mordred through time (movies, tv shows, opera and musicals)
Part 5: From 2018 to 2023 (and 2024)
Other Parts: Part 1: From 1949 to 1981 -> here Part 2: From 1982 to 2002 -> here Part 3: From 2002 to 2010 -> here Part 4: From 2014 to 2017 -> here
For this last part I wanted to talk a bit about queer Mordred!
First of all, Mordred is one of the main characters who is written as LGBTQ in novels and other media. My arthurian excel list of queer arthurian characters (arthurian list of everything, in the LGBTQ sheet) is up to a few years ago, but the numbers seem to be: LGBTQ Lancelot in 16 media, Arthur in 13 media which is equal to Mordred who is also LGBTQ in 13 media (two being interpretations: White's "The once and future king" and "Fall of Camelot" fromt he Time Life books). Most of these are, of course, novels, with the first ever appearance of LGBTQ Mordred in 1956 Borowsky's novel "The Queen's knight", where Mordred is a gay man. Then in 1982 Cherryh's "Port Eternity" has asexual Mordred, even if the characters could be debated on how arthurian they are. We then jump to 1997 with the short story "The Pretender" by Stephen Dedman, with mlm Mordred.
2005 "A Connecticut Fashionista in King Arthur's Court" by Mari Mancusi (gay Mordred) 2006 "Mordred bastard son" by Douglas Clegg (gay Mordred) 2008 "The Silurian series" by Wilson (gay Mordred) 2012 "The Prince and the Program" by Mercer (bisexual Mordred) 2014 "Mordred and the king" by Curlovich (gay Mordred)
In movies, shows and musicals instead we could consider 2008 musical Mordred the first iteration of queer Mordred (part 3). This is of course an interpretation and it might probably just be a case of queer-coding of villains that reminds of Disney movies. Still, there is no doubt Bobby Steggert, who is an out gay actor (at the time, now he is a therapist) played an obvious queer coded Mordred.
It is only in 2014 that we have an explicit LGBTQ Mordred with "High Noon over Camelot" which also for the first time ever introduces Mordred as a trans man. From 2017 we also get introduced to Fate's Mordred (Fate/Aprocrypha and subsequient movies and stage shows) whose gender has always been a debated topic. I already talked about it in part 4, but Mordred in Fate is definitely written as a non binary character. In 2018 the webseries "The Campaign for Camelot" has Mordred as a protagonist and mlm, with a romance as well (another male character in the show). The last time we saw Mordred with a romance was back in the 60s, in the movie "Sword of Lancelot"!
I think the most interesting thing is that Mordred is without a doubt the character who is the most interpreted as LGBTQ in movies and tv shows. From memory, the only other characters are Morgana (in the Netflix's "Cursed", webseries "Legend" and "The Campaign for Camelot"), Lancelot (in "Monty Python and the Holy Grail", "High Noon over Camelot" and "Spamalot"), Galahad (in Josh Ritter's song "Galahad"), Arthur ("High noon over Camelot") and Merlin (webseries "Legend").
2018 Arthur et les enfants de la Table Ronde: This is a two-seasons French animated show that narrates the adventures of Arthur, an orphan kid living in Uther's kingdom. The show has other arthurian characters as kids (Guinevere, Gawain, Sagramore, Morgana) and Mordred himself is also a kid. Morgause and Igraine (Morgana's sisters) are the main villain and Mordred (their cousin) is also a villain. The voice from the clip is from the Italian dub but the original French voice actor was Ricardo Richter.
2018 The Campaign for Camelot (webseries): This websites (you can watch it here) is a complete 78 short episodes series where different modern arthurian characters decide to run for the school board against Arthur's wishes. Mordred is one of the main protagonists and he is introduced in episode 7. Over the series he also develops a romance with Izzy (Iddawg, from “The Dream of Rhonabwy”). To clarify, in the clip Mordred is the guy without the glasses and the darker shirt! And he is played by Dylan Martin.
2018/2019 OSK's Knights of the Round Table musical: This clip is from a recording but a dvd also exists. OSK is a Japanese theater company of all women. Mordred was interpreted by Momo Mika. The story of the musical follows the classical Arthur-Guinevere-Lancelot triangle with Mordred appearing (as Arthur's son) in the second part of the story.
2020 Arthur and Merlin: Knights of Camelot: A much less exciting movie than I expected, focusing on Arthur trying to reclaim Camelot after Mordred betrays him. Mordred (played by Joel Phillimore) plays Arthur's son and the villain of the story. He often uses threats of sexual violence towards Guinevere.
2020 Fate/Grand Order the movie: Camelot: Another installment in the Fate series. This movie is set in the Grand Order timeline (different from Apocrypha), but Mordred is still a very similar character and they are still voiced by Miyuki Sawashiro. The original title is Fate/Grand Order: Shinsei Entaku Ryouiki Camelot 1 - Wandering; Agateram as in 2020 only part 1 released. Part 2 is called Fate/Grand Order: Shinsei Entaku Ryouiki Camelot - Paladin; Agateram and was released in 2021. Basically part one is Wandering Agateram and part two is Paladin Agateram. Different from other Fate series, this one is set in the past (in 1273 A.D.).
2021 Fate/Grand Order: The Grand Temple of Time: Another movie based on the videogame Fate/Grand Order... please do not ask me the plot, I just know Mordred is not as present here as in the previous movie or as in Fate/Apocrypha.
2021 Le Roi Arthus opera: This is a 1895 opera written by Ernest Chausson and sung in French. I already talked about it before, just know this is the most recent iteration of it and the only video we have of the opera performed in arthurian clothes (the previous filmed performance was a modernization). Mordred was played by baritone Justin Austin.
2023 Camelot Revival: The return of the musical Camelot! There are a few bootlegs around (at least 4 of them) if you want to watch it, but I am not allowed to share them. Still, I got them from asking a gift on the reddit BootlegsGifts. As I still have to watch it I cannot comment on any possible difference here, just know this version was extremely successful. Mordred is played by Taylor Trensch, and Hawley Gould was his understudy (not in audio).

bbc merlin season 6 but it's directly post-dotd of gwen bringing about the golden age with merlin being there sometimes to help. just 13 episodes of her being the once and future queen and excellent. this is the one (1) thing I'd let them do because 1. it could actually be really cool as opposed to any other possible s6 ideas, and 2. it would piss 75% of the fandom off soooooo much and exactly the kind of people who'd deserve it <3

once upon a timeline
okay so i've been obsessed with ouat recently with my rewatch and i was looking into Henry's weird ass family tree and oh my god i need to put this out there because why.
for starters i've only included big plot points or villains and main characters etc so none of the side plots but also i've realised how weird some of the age gaps are.
oh yeah also ouat likes to fuck with their timelines and historical context so i have gone with the basic dates that make sense based on what the characters in the show actually say.
the dates are what they would be in the real world not in ouat logic.
pre-main timeline
Ancient Greece - zeus and hades happen (season 6)
ancient greece but later - orpheus and Euridice and pandora's box happen
between 400-500AD - the Holy Grail and Merlin and Nimue
1650's-1660's - Mother Gothel leaves the new land without magic
1770- Malcolm is Born
1804- Rumplestiltskin is born, Malcolm is 34
1808- Rumple is abandoned, Peter Pan becomes a fae trickster tumblr meme
1845- Baelfire is born, Rumple is 41
1859- Bae arrives in england, Rumple is 55
1947- Zelena is born and abandoned
1948- Cora and Rumple have their weird affair
1949- Regina is born
1955- Snow White is born
1973- Regina sends the huntsman after snow, Snow is 18, Regina is 24
23/3/1977 - Neal (Bae) chooses this as his fake birthday
22/10/1983 - Emma is born, the curse is cast
1991 - Neal escapes neverland and comes back to the land without magic
15/8/2001 - Henry is born, Emma is 18, Neal Cassidy is 24
22/10/2011 - Emma arrives in Storybrooke
13/5/2012 - The curse is broken.
so some of the dates are based on when episodes aired and things such as when the curse breaks and when emma arrives in storybrooke. other dates are based on easter eggs in the show like Neal's birthday. so i realised that Neal had to have landed back in the real world in 1991 because he was 14 when he got to neverland and obviously didn't age so working backwards those dates make sense.
however... emma was 17 when she got pregnant with henry and at best Neal is 24 but at worst he's 156 years old! i mean what the fuck. and he has to be that old because he tells Emma that technically "I should be a couple hundred by now" (2,15). so at the oldest he can be with Neal's Once upon a time maths education the earliest he can be born is 1845 because big ben isn't built until 1859 which is the absolute earliest that he can be in old england.
the rest of the dates i managed from working backwards from when the curse was broken and cast and from small things the characters say. In the first episode of season 2, Emma says that her and Mary Margaret were the same age which means that the 10 year war she has with regina that ended with the curse started when she was 18.
so what i've found from this is that Henry's family tree back to his paternal great grandad literally spans hundreds of years. the average life span for these fuckers is about 100. basically they're a family of elves and you can't convince me otherwise.

Merlin BBC UK TV Show - Opinion Piece Part 18 - Who's The Boss - Arthur Or Merlin ?
One of my favorite episode of TV series Community is the one where Abed takes a class on Who's The Boss?.
youtube
I thought it would make an excellent topic for Merlin because the dynamic Angela and Tony share is quite similar to Arthur and Merlin.
For those unfamiliar with Who's The Boss, here is a brief synopsis:
youtube
Tony takes a job as a live-in housekeeper for Angela Bower and her young son and moves in with his daughter. The title of the show refers to the role reversal of Tony and Angela. Angela is the breadwinner of the home, and Tony (although he is not her husband) stays at home and takes care of the household and provides guidance and support to the children. While there is banter and many hints of their feelings for each other, Tony and Angela do their best to avoid facing this aspect of their developing relationship. In the meantime, however, they learn to rely on each other frequently for emotional support. Despite Angela being the employer of Tony, the series always questions, who is really in charge of the household.
Power dynamics within the Merlin BBC TV Show:
Tumblr media
Arthur is a royal and Merlin is his manservant. Considering the show is set in a medieval fantasy world where the social hierarchy is strictly defined, the question Who's The Boss should be a moot point.
However we see Merlin constantly banter with, berate, humiliate, interfere with, refuse, make demand of, advise, comfort, defy and mock Arthur.
Tumblr media
These are actions, that are quite unbecoming of a mere servant and forces us to critically evaluate the power balance of their relationship.
______________________________________________________________
Lets implement the Professor's Episode - Conclusion Domination Index Plot model from the Community episode.
The basis of this model is simple. It states that a person gets the upper-hand by having the last word edge wise during the conclusion of every episode.
The basis of verification is as follows:
Season 1 Episode 1 : Concludes with Arthur expressing his displeasure of having Merlin be his manservant. Merlin is then summoned by Arthur to carry out a task. Arthur ends up getting the better of Merlin here.
Season 1 Episode 2 : Concludes with Arthur admitting his mistake to Merlin and rehiring him. Following which he promptly delegates Merlin a series of tasks to do. According to me, Arthur ends up getting the better of Merlin here again.
I have listed A for Arthur and M for Merlin in the table below.
Tumblr media
In Season 1: Merlin gets the upper hand in 7 of 13 episodes i.e. 54%
In Season 2: Merlin gets the upper hand in 8 of 13 episodes i.e. 62%
In Season 3: Merlin gets the upper hand in 9 of 13 episodes i.e. 69%
In Season 4: Merlin gets the upper hand in 9 of 13 episodes i.e. 69%
In Season 5: Merlin gets the upper hand in 7 of 13 episodes i.e. 54%
In the Entire Series: Merlin gets the upper hand in 40 of 65 episodes i.e. 62 %
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So the answer to the eternal question Who's The Boss in the Merlin TV Show is..............................................................................................
ARTHUR PENDRAGON
Tumblr media
This is due to the fact that the Professor's model fails to take into account defining plot points that occur in a series.
The entire model presented above is refuted by this one single scene between Arthur and Merlin.
Tumblr media
Merlin despite being a powerful sorcerer agrees to becomes Arthur's servant ( reluctantly at first but devoutly by the end of the series)
Since Merlin is the main titular protagonist, we the audience are conditioned to see Merlin subvert traditional class roles and get the upper hand.
When that fails and Arthur gets the upper hand, there is a sense of subconscious discomfort. It would also explain why certain people in the fandom feel Merlin was mistreated by Arthur and that is true to a certain extent as Arthur in Season 5 Episode 13 apologizes to Merlin as to how he has treated him.
However Merlin gives it to Arthur as good as he gets and despite being in a position to leave anytime, continues to serve Arthur.
The underlying reason to their "codependent relationship" is better explored in my other post here:
BUT THE SIMPLEST ANSWER TO THE QUESTION RAISED IN THIS POST IS THAT ARTHUR IS THE BOSS AND THEREFORE LIKE ALL BOSSES HE IS A...
Tumblr media
Mention in the replies below, who do you think was the boss?

Edric Storm - Fancasts
Age: 12 - 13
Appearance: He has a strong and solid build. He’s an attractive youth with deep blue eyes and jet-black hair. He takes after his father with his previously mentioned eye and hair colour but also in his cheekbones and square jaw. He gets his big ears from his mother.
Tumblr media
Character: Mordred [Younger]
Actor: Asa Butterfield
Show: Merlin BBC [2008] [Season 1 and 2]
[He’s 11 during this show so the right age for him in book one even though he doesn’t appear in story beyond a brief mention . He’s unfortunately skinny and small so he doesn’t have his build. He doesn’t have jet-black hair but he does have dark brown hair. He has greyish blue eyes instead of deep blue. He does have a square jaw. His ears are also a bit big and stick out slightly. He wears medieval ish clothes.]
Tumblr media
Character: Uthred of Bebbanburg
Actor: Tom Taylor
Show: The Last Kingdom [2015] [Season 1, Episode 1]
[He was 13 during this episode so better suited for him in Essos age wise although the scenes make more sense for him at Storm’s End and Dragonstone. He has a slightly stronger and more solid build than the pervious cast. He has a square jaw but his red ish brown hair and his eyes are only a blue ish green. His ears aren’t big but do stick out slightly. He wears Saxon clothes pre-capture which is when he has the most useful scenes for Edric.]
Tumblr media
Character: Oswald
Actor: N/A
Show: The Last Kingdom [2015] [Season 3]
[Unkown Age, looks to be between 13 - 15 years old so around the right age for Edric in future books. He is handsome with a square jaw and relatively big ears that stick out. He unfortunately only has dark brown hair and not black. I’m unsure of his eye colour. He wears Norse/Saxon ish clothing.]

Tumblr media
Y/n walked the dark, empty streets of Arcadia like she has done many times before. The wind softly tried to dry the tears but they were falling faster than nature could do its job. She could feel her feet barely lifting from the ground. It was over. She had failed. Vendel was dead and Jim had been exiled into the deep. A master wizard trained by Merlin himself and she couldn’t even keep his first human champion alive. A wizard that couldn’t keep her little brother alive.
“Even the word hopeless isn’t void of hope, right Blinky?” Jim quoted his master.
“Jim, you can’t go” Y/n said in vain. He was going to leave no matter what she said, no matter how much her hand shaked.
“Don’t worry” Jim stretched his hand to her and she immediately took it “Merlin said I was gonna have to fight. And I’ll fight” he smiled at her.
“Merlin” The name made Y/n body grow weaker. The hand that was holding Jim’s fell to her side and was replaced by Claire’s.
She walked, like many times before, purposeless downtown. Her eyes were lost in the blue. Maybe, if she walked long in off, she would be absorbed by the sky and none of this would be happening. Maybe, some balance would be restored.
Jim’s words echo in her mind “Merlin said”
Y/n closed her eyes and tried to shut off her brother’s voice but only made a distant, smaller voice stronger “Why is it always like this?”
She tried to drown the voices while she walked but she couldn’t. The whisper grew until it was a scream beating into her chest, until she had to stop in the middle of the street and use a tree for support.
“Please” she whispered to no one as she took her shaky hand to her chest. The pain was becoming unbearable.
“Y/n?” A woman called, putting her hand on Y/n’s shoulder “Y/n?”
“Why is it always like this?” Y/n exploited, tears violently falling to the ground.
“Y/n, what happened?” The woman grabbed both of Y/n’s shoulders, her green eyes full of concern.
“It’s not fair…It’s always what Merlin says. There is no space for what I want…or what I…feel…” Y/n hid her face behind her hands, sobbing violently.
“Oh, birdie” she hugged her.
The nickname made her cry ever harder.
“Look at me” she whispered into her hair and pulled apart to look at Y/n into her eyes “Y/n, I promise you, one day, we’ll have our place in the world. We will no longer have to hide”
Y/n nodded, enamored with the idea of this world that she has been hearing about since she was a child.
“And you will be by my side, sister” she smiled.
“I’ll always be by your side, Morgana” Y/n hugged her.
“Y/n!”
“Y/n!!”
Y/n blinked. She was no longer hiding in the deep of night, it was the middle of the day and she was back on Arcadia.
“Y/n!”
“Blinky?” She looked around for the troll and saw him in a tunnel “what’s going on?” She ran to him but as she got closer she saw he wasn’t alone. The tunnel was filled with trolls. She took a step back, the guilt rising in her stomach for running away and leaving them to their own devices.
“Come with me! Jim is alive! Gunmar is building an army! We need your help!” The troll pulled her by the arm before she could walk into the sun.
“What?!”
Y/n and Blinky went back to TrollMarket to help keep evacuating trolls when they were cornered. The trollhunters and a group of trolls that were ready to leave by gyre were ready to fight once a cursed Draal broke through the wall when Y/n felt something in the air. With each hit to the wall Y/n’s hand would get farther away from her staff. The human part of her wanted to fight until her body gave up but the wizard part of her wanted to see it played out.
“Wait, Claire, what are you doing?” Jim screamed
Y/n turned around and saw Claire on top of the stairs, clutching the shadow staff.
“There’s another way”
“You can’t make a portal that big” Screamed Blinky
“It’ll kill you” screamed Toby
“If we do nothing, we’re all dead. You would do the same. You did do the same” Claire screamed back.
Y/n smiled when she saw the determination in her eyes. She knew the look all too well.
“Claire, wait” Y/n pushed through the crowd of trolls and ran to Claire.
“I wasn’t thinking. There’s gotta be another way” Jim insisted.
“Guys wall breaking” announced Aaarrrgghh.
Jim ran behind her sister to get to her girlfriend but it was too late, Claire started the spell before Y/n could get there. The shadow magic invaded the room, pushing Jim to the ground. The room filled with purple smoke and the shadows started to eat Claire’s body.
“It’s killing her” screamed Jim from the floor.
Y/n jumped to grab the staff and take some of the pressure off of Claire. She closed her eyes and felt the magic flow through her, welcoming the familiar cold feeling into her.
She could see Jim, Toby, Aaarrrgghh, Blinky and NotEnrique coming to help but she couldn’t concentrate on it, too distracted by the nostalgia that the amount of magic was giving her.
The moment was over as quickly as it began. They were safe in the woods but Y/n felt the emptiness, the loneliness like it was the first time, as if Morgana was being torn from her again.
Y/n sat down on the grass as the trolls celebrated their new leader, Blinky. And for a second she felt like she was back on that cliff watching the sea swallowing her all over again.
Y/n opened the door to Douxie’s apartment and let her bag fall to the floor. Her body was devoid of strength.
“Hello, love” Douxie whispered from the couch, his eyes half opened.
Y/n turned around and smiled at the image of Douxie sprawled on the couch with Al and Archie nestled on the left side of his neck. He must’ve fallen asleep after his shift at Benoit’s.
“Hi” she whispered back, kicking off her shoes “Don’t get up” she laid next to him, placing her head on top of his chest.
“Everything okay?” He grabbed her waist and pulled her closer.
Y/n grabbed his shirt and closed her eyes, letting Douxie’s heartbeat washed away all the sadness of the day “I am now”
As she was falling asleep, she heard Morgana’s voice in the distance “My child, we are linked now. Now and for all of time. Your essence and mind, we are one”
Tumblr media
A/n: hello!! I think if I upload mondays ill be able to be back on track!! Let me know what you thought!!
Are you enjoying december?? We put my cat on a diet so she’s been having a pretty rough holidays #prayforchoco

My Thoughts on DVD sets
I think I've mentioned wanting to do this last year, but I'm finally going to do it: espousing my thoughts on various DVD box sets that I own.
Star Trek the Original Series & Star Trek Deep Space 9: Both sets have silvery lettering on grey discs, which makes it frustrating to read. While the DS9 discs do list the episodes on each one, the TOS DVD sets do come with either a pamphlet-ish thing or the back of the 'cover sleeve' lists which episodes are on which disc. Furthermore, the DS9 discs are layered in a way that made it extra complicated to keep track of where I was and which disc to get next when I watching. Lastly, the disc menus are busy enough that it can be tricky to tell where I am on a screen (although admittedly the 'secret featurettes' are nifty).
Avatar the Last Airbender: I like the box art and each disc has a different image but no specific episodes are listed.
Avatar the Legend of Korra: Same as the Star Trek ones, the discs are silver lettering on grey discs- again, it can tricky to read.
Sailor Moon (90s 1-4 & Crystal 1-3): I admittedly haven't opened all the DVD sets, but the ones I have done so contain shiny discs that list episode numbers opposed to 'volume X of season Y' style labeling. Note: the 90s anime is on Blu-Rays rather than DVDs, unlike everything else listed here.
BBC Merlin: There is a different image on each disc, the layout has more manageable overlapping (again, I love Star Trek DS9's content, but I wish the DVD box set had been better designed). Episode numbers as well as season are on each disc, with enough color contrast be easily read. Only issue is that towards the end, there's a notable hiccup. The fifth season's 3rd disc says it contains episodes 9-12 but only has three episodes on it. Thankfully, despite saying "Episode 13 and Bonus Materials", the fourth disc contains both parts of the series finale. It was certainly nerve wrecking for me until I realized what had happened back when I was watching.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here is my proof of that error. One disc contains three episodes and the other contains two, despite what the discs say. Huh, I suppose this post is extra fitting as today is the 12th anniversary of part two airing. I think this error is probably symbolic in some fashion, but maybe I'm overthinking it. If anyone else has the BBC Merlin box set, does yours also have this issue or did I get a weird misprint?
Stargate SG-1: Different hues for on each disc per season. 'Season X Volume Y' style framing is used. However, the interior of the DVD covers do list the contents of each disc, including special features.
Stargate Atlantis: Atlantis itself is on each disc; only the first season bothers to give each disc a different hue from others. 'Season X Disc Y' formatting is used, and same as its parent show, the interior of the DVD cover lists the discs' contents.
Stargate Universe: All the discs per season are the same color, but they do list the episodes on them in a contrasting color.
Once Upon a Time: Okay, I have still only opened up season 1's box set, but I'm going to guess that 2 & 7 have similar setups. The discs show different variations of the episode title screen (the dark blue woods with a shadowy item or person significant to the episode). The episode numbers are listed on the discs as well as the DVD cover interior listing the episode titles. However, you do need to access the disc to find out what 'bonus feature' is on them as it's not specified.
Star Wars The Clone Wars (1-5): A different character is on each disc, which are numbered within each season. The DVD cover interiors do list each disc's contents, though, down to brief episode synopses.
Power Rangers (1-17): On the one hand, yes the discs are the same hue per DVD and 'Disc X' format is used. However, each season's menu screen is modified to match the team's headquarters, down to the font changing. That shows an attention to detail that I appreciate. The DVD cover interiors do list the episodes on each disc. I might do a separate post showcasing the various menus, because it really was thoughtful of the DVD menu designers.
Pokémon: I have multiple seasons, but they're all basically the same setup. A different Pokémon is on each disc that has a number and there's no easy way to tell which episodes are on the disc ahead of time.
The Flash (1-2): They use a 'Disc X' format, but the DVD box sets do contain a highly informative pamphlet on the discs' contents: synopses, air dates, whether there are cut scenes for an episode, which special features are where, and a cast list on the back.
Legends of Tomorrow: I only have unwrapped season 7 because I heard noises upon getting the package and it turns out that the case was a bit broken but not really worth all the fuss of sending back as the discs themselves still worked. The discs are numbered, with the interior DVD cover listing the disc contents- episode titles, which ones have unaired scenes, and any special features (none of which seem to point to a wrapping up of the series, unfortunately). It'll be interesting to see if the earlier seasons are the same or not.
The Librarians: A singular stack of discs, which makes access a little tricky. They're basically blank with 'Disc X of Season Y' formatting. To be fair, I did pay under $20 for it, so it's a good setup for that price.
Leverage: Seasons 2-5 have 'Disc X Episodes A-D' setups, as well as the interior DVD cover insisting episode titles and the special feature contents. Season 1 has just a 'Season X Disc Y' set up; although it is possible it originally came with a pamphlet that had been lost by the time it reached the library I bought it from. Second, I'm pretty sure this version of season 1 was meant to be for Quebec as everything is in English & French, particularly as the audio options for those languages are above the episodes on the menu screens. It also lacks the audio commentaries on the other seasons, so I might end up needing to buy another version that does have them. I suppose I'm lucky that this version plays on my laptop. This also isn't even going into the airing versus production order of the episodes.
Xena Warrior Princess: The actual discs have mild color coding per season that matches the DVD cover. They do the 'Season X Disc Y' format, with the DVD interior cover listing the episodes and their synopses.
Static Shock: Each disc lists the episodes it contains. The DVD cover image of Static is used as the image on that season's discs. I haven't unwrapped the box sets for seasons 3-4 yet, but it's likely they'll follow the pattern.
I haven't opened the 'full series' box set yet, but my season 1 Justice League (DCAU) DVD has a different superhero (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, & Green Lantern) on each disc along with a number. The back of the DVD case lists the episodes & special features on each disc; there's also a 'sleeve' with a series synopsis that the DVD case goes into. The actual DVD interior has black and white images from various episodes. Now I'm curious what the full series box set will be like.
Dinotopia: I don't own the miniseries, just the TV show. Each disc has a different image and is numbered. The episode numbers and titles are listed on them.
Warehouse 13: Going back to library purchases, this will likely be joining the rotation of shows I'm watching next year. Like XWP, each season's discs have their own color. 'Disc X' formatting is used, with the DVD interior covers listing each disc's contents (episodes & special features). I suppose I'll find out if 'podcast' is the show's term for audio commentary or if it's something else entirely.
I, Claudius: This is borderline, as basically I snagged 5 DVDs for a dollar each at the library sale. Each disc contains a few episodes; for example, disc 1 says "Episodes 1-3". The back of the DVD shows synopses and to the side, it even lists the scene titles. Each disc also has in it a sheet of paper that lists every episode and its scene as well as the segments of the special feature "The Epic That Never Was" which apparently is about an attempt at an earlier adaptation of I, Claudius.
The Muppet Show (1-3): I got this on Saturday at the library for $10. I am weak and had recently gotten early Christmas money from a relative (with the thank you card already sent by then, don't fret). Each disc has a different Muppet image and is numbered along with the episodes numbers ("Disc 1 Episodes 1-6" starts off season 3, for example). There is overlap between seasons (primarily Kermit & Miss Piggy). Seasons 2 & 3 have the same 'episodes sorted by disc with the Guest Star listed' set up on the back of the DVD design. Season 1, however, has a different set-up including a little pamphlet defining the guest stars in which episodes (sorted by disc). All three DVD sets say they're special editions, so I guess it's first season privileges? Even more bewilderingly, the first two seasons have a velvety texture on the sleeve fronts but the third does not.
Pushing Daisies: I bought season 1 last month, and it turns out the discs are designed to resemble pies. How delightful! While a 'Disc X' format is used, the DVD set does come with a pamphlet that lists the episode titles, air dates, and synopses as well as the special features and a cast list. The DVD cover itself is designed to resemble a menu for the Pie Hole. I'll see how the DVDs hold up once I do a re-watch of the show itself, but at a glance it looks to be a balanced blend of whimsy and function!
I did check the third disc for functioning via a peek at a special feature (it discussed deliberately saturating the colors for Pushing Daisies) but I suppose I also should check that the discs for I, Claudius and The Muppet Show still work. They almost certainly do, but it's probably best to check even if neither is on my shortlist. ... Pushing Daisies might, well, push itself on it, though.
All right, that's about it. Okay, maybe it's not every TV season DVD set I have, but this post represents a significant percentage of my collection/hoard.
Now I'm curious: does anyone else have a preferred style for DVD box sets or am I an outlier in collecting so many DVD box sets? It started in large part because of a lack of steady internet, but at this point it's a mix of habit, a dose of skepticism about streaming availability, and a love of special features.
That last one is most likely rooted in the short 'behind the scenes' segments at the end of each Wishbone episode, as I watched a lot of that show among other PBS content as a kid/tween. I do have three episodes on DVD but they don't really qualify to be discussed here as they are more like movie DVDs due to being solo (I do wish that there was a Wishbone DVD box set though).
I know no one besides me asked for this post, especially at this length, but honestly? I had fun making it, which is the important thing. :)

Snowed In (Princess Academy) — PattyCake Productions music video
youtube
The holiday special is a grand, long standing tradition in entertainment, including Disney shows. So what better group to have a wholesome seasonal gathering than the ladies of the Princess Academy? When PattyCake assembled most of their princesses from across the realms for a night of winter magic, not even a vindictive magic-wielding queen could interrupt the festivitives for long.
Details:
title: Princess Academy — s.1, ep.2 — Snowed In
performers: Olivia Adkins (Snow White), Michelle Knight (Evil Queen), Leah Lowman (Cinderella), Britt Nikole (Alice), Anna Ricks (Aurora), Tony Wakim (Merlin), Joy Lynnae (Ariel), Brianna Fogden (Belle), Maggie Wakim (Jasmine / featured vocals), Ciara de Leon (Pocahontas), Cassandra Ariel (Megara / Jasmine stand-in), Raven Wynn (Mulan), Katie Leatherbury (Giselle), Breauna Horsham-Washington (Tiana), Hannah Laird (Charlotte La Bouff / featured vocals), Allee Otwell (Rapunzel), Emily Gorsuch (Merida), McKenzie Helene Callahan (Anna), Elle Forrest (Elsa), Monica Joelle Ortiz (Moana), Jillian Gizzi (stand-in) & Michelle Lindahl Alexander (featured vocals)
songs: "Time of the Year" & "Holiday from the Heart"
written & arranged by: Layne Stein & Tony Wakim
screenplay by: James Keaton, Layne Stein, Tony Wakim, & Eli Jacobson
release date: 13 December 2019
My favorite bits:
Cinderella and Aurora's beautiful harmonies
all the smaller groups entering to converge at the tree
the instrumentation confirming that 🔔 ♫ "bells ring" ♫ 🔔
Merida's commitment to the buffet table
the group of cloistered nerd girls – Ariel, Rapunzel, and Jasmine – writing out holiday cards together
Moana being captivated by the snow through the window
the spellcasters speaking in rhyme
"Only one thing to do now… HEEELP!"
Elsa and Anna decisively leaping into action
Cinderella passing the time and keeping everyone's spirits up with the story
the chastising poke Aurora gives Merida in response to her repeated grumbling
Snow White's continuing apple aversion
the lovely vibratto in Cinderella's solo verse
all of the princesses gathering on the balcony as they sing
Moana's lovely final line

Trivia:
More than a year had passed between the release of the first and second episodes of this series. As Tony and Layne mentioned on their Q&A livestream the previous April, coordinating the schedules of that many cast members is tricky at best.
In the interim, many of the ladies had appeared in PattyCake's version of "Girls Like You" by Maroon 5, and a few were featured in the Villains Lair crossover episode that introduced Megara.
Hannah had played a few background characters and provided vocals for featured characters in the "Unexpected Musicals" series, but playing Charlotte is her first time acting in a named role on screen in a PattyCake project.
The storytime art was created by Tony and their regular collaborator Leon King.
If you watch closely during the wishing star exposition, you can see the boom mic operator reflected in the window behind Rapunzel and Jasmine.
Cassandra borrowed the Belle gown for a cosplay photo shoot two years later.

I'm watching BBC Merlin, and I'm going to finish
But
(major spoilers for up to season 3)
I could have written this so much better and I need to rant
1. Why tf are we not supposed to want Uther dead
2. Why is Morgana evil for wanting to....end a genocide
3. Fatphobia, rampant fatphobia
5. Has Feminist Moments, but then every female character, evil or not, aside from Morgana and Morgause, end up being romantically involved with one of the guys, even if it's in an Evil Temptress way. Because, obviously, how else could a woman think to kill a man?
6. Merlin is so selfish and stupid with the dragon, he always just begs for help then gets mad when the dragon doesn't tell him what he wants to hear, it makes him unlikable
7. Merlin has multiple opportunities to end this reign of genocide and paranoia and he actively doesn't
8. They do the "one step forward, two steps back" thing and that's just lazy writing
9. It's supposed to be episodic adventures and they try to do the sitcom style comedy, and occasionally it works, but it's really not the right tone
10. Why is the main conflict always around death? Please choose something else for once
11. Merlin betrays his fellow sorcerers all the time just by protecting Uther and we're never given a good reason for why
12. "We're just as bad as him if we kill him!" (He commits Genocide)
13. He's a hypocrite who is willing to utilize magic for his own gains, and apparently cheated with his best friend's wife...why are we supposed to feel sympathy for him?
14. Help
