Settler Historians Need More Education, Less Ideology: Rebutting Sean Carleton on Senator Lynn Beyak and Indian Residential Schools
By Michelle Stirling ©2023 Image licensed from Adobe Stock. Have I been “Beyak-ed?” Someone has tried to cancel the publication of this paper which rebuts claims made by Sean Carleton of the University of Manitoba, about a paper that he did about Senator Lynn Beyak’s efforts to have people recognize the enormous good that Indian Residential Schools provided for thousands of children. Yes. Some…

Sex Education (Final season)
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2023
Sex Education (Final season, 2023, UK)
Creator: Laurie Nunn
Directors: Dominic Leclerc, Michelle Savill & Alyssa McClelland
Mini-review:
Wow, it feels kinda weird knowing that we won't be seeing these characters again. This final season wasn't perfect, but it wrapped everything in a way that felt absolutely satisfying for me. Yes, I know some fans are very angry about certain things, but I dunno, it all felt completely true to the characters, something that is always key for a finale. If anything, my biggest complaint is that the show clearly struggles when it comes to handling and connecting so many characters and storylines. That already happened during the previous season, but I think the show's team had an even harder time with this one, because they needed to provide some form of closure for everybody. Anyway, I expected it to happen, so I got over it pretty quickly. I want to end this review by reminding everyone of how groundbreaking this show is. It basically set new standards when it comes to inclusivity and representation in mainstream television. Although it only premiered four years ago, its impact on the industry has already been incredible and undeniable. So, yeah, this was a flawed but satisfying final season, and Sex Education will be deeply missed.

read with saumya <3
When He Was Wicked ; by Julia Quinn
★★★★☆ out of ★★★★★
( read: 4.5 stars out of 5 )
REVIEW:
absolutely loved this book omg!!! hands down one of the best regency romances I've read, such good writing and definitely the best bridgerton novel.
the love michael has for francesca is so deep and so gutting its impossible to even imagine him with anyone else. and how fran's feelings transform from thinking him as a friend to someone she can't keep his hands off of to someone she's absolutely in love with is beautiful ❤️❤️
their love and guilt for john is so present and so realistically portrayed, loved it!! the love scenes are also something else in this one like wow damn🤭🤌🏼
i loved the dynamic between violet and francesca, it was so🥺❤️ especially in the second epilogue❤️❤️❤️
i do have a few problems tho, I didn't like the implication that michael is pretty clearly a colonizer, like I think that couldve been easily omitted idk why its kept in😭
i wish we couldve seen more of when michel fell in love with fran, maybe one or two flashback chapters?
other than this i really love this book!! sm better than the other parts haha
and so good it pulled me out of my reading slump WE'RE BACK TO FINISHING A BOOK IN A DAY WOOHOO (tho i wish i didnt start in the middle of exams lmao)
as for the adaptation, i have hope for michaela and francesca even tho i feel like the entire plot will most probably have to be changed, and i love michael v dearly so it would be a little sad to not see him on screen. but the books will always exist and we can just view the two as different pieces of art <33 (hoping, wishing, praying they do this with eloise's storyline as well)
In every life there is a turning point. A moment so tremendous, so sharp and clear that one feels as if one’s been hit in the chest, all the breath knocked out, and one knows, absolutely knows without the merest hint of a shadow of a doubt that one’s life will never be the same. For Michael Stirling, that moment came the first time he laid eyes on Francesca Bridgerton.
Where’s that new earl of yours?” My, she was blunt. “He’s not my earl,” Francesca pointed out. “Well, he’s more yours than anyone else’s.”
Why? It’s because I love you, damn me to hell. Because I’ve always loved you. Because I loved you when you were with John, and I loved you when I was in India, and God only knows I don’t deserve you, but I love you, anyway.
This thing between them, this bond—it wasn’t just passion, and it wasn’t wicked. It was love, and it was divine.
Thank you, Michael, for letting my son love her first.

I've just had the weirdest bridgerton theory come to me - I saw a post earlier that they are potentially working on a queer storyline and my brain has been working.
What if the queer storyline is Francesca? BOOK SPOILERS AHEAD!!?
So if you've read the books, you'll know that Francesca's first husband sadly dies early on in their marriage. What if instead of getting Michael Stirling, we get a Michelle Stirling? (Or any other female name equivalent - Michelle was the first that came to me). In theory, Francesca would be a wealthy widow and able to support herself so we wouldn't necessarily have to have her get married again to support herself or her partner?
Just think about the queer pining we would get if they had it exactly the same but gender swap Michael. Francesca marrying their cousin (or they could even make John siblings with them)
Am I crazy or would this low-key be really good?

put your music library on shuffle and write down the first line of the first ten songs that play, post the poem that results
Thanks for the tag! @sailor-aviator 🩵
My words are wrapped in barbed wire
Draw the cat eye, sharp enough to kill a man
Remember when you said it
Truth is I never thought of us together
You don't pay rent, but you stay in my head
If I totaled my emotions like a car crash on the 5
Do I tell you I love you or not?
Through the wire, through the wire, through the wire
Don’t need a hero to save me
It’s an empty shell I live in

Models vs Reality: COVID - Climate Disastrous Public Policies. FreedomTalk April 2022
Models vs Reality: COVID – Climate Disastrous Public Policies. FreedomTalk April 2022
I was pleased to present at FreedomTalk in the spring of 2022. Many people have noticed the curious overlap of various aspects of both COVID and climate ideology and propaganda. I looked at the problems of using ‘models’ (sophisticated mathematical computer simulations) for both. I promised to post the power point so that people could review the links. My presentation starts about 1:22:00 after…

location : mimi's apartment, east village, manhattan.
featuring : max @orumad
it's nine o'clock, which means it's love island time — they’ve settled into a routine, almost boring in how clockwork it’s become, max settled into the sofa at her side like a lap dog, while she applies a final coat of shellac to her nails — but rather than crank up the volume and whip up the twitter app, mimi's decided that now is the perfect time to pick at scabs. “ babe… ” she begins, voice measured, fixing a diamante gem to the centre of her ring finger as ian stirling’s voice cuts across the sitting room. her sitting room, which recently he’s been treating less like a place of worship and more like a five guys drive thru. “ you know when you have a bath ? ” in my bath, she wants to add. my lovingly selected claw - footed victorian bath. “ it’s fiiiiine if you want to like, smoke a doob, check out of the stratosphere, whatever, but can you maybe like, not leave your gross ass cigarette butts all over the veneer ? because it’s bugging me out. ” examining her nails, she presses the final diamante into place, pants a series of warm little breaths against their tips, and once she’s satisfied they’re dry, links her fingers through max's, knocking his phone from his hand. “ and i think we should do a social media detox, too. it’ll be good to get back to basics. remind of us what’s important. ” remind him that she's important. in other words ; stop fucking messaging michelle. mimi forces a grin, turning her gaze on him, eyes scanning over his features. he could do with a shave, too. looks kinda like she found him shelling peanuts at a yard sale, and took pity enough to bring him home. she gets that he's got his whole 'loose, lusty, and unbothered rocker' thing, but she's got standards ( a laminated list of them, in fact ). her lips connect with his jaw, pressing a kiss there, and she startles back with a performative little yelp. “ ooh. scratchy. ” hand ruffling through his hair, she reaches for the remote.
#she thinks she's sm better than him and it shows !!#mimi & max.#this is so evil gf coded i hate it bt i love it#⥂ mimi martínez. ╱ threads.

Sam Claflin + well developed female characters
I once posted a list of Sam's female-directed films [x], but as @jesstasticvoyage points out, it's also true that a lot of stuff he stars in features well developed female characters (I'm kinda tired of the "strong female character" phrase, so using this one instead). So, let's have a look at them.
The Hunger Games series (dir Francis Lawrence) - still the most obvious example for Sam as a role he's known for, and the purpose of this post. It's safe to say most people know Katniss Everdeen.
Their Finest (dir Lone Scherfig) - Gemma Arterton's character, Catrin, is an aspiring screenwriter hired to work on a script for a film about Dunkirk evacuation--this is a movie about a movie set during WW2. Sam is a fellow writer, in fact he is the one who discovered her. It's funny bc this takes place in 1940s and she gets the job of writing female characters, when even in our times we don't always have that. Worth noting is also Rachael Stirling's Phyl, a minor character but memorable and a lesbian--who doesn't die at the end. It's the straight relationship that gets treated like bury your gays trope this time!
The Nightingale (dir Jennifer Kent) - also known as the film in which Sam plays an absolute monster (you think Billy Dunne is bad, lol). The film centres on young convict Claire (Aisling Franciosi) seeking revenge for the indescribable harm done to her family. Basically, trigger warning for everything.
My Cousin Rachel (dir Roger Michell) - adaptation of Daphne du Maurier's novel. Sam plays Philip, the narrator, but Rachel is so intriguing, the whole story is named for her. She's played by her namesake, Rachel Weisz. There's also Louise (Holliday Granger), Philip's childhood friend. She's the relatable, girl next door type, but she is smart, in fact I think she is the one with the most braincells. (Also I have a theory about her, I think this version of Louise has a darker side!)
Enola Holmes (dir Harry Bradbeer) - title speaks for itself. Enola's mother is missing and the teenage heroine goes on a quest to find her and thus becomes a detective herself. Sam plays Mycroft, the eldest Holmes sibling, though he's far removed from the original Mycroft Holmes of Arthur Conan Doyle's books. Edith, who runs a teashop, is another notable female character.
Adrift (dir Baltasar Kormakur) - based on a true story of Tami Oldham, an amateur sailor, surviving 41 days adrift on the Pacific Ocean after a hurricane. Sam plays her bf Richard. Shailene Woodley has the role of Tami and is also the film's producer.
Riot Club (dir Lone Scherfig) - okay so what's this doing here, you ask, it's a film about an all-male elite club at Oxford. Yes but that's exactly the point, bc even though it is about an all male club, the female characters are surprisingly well developed. The play this is adapted from, Posh, was written by Laura Wade and the director is also a woman, so maybe it's not so surprising. We have Holliday Granger who plays the gf of one of the boys and Jessica Brown Findlay in the role of the pub landlord's daughter. Holliday's character certainly doesn't take any shit from the posh boys. Even Natalie Dormer in the role of a sex worker has enough self-respect to refuse their deranged requests, despite the amount of money it would earn her. Hence I include it on the list.
Charlie's Angels (dir Elizabeth Banks) - title speaking for itself, yet again. Sam's role is relatively minor.
Book of Love (dir Analeine Cal y Mayor) - a romcom. When Maria, played by Veronica Echegui, translates Henry's (Sam) unsuccessful book from English to Spanish, the book becomes a huge hit in Mexico. Turns out that while translating, she inserted some seriously hot steamy scenes. Sam travels to Mexico for promotion and the two of them now have to work together on the next book. So without Maria, the story would not exist and also, once Henry accepts the situation, he is happy to collaborate with her--and at the end, supports her in her own writing efforts. (If you can get round the premise, it is an enjoyable film.)
Daisy Jones and the Six - mini series based on a book of the same name. We have not one, not two, not three, but four amazing ladies to root for: Daisy, Camila, Karen and Simone. While Sam gives performance of a lifetime as the band's frontman Billy Dunne.
Other Notes:
Honourable mentions are Snow White (Kristen Stewart) in Snow White and the Huntsman, a film I have a definite soft spot for though there's many ways it could have been better. In The Corrupted Sam plays a convict who just got out of prison and reunites with his gf and son. The gf is played by Naomi Ackie. She's wary at first but does allow him back into her life and they get back together and raise their son. Unsure if another one of my faves, Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides apply. Sam's romance with the mermaid Syrena is my absolute favourite of his. She might seem helpless for majority of her screentime, bc she gets captured, turns human on dry land and is unable to walk as she's not used to having legs, Philip (Sam's character) has to carry her. But she was the one who saved him first. And POTC overall is not without good female characters.

Thoughts on Bridgerton Season 3, Part 2:
1. KANTHONY MY BELOVED WELCOME HOME. Also we are all gonna agree to retcon the India thing, right? Kate looks way too pregnant to make that journey and also like I really don’t think it makes sense for Anthony as a character either to do it *right this second*. And this brings me to my second thing:
2. The timeline of these pregnancies, man. Why is Kate so visibly pregnant while Prudence and Phillipa are not? There’s one shot in Episode 8 that makes Prudence look pregnant but otherwise nothing. And I’m going to assume that Penelope got pregnant during the mirror incident if all three Featherington babies look to be roughly the same age. And also based on that scene in Queen Charlotte of Violet with two small children I assume Daphne was pregnant all last season? Does pregnancy take less time in this show or something? Are all the men sharpshooters? Like what is this?
3. I’m intrigued by the existence of Michaela. Mostly because I think it could mean that autistic king John Stirling is going to live and Fran gets to have her two fave people by her side always. But we shall see. I do think When He Was Wicked is probably the most gender-dependent plot line in the books (infertility, Kilmartin succession, remarriage, even Michael contracting malaria while in the military, etc) so I’m curious how they will handle that. So RIP Michael but welcome Michaela (I feel like Michelle would be a more era appropriate name but what do I know)
4. There’s no way in hell Benedict isn’t next. Masquerade next season? Come on. The real question is will they do the An Offer From A Gentleman time jump (I know how they can do it if anyone at Netflix wants to give me a ring even though Jess Brownell said a lot of the eps are written already) or will they condense everything to one season (because if so, lame)
5. Marcus is a completely empty character and if he’s going to stick around I’m gonna need a reason to like him because right now his whole personality seems to be “man Violet can date” (but so glad that they addressed Lady Danbury’s affair with Lord Ledger)
6. I also thought it hilarious that they kept explaining where Kate and Anthony were and yet no one said *a word* about Daphne or Simon. My personal head canon that no one asked for is that at some point between S1 and now Simon joined the military and fought at Waterloo while Daph was with the children in Belgium because god damnit I *will* bring in one historically accurate thing to this show!
7. All in all, enjoyed this half much more, they should’ve named a different episode Romancing Mr. Bridgerton because it didn’t work for 6 (5 would’ve probably been the better option), and I can’t believe we are stuck waiting two years for the next season.
