Hey, guess who noticed Mini Brands were on sale today!
Tumblr media
Got a Disney Store one this time. Let’s just crack this open…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Where to start…?
Tumblr media
Oh, it’s a little Bo Peep! Cute. The top of the box is popped open a bit, though. Something to fix later.
Tumblr media
Oh! Another doll! Belle this time and her box is actually in good shape. Will we get another doll…?
Tumblr media
Nope! A Minnie Mouse bento box! Hey, something to carry all those chicken wings from last time!
Tumblr media
Whoa, lots of pieces. Another play set thingie! No clue if this is a common thing or if I’ve just got good RNG karma from the “three cardboard boxes” pull. Anyway, let’s pop this together and…
Tumblr media
…it’s a display stand! Neat! The dolls don’t fit on it terribly well, but it’s still nifty. Maybe the last one will fit better…
Tumblr media
…lol, nope. Hawkeye’s bow. I admittedly spaced that Marvel stuff was an option in these. Very cool, but not a great fit on the stand, unless I put it on its side.
Tumblr media
Overall super happy with this pull, but, looking at the checklist, I think there are just simply fewer dud options overall.

Hey adventures! I am so excited to announce two upcoming TTRPGs: Fathomfarer and Skellies! Oh, and before I bury the lede: You can read and playtest these systems *right now* at saddleb.ag/ttrpgs, or check my highlighted story! In brief, Fathomfarer (FF) is a TTRPG for players and GMs that want to try something other than Fifth Edition, but don’t want to learn an even more advanced set of rules or throw rules out altogether. Fathomfarer aims to keep a similar level of mechanical nuance while removing wasted rolls, turns, and levels. It also sets out to rebuild the missing pillars in Fifth Edition, making Exploration and Social Encounters as interesting and satisfying to take part in as Combat. Players can determine their own successes and failures, work together to overcome group challenges, and always feel like they’re making an impact based on their contributions. If you like Fifth Edition but don’t want to forget everything you’ve ever learned to go adventuring again, Fathomfarer may be a fun and quick alternative to try! Skellies, on the other hand, is a rules-lite approach with a focus on hijinks and a Scooby Doo level of seriousness. In it, you play a reanimated skeleton, or skelly, whose greatest purpose in life—err, undeath—is to impress and serve the lich that raised it. Skellies is designed to be a pick-up-and-play game for sessions where you’re down a player, or just as an in-between break for intense moments in your main game’s storyline. Of course, you can absolutely play a longer form campaign of Skellies just as easily! Your skelly will collect treasures from invading adventurers to pay tribute to your lich, who will in turn grant you additional bones to fortify yourself with, or coveted dark blessings to alter your very being! Rolls are simple (using entirely d6s), with very minimal things to track. Relax and have fun: you’re already dead! I hope you decide to check out these ongoing projects of mine, and try them for yourself, at saddleb.ag/ttrpgs! Keep on adventuring! -g ___ ✨ Patrons get huge perks! Access this and hundreds of other item cards, art files, and compendium entries when you support The Griffon's Saddlebag on Patreon for less than $10 a month!

Ok- so I've mentioned it twice now lol about
"Bad Reset, Best Outcome"
But what is it?
Bad reset, Best outcome is my AU Skellies X Y/N story :] But I decided to put a little spin on it-
So Y/N and Skelly are dating- happy as can be, over coming skellies past, all the good stuff and fluff. :]
Unfortunately this doesn't last long- after they've been together for some years now, in cute couple fashion they fall asleep snuggled up together- and then there is a reset.
Skeleton wakes up back in their room underground, with vague (how vague depends on if they remember resets or not) recollection of someone important to them.
Y/N wakes up right outside the ruins door in Snowdin laying in the snow lol. Y/N remembers everything (as a human), and doesn't know where they are, just that they miss their skelly :'[
Then story follows and based on the AU they'll find skelly in different ways. Then you follow the adventures of Skelly and Y/N trying to survive in the underground! This is easy or hard depending on the AU

The actual story
Okay so I realize that the first "story" post didn't tell you guys a lot about what our game is about
Let's change that shall we?
SPOILER UNDER HERE!!
Okay, so the game starts with a scene in a forest and a background voice talking about being lonely and doesn't remember much about their life.
The scene cuts short when an alarm clock starts to sound in the background waking you up.
In the first playthrough, you control a young teen called Matias.
Matias goes around their daily life, helping their mom and taking a stroll around town.
After that, Matias and the player decide to go to the forest to think and maybe find some cool mushrooms.
After maybe getting a little too deep in the forest, you start to hear a voice coming from the ground.
When you look down, you see a human skull… well, most of it. And the skull is talking to you.
Before the skull can actually explain why and how it is talking, Matias gets scared about it, kicks it out of panic, and runs away to their house.
The next day, still haunted by the image of a human-talking-skull, Matias decides to go back to the forest to convince themselves that it was some sort of dream or maybe some weird hallucination.
Spoiler! It was not.
After his better judgment, Matias decides to hear the skull out and ends up giving him the nickname of Skelly (there is an option for the player to give the skull a name but is still in development, there is a certain undertale reference if you name the skull sans or papyrus).
Skelly ends up telling Matias that some of his parts (part of the skull and jaw) are missing but that he still can feel them around town.
Skelly ends up asking Matias for help to recover his missing pieces.
And Matias says no.
After some more convincing from the player and Skelly, Matias ends up saying yes and decides to help Skelly out.
After finding a good chunk of his parts scattered around town, Skelly starts to remember some of his life when he was alive and ends up going to the realization that he was probably killed, but he doesn't remember if it was by accident or intentionally.
After finding his jaw, Skelly remembers his age and real name… but with this information, you piece together that Skelly was a kid that disappeared when most of the adult NPC were young, and that means that one of the people you know in your life was the murderer that killed Skelly.
Now with this information, you have to try to find out who the killer is, but before you can start your new quest… Your game crashed and closed.
If you restart the game, you play from the beginning not as Matias but as Isabell!
Relive the same story but as a different protagonist, but remember, you are not Matias anymore.
The people around town will act differently around you because "You" are a different person.
Some NPCs that helped you as Matias could be your enemies as Isabell and vice versa.
While Skelly is sitting in the forest, confused about what happened and why he doesn't remember his name anymore… but he does remember Matias and their little adventure and is very confused about why there is somebody that is certainly NOT Matias picking him up from the ground.
The player has to work with Skelly and Isabell/Matias to solve the mystery again and try to figure out why the world started again.
All of this while interacting with unique NPCs and finding a bunch of references to games we love around town and the forest!
If you wish to help us make our game real, please consider buying us a kofi!
When we get a demo for the game, we plan to release a Kickstarter to make a full game.
Please join us on this adventure!

I managed to exceed my goal again and read 27 books this year!
This is kind of like a diary post, but if you’re curious what I liked and disliked there’s a lot more detail below the Read More.
The books are also in list form at the bottom.
Book count
3 of these books were started in 2022, so 24 were started and completed entirely within 2023. My goal was 16, so I’m still quite happy with this. The only re-read for me this year was Frankenstein, which I read in high school, so 26 books were new to me.
I completed 25 traditional books and 2 graphic novels – My Pretty Vampire by Katie Skelly and the Azumanga Daioh complete omnibus by Kiyohiko Azuma. I decided to just include these in the overall book count, especially because of how long the Azumanga Daioh omnibus is. That should maybe even count as several books! I loved Azumanga Daioh (now I want to re-watch the anime), and I thought My Pretty Vampire was just okay.
Genres and moods
Tumblr media
I was surprised to see how many classics I read this year (9, according to StoryGraph). Though I think StoryGraph is questionable with its categorizations of some books (is The Summer Book really a classic?), even ignoring those, I still think this amount is higher than normal for me. I didn’t intend to read this many classics, it mostly just happened on accident, so I don’t expect there will be as many next year. Many of these were actually read with my partner while washing dishes (we read to each other, alternating each night who reads and who washes). –Side note: I can’t recommend this strategy enough if you have someone you can do it with. You’ll read so much more! We completed 5 books (and about ¼ of another) using this strategy, several of which were pretty long.– Frankenstein, Dracula, and Moby Dick, for example, are all classics which were read while washing dishes, and all three were some of my most enjoyable reading experiences this year. Even though I didn’t particularly like Frankenstein, the process of reading it with someone else and commenting on, riffing on, and sharing our thoughts on it with each other made it really fun. Other notable classics I read include The Glass Menagerie and The Picture of Dorian Gray.
Tied for my most-read genre is science fiction, also with 9 books. This isn’t a surprise because it’s my favorite genre and was by far my most-read genre last year. Most of my favorite books this year were sci-fi (more on those later), but there were also some misses, including Terraform: Watch/Worlds/Burn (which had a cool premise that unfortunately fell short, and very inconsistent quality between its short stories) and Roadside Picnic (classic sci-fi fans, don’t come for me, but I kind of hated this).
Last year 30% of the books I read were non-fiction, but this year I only read 11% non-fiction. Both of these values are unintentional. Last year I said I’d like to keep up my pace with non-fiction, but I didn’t make an effort to and didn’t actively think about this while choosing books to read this year. However, now that I’m at the end of 2023 I sort of wish I had read more non-fiction. It’ll be one of my goals for 2024.
Tumblr media
StoryGraph’s mood categorizations are kind of odd, and I never really know what to do with this information, but compared to last year I apparently read many more “dark” books and a lot fewer “informative” books (obviously just code for “non-fiction”). “Reflective”, “adventurous”, and “challenging” show up a lot again this year.
Favorites
I rated three books 5 stars this year: Parable of the Sower, Howl’s Moving Castle, and Frida: The Biography of Frida Kahlo. My favorite books this year (I think of this differently than 5-star books) were (in order of completion): The Left Hand of Darkness, Parable of the Sower, Binti: The Complete Trilogy, Frida: The Biography of Frida Kahlo, Moby Dick, and The Devourers. Thoughts on each below:
Parable of the Sower is my first Octavia E. Butler book and it exceeded my high expectations. It’s incredibly dark (please check trigger warnings if you want to read it) and yet it’s somehow incredibly hopeful. I think this book is a really great example of what cli-fi should be. Climate change is effective as part of the setting rather as the main focus of the plot (I’m wary to read some other cli-fi books that I think could be too heavy handed, like Kim Stanley Robinson’s Ministry for the Future – being in this field myself, I think I’m more picky about these things). I appreciate that Butler focuses just as much on issues like social inequality, corporate greed, and labor. These are all interconnected, and connected to climate change as well, and I feel like I haven’t seen anyone else so effectively weave together all of these issues in a novel. It’s feels incredibly real, which makes it all the more chilling. I can’t wait to read the sequel and find out where Earthseed and Acorn evolve from here, and I’m honestly heartbroken that this series was never completed. I’m ready to read everything Butler has ever written though.
The Left Hand of Darkness is my first by Ursula K. Le Guin, and just like with Butler, I’m ready to read her entire bibliography! Remarkably forward-thinking for its time in how it views gender, it’s slightly less groundbreaking now (sometimes a little outdated even), but for 1969 this is revolutionary – just pretend the Gethenians use they/them pronouns. I’m also obsessed with the way this was written like an anthropological text; perhaps not surprising given who Le Guin’s parents were. The worldbuilding is so interesting (almost as good as Dune), and I can’t wait to read more of the Hainish cycle books.
I knew I would like Binti: The Complete Trilogy by Nnedi Okorafor, which I picked up after enjoying Noor so much last year. Like with the previous two authors mentioned, I’m planning to read everything by Okorafor. This one reads a little more YA-like than Noor, but I think the themes are a little more mature than YA books typically tackle. Binti really adeptly grapples with themes of trauma and grief, and I really enjoyed seeing how this played out, especially between the characters of Binti and Okwu. Okorafor is another master worldbuilder, and I can’t get enough of her extremely vivid settings, which feel as alive as the characters. I’m excited to read more books by Okorafor featuring strong yet flawed female protagonists.
The Devourers by Indra Das is a book I went into completely blind. I can’t even remember where I heard about this one. But I’m so glad I picked it up. Definitely not for anyone squeamish – there’s a lot of, uh… bodily fluids (among other things, including cannibalism and assault – definitely check trigger warnings before reading). I think the author might have a thing for piss. But all that aside, this book was amazing. It felt like a historical epic, carrying a single storyline flawlessly from roughly the mid-1600s to present-day India. I couldn’t put it down. This was definitely the most well-researched fiction book I read this year. Das’s writing style is so beautiful, as is the story itself, which explores what it means to be human. It sounds corny but I promise it’s not! Looking forward to reading more by Das.
I picked up Frida: The Biography of Frida Kahlo by Hayden Herrera before visiting Mexico City this year. This was such a good decision. Herrera’s biography is so well researched, and I’m amazed by how many people who were close to Kahlo she was able to interview for this book. It paints such a complete picture of Frida’s life and how it influenced her art. It’s so thorough; this book will practically make anyone who reads it into a Kahlo scholar (I will now be insufferable to anyone who goes to a Kahlo exhibit or museum with me). It really enhanced my visit to Mexico City as well; I feel like I had a much greater appreciation of and better context for her artwork that I saw in CDMX (as well as Diego Rivera’s), her and Rivera’s homes, Trotsky’s home, and even various sites around the city not directly connected to them. Since reading this book I was able to visit MoMA in NYC and see three more Kahlo paintings, including “Self-Portrait with Cropped Hair”, which literally made me cry. If you want to learn more about Frida Kahlo, this is the book to read.
Moby-Dick by Herman Melville took me by surprise. I think the experience was enhanced by reading this aloud with my partner, and there’s no way I would have ever read it otherwise. We had joked about reading Moby-Dick and somehow that joke ended up actually happening. I was shocked by how funny this book is at times. Not to mention the unintentional (or maybe mostly intentional) homoeroticism. One minute I would be laughing at the quote “Squeeze! squeeze! squeeze! all the morning long; I squeezed that sperm till I myself almost melted into it; I squeezed that sperm till a strange sort of insanity came over me” and the next I would find myself genuinely enthralled by the storytelling, which I think deserves even more credit given the fact that we all know what happens at the end. Obviously it’s not perfect. It’s a product of the 19th century. It’s racist at times. It’s long. I completely see why people don’t read this in 2023, but I think more people should give it a chance.
Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones wasn’t my very favorite book of the year (because it's aimed at kids I think), but I still loved it – and I think it’s technically perfect, hence the 5 stars. If you love the Miyazaki movie, don’t go in expecting it to be the same, but do still read it. I think it’s even better than the movie, which I believe is the popular consensus among people who have read it, and which I think says a lot!
Least favorites
My least favorite books this year were (in order of completion): Roadside Picnic, Before the Coffee Gets Cold, and Convenience Store Woman. More thoughts below:
Roadside Picnic by Boris and Arkady Strugatsky was a big disappointment for me. I think the concept of a “roadside picnic” as it’s presented in the book by Dr. Pilman (aliens have visited earth, but only for an inconsequential stop-off, a “roadside picnic”, leaving behind what’s essentially their trash, but which is nonetheless lifechanging and incomprehensible to earthlings) is fascinating, and has so much potential. This just didn’t meet that potential for me. My biggest struggle with enjoying classic sci-fi books is the pervasive misogyny, which was definitely present here. The ending is also a bit disappointing – and abrupt. I didn’t enjoy the film (Stalker) either, but I think it does a better job getting across what I think the authors were attempting to say.
Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi has a fun, light sci-fi concept, which drew me in. The setting in a coffee shop also sounded like it might be cozy and fun. It was not fun. I wish I had done a little more research before reading this book because I hated it. The characters are boring and one-dimensional. The stories are overly sentimental and saccharine. And worst of all, I think this book is deeply misogynistic. I felt crazy after reading this because I hadn’t heard anyone else make this complaint, so I searched the internet and found someone who feels the same way and summarized it really well – here’s her blog post about it. The worst is the last story in this collection, which comes off as deeply anti-abortion and equates a woman’s happiness with giving birth (even if it literally costs her life). What the fuck do people see in this?
Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata was another translated Japanese novel that was a dud for me. I want to give Murata another chance, so I still plan to read Earthlings, but she’s kind of on thin ice right now. I expected this to be an anti-work book about how it’s fine to not be career-driven, and it sort of was at times, but I feel like Murata got off track as soon as she introduced a character who is a literal incel and put him in a fake-dating situation with the protagonist. This was insufferable. There was also potential here to say something interesting about how a character who is clearly both asexual and autistic fits into a society that values marriage, reproduction, productivity, and adherence to the norm, but Murata fumbles saying anything meaningful about all of this, and verges on coming across as infantilizing and othering the main character for these characteristics.
Reading goals
Last year I identified 6 books that I hoped to read in 2023 (Convenience Store Woman, Terraform: Watch/Worlds/Burn, Before the Coffee Gets Cold, One Hundred Years of Solitude, Binti, and Roadside Picnic) and, to my surprise, I actually read all of them except for One Hundred Years of Solitude. Interestingly, only one of these books (Binti) was a favorite, and 3 of them were my least favorite books of the year. I guess it goes to show that the books I think I’m going to like don’t always end up working out for me (a good reminder for me to not buy books new if I’m not sure I’ll love them! Luckily I mainly read library books or buy used).
Here are my reading goals for 2024:
Read at least 22 books – higher than my goal for this year, but fewer than I actually ended up reading this year so it’s not too much pressure
Read more non-fiction
Read One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez, Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir, Are Prisons Obsolete? by Angela Davis, at least one more Octavia E. Butler book, and at least one more Ursula K. Le Guin book
If you actually read this whole post, thanks for listening to my ramblings! I'd love to hear what your favorite books of 2023 were, or if you agree or disagree with any of my book opinions.

I just finished sketching the third sibling! Everyone! Give a round to applause tooo...
Tumblr media
Calliope! Or Skelly, for friends! Ahhh... Brings me back to the days of the circus... When Sulli used to tease 'em and call him 'Smelly'... He wasn't much better, to be honest- whatever- their role was to be a contortionist! And oh boy if he was good at his job! One time, they made a victim puke because of the sounds of his bones cracking and their flesh moving! That is impressive!
He also loved LOVED stories! They would tell me all about myths, tales, fairytales, but also real life stories! Historical events and adventures of when he and their siblings were younger! Oh man! I miss it... I- uhh...-But now I have to go and sketch the last member of the circus! The last one and the oldest one! Buh-bye!

Official Think Fast Run Fast Chad Powers 200 T Shirt
I remember a Official Think Fast Run Fast Chad Powers 200 T Shirt memoir — Beasts, Men, and Gods — by Ferdinand Ossendowski, a White Pole who fled the Bolshevik revolution through Siberia. He served in General Kolchak’s All-Russian Government before escaping through the Steppes north of Mongolia, and then participated in the government of that most notorious adventurer, the “Mad Baron” Ungern-Sternberg, who attempted to take over Mongolia to restore an imperial Khaganate as part of an imagined reactionary restoration of the Great Mongol, Chinese, and Russian monarchies in the interests of the “warrior races” of Germans and Mongols (a Baltic German, he considered the old Russian ruling class to represent Germandom over and against Jews and Slavs). Some of the things – the acts of desperation and madness, in which he himself was no disinterested observer – Ossendowski relates are harrowing. But this part struck me as very much making a point about what people think of the Steppe peoples, and of what (German-trained) nationalists like Ungern-Sternberg did (and would do again) to the Mongols. And, other things:

A Buncha Boneheads (Final)
Originally posted on My Patreon (Follow the link to see the full image)
Well, after drawing 88 different skeletal characters, here it is, the full series of "A Buncha Boneheads"! I was originally going to try and sell this as a poster but after looking into it, I don't think I can do that unless I want to deal with several dozen copyright laws.
This was quite the fun little exercise for me- the biggest challenge was trying to emulate the art styles of so many different series and properties. There are definitely more skull-headed characters out there that I could add, but frankly I think a nice even 88 is good enough, and there are other projects I want to work on for the future. Overall I'm pretty proud of this.
With that said, let me know if I've made a spelling mistake or something anywhere on here- I've tried my best but I just know I missed one or two somewhere.
The full list of characters is written below:
The Full list of characters are, in order:

New Fic: Hidden Treasure
Happy late Valentine's Day! A RottenCrop romantic adventure for @freshouttaparsnips!
Summary: Axe knows something is missing, but what could it be? He has everything he needs right here on Buckwheat's farm where he and his brother have been living for some time. If only he could remember what he'd lost.
Buck finds a homemade treasure map in one of Axe's pockets doing laundry. Together, they go in search of Axe's treasure.
Notes: Okay, so I've never written either of these skellies before, so please keep that in mind. I've been told I did okay with their characterizations, but please don't roast me too hard if you disagree, lol.
That said, this was a lot of fun to write and I wouldn't mind exploring them a bit more if muses cooperate.
Thanks so much for reading, and enjoy!
Read on AO3
Or read here!
It started as a typical day, not unlike any other day before it. Axe woke up that morning and shuffled his way downstairs, following the rapturous scent of bacon and eggs that Buck was cooking.
Buck smiled at him, his toothy grin causing Axe’s battered soul to pulse a little harder. Axe smiled back as best he could, tried to make it look normal instead of scary or maniacal. He might have succeeded, he wasn’t sure. Either way, Buck seemed content to accept it as he turned and continued cooking.
Axe didn’t ask what he could do to help. They’d waltzed that waltz a few too many times now, and while Axe couldn’t really remember all that had come of it, he did know he couldn’t do much to help until it came time for cleanup.
Breakfast was delicious, as always. Their brothers both came in from whatever chores they’d been working on to wash up and eat with them. Seeing Sugar getting a full meal never failed to send a sense of peace and fulfillment through Axe’s being.
As soon as they were done, Sugar and Cornfluff thanked Buck for the meal and headed back out to work on the fields. This was where Axe came in. He gathered the dishes and began washing up. As always, Buck insisted on drying the dishes and Axe insisted he didn’t have to.
As ordinary and typical and routine this morning felt, something different started eating at Axe after the dishes were put away and he’d made his way back to his bedroom to get ready for the day.
Something was missing. What it was, he didn’t know; he just knew that something important was not here when it should be.
It wasn’t his brother; he’d just seen Sugar less than a half an hour ago!
He checked under the loose floorboard at the foot of the bed just to the side of the wardrobe. His emergency stash of canned goods and non-perishables was still there. He and Buck still had what he hoped were lighthearted arguments about that, but Axe couldn’t let himself go without it. Any number of things could happen to destroy the plentiful life they lived here, and Axe would be damned again if he wasn’t at least a little bit prepared for it.
Securing the floorboard again, he grunted as got back to his feet and tried to think of what could be missing. Everything he held dear to his very battered soul was here, or at least nearby. Even now, all he had to do was look out the window to see Buck going about his duties.
He was probably wondering what was taking Axe so long to get to work. Chores didn’t wait for mysteries to be solved, no matter how important they seemed.
------------------------------------------
“heya, axe, found this in your laundry th’smornin,” Buck drawled that evening as Axe was putting said laundry away.
He turned to see Buck holding out a folded piece of paper. Huh. It was probably a receipt or something that Sugar or Cornfluff had asked him to hold onto for some reason. He took the paper and opened it up to reveal instead a full size sheet of paper with odd markings on it.
He tilted his head and tried to figure out what it was and why he’d have it in his pocket. Turning the paper this way and that, he all but gave up and looked at Buck. He just stood there with his perma-smirk, hands in his pockets, and rocking slightly back on his heels.
He found himself reaching up to tug on his dead socket, nervous to tell Buck he didn’t know what this paper was or why he had it. Was Buck waiting for an explanation? Was it something bad? Did it have something to do with the fight they’d had last week?
Axe didn’t remember what had started it or even what it was actually about, but he did remember how it had scared him, made him wonder if he and Sugar were going to get kicked off the farm. Was this paper part of why they had fought?
Buck reached out and stopped him before he could reach his socket. “it ain’t a big deal, axe; i just thought you might want it back. people don’t usually make treasure maps for trivial things.”
Treasure maps?
He met Buck’s pale green eye lights and spoke his thoughts. “treasure maps?” he asked. “is that what this is?”
Buck smiled for real and took the paper to turn it upside down. “yeah. see, this here is the porch,” he pointed at a box at the bottom of the paper, then moved his finger along a dotted line, “this is the path you’d take, the corn field, a few trees out past, and you’ve got ‘x marks the spot.’”
Axe tried to visualize the path, but he just couldn’t. The corn fields were easy enough to see in his head; he spent enough time lounging in the long grass just next to those fields and staring up at the vibrant blue sky, corn stalks gently swaying in the breeze. Out past those fields, however, was nothing but blank.
“what d’you think the treasure is?” he asked.
Buck chuckled. “ain’t got a clue, but it would be fun to find out, huh?” He stepped a little closer to Axe and squeezed his fingers gently. “you up for an adventure?”
He didn’t bother reminding Buck that every day with him was an adventure. Instead, he just nodded.
------------------------------------------
Out past the cornfields didn’t seem to exist. Axe knew the fields were big, but how long should it realistically take to get through them? Buck had insisted they go through because that was how the map showed, but it would probably have been faster to go around.
But then, Buck knew these fields better than anyone, better even than Cornfluff who could almost see over the tops of the full-grown ears on corn.
He chose not to say anything, didn’t whine or complain. Instead, he trudged alongside Buck and listened as he theorized about what treasure could be hidden at the end of the trail.
“maybe we’ll find some good stew,” he said with a hearty groan of approval. “with any luck it’ll be canned; otherwise we’re lookin’ at a mess to clean up.” He chuckled, and Axe couldn’t help but smile at the sound.
“what do you think we’ll find, axe?” Buck turned to him just as he pushed aside another cornstalk.
Axe wasn’t sure what to answer. He didn’t really have any thoughts on what might be hidden. There were scant few things he’d want to keep safe, and most of them would die if he buried them. Either die or dig themselves right back up. Not worth the trouble.
He shrugged. “probably some stew,” he finally said.
Buck snickered and nodded, pushing past the next few stalks before talking about how well the crops were doing this year. Axe listened on, his soul pulsing happily at the sound of his voice and the drawl that was so distinctively Buck.
Once they finally reached the end of the cornfield, Axe took a second to look at the vast expanse of land. There were miles between farmhouses, and even from here he couldn’t see over the last hill to where he thought he remembered a red barn sat for the neighbor’s horses. Trees were not nearly as abundant as the map made it seem, but there was a small cluster of four growing together about a half a mile out to the right.
“aha!” Buck called out and pointed to those four trees. “look, i think that’s where we go.” He pointed to the map and sure enough, Axe had jotted down four diseased-looking trees just above a red ‘X’. In reality, the trees were large and healthy, leaves vividly colorful with reds and yellows, oranges and even purples. Colors Axe never would have imagined a leaf could turn, but it was right there in front of him and it was magnificent.
Buck gently took his hand and squeezed.
“sure is pretty, ain’t it?”
Axe smiled; he never could hide his reactions to pretty things, but then, he didn’t want to. Not from Buck. “it is.”
“c’mon, let’s go see what this treasure is.” He tugged lightly on Axe’s hand, and they were off.
The four trees were formed in something of a half circle, and in the center of that circle was an obviously recently-disturbed section of dirt. Buck grinned at Axe and walked over to it, gently prodding it with his right foot.
“well, here we are!” He folded the map and put it in the front pocket of his overalls. “you wanna do the honors?” He gestured down at the pile before producing a small shovel.
Axe took the shovel and they both knelt down. He’d had plenty of experience working with various farm tools over the time he and Sugar had been here, but it was still a bit awkward sometimes. The small shovel felt strange in his hands and he didn’t like it. He set it aside and scowled at it before going at the pile with his hands.
He could feel Buck staring at him, but it didn’t feel like judging. He could almost feel the amused affection pouring off of him. Instead of focusing on that, he put all of his attention on the pile of dirt and uncovering whatever treasure he had decided to hide. He really did hope it wasn’t something like a bowl of soup.
It didn’t take long to uncover a small wooden box. It looked familiar, but Axe couldn’t place it. When had he gotten it? Was it even his? Had he stolen this?
“huh,” Buck muttered, reaching out to gently touch the box. “what’s inside?”
Swallowing, Axe unclasped the little lock and opened the box. Inside were pictures and small trinkets. He picked up one of the pictures and realized it was of him and Buck, one that Sugar had taken not long ago. It was perhaps the first time Axe had realized he was in love with Buck.
“hey, i remember that day,” Buck said, gently touching the picture. “that was a good day.”
It sure was. Axe just nodded and put it back to pick up another one. It was of Buck, one of Axe’s favorites.
Each item was a reminder of how much Buck meant to him. A tiny charm of a bird in flight, the damaged pit of a peach, extra buttons for one of the first shirts Buck had given him, and many more pictures showing Buck’s charming smile and soothing, pale green magic.
Axe remembered now why he had buried this box.
He sucked in a breath and looked at Buck who was smiling gently at him.
“anything comin’ back to you yet?” he asked, scooting an inch closer to Axe.
Axe nodded and tried to ignore the urge to tug at his socket. He was safe here, and everything was going to be okay.
“i didn’t want you to take them back,” he said softly, secretly hoping Buck wouldn’t be able to hear him.
Buck once again scooted a little closer. “take what back? your little talismans?”
Axe nodded again.
“why would i do that?”
Shrugging, Axe shifted a little bit and felt his hand rising up to his socket. Buck reached out and took it calmly, brushing their fingers together reassuringly.
“i brought it out here after our fight last week,” Axe said quietly, staring at their hands. “i thought…” He really didn’t want to say this, but he did want to trust Buck. He knew he could trust him. “i don’t remember why, but i was afraid you didn’t want us here anymore.”
“oh, axe…” Buck squeezed his fingers so softly, lifted them up to his mouth to press a gentle kiss to his damaged knuckles. “i want you listen to me now, okay?”
Axe swallowed and nodded, looking up to meet Buck’s eye lights.
“no matter what mistakes are made or how angry i seem, i will never take away things i’ve already given to you. these are yours, no matter what.” He gestured to the box and scooted a little bit closer. “and i won’t ever ask you to leave.”
Axe sighed. “you can’t promise that,” he said sadly. Things changed, sometimes quickly and drastically.
Buck nodded. “okay, you’re right. but i can promise that i won’t make you leave without making sure you have somewhere else to go first.”
That sounded more like a reasonable promise. Axe nodded again and leaned slightly into Buck’s side. He tensed only a little when Buck wrapped an arm around him, holding him tightly. He was grateful that Buck had ended up on his good side; he could rest the undamaged side of his skull against Buck’s shoulder.
“i’ve really loved having you and your brother here,” Buck said against his skull. “i mean that. i can’t see any reason i could ever want you gone, especially seeing as how i’ve grown pretty darn fond of you.”
Axe closed his eyes and sucked in a slow, peaceful breath. “i’m pretty fond of you, too,” he said, wishing he could say just how fond of Buck he truly was.
“yeah?” Buck asked, pulling back just a little bit. “not sure i would’a guessed that.” He glanced at the box with a teasing grin and a wink. “but honestly, axe, i’m not close to perfect but i can understand pretty good if you talk to me. i know it ain’t always easy for you to remember these things, but i’m willin’ to say it as many times as you need. all i need you to remember is to talk to me, okay?”
Axe nodded. “i’ll do my best.”
Buck smiled then and leaned in to press a soft kiss to his cheekbone. “that’s all i ask.”
Axe stared at Buck for a second, his free hand floating up to gently touch his cheekbone. Buck’s minty green eye lights sparkled with intensity as he stared back, mouth set in a calming smile.
“i think i love you,” Axe heard himself blurt. Before he could even try to pull back or be embarrassed, Buck laughed his soft, comforting laugh and brought their hands up to once again kiss his knuckles.
“i think i love you, too,” he said against his fingers. “in fact, i think it a lot.”
Axe could hardly believe it. He never thought he could be this happy. Happiness was for other monsters, and yet here he was, his soul close to bursting with how much he loved the monster in front of him.
“how ‘bout we get back to the house? i can whip up some strawberry shortcake and we can sit on the couch together to eat it?”
Axe wasn’t sure what he loved more: Buck or his strawberry shortcake. At least he didn’t have to choose between the two, and he was definitely looking forward to spending some quality time with both.
“that sounds perfect.”
Before they stood up, Buck leaned in and pressed a gentle kiss to Axe’s teeth. “you’re perfect.”
That time Axe laughed out loud. “i’m not!”
Buck just winked. “maybe not; no one is. but you’re perfect for me.”
He stood up and helped Axe to his feet before he filled the hole in the dirt. He tucked the small shovel back in his pocket and took Axe’s hand again. Axe held the box close to his chest as they walked back home.

Out of Ice Cream
for @magpiemorality‘s Sanders Sides creative challenge I’ve done a story carrying on from this Dukexiety one shot where Virgil find out Remus is ticklish.
Here’s how I think they could get together
Warnings: Suggestive talk, quite a lot of suggestiveness really, tickling,
Let me know if I’ve missed anything. I’m never sure quite what to include in warnings
/\/\/\/\
Remus was actually innocent of the thing which currently had him carefully tracking every noise in the apartment. He just hadn't been listening to what Roman asked while his brother was over and looking for a snack in the kitchen. He still knew his room-mate would blame him for the last mint ice cream having been eaten and the punishment would be swiftly carried out.
While he wouldn't mind being pinned down by Virgil again, or being ordered to beg him, neither of those things were as pleasurable when accompanied by tickling. In fact Remus would happily put himself into position to beg if only it was for less innocent actions.
The awareness of the sounds of the apartment currently was a little pointless though, as the clock distinctly showed Virgil was still at work and wouldn't be home for another hour. That possibly gave Remus enough time to go to the shops and hopefully get some more ice cream.
Hopefully. Fingers crossed and toes tied in knots.
Actually tying his toes up made walking difficult so at least until he'd gotten the ice cream that could wait. No time for tripping over when its a serious case of avoiding wriggling fingers.
It was as he took the receipt, already reading it to thank the cashier by name that Remus saw his doom signed. The time was after Virgil would have left work and it would take a large dork sized miracle to get home before him now. At least he remembered to yell his thanks as he raced off, still hoping to avoid any retribution.
The hallway being silent outside their apartment could either be very good or a sign of doom and Remus couldn't decide which as he tried to catch his breath after the run. That was before he heard the footsteps moving about inside and had to just bite the bullet and race through it. Dodging the executioner sounded like a lot more fun than this afternoon was proving it to be.
“Virgie! I'm home and I have ice cream!” He trilled, almost singing, as he half ran half slid through to the kitchen, already getting the box out of the bag to throw in the freezer, using the door to stop his slide. No point in delaying anything by seeing how hard he could hit the cabinets today.
“And why might I ask were there none in there anyway? Those are my ice creams that you never touch.” Virgil raised an eyebrow, fingers twitching a little, enough Remus was very tempted to put one of the ice creams in his hand. Ice play wasn't really something he was into though.
Remus still just exaggerated a laugh. “Silly thing, a thief broke in, demanded ice cream and that was all we had! Roman was over. He can confirm.”
“So you gave my ice cream, repeating Mine, to your brother? Cause look what I have here.” Virgil smirked, bringing up the hand Remus had thought he was leaning back on, one of the blackberry and liquorice ice creams Remus loved in it.
“You want an adventure story or can I just start running now?” Remus bounced a little, already feeling the phantom tickles he was sure Virgil was about to threatened.
He was more enthralled by Virgil standing to lean over him to throw the ice cream back in the freezer to actually run though, at least until he heard the whisper of “Beg!”
Then it was all movement and Remus was dizzy in the best of ways as he raced through the rooms of their apartment, spinning past corners and trying to dodge past tight sections Virgil couldn't leap.
It was one of those areas that Remus was caught passing, Virgil apparently had learnt a few better ways to leap their furniture since discovering how ticklish Remus is. Being suddenly pinned to the floor when he'd been running a moment earlier made him feel even more like prey for some soaring birds even as he tried to scramble up again.
That just meant he was incidentally giving Virgil a piggy back ride and achieving nothing towards escaping the arms now teasing his neck and the top of his sides just above where Virgil's legs had wrapped and locked into place. “No no no nonononono. Ssssstoppppppp popopopop. I didn't mean to. Nononono.” Remus whined through loud laughter, nowhere near to his usual cackle, curling up instinctively as much as he could in the small space between furniture.
Remus didn't quite know what to make of it when instead of the tickling getting worse at their new position with him curled under Virgil on the floor he felt a kiss get placed on his neck as soon as his hand moved to try protecting his sides more.
“You're cute when you get all flustered like that Re. Maybe actually listen to what Roman asks if he can have next time though.” Virgil knelt up enough for Remus to roll until he was laying on his back. “I wonder if being tickled or the threat of it is the only way I can see you like that.”
“Almost sounds like you wanna ravish me there, Spidey Skelly.” Remus gasped, more than aware of what fun they could have with Virgil on top of him like this. It was just his nature to try and make him see it too.
Virgil didn't react in any form of rejection or disgust he'd expected though, instead leaning forward until there was little space between them. “If I do, are you objecting?” The whisper was lower than it had been by the freezer and entirely to blame for the groan Remus let out before finding Virgil backing off and getting up. “We should probably actually talk about, you know, being in a relationship and shit before that though, right?” Virgil sounded like his anxiety had just kicked in over just how forward he'd been acting.
Remus just blinked for a second, taking in yet another abrupt change of direction for the conversation happening without his input. Usually he'd be the one making the conversation derail but now Remus was convinced there had been no tracks to follow since he entered the apartment again. “Sure. I mean I don't mind if ya wanna ravish me without all that romance talk but we can do that now if you'd prefer? Or are you going to get annoyed over the ice cream again, cause you've kind of stolen my ability to get distracted today?”
“You got me more. I kind of assumed that was what you were doing when you weren't home anyway. We're cool on that.” Virgil waved it off, shaking his head a little. “So you actually do like me then? This isn't something Roman put you up to or whatever?” He'd moved to sit on the back of the sofa while speaking, only looking back over at the end of the question.
Remus just sat up, happy to stay on the floor. “Dude, if I thought you'd be willing to wreck me I'd have been kneeling and begging forgiveness as soon as you got home. You want candles and romance and I'll try my best. It ain't something I'm used to doing but you're way more than any of the hook ups I've had before could ever have been.”
“I was more thinking dates to see the trash marketed as horror movies and seeing how many cinemas we can get banned from, but trying to get kicked out of romantic restaurants while attempting Roman's version of a date sounds pretty hilarious too. You yell obscene things while I have panic attacks and we'll either have then jumping to give us free food or calling security on us within ten minutes.” Virgil shrugged, obviously ignoring the start of what Remus said, or rather just treating it as a Remus version of admitting to feelings.
“You get me, Jack Frost! So we're boyfriends now?” Remus cackled, kneeling to lean closer to Virgil as he spoke.
“Looks like we are.” The agreement was all he needed before Remus was pulling Virgil into a deep first kiss.

Issue 30 came out today, so I'll be talking about it (minimally) and also about solicits for upcoming Issues. Also, I've decided to try out uploading images on mobile, so this post is also kind of a test for that (for that reason, I'll also be keeping images to a minimum).
Like I said, I'm not going to be talking about Issue 30 too much since not a lot actually happened, but there are some key points I'd like to mention, including Gemerl and Omega (or what's left of him) getting kidnapped by Metal Sonic and Eggman, most of the Deadly Six going missing, and us also learning where Sonic went...
Tumblr media
Hey, we were right! He did get sent to Blaze's dimension! They also brought in the Koala dudes from Rush Adventure, so I wonder if that means Marine will show up next Issue or soon.
That's pretty much it for what I wanted to bring up regarding Issue 30's contents, but there is one interesting piece of trivia I'd like to say about one of it's covers. As it turns out, in the A Cover for this Issue, that reoccurring side character Lanolin the Sheep was actually originally going to be on the cover, but was later edited out. The version with her lineart in it was released online though, so here's a comparison of the two versions. The one with just lineart has Lanolin hanging out at the bottom, but the final has her completely cut out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm not completely sure why they decided to cut her out, but maybe it was to maintain her status as a background character (you know, despite her already being on one of the covers for Issue 2 and actually showing up quite a bit).
On the topic of covers, we also have this finished (I think?) panoramic cover for the Issue 29 and 30 Retail Incentive covers...
Tumblr media
We also have a few covers already for upcoming Issues, but some of them I might have covered already (although I can't actually remember because of how long we've had the Issue 30-33 solicits), so I'll just be showing two that I find noteworthy. First up, we have this really nice Jon Gray cover for Issue 31...
Tumblr media
"MISSING! Please don't find them. Seriously, they're awful and they smell."
Never change Jon Gray and Reggie Graham, never change :3
We also have this really cool Diana Skelly cover for Issue 2 of Bad Guys, and I really like this one because it looks like it's going to be part of a panoramic cover (which I hope it is because I wanna see Rough and Tumble hanging out at this bar :3)...
Tumblr media
That'll be it for covers for now, but it's time to look at release dates and solicits! Some of these I might have already put on here months ago, but some of them are completely new.
Issue 31 (September 2nd) - It's all led to this... the thrilling two-part epilogue to the Metal Virus Saga. The world has changed. Heroes and villains plan for the future as reconstruction begins. But one hero remains missing...
Issue 32 (September 30th) - The second half of the Metal Virus Saga epilogue. With all the chaos of the recent past still fresh in everyone's minds, Dr. Eggman launches a new assault-determined to take down his enemies once and for all.
Issue 33 (also September 30th? That may be wrong) - Hold onto your chili dogs, Sonic fans! Long-time artist Evan Stanley takes over as writer with an action-packed, friendship-fueled new arc: "Chao Races and Badnik Bases!" The perfect jumping-on point for new readers! The Metal Virus is gone, but things aren't quite back to normal. Omega is damaged and his allies turn to Tails and Sonic for help. The only way to rebuild him is to trade parts with a mysterious champion Chao racer... but things aren't what they seem.
Issue 34 (October 14th) - It's off to the races with Cream, Cheese, Amy, and Rouge! They have to keep up their winning streak or surrender Cheese to Clutch's evil...clutches! Meanwhile, Sonic and Tails are being watched by a mysterious figure in Eggman's seemingly abandoned base and Shadow investigates a mystery!
Bad Guys Issue 1 (September 16th) - The mastermind behind the Metal Virus isn't done yet. Ian Flynn returns to answer: What happened to Dr. Starline? The Shadowy Scientist is back to his evil antics in Bad Guys! And what better place to concoct nefarious plans than one of Dr. Eggman's abandoned bases? But that is easier said than done when badniks are guarding the entrance! Dr. Starline knows he can't do it alone, so he decides to recruit some familiar and not so friendly faces.
Bad Guys Issue 2 (October 28th) - From Sonic veterans Ian Flynn and Jack Lawrence comes "Smash & Grab," an exciting story jam-packed with bad guys and badniks! Some of Sonic's worst enemies are back and badder than ever! Dr. Starline, Dr. Eggman's former-right hand, has brought together Mimic, Rough, Tumble, and Zavok and promised them even more incredible power... if they can stop fighting each other and start fighting badniks to get to it!
The only really noteworthy stuff I want to bring up about these solicitations is the stuff in Issue 33 and 34 regarding a new character, presumably a Chao racer named Clutch. Nothing is known about this character other than his (I'm just kinda he's a dude, but he might not be) name and what he does for a living, so stuff like his species and whether or not he's like a hero or a villain or whatever is kind-of unknown. The Issue 34 solicit also mentions that Shadow leaves to investigate something, and at the end of Issue 30 he actually does leave to follow Eggman, so him leaving then could be what leads up to whatever happens in Issue 34.
Anyway, that's all I have to say for now. The next date we have set for a release is September 2nd, so I guess I'll see you all then!

Here’s a snip of a new chapter bc i’m bored asf
You awoke to the smell of burning coming from the kitchen, causing you to bolt out of your bed.
'Who's committing Arson without me?!' you slid into the kitchen with your fluffy socks to see...
...Papyrus cooking, oh that was nice, but he was currently unaware of the fact the pan is burning, so you cleared your throat to get his attention- you succeeded.
"OH! GOOD MORNING MISS. HUMAN!" He beamed.
"Morning Pap, could you pass me a large lid?"
"OF COURSE I CAN!"
You place the lid on the pan, successfully putting out the fire of what seemed to be burnt spaghetti?
"I SEE YOU HAVE NOTICED MY BRILLIANT COOKING!"
"Pap."
"YES?"
"We can have spaghetti later- it isn't suitable for breakfasts, okay?"
He thought for a few moments."ALRIGHT!" causing you to grin as you grabbed some bacon from the fridge, you were going to make bacon pancakes- true adventure time style!
𝕿𝖎𝖒𝖊𝕾𝖐𝖎𝖕 𝖙𝖔 𝖋𝖎𝖓𝖎𝖘𝖍𝖎𝖓𝖌 𝖙𝖍𝖊 𝖈𝖔𝖔𝖐𝖎𝖓𝖌 𝖇𝖗𝖔𝖚𝖌𝖍𝖙 𝖙𝖔 𝖞𝖔𝖚 𝖇𝖞 𝕬𝖉𝖛𝖊𝖓𝖙𝖚𝖗𝖊 𝕿𝖎𝖒𝖊
"Could you put these on there please?" you gestured to the table."I need to wake your bro and the other two."
Papyrus gave a thumbs up before scooping up the plates mindfully and striding over to the table as you bounced up the stairs.
"Nice or mean, nice or mean, nice o- that's a bone." You dodged the red-tinted bone coming your way as you though how to wake them up.
"Edge, buddy, pal, fellow-" You began
"I AM NOT YOUR 'BUDDY', HUMAN!"
"You fuckin' will be- but that ain't why I'm here, breakfast is ready downstairs." You smiled at him- all you got in response was a 'tch' as he brushed past you.
"That went well!" "NO, IT DIDN'T." "GO AND EAT EDGE!!" "FINE!"
After several thuds, you verified that Edge was, in fact, in the consuming room.
Two rounder skulls had peeped into the hallway in your yelling.
"Ah! Hey, you two, breakfast's ready- so get your non-existing butts downstairs, I've got a phone call to make."
You pull your phone out of your pocket and waved it slightly with a small smile. The two nod and walk past before hesitating.
"Where's the kitc-" Classic began, before being interrupted by you.
"Down the two flights of stairs, you'll see a sign saying 'consume' In Fancy cursive, then follow the sound of Edge probably being a ray of sunshine." You say the last part sarcastically, getting the a laugh from Red before he spoke.
"Wait, ya' said that th' sign said 'consume' right? Why not jus' have it, you know, say 'Kitchen'?"
You deadpanned."It's me, that's why"
Classic rolled his eye lights before dragging red off.
'Weird mood change, but everyone has their days...' You sat by the wall, dialling a certain berry skelly's number.
