How the Night Ends

I didn't say sunrise, with its chatter song and watery light, that stretch in the bedsheets. I took the slighter sight, gave up sleep to see the last bewildering second of night, when dawn

inhales but holds its breath. Nothing breaking yet. Let's say it isn't the sun that snuffs out starlight. Let's say twinkling ceases first, flips its own switch with its own hand.

Imagine that volition. Understand-- in this version, night never touches day, never boards the vessel that churns toward that other landing, distant fire. Like night and day, we say,

when what we mean is changed, when what we are is rocked back by the force of a thing become another thing entire. I get it. But what about night not as origin story for some other hero, not

the hunger that reaches for honey, but wanting itself, unconsummate. Let's say you drop a stone into the lake and the waves it makes don't loosen, never lap the shore. Never mind aubade.

Forget aftermath and antecedent. I didn't ask for more, for morning. Or night never ending or the stopped clock. But I took every bit there was of dark. Night ends, I learned, lightless as it starts.

Status Post #11353: Forget the recent film, the source material should get a new TV series adaptation, this time animation and I think we're long overdue for a female character taking on the mantle outside the Stairway to Heaven TV series with Hannah Foster (though she went by the name Talon) and comics plus there were plans for Sarah to become one in City of Angels.
