surgery
Tumblr media
January 8, 2024
It has been a rough past two days for Connie, having been confirmed her jaw was broken and needed surgery and having to wait to get surgery while she’s been in quite a lot of pain and moving at all makes the pain worse, also having to get use to drinking liquids so she has not been having a good time.
Connie knew her mom had a very important conference through out the week and made her mom stay there not wanting her to miss it and she promised to update her family on everything.
Since Connie didn’t have her mom with her and the team also got back from Jersey so late the team had asked someone to stay with her and Alex offered right away so he’s been staying with her for the last two days only leaving for a game and practice.
Connie was currently waiting in the hospital bed about to get taken back to finally get her surgery and hopefully get on the road of recovering and to get back on the ice.
Alex was of course with her sitting in the chair next to her and Jason was also there but not with his wife and daughter because they didn’t want to have newborn in the hospital for most the day, something that Connor completely agreed on.
Connie fiddled with her hands trying to not freak out about having surgery in a few minutes.
Alex put his hand on top of her hands, stopping her from fiddling and gave her a gentle squeeze, “You’re gonna be okay Bubbles.” Alex spoke to her softly reassuring her, “It will be over before you know it.”
Connie managed a weak smile.
Jason raised an eyebrow at the two smirking knowingly.
“He’s right.” The nurse spoke as she walked into the hospital room, “It will be over very quickly.” The nurse reassured Connie as she unlocked the wheels of her bed.
Alex squeezed her hands once more giving her an encouraging look before standing up and walking over to Jason and standing next to him.
Connie waved at the two as the nurse wheeled her out of the room.
“Such a sweet boyfriend you have sweetheart.” The nurse commented as she wheeled Connie down the hallways.
Connie’s eyes widened in shock and her cheeks turned bright red right away, she shook her head no, she was not dating Alex but she was confused why that the idea of her dating Alex made her feel this way.
The nurse raised a skeptical eyebrow seeing Connie shake her head no, “Well you better tell him that, he stares at you with so much love.” She could tell that boy is in love with Connie it was obvious with how he looks at her.
Connie didn’t respond but her brows were furrowed thinking if the nurse was correct but she was not sure what she felt for Alex but she could worry about that later as she was wheeled in to the Operating room.
Connie stared at the bright lights on the ceiling before the mask was placed on her face over her mouth as she closed her eyes.

Mason hugging Jake, Charlotte and Amelia love to see a bromance
Mason and Jake had grown so much closer after they got with their girls "I love them." Charlotte giggled as she kicked her feet "they're so cute!" Amelia nodded in agreement as she tucked her hair behind her ears as she watched them hug.
The boys were always so sweet with each other and it made the girls love how well they got on "and then they don't act like they are best friends!" jake and Mason refused to admit the new bromance that had formed for the both of them.

Congrats to the ultimate winner of the Hot & Vintage Movie Men Tournament, Mr. Toshiro Mifune! May he live happily and well where the sun always shines, enjoying the glories of a battle hard fought.
Tumblr media
A loving farewell to all of our previous contestants, who are now banished to the shadow realm and all its dark joys and whispered horrors—I hear there's a picnic on the village green today. If you want to remember the fallen heroes, you can find them all beneath the cut.
What happens next? I'll be taking a break of two weeks to rest from this and prep for the Hot & Vintage Ladies Tournament. I'll still be around but only minimally, posting a few last odes to the hot men before transitioning into a little early ladies content, just like I did with this last tournament. The submission form for the Hot & Vintage Ladies tournament will remain up for one more week (closing February 21st), so get your submissions in for that asap! Once the form closes, there will be one more week of break. The first round of the Hot & Vintage Ladies Tournament will be posted on February 29th, as Leap Year Day seems like a fitting allusion to leaping into these ladies' arms.

shades of green
Tumblr media
September 7, 2023
Connie walked down the hallway of the Blackhawks Arena and into the locker room for the first day of training camp.
She’s been in Chicago a couple times alreadly since the draft and likes the city pretty well already. She spent almost two weeks after the draft for the development camp and then signing her ELC.
Connie saw her name on the stall between Nick Foligno and Lukas, she walked over seeing Nick already sitting there.
She met Nick and his family the last time she was in Chicago and he was one of the few players in the city in the off season as they were moving and trying to get the kids settled. Connie really enjoys spending time with his kids and she had a feeling she would be spending a lot more time with them throughout the season.
“Hey Con.” Nick smiled a fatherly smile seeming to already taken Connie under his wing, not that she truly needed it she was natural at adjusting.
“Hi.” Connor soflty spoke back with an awkward nod as she sat down on her stall and took a deep breath calming her anxiety and hoping she will impress the team enough she would be staying on the team for the next season.
Connie knows everyone already thinks she is on the teams roster and it’s not even a question that the coaches want her on their team but Connie doesn’t care she’s going into this camp trying to prove she deserves a spot and she doesn’t want to just expect a spot because she went number one overall.
“Hey Vla.” Nick greeted as Alex walked into the room and sat down on the stall next to him.
“Nick.” Alex smiled nodding accepting Nick’s fist bump.
“Have you met Con yet?” Nick questioned, even with this being his first season with the team he still took the step to make sure the younger and newer players were settling in well.
“I haven’t.” Alex shook his head no and looked over at her, obviously he has seen photos and videos of her especially with her on the ice but seeing her up close she was stunning but her eyes, they were incredible with many different shades of green.
Alex shook his head clearing his throat noticing he was staring, “I’m Alex.” Alex smiled crookedly at her holding his hand out.
“Connie.” Connie softly introduced herself shaking his head softly.
Alex could only focus on how much smaller her hand was in his hand and knew he was screwed.

photos from here, I NEED FOOTAGE OF THIS. also this article is a great read. he’s invited some families who lost their homes in the halifax fires to practice:
By the time you read this, Pittsburgh Penguins players will have munched on the pudding known as haggis, made from the livers, hearts and lungs of sheep. And learned how to shuck oysters, in all their slimy, gooey glory.
All courtesy of Sidney Crosby, the Pittsburgh captain, who brought team building to an entirely new level on Saturday. From the moment months ago that he learned the Penguins would be playing here, Crosby was stoked. A proud native of Cole Harbour, 10 miles from Halifax, the 36-year-old began planning out his transformation from NHL star to tour guide.
“I think just the feel of it, the people, and to see the excitement for the game,” Crosby said Friday. “And just to get around the city a little bit, those types of things.
“It’s somewhere that I’m really proud of, and I hope everyone enjoys themselves there.”
In order to do that, he set something up with a unique Maritime flavor. Welcome to “The Amazing Race: Crosby Edition.”
“When Sidney found out the team was coming here, he wanted to find a fun way to celebrate his hometown with his teammates and educate them on why it’s such a special place,” his father, Troy, said.
He seems to have done exactly that.
After a morning of golf Saturday, the unsuspecting Penguins set out on an “Amazing Race”-like scavenger-hunt competition that would take them through the streets of Cole Harbour, Dartmouth and downtown Halifax, and across Halifax Harbour on a ferry.
Under the format, the players were divided into teams. They were given instructions of where to go, what venues to visit and what tasks they were to do (e.g., eating haggis, shucking oysters), all while going up against the clock.
The instructions came on laminated cards featuring the Penguins logo and a “Welcome to Cole Harbour” greeting.
The message on one of the cards read, “Every player has to shuck two oysters and eat them or have a teammate eat them on their behalf. Careful with that knife, and don’t break any shells!”
Crosby enlisted the help of Paul Mason, one of his baseball and minor hockey coaches, to help plan the event. Mason was paramount in setting up the three Cole Harbour Stanley Cup celebrations in Crosby’s honor, and No. 87 didn’t hesitate when it came to the perfect person to set up this event.
“In organizing this, when he talked to me about it, he wants this entire weekend to be pretty special for the community, for his teammates, for everyone around him,” Mason said. “You can sense how much these few days mean to him. You could sense his anticipation for months.”
Mason said that even though Crosby is the host for his teammates this weekend, he’s going to try to win everything: golf, the scavenger hunt, the preseason game Monday, you name it.
“He’s competitive at everything, even as a little kid when I was coaching him,” Mason said. “And that hasn’t changed.
“When the NHL was shut down during COVID, his dad Troy and I played Sidney and one of his friends in a golf match. They should have won, but somehow we did. He didn’t accept that. He said it was two out of three. When we won the second one he said it was three out of five. We ended up playing seven of them. The seventh one was in December with snow on the ground. They won that one to take the series 4-3. Suddenly that was acceptable because they’d won.
“Once they’d finally won, it was over,” Mason said with a laugh.
During some of those summers, Greenwood has helped organize some of the offseason skates featuring Crosby, MacKinnon and Marchand at a local arena. The competitiveness gets intense at times, something Greenwood said helps all three drive each other.
“Yeah, they’re friends,” he said. “But when they start playing against each other at times, you’d never know it. They want to beat one another at any and all costs.
“You can see how that drive, that determination, that win-at-all-costs attitude rubs off on some of the younger guys.”
Count Drake Batherson as one of them. The 25-year-old Senators forward grew up in New Minas, 50 miles northwest of Halifax, and has been training during the offseason with Crosby, Marchand and MacKinnon since 2019. He calls those workouts “one of my favorite times of the year.”
As such, he’s looking forward to facing Crosby and the Penguins in Halifax on Monday.
“I've still got posters of the Penguins and Sid on my wall at my parents' house, so it's pretty fun now that me and Sid have built a relationship and we're buddies," Batherson said. "It's pretty cool looking back on it.”
It was a tough spring and summer for Nova Scotia.
In late May and early June, wildfires raged through the outskirts of Halifax and throughout the province. More than 16,000 people were forced to evacuate as a result, many eventually returning to find their homes were nothing more than heaps of smoldering ashes.
Less than two months later, the area was hit with record rainfall that caused historic flooding. Water did seep into Crosby’s home, though to nowhere near the extent of some others where people pretty much lost everything.
“The area has been through a lot,” he said. “But the great thing about some of these communities, and the area in general, is that everyone sticks together and everyone’s willing to help each other.
“I think when you’ve seen adverse times here over the years, you’ve seen people come together more and more. And I think we take a lot of pride in that here. The fact that people know they can depend on each other is huge. I think we’ve shown that time and time again, and there’s pride that comes with that.”
Crosby is doing his part to teach local kids exactly that.
On Sunday, the Penguins will hold a practice at Cole Harbour Place. Hundreds of children from the local minor hockey systems have been invited to attend and take part in a Q&A session with some Pittsburgh players and, with a select few kids getting to go on the ice with them.
Part of that group will be kids from minor hockey whose families lost their homes in the fires. Crosby specifically wanted them to attend, with Mason helping to make it happen. Given the trauma they and their families have gone through, it is Crosby’s way of trying to brighten up their lives, even if it’s just for one afternoon.
“That’s Sid, right?” Greenwood said. “He’s going to have an impact on these kids, both on the ice and off.”
He already has.
In 2009, Crosby established the Sidney Crosby Foundation, an organization that improves the lives of children who are sick or struggling. More recently, Crosby and several foundation board members created Nova Scotia Showdown T-shirts heading into the game Monday, with proceeds going to his foundation.
“He’s helping young kids who are going through hard times, and he’s being a role model for young hockey players in the province,” Mason said. “He’s going out of his way to show his Penguins a good time here, and he’s being a great ambassador for the community.”
Greenwood agrees.
“It’s a privilege,” he said, “to say you live in the same place as someone like that.”

HARRY CROSBY NEEDS A HUG
The following passages are excepts from Harry Crosby’s memoir, A Wing and a Prayer:
“I was getting tired of losing all my friends.”
“"Did all my friends get back from pass?" I ask.
No sound. I know something is wrong. He is trying to figure out how to break the bad news.
I come in quick. "Did some of them have a permanent change of station?"
"Yes, all but one."
All but one! That means that maybe twenty planes got shot down.
The weatherman breaks the code. "Egan's gone. Your old crew is gone. The whole group is gone. The only one who came back was that new crew in the 418th. They call him Rosie."
I drop the phone. I can't believe it. Brady, Ham, Davy and Hoerr, all gone. Cruikshank gone. Old southern-boy Murph, gone.
All my friends. Every crew who went through training with me in the States is gone.”
“Since I was not flying on missions, life at Thorpe Abbotts should have been easier for me.
It wasn't.
As I look back I think the losses were beginning to get to me.”
*it only gets worse under the cut*
“I don't think I worried so much about getting shot down myself.”
“If I got shot down, I wanted to be well dressed, with all my ribbons on display. When I went into the air, I felt the weight of the whole world on me. What if I screwed up and missed a rendezvous and left the 100th unprotected? What if I had been the lead navigator at Münster, or on the bad Berlin raid? All those losses attributable to me?”
“I should have felt better.
But I didn't.
Everyone else seemed to have a life that had limits. They either flew their missions and went home, or got shot down. Kaput.
With me it went on and on.”
“If I got shot down I wouldn't have to worry about the war anymore.”
“Life on the base was not easy.
At Thorpe Abbotts, we didn't lose men only on missions. We lost them on bicycles, as Americans tried to cycle home at night from the pubs. Dark. No lights. Into a culvert. A broken shoulder bone.
We lost crews when we shouldn't have lost them.
A pilot going up to slow-time an engine after it was overhauled was busy looking at his instruments at the head of the runway. He began to roll just as three other planes came in from a practice mission.
Crash. All four planes piled into each other. Only two men killed.
On one mission, with an experimentally heavier bomb load, three planes could not lift off and smashed into the revetment at the end of the runway. All crews lost. Thirty human beings.
On another occasion, seven planes piled into each other as they all tried to land at once. Five men killed and seven planes salvaged and cannibalized. Carnage.
This was getting to me.”
“As a second lieutenant on Brady's crew, I was eager, unsure of myself, navigating by keeping my eyes on the plane up ahead. As a first lieutenanant on Blakely's crew I was still eager and unsure of myself, but I was in the plane up ahead. To do my job, I almost tore myself in two. Missions drained everything out of me that was in me. As a captain Group Navigator, I was still eager and unsure—no planes were in front of me, and the missions still took everything out of me. When I got out of a plane after a mission I was so exhausted I could hardly walk. I smelled so much of sweat I left my flying clothes outside my barracks to air.”
“Then the crew went home.
And another batch of my friends were gone.
On the Russia Shuttle I had come to know Bucky Mason, the pilot from Texas who flirted with Maja Krootz, our vivacious interpreter. As a command pilot he was highly respected by my navigators. He went out on what was to be his last mission—and did not come back. The whole low squadron got blown out of the air, and none of them were in the formation that flew, after the mission, over the control tower. As I stood there waiting for them, two planes ran into each other on the runway. They blew up, killing nineteen men right in front of me.
It wasn't only that my friends were gone. The spirit was gone.
The laughter. Ham, Brady, Warsaw, Crankshaft, Solomon, Murph—always good for a laugh—were gone. Under Darr Alkire and Chick Harding as Group Commanders, anything went with the 100th and it did. When Bucky Cleven and Bucky Egan were setting the tone of the 100th, there was dash. There was derring-do. Flying the war was an adventure.
Now, under Bennett and Jeffrey, we were doing what we should have done. We hit targets and we lost fewer planes.
On missions almost no one wore a white scarf. The flamboyance made the war endurable. Now it was gone. The 100th was a quieter place.
On the twentieth, we sent the group to Merseburg, and they got smacked by the worst flak barrage until that time. As we waited for them at the control tower, we counted. Eight missing.
Hard on me.”
“I remember my friends, those who made it through and those who did not. I remember the tragedies, and the horror, but I remember the laughter.”
