nasarawa State Council, Salihu Alkali, while congratulating the CP for his recent posting to the state, pledged to give the police command the needed cooperation to ensure the success of their programmes.
