I think it's super important to call out racist tropes in fanon, but I also think it's important to help provide a bit of education so other creators know how to avoid these tropes and what to do instead.
With that in mind, one of the most common things that us fans of color have been pointing out in the OFMD fandom is racist depiction of Ed's hair, so here's an intro to avoiding some of these harmful tropes and what you can do instead.
Why does Ed's hair matter so much?
For people of color like Ed, our hair isn't just hair. Our hair is also about our culture and self-expression, and taking care of our hair is a skill distinct from caring for White hair. Our hair is an expression of personal and communal identity.
Controlling and stigmatizing hairstyles is an important way that people of color have been and continue to be oppressed. Across the history of European colonization, you'll find countless stories of cruelties such as forced haircuts, and this legacy lives on today when kids of color are told they have to change their natural and cultural hairstyles to meet school dress codes. Depiction of hair matters so much because of this history.
What are some things to avoid?
Common racist depictions of Ed's hair that you will want to avoid include:
Depicting Ed's hair as dirty and unclean when he's always shown to have very neat, well-taken-care-of hair in the show
Implying that he does not know how to care for his hair
Implying that he needs a White man to help him take care of his hair (White guys are not going to know how to care for Ed's hair texture!)
Depicting him using items that aren't meant for haircare on his hair (like forks, broken tools, etc.). Ed surely knows what a hairbrush is and how to use one.
Implying that Ed does not have a hair care routine or care much about his personal hygeine. You do not get to have that much beautiful, well-groomed hair without caring about maintaining it.
Implications that Ed is unusually rough/thoughtless about his hair, such as cutting off tangled sections or leaving knots to get worse
Avoid language that implies Ed's hair is unusually unruly and unkempt, such as describing it as "matted." Personally, I even bristle hearing it described as a "mane" or "wild" because it's always very neatly-groomed.
What are some ways to talk about Ed's hair that are okay?
I recommend writers and artists considering a project involving Ed's hair do some research on their own - browsing natural hair care subreddits is a pretty easy way to learn quickly what goes into caring for our hair and some of the common everyday struggles we might have.
You don't need to depict Ed's hair as perfect all the time! On lazy days where he doesn't style his hair, he might have frizz going on, and he might be frustrated by the effort and time it takes to maintain his hair while they're on the ocean and the salt air is constantly wreaking havoc.
It's also okay to write about Stede helping Ed with his hair. Stede will need to learn how to work with Ed's hair, but there's nothing wrong with scenes where Stede helps Ed with putting his hair up into a fancy style or washes it for him just because they both want to spend time together. The issue arises when you have implications that Ed needs that help and isn't capable of caring for his hair on his own.
What are some ideas for scenes involving Ed's hair care and routines?
There are so many wonderful scenes you can write about Ed's hair care routines! They can add dimension to domestic moments and make Ed's life feel more real. Here are some ideas I love.
Stede being excited to find new hair products at the market he knows Ed will love
The men of color on the Revenge having self-care nights to help each other care for their hair and skin
Ed patiently teaching Stede about how to care for his hair and trusting him to help him wash it
Ed having fun after settling down at their inn with experimenting with fun floral scents in his hair products
Ed teaching Stede how to put his hair in an elaborate, fancy style passed down from his mother
Stede carefully writing down Ed's hair care routine, from how he likes to rinse his hair with cool freshwater after a swim in the ocean to how he uses coconut oil to minimize frizz, and Ed being touched by his obvious care
In the show, Ed's hair looks amazing even at his lowest moments, so you could make art of him finding comfort in his hair even in the darkest times
There's so much you can do! I'd love seeing the balance of fics about Ed's hair shift towards mostly loving, thoughtful, non-racist depictions, so let's make that happen!

This will probably be my most controversial Homelander take:
As a black woman, TV!Homelander is accidentally the most "black man" coded white male character I've ever seen.
My reasoning and analysis is under the cut.
Let me preface that I'm aware that the subtext and mirroring I'm about to explain is likely not intentional in any way, shape, or form. Take this for the speculation and art analysis it is. This is also not Homelander apologia.
Warning: includes discussion of racial violence and SA.
Okay so. I'm one of those people who thinks that the Trump comparisons aren't correct. It's dead wrong. It's the writers and marketing clumsily trying to advertise the show by lampooning the conservatives. So, just leave the Homelander = Trump shit at the door.
1. His Dehumanization
It's no secret how much violence and dehumanization minorities go through. I'm going to elaborate on the specific markers of black male dehumanization.
Throughout European history the depiction and treatment of the black man has been "animal" and all the connotations that come with that word.
Violent. Stud. Low intelligence.
Black men were literally seen as not human. The idea of a black man having personhood would have genuinely been laughable to consider to whites in earlier history. They were no better than bulls.
Made to work. Made to breed. Made to be owned.
Homelander, like black men, never got the keys to "humanity." He was dehumanized before he was even a thought. A product of a "bull" that was so called "good stock" (Soldier Boy).
He was raised in isolation and abused by his owners to be ready to make his owners profit. His body was never his own. He's an asset. A product.
2. False/Conditional Privilege
Cut now to him debuting as The Homelander. Homelander is shallowly privileged by his looks and celebrity the same way black performers, particularly athletes, are: as long as they do the job. "Shut up and play, boy."
These teams are usually "owned" by rich white men. The black athlete should never do anything else but what they're paid to do. If they just do their job they get the conditional keys to "white male privilege." But only if they perform and never cause a stir or "take a knee."
During this time Homelander is groomed, intentionally and unintentionally, into what he is by everyone around him who only see him as a tool. And Homelander tries to always be "valued" in the public because what else does he have?
3. The Predatory Black Man Trope and "Jeromes" and "Tyrones"
Note: this section is likely reaching a little, take it with lots of salt.
This next section discusses the whole Becca thing.
Let the record show that I know and understand that Becca was raped. Full stop. I have some thoughts as to how much Homelander is aware of the gravity of what he did since he's a giant toddler whose moral compass has been made to point straight down to hell but it's obvious he does not care about how much he hurt her.
The show just puts some weird ass ambiguity around the whole incident. They don't really go into the specifics, we can only guess his motivations based on other women he's "been" with. And considering he legit didn't understand that Stillwell felt nothing but fear for him and he has no understanding of relationships or boundaries and his love for dominance due to deep insecurity he could totally think, in his fucked up mind, that he didn't do anything wrong.
"She's just a human, who cares? They use me, I use them." - Homelander, probably.
I just want it clear that I'm not exonerating him or minimizing Becca's hurt in this next section.
Anyway, this Becca situation loosely mirrors the "black men, "Jeromes" or "Tyrones" as some racists call them, are predators that prey on or seduce white women and give their husbands mixed babies" stereotype. And Butcher's hatred for Homelander never seems to be for Becca's sake. It's selfish, singly focused and possibly includes guilt and a sore ego.
It's also bigoted.
Superpowers or not supes are kind of minority coded like the X-Men. Think of them as an intersectional category like minorities that are rich or people with disabilities that need less support than people with more severe disabilities. Like sure, they'll like fair better in the current system but
The rich minority is still a minority.
The disabled person with less support needs is still disabled.
Vought (the elites) more or less run supes and they are assets. Many of them were injected with compound V as children by greedy or hopeful parents coerced by capitalism so it's a systemic issue.
It speaks to Butcher's character that Becca ran to Vought of all places and didn't tell her husband. He hates supes that much.
Homelander is then kept from that son like black men have been separated from their families, even after black men were no longer forcibly taken as away as slaves they were forced away by welfare policy that would only support black women if they weren't married. It was more feasible to never marry your man and tell welfare you were single because he didn't earn enough to take care of the family.
And likely Vought would have continued the cycle of violence with Ryan if Homelander had not found him. Vought wasn't gonna keep Becca and Ryan safe for free, I assure you.
4. He'll Never Be A "Real Man"
Homelander also occupies that "never quite a man" category that black men are put in. They're painted as dangerous and virile. They're "men" when they're a threat. Yet also belittled and never afforded real manhood. A "boy" when they're being looked down on. "Boy" is a touchy word for black men for this reason. It has as much history and hurt to them as more obvious slurs.
Homelander is lied to and belittled by Vought ofc. He's denied true manhood like them but is made to perform it to a cartoonish degree that I would argue he's actually not happy with. If Vought exists, he will never be free and will never live in genuine peace because his crimes will follow him. Ruling the world would be his only option and that would only "fix" so much.
They made sure he has no real tools or skills to actually run things effectively (he's confused during board meetings and doesn't understand shit). He was purposely made too intellectually incurious and emotionally stunted to truly learn (he deflects and gets angry). He's actually surprisingly inept in some ways. His only skill is that he's scary and dangerous.
High intelligence and manipulation are usually put down as his skills and like sure, he's far from dumb and he's really sneaky. Everyone around him is the most morally fucked liar to ever exist...but I'm gonna be real: his manipulation is not that impressive. Most of it is just intimidation. Folks don't wanna get lasered.
So, he substitutes this denied agency and lack applied skills with hyper violence, materialism, flashiness, cockiness, etc.
A "thug," basically.
"Thugs" are usually just young black men clamoring for real manhood in a world that will never give it to them so they sometimes turn to these things in disenfranchisement. Sometimes they become cops for the same reason.
5. "The Boys," as A Phrase Makes Me Think of Lynch Mobs
This one is pretty subjective so take it with salt as well.
"The boys" is harkening to calling for one's group. And due to Butcher's hard on for killing supes because of his hatred with his group it kind of puts me in the mind of posses of white men that would be informally gathered (sometimes even aided by law enforcement) to enact "retribution" on black men and boys "who have stepped out of line." See Emmet Till.
"Round up the boys, we're gonna hang us a..."
You know the rest.
If Butcher was fully depicted as the morally fucked protag he is in the comics this wouldn't bother me, thematically it would fit. But they hedge on Butcher's morality a little, making him less of a genuine bastard and more like someone with lapsed judgment or faculties who's the "lesser of two evils" so it's just uncomfortable.
Anyway, that's it. I'm just fascinated by the unintentional mirroring. This is likely why, even though Homelander is who he is, women, queer people and POC have a complex love/fascination for him. The only thing that makes him so hard to sympathize with is that his crimes are particularly abhorrent and physically he's more powerful than anyone else and a genuine threat.
I've never been so afraid to hit "Post" in my LIFE.

The average woman spends -
• $28 on makeup
• $34 on haircuts
• $15 on hair products
• $11 on hair removal
• $23 on moisturizing skincare
•$17 on anti-aging products
• $ 5 on eyebrow threading
• $85 on teeth whitening
■The cost of common cosmetic surgeries:
• Breast augmentation: $6,450
• Liposuction: $6,000
• Nose reshaping: $5,046
• Eyelid surgery: $4,525
• Tummy tuck: $5,798
● The yearly cost of getting a botox : $1200 ● The yearly cost of getting lip fillers : $800
□Yearly cost without Botox/fillers/surgery: $2616
□ Yearly cost with Botox/fillers/surgery $4891
In a study by Advanced Dermatology, it was revealed that the average woman spends $285 more than men on grooming services. While men spend more on gym membership, supplements and haircuts, women spend on skincare, hair products and colour.
If you compound the aboves costs, women spend - $156,960 and $450,420 respectively on unnecessary beauty procedures in their lifetime. Some women might even spend millions of dollars in their lifetime on their appearance. This extra expenditure feeds pockets of (male) CEOs of beauty companies who thrive off of women's insecurities. The more women fall into these traps, the more unrealistic the beauty standards will become.
● Meadian House cost - $227,000
● Average car cost - $48,000
● Average Overseas Vacation cost - $3250
● Cost of a nice hobby in a lifetime - $72,000
●Cost of a book collection(150 books) - $1800
Making women waste money on useless items allows men to hoard capital. Moreover, there is a huge gender gap in trading. Men are much more likely to invest extra income into the stock market than women, however, when women do invest they tend to perform much better when it comes to trading owing to their diligence and loss assessment.Female ownership of monetary property and real estate is paramount to their liberation. Society has created an ecosystem that dissuades women from possessing capital. What's worse is that when crisis hits, it's women that have to give up their savings for their need of money is disregarded as they rely on their husbands for financial support. Women amassing wealth and knowledge is the key for their freedom.

THE CROWN'S WHORE | CHAPTER TWO
WARNING: sexual content, addictions, incest (we're talking about Targaryens here) grooming, manipulations, dark themes, and possibly more
She trembled at the foot of the bed, and clearly had already been passed between several of her older friends. At least, he prayed that it was her friends who touched her in such a way. They would not be cruel and savage with her. He hoped they wouldn't.
Her hair was messed, no longer the smooth cascade of silvery strands, and some bite marks ran up along the length of her neck.
Ariston painfully swallowed the pit of anxiety. "Are you well, Vyera?"
She shrugged and rubbed her arms.
He closed the distance between them. Her eyes still bore into the creaky floorboards. He rested his hands on her shoulders, inciting a sharp jolt from Vyera. "We do not have "
"Aye, we do." She sniffled and rubbed at her eyes. "My worth will be determined by how much I break-in, through all means. Especially with my... capabilities."
Ariston sighed. He did not comprehend much of the workings within the brothel, yet what she said made sense. Within the markets, if a product does not produce much, it will likely be dropped and abandoned to be replaced by a higher sale. As much as it pained him to make such a comparison, Vyera became a product for many cruel individuals to enjoy themselves.
If all of her friends could afford it, they could keep such individuals away from her. Yet... Something whispered doubts in his ear.
Commoners rarely made enough money to afford who sex workers, especially those who work within the Crimson Whores brothel. A vast majority of her companions were commoners. Those who were of a higher class could only spend so many coins on her. They all had duties regrettably to tend to, so they may bear enough coin to shower on her.
"Very well," he said. His heart banged against his stomach like a raging beast. "We can start "
"Now."
This time Ariston flinched.
Vyera grabbed his wrists and dragged him to the bed. He fell onto the bed and let her lead. Ariston was not aware of how the other boys did it, but he let her have control of this at the very least. She smiled at him.
She looked down at his clothes, a silent command. As he began to undress, she slid her dress off to pool at her feet.
Her hands wandered up his arms, along the width of his shoulders, and down his chest, inciting chills and warmth toiled in his stomach. Vyera crawled up the bed to straddle him. She loomed over him and pressed her lips against his.
Disgust looped around his throat like a noose. He could not be actually enjoying this.
Her lips molded around his, her tongue slithered in between and rubbed along his own. Ariston moaned.
Fuck. He was enjoying this.
He was a fucking... He did not even have the words to describe what he was. He was doing the exact thing he feared grown men would enjoy doing with her.
She was a kid, and he was enjoying feeling her hands explore his body the same way an artist would explore their canvas, her tongue massaging his mouth, and her smell... her taste.. her touch... the sounds she made...
Fuck.
Ariston lay dazed beneath her, his mind a fuddled mess.
Vyera nuzzled her face into the crook of his neck, curling into herself. He reacted the same way all the other boys did: Half wanting, half repulsed with themselves. They pushed and pulled at her, some bit at her flesh before jerking back in shock with themselves.
She almost pitied them.
They were all young. Some were only thirteen while others were a few years older than that. They certainly had their fun with whores older than themselves, but never have they ever experienced the conflicting emotions warring within them in such intensity. In this, they were fumbling like virgins as she fiddled with them the same way she'd fiddle with a spare pawn in her hand while she played chess with one of her father's coworkers.
He had been... thirty if her memory still served well. She'd been seventeen when they'd met.
He was everything she found attractive in men that she couldn't find in the boys of her old world: Smart, handsome, and strong. He was skilled in his work and smart enough to humor her with their games. Of course, over time their games became less innocent. Her cunt clenched and tingled in recall of their time together.
Sure, he wasn't the only one. She never could settle for one. But regardless of that, he sent a thrill through her bones few could accomplish.
Vyera sighed and held Ariston closer. "Are you alright, Riz?"
"Huh?"
He blinked awake and focused on her. There it was again. The conflict in his eyes.
"You seem..." she hesitated, abusing her lip. His gaze flickered to them and he sharply inhaled. "Off. Did I do something wrong?"
"No! Certainly not, you were incredible Wait, no, I mean " Ariston tripped and stumbled over his words for a quick minute. A devilish grin wished to curl on Vyera's lip but she quickly suppressed it in favor of a more concerned expression. She worked on her reputation for nine years. She wasn't about to let one slip up to ruin everything. She laid back down and hid her face into his neck. They had a few more minutes before he had to leave.
He sighed, patting her head stiffly. "Tis' nothing."
Vyera nearly scoffed at that. As if she was going to believe that. However, she didn't wish to scare off one of her many useful associates. If her plans with her father fall through, she'll need more than one lord to arrange for her escape from the squander of this forsaken brothel. King's Landing smelled as bad as it was written, and her nose likely died in order to tolerate the odor.
If the world thought she was going to remain, they were sorely mistaken.
"Are you sure?"
"Aye," Ariston murmured. "Simply running through my thoughts."
More like running from them.

Your Guide To The Latest Trends Dominating Cosmetic Dermatology
The cosmetic industry is growing rapidly and the study of aesthetic sciences has to evolve alongside. The top schools of cosmetology are deploying advanced methodologies and technologies to cater to the prevailing cosmetic market demands, bringing about a transformational change in beauty education. While exploring the latest trends influencing cosmetology courses, let us remember that these developments are not only about fashion but also about empowering the future generation of beauticians. We will now delve deeper into the emerging trends in aesthetic medicine education.
1)Technologies are being integrated
Technology is playing a key role in cosmetic dermatology courses. The various cosmetology institutes are using a combination of hands-on training and technological approaches. Virtual reality and AI-based tools are being used for training the budding beauty professionals. Also, students are getting training on advanced treatments, such as laser hair removal, micro-needling, and chemical peels.
2)Focus on Sustainability is only rising
There is growing awareness about ecological concerns, which has brought sustainability to the fore in the cosmetology industry. That’s why many dermatology institutes are promoting eco-friendly practices, which include initiatives such as zero waste policy, recycling, and environment-friendly products.
3)Natural and Organic Products are much in demand
The demand for natural and organic products is rising significantly. Consumers are moving away from products containing harsh chemicals and embracing sustainably sourced beauty products. Tapping into this market by offering healthier alternatives and eco-friendly products is the way ahead.
4)Personalized Training is Taking Over
Each student has their own way of learning and they come with various education goals. That’s why more and more cosmetology courses are shifting towards personalized learning approaches. This makes it possible for the budding dermatologists to align their education with their career aspirations. Depending on whether they want to specialize in makeup, hair styling, or skincare, they can pursue the chosen streams.
5)Soft Skills are Getting Priority
Cosmetology training is focusing more on developing the various soft skills of students. Leadership, communication and client service skills are gaining prominence in beauty education. Besides becoming technically proficient, graduates are learning about how to maintain relationships with customers to drive their businesses to success.
6)Global Outlook is becoming important
Dermatology institutes have started embracing a global perspective nowadays. Doing so has become important because beauty trends transcend boundaries, regions, and cultures. Learners are now studying international techniques, standards, and beauty products, driving them to become global leaders in the world of fashion.
7)Holistic Wellness is gaining prominence
Intertwining beauty with overall wellness is now the way forward. The curriculums of the aesthetic medicine courses have started incorporating holistic wellness programs. This way, they are highlighting the importance of mental and physical health, helping to attain individualized beauty goals.
8)Industry Collaborations are becoming Stronger
Educational institutions and the cosmetic industry are collaborating much more. Guest lectures by industry leaders are being organized frequently. Also, students are getting internship opportunities with reputed salons. This approach of the cosmetology institutes to provide real-world exposure ensures that the students receive a good balance of hands-on experience and theoretical studies via experiential learning.
9)Men’s Grooming is growing in popularity
The market for men’s grooming is steadily rising and there is higher demand for grooming services catering to the menfolk. Hence, many cosmetology colleges are offering specialized courses in men’s grooming services, which include beard trimming and hair styling.
10)Specialized Services are getting precedence
The beauty industry is fiercely competitive, which is why it becomes important to differentiate your business from others. A good way of setting yourself apart from your competitors is by providing specialized services to serve specific niches. Hair extensions, skincare, and bridal makeup are some specializations you can dabble in.
11)Continuing Education is Key
Remaining competitive in the beauty industry is vital to survive. New technologies and techniques will keep emerging. This makes it important to stay updated on the latest practices and trends. Therefore, cosmetic dermatology institutes encourage students to continue their training and practice to keep up with fashion and serve their clientele better.

The Hyuna news is upsetting but also nothing new. There's a pattern of women who are upheld as feminist that turn around and date/marry shady men. It's a complex but systemic issue that I wanted to dissect to propose a productive and feminist way to approach these situations.
1. The Root Cause (Patriarchy)
I get we don't want to give these women any room for excuses when it feels like they've thrown women under the bus but we still have to recognize that although they have unique privileges and are still accountable for their actions, they're also victims of the patriarchy.
We have to recognize that these women are the subjects of a predatory industry and most of them were groomed by it. They're highly isolated and honestly, most of the men they share a career and social circle with are the Junhyung types.
Just like how misogyny and rape culture is still normalized for us common folk, it's fervent in the celebrity sphere where the men have even more power and privileges to abuse. Understanding that, it isn't surprising how shady men have access to these socially isolated women.
2. Placid Feminism
These women live in a bubble and a lot of the feminist action they've seemingly done never extended outside themselves in actuality. I don't deny the possibility they genuinely consider themselves to be feminists because at least for some of them, the issues they've talked about came from personal experience.
The issue comes in on how placid and underdeveloped their feminist values are that they don't think to look for those virtues in romantic partners. It brings into question if they even addressed their partner's past actions and social values or if they just "enjoy each other's company". It becomes even more shallow when these female celebrities revoke their feminist fanbase by doubling down rather than acknowledging the issue. That simply, feminism isn't relevant in the dating scene.
3. Rose Tinted Glasses
How much of a feminist was Hyuna really? Her song Babe was believed to be about the sexualization of minors due to the music video but when you actually read the lyrics, it's really just a love song that romanticizes youth.
Many female artists put out a consumable "girl boss" aesthetic of feminism while their music still revolves around the affection and pleasure of men. A lot of the sexual liberation these women have been praised for actually fails to challenge the status quo and ultimately caters to men and their unrealistic and predatory expectations of beauty and sex. We then have to consider what these women have done for us outside sexy girl-power beats and sadly, it's not much.
We've seen these women being beaten down by misogyny and rise from the ashes and we made it feminist. Their actions felt empowering and radical even when they were just doing it for themselves. We witness their liberation and then seek that these women are activists. The feminist iconography they market at us fulfills our confirmation bias and we hail them as a "girl's girl".
Although I don't blame this on fans when the celebrities literally pink wash their image, it's also important we deepen our own understanding and standards of feminism. We can feel empowered by their work but we shouldn't put these celebrities on a pedestal when they're frankly not doing as much as they actually can be. There are social activists out there who are facing the brunt of the movement, who actually make it their mission to liberate all women and marginalized people. We have to differentiate between an entertainer and an activist. We have to hold celebrities to a standard of basic human decency and activism but we mustn't be impressed by shallow gestures of feminism.

I asked ChatGPT why beauty is gendered in the US and it spat straight facts and I can’t keep this to myself-
“The association of beauty with femininity rather than masculinity has deep cultural, historical, and social roots. Beauty, as a concept, has been gendered in many societies, including in the USA, where it is primarily linked with women and femininity. However, this isn’t inevitable, and in some cultures or historical periods, beauty has been valued in both men and women. To understand why this association exists and what changes would be needed to broaden the concept of beauty to include masculinity, let’s explore several key factors:
Why Beauty is Primarily Associated with Femininity:
1. Historical Gender Roles and Aesthetics:
• Historically, gender roles have shaped societal expectations around appearance. Women were often valued for their aesthetic appeal, while men were valued for their strength, power, and productivity. This division is deeply rooted in patriarchal societies where women’s roles were often tied to domesticity, nurturing, and pleasing men, while men were expected to be providers, protectors, and warriors.
• In many cultures, women were seen as the bearers of beauty and grace, with art, literature, and fashion focused heavily on the female form. Think of how many classical art forms, including Renaissance painting or Greek sculpture, glorify the beauty of the female body. This has contributed to an enduring association between femininity and beauty.
2. Marketing and Consumer Culture:
• In the modern world, advertising and consumer culture have reinforced the idea that beauty is primarily a feminine trait. The beauty industry—encompassing cosmetics, skincare, fashion, and personal care—has traditionally targeted women, promoting ideals of physical beauty and often equating a woman’s value with her appearance. This is seen in everything from makeup commercials to fitness advertisements aimed at women.
• Meanwhile, marketing for men has historically emphasized strength, utility, and ruggedness. Men’s grooming and fashion industries, until recently, focused more on functionality than aesthetics, framing masculinity in terms of practical power rather than physical allure.
3. Beauty as Passive vs. Masculinity as Active:
• Another reason beauty has been tied to femininity is that beauty is often seen as a passive quality—something to be admired or appreciated—whereas traditional masculinity is framed as active, involving strength, assertiveness, or action. In gendered terms, men are traditionally expected to “do,” while women are expected to “be” (beautiful, gentle, nurturing).
• The idea of men being “admired” for their beauty can seem incongruous in cultures where masculinity is tied to action, competition, and production rather than aesthetics. This contributes to the idea that beauty is primarily a feminine characteristic.
4. Fragile Masculinity and Gender Norms:
• Cultural expectations around masculinity also play a role. In many societies, including the USA, masculinity is often framed as something that needs to be proven or protected. Men who are seen as too focused on beauty or appearance risk being labeled as “effeminate” or even face questioning of their sexuality. These rigid gender norms make it harder for men to openly embrace beauty or be appreciated for their physical aesthetics without challenging their masculinity.
• This can lead to a societal double standard where women are encouraged to beautify themselves, but men are discouraged from doing the same. Thus, beauty becomes something primarily associated with femininity.
What Would Need to Change for Beauty to be Associated with Both Masculinity and Femininity in the USA:
1. Broader Definitions of Masculinity:
• One of the most fundamental shifts would be a broadening of the definition of masculinity to include traits like vulnerability, aesthetics, and beauty. The hegemonic masculinity that prioritizes strength, control, and dominance would need to make space for other expressions of masculinity—those that embrace creativity, aesthetic appeal, and self-care without undermining a man’s identity.
• Encouraging men to explore their own sense of beauty, whether through grooming, fashion, or self-expression, without fear of ridicule or loss of social status, would be key to breaking down rigid gender norms.
2. Cultural Representation of Men as Beautiful:
• The media plays a massive role in shaping societal values. If men were represented as beautiful—without qualifying it as being “for women” or “for a purpose”—this could shift perceptions of beauty as inherently feminine.
• We would need to see more male beauty in movies, advertisements, fashion, and art, where male bodies and appearances are admired not for being strong or rugged but for being beautiful in their own right. This includes depictions of men in roles where softness, aesthetic refinement, or even emotional beauty are celebrated, not seen as emasculating.
3. Expanding the Beauty Industry to Include Men:
• While the beauty industry has historically targeted women, there is a growing trend toward men’s grooming and skincare, but it is often framed in terms of functionality (e.g., “look sharp” for a job interview, “stay fit” for athleticism). For beauty to be more inclusive of men, the beauty industry would need to market aesthetic enjoyment and self-care for men in a way that is not purely utilitarian.
• Creating spaces in beauty, fashion, and personal care industries where men are encouraged to explore beauty for its own sake—rather than to fit societal molds of productivity or masculinity—would help break down the association of beauty with femininity alone.
4. Redefining Beauty as Universal:
• Culturally, we would need to shift the perception of beauty from being a gendered trait to being a human trait. This would involve promoting the idea that beauty exists in all people, regardless of gender. Just as many now accept that intelligence or creativity isn’t gendered, beauty too could be seen as something universal.
• Movements that promote body positivity and diversity already do some of this work by highlighting that beauty isn’t limited to narrow ideals, but more would be needed to include men in this conversation. There would need to be a rethinking of what is considered beautiful across the gender spectrum.
5. Challenging Fragile Masculinity and Homophobia:
• One of the largest barriers to associating beauty with masculinity is the fear that doing so would feminize men or call their sexuality into question. In the USA, gender norms are often policed in ways that associate beauty and self-care with gay men or men seen as outside the bounds of traditional masculinity.
• For beauty to be seen as a trait of masculinity, we would need to challenge fragile masculinity—the idea that masculinity is so precarious it can be threatened by something as simple as admiring a man’s beauty. This would require pushing back against homophobia and gender rigidity, promoting more flexible understandings of gender expression.
6. Historical Examples of Masculine Beauty:
• Another powerful cultural shift would be to draw on historical examples where men’s beauty was celebrated. Ancient Greek culture, for instance, revered the beauty of the male form in both art and philosophy. Similarly, during the European Renaissance, male beauty was often idealized in art and literature. Drawing attention to these historical precedents could help reframe beauty as not inherently feminine, but something that men have also embodied and embraced throughout history.
• This historical awareness could provide men with a sense of heritage in embracing beauty, making it feel less like a modern or “feminizing” trend.
Conclusion:
For beauty to be seen as both a masculine and feminine trait in the USA, cultural changes would need to challenge rigid gender norms and expand the definitions of both masculinity and beauty. The media, beauty industry, and social perceptions of gender roles would need to evolve to embrace the idea that beauty is universal, not inherently tied to one gender. Encouraging men to explore their own beauty, expanding media representation, and promoting flexible gender expressions would all help shift the cultural association of beauty from being primarily feminine to being a shared human experience.”

i cant get over it. why dont impoverished men choose to enter prostitution en masse?
a) „there are not enough women who want to buy sex so there is no market“
so you agree that prostitution is a system that mostly benefits men, as sex buyers? incheresting
b) „there are not enough women and they are not gay or bisexual“
so you agree that sex is not a service? the sexed body is the product? incheresting
c) „they have an easier time getting a job on the regular job market“
so you agree that prostitution profits from and reinforces misogyny? its not just a neutral job choice? incheresting
d) „they are often single mothers who need flexible work hours and get discriminated against on the job market“
oh so you again agree that prostitution profits from and reinforces misogyny? that single fathers are more rare and have better job opportunities? which pushes women into sexual exploitation? incheresting
e) „women dont have any other options“
so you agree that women are systematically groomed into prostitution, kept from exiting and kept from entering other fields where impoverished men find jobs? incheresting
f) „women choose prostitution over other options“
so you again agree that women are systematically groomed into prostitution, kept from exiting and kept from entering other fields where impoverished men find jobs? because why arent men choosing it if it offers such great benefits? incheresting
i just dont buy the „no alternatives“ argument. there are alternatives but impoverished women are systematically pushed into prostitution by their families and partners, by social workers and feminists telling them its a choice without questioning why men dont choose it, by employers who know this is a last resort for women and choose to employ men instead, and there is no pushback because the men as a class also profit from prostitution, as sex buyers and competitors on the regular job market.
and then we are being pitched that these women actually have no options? be for real
of course women will say its their choice if they are being told from all sides and are systematically kept from pursuing other options.

Inside the gold box is...
...a male grooming kit. From VoxTek.
It's got shavers (with spare razor blades), shaving cream, shampoos, conditioners, shower gels, deodorants, soap bars, hand wash, lotions, suncream, sunglasses, a sunhat, a beach towel with a picture of Valentino in a mankini, toothbrushes, toothpaste, nail clippers, and a couple of washcloths with the Triple V monogram. Quite a lot is stuffed into that box.
The accompanying brochure shares some marketing spiel:
"Many men desire to look good for their special lady. Or gentleman. Or non-binary joyfriend. That's why we at VoxTek have cultived this extra-special summer care package!
It's our little way of saying thank you for being a loyal customer/employee/target practice for Valentino [delete as applicable]. As the hot summer months roll in for those in the northern hemisphere, we want to make your stay in Hell just that little bit sunnier!
VoxTek! Trust us with your body!"
The smaller text at the bottom reads, "Additional blades, lotions, and Valentino mankini towels sold separately. VoxTek cannot and will not be held responsible for any cuts, bruises, burns, loss of limb, dry skin, rashes, rotting teeth, stomach cramps, chickenpox, decapitations, relationship breakdown, or hilariously bad hairstyles that may occur while using VoxTek products."
There's a bonus present at the bottom too - a stuffed toy deer that's covered in red paint and has loads of pins sticking into it. The tag reads,
"Angel.
Give this to Alastor. Tell him he smells like an elephant's butt.
Vox.
P.S. Val says I'm hotter than you."
Upon finding the grooming paraphernalia within, Angel was pleasantly surprised. He had half expected this to be some kind of prank, orchestrated by someone who wanted to take him down a peg or two. Of course, curiosity still outweighed the potential risk - as always. And this time, it appeared to have paid off.
Raking through the items, he unfurled the towel and was met with the image of his bikini'd boss posing seductively - and promptly rolled it back up. Yeah, Niffty could have that one for cleaning rags. Or maybe Cherri would come over and burn it with him. It would be equally fun to see the moth cut to pieces and dunked in bleach as it would be to see him burnt to cinders.
As for the... other gift. There was no way Angel was giving that to Alastor. He was 99% sure it contained some kind of camera or microphone, but he wasn't about to start squeezing the pin-laden plush to find out.
He rolled his eyes at the final message. There was no doubt in his mind that no such words had been spoken, and Vox simply wanted to use this gift as an opportunity throw shade at Angel and Alastor - his two most detested hotel residents!
Who he went to the bother of sending gifts to.
What a freak.
