Dogwarts - A Horror-Themed Minecraft Map
Ever since the beheading, paranoia has taken hold of the Red King.
Tumblr media
Dogwarts is a short Minecraft map full of secrets, made for AUFest 2024's Reverse Big Bang. You can find more information on it here, including the world download, content warnings, how-to-play guide, and a video showcase for anyone who can't or doesn't want to play through it themselves.
As part of the event I had the honor of working with two INCREDIBLE writers, Sparrow @erstwhilesparrow and Writer @capriciouswriter207!! Both of them did a masterful job bringing this story to life in a new medium, and I'm delighted that I got to have them on my team <3 Check out their fics:
branches, but softer by sesquidpedalian
The things Martyn carries with him have dwindled to almost nothing. One bucket that he doesn’t dare abandon to the capricious shadows, a handful of glass bottles. A scrap of banner that he keeps in his pocket, that he wipes his sweat on but never without feeling a little bad. If it’s the tunnels themselves that are responsible for all his misfortune, they never make a sound to suggest so. If this place is haunted, it’s not haunted by any ghosts but his own.
What happens below (none will ever know) by Writer207
The enchanter must be protected at all costs. Away from prying eyes, deep below the ground, nobody but Ren will ever lay their eyes on it again. A labyrinth of dirt and stone must be dug to further protect it. The process weighs heavily on Martyn, and the tunnels themselves seem to suffocate him. It's all worth it, though. The enchanter must be safe.
Thank you, and enjoy <3

Hermit-a-Day May, Day 22: Iskall85. Today's style/medium is Minecraft map art! This is because I wanted to make Iskall's portrait with as much diorite as humanly possible. The entirety of the background (except for the green) and most of his face? Yep, that's all diorite. I think I'm very funny. Details, materials, and screenshots under the read more!
Materials: Krita (for the base art), Rebane2001's MapartCraft site (available here), a Minecraft superflat world, a structure block, and way, way too much time spent trying to get the orientation and placement of the art to line up with the map borders. Structure blocks are weird, y'all. This tutorial by PuffingFish HQ was very helpful for figuring out how to access the file in the first place.
Tumblr media
This is probably the earliest I've ever been done with my art this month, and it still took longer than it should have, due to various technical difficulties. That's probably because this piece is rather simple, but I refuse to feel bad about that because it was for the bit, y'know? Also don't ask me what's going on with his left eye because I don't know either. It just felt right.
The first time I loaded the structure into Minecraft, I just burst out laughing because it looks. Ridiculous and slightly terrifying, honestly. Diorite eldritch horror and/or biblically accurate angel.
Side note, my apologies if the images' alt text isn't useful or if it makes no sense--I honestly have no idea how to describe these in a helpful way.

What I love about MCSM is that it takes the meta conventions of the game and makes it textual in an Eldridge Horror style way.
What if there actually was a block that could warp and control all of reality. What would you do with that much power? Would you use it for good or selfish reasons?
What if there were portals that took you to different worlds? Would it be fun, or would it be terrifying that you’d never find a way back home?
What if you spawned on a skyblock challenge map and had no concept that the world exists below you?
What if you could die again and again and there were no repercussions? And what if in that world an authoritarian government forced you to become a gladiator?
What if you spawned in the word with the powers of an Admin and could literally reshape the world to your selfish whims?
What would the implications of a real mob grinder be?
What are the implications that exploring the world beyond your initial spawn results in updated things that you’ve never seen before? Would it be better to be an explorer or would you rather hunker down in a permanent home where everything was safe?
What if an Eldridge god literally buried the entire world in darkness forcing you to fend for yourself amid the hybrid of mobs that naturally generate in the dark?
What if someone stole your skin and wore it to pretend to be you?
Like all of these things are Minecraft things fans do. You can change your default skin. You can build mob grinders. You can use command blocks and admin controls to reshape the world. Updating versions allows for new terrain to generate. You can play in spleef and skyblock challenges. You can play on different servers with different rules to your own world.
What makes MCSM so great is that they don’t try to explain who the Piglins are, or why there are so many Zombies, or anything. They just treat Minecraft’s weird mechanics and rules as FACT, and build the story around the things we as players DO with those facts.
And they treat them completely straight and not as gimmicks. THAT is the power of MCSM. That is why this series has outlasted Legends and Dungeons. THAT is why fans like this series. Like… They don’t have to explain why a crafting table works, it just does because it’s Minecraft and that’s how crafting tables work in Minecraft!

So, for all of y'all who aren't familiar with Dwarf Fortress, I'm going to explain why it's such a phenomenal game.
Dwarf Fortress is a colony simulator that's been developed by two brothers since 2003. A few weeks ago, it finally released on Steam with a UI that even i can understand. It is the grandfather of things like Rimworld and Minecraft.
So what makes it different from all of the other games in the genre? What makes it different is that it simulates a world beyond your colony. A world with gods, monsters, civilizations... a whole history outside of your colony. A real, living world for you to play in.
I can better explain this by showing y'all what happened to my latest fortress. The one that experienced Wereanteater Armageddon.
My dwarves were having a nice time. I'd just figured out how to build instruments and was outfitting the new tavern properly when-
Tumblr media
Surprise! Wereanteater.
Said wereanteater eventually turned back into a goblin and ran off-map, but not before infecting some of my dwarves. Which led to... well...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Absolute massacres every month. With more wereanteaters each time. Which eventually led to...
Tumblr media
One lone dwarf, haunted by the ghost of one of the many slain, sitting next to the werecorpse of his last companion. They'd fought to the death the moment they'd last transformed, and he was the survivor. But, of course, he couldn't move.
So! That was that. Fortress destroyed, time to move on. I abandoned the fortress and decided to start anew.
But! Where did our wereanteater come from? What was his story?
In Dwarf Fortress, everything has a story.
So before starting a new fortress, I went ahead and checked the Legends mode: the mode that has the whole history of everyone and everything written out for the player to read.
First, I found my fortress' record, and I scanned down to where the deaths began.
Tumblr media
There we go... the attack started with a goblin named Azstrog Terrorhymed. Who is that? Why does he turn into a monstrous anteater?
Tumblr media
Here he is, in his entry, biting my dwarf. And... actually beating her to death with Sensedterror Explained, which another entry says is a book he wrote. About some sort of horror-pit he had a nightmare about. Huh.
Tumblr media
And looking further back, we can see that, about twenty five years before he came to my fortress, he profaned the Abbey of Shafts in a settlement called Gearedopened. Possibly due to having some bad experiences with gambling and false friendships. This resulted in someone called Ngalak cursing him to become a wereanteater every full moon. And who is Ngalak?
Tumblr media
Ngalak is apparently a dwarven god associated with caverns and mountains. And also:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Azstrog wasn't the only creature he's cursed with wereform for profanity! There are at least two others potentially running around. So that's... comforting.
And as for Azstrog? His entry says that he settled in the Fair Mines after dooming my fortress. Checking that entry, we find it to be a lair. A lair that now contains a wereanteater. A wereanteater who was once a goblin who seemed down on his luck and, in a moment of forgetting himself, ended up the object of divine wrath. Which in turn led to the violent deaths of about fifty dwarves in the fortress of Knowring twenty five years later!
This is why Dwarf Fortress is so amazing! There are plenty of games that will introduce an obstacle for your characters to face, but how many will ensure that that obstacle had a whole life of his own prior to ever meeting you?
On second thought, I think I'll reclaim Knowring, rather than starting a new fortress. And I'll bury its many dead, take over its workshops, and see if I can find the Fair Mines.
See if I can find Azstrog Terrorhymed again. See if he's still alive, or if he's met his end one way or another.
But first: time to build dozens of tombs!

no no there's something in that. hang on, let me try and grasp the thought. Joe's builds reach into the minutia - they are a study of what was, and what is. they are replicas built in absolutes - malicious compliance to reference texts. the castle walls must align with reality, or something will be lost. something something Plato's forms and the idea of art as imitations striving for unreachable perfection.
cleo's builds reach into the minutia too, but in a different way. Cleo reached for the human minutia - letting minecraft be lived in and letting spaces breathe. Cleo deals in stories, rather than blueprints, mapping out murders and battles and weddings.
they started season nine in a set of ruins and a haunted house. Joe haunted with architecture, Cleo armour-standed the dead. time is static at cleo's ruins, the petrified statues forever frozen, and history forever lost. whereas, at the house of horrors, the trees bloom still, and burst into leaf and blossom, falling and decaying as the seasons turn.
Cleo controls the time in their bases, grabbing and freezing a moment in place - be it a flying cannonball, or children being eaten by zoo creatures. Time consumes Joe's bases, ever ticking, ever skipping. And with the passage of time, the haunting grows and the ghost of what used to be grows ever stonger, built on a legacy of iteration
The zombie is frozen in a moment of decay. The ghost slips ever further from temporality. There is a difference between the time of the dead and the undead. the first thing they built together on hermitcraft were the hanging gardens of babylon

I'm so fed up seeing videos about "the downfall of mcyt" or "mcyt history" and then the creator only mentions DSMP and maybe a few youtubers they watched. Like... there. are. so. many. creators. who. counted. or. count. as. mcyt. Here are my thoughts.
There are so, so many who counted, and still so many who count. And yeah, DSMP is an important part of MCYT history, but it's so recent in comparison. Like. Minecraft is a cockroach, it will go through so much shit and still be alive and active. Yes, there are the names who bring or brought down the name of MCYT, but in comparison they've always been such a small part of the community. They need to be remembered for their bad actions, or illegal in some cases, but defining the community by them is not good. Nor is just using one fucking smp.
I have watched, or attempted to watch, those types of videos on the history or the downfall etc., and I always complain internally about it. THERE ARE SO MANY PROMINENT MINECRAFT CONTENT CREATORS THAT FUCKING MADE CONTENT. Some don't make Mc (minecraft) content anymore or they rarely do but it doesn't mean they shouldn't be mentioned. (Yes I know, it's an impossible task to talk about all of them, but mentioning three or four as "the og mcyters" or "the old popular mcyters" just angers me)
DSMP I would say helped with the mc resurgence, but I can say similar to SMP live and SMP earth. I count SMP live as pretty important since I think people started watching the streams and videos from that smp and when DSMP happened people treated the content the same and watched it a lot. People started watching again, then with the boom of content in the covid lockdown people watched more. It wasn't just DSMP though.
Listen if you want to do a video about how DSMP affected you or the minecraft community, sure yeah that's a video to make. If you want to do a video on a specific few ytbers who you watched and how they affected the community yeah sure that's a video to make. To say "these are the three main" that's for you. To you they were the main three. To make the video of "all of mcyt history and mc as a whole" and mention 3 people......... and then DSMP.................... I don't understand you.
I've been a MCYT fan for years and years. As a child and as an adult. From E for everyone videos to watching videos that fucked with my innocence and just exposed me to shit I shouldn't have been watching at the time. Year after year watching different types of videos and different creators. Supporting people and finding out I shouldn't, and supporting people and them being good people. To challenge videos, parkour, adventure maps, droppers, role playing, role playing, let's plays, tutorials, modded content, horror content, hide and seek. So many different types of content exist for mc, and I've been a watcher for a lot of it.
DSMP should not define MCYT. There is too many people who have made content for me to just accept that.
Hold people accountable for their actions, do not define a large community by a few people, and if you want to talk about your favorites affect in the community go right ahead but please don't call them the most popular or most important. Some people might never of heard of them. (I am thinking of the do you know this mcyt blog)
#mcyt#dsmp#smp live#smp earth#Just mcyt as a whole is what im talking about theres so many youtubers out there#im just not up for people minimizing how much mc content exists.#edit: so youre not going to mention hermitcraft or stampy or prestonplays or popularmmos or aphmau or SCOTT SMAJOR or ihascupquake or#or any of the “little” crew or skydoesminecraft or shubble or captain sparklez or hbomb94 or rtgame or jacksucksatlife or amylee33 or Jamal#or wattles or squaishy or bajancanadian or jeromeasf or vikkstar#like yeah you need to mention Technoblade cause hes DSMP and skeppy and Badboyhalo are all that but they HAVE BEEN AROUND FOR FOREVER#techno gets the best commentary on him since you know#like so many of the hermitcraft people as well are so og mcyt to me and NOTHING is usually said about them#like fucking ldshadowlady and smallishbeans are also so og and scott and seepeekay and oli and like that crazy craft smp is so old so good#ssundae too im literally going through doyouknowthismcyt queue sheet for these names and i feel insane please please please talk about more#fucking mcyters then the dsmp ones i have fondish memories of dsmp dont hate on me but there is so much more you can talk about in videos#i feel so repetitive but i needed to express my thoughts on it#edit edit YEAH HOLD ON I FORGOT TO MENTION WHAT ABOUT THE OTHER FUCKING LANGUAGES AND COUNTRIES#theres other countries and other fucking languages people made mc content in i forgot about it for a sec#yeah they are definitely never mentioned

Minecraft and brotherly bonding
So. I was watching hermitcraft and I had a realization about mourning dove Danny.
Minecraft would be perfect for him.
Now Iv played Minecraft every once in a while when I was younger, but I mostly get my knowledge out of watching people. This is irrelevant.
But one thing I did notice when playing it for myself, especially cus younger me had more trouble with this, was how people interacted with each other. Since the game is much simpler than irl, the “social cues” , or just how people portray how they feel by moving there character, it was much much easier for me to interact with people and know how to react back.
I propose that Minecraft would be a great way to slowly start integrating him back into society. Instead of risking going out at first, they “teach” him about interacting with people, and all the complicated bullshit that comes with it, by letting him play Minecraft online. There’s little to no risk, they can control the environment, and Danny can talk to strangers without them seeing him.
Of course we already know that Danny is working on writing, one of his biggest motivators being to text, and that applies here to. It actually gives him the choice to either type out in chat/with signs, or just with “body language” and both are equally accepted.
Of course, this comes with other benefits. It’s still a game after all, so they have fun as well. Him and Damian have a survival world together where they build stuff together (I imagine that Danny and dami like to just sit together in silence while Damien’s painting/drawing and Danny’s doing needle work:)), it ends up becoming a huge collab project with an entire city in it.
They all occasionally play server games, and they all have one world together, it’s very chaotic but Danny and Dick especially love it. Tim is a red stone GOD, and is teaching Danny, who is surprisingly good at it (you can’t convince me Danny isn’t a genius like the rest of the Fentons). Jason sets up traps to annoy his siblings. Cass just… collects materials. Mines for hours and keeps every. Single. Thing. The rest are terrified of what she will do with them. Steph has made an “empire” out of a village she ransacked, modded it to make all the villagers special and gave them their own names and everything. Duke keeps doing dumb shit just cus he can, like make a turtle farm in the nether or keep a warden as a pet. Babs is off doing her own thing, no one understands her builds but rest assured, it’ll aalll come together eventually. Danny likes to build cozy spaces, or just spaces that have a really good atmosphere in general. Lil builds that are just sprinkled around the map like how there’s always that random hutch in the middle of the woods in horror storys. They are all for random animals he grew attached to, like this one random cow or that squid he saw while walking to Tim’s base. This isn’t enough for a whole batch so here’s a lil muffin instead.
Mourning Dove is an au of Wayne’s Haunted Mansion by @tathartiel set around 4 years in the future. I recommend you read it if you haven’t, it’s adorable and heartbreaking.
