once upon a timeline

okay so i've been obsessed with ouat recently with my rewatch and i was looking into Henry's weird ass family tree and oh my god i need to put this out there because why.

for starters i've only included big plot points or villains and main characters etc so none of the side plots but also i've realised how weird some of the age gaps are.

oh yeah also ouat likes to fuck with their timelines and historical context so i have gone with the basic dates that make sense based on what the characters in the show actually say.

the dates are what they would be in the real world not in ouat logic.

pre-main timeline

Ancient Greece - zeus and hades happen (season 6)

ancient greece but later - orpheus and Euridice and pandora's box happen

between 400-500AD - the Holy Grail and Merlin and Nimue

1650's-1660's - Mother Gothel leaves the new land without magic

1770- Malcolm is Born

1804- Rumplestiltskin is born, Malcolm is 34

1808- Rumple is abandoned, Peter Pan becomes a fae trickster tumblr meme

1845- Baelfire is born, Rumple is 41

1859- Bae arrives in england, Rumple is 55

1947- Zelena is born and abandoned

1948- Cora and Rumple have their weird affair

1949- Regina is born

1955- Snow White is born

1973- Regina sends the huntsman after snow, Snow is 18, Regina is 24

23/3/1977 - Neal (Bae) chooses this as his fake birthday

22/10/1983 - Emma is born, the curse is cast

1991 - Neal escapes neverland and comes back to the land without magic

15/8/2001 - Henry is born, Emma is 18, Neal Cassidy is 24

22/10/2011 - Emma arrives in Storybrooke

so some of the dates are based on when episodes aired and things such as when the curse breaks and when emma arrives in storybrooke. other dates are based on easter eggs in the show like Neal's birthday. so i realised that Neal had to have landed back in the real world in 1991 because he was 14 when he got to neverland and obviously didn't age so working backwards those dates make sense.

however... emma was 17 when she got pregnant with henry and at best Neal is 24 but at worst he's 156 years old! i mean what the fuck. and he has to be that old because he tells Emma that technically "I should be a couple hundred by now" (2,15). so at the oldest he can be with Neal's Once upon a time maths education the earliest he can be born is 1845 because big ben isn't built until 1859 which is the absolute earliest that he can be in old england.

the rest of the dates i managed from working backwards from when the curse was broken and cast and from small things the characters say. In the first episode of season 2, Emma says that her and Mary Margaret were the same age which means that the 10 year war she has with regina that ended with the curse started when she was 18.

so what i've found from this is that Henry's family tree back to his paternal great grandad literally spans hundreds of years. the average life span for these fuckers is about 100. basically they're a family of elves and you can't convince me otherwise.

honestly it’s so frustrating trying to figure out how old pan actually was. my current guess is roughly 250 bc hook once said that he was in neverland for about 200 years and rumple was probably a little over 50 when he killed milah and hook decided to go to neverland and yeah idk. almost feels like too short of a timespan but idk idk. to an extent, any guesses like that are irrelevant because ✨time doesn’t pass in neverland✨ except it kinda does??? like what does it even mean for time not to pass except for that not aging thing???

like it makes so little sense actually. because the dreamshade poison was able to travel through david’s body, so it’s obviously not completely static in terms of bodily functions and metabolism. but also that cut devin got from henry never healed like at all as far as we saw in the show, so it’s obviously not on the same level as in other realms (but then we also only saw devin in one episode so he’s not exactly a good example)

so like my theory is that some type of time has to exist in neverland, otherwise everything would’ve had to have been more static, but the time in neverland is slower or at least seems slower than normal time.

another example for this is imo when wendy spent that one night in neverland the first time and was surprised that she had only been gone for a day bc she thought it was longer.

another question i have here is how old rumple is by the time the neverland arc happens bc he was never really in a situation where time was altered after his first time being on neverland and being in storybrooke (although that’s debatable bc time did still pass there but more in a soft groundhog’s day kinda way and again without aging and everything). bc if we figured out rumple’s age we could also figure out hook’s, baelfire’s, and pan’s ages with at least rough but grounded estimates.

OUAT Rewatch 5x14 - Devil's Due

I do get why the showrunners did what they did with Rumplestiltskin's backstory in regards to his cowardice; first, it's economical, introducing not only the defining incident in his past but also how he gained the ability to see the future, and second, it makes him more sympathetic. All that is true and I respect the decision; however, I think it would have been way more interesting and impactful if he had done something really, truly cowardly. Maybe he meets the seer and she tells him the "your actions will leave him fatherless" line, but he doesn't believe her. Then when he goes into battle, it's absolutely horrific, but victory is still possible—or at least escape for his unit. But in the decisive moment, he can't take it. He abandons his fellow soldiers to death, and one of them strikes a parting blow that cripples him. He goes home in shame and defeat, and has to live not only with his wound and his reputation, but the knowledge of what he's done.

Like I said, I don't mind how they did it, but I feel like it would add greater nuance to the incident and his character as a whole. Like, yeah, Rumple, you are a coward—you did something bad! Understandable, but bad! I can also see a character who has done that being much more liable to descend into villainy like Rumple did. I dunno, I just feel like the show wants it both ways; he does Terrible Villainy but also he was Good Inside All Along.

This would also perform the handy double duty of making Milah more sympathetic, which is also more interesting. I dunno, I just feel like it might have been a more compelling direction if he'd been an honest to goodness coward.

Ngl it's kinda weird that while Rumple is always wearing semi-tattered, dirty homespun in the flashbacks, Milah is dressed pretty nicely. That's not home-made cloth. Her outfits are elaborate for a peasant.

I had originally written A Different Kind of Hook as a oneshot, and then I started planning how to turn it into longer story.

Unfortunately, back then, my fanfic notes were all written down in notebooks, and I've lost most of my OUAT notebooks.

As annoyed as I get by google docs, it's why I primarily use it for both planning and writing fanfics these days. It's connected to all of my devices (laptop, desktop, phone, and ipad)

Season 2 Rewatch Drabbles: 2x4 The Crocodile

Summary: A series of 100-500 word drabbles to accompany my rewatch of season 2 of Once Upon a Time as an attempt to finally jump start the muse again.  There will be a drabble–either a deleted scene, a “fix it” fic or a character musing for each episode of the season.  Focus will be on Emma, Henry, the Charmings and Killian–with an emphasis on the very beginnings of Captain Swan’s epic love story, as soon as a certain dashing pirate makes his appearance.

A man unwilling to fight for what he wants deserves what he gets.

As Killian arrived at the designated duel sight just as dawn began to paint the eastern sky with lovely pinks and purples, his words from years ago rang in his ears.  Back then he’d been faced with a coward, a pitiful excuse for a man, someone who had not even the courage to fight for his wife when she was threatened with a fate worse than death.

He’d never have harmed Milah, of course, and any of his men who had attempted to do so would have been dealt with swiftly and mercilessly, but his ruse served to point out in glaring detail just how correct Milah had been about the character of her husband.

They’d had a decade together, happy years full of travel and adventure.  They’d fallen in love, and he’d never know how very pleasant it could be to be so completely united to another person.

But she’d had her moments of agony and doubt as well, wondering if she’d done the right thing, leaving her husband and especially her lad.  From time to time she’d even considered going back to him, not out of any sense of love, but out of a sense of duty and maternal instincts.  He’d always convinced her to stay, terrified of the prospect of losing someone who had become as much a part of him as his left hand itself.

But he’d hated himself for asking it of her.  He knew what it was like to be a child abandoned by a parent, and the fact that he was partially the cause of it was bitter gall to him.

When he’d come face to face with the man—or whatever manner of creature he now was—yesterday within this very alley, it had been driven home to him with startling clarity just how right he’d been to allow Milah passage on his ship and his protection.

Should the Crocodile find a way to force Milah back to him, she would no longer face misery alone, she would face danger, and that Killian could never abide.

And so, before the dawn he’d slipped silently from their bed, kissed a still slumbering Milah with muttered words of love, and then came to face his own fate.

For he’d heard tales of the Dark One, tales so dark and disturbing they could freeze a man’s blood within his veins, but Killian Jones was no coward.  He would fight to protect the one he loved to the death, and would no doubt come to that.  Proficient as he was with the sword, Killian had no illusions he had the skill to defeat an enemy with unlimited power and magic.

He was more than willing to fight for what he wanted, and if death was what he got in return, so be it.
