Part 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7
Kenka Bancho series

Metal Max Xeno: Reborn
Metal Max Xeno is a fantastic, if highly flawed game. How does Reborn do?
Two steps forward, three steps back.
The game is harder. Which needs a reminder that Metal Max Xeno was unfair. Battles were often won because of random chance. So, making it harder means you won't even be able to do that.
The biggest changes are open world, replacing the job system with a skill grid, and a dog.
The open world is like Pokmon SV. It is an open world that is a great improvement over previous versions, but is also incredibly hollow. In Metal Max Xeno there is no combat mode, except there is. So, the game never moves from an exploration mode to a combat mode, where both sides line up. While this is fun, it gives you less choice, and makes combat less clear. The reason why turn-based RPG's have everyone line up is that it makes it CLEAR. What Reborn does is keep the same field, and have enemies move around the field. If they notice you, they will attack you. They changed every all-target attacks to a cone-attack, which actually makes sense. But, the new gameplay doesn't add anything of any real substance. The exploration mode is fun, but makes battles less clear. The game also completely refuses to do anything useful with the open world. The terrain isn't large enough to make movement in combat all that useful, unless you want to setup an enfilead for your machine guns. You can't hull-down. You can't use terrain to try and protect yourself from enemy attacks. In fact, if you do, the game will have you out of sight, and automatically break offs combat. The one thing this does do is allow you to run passed SoNs. But, they do this because they make the game more difficult, so you need to.
They replace the job system with a generic skill grid, which, is NOT FUN. The Job System was definitely flawed, but they could have added a progressive job system, where you expand your job, rather than replacing it. Instead, everyone gets almost the same grid, which is boring. They also remove Talis's signature move. Talis has/d the Hunter job, which is the most useful job in the game, as it combines a great balance of foot and tank abilities, and includes the ability to attack twice with any weapon. This is the most useful skill in the game, extremely easy for a Hunter to get, but is also essential while you are by yourself at the start of the game. And this is one of the biggest problems, as this skill is one of the only reasons you can survive by yourself. But also, later in the game, it remains an incredibly useful tool for almost every battle. By removing it, you are making the game harder, and again, one of the biggest problems is that even well prepared, you are still winning a lot of SoNs battles because of RNG.
The last big change is a dog. Apparently you can play as Po-M, but that doesn't come until much later, and again, without the job system, she does not add her own job. Dog you can get before anyone else, and is incredibly useful when on foot. Dog will not follow commands, but has a machinegun. This is useful, but he will never stay in the tank, which means if you get into a tank battle, he will run out, and get himself hurt/killed incredibly easily. God, they could have given him the Warhound job, and let others take it. It's also a replacement for your missing skills, that would have been more useful.
Other than the big three, the game doesn't change that much.
You can challenge Catastropus immediately if you like, which would be useful in NG+. This is a benefit, but, in all honesty, in Hunter Mode, (non-story playthrough), you can breeze through the entire game in a half-hour. So, not that much of a benefit.
The primary plot revolves around a love triangle. You might think it revolves around avoiding extinction, what with the EXTINCTION meter, and all, but instead, the only fertile woman alive falls in love with a sterile man (you) who doesn't want a relationship with her at all, and follows him into combat. Toni is the weakest combatant, always, forever, but she does provide useful support skills. And games completely forget that you can just have someone with you for support. You play the main character, who is the most useful character. You encounter a drunk, because Humans are going extinct. In the original Metal Max Xeno, when you save Toni, the drunkard comes to his senses, and proves to be an incredible mechanic. Not so useful in combat, but he's literally the second playable character you unlock. He's in-love with Toni. And the game ends with you riding off into the distance. Toni follows you. The mechanic follows her. So, literally, the love triangle continues after the fucking story ends. This is not improved at all, in the slightest.
The best girl is clearly Maria
She has the Soldier-class, the second most useful combat class, and is already infertile, so putting her into combat isn't risking the Human race any more than we already are.
The EXTINCTION meter was primarily plot-based, and had no real gameplay use. Reborn gives it a slight benefit. Enemies will respawn after a certain amount of time, and this is reflected with the EXTINCTION meter. This is only slightly beneficial. It does allow you to defeat individual SoNs multiple times in the playthrough, which completely and utterly destroy the weight of the story. What they could have done is have a Hunter mode where the SoNs respawn, or just let you trigger their respawn while in Hunter mode. To allow this, the game adds a day-night cycle, and like every fucking game in Human history, the day-night cycle in the game takes like a half-hour. Which means that while there is a difference between day and night, you can't take advantage of it, other than 15 minutes, maybe. So, you can deploy in day or night, and make a quick rush to take advantage of the time of day. What they could have just done is make it real-time, BECAUSE THEY ALREADY GIVE YOU THE ABILITY TO REST UNTIL DAY OR NIGHT. This makes it harder for you to just farm, as you can clear out an area in a few minutes, and then have to return to Iron Base to rest before you can do it again.
While you have a lot more freedom of movement, because of this, there are a lot of areas you could go on foot, but can't because of invisible walls.
It also raises a question about how you move multiple characters in combat, because you are directly controlling your movements. And again, it doesn't add much to combat, while actually making it more annoying.
There are a lot more clumps of debris that you can blow up with a cannon, but many of them require 700+ power, which is just an obvious way to block it off until NG+. They could have just blocked it off until NG+.
This is incredibly disappointed. I love Metal Max Xeno, but it is a flawed game. Instead of fixing the flaws, they decided to add even more.
