17 COMMON SEWING MACHINE PROBLEMS AND HOW TO SOLVE THEM
There's not anything worse than working with an uncooperative stitching device! Broken or tangled threads, skipped stitches, snapped needles—it could make for a totally irritating experience. But most of those troubles can be resolved with out taking your device in for highly-priced maintenance. We've assembled a list of a number of the maximum not unusual stitching gadget problems, and their answers, to help you troubleshoot even at the same time as mid-challenge! 1. Thread bunching up under your material when stitching If you are seeing knots of more thread on the underside of your stitching, there are several possibly culprits. First, dispose of your stitching from the gadget. You may also should reduce thru all of the greater thread to get it unfastened. Don't truely pull it loose, or you danger adverse the mechanism of your machine, not to say your material! Once your mission has been freed, cautiously get rid of all the reduce bits of thread as nicely. Now you are geared up to perceive the problem. Keep a scrap piece of your cloth handy to check solutions as you attempt them. Remove your top thread and re-thread the system, being careful to follow the threading schematic provided for your machine's manual. Make sure your presser foot is up even as threading—many machines lock the tension disks whilst the presser foot is down, making it impossible to string the device thru the disks successfully. Remove and re-thread your bobbin. Some machines are specific about which way the bobbin unwinds. Consult your manual to make certain it's inserted efficiently. Make sure you are using the same kind of thread in each pinnacle thread and bobbin. A distinction in thread weight commonly reasons machines to attract threads at different quotes, leading to tangles and knots. Adjust your tension settings. This is a commonplace issue, specially in case you cross from working with a heavy material to a delicate one (or vice versa) with out remembering to modify your settings. Test your anxiety settings on a scrap of your mission's cloth to ensure the whole lot is correct. 2. Bent or damaged needles This is a problematic issue that may be risky as well as worrying. Always use a brand new needle for a new assignment. This prevents needles from getting dull or hooked at the tip, that can damage your material. Make positive you're using the proper type of needle for the assignment at hand— knit fabric do excellent with a ballpoint, or jersey needle, at the same time as leather-based, vinyl, or denim will want sharp, strong needles. If your needle breaks or bends, stop sewing without delay. Carefully eliminate the broken needle and positioned it in a container to be disposed of nicely. Replace the needle with the appropriate kind for your undertaking, being sure to put in it in step with your sewing device's guide. Re-thread, and maintain your task. If you're the usage of the right needle, however you still have problems with breaking or bending, you can have underlying mechanical troubles with the timing mechanism, so as to require expert repair. 3. Fabric now not feeding Make sure if your system has a drop-feed placing that it has not been activated, and which you don't have an embroidery or darning plate masking the feed puppies. You'll additionally want to make sure that your presser foot is down, and is ready to the right pressure on your cloth—too little or an excessive amount of strain results in a bad feed. When starting a seam, ensure the fabric is all the manner under the needle earlier than reducing your presser foot. 4. Thread continues breaking Check the kind of thread that you're using. Delicate threads designed for hand sewing aren't appropriate to be used in a sewing gadget. Your pinnacle and backside threads should additionally be of the identical weight. Re-thread your top thread, ensuring your presser foot is up while threading. If you are nonetheless having issues, lower the tension settings in your pinnacle thread. 5. Machine is skipping stitches There are numerous possible reasons for your gadget to pass stitches. First, check that your needle is hooked up efficiently, not bent or in any other case broken, and which you're the usage of the proper sort of needle to your undertaking. If the top thread is not achieving the bobbin, the threads will no longer lock properly, ensuing in a skipped sew. Re-thread your system, both pinnacle and bobbin threads, and check. If your gadget continues to be skipping stitches, there may be an trouble with the timing, with a view to require expert repairs. 6. Bobbin anxiety now not steady If you discover your self continuously adjusting the anxiety of your bobbin thread, test the bobbin itself. Plastic bobbins specifically can wear, inflicting them to grow loose in the bobbin housing and making it hard to hold the ideal anxiety. Try switching to a brand new metallic bobbin and see if that resolves the issue. 7. Seams in stretch fabrics coming out wavy This one can be a sewing system trouble, but it could also be a hassle together with your approach. First, modify the manner you are sewing. Make sure the entirety of your task is supported even as you're sewing. The weight of the material by myself can be sufficient to purpose knits or other stretch fabric to stretch whilst you're stitching, so don't permit your material drape off the table at the same time as you work. Let the feed puppies do all of the work, and avoid pulling at the fabric to straighten it as you sew. Pin well earlier than you start! If you are nevertheless seeing problems, adjust the stress of your presser foot, or higher yet, switch to a on foot foot, which will feed the top and bottom layers of your fabric under the needle at the identical fee, averting that distortion. Eight. Sewing device seizes up or won't stitch It's no longer uncommon to want to present your gadget a chunk of assist by way of turning the handwheel, specially while you're just getting a seam started out. However, if you want to pressure the wheel to turn, or the machine does not pick up after a bit of assistance, forestall what you're doing! Likely, your fabric is simply too tough for your gadget to stitch, and continuing to attempt will harm your machine. If you're now not operating with a specifically difficult fabric, ensure that your needle is installed successfully and is the right kind. Remove it to test that it is not bent. If you are nonetheless having problems together with your device now not stitching, test your manual for cleaning and maintenance tips. A build-up of fuzz and lint could make it hard in your system's mechanisms to work efficiently. 9. Needle comes unthreaded earlier than sewing How demanding! You simply spent ages getting that thread thru the attention of the needle, and as soon as you visit start stitching, it unthreads itself. Luckily, there is an easy fix for this one. Before threading your device, simply ensure that the needle is at its highest factor. You can do that by means of winding the handwheel towards yourself (constantly wind it in the direction of your self because this advances the system—winding it backward can motive threads to tangle) even as watching the needle. Some machines additionally have an "up/down" function that permits you to raise or decrease the needle routinely to its highest or lowest factor. 10. Fabric or threads are bunching on the start or ends of seams Your seams should lay flawlessly flat from one give up to the alternative, but it is no longer unusual to look bunching or tangled threads on the ends. This is due to backstitching (or returned-tacking) over the ends of the fabric, which changes the tensions your stitching machine reports and causes tangles. Avoid this by using stitching an extra few millimetres into your material earlier than backstitching on the begin of seams, in order that the backstitches are all made thru material and not over the threshold. Similarly, when finishing a seam, backstitch earlier than you hit the brink, after which sew instantly off the threshold for a nice smooth end. 11. Thread unevenly knots, loosens, or tangles This can be an infuriating hassle to tune down. One minute, the whole thing's stitching alongside just first-class, and the next, your gadget has tangled, skipped stitches, or knotted up the threads. If the issue is inconsistent, the trouble isn't always in all likelihood to be your threading or anxiety settings. Instead, the difficulty is probably fluff! That's proper, the tiny bits of lint and dirt that building up interior your sewing device, in particular in and around the bobbin case, can purpose no cease of difficulties in the event that they emerge as inside the incorrect place at the wrong time. Avoid the problem by using often cleansing your device in keeping with the commands for your manual. Many stitching machine manufacturers endorse using brushes or vacuum attachments to put off lint; even as using cans of compressed air may additionally appear to be a terrific concept, they frequently will be predisposed to drive tiny bits of lint in addition into the mechanism, where they could continue to wreak havoc. It's satisfactory to observe the producer's instructions! 12. Thread fraying, shredding, and breaking If your thread appears as though it's been thru the mill, it's possibly an difficulty along with your needle. Make certain that your thread and needle sizes are compatible—your needle desires to be big sufficient for the thread you are the usage of to bypass via the attention without catching or pulling. If your needle and thread are incompatible, there's a very good risk one or the alternative isn't always right on your task anyway, so begin through ensuring you have the proper gear in your substances. Thirteen. Fabric feed is inconsistent Even seams are the mark of an awesome sewist, but it could be extraordinarily hard to manage if your machine is not drawing the cloth calmly. There are numerous viable motives for uneven feed, and the wrongdoer, no longer fairly, is commonly the feed dogs. If your gadget is older, it's possible the feed puppies may have worn down enough that they are not catching the material flippantly. They can normally be replaced, and your machine may be walking proper as new very quickly. If your machine is new, try cleansing across the feed puppies. Lint has a tendency to accumulate on this area, especially in case your system has a drop-feed feature. If neither of those seems to be the issue, strive increasing the stress of your presser foot to make certain your material continues even contact with the feed puppies. 14. Machine is making atypical noises Step one: prevent stitching! As soon as you hear sudden thumps or clunks coming from your gadget, take your foot off the pedal. It's in all likelihood that your gadget just wishes an amazing cleaning, so take a look at through your guide for the encouraged protection technique. Clean and oil your device in line with the commands, and then give it test on a piece of scrap fabric. If there are nonetheless uncommon noises, it's great to take it to a restore shop to have it tuned up. 15. The system is running, but the needle won't move! Though first of all difficult, this problem has a easy answer. Your gadget is probable set in bobbin-winding mode, so test that the lever or winding publish in your bobbin is in the correct function. Sixteen. Decorative sew settings aren't operating If your system has a variety of decorative stitch settings, however they don't seem to be operating, step one is to test your stitch length and width settings. Many ornamental stitches require precise settings so one can appear nicely. Double take a look at your guide to make sure that you're the usage of the right period and width for the sew you're trying to create. 17. Seams are puckered and distorted While a bit of unevenness in a seam may be handled with the aid of pressing, puckered and distorted seams may truly be a problem with your device. First, check the weight of the thread you are the use of. A thick, stiff thread will motive distortion in lightweight fabric, and also will throw off your tension settings. Tension is the second factor to check, if your thread is satisfactorily lightweight for the assignment. Another opportunity is uneven feed. If your presser foot pressure is correct, and your feed puppies are running properly, strive switching to a walking foot, that can help even out the feed for slippery or heavyweight fabric. As irritating as it may be to have your sewing gadget level a rebellion, the answer is probable quite easy. A bit of normal preservation can help prevent the worst problems, and your guide is an invaluable useful resource. Behemoth Timeline!
You guys, some of the things y’all were saying in the tags of my last post were seriously so nice. I am glad you found it interesting. It made me really happy.
So here we go again :)
Monday, August 10
The book starts off on this day with Deryn and Alek fencing on the spine. Then the Goeben and the Breslau attack. Hirst shoots Alek. Newkirk’s Huxley catches on fire and Deryn saves him. (Chapters 1-4)
Tuesday, August 11
The next day Deryn and Dr. Barlow visit Alek in his stateroom. Deryn worries about Alek being accused of mutiny. Then she delivers a message to Count Volger for Alek. (5-6)
Wednesday, August 12
Alek gets back to working on the engines. He and Volger are called to the bridge where the captain informs them that Britain and Austria-Hungary are now officially at war. (7)
Thursday, August 13
At just after 3am, Alek sneaks off from egg duty to look for a way for him and his men to escape the ship. Deryn follows him and ends up telling him about her father’s death.
Later they arrive in Istanbul. Deryn, Newkirk, and Dr. Barlow take a ride on the Dauntless and we meet Eddie Malone for the first time. The Dauntless is attacked and Deryn does cool stuff™ with spices. (8-12)
Friday, August 14
It’s Bovril’s birthday!!!!!
So in the middle of the night Bovril hatches and Alek, Baur, and Klopp escape. Volger and Hoffman stay behind.
The next morning Deryn brings Volger breakfast. They drink tea together and talk about Alek. Volger offers to give Deryn fencing lessons. Deryn and Dr. Barlow ride the Stamboul and meet the Kizlar Agha. They go to the sultan and present one of the loris eggs, which gets crushed. Then Dr. Barlow offers the Leviathan as a gift. (13-18)
(so I mentioned in my other post that some things didn’t add up. this is where that happens but this is my best guess. i’ll explain it a bit at the end.)
Sunday, August 16
We first see Alek in the hotel. He and Bauer go out to the Grand Bazaar where we learn a bit more about the relationship between the Germans and the Ottoman Empire. They run into Eddie Malone and talk for a while before they have to leave when German soldiers come looking for them. Alek agrees to meet with Malone again the next day. During their escape, Alek meets Zaven. (19-21)
Monday, August 17
Eddie Malone and Alek had lunch together (not shown, only mentioned). Deryn is awarded the Air Gallantry Cross and is given a mission. She runs into Eddie Malone and takes him to Count Volger to deliver the message from Alek. Alek wants Volger to join them, and Volger tells Deryn that he needs her help, revealing that he knows her secret and threatening to blackmail her. Later she begins her mission with a keelhaul drop. (22-24)
Tuesday, August 18
The mission goes on overnight, eventually carrying into the next day. Deryn puts the vitriolic barnacles onto the kraken nets and loses all of her men. She decides to head back to Istanbul to find Alek.
Alek meets with Malone again and hears a bit of what Volger and Deryn said the day before. He is trailed by Lilit on his way to meet with Zaven. They meet with Nene and Alek tries piloting the Şahmeran. Meanwhile, Deryn spent the day hiding on a cargo ship. She swims to shore and, hiding from Germans, sneaks onto the Orient Express. She jumps off somewhere and sleeps in an alley. (24-28)
Wednesday, August 19
Deryn goes to a library to find out Alek’s mother’s name. She then uses this information to find the Hotel Hagia Sophia. She reunites with Alek and meets Lilit and Bovril for the first time. (29-30)
Thursday, August 20
The squad leaves the hotel. The taxi situation goes down. Deryn meets Zaven and Nene. They concoct a plan to use spice bombs on the night of the revolution. Alek realizes that they will not be able to stay in the hotel any longer after the taxi incident, but he left the scroll in the hotel room. He asks Deryn to go back with him in a week to find it. (31-33)
Thursday, August 27
Alek, Deryn, and Lilit return to the hotel to retrieve the scroll. While Alek and Deryn are alone in the room, they discuss the fact that Lilit is into “Dylan.” Alek tells Deryn about the contents of the scroll and him possibly becoming the emperor. Deryn almost tells Alek her secret (again, smh) but tells him about her mission instead. They run into Eddie Malone yet again. Alek convinces him to delay any publishings about the revolution in exchange for interviews about himself. We also learn about the Tesla cannon being built. Lilit figures out what Deryn’s mission was all about and they plan to tear down the cannon. (34-36)
Saturday, September 19
The night of the revolution. They all go out in walkers to take down the Tesla cannon. Zaven sacrifices himself. We see the Behemoth in action. We bid farewell to Lilit. She kisses Deryn and flies off in her body kite. Deryn convinces Alek to come back aboard the Leviathan with his men. Once they are back on board we meet the other loris and learn that the Kizlar Agha kidnapped the sultan. (37-42)
Sunday, September 20
The next morning Alek and Volger have a chat. We learn that the Leviathan is headed towards Asia. The book ends with Alek learning that the pope has died and basically questioning everything around him. (43)
So as for the things that don’t quite add up, there are a couple of quotes that are incorrect if we assume that these dates are correct.
In chapter 24, on the night of Deryn’s mission, we get this: “Deryn realized that this was her second lost night of sleep in three days.”
The only lost night of sleep that we are aware of is when Alek and his men escape. This happened four nights prior to Deryn’s mission in the timeline that I have made.
So it’s obviously impossible to read anything that I have written on here in this picture. But here’s a visual of what I’m saying.
The blue line is the night of the mission. So the quote implies that the purple line is a night in which she does get sleep, and the pink line is another night in which she doesn’t. The yellow line is the night that I have Alek escaping.
I can’t find a way around this and there is no reason that Deryn wouldn’t have slept on the night of the 15th. In fact, I don’t have anything marked as happening on the 15th, which is kind of weird to me. I’ll get to that in a minute.
The second quote is in chapter 30 when Deryn says that Alek has been in Istanbul “only three barking days!”
This happens in my timeline on August 19th. But Alek leaves the Leviathan on the night of the 13th. So he has been in Istanbul for longer than that.
So both of these issues are similar in that they have to do with some extra days being spliced in there. And like I said before, I have nothing on the 15th. There’s a weird gap. With these three factors, it seems like I’m making a mistake somewhere, which I might be. But I keep trying and I cannot figure it out. Basically, the events of the 10th are confirmed to have occurred on that date, and the events on the 18th are confirmed as well. Closing the gap would shift everything and inevitably mess up one of those dates. I don’t see a way around it.
I tried real hard you guys. I even got my dad to look at it. But it’s all good. It was still fun. Hopefully you enjoyed it xoxo

By now, comparing someone to the underwear gnomes of South Park fame is trite. Were it not for Donald Trump, I wouldn’t go near it. But I cannot resist because it’s a salient feature of his way of “thinking” — although posing would be the better word here.
Behold: “If Israeli and the Palestinians can make peace, it will begin a process of peace all throughout the Middle East,” he said, adding, with his characteristic precision, that “would be an amazing accomplishment.”
How is that not the gnomes’ business plan to make a killing in the underwear market?
1. Collect underpants
2. ?
3. Profit
Here’s Trump’s version:
1. Solve the Palestine-Israel conflict
2. ?
3. Peace breaks out in the rest of the Middle East
In one respect, Trump’s plan differs from the gnomes’. It implies more question marks.
The first is “if Israeli [sic] and the Palestinians can make peace.” Trump seems to think the differences between the Israelis and Palestinians are like the differences between two parties in a business negotiation. To strike a bargain they just need to find a middle ground that contains enough of what each party wants. The Palestinian-Israeli conflict rather different. It’s a confrontation between landowners and those who seized and continue to occupy that land.
What does the Art of the Deal have to say about that? (The question is directed to Tony Schwartz, of course, not Donald Trump.)
That’s no exaggeration. As David Ben-Gurion, the Zionist leader who became Israel’s first prime minister, asked, “Why should the Arabs make peace? If I was an Arab leader I would never make terms with Israel. That is natural: …We have come here and stolen their country. Why should they accept that?” (quoted in The Jewish Paradox: A Personal Memoir, by Nahum Goldmann, founder of the World Zionist Congress.)
Most Palestinians and their putative leaders seem willing to forget 1948, when some 750,000 Palestinians were driven from their homes and others massacred, while hundreds of their villages were wiped off the map (the “Nakba,” or disaster) and those who remained were subjected to military rule for almost 20 years, after which they became third-class citizens under civilian rule. The dominant view of Palestinians (including Hamas) today favors a country of their own in the territories conquered and occupied in the 1967 war. That’s also been acceptable to the Arab governments since the late 1980s; Iran, too, accepts this resolution. The problem is that most Israelis don’t want to give up the West Bank, which they regard as integral to the Land of Israel. The Israeli government has been building Jewish-only towns there and in annexed East Jerusalem for years, which is illegal under international law. Israelis, by and large, don’t want the Palestinians to have their own country, but if they were to get one under the present circumstances, it would be in effect an archipelago of Palestinian towns cut off from one another by Jewish-only settlements and roads and controlled by the Israeli government. Some country that would be. The situation in the Gaza Strip would be even more bizarre since it would be a prison-like enclave with its borders, coast, and external relations totally under the thumb of the Israeli government.
So what would a negotiated settlement look like, considering that the magnanimity of the Palestinians would not be reciprocated? Israel insists that the negotiations have no preconditions, not even the condition that Israel stops building towns on the very land that is to be the subject of the negotiations. Remarkably, the Palestinian leadership reportedly has now agreed not to insist on the cessation of settlement building during the talks. How many concessions must the Palestinians make before talks even begin? (For those who think the United Nations partitioned Palestine into Jewish and Arab countries, see Jeremy R. Hammond’s “The Myth of the U.N. Creation of Israel.”)
Things are further complicated by Israel’s having moved the goalpost. It once demanded recognition of the state of Israel. But once that was obtained, the government of Benjamin Netanyahu added a new demand: recognition of Israel as the state of the Jewish people — not of the Jewish, Muslim, Christian, and secular inhabitants of Israel, mind you, but of all Jews, no matter where they now live. (Until recently, Reform Jews believed that Jews constitute a worldwide religious community, not an ethnic or national group, and hence opposed the idea of a Jewish state. Some Reform and orthodox Jews still believe this.) This designation would jeopardize the already precarious status of Israel’s Palestinian Arab population.
But let’s move on. What then? It’s hard to believe that Trump and his “advisers” actually think that a Palestine-Israel settlement would bring peace to the rest of the Middle East. How could he? The antagonism of Saudi Arabia and the other Sunni-ruled Gulf States directed at Shia Iran has nothing to do with the Palestinians. That antagonism is about Muslim sectarianism and power politics.
It’s hard to believe that Trump and his “advisers” actually believe that a Palestine-Israel settlement would bring peace to the Middle East. How could they? The hostility of Saudi Arabia and the other Sunni-ruled Gulf States toward Shia Iran has nothing whatever to do with the Palestinians. That hostility is motivated by Muslim sectarianism and sheer power politics. The genocidal war that Saudi Arabia and its coalition are waging against the people of Yemen — made possible by the U.S. government — is aimed at Iran, although the Shia Houthis are not Iranian proxies. So is the war against Bashar al-Assad in Syria. That’s why the Saudis have always had sympathy — and lots of money — for al-Qaeda and the breakaway faction that became the Islamic State. Israel’s rulers, who are now openly aligned with the barbaric Gulf states, also find Iran to be a convenient demon and the violent Sunni Islamists more to their liking.
Trump’s shameful kowtowing toward the Saudis cannot be squared with what he says about “radical Islam, or what he now calls Islamism. (Has Mr. Politically Incorrect been coopted by political correctness?) Iran opposes the Islamic State and al-Qaeda (which murder Shiites); it’s fighting them both in Iraq and Syria. Yet smarmy Trump went to Saudi Arabia, the incubator and proselytizer of radical Islamism (Wahhabism), rather than to Iran — which, for all its theocratic faults, just reelected a president who looks like a classical liberal next to the head-chopping and misogynists in Saudi Arabia. (We shouldn’t ignore the coming arms sales to Saudi Arabia, which Trump, good military Keynesian that he is, can use to tout his plan to create jobs.)
Looking for logic in Trump is like looking for square circles, so no one should be surprised by his destructive policy. Trump wants to look like a conciliator — maybe he envies Barack Obama for his Nobel Peace Prize — but in fact he backs the worst destabilizers in the Middle East.
