“A happy ending was imperative. I shouldn't have bothered to write otherwise! I was determined that in fiction anyway two men should fall in love and remain in it for the ever and ever that fiction allows, and in this sense Maurice and Alec still roam the greenwood.” — E. M. Forster (around 1913/1914)
✶— alec scudder & maurice hall from the book "maurice" by e.m. forster (using as a reference a scene from the 1987's movie)

I'm reading Maurice (1914) analysing the whole situation with Alec's Scudder point of view and...
Oh. My. God. I finally got it:
Imagine that the handsome gentleman in whom he already became interested lately -
- keeps on coming out of the house few times during single evening
- to walk past him in the dark garden full of wonderful scents of flowers and fruits
- being in distinctively dreamy mood and talking unusually friendly to him
(thanks to aversion Maurice felt to the "damn ugly" Mr Borenius who's "sneering at youth" - he suddenly decided that Scudder "was a fine fellow" and is now "feeling friendly to the reprobate")
And if that was not enough:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- bumping into him with his full body TWICE!!!🤯
Poor Alec, he must have been so on edge that night...😭
No wonder that one word was just enough for him to literally climb the walls!😂🤣

Who wants to talk about Maurice symbolism? I’m writing an essay and would really appreciate some more ideas! :)

thoughts on the boathouse
the goblin house was locked when clive and maurice tried to get into it, but alec and maurice were actually able to rendezvous in the boathouse and hug and kiss etc. this symbolizes how clive and maurice never had a future but alec and maurice did. alec and maurice could access something that clive never could have dreamed of. alec had the key to the boathouse (metaphorical and not) and clive didn’t.
the boathouse as a metaphor for love. clive wanted to be chaste with maurice, he rarely wanted to kiss him. meanwhile alec was VERY VERY tactile and loving all the time.
alec always wanted love and was able to find that in maurice, but clive was so closed off that he lost his chance. even with anne we can see that behind closed doors their relationship is crumbly. they’re stiff and clive can’t give her what she wants - because until he works on himself, he’s almost incapable of love

This is like sweetest movie scene ever for me...
I also consider Forster didn't delete the epilouge in my mind and they were just happy as woodcutters secretly.

'Maurice' meets 'Fellow Travelers'!
As a regular contributor to AO3 I have now come up with a fusion of these two popular fandoms. In 1953, secret agent Maurice Hall is called back from retirement and sent across the Atlantic to perform a task in Her Majesty's service. He meets an attractive, thirty-something American who might or might not be able to provide him with politically hot evidence...
Tumblr media
In the background Clive Durham, Alec Scudder and Tim Laughlin are battling their own problems. Erotic chaos ensues, and what will happen after that? Read and find out!

Get ready for some prime espionage (James Bond happens to be unavailable), sweetness, and Frankie's cheeky attitude!

HOMOSEXUAL . PERIOD . DRAMA
It can steal my heart all it wants I love it it hits so much harder!!
The idea of like it was illegal being sad but the reason it also hits so hard, but the characters end up so close then anything and they have this one secret spot then can go to where they do whatever and live happy :)) OR SAD AND TRAGIC! Not in most cases in diff timelines somehow
I'll take any series or movies with angst and pain, period homosexual stories, hit me with it bc it's just better...
I'm looking at you, Alfred and Henry, Alec and Maurice, Stede x Edward.
And the more homosexual period dramas I have yet to watch or find out
Modern homosexuals just don't hit as hard for some reason...
