Peach Blossom Pavilion - Chapter 4
“The red silk dress embroidered with a golden phoenix clung to her body as tightly as if the bird was painted on her skin. Her jacket’s high collar wrapped around her neck like petals enveloping a bud-”
This is such a nice description that leaves a beautiful image behind.

The Empress of China
The Empress of China
We tell our sons they can grow up to be president. But do we assure our daughters that they, too, have a chance to be the leader their country? It’s a hard case to make in the United States since up to now not one of our 44 presidents has been a woman.
But wait. My daughters are half-Chinese. Surely there’s a Chinese role model for them. Surely in the 2235 years since the unification of China…

Peach Blossom Pavilion - Chapter 33
"'Bang! That's how I put a hole between my fourth concubine's pretty brows. Ha! Ha! Ha! Too bad she didn't look a bit like my daughter, otherwise I would spare her life as I did yours.'
'You killed Teng Xiong! I spat hard on Fung's face. He flinched.'
Teng Xiong deserved, better, so much better. Though it seems out of character from Xiang Xiang as she never shows much care for Tenx Xiong as a human, I'm pleased with her reaction.

—- Torn from her family. Destined to become the most desired courtesan in China.
A seductive and evocative debut that opens the doors on life as a Chinese courtesan in the Peach Blossom Pavilion…
Behind the doors of the pavilion, a world of sensuality and intrigue awaits…
Falsely accused of murder, Xiang Xiang’s father is executed, and her mother forced into a Buddhist nunnery. Xiang Xiang, alone and friendless at thirteen years old, is tricked into entering the Peach Blossom Pavilion, where she is given the name Bao Lan – Precious Orchid.
There she is trained in the fine arts of womanhood, studying music, literature, painting, and more importantly, the art of seduction and pleasuring men; and becomes one of China’s most successful courtesans.
However, Precious Orchid is determined to avenge her parents and sets out on a journey that includes passion, adventure, danger, fame, and finally, her chance to achieve the justice she has sought so long.
An enchanting tale of opulence and desire, perfect for fans of Anchee Min and Memoirs of a Geisha. —-
I downloaded this book A) because it was free, and B) because I loved Memoirs of a Geshia, and this book promised to be much the same.
I really can’t say for sure if I liked this or not. It kept me intrigued enough to keep reading and want to finish, but some parts of it were so daft I couldn’t take it seriously. First of all, the main character is so completely fickle. She changes her mind and purpose in life so often that the book could be sectioned up and sold as 3 or 4 completely different books. Secondly the euphemisms for sex were completely ridiculous! I felt like shouting at the book ‘JUST SAY PENIS.’ Honestly. I know they are supposed to be innocent but not that badly! Not only that but I am under the impression that a Geshia is a classy person who is very choosey over her clients, this one gave it up to anyone. Not just her body, but her heart. You cannot be a lesbian one day and then suddenly fall in love with a reclusive monk when your lesbian lover goes missing in the woods. (Yes, that is part of the storyline.)
*SPOILER* and in the end she doesn't even achieve her main goal throughout the whole entire book! WTF!
I think it’s safe to say I wouldn’t recommend this! Laughable.

“‘Ha, don’t you think so? Your mother’s going to be a nun and you a whore, huh?’”
Well that certainly is ironic.

Peach Blossom Pavilion - Chapter 32
'Yes, Ouyang furen,' Mama said, her voice powerless as a boneless dog's. 'one last thing. Don't ever tell anyone that you've seen me or the calligraphy.' They barked like lost dogs at the sight of their master."
Okay, I'm mildly surprised she planned all of this, lying, getting everything prepared, tricking them to do her bidding. The fact that I'm slightly curious to see her next move.

Books.
I finished Peach Blossom Pavilion two nights ago. It's the story of the last ming ji--prestigious courtesan--in China. Kind of similar to your Japanese geishas, but with sex as entertainment rather than classical music and dance.
It's fantastic if you like M-rated fanfiction. -cough-
Before you think I'm a total perv for reading four hundred and twenty-one pages of the story of a prostitute, though, hear me out--the story, the plot itself, is absolutely exquisite. Xiang Xiang, the main character, is sold into prostitution after her father was framed for the murder of a warlord's daughter. The warlord had Xiang Xiang's father executed and her mother forced into a nunnery, leaving Xiang Xiang to be taken away to an elite, expensive prostitution house called Peach Blossom Pavilion.
At first, Xiang Xiang is utterly innocent and naive. I felt awful for her as she was forced into this world of prostitution as she barely only hit puberty.
I enjoyed this story because of the rare peek inside a side of historic Chinese culture I'd never heard about. It's certainly not the prostitution that intrigued me, but the prestige of it all. Xiang Xiang wasn't known just for her beauty, but for her expertise in art, calligraphy, poetry, and playing of the musical instruments pipa and qin. Xiang Xiang held her head high with a poise and grace I envied despite her night-time job.
Peach Blossom Pavilion follows Xiang Xiang as she dreams of escaping the prostitution house to avenge her father's death, reunite with her mother, and find true love. As prudish as I am when it comes to talk and imagery of sex, I really, really, really loved this book.
Now I'm onto The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. Guys, I just love books. A lot.
