Michael and Kit: Making New Choices

This is a continuation of this post where I was talking about my thoughts about Kit and Jentry's dynamic in the show. (I finally finished the season) I need to re-watch the series again sometime soon because I'm so fascinated by the Episode 5.

The show sets up Michael and Kit as parallels from the start of the episode which is such a fun choice because they ended the episode before with this legitimately creepy scene of Kit pulling his skin back on. There was a chance for the tone of the show to really change there but the show immediately contextualizes how it wants us to view Kit by showing him in parallel with Michael.

Both of them are teenagers (or young at the very least) waking up to go to school, getting closer to Jentry but also trying to establish some sense of self identity and sufficiency. Michael is trying to balance meeting his parents expectations, against a desire to try something new and possibly divert from a path that he's been on for a long time. There's a sort of conservatism (not politically necessarily but in the way parents will often uphold traditional values and institutions) that we can see in some of the adult characters in the show like Michael's parents and Gugu, and it really pushes back on the teenage characters when they try to change.

Kit is somewhat different in that his deal with Mr. Cheng seems much more recent and his "parents" are just puppets for Mr. Cheng, but what is Mr. Cheng if not the oldest, most controlling adult on this show. A man so caught up in what he believes is good for his child that he attempted to kill a teenage girl several times just to drag his daughter kicking and screaming out of an afterlife she was at peace with.

It's so interesting to me that both Kit and Michael are struggling with asserting themselves and taking control of their decisions and basically all of the people in their lives except for Jentry are advising them to basically stick to what is easiest (i.e. the path that has been decided for them). It's a big part of Jentry's personal journey as well after all.

I mean, a lunch lady basically talks to both Kit and Michael about the importance of making their own choices and how other people will keep making choices for them if they don't. However that scene starts with the lunch lady explicitly refusing Michael's attempt to make a new choice.

There's a consistent pressure that we see pushing back on Michael when he attempts to change- his parents, Stella, the lunch lady. Everyone around him is so used to him following the script that it's genuinely baffling to them when he doesn't. Jentry, who is a person Michael has known a long time but who has been away long enough that they're still getting used to each other again, is the one relationship pushing him to change. In the episode its Jentry's text that tells us Michael was even considering trying out for band! Meanwhile for Kit there's a pressure there from Mr. Cheng but its actually easier for him to make the specific choice not to hurt Jentry. Mr. Cheng (or more specifically the Mogui) don't give up on having Kit do what they want but they only step back because they have enough knowledge about the systems in place to know that things will work out badly for Kit. Mr. Cheng knows that Kit and Jentry won't work because Kit has been lying to Jentry the entire time, and because Kit is making a decision not to hurt Jentry specifically (instead of say a choice to not hand over the powers) eventually Kit finds himself in a situation where giving the powers to Mr. Cheng feels like the easiest choice, the only choice.

Why the Altmeri Commentary on Talos is Important to Lore Discussion (Even if It Isn't the Thalmor's End Goal) 

Originally posted on r/teslore three years ago. To be clear, important in this context means if you're trying to guess where TES might go in the future. And as the years go by, and we now have an almost complete turn-over of developers at Bethesda, it may be less relevant. Still, the new developers will have all these old ideas to rummage through.

This begins with a split among fans, though I don't think it has to be a nasty split. There is a very strong opinion in /r/teslore that Out-of-Game texts are valid if you want them to be, if you find them interesting enough for your Tamriel. And there's another very strong opinion that only official lore is really valid for theorizing. To be completely honest, we all probably dabble in one or the other at different times. Sometimes we are more creative and speculatory about Tamriel, other times we are arguing out the Lowest Common Denominator of agreed-upon lore. (It's never actually agreed upon, but that's part of the fun.)

But there's a third possibility: examining Out of Game texts for the perspective they can give us on In-game lore. A really good example of how this works would be the document: On the Nords' Totem Religion. It was a design document for Skyrim which was not incorporated into the game directly. However, the document gives a lot of insight into the little we do see in Skyrim of the ancient Nord religion. It is useful in interpreting the game itself.

It's also useful for going forward. When ESO returned to Skyrim this year, we could bet that the devs would be taking a closer look at the local religion, as they had in Elsweyr last year. And we could also guess that they might turn to that unofficial Skyrim design document which best explained the original ideas for the Nord religion. As of a few weeks ago, much of the Totem Religion document's lore has been added to the official lore as in-game books in ESO.

The totem religion document is as uncontroversial example of this process as you can find. Most everyone in lore circles has regarded it as a very useful document. You won't find that agreement about all OOG unofficial writings. But I'd like to make the argument for why the Altmeri Commentary on Talos is worth knowing and discussing even if you don't end up thinking it's true.

So, I'll begin with quoting the whole thing. It's pretty short.

What appears to be an Altmeri commentary on Talos To kill Man is to reach Heaven, from where we came before the Doom Drum's iniquity. When we accomplish this, we can escape the mockery and long shame of the Material Prison. To achieve this goal, we must: 1) Erase the Upstart Talos from the mythic. His presence fortifies the Wheel of the Convention, and binds our souls to this plane. 2) Remove Man not just from the world, but from the Pattern of Possibility, so that the very idea of them can be forgotten and thereby never again repeated. 3) With Talos and the Sons of Talos removed, the Dragon will become ours to unbind. The world of mortals will be over. The Dragon will uncoil his hold on the stagnancy of linear time and move as Free Serpent again, moving through the Aether without measure or burden, spilling time along the innumerable roads we once travelled. And with that we will regain the mantle of the imperishable spirit.

What it doesn't say: Nowhere does it say it's a Thalmor document. Nowhere does it mention the Towers. Those two points are pretty well-known in lore circles, but they come up enough to make it worthwhile to point out.

Second thing to notice: its date.

It doesn't have an exact date; the old forums have been deleted. But we do see that it was re-posted on the Imperial Library on 09/19/2010, the year before Skyrim came out. This important detail is glossed over in a lot of the discussion of its relevance. It is not a document written after Skyrim trying to put a creative spin on some details in-game. It's a document published before Skyrim came out, and hence a window on the discussions that were going on in the development of Skyrim. We need to look at the stuff in Skyrim with the question: Does the Altmeri commentary shed any light on what's going on here?

Well, the fact that the Altmeri Commentary suggests that Talos needs to be erased from the mythic makes it very relevant. Maybe this is not the reason for the Thalmor's Talos ban in the game that eventually was released. But it's evidence that during the development of Skyrim, the reason was being kicked around by someone in discussions with the devs. It's that context that finally informs the two lines in-game that might refer back to the Commentary.

The first and most often quoted is Ancano's boast:

You think I can't destroy you? The power to unmake the world at my fingertips, and you think you can do anything about it?

It's pointed out that he can simply be boasting of his power there, without any reference to a supposed greater plan. And yes, that's true. But remember, we aren't interpreting that line in a vacuum. There was a development-related post that brought up a fanatical Altmer idea of unmaking the world before Skyrim, and it's just a coincidence that a fanatic Thalmor member boasts of having the power to do so in the game? These things have nothing to do with each other?

And then there is the other line from Esbern which I think is even more significant.

I don't suppose they want the world to end any more than we do. Or at least, they'd prefer it to end on their terms.

Esbern's statement does not confirm this is the Thalmor's plan. What it does is confirm that the idea this is the Thalmor's plan exists in-universe. And Esbern is not some random conspiracist; he's a lore-master. Dragons were his hobby but we also know from his dossier that the Thalmor consider him responsible for two of the most damaging operations on Dominion soil. He knows his stuff when it comes to the Thalmor. His opinion may be affected by paranoia, he may not even hold the opinion very strongly (suggested by how he corrects himself there), but he is not some random guy in the pub with a conspiracy theory about the Thalmor. If it's a conspiracy theory, it's an important one in-universe.

So, we have a timeline that suggests the Commentary is important, and two references in the game of Skyrim to the idea presented in the Commentary. The references are independent, coming from ideological enemies, Ancano and Esbern. I'd say that makes a very strong case for the Commentary's ideology existing within the universe.

If this concept exists within the universe, the Commentary is important even if it does not represent the Thalmor's ultimate goal accurately.

But where does one go with that? With Michael Kirkbride's historic and ongoing influence on the TES franchise, elements of the Commentary are quite likely to make it into future games. On the other hand, the Commentary may be a window on an idea in development that was tossed around and ultimately abandoned. Maybe it's not Thalmor belief, really. It could even be Blades propaganda. Maybe Ancano believes in it, but he's actually a fanatic who's out of step with the Thalmor in general. etc. etc. etc.

Acknowledging that an Out-of-Game source is relevant does not mean accepting it as the Truth Bound To Be Revealed by TES VI. TES fandom has had enough of that over-certainty already. I think we've all met someone who takes some random developer's post as The Gospel Truth that cannot be questioned. That's frustrating, for sure. But let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater. It doesn't make sense to ignore it completely in discussions about the Thalmor's ultimate goal. There are enough sources to make it worth looking at, both inside and outside the universe.

This post was about the relevance of the Commentary, but if you're interested in how the Commentary's ideology could function within the Thalmor, I can never recommend enough this old /r/teslore post: Analyzing the Altmeri Commentary on Talos.

Additional reply in comments: I thought I'd hedged enough on my statement. I won't claim Esbern as an expert on the Thalmor's ontological goals, although he definitely is more knowledgable about the Thalmor than the random guy at the pub. I do think, however, that his statement confirms that some people within the universe think this is the Thalmor's end goal. I see his statement there as he's not certain himself of it.

In the comments of the original post, a user who has since deleted their account posted a very interesting timeline of the development under discussion. I also recommend this discussion with Misticsan about the post and whether fans give the Commentary undue importance in contrast to other sources on the Thalmor.

This was only the beginning of a very involved journey into the weird fandom status of the Altmeri Commentary and the Towers Theory. It's a lengthy saga, and I've put off formatting it for tumblr but I do mean to eventually copy all the teslore posts over here.

In my opinion the art is beautiful and hurts no one, I don't believe it deserved that reply on twitter. What bothers me is the comments and theories. What is crazy to me is calling anyone who doesn't believe Michael and David are dating a homophobic. Also the whole "Michael never called Anna his wife" yeah because they're partners, not married. They've dated women as far as we know all their lives. Again, they also quote all the sexual comments Michael and David make to eachother as proof that they're dating.

There's also a very amusing comment that I must highlight: "They deliberately cropped a photo to just include David and Georgia, and ignored the "Michael is my work wife" quote by david in order to fit their narrative that Dt and Gt are in love."

I found it funny because they do the same. They ignore the many posts with their children looking happy, the videos with anna and georgia looking in love, doing stuff together, the quotes of them praising anna and georgia in interviews, talking about how much they love them and their kids, and only focus on the comments/pics/videos of Michael and David talking about each other 😂 why can't both loves coexist?? Why can't they be in a loving poly relationship? Why can't they be in love with their partners and just have a close friendship with one another? No, the only option they entertain in their brains is "gay couple/affair"? And we're the ones who are homophobic and close minded? So before they met they were doing what for years and years? Pretending to be in love and having kids "just cause"? 3 of the kids were born after they met on go if I'm not mistaken so how does that fit the timeline? 😂 I'm not gonna get into having sex just for making babies cause next thing we know we are demanding celebrities to make sex tapes each time they do it to prove it to us \0_0/

I'm not saying them being in a romantic relationship with each other is impossible. As a bi woman, i never assume anyone's sexuality. But when you have female partners, and fall for a male, that's called being bi! I'm sorry everyone but these men are not gay as in homosexual! They can very much be bisexual and believe me, if they one day came out I would be the first person to say: they were right, we were wrong!

But please, don't be someone who simply denies bisexuality to exist. Anyone of any gender can be bi and be in a monogamous relationship, a poly relationship, with both men and women. It doesn't invalidate or make the other relationship less than!

My opinions aside, their sexuality is none of our business. Sure, I know fans like to speculate and I understand it, but we can't simply choose one option and claim it as reality above all else and brush off the other ones. We don't know what goes on behind closed doors so it's really dumb to claim we do based off of the little we see on tv/social media! - and yes I am including my view as well! By the little I see, they can be 2 happy straight couples, a poly quadruple (sorry if that's not the term), a bi couple (ignoring the ladies), but what they 100% are is 4 friends who love eachother and seen to be quite happy. And I'm very happy about that too.

Also you're so right. There are a multitude of reasons the photo could have been cropped as well. When you post specifically about a couple you probably want the photo to be...well...about that couple. It's not that hard to figure out. There's a really funny thing here, where they say they're trying to make David and Georgia seem in love. There's no seem. They are in love here. I hate it when people pull this shit because what in the hell do you mean seem?! Things could be different if they were shit talking (joking doesn't count, bc if we wanna bring up jokes David and Michael have made about each other then we can, I'll be overjoyed.) or getting a divorce, but every indication they have they just completely made up.

Summary: Grace Mallory makes a reluctant Billy Butcher and The Boys team up with an MI6 operative sent over from London to track down a dangerous supe killing people on both sides of the pond. Billy is being his usual arsehole self but maybe opposites attract?

“Right”, Butcher says, “Frenchie and Hughie, I need you two to sweep the office for bugs. Just to make sure we’re not being fucked by our own side. Until it’s clean, not a word of this inside that building. Get on it.” 

Frenchie gives a sloppy salute and starts off at a jog back towards the Flatiron, Hughie and Kimiko in tow.

“Edwards, have you got access to the CCTV footage of the attacks on the PM and the Chief of the Defence staff?”

“Not yet,” Eve replies, “I’m working on it, my CO at Vauxhall will send it over as soon as he has it.”

“Can you trust him?” Butcher asks. 

“Yes, Cochran’s reliable.” 

Butcher nods and looks over at MM. “I need you to ask around our connections, discreetly, for any word on the attacks on the two US politicians. You know the drill, no traces.”

“Sure thing, Butcher,” MM replies, “I’ll get on it straight away. You wanna bring Mallory in on this too? She’s got the best connections and you know this kinda fucked up shit is generating a lot of buzz that she’ll hear.” 

“No, I need to see Mallory about some other business, I’ll see what she knows, if she’s got the same info Edwards does.”

“Do you want me to come with you to see Mallory?” Eve asks. 

“Get that CCTV footage, that’s your priority, Edwards. It’s still office hours in the UK, get on to your CO and get that footage before this cunt supe kills someone else. I’ll ring ya when the office is clean.” 

Eve nods, “Keep me posted.” She raises her hand in a wave to MM and leaves them in the park. 

“Do you trust her, MM?” Butcher asks, watching Edwards retreating back as she makes her way to the subway.

“No more or less than I would any other government agent.”

“Ye, we’re gonna need to keep an eye on her, see what her game is.” 

“Does it make a difference that she’s British, Butcher?” MM asks. 

“Na, MI6 or CIA, they’re pretty much all the same type of cunts. And with her background…” he trails off, still watching Edwards. “I’m not sure Mallory clocked it but Edwards and I don’t exactly speak the same type of English, you know wha’ I mean?” 

“Yeah, you sound like Michael Caine, she sounds like Lady Mary Crawley.”

“She’s posh alright, probably went to Cambridge and got recruited to the service straight from the local Tory meetings thanks to a tip from a well connected daddy. And I’ve never had any good experiences with blokes of her background, served with a couple of right cunts who thought they could order me and the other lads around just ‘cause we didn’t grow up with bleedin’ silver spoons. But I’ve never served with a woman from that background, had a couple of higher ups of course, but never in the field.” 

MM hunches his shoulders against the creeping cold. “I say we let her prove herself before we make any judgments. At least maybe now you’ll have someone to bitch about American tea with.” 

“Fucking ‘erbal shite.”

Butcher claps MM on the shoulder, “Right, I’m off to see Mallory. Let me know if you dig up something I need to know. I’ll see you at the office later.” 

“See ya, Butcher.” 

Grace Mallory’s house is located in the countryside outside the city, surrounded by forest and hills. The usually lush green drive up to the house is grey and slushy this January afternoon as Butcher approaches the house in his beat up car. Mallory is already at the door, expecting him. 

“Two meetings in one day, William, what an honour,” she says in a dry voice as he walks up to her. She steps aside and lets him in. 

“Well, you set up the first one, and I’m here for some more information about Ms Edwards, so blame yourself,” Butcher says and walks over to the large windows overlooking the hills, trailing slush on the floor. Mallory stops by the fireplace. 

“I know that her CO, James Cochran, wanted her on this case and contacted the CIA Deputy Director directly and arranged for her to be flown over on a military flight. He vouched for her discretion and capabilities and the Deputy Director passed her on to me for the enviable task of convincing you to take her onboard. Cochran has worked with the CIA on multiple occasions and has a solid reputation, we have no reason to doubt his recommendations.” 

“I don’t need her CO’s bloody letter of recommendation,” Butcher scoffs. “I want her background info. Why her on this case? Where has she served and with who? Who’s she connected to? I need to see her bloody file, Mallory.”

“You don’t have that clearance, Butcher,” Mallory sighs. “Your job is to find the supe, with her help. You don’t need to know more about her than what the Deputy Director thinks you need to know.”

“Don’t give me that bullshit, Mallory,” Butcher snarls, “She showed us the videos MI5 picked up. That supe can control anyone to do anything by the looks of it, so I bloody well need know who the fuck I’m letting on to my team.” 

“That doesn’t make any difference, Butcher.”

“The hell it does! I have no doubt she’ll be able to put a bullet in Hughie’s head if he suddenly tries to kill me, but will she? Or will she focus on nabbing the fuckin’ supe alive and get MI6 a new superweapon while me and the boys are tearing each other’s throats out?”

Butcher steps up to Mallory next to the fireplace, staring down at her. “Show me her fuckin’ file, Mallory, or I walk.”

“You walk away from this and you can kiss your budget and office goodbye, Butcher.” 

“We’ve done just fine in underground basements before, I’m sure we can find some new crack den to clear out and use as a base away from the fuckin’ cunts at the CIA.” 

When Mallory doesn’t move Butcher makes for the door, digging up his car keys from the pocket, jangling them loudly.

“Last chance, Mallory. Or you’ll have to explain to the Deputy Director that you lost The Boys.” 

Mallory tilts her head back and looks at the ceiling for a few seconds before cursing under her breath. 

“Wait Butcher, just wait.”

She disappears further into the house and Butcher stops by the door. After a few minutes Mallory returns with a USB stick. 

“This is the file I got from the Deputy Director on Eve Edwards. Parts of it are censored, not my doing, so you’ll need to go higher up to get your answers there. Or ask Edwards directly.” She hands the stick to Butcher who pockets it. 

“Knew you’d get there in the end, Grace,” he replies, giving her his best bullshitting smile. He takes a few steps out of the door but as Mallory is pulling it closed he turns, as an afterthought, and stops her from closing it. 

“By the way, I heard on the radio on my way over that the Speaker of the House died yesterday morning, you wouldn’t know anything about that, would ya?”

“I heard it was lunchtime today,” she replies, “Heart attack.” 

“Oh, was it today? I must’ve misheard it, could’ve sworn it was yesterday,” Butcher walks towards his car again, giving Mallory a wave over his head with his back turned. 

A couple of miles down the road Butcher pulls into a pit stop and pulls out a laptop from under the rubbish littering the back seat. Firing it up he puts the USB from Mallory into the slot and opens the file contained within. He tabs through the first page, past all the standard text about classified information and finds what he’s looking for.

“Fuckin’ the honourable Genevieve Horatia Daphne…” Butcher mumbles darkly as he scans the first page. Her first surname is redacted and he can see that it’s been redacted in several places. He skims through her background, she went to Christchurch College, Oxford, modern languages, was on the college rowing team, the PolSci club, recruited by SIS as intelligence analyst while still at Oxford, recommended by her father, name redacted. She speaks five foreign languages; French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic and Farsi and Butcher makes a mental note to tell Frenchie that she speaks French, just to be safe. Both French and Russian are listed as “native level”. 

Her first foreign posting seems to have been in Chechnya in the late 90’s. She was in Pakistan and Afghanistan in -01 and -02, Iraq in 2003. Injured and on leave for most of 2004, the injury is redacted. He skims through the pages of her history, and starts paying attention when she moves from the SRR to MI6 in 2011 but finds nothing suspicious until he gets to the end of the file and present day events. Big chunks have been redacted and the file stops making sense. The last two pages are wiped completely. 

“Someone made sure Mallory didn’t see this, or wanted to make sure she didn’t pass it on to us,” Butcher thinks. He’s tapping his fingers on the steering wheel, trying to piece together the fragments of the file that haven’t been redacted. Scrolling backwards towards the beginning again he re-reads the file. Something at the back of his brain is itching, he’s missing a detail, and he can feel it trying to break through. He re-reads it again and his eyes catch on her redacted surname and it hits him.

“Why the fuck are they keeping her father’s name secret?” he says out loud in the car. “Who the fuck is her dad?” He scrolls back to the top and sees that her parent’s and brother’s names have been redacted for security reasons. 

Suddenly his phone rings, breaking his train of thought. The display shows Frenchies name and Butcher picks up. 

“ ‘Sup, Frenchie, we clean?” 

“Qui, Monsieur Charcutier, we found nothing, only deux cafards. We can return to the office but we may need to bring gas masks, MM has emptied two cans of Bug-Off in there.”

In the background Butcher can hear Kimiko cough as Hughie yells at MM to open the window before they all die of chemical poisoning.

“I’m on my way back, I’ll ring Edwards and get her back to the office too.”

“She is quite something, Monsieur Charcutier, I did not expect MI6 women to look like this, she is very attractive no?”

“Be careful Frenchie, get too close and she’ll slice your French cock off just like at Agincourt.” 

“Ah non, I will not try anythin’, I am a professional!”

“Right, Frenchie, just keep your game face on. And that reminds me, she speaks French fluently, so mind what you mumble, alright?” 

“Elle parle français aussi? Mon Dieu…”

Butcher hangs up on Frenchie while he’s still speaking and hits the dial on Edward’s number as he shuts down the laptop and starts up the car. She picks up after a couple of rings. 

“Hi Butcher, secure line?” 

“Should be but you never know. You got what we’re after?”

“Yes, he came through for us and sent it over. I’ll bring it over to the office if it’s clear?” 

“No, not yet,” Butcher lies, “I’ll come ‘round your place and we can review it. Should be there in about an hour.”

Eve gives him the address to an apartment hotel downtown and he hangs up.

That is her main mission if henry plans to kill him. she would LIKE to take him home but..... she's old and tired of being alone. if complying a bit means seeing him again, she'd...try. but it's not easy. (tbh them actually bonding in a fucked up way might actually be cute but the outcome is the same.) michael" oooh boy. he did NOT like her at first. too clean and cutesy. anyone who likes his dad SUCKS (besides uncle henry). but as she starts babystting, he realizes that she has a bit of a 'cool babysitter' edge. not telling his parents about minor shit and talking with him instead of shouting or ignoring. she knows that the aftons arent the best parents and is blunt with michael about it. Michael is confused why someone like her still cares about people who arent good parents and he never truly got an answer for that.

post....everything, Michael starts to see her as a second mother but bonbon admittedly doesn't try to keep in touch. michael looks too much like him...but she still tries to have him over from time to time he helps her to make sure her house isn't a total mess.

by the time Michael goes missing, she's already hunting William down with henry, and both beet with Michael again at the same time. he gets the biggest hug but Michael, who was most likely told by Henry her crimes, pushes her away and yells at her that she never truly cared and was just around for his father. that she never truly wanted him around and just used him for labor. Despite Bonbon crying after being yelled at.....he's not wrong. bonbon sucks guys can u tell lmao.

Elisabeth: oh boy. bonbon tried EVERYTHING to get this girl to like her. everything under the sun. gifts, praise, ignoring her, giving her space, being in her face, bribes, secrets, but NOTHING would keep this lil lady from stopping her "BONBON IS THE WORST BABYSITTER WE EVER HAD!!" tantrums. even when Michael and even try to tell her to quit it and she is not that bad and lets them off the hook for a LOT, she never quits. maybe its "IM DADDY'S PRINCESS" attitude or just having another girl(?) in the house but she just can't stand bonbon. bonbon loves her dearly! Clara adores bonbon. bonbon was very nervous about even the idea of suggesting something together but god., they already were something. she gives her face kisses way too casually, and hugs her every time she sees bonbon. clara thinks bonbon is the best person to include in their family and bonbon adores her right back. she always worries that hes not 'good enough' for such a pretty woman but shes perfect in Clara's eyes. tbh they might be more in love then bonbon and Afton are but there love for each other is just as strong for him together.

So, y'all seemed to like my last TMR OC/idea prompt list thing, so I thought I'd do another one.

But actually focus on OC ideas this time.

Okay, so here are some cool OC ideas because there's actually a lot you can do with this universe, but everyone does the same shit.

And I am here to provide:

A transfer character. Can be used for either the books or the movies, but an OC that starts off in one Maze and then gets moved to another with no warning could be an interesting concept. WICKED has made giant simulation Mazes, monsters, flesh eating floating metal balls and teleportation windows- I don't think it's that far-fetched that they could scoop a kid from one Maze and throw them in another.

So, Thomas and Teresa obviously built the Maze, so prodigy characters are a staple of the series. I think an OC that has a lot of knowledge about anatomy and biology, who could work as a Med-jack or a Slicer, who actually designed and made the Grievers, and obviously doesn't remember it, could be a interesting concept.

More male OCs pls. I love seeing these ladies, don't get me wrong because it makes things more interesting. But I think fanfiction can just be for fun and I love seeing some casual normal guy OCs kicking it around the Glade. (Saying this as someone who has male and female characters for this universe.)

I'd also love to see a trans character.

An OC that snuck into the Maze could also be fun. I feel like I need to explain this one more. Picture this: your character is like Teresa and Thomas and has enough of watching their friends be tortured and killed, so they set themself up to go into the Maze early. So they rock up early, like in the middle of two Greenie days and it freaks everyone out. (This could also be an easy way to make it make more sense for fem! OCs to end up in the Glade.)

OC with a cyborg limp of some kind. WICKED could make it happen, don't tell me they wouldn't.

Also, lemme give some names 'cause there was a phase a while back where OCs had the most random names and people completely ignored the fact that all the characters in the Mazes are named after famous people.

(I have used some of these names for my own characters, but I will not be revealing the name of my main OC because she is too precious to me and I am protective over her name. I may one day post about her if people are interested.)

Review: Cult of Chucky (2017)

Not counting the 2019 remake, Cult of Chucky is the last feature film in the Child's Play franchise, and a film that, above all else, demonstrates that at this point Don Mancini was already envisioning its future as being on television. A lot of its biggest problems feel like they stem from it being overstuffed with plots and subplots, the kind of thing you'd throw into a television story to bring up the runtime to something you can justify spending several episodes on, and it ultimately ends in such a manner as to indicate that they did not intend for this to be the end, not by a long shot. And indeed, television is where this franchise ultimately wound up, with the TV show Chucky premiering four years later and by all accounts doing the franchise some real justice. Above all else, this movie, for better or worse, feels like Mancini setting the table for where he ultimately wanted to take the franchise, less a full story in its own right than a setup for a bigger, meatier adventure to come.

That's not to say that this is a bad movie, though. For as many problems as it has in the storytelling department and as much as it feels more like a two-part season premiere than a feature film, it still feels like a pretty damn good two-part season premiere. Chucky gets some of his old sense of humor back (just read the tagline on the poster) but is still a scary villain above all else, the psychiatric hospital setting was very well-utilized and avoided a lot of the unfortunate pitfalls that you normally see in horror movies of this sort, and while the supporting cast was a mixed bag, I still enjoyed Fiona Dourif's performance as Nica, especially towards the end of the film. Word of warning, though, it's also a movie that relies heavily on franchise lore. If Curse of Chucky was made to appeal to both longtime fans and complete newcomers, then this movie leans far more on the former to the point of being pretty inaccessible if you haven't seen any other films. If nothing else, I recommend at least watching Curse first, largely because this movie follows on directly from its ending. (So, spoiler warning.) Overall, if you liked Curse, then I can see you enjoying this movie too, though I wouldn't recommend it if you're completely new to the series.

We start the film with... well, here's the big problem I alluded to earlier. We really have three separate plots, with one of them getting more screen time than the others but all of them competing for attention and not really coming together until the very end. The first and most important concerns Nica Pierce, who's been institutionalized after Chucky framed her for the events of the last movie. After five years of punishing electroshock therapy to convince her that she did, in fact, have a psychotic break and kill her family out of jealousy of her sister, Nica is moved to the medium-security Harrogate facility under the care of Dr. Foley alongside a group of other patients: a man named Malcolm with split personalities (some of them celebrities like Michael Phelps and Mark Zuckerberg), an old lady named Angela who thinks she's a ghost, a woman named Claire who burned down her house, and a mother named Madeleine who killed her infant son. But the actual first scene brings us back to Andy Barclay, the protagonist of the first three movies, now an adult who the last film's post-credits scene revealed was still alive and had been awaiting Chucky's return for years. On top of that, we also have Tiffany Valentine, who put her soul into Jennifer Tilly's body at the end of Seed of Chucky and is now working with Chucky towards some nefarious goal.

While Nica's story is central, Andy is treated as a secondary protagonist, and one whose scenes rarely intersect with Nica's or seem to leave much impact on her. While I was pleasantly surprised with Alex Vincent's performance as Andy given how long he'd been retired from acting before this, his entire character felt like it could've been cut from the movie with minimal changes, like Mancini was setting him up to have a greater role in the follow-up he was working on but didn't really do much to integrate that with the story itself. Only at the very end does he ever interact with Nica, after Nica's story is finished. A more interesting direction might have been for Andy, who we see has been keeping track of Chucky for all these years and at one point tried to prove Nica's innocence by showing Chucky to Dr. Foley (he dismissed it as creative animatronics), to get in contact with Nica before and during the events of the film, letting her know that he's the only one who believes that she's not insane and that there really is a killer doll on the loose. This would've given him more to do over the course of the film rather than spend most of it at his house, and having them know each other would've added more weight to what is, in this movie, their only scene together. Instead, the two of them are kept apart for far too long, producing a story that constantly shifts gears and pulls me out.

Fortunately, the meat of Nica's story was still good enough for me to enjoy. Mancini gets a lot of mileage out of the hospital setting, portrayed as a landscape of creepy, ascetic white hallways that makes me wonder if he ever had a bad experience in an Apple store. More importantly, he avoided taking the easy route with the other patients and presenting them as threatening forces in their own right, an all-too-common depiction that plays into some very unfortunate stereotypes of mental illness. Even though it's made clear that Harrogate is a psychiatric hospital for the criminally insane, meaning that its patients each did something bad to get sent there, they are presented as human beings first, whether it's Claire distrusting Nica for having (allegedly) done far worse than she did, Madeleine's repressed feelings of guilt over her crime leaving her easily manipulated by Chucky, Angela finding a way to piss Chucky off when they first meet, or Malcolm finding himself vulnerable to attack because he doesn't know if he can trust his own senses when he encounters Chucky. Mancini felt interested in developing these people as actual characters, not caricatures of mental illness, and it meant that I actually cared about them when Chucky started going after them. Madeleine especially was one of my favorite characters for the dark directions her story ultimately went.

The kills are exactly as over-the-top as you'd expect from a movie that proudly flashes the word "Unrated" on its DVD cover, with highlights including a decapitation and somebody's throat getting ripped out alongside the usual stabbings. Brad Dourif's portrayal of Chucky, meanwhile, brings back some of the sense of humor he had in the past without making this an outright horror-comedy. His argument with Angela early on made it clear that this wasn't the deathly serious Chucky of Curse, but the insult comic who frequently mocked and taunted his victims, complete with some outright one-liners as he scores his most brutal kills. There's one scene late in the film where we're finally introduced to the titular "cult" that I'd hate to spoil, but may just be one of the single funniest Chucky moments in the entire franchise (and one that makes me give some well-earned props to the animatronic work). Mancini also likes to indulge in a lot of flair behind the camera, much of it influenced by a love of '70s giallo, and while it can be distracting at some points, it otherwise made this film feel lively, especially when paired with the austere environments the film takes place in. Again, this was a movie that felt like it had a bigger budget than it actually did.

The Bottom Line

Cult of Chucky is a movie for the fans, for better and for worse. If you're not already invested in the series, you'll probably enjoy the main slasher plot but find yourself scratching your head at some moments. If you're a fan, however, you'll get a huge kick out of all the callbacks and Easter eggs this film has to offer, and eager to see what the series does next. (TV, here we go!)

Imagine getting threatened and blackmailed by the US gov. that if you didnt do what they said they would find your loved one and imprison them and send them off to people that would likely torture and kill them... and the US gov. wants you to join a terror cell your college friend who joined after falling into despair when his wife was killed in an attack by the US military while she was shopping... But your friend is just some guy and he doesnt really want to hurt anyone in an attack and has second thoughts but you have to convince him to go through with it so some stolen c4 can be found. But you feel guilty when your in the van with all the c4 about to go through with the attack so you tell your friend that youre working for the US gov to save your loved one but you want your friend to be able to escape. And then your friend puts a gun in your face and yells at you for betraying them and convincing him to go through with this attack he hadnt wanted to do but then turning the gun on himself, killing himself in front of you. Then the US gov says good work here are some tickets, also were gonna cremate him no worries, but he cant be cremated so you stay an extra day and make sure he gets a proper burial. Then at the airport the next day after the funeral you get taken in because some white lady you asked to watch your bag for a moment reported you to security for looking suspicious. But then the plane you DO get on crashes on a mysterious fucked up island where youre immediately attacked by some redneck who thinks you crashed the plane because of the airport security situation.

Thats how Sayid and Sawyers relationship started. Way to go Shannon... your most lasting impact.

Sawyer gets loose and fights Sayid and ends up with a knife in his arm and almost dying. (Keamy coulda learned a lesson or two if he watched this episode. Dont come at Sayid if theres a sharp object within his grasp. It might end up stuck in your arm (or armpit in his case))

Sayid banishes himself cuz he feels guilty about Sawyer but comes back after his adventure with Danielle. Sawyer has some fun at his expense.

Sayid also has fun at Sawyers expense. (rare Sayid smile! Cheeky.)

Sayid makes a functioning pair of glasses out of stray, broken glasses so Sawyer can continue to read without headaches. (Sawyer hates them but uses them. Theyre lost after they get attacked on the raft. Press F in the chat.)

Sawyer relies on Sayid for some rationality and sanity. (they probably both hate it. I also hate it) First when Michael doesnt want Sayid to go with them and Sawyers like ??? but hes Sayid??? & then when Jack is acting weirdly shady with Juliet for no reason.

Sawyer & his group comes to save Sayid & his group. Sayid helps. (He trips one of them and snaps his neck with his ankles.) Sayid: 'nods at Sawyer' Sawyer: ???? TF YOU MEAN 'NODS AT SAWYER'? (he realized he wasnt built to fight Sayid & would be dead if Sayid wanted him dead)

BICKERING! (About how best to help Jack & his group. Hugo agrees with Sayid.)

Sayid gets locked up for reasons! Too babygirl I suspect. (Sawyer hates it.)

Sayid tied up and force fed drugs by a bunch of bastards. (Sawyer continues to hate it.)

Sayid explains the anatomy of the bomb and Sawyer yanks the wires out in a way he thinks he needs to per Sayids explanation. He fails. Sayid takes the bomb, dying in the process, and gives the rest a chance to survive the sub sinking. (Sawyer hates it so fucking much. Its actually kinda terrible.)

No more pics. BUT... pretty sure thats the last time they have any major interaction anyways. (Aside from the flashsideways where cop Sawyer (of course hes a fuckin cop) hunts Sayid down and arrests him. Which is terrible and I hate it.)

A mixed bag really.

(They would be fun if it werent for the horrors. And also the writers just not letting their relationship have any sort of satisfying end... how you gonna add such a nuanced situation with Sayid and his friend but then never address any of the racism Sayid faces from others (mostly Sawyer (and Shannon))

It’s not like he wanted to kill or become a cannibal, it’s just what he and his family have to do to survive - even in the movie, you can see everyone's resistance when Hoyt makes the decision. 

Tommy is a good family man, he’d go to any lengths to provide and protect, so I think he is already fixed, just needs some therapy.

I think if he would have gotten the help and therapy he needed as a child, everything he had done could’ve been avoided.

How, how, and how did you do this? Was it a magic spell? I'm terrified. Definitely the hardest of the boys to date if he's in his Hoodie state. Which is...well, constantly now.

Post Marble Hornets Hoodie is, at best, a zombie. Not literally of course but this man is the definition of dead inside. He doesn't feel anything regardless emotion, touch, colour...He's just there, existing. But being in a relationship with you brought his old self back, the one he thought had died years ago. It's a constant conflict of Brian-Hoodie-Brian-Hoodie inside him throughout the entire relationship.

If you dated him during MH, you'd see how totally different they are. Brian is this sweet, sweet boy with a bright smile that gives off golden retriever vibes, and who would offer you a shop full of flowers if he could (and he would tbh he has his contacts!). After the "incident", however, he's like a shadow of his old self. Hoodie is...a complete different being.

If you date him post-MH, well, you'll only assume how Brian was like through particular actions or things Hoodie does. Brian was...a boy with a bright future but no way with the ladies. Outspoken. Funny. That man is still within Hoodie, that shell of a man.

Hoodie is a complete opposite. He's literally OG Michael Myers. Sometimes you might wonder if he's even breathing from how still Hoodie gets. Whenever he's not active, you will find him hanging around the house or outside watching the trees. That is, if he's not watching you instead.

He hates looking at himself in the mirror and it shows. He only likes looking at you. And he does, to a point it becomes uncomfortable. It's often when you wake up in the middle of the night, a chill running down your spine, and find Hoodie watching you from a dark corner of the bedroom.

Most likely selective mute when he can. He doesn't talk, even to you. Sign language all the way! His voice reminds him of Brian and it's too much for him. He's just broken beyond repair, the poor man.

Masky probably forces him to talk during mission planning or meetings. That's why he still uses a voice changer.

Speaking of Masky! Hoodie remains one of the tallest in the main group, second comes Toby and then Masky. He doesn't care about height whatsoever.

Back with the main group again. Hoodie still goes on particular missions with Masky, just not as much as before. He either works alone or in pair with other proxies. He might not be the best at stalking anymore, but hacking devices still remain one of his best assets.

Takes a few years for him to take his mask off around you, but with reassurance and love, maybe a few months tops. You can see the age affecting him, I mean, Hoodie's in his early 40s. Undone beard, dark eyebags, small scars splattered across his face, hair stuck in a small ponytail...You get what I'm saying. His eyes are the worst, it's like you're staring into a dead person's eyes. Brian's spark is gone.

I already mentioned it, but I'll say it again; Hoodie hates his reflection. Mirrors who cross his way end up broken. He hates what he sees in the mirror. Just a...lost future of what could have been, of wandering dreams and nightmares, staring back at him through empty eyes.

Hoodie loves your hands. They're so soft and innocent compared to his. Cup his face or hold it in your hands and there's a 50/50 chance he'll cry.

Surprisingly the only proxy of the main gang who would not train you. He feels like he'd turn you into a person of interest for SlenderMan and Hoodie would rather kill you than let you become a proxy. But you can watch him train :)

He's a very calm person. It's very rare if he has a meltdown or an anger burst. He's the living embodiment of "I'll keep my emotions right here, deep down, and one day I'll die." He'll never be angry at you unless you go against his boundaries or rules.

Speaking of rules, yeah, they're not THAT bad. Just don't call him Brian, or try to get into his past, or anything regarding the other proxies and the Big Man himself.

Actually I take it back, Hoodie does have his moments of anger and it looks exactly the same as his peaceful era, except that everything he does is ten times more aggressive. He only does it around you as a way to let you know he's upset. Don't ask me why he does it tho.

Look, Hoodie can DENY all he wants, and he'll die denying it, but he's still Brian. He's still that golden boy and no matter how much he pretends he's not, that boy always comes to the surface around you.

Due to this, he's the most likely to spear a few victims if he can. He has always hated unnecessary blood.

Playing with your hair or hands will forever be one of his de-stress methods. Or tracing your skin. It makes him feel at peace, like the world has stopped moving and it's only you and him. Stargazing is on the to-do list. Or reading.

You actually see other proxies with frequency. They come around often but most don't really talk. They drop by to give Hoodie Gods-know-what and leave again without a word. He doesn't let them see you however. The only proxy allowed to be within your presence is one called 'Prowler' and you have no idea why that is.

Like you can see, Hoodie doesn't trust anyone. You're the only one he trusts and that is if you prove yourself you won't do anything stupid like searching on YouTube what Marble Hornets is. Won't end well, trust me.

A curious fan fact; Hoodie loves corners. The bed is in the corner of the bedroom. There's a small spot to relax in the corner of the living room. He feels safe in them and hopes you do too. He just wants you to feel safe, as insane as that sounds.

Sometimes you'll find him hugging himself in said corner. Just. Sitting down, hugging himself, head lost in the fog. You need to bring him back otherwise he'll just...stay there until SlenderMan calls for him.

You've probably already seen how I could go for HOURS talking about Hoodie being a sad boy. I mean. Lives up to his mask ig??

Oh yeah! You can borrow his hoodies. He feels weird whenever he sees you using them around the house but he won't stop you. Unless you want to.

Back to what I was saying. Don't think Hoodie is this soft boy who went through traumatic stuff. This is a man in his early 40s who has lost count of how many people he has murdered. He banged open a man's head with his crowbar once. Said this, he's not afraid to do the same to anyone who brings you harm. Thinks that if you were to be killed or harmed by anyone, it should be him.

Toren J Kuznicki, Colorado inmate 156772, born 1993, incarceration intake in 2012 at age 18, scheduled for parole consideration July 2037, with full release October 2047

Murder

Two gunshots and a string of poor decisions landed a Pueblo teenager in prison for 40 years.

Pueblo District Judge David Crockenberg sentenced Torey Kuznicki, 18, to the maximum term under a plea agreement, saying he couldn't express any better what had been said by the family of Kuznicki's victim, Michael Hopkins, 50.

Kuznicki pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in exchange for the dismissal of the first-degree murder charge and burglary charges.  He faced between 30 and 40 years in prison as part of the agreement.

Hopkins' wife, brothers, father and sister-in-law spoke about the loss they felt following his killing in June 2010.  

Kuznicki  was 16 at the time and lived in the same Pueblo West neighborhood as Hopkins. He was arrested six months later after an exhaustive police investigation of the killing. Sheriff's deputies said they believe Kuznicki broke into Hopkins' home early June 21, 2010, intending to burglarize the home and Hopkins startled him.

"Not only did we lose Mike, we lost a family dynamic," said Hopkins' wife, Robin, who along with her son, Ben, were among the initial suspects in the crime.  "I wonder if Torey was watching from his window when they took us away for questioning or if he was watching when I went outside the day Mike was murdered," she said.  Robin Hopkins spoke about how she thought her husband had suffered a stroke or heart attack when she first saw him that morning.

When she couldn't find their cellphones — Kuznicki is alleged to have stolen them — she said she woke her son and asked for help. He ended up stepping across the body of his father to find another phone to call 911. Still, Robin Hopkins said her husband wouldn't want to see Kuznicki spend his life in prison.

"Part of the irony of this situation is if this young man hadn't presented a weapon, Mike probably wouldn't have even called police," she said. "He would have sat him down and said, 'Kid you're ruining your life' and he would have called his parents."

Others in the Hopkins family said they couldn't see how Kuznicki had anything other than murder on his mind when he broke into the home on the 1800 block of Spanish Lady Lane.  They talked about how Kuznicki fired two shots at Hopkins and that the first shot probably didn't kill him.

"You don't go into a house with a bullet in the chamber with any other intent," said Ron Hopkins, Michael Hopkins' brother. Hopkins' father, Dale, also focused on that fact his son was shot twice in his own home, "a place he thought was safe."

Kuznicki's parents spoke on his behalf, asking Crockenberg to impose the 30-year sentence. Jim Kuznicki said he felt sorrow for the Hopkins family, saying no family should go through what they've suffered, but he said he believed his son had suffered from what he did, as well. "I know it was tearing at him for a long time," Kuznicki said. "He was essentially turning himself in with the statements he made to his friends." Investigators said Torey Kuznicki had made a number of cryptic statements to classmates about going to jail.

Kuznicki's father told the judge the teen was a good athlete and that he had expected his son would earn a scholarship to college this year. Jim Kuznicki said he believed his son didn't come forward with all of the information from that night because he is afraid for his family.

Kuznicki's mother, Kim McCullah, said she struggled with her son when he was younger and said she had hoped he would have been tried as a juvenile, where he would  have been given a chance for rehabilitation. But she also understood why the district attorney charged her son as an adult.

"I just don't understand why he was there where he was," she said. "He is a smart kid, but he used his intelligence in ways he shouldn't have."

When she finished her comments she told her son she loved him.

Kuznicki spoke briefly, apologizing for the pain he caused the Hopkins family.

"It was an accident," he said. "I take full responsibility for it. Maybe one day I can be forgiven for it."

Kuznicki will be eligible for parole in 23 years.
