Did you know Marvin Gaye tried out for the Detroit Lions in 1970? Along with music, Marvin Gaye had a passion for sports. His two close friends, Mel Farr and Lem Barney, played for the Lions at the time and were able to set up a meeting between Gaye and the team's head coach, Joe Schmidt. Marvin Gaye confidently told Coach Schmidt that he would score a touchdown the first time he touched the ball, despite having never played on a football team before. He took on a vigorous workout regimen to prepare, and Coach Schmidt let him try out for several positions on the team. Although Marvin Gaye was not offered a spot with the Detroit Lions, he was satisfied by the fact that he was offered an opportunity and gave it his best effort.

clint's au verses + notes
as a general rule of thumb, @/thefleetfinest regardless of verse or ship, mel's leonard mccoy is clint's sober buddy/sponsor always. assume he is in all of these verses. Or if i have written him in / if he is referenced like an npc assume it's mel's leonard. // mass effect and dragon age may go single ship as well to be determined
star trek // to boldly go // single ship: @/crisispider
Set in the Kelvin timeline
One of five helmsman on the Enterprise, he is typically Sulu's alternate and typically takes the night shift
Post Beyond, he is contemplating a career change from pilot seat to being a security officer thinking his skillset may be better used not glued to monitoring flight controls (actually its the paranoia and trauma)
He doesn't join Starfleet Academy until he is 33, after being an entertainer from the age of 14 to 32 when he got a divorce
He's an odd one, not the most authority friendly
Manages sobriety alongside Leonard Mccoy after an incident with John Walker in the final year of academy before the Nero crisis
Divorced and sad except now he is a committed relationship with engineer Peter and he makes him happy
Friends: Leonard, Uhura, Carol, Peter and Linda. Iowan Alliance with Jim
wastelands // you can run on for a long time sooner or later god'll cut you down
Can follow either the comics or the podcast for plot and canon in terms of events
Drinking again
An absolute disaster and bastard of an old man
Blind from glaucoma
wastelands inspired au // something in the orange tells me we're not done (single ship w/ crisispider)
features my "oc" ashley parker barton, blood related to barney barton, adopted daughter clint barton and peter parker (he is married to peter) as well as peter and mj's daughter mayday
Sadly, he and Leonard are no longer sober
Currently on his revenge quest to kill the T-Bolts and everyone responsible for V-Day
Can be deterred from this suicide revenge quest because well his family is alive
the more fun version of wastelands and more flexible with plot
mass effect // a spectre. smoke and dust and shadow nothing substantial until i chose to be
Canon flexible/divergent setting of the main trilogy // time blind
One of the first few human spectres to come after Commander Shepard (this can happen in the two year gap when shepard is "dead" in me2 // happens post any ending of me3)
Barney and him got off planet of earth when he was only 12 years old, where they both ended up running with a bad crew
That causes a lot of trouble for Clint, but also makes him the best marksmen you could ever pay for
After Barney dies from injuries on a job gone wrong, Clint flips his tune and starts to go after gangs like the gang he ran with (turn vigilante)
There was one specific take down of a splinter pirate crew, that had lead to Clint meeting and working with high ranking Alliance officer Steve Rogers and engineer Tony Stark (not just a phony tony stark; but the Tony Stark of wealth and fame)
The meeting of these two, would later prove beneficial, when Clint would be set up by ex partners-in-crime and would lead up to arrested on the Citadel, awaiting Council judgement
Rogers and Stark had apparently been keeping an eye on Clint, and not only bailed him out with the Council but pitched and vouched; that the Citadel instead turn Clint into one of their operatives. he's got skills that are hard to teach, scary accuracy with any weapon in his hand.
That's how Clint went from orphan to criminal to vigilante to one of the Citadel's few human spectres
Clint has a small crewed ship named the BROKEN ARROW with a varying crew (some details will be static if verse goes singleship)
BROKEN ARROW has two doctors, leonard mccoy (@/thefleetsfinest) and (my) linda carter who specializes in medicinal care for biotics and xenology
Sobriety comes with being a spectre, wanting to be and do better; actually take this seriously as a way to do good in the universe
working an andromeda verse as well
the last of us // had to fight like hell until fight like hell made me one hell of a fighter
Clint's one of the original fireflies; when the group started to rise up in the world
He's always been a resistance guerilla fighter of a guy; doesn't approve of some of the ways that fedra control affected the world
Incredibly resourceful and an invaluable survivalist, almost exclusively uses a bow and arrow
As the fireflies start to lose sight, or as clint finds out about some of their not-so ideal ways of helping people (he is a huge help people guy) he starts to turn away from being a firefly or being the first guy to call them out
dragon age // i will wear the title oathbreaker with pride for no more false demons shall be slain
a born ferelden-er
Has a mabari named lucky
ex templar archer turned mage rights activist
orphaned at age seven with his older brother and became a templar alongside him as the chantry orphanage put pressure upon them that becoming a templar was the maker's intended path
was a mage hunter (and good at it)
quits the order as he finds himself ill with what circles have become, as the chantry does cuts him off from lyrium
turns to alcohol to cope with lyrium addiction and withdrawal
centered around the inquisition timeline, with clint joining up with the inquisition at haven ; favors mage-friendly inquisitors and anti-chantry followers most
can splinter off into two additional verses with one being clint becoming a warden in for da:o / da:a or be a companion for da2
616 // all he ever needed was to trust his own wings
Currently part of Mayor Cage's Thunderbolts
Working on amends with all the Avengers (and hopefully be an Avenger again)
Managing his sobriety well which came about after he was outed as Ronin and events of freefall
He and Kate have reconnected, and he'll usually turn a blind eye for her (sorry Luke and Helen; hawkeye fam always comes first)

oh sicen your a fan of portal too what would a crossover of portal and psychonauts be like?
Well, first off, someone's actually making a full-fledged au for that! psychoportalnauts is the place for it, I believe? But anyways, this isn't their au. This is me infodumping about an au you only vaguely asked about, because I'm nuts.
So, my friend @legallymean and I have actually been tossing around something very much like that for a while now. The thing is, we aren't just limiting it to Portal, since we're insane or something. So, uh-- Toss 'em a couple questions?
Anyways! I'd like to introduce you to Valvonauts. The name is still under works, but let's use that for now.
This is a story loosely following the story of Psychonauts and Psychonauts 2 with Valve characters. This has been seen in the story "Scouting the Camp" on AO3, but other than that? Not much mention of it has been made so far. SO HERE'S A FULL PLOT SYNOPSIS, HAVE FUN!
Psychonauts 1.
Jeremy de Marco, a young boy with 7 older brothers, is living with his mother in the city of Boston. His mother has told them multiple times that "your father left because of a psychic danger" and warned them against associating with danger and with psychics (Not in the same sentence, but they put it together anyways). However, he discovers his own psychic powers, and he tries to train them despite how much his brothers make fun of him for it, especially as he gets into comics and creating his own stories about himself as a Psychonaut. After an incident involving a school rally and a weird pamphlet, he comes home with the thought in his head of going to Whispering Rock. His mother forbids him, but he takes matters into his own hands and runs off in the middle of the night, leaving a note saying that he's going to find his dad.
He makes his way to Whispering Rock, and there he meets the campers F. Pauling (No one knows her first name, and no one uses it anyways) and Marcel Wheatley (aka "Facty") who he quickly befriends. As well, he's introduced to the three psychonauts in charge of the camp: Gordon Freeman, Barney Calhoun, and Helen Pauling (aka "Admin P."). He manages to weasel his way into getting to stay for a while, and Jeremy promptly sets out to become a psychonaut so that he can find his father.
Instead he finds out that there's some sort of weird plan going on with Pauling's mom (aka Admin) and that super weird place across the lake. The events of Psychonauts 1 happen-- Gordon teaches psi-blasts, Barney teaches levitation, brains go missing oh nooo-- and finally, he meets the real mastermind behind the camp: Agent Jane Doe, otherwise known as Admiral Doe, Ranger Doe, Chef Doe, Oarsman Doe-- well, any role that needs filled, there's a fifty-fifty shot of it being one Mr. Jane Doe. He's not shattered or anything, just... Scattered. He keeps asking about a "Tavish" and no one knows who he's talking about. Not like that's important or anything, right? Haha.
Agent Doe asks Jeremy to help with the obvious plot going on, and sends the kid off to the place across the lake to go get those brains back.
.
Across the lake is not Thorney Towers. Across the lake is an old, run-down facility for science, condemned ages ago because the founder went nuts, talking about moon rocks and some sort of pouring people into a computer? We all know that couldn't happen--
But there at the door is a rather imposing figure, glaring at Jeremy as he comes near, and he has to go venture into the mind of the first resident of Aperture Science. This is Aegis, the security guard. (If you don't know AEGIS, he's in Portal Stories: Mel! Totally recommend it.) At the end, he opens the gates, and walks off, revealing he was covering an access code on the wall, scribbled on there. 2056. Strange, but whatever. Jeremy goes inside, and finds two other people there: A woman running in circles with a red bun (Mel) and a man with dark hair who jumps if he even gets close (Doug).
Mel's level is focused on the olympics and sports. Doug's level-- Well, I've already gone into detail there. But Mel gives him an ID card she found ("Caroline Jones"), and Doug tells him about the place's history as well as offering his help with the way up. The elevator takes three things: A code, a keycard, and a fingerprint scan. When it gets all three, Jeremy can go on.
There, he finds GLaDOS. She tells Atlas and P-Body (Sheegor for this purpose) to get out of the way as she's busy, and he yoinks the brains for his two teachers before going to where the others are. With the help of the two others, they get the brains back where they belong, and the group together manages to yeet GLaDOS out of control (for now.) This is when Admin shows up to enact her plan against all the people who she believes have wronged her. Insert the Brain Tank fight. Jeremy accidentally gets de-brained, and he has to throw his brain into the tank to keep going.
Welcome to Wartown.
This version of the Meat Circus is shown as wartorn Boston, with a young girl with Pauling's face guiding him around. They keep going, and eventually they find the source of the issue: The Mann Twins, a glutonous mess that's been twisted out of proportion after years of poor treatment. Jeremy fights it, and gets thrown aside, landing in the mess of sibling tangles (or finding his mom there, either way). More fighting, Several-Headed Brat Monster, Jeremy gets out of there and the day is safe for a bit.
...Note the "For a bit."
They promptly hear that the head of the psychonauts got abducted when they get back. Instead of it being Pauling's dad or something, though, Jane gives a really loud gasp. The head of the psychonauts? It's Zhanna. Pauling, Admin, Barney, Gordon, and Jeremy head out to go rescue her, since Jane's already in a state just thinking about his wife being kidnapped, and their daughter (who also has a buzz cut) just got re-brained, and someone's gotta watch over her.
Rhombus of Ruin.
So, they go get Zhanna back. Only to find out that a) GLaDOS isn't dead, b) GLaDOS was hired by someone to get Zhanna's brain, c) GLaDOS is actually Caroline and got massively messed up by Cave, and d) Pauling's first name is Francis. These are all equally important to Jeremy, who is an idiot and in love with Francis, who still hasn't kissed him because unlike Jeremy she has some standards and wants to wait until things are safe.
Psychonauts 2.
So they go to the Motherlobe. Jeremy is introduced to the interns ("Pyro", Michael Wheatley, Chell, and three others who haven't been decided yet) and the Second Head, Alyx. There's the whole thing with the mental connections and the Lady Luctopus, not much changed there. Then we get to the part that we're all here for.
Zhanna tells Jeremy that he needs to get the old Psychic 6 back together to take out whoever's trying to resurrect the worst enemy they ever had, and especially to help Jane to put together what's going on. So Jeremy goes out to do his best.
First, there's Dell, the engineer for the Psychonauts. Out of everyone, he's the one who's coping the best. He offers Jeremy some devices and calls him son. He's also mentoring Pyro, and they're pretty tight. They don't need to do much for him, just get the brain from the frame to go in the body of poor ol' Mr. Eagleman. He tells Dell that he's planning on finding the rest of the 6, and he just nods and tells him to bring a card so they can all sign it. Clearly a joke, but Jeremy is an idiot.
The second member is the brain in the jar. The level is a lot like Surgeon Simulator/2-point hospital. Trying to find instruments to fix the body on the table only to reveal that the body is [gasp] Dr. Viktor Ludwig, otherwise known as "The Medic". Jeremy gets super excited, only to discover that there is a lot more trauma than he thought. Also, that the member who died all those years ago isn't dead.
The third is the man in the isolation chamber. It isn't that he's isolated to protect others or something, no, he just doesn't trust anyone at all. He doesn't even give out his name, but he does seem to recognize Scout.... (This is Spy, btw, I just haven't actually named him)
Next up, Soldier/Jane. He's the Ford of this au, if you haven't figured that out by now. They go to Teufort Gulch, where everything is falling apart a bit, and continue through the levels.
There's Mick Mundy, holed up in a tower and hostile to anyone who comes nearby. (He and Spy chat after the level, as well. Kind of the same vibes as if Otto and Ford were chatting then)
Then there's Misha, the Heavy. The one most impacted by everything that happened, since he lost his husband. i don't actually know how his level goes but anyways--
The problem is, I'm not entirely sure how Tavish (Demo) fits in overall! We've made comments about him being Lucy because of the whole Nessie thing that he has in TF2, and how he relates with Soldier being a closer bond than most of the team-- However, now that I think about it, if you focus on the family aspect, it could be that Spy's Lucy? (I don't think he'd have the ability to do it, he's not exactly good at taking out groups) And if you focus on the "drowned country" aspect then Sniper and New Zealand (I feel like Sniper is very, VERY clearly Cassie.) Tavish deserves a lot more than I could figure out-- There is, however, a post I made way back when about his mind, so take that. Yes, he totally does make out with his liver in front of Jane and Jeremy.
(I'm still not entirely sure how this part happens, how it works, all of that. The thing is, out of everyone, Demo's probably the only one with sheer destructive power enough to do that (Remember, in Classic, he could literally destroy parts of the level!). Engie can't and wouldn't, Sniper can't, Spy definitely can't, Medic and Heavy can't unless they're together, Soldier maybe could but Demo couldn't shatter him, Scout's a kid, and Pyro's more interested in fire. Unfortunately, that leaves Tavish.)
But the point is that suddenly, partway through fixing stuff, Zhanna shows up! Except she's acting... Very weird. Weird enough that even Viktor knows it's weird, and he's been kind of dead for 20 years. They send in Jeremy and Pauling, and find out that this is actually Mr. Eagleman. Or rather, Grey Mann. He promptly gets decked into next century by a little girl for messing with her honorarily adopted aunt. This is entirely deserved.
I don't feel like they'd have a Maligula-style boss fight here? If anything, it'd just be lots of yelling at Grey and Scout hitting him with a baseball bat until they get Zhanna back in her body.
~
That's all I've got so far, but... I hope i come across right. The whole Demoman part is clunky still, I'll admit, as we more focused our energy on PN1 after deciding "Okay psy 7 is the rest of the TF2 team and medic and heavy are helmut and bob ok move out." I really wanted to go more in depth, since I know it could come off really iffy without explanation.
As well, I would definitely like to let @legallymean be the one to talk about GLaDOS, Heavy, Medic, and the Half-Life crowd-- after all, it's as much their au as it is mine! I might know TF2 characters and Portal, but I don't have a clue about Half-Life.
On the other hand, I do think this au might mean a) Scotland is gone or b) Demo just blew something big up while he was drunk
maybe it got to the point where they all just had to act like it didn't happen and they didn't know each other so he wouldn't get arrested. kind of a funny take to just have it as "Yeah uh. no i just did something dumb and had to go into witness protection, i still know all about it and stuff"
If it is the case than please imagine Grey Mann just trying to find the guy who blew up a large chunk of Loch Ness only to find that he's really just chilling and does not want to deal with this crud right now. also there's a talking sword that likes churros. no one questions it. eyelander is required. he just shows up at teufort gulch with a sword and no one questions anything until he asks who invited him and they realize none of them invited him. Grey really did not think his plan through. He just thought Tavish would want to explode stuff but he's just happy to chill with his buds again.
~
Anyways, I've gone on long enough, and I really do need to rest. I've got yet another final tomorrow, and all I can say is "I hope this makes sense and doesn't come off wrong" because i'm tired and not sure if things sound bad right now.

LUCY & BEDROCK! (TWIST! TWIST!)
Lucille Ball & “The Flintstones”
Tumblr media
“The Flintstones” was TV’s first primetime animated sitcom. It was produced by Hannah-Barbara animation and ran on ABC TV from 1960 to 1966. Following the show's cancellation, a film called The Man Called Flintstone, a musical spy caper that parodied James Bond, was released that same year. The show was revived in the early 1970s and several different series and made-for-TV movies. The original show also was adapted into a live-action film in 1994, and a prequel, The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas, which followed in 2000.
Tumblr media
Although not officially recognized by its creators, the show bears a very strong resemblance to TV’s “The Honeymooners”.  Fred and Wilma Flintstone are reminiscent of Ralph and Alice Kramden, and they have best friends and neighbors Betty and Barney Rubble that are very similar to Ed and Trixie Norton.  The original “Honeymooners” (1955-56) also was spun-off into future iterations, including musical episodes, just like “The Flintstones.”
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball admired “Honeymooners” creator and Jackie Gleason and Gleason even played Ralph Kramden on “Here’s Lucy.”  Ball also worked with the show’s other stars: Art Carney (in “Happy Anniversary and Goodbye” and “What Now Catherine Curtis”), Audrey Meadows (in “Mother of the Bride” on “Life With Lucy”) and even Jane Kean, who played Trixie in the color “Honeymooners” (who was seen on a 1966 episode of “The Lucy Show”).
CAST CONNECTIONS
Tumblr media
Jean Vander Pyl (Wilma Flintstone / Pebbles) worked with Lucille Ball on several episodes of “My Favorite Husband” radio show in 1948.
Tumblr media
Alan Reed (Fred Flintstone) played a train station luncheon counter attendant in “Lucy Visits The White House” (TLS S1;E23) in 1963, while also playing Fred Flintstone on ABC.  He later appeared on an episode of Desi Arnaz’s “Mothers-in-Law”.
Tumblr media
Bea Benadaret (Betty Rubble) was one of Lucille Ball’s favorite performers. She played Iris Atterbury on “My Favorite Husband” and was Ball’s first choice to play Ethel Mertz.  Instead, she played Miss Lewis in “Lucy Plays Cupid” (ILL S1;E15).
Tumblr media
Mel Blanc (Barney Rubble) was a master of voices best known for Bugs Bunny. He also worked extensively with Jack Benny, once with Lucille Ball. He did two films with Lucille Ball: The Fuller Brush Girl (1950) and G.I. Journal (1944).  In 1969, Blanc did some ADR (dialogue replacement) work on “Here’s Lucy.”
Tumblr media
Hal Smith (Various Voices) is probably best known as Otis the Drunk on “The Andy Griffith Show”. He appeared with Lucille Ball in the 1963 film Critic’s Choice and did three episodes of “The Lucy Show” and one of “Here’s Lucy.”
Tumblr media
Howard Morris (Various Voices) played Howard Coe in “Lucy and the Golden Greek” (TLS S4;E2) in 1965.
Tumblr media
Allan Melvin (Various Voices) is best remembered as Sam the Butcher on “The Brady Bunch” and Barney Hefner on “All in the Family.” In 1956, as Corporal Henshaw on “Sergeant Bilko,” he did was seen with Ball in “Bilko’s Ape Man.” Melvin and Ball also appeared together on the 8th Anniversary of “The Ed Sullivan Show” In 1954.
Tumblr media
Harvey Korman (The Great Gazzoo / Various Voices) is best remembered for his work with Carol Burnett on “The Carol Burnett Show”, several times with Lucille Ball. He also appeared on “The Lucy Show” three times.
Tumblr media
Janet Waldo (Mrs. Slaghoople / Hedda Rocker / Various Voices) is best remembered for voicing Judy Jetson on another Hanna-Barbera cartoon series, “The Jetsons” (1962-87). She played Peggy “Keep Jiggling” Dawson on “I Love Lucy” and Lucy Carmichael’s sister Marge on “The Lucy Show.”
Tumblr media
Frank Nelson (Rockbind / Rocky Stone / Various Clerks) did two recurring characters on “I Love Lucy” - Freddie Fiillmore and Ralph Ramsey, in addition to other characters. His distinctive voice was heard on “My Favorite Husband” and he made one appearance, as the harried train conductor, on “The Lucy Show.”
Tumblr media
June Foray (Granny / Nurses) was one of the most famous voice artists in Hollywood, most famous for Rocket J. Squirrel. Coincidentally, Warner Brothers recruited Foray to replace Bea Benadaret as Granny in their cartoons. On “I Love Lucy” she provided the bark of Fred the dog.
Tumblr media
Paula Winslowe (Mrs. Slate / Various Voices) played Mrs. Martha Conklin on “Our Miss Brooks” opposite Gale Gordon. On “I Love Lucy” she was one of the passengers on the S.S. Constitution in “Second Honeymoon” (ILL S5;E14) and a patient (in wheelchair, above) in “Lucy Plays Florence Nightingale” (TLS S2;E14). She was the voice of Bambi’s mother in the 1942 Disney film Bambi.
Tumblr media
Verna Felton (Pearl Slaghoople) received two Emmy nominations for her role in the Desilu series “December Bride,” playing Hilda Crocker from 1955 to 1959. She did two episodes of “I Love Lucy,” including playing Lucy’s stern maid, Mrs. Porter. Felton voiced many characters for Disney.
Tumblr media
Howard McNear (Doctor) played Mr. Crawford, Little Ricky’s music teacher on “I Love Lucy.” McNear went on to play Floyd the Barber on “The Andy Griffith Show” from 1961 to 1967, filmed on the Desilu backlot. He was also seen in Lucy and Desi’s 1953 film The Long, Long Trailer.
Tumblr media
Herb Vigran (Cop) was one of the busiest character actors in Hollywood. He played Jule, Ricky Ricardo’s music agent on two episodes of “I Love Lucy” in addition to playing movie publicist Hal Sparks in “Lucy is Envious” (ILL S3;23). He was seen in the Lucy-Desi film The Long, Long Trailer and six episodes of “The Lucy Show” - all as doctors!
Tumblr media
Ginny Tyler (Daisy) voiced Clementine the sheep in “Lucy Buys a Sheep” (TLS S1;E5) and the bird voices in “Lucy Gets the Bird” (TLS S3;E12) and one episode of “Here’s Lucy.”  She did the voice of the sheep in Disney’s 1964 hit Mary Poppins. Although she died in 2012, her voice can still be heard in the chorus of birds outside The Enchanted Tiki Room at Disneyland and Walt Disney World.
Tumblr media
Willard Waterman (Gus Gravel) was a versatile voice actor who appeared on hundreds of radio shows in the 1930s and 40s. He is probably best remembered for playing “The Great Gildersleeve” on both radio and TV.  He was seen on “The Lucy Show” in “Lucy and The Plumber” (above) and “Lucy the Rain Goddess” (S4;E15).
Tumblr media
Jerry Hausner (Clyde) was best remembered for playing Jerry, Ricky’s agent on “I Love Lucy” (including the pilot). He also did one appearance on “The Lucy Show.”
Tumblr media
Sam Edwards (Agent) played the star-struck bellboy in “Lucy Meets the Queen” (ILL S5;E15). He was also the voice of the adult Thumper in Bambi (1942).
Tumblr media
Sandra Gould (Various Voices) was best remembered as Gladys Kravitz on “Bewitched”.  She made two appearances on “I Love Lucy” and one (above) on “The Lucy Show.”
Tumblr media
Ann-Margret (Ann Margrock) was one of several celebrity guest stars to be honored with character on “The Flintstones”. She was also a guest star (as herself) on “Here’s Lucy” in 1970 and had appeared on Ann-Margret’s 1969 special.
Tumblr media
Elizabeth Taylor (Pearl Slaghoople in The Flintstones live action film, 1994) was one of Hollywood’s most glamorous and popular stars when she guest starred with husband Richard Burton on “Here’s Lucy” in 1970.  It is odd, then, that she was cast as Pearl Slaghoople, a character that was previously considered frumpy.
Tumblr media
Paul Winchell (Umpire / Thief / Reporter in "Wind Up Wilma” - 1981) was best known as a ventriloquist, but he was also an accomplished character actor who appeared in two episodes of “The Lucy Show” and two of “Here’s Lucy.”
Tumblr media
Arte Johnson (”Flintstone Kids” - 1989) was best known as a cast member on “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In”.  He also did an episode of “Here’s Lucy” as an eccentric bird watcher.
Tumblr media
George O’Hanlon (”Flintstone Kids” - 1989) was best remembered as the voice of George Jetson on “The Jetsons,” another hit Hanna-Barbera cartoon. On “I Love Lucy” he was one of two actors to play Charlie Appleby.
"I Love Lucy” and “The Flintstones”
Tumblr media
First, Lucille Ball bears more than a passing physical resemblance to Wilma Flintstone. In “The Flintstones” it is clear that Fred is the leading character and most stories revolve around Fred and Barney, rather than Lucy and Ethel. The tried and true formula of a leading couple and the best friends / neighbors as the secondary characters is used in “I Love Lucy”, “The Honeymooners” and “The Flintstones”.
Here are a few more tangible connections:
Tumblr media
The animated Lucy and Desi that opened pre-syndication airings of “I Love Lucy” were created by the Hanna-Barbera unit at MGM.
Tumblr media
And both shows were sponsored by cigarette companies; “I Love Lucy” by Philip Morris and “The Flintstones” by Winston.
Tumblr media
Wilma and Betty trying to sneak into the Water Buffalo convention in "Ladies Night at the Lodge" (1964) while disguised as men was very close to Lucy and Ethel disguising themselves as male reporters to infiltrate Ricky’s daddy shower in “Ricky Has Labor Pains” (1953).
Tumblr media
The plot of “Operation Switchover” (1964) recycles the premise and many of the same plot elements of “Job Switching” (1952) especially with the domestic disasters on Ricky and Fred's end: scorched clothes while ironing, a fallen cake, and overflowing rice on the stove.
Tumblr media
Like Lucy Ricardo, Wilma Flintstone’s pregnancy was incorporated into the storyline. It was originally thought that like Lucy, Wilma would have a boy, but merchandisers pointed out that there were more opportunities for products for girls, so Pebbles was born. Like Lucille Ball, Jean Vander Pyl (who voiced Wilma) was pregnant at the time of recording and gave birth to her son on the day "The Blessed Event" originally aired on February 22, 1963.
Fred and Barney undertake a rehearsal for the big moment, including Betty rehearsing telephoning the doctor, just like Ricky and the Mertz’s do for Lucy when ‘the time has come’.
Wilma seems to get cravings for unusual foods including hot fudge and sardines that Fred dutifully supplies, just like Ricky did for Lucy.
In the father’s waiting room, a man worries his wife might deliver more than one baby, just like Mr. Stanley (Charles Lane) on “I Love Lucy.”
Tumblr media
In “Operation Switchover” a character named Hedda Rocker from Good Cavekeeping Magazine is obviously inspired by Hedda Hopper, the famous gossip columnist who appeared on two episodes of “I Love Lucy” as herself.
Tumblr media
Arthur Murray, who’s innovate dance instruction method and dance studios became iconic, is parodied on “The Flintstones” as Arthur Quarry.  In a 1965 episode, he was named Arthury Murrayrock.
Tumblr media
In “Lucy Meets the Mustache” (LDCH S3;E3) Lucy wants to open a sealed letter so she tries a inserting a knitting needle under the flap, a method she says she saw in an Alfred Hitchcock movie. The scene is underscored with “Funeral March of a Marionette” by Charles Gounod, which served as the theme tune of “Alfred Hitchcock Presents”. On “The Flintstones” he is parodied as Alvin Brickrock.
Tumblr media
Hollyrock star Rock Quarry is a tribute to Rock Hudson, but talks like Gary Cooper.  Hudson guest-starred on an episode of “I Love Lucy” set in Palm Springs. Previously, Lucy dressed as Gary Cooper (complete with his trademark ‘yup’) to fool near-sighted Caroline Appleby.
Tumblr media
An episode titled “The Soft Touchables” is modeled after Desilu’s hit gangster series “The Untouchables.” “The Lucy Show” parodied their own show in an episode titled “Lucy The Gun Moll” (TLS S4;E25) in 1966 starring “The Untouchables Cast” but using different character names.
Tumblr media
Wilma and Betty’s favorite television show “Peek-A-Boo Camera” catches Fred and Barney acting silly in a 1963 episode that is clearly modeled after TV’s “Candid Camera” created by Allen Funt. In 1971, “Lucy and the Candid Camera” (HL S4;E14) also featured Funt in hidden camera shot plot. Lucy Carmichael also get involved in a hidden camera television show in “Lucy and the Beauty Doctor” (TLS S3;E24).  In that show, the program was called “The Boiling Point.”
Tumblr media
The hit Broadway and movie musical movie My Fair Lady inspired many satires (some in name only) including “My Fair Freddy” (1966) and “My Fair Lucy” (TLS S3;E20) in 1965!
Tumblr media
In “Fred Flintstone Woos Again” (1961) Wilma convinces Fred to renew their wedding vows after realizing the official who originally married them wasn’t fully licensed!  On “I Love Lucy” Lucy realized that their wedding was also invalid when she found an error on their license. They go to the spot they first wed to renew their vows, just like “The Flintstones”.
Tumblr media
In “Dial ‘S’ for Suspicion” (1962) Wilma's devotion to a murder mystery novel causes Fred to wonder if Wilma is trying to away with him. In “Lucy Thinks Ricky Is Trying To Do Away With Her” (ILL S1;E4) Lucy's devotion to a murder mystery novel causes her to wonder if Ricky is trying to do away with her!
Tumblr media
When Wilma can’t keep up with the housework, she hires a maid in “Wilma the Maid” (1963). The same situation happened in the Ricardo home in “Lucy Hires a Maid” (ILL S2;E23). While the Flintstone’s maid is an earthy Italian woman named Rockabrigida, the Ricardo’s maid is a humorless woman named Mrs. Porter. Coincidentally, Mrs. Porter was played by Verna Felton, who voices Pearl Slaghoople on “The Flintstones”.
Tumblr media
When superhero “Superstone” is hired for a birthday party but can’t make it - Fred takes his place. On “I Love Lucy” when Superman is promised for Little Ricky’s party, but can’t make it, Lucy takes his place - nearly!
Tumblr media
In “How To Pick A Fight With Your Wife” (1966) spats between spouses escalate to such a degree that the couples split: Fred and Barney are thrown together as roommates, while Wilma and Betty are bunking together at the other house. In “Vacation from Marriage” (ILL S2;E6) much the same thing occurs between the Ricardos and the Mertzes!
Tumblr media
The real comparison with Lucy and Desi is something Joe Barbera could have only hoped for in 1960 — enduring popularity. Lucy is still justifiably loved by hoards of fans and “I Love Lucy” is on the air somewhere. “The Flintstones” remains a part of the popular culture, 60 years after the show’s debut.

Hey! What are your thoughts on the trailer? It’s great to see Caryl share screen time and story. 10 seasons in and still nobody can rival Norm and Mel for chemistry.
Hi! I loooove the trailer and I feel like we’re getting the good old Caryl back in the sense that it’s finally playful again, Carol roasting Daryl and Daryl living for it. It looks like this season is not going to be 100% dramatic for these two and I like it.
I saw some people being worried about the whole bff stuff but let me tell you that if their shit was truly platonic (and I believe @silversundown2 said it too) Carol would not have answered this way, if your best friend calls you their best friend and your relationship is strictly non-ambiguous you don’t roast them like “bitch, what are you 10?” nope, you just carry on normally. Plus, isn’t the best friend to lovers one the best love story scenario that exists ? Think about all the pairings out there that started this way, Chandler and Monica, Ron and Hermione, Barney and Robin and thousand of others from successful romantic comedies and dramas. That shit always works and the writers know it so they’re going to use it.
I also loved the hug obviously and the “no more fighting, let’s get on the bike and go” dialogue: I hope there is some kind of foreshadowing here as to what might happen in the future. But more than that it’s an indication that they see their lives with each other and each other is all they need.
They don’t behave like this with ANYONE, the playful stuff, the hugs, the smiles, the deep conversations… The only way they could be truly happy is with each other, this has been proven time and time again. Now I’m looking forward to find out if anything Caryl related was said during the sdcc panel and in the other interviews they probably made that day. Not just from Norman and Mel but from AK too.
Have a lovely day :)

Why It Worked: The Flintstones
Tumblr media
Introduction: The Flintstones was an animated sitcom created by animation legends, William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. The show stars Alan Reed, Mel Blanc, Jean Vander Pyl, Bea Benaderet, Don Messick, John Stephenson and Harvey Korman. The show ran on ABC from September 30, 1960 to April 1, 1966 and was the first animated series to hold a prime time slot. Initially receiving mixed reviews, it currently holds an 8.6/10 on TV.com and a 7.5/10 on IMDb, as well as being dubbed one of the greatest cartoons of all time according to TV Guide. It spawned a spin-off starring Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm, 2 live action movies, several animated specials and a couple direct-to-video features. They're also the mascots for Fruity/Coco Pebbles cereal from Post. I remember watching this show on Boomerang growing up and my parents used to watch it all the time when they were kids. As an adult, I've found a great appreciation for this show and just how well constructed it is. So, without further adieu, let's talk about The Flinstones.
Tumblr media
Premise and Execution: The show focuses on the daily lives of a husband and wife and their best friends and neighbors. Very basic set up, but what sets this show apart from other sitcoms is that it's in a caveman setting and it's animated. The caveman aspect allows the creators to come up with not just clever puns, but also creative world building. From dinosaurs being used as machines, rocks and bolders for household items, and animal fur for clothes, the world of the Flintstones takes full advantage of it's caveman setting and leaves no stone unturned. While it's easy to pass the animation off as cheap and choppy, it's important to remember when this was made. Back then, high quality animation only existed in feature films; hence why shows like Crusader Rabbit and Paddy the Pelican had very limited use of animation. Believe it or not, the Flintstones had the best use of animation on television at the time. The crew at Hanna-Barbara made the characters very expressive, the backgrounds were well done, and the designs were more detailed and layered. Sure, we've gotten SO much better animating shows for TV, but for what that had to do at the time, I say they did a very good job.
Tumblr media
Cast and Characters: The voice talent they got for this show couldn't have been better. Alan Reed is very much Fred Flintstone, a cynical hard working caveman who tries his best to be a good husband and father, even if he's in over his head sometimes. Alan gives Fred a very grounded and relatable voice, making him sound like the average American man living in the suburbs who lives a hard life, but never gives up thanks to the love he has for his family. His wife, Wilma, and daughter, Pebbles, are his pride and joy and without them, well, then this show wouldn't be called The Flintstones. Wilma is a sassy, optimistic, loving and caring wife who's not afraid to give Fred a piece of her mind when ever he does something stupid. Pebbles (born towards the end of Season 3) was an adorable baby girl who gives Fred a very valid reason to try and do better. Jean Vander Pyl really sells it as Wilma and Pebbles. Not only does she make a convincing sassy housewife, but she makes the cutest baby noises. Then there's Barney Rubble, played by the Man of 1000 Voices himself, Mel Blanc. Barney is somewhat slow, but he's Fred's best friend and it shows throught the series that he does care for him. It also helps that he's quite funny and knows just how to tickle Fred's buttons without going too far. Blanc of course did a stupendous job voicing the character, not only making him funny, but also providing his iconic laugh. Also, while Blanc was recovering from a car accident he had, Daws Butler filled in for him and you almost couldn't tell the difference. Bea Benaderet was just perfect as Betty, a very cheerful and bubbly housewife who makes for a perfect friend for Wilma. I imagine Benaderet was smiling when recording her lines for Betty, because there's hardly anytime when Betty isn't cheerful. Gerry Johnston took over the role in Season 5 and 6 and just as good a job as Benederet. Bamm-Bamm is very much the opposite of Pebbles in terms of personality. He's still cute, but is super strong and because he's so young, he doesn't know how to control his own strength, unless he's with Pebbles. Don Messick (who would later become the voice of Scooby Doo until his passing in 1997) did an excellent job voicing this little tyke, and his signature catchphrase "Bamm-Bamm!" never gets old.
Tumblr media
Where it Falters: While Harvey Korman did a nice job voicing the Great Gazoo, I have to agree with the popular consensus that his very much out of place in the world of the Flintstones. The character himself isn't annoying or insufferable, but his presence in the show is like putting the Empire State Building in the Shire from Middle Earth. It makes absolutely no sense. Also, the show inadvertently had a negative influence on animated sitcoms going forward. Almost every animated sitcom has an idiotic father, a useless wife, an over reliance on gags, and is so immature it's just sad. Sure, they're popular and have their fans, but the formula that The Flintstones is known for doesn't work for every animated sitcom. Finally, there's that notorious episode where they introduce a Chinese stereotype. I'll go into more detail in a later post, but the character would've worked so much better if he wasn't given an overbite and a thick Chinese accent. As it stands, it's just not funny.
Tumblr media
Conclusion: The Flintstones still holds up as one of the best cartoons of all time. It's got memorable characters, a great voice cast, some clever writing and well made animation (at leadt for the time it was made). At one point, Seth MacFarlane was supposed to reboot the series, but that ultimately fell by the wayside. While it would be cool if we did have a modern Flintstones (in the same vain of What's New Scooby Doo), I'm still happy with the show we got. Thanks so much for reading, and I'll see you next time ;)

Where You Lead: Here Comes The Son Pt. I
Tumblr media
Summary: Henry and Jacinda have dinner with their estranged son.
Based on a prompt by @queen-of-the-merry-men, surrounding Henry and Mat having a falling out that lasts a couple of years. This takes place when Mat is 27, Henry is 49.
Also on AO3
Quiet.
That was still something that Henry was getting used to.
After 22 years of having the triplets under their roof, with the addition of little Wren coming later on, he wondered if he ever would get a moment’s peace. If there’d ever be a time where the girls weren’t arguing over who’s sweater belonged to whom or reprimanding Mat for sneaking in late. There were no more sounds of Barney or the Magic School Bus, the only toys were for their grandchildren when they came by. Family dinners were held at Belle’s, so the only times things ever got loud were when they had the occasional one there.
Still, though, he never regretted stopping at three. He loved his kids, but coming home to his sexy wife and having it just be them was pretty damn nice too.
“Honey, I’m home,” he called out, jokingly.
Jacinda’s laugh boomed from the kitchen, poking around the corner. “Hey babe. How was work?”
“Good. We got everything together on time.”
“Do you ever not?”
“No, but you know me…”
“Wren Gold’s grandson?”
Henry flashed her a sad smile, looking at the entry way wall. It had the last family picture they would ever take, that would actually be complete. His grandfather stood front and center, his hand firmly on his cane. His hair was grey, there were tons of wrinkles, but he also had his namesake and great-great-grandchild on his hip and was smiling. Neal and Henry stood on either side of him, wearing matching suits, fulfilling the eldest Gold man’s lifelong dream. The triplets were in the front, lined up in a row with Melody beside Lucy. Alba and Gideon were also side by side, Emma and Belle not far behind with Gideon’s husband, Roderick and Alba’s wife, Raven with their respective kids. Neal and Emma’s other kids took up the space on the bottom, showing just how much their family had grown over the years and that DNA truly didn’t mean a damn thing.
None of them could’ve imagined that just a few short months later, Wren would be gone. To Henry, he was immortal. Some kind of never aging God that could withstand anything. Sure, he had become a grandfather young and a great-grandfather not much older and that might have had something to do with it, but he just seemed to be there for everything. He saw Henry graduate high school, then college. Then, Wren had done the same for his great-grandchildren, supporting whatever they had wanted to do. Henry knew realistically that he wouldn’t live to see Xiomara’s daughter grow up, but he lived in ignorant bliss.
He made it to 90 years old, before they found out about his heart. There were treatments and no expense was spared, but ultimately, he was gone. Wren’s spirit left the world, leaving his family to mourn the heavy loss.
Henry shook it off, walking closer to his wife. “What’s for dinner? Anyone stopping through?”
“No, it’s just us. I’m making empanadas,” Jacinda said, kissing him once he reached the kitchen. “Lucy called, she and Mel are going to drop Sebastian off here tomorrow. It’s their anniversary.”
“Sounds good to me, they haven’t been out since he was born.”
“Exactly. Xo texted, Wren’s so excited for her first day of school.”
Henry grinned; he couldn’t believe his granddaughter was old enough for school. “That’s great. She’s going to be so smart. She’s a Tremaine-Cassidy-Gold after all.” He started walking to the fridge, opening it to grab a water.
“Also…Mat called.”
He froze, his hand hovering over the water. “Huh?”
“He um…said he has some news.”
“Oh.” Henry’s hand floated from the water over to the beer, grabbing one. “Wonder what it could be.” He cracked open the beer and took a long swig.
Jacinda sighed. “I don’t know, Henry, but he’s reaching out. That’s good, right?”
“Right, right. I’m glad he knows what a phone is.”
She raised an eyebrow. “Henry. Don’t. You are just as much at fault for what’s going on between you two.”
“Me?!? I’m not the one who…” He trailed off when he saw the look on his wife’s face, sighing. “I’m sorry. I don’t want to take this out on you. I know all of this has been hard on you and Mat’s relationship.”
Jacinda took a few steps forward, putting her hands on his hips. “This could be the start of something,” she whispered. “Maybe it’s an olive branch. Maybe you two can finally talk it out.”
“Maybe,” Henry mumbled. He would be lying if he said he didn’t miss his son. God, he missed him. More than anything he wished Wren was still around so he could talk to his grandfather about what he went through those first 10 years of his life when Neal barely spoke to him. “When are we seeing him?”
“He wants to take us out to eat, Hugo’s.”
Henry gave a weird look. “Of course…willing to drop money…”
“Henry!”
“I’m going to be nice! I promise!”
“Good.” Jacinda turned back to her cooking. “Because this is a good thing.”
“A good thing,” Henry echoed, his eyes traveling to the fridge. Like the walls in their house, it was a shrine to their family. There was a picture of him and Mat, on his son’s prom night. He had helped him get ready, just as Neal had with him. They had so much fun, laughing and talking about his plans for the night. They once had such a great relationship. Things had gone wrong so long before “the incident” and he didn’t understand how.
***
Hugo’s was a place that Wren and Belle probably would’ve dragged them to once upon a time. High prices, tiny portions and a dress code. Men wore jackets, women were encouraged to be in skirts. A man played classical piano, the same tune throughout the night. It was the exact scene that one would expect from a Yale graduate. Yet, Henry had spent most of his time in places like Granny’s, in his jeans no less. Now, he was wearing a suit and tie, while Jacinda wore a nice dress, her hair curled.
 “Mom, Dad!”
They turned to find Mat headed their way, a smile on his face that didn’t quite reach the eyes. Henry had noticed that a lot the older his son got. He wore a suit-probably designer-and had his dark hair slicked down. At one point, he had curls that he inherited from both sides of his family, but he hardly let those show. When he leaned in to kiss Jacinda’s cheek, Henry could smell his overpowering cologne.
“Hey baby,” Jacinda said, her voice light and happy. “You look great.”
“Me? Look at you! Smoking, Mom, truly.” He chuckled before turning to smack five with his dad. “Dad.”
Henry couldn’t believe Mat was acting as if nothing had happened, and yet, that seemed exactly like him. “Matias. It’s good to see you.”
“You too. Come sit. I’ve got the best seat in the house.”
“I’d expect nothing less.”
Mat and the hostess lead them over to a table by the window, a tad more private than the hustle and bustle of the busy middle. Henry watched as his son smiled and nodded to some people on the way to the table, clearly colleagues and partners.
Taking after his father and grandfather, Mat had gone to an Ivy League school-though he had opted for Stanford. Getting a scholarship and other aid, he had pulled off a miracle by barely needing to borrow any money from his great-grandfather. While there, he had helped develop an app with some friends. It didn’t go very far, but with that experience, he was able to get a great job at a software development company in Manhattan.
“So, how’s Tiffany?” Henry asked, settling down to look at the menu. He had to do his best to not bulge his eyes at the prices. Wren Gold was his grandfather, but he had been raised on McDonalds and Kraft mac & cheese.
Mat’s brows furrowed. “Broke up years ago, Dad.”
“Oh, sorry to hear that. She was nice.” The truth was, Henry had met her probably twice before Wren died. She was a skinny red head, who wore a diamond necklace to Granny’s and worried about getting mugged in front of Old Man Twickam’s house.
“Right…”
Jacinda cleared her throat, keeping a smile on her face. “So, Matty, how’s business?”
“It’s going great. We’ve been developing a new software for a medical company these past few months, so it’s taken up most of my time,” Mat explained, that not-smile returning. “And you? Xo told me that you expanded the daycare.”
Henry listened to the two of them talk about Jacinda’s new business, but only half-heartedly. Eventually the waitress came over, and Mat took over the ordering. Henry barely recognized the son in front of him. Growing up, Mat had been shy, a bit of a recluse. In fact, he reminded Henry a lot of himself. Lucy and Xiomara were very active, taking stands for what they believed in. Mat ended up making a core group of friends in high school, but this charming, charismatic, flirt had emerged from college.
“Now that we have that out of the way,” Mat said once the waitress walked off. “Let’s get to my news.”
“Yes, your mother said it was quite big.”
Mat nodded. For once, the smile slipped and he looked a bit serious. “I know I haven’t exactly been the world’s best uncle.”
“You were in college when Wren was born,” Jacinda assured him. “And Sebastian just came along. There’s time.”
“Well, I want to do more, be there.”
Henry tilted his head. “Are you moving back to Stars Hollow?”
“Oh no. However, I have been talking to Nana Belle a lot lately. She’s doing well, but with the twins out of the house, married and all, Pop-Pop’s place is just getting to be too big for her.”
Henry and Jacinda nodded. Belle had mentioned that at one of the last family dinners. She had been looking into purchasing their vacation home on the Cape full time, but wasn’t sure what to do with the house. It had been Wren’s first step away from Malcolm. Emma and Neal didn’t need it much either, even the kids they had adopted were grown and they only took in emergency placements, focusing on the inn now that Granny had passed. The rest of the family either had no use for it or couldn’t afford it.
“She wants to keep the house in the family, so she’s offered to sell it to me.”
Jacinda’s grin only widened. “Well, I think that’s great.”
Henry frowned. “But what about your job?”
“I can commute to the city. It’s only an hour, by car or train.”
“It’s far too big for you by yourself.”
“Well, hopefully one day I’ll be able to fill it with kids like Pop-Pop and Nana Belle did.”
Henry didn’t say anything further, he just sipped on his water. He could feel the anger inside of him building. Deep down, he knew that he should be happy that the house was staying in the family, but of all the people for it to go to…
He didn’t say much else as the night went on. Instead, Henry focused on his tiny portions, disgusting wine and half-listened to Jacinda’s questions about the move, him selling his loft on the Upper East Side and more. As he sat there, he realized that he had so much anger to his son, a boy that once lit up his heart and made him smile like no one else could. Now, he was just so disappointed and no matter how hard he tried…he just couldn’t shake it.
Eventually, the dinner came to an end. Henry was irritated, tired, buzzed and still hungry. Mat paid the check and kissed his mom’s cheek, before patting his dad on the back. He said he’d be in touch, but in the meantime, he had to get back into the city due to an “early morning”. Jacinda handed Henry the valet tag, asking him to grab the car while she went to the bathroom.
Henry made his way outside, handing the tag to the employee. As he stood there waiting, he noticed Mat was there as well, fiddling with a cigarette.
“They always take forever,” he mumbled when he saw his father. “Great food, shit valet.”
“Surprise you grace them with your presence,” Henry muttered.
Mat chuckled, taking a drag. “Ya know, most fathers would be glad that their sons would be moving closer, but you?” He shook his head. “Only you would be upset.”
“I’m not upset, Mat.”
“Yes, you are.”
“I’m not.” He turned to his son. “I just don’t get why you’re interested in the house of the man that you couldn’t bother to come to the funeral for.”
Mat’s lips drew a firm line. “I thought we could get past this.”
“How?” Henry felt his body trembling. “Do you know what Grandpa meant to me? He put me through school, both prep and college. Without him, I probably wouldn’t have met your mother, you kids wouldn’t even be here.”
“I’ve heard the stories, Dad.”
Henry continued as if he hadn’t heard him. “I went to him for advice for so much. He was there for me, but most importantly, for all of you kids. He and Belle took you and your sisters on vacations, sleepovers, all of that. He loved you so damn much…and what do you do? You skip his funeral to attend a business trip in Tokyo.”
Mat bit his lip. “Dad…”
“But hey, don’t worry. At least we got fucking flowers, huh?”
Mat exhaled, letting out some of the smoke he had just let in. He stared forward for a few minutes, the only sounds being the ambient noises of the restaurant behind them and the cicadas chirping in the warm, Connecticut summer air.
“We’re doing this, huh?” Mat asked, and Henry realized he was talking to himself. “I guess we are.” He dropped the cigarette and fully faced his dad. “I talked to Pop-Pop ever day leading up to his death, ever since he got sick. I called him every single day, if I couldn’t see him in person that was.”
Henry folded his arms over his chest. “Okay?”
“You said he paid for your school, but you know he paid for mine too right? What I couldn’t. He also was the one person I could go to, for anything. He was my outlet, for my entire life.”
Henry felt his face fall and his muscles loosen. “What…what are you talking about?”
“Dad…did you ever stop to consider that I never told you what I wanted to be when I grow up?”
He paused for a moment. “When you were 5…you said you wanted to be a fireman.”
“I mean, seriously. As a teenager, you could tell that Xiomara wanted to be a lawyer, and that Lucy wanted to go into photography. But did you even know that I was interested in tech?”
“You never told me.”
“Did you ever ask?”
Henry fumbled over himself. “Well…I…” He trailed off. “We talked, about a lot of stuff.”
“I’m not denying that we did. You’d ask how my day was, but beyond “Good”, how much did you really hear?”
Henry’s mouth dropped open. No, this wasn’t true. He knew his kids; he knew all of them. They all had a great relationship with one another, or at least they had before his son became a total snob obsessed with himself.
“This is ridiculous. We had a good relationship, Mat. Up until you went to college, we were close. Then you got on this high horse and it was hard to get you down.”
Mat scoffed. “Right, of course that’s how you see it.”
A black Cadillac, resembling his grandfather’s way too much, pulled up and the valet stepped out. Mat handed the guy some cash and walked over to the door, looking up at his dad.
“It was good seeing you, Dad. Say hi to Xiomara and Lucy for me.”
He got into the car and drove away. Henry stood in the dust, feeling a mix of anger, confusion and mostly hurt.

Hey, it's the useless lesbian again ^^' Since you said, I could write whatever I want, I have some questions for you, if you would be interested in answering them ^-^ • How did you get into shipping? • Do you ship other characters (Games, movies, TV series)? ^Do you have any other blogs about them? • Did you ship Mercy with someone else, before Moira was announced? Mit fründliche Grüess, Chuchichästli ❤
Oooh yes! I love questions, especially questions about ships!First Question: I want to say that I got into shipping… when I use to be into Warrior Cats. First ship was Ravenpaw and Barley, not sure why but just happened to like them together.  Of course I didn’t really start using the word “ship” until I got into anime.
Second Question: I have sooooo many ships oof.  I think I made a post a while ago with all my overwatch ships (and even then it’s bigger then that list), but I can give you some from other games and shows. I’ll start with shows because that will be the shortest.
Shows
She-Ra (Netflix): Catra and Adora, Adora and Glimmer, I’m also digging Scorpia and Entrapta
Carmen Sandiego (Netflix): Carmen and Julia (the show is still pretty new so finding ships was a little rough, but I still love it so much)
Steven Universe: Blue and Yellow Diamond, Peridot and Lapis, Amethyst and pearl, amethyst and peridot, Garnet, the fused off-colors, Sadie and Lars
Games (Get ready this is a big one)
Portal: Cave Caroline and Greg (this was an AU i had with an ex, still loved the AU),Cave and Caroline, Fact Core and Adventure Core, Chell and Wheatley, Mel and Virgil, Virgil and Rainbow Core, Mel Virgil and Rainbow Core.
Half-Life: Barney and Dr. Kleiner, Gordon Freeman and G-Man, Eli and Dr. Kleiner
Portal and Half-Life Universe: Alyx Vance and Chell, Alyx Chell and Wheatley
L4D: Zoey and Ellis
Bioshock (Includes Infinite and DLCs *besides overwatch this is the biggest one due to a lot of AUs and accidental ships*): Fontaine and Tenenbaum, Tenenbaum and Rosalind, Julie and Tenenbaum, Julie and Reggie, Ryan and Cohen, Ryan and Jolene, Booker and Hector (one of cohens disciples), Cobb and Martin, Cohen and Fitzpatrick, Fitzpatrick and Cobb, Culpepper and Jolene, Culpepper and Sullivan, Bill McDonagh and Elaine, Bill and Ryan, Gil Alexander and Sinclair, Sinclair and Johnny Topside, Elizabeth and Eleanor. {Any ship with Jack is pedophilia because he is literally 3 years old I’m sorry}
Overwatch (ok lets get this one done): Mercy and Moira, Mercy and Widowmaker, Mercy and Pharah, Mercy and Reaper (Occasionally thanks to fanart), Reaper and Solider 76, Reaper and Doomfist, Doomfist and Lucio, Lucio and Baptiste, Lucio and D.va, D.va and Brig, D.va and Sombra, Sombra and Symm, Sombra and Widowmaker, Sombra and Zarya, Zayra and Mei, Zayra and Lynx Seventeen, Lynx Seventeen and Maximilian, McCree and Hanzo, McCree and Genji, Genji and Zenyatta, Brig and Pharah, Pharah and Symm, Roadhog and Junkrat, Tracer and Widowmaker, Tracer and Emily, Ana and Reinhardt
FNAF: Jeremy and Phone Guy
AU Crossovers: Stanley (Stanley Parable) and Mike (FNAF), Chris (mention character in Stanley Parable) and Fritz Smith (FNAF2)
Yeah I use to run a lot of ask blogs with someone, and they had a lot of these ships, but this blog is the first one that is mainly heavy on just the ship and characters.
Third Question: Yes! I did! I will be completely honest, Pharmercy was the real reason I even bought overwatch to begin with.  I just saw so much fanart and was curious about the game.  Then as I started playing and figuring out each character I gained more ships.  I eventually died down my love for pharmercy (I still love it) and grew to love MercyMaker since my friend picked up Widow and I decided during the uprising event I was just going to pocket him.  Honestly its mainly because of my love for Widow, but when I started reading fics and looking at fanart I did love the ship…. untillll Moira was announced and said to have history with Mercy….. I ended up kinda sort of shipping MercyKill thanks to like fanart because I mean honestly that stuff is beautiful… I still really love the other ships, but Moicy is my favorite for Mercy.

Corey and Oats in…
Show’s Over, Barney.
NOTE: This is what I call the real ending of Barney’s Ranger Show, and this is what I think it should have had as the ending. A word of warning, this contains anti-Barney humor and lots of violent fight scenes.
-------------------------------------------------
Corey and Oats went on a slew of adventures together and they even fought a slew of villains, one afternoon the duo were in the bedroom at Nile Road when they got a message about a disturbance in the supernatural world regarding a grim-dark-esque episode called ‘Barney’s Ranger Show’, using some magic items they transported themselves into the fic and looked around inside it. ‘Eeeew, this episode obviously reeks of creepy overly cutesy baby stuff and it makes me uncomfortable’..Oats moaned as they walked through what appeared to be a tv studio. ‘THIS is the episode that is better than Day of the Barney? I am sorry but i'd rather read that fic than be in this one, this one is just one of those creepy momma and baby fetish fics only it's Barney brainwashing the Power Rangers..I hate this place already.’
Corey shrugged as he looked around seeing the brainwashed children with glazed over eyes and creepy living dinosaur plushes that tried to grab at him and hug him, which disgusted him. ‘Yes, brainwashing scares me.’ That’s when the hideous purple dinosaur loomed up in front of him. ‘Aaaaaaw...what's wrong? Does the little pony and his friend the widdle microbe need a hug?’
“Widdle pony? How old do you think I am, five?”
“Yeah, you can’t talk to us like we’re babies, you know.”
Oats felt insulted by what Barney had called him and charged towards him, unleashing his equine fury. ‘No, no back away you disgusting creep. You are a monster, you know that, right? You brainwash people into being your friends and cast-mates and yet some people think this is cute? Well I don't. I apologize for saying a non PG word if I call you the s word for fecal matter, this isn’t cute..this is a diaper fetishist’s wet dream.’ ‘Well it sounds like the widdle pony is grumpy.’ ‘Sorry, i'm not grumpy, I am just peeved off that you freaking brainwash people like this, especially what you did to the Power Rangers.’ ‘Darn right, i'm sorry Barney but the people who like this stuff must be delusional and you must be delusional yourself to think you will get away with this.’
“What am I doing is good, don’t you wanna join in?”
“Hey, you…purple pukeball. Leave my bestie alone.”
Corey charged towards Barney..scolding him and hitting him. ‘It’s this kind of thing that makes us hate you even more, the fact you’ve not only brainwashed our favorite superheroes but all of the people in the audience, into being your family, on live tv too, that makes me madder than ever.’
The covid microbe’s eyes glowed red as he lunged at Barney, but before he could saw Kimberly Hart, only it wasn’t Kimberly Hart, it was a corrupted version of her, Kimberly had brainwashed and turned into a gross living plushie pterodactyl monster with the mind of a toddler and the speech impediment that went with it. ‘Silly Corey, Daddy Barney doesn't mean to hurt all those people, he just wants to pway with them all and like he did with us.’ Which was followed by a brainwashed Billy Cranston who was a grotesque living triceratops plushie. ‘Yeeeah...don't wou wanna be a dino-bwaby too?’ ‘Eeeew, no. You’re teenagers for crying out loud, you’re too old to be in diaper fetish scenarios, i’m not saying it is wrong or that you shouldn’t, but come on, can’t you see that Barney made this happen to you because they’re trying to rob you of your identity?’
“I’ve always been Barney's widdle baby girl.”
Mel sighed as she walked over to Kimberly. ‘WHY Kimberly, why? Why is it always you? First Agony in Pink and now this? You're my heroine and why are you stooping to this low? I'm sorry but this isn't you, the person behind this, has a creepy fetish for diapering people and unleashing monsters who brainwash people into wearing suits and being forced to be someone's baby, that's not nice. This isn't you, this is the author basically torturing you and forcing identity death upon you.’ ‘Little miss grumpy koala needs a huggy wuggy.’ ‘ And little miss brainwashed ranger needs a clue.’ Mel pulled out a spell book and cast a spell, pointing in Kimberly’s direction. ‘Don't make me use this on you, i've got magic and i'm not afraid to use it.’
The spell hit several brainwashed cast-members and turning them back to normal. ‘Huh? Where am I?’ one of them asked. ‘You’re in this studio, you and the other cast and crew were brainwashed by Barney into being part of this sick, twisted evil show, this purple dinosaur brainwashed you and your friends into being mindless cast-mates of his with the minds of infants and he forced you to speak in baby talk and forced you to act like you were never human. You were human, and still are, you were just turned into a baby dinosaur plushie-freak to be one of his cast-mates.’
It was then that the purple dinosaur’s mood shifted from happy go lucky to a more worried tone, it was then he had realized that his plan was about to be foiled. ‘Uh oh, something's not so super de duper around here.’ ‘You're damn right something isn't super de-duper and it is you, you are brainwashing everyone into being your mindless plushie dino cast-members, and what you are doing is wrong, you force identity death upon them, mentally regress them and make them act like they were never human to begin with. ‘
“But my children like it, right?”
“The Power Rangers are NOT your kids, you just brainwashed them into acting like that. That isn’t nice, a real dad would NEVER force his kids to love him like that, you monster.”
Oats galloped over to Kimberly and hugged her. ‘Kimberly try to remember who you used to be, you are not one of Barney's children, you are not a baby or a dinosaur, you don't even use baby talk since only babies talk like that, you are a teenager, from Angel Grove, you are a heroine to all, you are a Power Ranger.’ He cast a spell on Kimberly which recovered her memories and her mind.
‘Oh my...my head hurts, thanks Oats.’ ‘No problem, i’m just being a true friend and helping out. Helping is what real friends do, unlike Barney here.’ Mel cast a spell on the other rangers, turning them back to normal.
“There you go, all better.”
“That sure was a nightmare experience.”
‘Go and do what you do best, guys.’ ‘Thanks! It’s morphing time!’, the rangers morphed as they broke free of their mind control and fought off the grotesque living dino plushies, some sentient sleeper suits tried to reattach themselves to them but Corey fought them off.
Barney realized that his power over his cast members and his crew and the audience was weakening and that’s when he attempted to go after the duo…’Sorry but...this is for the people you corrupted, this is for the irritating baby talk..’ Corey exclaimed as he shot energy blasts out of his fingers and some speaks, two of them landed in the direction of BJ and Baby Bop, the spikes infected the two as they collapsed on the ground.
The two dinosaurs convulsed on the floor as they lost all their energy and shattered into pieces, their shards dissolved into the ground in the process. ‘Children, avenge your father please.’ Barney tried to command, trying to recondition the cast-members into serving him again.
‘Oh...papa Barney, how about this?’ Mel snarled as she picked up one of the props from the stage and threw it at him, her eyes glowing a piercing dark green color. Barney gulped as he saw Mel’s body bulk up with muscle as her fur turned from grey to greenish, her breast size growing bigger as her top ripped apart in a few spots and her shoes burst open to let her feet grow even larger as her hair turned dark green.
“Perhaps I shouldn’t have done this.”
‘Purple dino annoys Mel, Mel no like Barney...Mel SMASH Barney, of course I don't really talk like the Hulk, it's just I want to smash you.’ Mel growled as her voice deepened but also became a bit more sultry, she snarled at him as she picked up several props and furniture items and threw them at him. Oats joined in as he pointed out…’The kind of love you try to teach people here isn't what real love is, it's not wholesome, it's creepy, it's wrong, it's sad, it's forced love. Forced love is NOT nice, it's gross, this is love that is brought on by brainwashing.’
“I thought everyone loved me.”
‘No, everyone I know loathes you and hates you, you're one of the worst children's characters ever and this isn't making things any better.’ She cast a spell which she used to decipher one of his songs, playing it backwards and unleashing the hidden message. ‘This song when played backwards is actually brainwashing your fans into thinking they are your kids, when they're not your kids at all, this message is evil and so are you.’
“Evil? But i'm good.”
The koala-girl mockingly smirked as she walked over to him, ready to give him a taste of his own medicine. ‘There's nothing good about what you did. Hmm..I wonder if purple dinosaurs that can sing have a functioning set of internal organs.’ She quipped to herself as she cast a spell on him which sent him flying backwards before performing an energy blast on him and reaching for his chest and removing his heart as she mocked him with a twisted version of his own signature song. ‘I hate you, yes...I do, look I ripped out your heart Barney, you will pay for your crimes and pay for what you did, you sir are soon to be extinct’.
She finished him off with an energy blast performing a number of attacks to weaken his health, eventually he felt himself getting weaker as he lost all his power, as he collapsed on the floor due to being weakened just in time for Mel to crush him. ‘Now let's see who this dinosaur really is.’ Oats used a spell to remove Barney’s head, revealing ‘Barney’ to actually be Puro from Changed. ‘Puro!’ ‘Wait a minute...this is that trope where someone takes off a mask to reveal they were someone else in disguise the whole time.’
Corey tugged at Puro’s face, removing it and revealing Ciel, a known villain who was one of Mel’s biggest enemies underneath. ‘Ah ha, I knew it, it was Ciel.’ ‘I knew it, but how?’. ‘It was all part of my plan to brainwash kids into serving me.’ Ciel explained.
‘So that's why you did this to the Power Rangers, because you wanted to ruin a childhood favorite of so many 90's kids with the help of this episode’s author, and you made a Barney suit that would tf you into Barney himself and you used a mind control spell to hypnotize people into being your obedient dino-slaves/children.’ ‘And I would have gotten away with it if it wasn’t for that meddling microbe and the talking horse.’
‘Serves you right, I knew it was you behind the Barney thing the whole time...you and the creator of this episode wanted to make something that you think would be better than Day of the Barney but you made it worse.’ Oats added, trotting over to Ciel. ‘Exactly.’ ‘Ciel, Ciel, Ciel, no matter how you try to corrupt something innocent, you will never win, because evil will NEVER win no matter what.’ ‘That’s right.’
A TV producer ran up to Mel…’Thank you so much Mel, for stopping the evil Barney and his dinosaur slaves from corrupting the entire town's children.’ ‘It's no trouble at all mr producer sir, Barney wasn't really who he was at all but Ciel disguised as him via a special suit, this suit enabled her to tf into the purple dinosaur and used a hypnosis spell to try and brainwash all the kids.’ Mel explained. ‘Well then, that explains it all. I don’t know what I was thinking when I let him do the show like that.’
“That’s easy, you were brainwashed.”
‘Take her away, boys.’ Ciel was taken away by some Supernatural Police Force agents and put on trial, where she was found guilty and was sentenced to be stuck in the form of a form that fit the kind of punishments she put on people, she was turned into a raven-like maid to reflect all the maid transformations she forced on her victims and she was made to clean up the SPF’s office. ‘Yaaaaay, we did it.’
Mel addressed the audience with a message…’Remember kids, if a purple dinosaur asks you if he can brainwash you into thinking you belong to him and to force you to be a plushie dino, just say no. Parents, there are much better kids shows to subject your kids to than Barney, and these shows are good and actually are fun. Show them Lazytown, Sesame Street, or even Spongebob, show them Fireman Sam or the Koala Brothers, show them Postman Pat, show them Arthur, show them anything but Barney or Caillou.’
“Well said.”
“Our job here is done.”
“Yaaay! Let’s go home.”
Mel used a spell to teleport herself and Corey and Oats back home, but not before doing a spell that erased everything from ‘Barney’s Ranger Show’ from both Deviantart-verse history and the Monster World’s history in general. ‘It’s always a shame when a creator/monster maker uses their talents to corrupt your favorite characters, such wonderful gifts yet they use them for evil.’
When they arrived at Nile Road, they settled down and relaxed as they listened to music and played together. For the rest of the afternoon, they all played together and had fun. Throughout the evening they had a nice time, and once dinner time came around they all had dinner together, after dinner they relaxed for a bit as they played Webkinz.
And when it was time for bed they all put on their night-clothes and snuggled up, as Mel told them about how proud she was of them. They drifted off and had sweet dreams of having their own tv show.
Another adventure has come to a close but don’t worry…stay tuned for ‘Ghost of Thena Rae’ ‘The Smallest Koala’ ‘Corey and Oats’s Galactic Journey’ ‘Visit to the Horror Museum’ ‘Cinnamon: Princess of the Flowery Forests’ ‘The Yugely Fun Trumpy Adventure.’ and coming next month…’Return to Weta Workshop.’

Harry Shearer Interview With Jon Hammond
#WATCHMOVIE HERE: Harry Shearer Interview With Jon Hammond Jon's archive https://archive.org/details/HarryShearerInterviewWithJonHammond Youtube https://youtu.be/MByRDtzWZB4 Vimeo https://vimeo.com/231223997 Nashville Tennessee -- Harry Shearer Interview with Jon Hammond just before Harry accepted the American Eagle Award along with Crystal Gayle and Patti Smith from the US National Music Council during Summer NAMM Show - for broadcast on Jon Hammond Show on MNN TV Channel 1 in Manhattan - Harry's Wiki https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Shearer "Harry Julius Shearer (born December 23, 1943) is an American actor, voice actor, comedian, writer, musician, author, radio host, director and producer. He is known for his long-running roles on The Simpsons, his work on Saturday Night Live, the comedy band Spinal Tap and his radio program Le Show. Born in Los Angeles, California, Shearer began his career as a child actor. From 1969 to 1976, Shearer was a member of The Credibility Gap, a radio comedy group. Following the breakup of the group, Shearer co-wrote the film Real Life with Albert Brooks and started writing for Martin Mull's television series Fernwood 2 Night. He was a cast member on Saturday Night Live on two occasions, between 1979–80, and 1984–85. Shearer co-created, co-wrote and co-starred in the 1984 film This Is Spinal Tap, a satirical rockumentary, which became a cult hit. In 1989, Shearer joined the cast of The Simpsons; he provides voices for numerous characters, including Mr. Burns, Waylon Smithers, Principal Skinner, Ned Flanders, Reverend Lovejoy, Kent Brockman, Dr. Hibbert and more. Shearer has appeared in several films, including A Mighty Wind and The Truman Show, has directed two, Teddy Bears' Picnic and The Big Uneasy, and has written three books. Since 1983, Shearer has been the host of the public radio comedy/music program Le Show, a hodgepodge of satirical news commentary, music, and sketch comedy. Shearer has won a Primetime Emmy Award, has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the radio category, and has received several other Emmy and Grammy Award nominations. He has been married to singer-songwriter Judith Owen since 1993. He is currently "artist in residence" at Loyola University, New Orleans. Shearer was born December 23, 1943 in Los Angeles, the son of Dora Warren (née Kohn) (d. 2008), a bookkeeper, and Mack Shearer.[2] His parents were Jewish immigrants from Austria and Poland.[3][4] Starting when Shearer was four years old, he had a piano teacher whose daughter worked as a child actress. The piano teacher later decided to make a career change and become a children's agent, as she knew people in the business through her daughter's work. The teacher asked Shearer's parents for permission to take him to an audition. Several months later, she called Shearer's parents and told them that she had gotten Shearer an audition for the radio show The Jack Benny Program. Shearer received the role when he was seven years old.[5] He described Jack Benny as "very warm and approachable [...] He was a guy who dug the idea of other people on the show getting laughs, which sort of spoiled me for other people in comedy."[6] Shearer said in an interview that one person who "took him under his wing" and was one of his best friends during his early days in show business was voice actor Mel Blanc, who voiced many animated characters, including Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and Barney Rubble.[7] Shearer made his film debut in the 1953 film Abbott and Costello Go to Mars, in which he only had a small part. Later that year, he made his first big film performance in The Robe.[6] Throughout his childhood and teenage years he worked in television, film, and radio.[6] In 1957, Shearer played the precursor to the Eddie Haskell character in the pilot episode of the television series Leave It to Beaver. After the filming, Shearer's parents said they did not want him to be a regular in a series. Instead they wanted him to just do occasional work so that he could have a normal childhood. Shearer and his parents made the decision not to accept the role in the series if it was picked up by a television network.[6] Shearer attended UCLA as a political science major in the early 1960s and decided to quit show business to become a "serious person".[5] However, he says this lasted approximately a month, and he joined the staff of the Daily Bruin, UCLA's school newspaper, during his first year.[5] and as editor of the college humor magazine (Satyr) including the June 1964 parody, Preyboy [8] He also worked as a newscaster at KRLA, a top 40 radio station in Pasadena, during this period. According to Shearer, after graduating, he had "a very serious agenda going on, and it was 'Stay Out of the Draft'."[5] He attended graduate school at Harvard University for one year and worked at the state legislature in Sacramento. In 1967 and 1968, he was a high school teacher, teaching English and social studies. He left teaching following "disagreements with the administration."[5] From 1969 to 1976, Shearer was a member of The Credibility Gap, a radio comedy group that included David Lander, Richard Beebe and Michael McKean.[9] The group consisted of "a bunch of newsmen" at KRLA 1110, "the number two station" in Los Angeles.[6] They wanted to do more than just straight news, so they hired comedians who were talented vocalists. Shearer heard about it from a friend so he brought over a tape to the station and nervously gave it to the receptionist. By the time he got home, there was a message on his answering machine asking, "Can you come to work tomorrow?"[6] The group's radio show was canceled in 1970 by KRLA and in 1971 by KPPC-FM, so they started performing in various clubs and concert venues.[5] While at KRLA, Shearer also interviewed Creedence Clearwater Revival for the Pop Chronicles music documentary.[10] In 1973, Shearer appeared as Jim Houseafire on How Time Flys, an album by The Firesign Theatre's David Ossman. The Credibility Gap broke up 1976 when Lander and McKean left to perform in the sitcom Laverne & Shirley.[5] Shearer started working with Albert Brooks, producing one of Brooks' albums and co-writing the film Real Life. Shearer also started writing for Martin Mull's television series Fernwood 2 Night.[5] In the mid-1970s, he started working with Rob Reiner on a pilot for ABC. The show, which starred Christopher Guest, Tom Leopold and McKean, was not picked up.[5] Career[edit] Saturday Night Live[edit] In August 1979, Shearer was hired as a writer and cast member on Saturday Night Live, one of the first additions to the cast,[6] and an unofficial replacement for John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, who were both leaving the show.[11] Al Franken recommended Shearer to Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels.[12] Shearer describes his experience on the show as a "living hell" and "not a real pleasant place to work."[11] He did not get along well with the other writers and cast members and states that he was not included with the cast in the opening montage (although he was added to the montage for latter episodes of the 1979-80 season) and that Lorne Michaels had told the rest of the cast that he was just a writer.[13] Michaels left Saturday Night Live at the end of the fifth season, taking the entire cast with him.[14] Shearer told new executive producer Jean Doumanian that he was "not a fan of Lorne's" and offered to stay with the show if he was given the chance to overhaul the program and bring in experienced comedians, like Christopher Guest. However, Doumanian turned him down, so he decided to leave with the rest of the cast.[15] When I left, Dick [Ebersol] issued a press release, saying "creative differences." And the first person who called me for a comment on it read me that and I blurted out, "Yeah, I was creative and they were different." —Harry Shearer[16] In 1984, while promoting the film This Is Spinal Tap, Shearer, Christopher Guest and Michael McKean had a performance on Saturday Night Live. All three members were offered the chance to join to the show in the 1984–1985 season. Shearer accepted because he was treated well by the producers and he thought the backstage environment had improved[11] but later stated that he "didn't realize that guests are treated better than the regulars."[17] Guest also accepted the offer while McKean rejected it, although he would join the cast in 1994. Dick Ebersol, who replaced Lorne Michaels as the show's producer, said that Shearer was "a gifted performer but a pain in the butt. He's just so demanding on the preciseness of things and he's very, very hard on the working people. He's just a nightmare-to-deal-with person."[18] In January 1985, Shearer left the show for good,[11] partially because he felt he was not being used enough.[16] Martin Short said Shearer "wanted to be creative and Dick [Ebersol] wanted something else. [...] I think he felt his voice wasn't getting represented on the show. When he wouldn't get that chance, it made him very upset."[19] Spinal Tap[edit] Shearer co-created, co-wrote and co-starred in Rob Reiner's 1984 film This Is Spinal Tap.[6] Shearer, Reiner, Michael McKean and Christopher Guest received a deal to write a first draft of a screenplay for a company called Marble Arch. They decided that the film could not be written and instead filmed a 20-minute demo of what they wanted to do.[11] It was eventually greenlighted by Norman Lear and Jerry Perenchio at Embassy Pictures.[11] The film satirizes the wild personal behavior and musical pretensions of hard rock and heavy metal bands, as well as the hagiographic tendencies of rockumentaries of the time. The three core members of the band Spinal Tap—David St. Hubbins, Derek Smalls and Nigel Tufnel—were portrayed by McKean, Shearer and Guest respectively. The three actors play their musical instruments and speak with mock English accents throughout the film. There was no script, although there was a written breakdown of most of the scenes, and many of the lines were ad-libbed.[11] It was filmed in 25 days.[11] Shearer said in an interview that "The animating impulse was to do rock 'n' roll right. The four of us had been around rock 'n' roll and we were just amazed by how relentlessly the movies got it wrong. Because we were funny people it was going to be a funny film, but we wanted to get it right."[2] When they tried to sell it to various Hollywood studios, they were told that the film would not work. The group kept saying, "No, this is a story that's pretty familiar to people. We're not introducing them to anything they don't really know," so Shearer thought it would at least have some resonance with the public.[6] The film was only a modest success upon its initial release but found greater success, and a cult following, after its video release. In 2000, the film was ranked 29th on the American Film Institute's list of the top 100 comedy movies in American cinema[20] and it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".[21] Shearer, Guest and McKean have since worked on several projects as their Spinal Tap characters. They released three albums: This Is Spinal Tap (1984), Break Like the Wind (1992) and Back From The Dead (2009).[22] In 1992, Spinal Tap appeared in an episode of The Simpsons called "The Otto Show".[23] The band has played several concerts, including at Live Earth in London on July 7, 2007. In anticipation of the show, Rob Reiner directed a short film entitled Spinal Tap.[24] In 2009, the band released Back from the Dead to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the release of the film.[25] The album features re-recorded versions of songs featured in This Is Spinal Tap and its soundtrack, and five new songs.[26][27] The band performed a one date "world tour" at London's Wembley Arena on June 30, 2009. The Folksmen, a mock band featured in the film A Mighty Wind that is also made up of characters played by Shearer, McKean and Guest – was the opening act for the show.[28] The Simpsons[edit] Shearer is also known for his prolific work as a voice actor on The Simpsons. Matt Groening, the creator of the show, was a fan of Shearer's work, while Shearer was a fan of a column Groening used to write.[29] Shearer was asked if he wanted to be in the series, but he was initially reluctant because he thought the recording sessions would be too much trouble.[29] He felt voice acting was "not a lot of fun" because traditionally, voice actors record their parts separately.[7] He was told that the actors would record their lines together[7] and after three calls, executive producer James L. Brooks managed to convince Shearer to join the cast.[2] Shearer's first impression of The Simpsons was that it was funny. Shearer, who thought it was a "pretty cool" way to work, found it peculiar that the members of the cast were adamant about not being known to the public as the people behind the voices.[6] Shearer provides voices for Principal Skinner, Kent Brockman, Mr. Burns, Waylon Smithers, Ned Flanders, Reverend Lovejoy, Dr. Hibbert, Lenny Leonard, Otto Mann, Rainier Wolfcastle, Scratchy, Kang, Dr. Marvin Monroe, Judge Snyder and many others.[30] He has described all of his regular characters' voices as "easy to slip into. [...] I wouldn't do them if they weren't easy."[29] Shearer modeled Mr. Burns's voice on the two actors Lionel Barrymore and Ronald Reagan.[31] Shearer says that Burns is the most difficult character for him to voice because it is rough on his vocal cords and he often needs to drink tea and honey to soothe his voice.[32] He describes Burns as his favorite character, saying he "like[s] Mr. Burns because he is pure evil. A lot of evil people make the mistake of diluting it. Never adulterate your evil."[33] Shearer is also the voice of Burns' assistant Smithers, and is able to perform dialogue between the two characters in one take. In the episode "Bart's Inner Child", Harry Shearer said "wow" in the voice of Otto, which was then used when Otto was seen jumping on a trampoline.[34] Ned Flanders had been meant to be just a neighbor that Homer was jealous of, but because Shearer used "such a sweet voice" for him, Flanders was broadened to become a Christian and a sweet guy that someone would prefer to live next to over Homer.[35] Dr. Marvin Monroe's voice was based on psychiatrist David Viscott.[36] Monroe has been retired since the seventh season because voicing the character strained Shearer's throat.[37] In 2004, Shearer criticized what he perceived as the show's declining quality: "I rate the last three seasons as among the worst, so season four looks very good to me now."[38] Shearer has also been vocal about "The Principal and the Pauper" (season nine, 1997) one of the most controversial episodes of The Simpsons. Many fans and critics reacted negatively to the revelation that Principal Seymour Skinner, a recurring character since the first season, was an impostor. The episode has been criticized by both Shearer and Groening. In a 2001 interview, Shearer recalled that after reading the script, he told the writers, "That's so wrong. You're taking something that an audience has built eight years or nine years of investment in and just tossed it in the trash can for no good reason, for a story we've done before with other characters. It's so arbitrary and gratuitous, and it's disrespectful to the audience."[39] Due to scheduling and availability conflicts, Shearer decided not to participate in The Simpsons Ride, which opened in 2008, so none of his characters have vocal parts and many do not appear in the ride at all.[40] In a 2010 interview on The Howard Stern Show, Shearer alluded that the reason he was not part of the ride was because he would not be getting paid for it.[41] Until 1998, Shearer was paid $30,000 per episode. During a pay dispute in 1998, Fox threatened to replace the six main voice actors with new actors, going as far as preparing for casting of new voices.[42] The dispute, however, was resolved and Shearer received $125,000 per episode until 2004, when the voice actors demanded that they be paid $360,000 an episode.[42] The dispute was resolved a month later,[43] and Shearer's pay rose to $250,000 per episode.[44] After salary re-negotiations in 2008, the voice actors received $400,000 per episode.[45] Three years later, with Fox threatening to cancel the series unless production costs were cut, Shearer and the other cast members accepted a 30 percent pay cut, down to just over $300,000 per episode.[46] On May 13, 2015, Shearer announced he was leaving the show. After the other voice actors signed a contract for the same pay, Shearer refused, stating it was not enough. Al Jean made a statement from the producers saying "the show must go on," but did not elaborate on what might happen to the characters Shearer voiced.[47] On July 7, 2015, Shearer agreed to continue with the show, on the same terms as the other voice actors.[48] Le Show and radio work[edit] "Because I don't do stand-up, radio has always been my equivalent, a place to stay in connection with the public and force myself to write every week and come up with new characters. Plus it's a medium that – having grown up with it and putting myself to sleep with a radio under my pillow [as a kid] – I love. No matter what picture you want to create in the listener's mind, a few minutes of work gets it done." —Harry Shearer[49] Since 1983, Shearer has been the host of the public radio comedy/music program Le Show. The program is a hodgepodge of satirical news commentary, music, and sketch comedy that takes aim at the "mega morons of the mighty media".[50] It is carried on many National Public Radio and other public radio stations throughout the United States.[51] Since the merger of SIRIUS and XM satellite radio services the program is no longer available on either.[52] The show has also been made available as a podcast on iTunes[53] and by WWNO. On the weekly program Shearer alternates between DJing, reading and commenting on the news of the day after the manner of Mort Sahl, and performing original (mostly political) comedy sketches and songs. In 2008, Shearer released a music CD called Songs of the Bushmen, consisting of his satirical numbers about former President George W. Bush on Le Show.[2] Shearer says he criticizes both Republicans and Democrats equally, and also says that "the iron law of doing comedy about politics is you make fun of whoever is running the place"[54] and that "everyone else is just running around talking. They are the ones who are actually doing something, changing people's lives for better or for worse. Other people the media calls 'satirists' don't work that way."[55] Since encountering satellite news feeds when he worked on Saturday Night Live, Shearer has been fascinated with the contents of the video that does not air. Shearer refers to these clips as found objects. "I thought, wow, there is just an unending supply of this material, and it's wonderful and fascinating and funny and sometimes haunting – but it's always good," said Shearer.[56] He collects this material and uses it on Le Show[57][58] and on his website.[59] In 2008, he assembled video clips of newsmakers from this collection into an art installation titled "The Silent Echo Chamber" which was exhibited at The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield, Connecticut.[56] The exhibit was also displayed in 2009 at Institut Valencià d'Art Modern (IVAM) in Valencia, Spain[60][61] and in 2010 at the New Orleans Contemporary Arts Center.[62] In 2006 Shearer appeared with Brian Hayes in four episodes of the BBC Radio 4 sitcom Not Today, Thank You, playing Nostrils, a man so ugly he cannot stand to be in his own presence.[63] He was originally scheduled to appear in all six episodes but had to withdraw from recording two due to a problem with his work permit.[64] On June 19, 2008, it was announced that Shearer would receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the radio category.[65] The date of the ceremony where his star will be put in place has yet to be announced.[66] Further career[edit] Shearer performing in April 2009 In 2002, Shearer directed his first feature film Teddy Bears' Picnic, which he also wrote. The plot is based on Bohemian Grove, which hosts a three-week encampment of some of the most powerful men in the world. The film was not well received by critics. It garnered a 0% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with all 19 reviews being determined as negative[67] and received a rating of 32 out of 100 (signifying "generally negative reviews") on Metacritic from 10 reviews.[68] In 2003, he co-wrote J. Edgar! The Musical with Tom Leopold, which spoofed J. Edgar Hoover's relationship with Clyde Tolson.[69] It premiered at the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, Colorado and starred Kelsey Grammer and John Goodman.[70] In 2003, Shearer, Guest and McKean starred in the folk music mockumentary A Mighty Wind, portraying a band called The Folksmen. The film was written by Guest and Eugene Levy, and directed by Guest.[6] Shearer had a major role in the Guest-directed parody of Oscar politicking For Your Consideration in 2006. He played Victor Allan Miller, a veteran actor who is convinced that he is going to be nominated for an Academy Award.[71] He also appeared as a news anchor in Godzilla with fellow The Simpsons cast members Hank Azaria and Nancy Cartwright.[72] His other film appearances include The Right Stuff, Portrait of a White Marriage, The Fisher King, The Truman Show, EdTV and Small Soldiers.[73] Shearer has also worked as a columnist for the Los Angeles Times Magazine, but decided that it "became such a waste of time to bother with it."[55] His columns have also been published in Slate and Newsweek.[74] Since May 2005 he has been a contributing blogger at The Huffington Post.[73] Shearer has written three books. Man Bites Town, published in 1993, is a collection of columns that he wrote for The Los Angeles Times between 1989 and 1992.[39] Published in 1999, It's the Stupidity, Stupid analyzed the hatred some people had for then-President Bill Clinton.[75] Shearer believes that Clinton became disliked because he had an affair with "the least powerful, least credentialed women cleared into his official compound."[39] His most recent book is Not Enough Indians, his first novel. Published in 2006, it is a comic novel about Native Americans and gambling.[73] Without the "pleasures of collaboration" and "spontaneity and improvisation which characterize his other projects", Not Enough Indians was a "struggle" for Shearer to write. He said that "the only fun thing about it was having written it. It was lonely, I had no deal for it and it took six years to do. It was a profoundly disturbing act of self-discipline."[2] Shearer has released five solo comedy albums: It Must Have Been Something I Said (1994), Dropping Anchors (2006), Songs Pointed and Pointless (2007), Songs of the Bushmen (2008) and Greed and Fear (2010).[76] His most recent CD, Greed and Fear is mainly about Wall Street economic issues, rather than politics like his previous albums. Shearer decided to make the album when he"started getting amused by the language of the economic meltdown – when 'toxic assets' suddenly became 'troubled assets,' going from something poisoning the system to just a bunch of delinquent youth with dirty faces that needed not removal from the system but just...understanding."[77] In May 2006, Shearer received an honorary doctorate from Goucher College.[78] #HarryShearer #ThisIsSpinalTap #JonHammond #Nashville #TVShow The Big Uneasy[edit] Shearer is the director of The Big Uneasy (2010), a documentary film about the impacts of Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans. Narrated by actor John Goodman, the film describes levee failures and catastrophic flooding in the New Orleans metropolitan area, and includes extended interviews with former LSU professor Ivor Van Heerden, Robert Bea, an engineering professor at the University of California at Berkeley, and Maria Garzino, an engineer and contract specialist for the Los Angeles district of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The film is critical of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and its management of flood protection projects in Southern Louisiana.[79][80][81][82][83] Shearer draws on numerous technical experts to maintain that Hurricane Katrina's "...tragic floods creating widespread damage were caused by manmade errors in engineering and judgment."[84] Shearer's film currently has a 74% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on twenty-three reviews by approved critics.[83] Personal life[edit] Shearer married Penelope Nichols in 1974. They divorced in 1977. He has been married to singer-songwriter Judith Owen since 1993.[2] In 2005, the couple launched their own record label called Courgette Records.[85] Shearer has homes in Santa Monica, California, the French Quarter of New Orleans, Louisiana, and London. He first went to New Orleans in 1988 and has attended every edition of New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival since.[86] Shearer often speaks and writes about the failure of the Federal levee system which flooded New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina, belittling the coverage of it in the mainstream media[87] and criticizing the role of the United States Army Corps of Engineers.[88][89] Prior to the DVD release of his film, The Big Uneasy, Shearer would hold screenings of the film at different venues and take questions from audience members " Identifier HarryShearerInterviewWithJonHammond Scanner Internet Archive HTML5 Uploader 1.6.3 Language English Publication date 2017-08-26 Usage Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 Topics Harry Shearer, Nashville, New Orleans, NAMM Show, This is Spinal Tap, Podcast, Jack Benny, The Simpsons, Rock Band, Jon Hammond, Cable Access TV, MNN TV, Channel 1, #HarryShearer #HammondOrgan #Rocker
