I select a lot of stories without fully understanding the plot since I don't want to spoil, so sometimes it's a dice roll as to how much spookiness is contained in a given story. But this one delivers after it winds its way through a tale of marital impropriety and the ~horror~ of an unmarried woman's dishonor.

A Bluebeard story somehow always finds itself into my horror list each year, but they're usually taking the original and flipping it on its head. This one's short and sweet and probably could have told the tale without the direct references, but with so few pages it's perhaps best to make things explicit.

I liked this a lot, despite a lot of reviews about how mediocre it is. While it does a lot by the numbers, the point here is to give it a cultural spin based on Hindu tales of terror, and that's what makes it special. And I'm always a sucker for high schoolers not being believed by adults and having to take things into their own hands. (In fiction, not in real life where adults should be less shitty about supporting teens.)

The archdiocese of Baltimore, the oldest in the United States, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Friday, two days before a new state law goes into effect allowing child sexual abuse victims to sue organizations no matter how long ago the abuse took place.

Archbishop William E. Lori attributed the filing directly to the law’s effect on the archdiocese, which is facing “a great number of lawsuits” that were previously prohibited by state law, he said in a letter to the archdiocese on Friday.

Filing for bankruptcy, Archbishop Lori said, is “the best path forward to compensate equitably all victim-survivors, given the archdiocese’s limited financial resources, which would have otherwise been exhausted on litigation.”

The bankruptcy filing stops all lawsuits against the archdiocese, which could have been filed starting at 12:01 a.m. on Sunday. Instead, a judge will oversee the reorganization of the archdiocese, ultimately setting a deadline for victims to file their claims in bankruptcy court.

The archdiocese of Baltimore is the latest of more than a dozen dioceses and archdioceses in the United States to currently be in bankruptcy proceedings. That’s in addition to 19 dioceses that have emerged from bankruptcy, according to a list maintained by Marie T. Reilly, a professor at Penn State Law.

The biggest music haul ever had been made. So big that I needed two visits to the same store, Jesus, and fucking Mary to pull it off. High Fidelity’s stock has gotten so stuffed that there were piles and piles of disorganized vinyl records, discs, and cassettes all over the place. Under the bins, on top of the bins, on the floor, up high on the wall that you can’t reach. Mark the owner was so bad with overstock that he moved two blocks down to a bigger space and that wasn’t enough. His downstairs stock room he once boasted was off-limits and even a stack of vinyl records almost fell on me from above. It was a literal death hazard - but I survived. You’d think that two round-trips and $893.00 spent would be the penultimate event to cap off another intensive record-store victory tour. No.

There were two other stores I’d yet to visit. Plainview’s Vinyl Bay 777 and Amangansett’s Innersleeve Records. The one time I went to Vinyl Bay- was when I walked out empty-handed because they marked all of their stock three to four times more what other stores sold. There was no reason for me to pay more than I should for a vinyl record I could find elsewhere for a third or fourth of the price. Vinyl Bay was disqualified. That left Innersleeve Records a place of interest. I didn’t go in the previous round and had considered making the ninety-minute trip out to the East End to check it out - until I saw their latest social media post. Ouch! Their prices were even higher than that of Vinyl Bay’s and on new pressings. Vinyl-price cockfighting at its finest. I wanted no part of it. That moment I declared my island run of stores done. Nope. That’s it. I don’t want to hear it any more. La la la la la la fuck you.

Though, there was one store in New York City I was meaning to visit. That was Greenpoint’s Captured Tracks. My show Omega WUSB had just done a three-hour label tribute about the feel-good label and we always played their artists when we found them. They were around for years with no sign of stopping, so why not come take a ride and check it out? Let’s have another bonus round with another city jaunt, shall we?

Late July’s weather isn’t the most colorful but it’s certainly the brightest when it has cloud cover. I stood at the Central Islip platform and look up to see the lit white skies in 80*F weather. I board the train westward to Penn Station and…what a surprise? It’s thunder-storming and raining mercilessly. I didn’t see this coming, so I have no choice but to deal with it.

Deal with it I did. God didn’t give me lemons but instead gave me a 9/2 offsuit. I arrived at Penn Station and transferred to catch the ‘E’ line. It was insufferable. This was a sneak preview of the 7th Circle Of Hell. Everyone dealt with post-rain humidity in a limited underground space and were dying like dogs. I was drenched in sweat and felt like my clothes were falling off. The ‘E’ arrived and what a saving grace. I felt the cold chill of the air conditioner settling on me, erasing the half-an-hour of disgusting unease. The ‘E’ ended its travel and I transfer to the ‘G’ line to Greenpoint. In five minutes it was all over.

I walk up the stairs to Manhattan Ave. and I see nothing but hazy blue skies and sharp sunshine beaming on me, as if the rainstorm never even happened. I’m back at my element. I walk south on Manhattan Ave. to observe and breathe in what was Brooklyn to me. Two blonde women in Polish tongues walk past me as I process the storefronts, the graffiti, sticker vandalism, and cramped crooked sidewalks. I approach and turn the corner on Calyer Street only to learn that I walked past Captured Tracks?! I turn around and I finally found it. The way to The House of Mike Sniper was downstairs. It was a dream, was it? I never had to take a downwards path to any establishment. I hobbled below and here we are: a dense but neatly-packed music store with plenty of boxes of 45”, pricey first- and rare pressings, bins to fumble through, and several lower shelves of records not for sale designated for their Discogs store. It was going to be another intense day digging in the bins.

Three hours and $117.00 later, I finally declared my record-store victory tour of ‘22 finished for good. Nothing else fitting to cap it off with another perfect day in Greenpoint. I walk up Manhattan Avenue with my tote of vinyl records away from the clear sharp sun as its intensive rays bake into my skin. The skies bluer and the air much dryer. Then I notice something I didn’t expect to find: Sunshine Laundromat. Here’s another place I was dying to visit since my post-operation; one which my radio station friends decided to go without me. I’m here, so why not? I’m about to walk into a surreal dream - in reality.

I walk in and I couldn’t believe it. It’s the first time I walked into a laundromat since my stay in Lindenhurst. I walk down the narrow space past the rogue pinball tables and there was the secret door disguised as stackable units that led into the back room arcade. A speak-easy if I ever saw one. All that stood between me and that Murphy door was the nice lady who ran the place. She told me they would re-open the pinball speakeasy as soon as the city OKs their alcohol license. Sounds hopeful if you ask me. I thanked her for the good news and walked out knowing there will be another reason to come back to Brooklyn.

I head on to the ‘G’ to transfer and ride on the ‘E’ line back to Penn Station. It’s 7PM and the visible sun is coming down for the day; slowly sinking against the perfectly clean sky blue backdrop with no clouds in sight. I board the train back home and take a window seat moving backwards. The train motions and the blinding sun peeks through the window as I feel the frigid blanket of the air conditioner. There’s a sparse placement of riders in the same car as me. I can sit and relax knowing that my entire run of spending money all over New York City and Long Island has come to a satisfying end.

10 curiosità su Agatha Christie

1 - Fino all'età di 8 anni, sua madre non voleva che lei imparasse a leggere. Abbiamo quindi rischiato di perdere una delle migliori "penne" del panorama letterario mondiale.

2 - Poirot a Styles Court, una delle sue prime novelle, è stata scritta per una scommessa con la sorella Madge. È stata lei, vedendo la passione della sorella per la scrittura, a sfidarla a produrre un romanzo e non solo piccole storielle. Tutto sommato, ha funzionato!

3 - Hercule Poirot è ispirato a una persona realmente esistente: un belga che la stessa Christie vide scendere da un pullman nei primi anni '10. La sua camminata stramba e la particolarità del suo volto e dei suoi baffi colpirono la scrittrice che decise di "usarlo" come protagonista per svariati suoi romanzi.

4 - Fin dai primi romanzi si intuisce che Agatha Christie non adora la violenza. Fateci caso, la maggior parte degli omicidi avviene per avvelenamento e davvero in rari casi il killer usa una pistola o le maniere forti.

5 - Molti hanno un'immagine di lei corrucciata, impegnata 24 ore su 24 a scrivere, scrivere, scrivere. Lei invece adorava surfare ed è spesso andata in cerca di onde giganti in Sud Africa e addirittura ad Honolulu. Non ve lo sareste mai aspettato vero?

6 - Nel 1926, quando ormai aveva una discreta fama scomparve per 10 giorni. I problemi con il marito la portarono a far perdere le sue tracce per un po'. Scattò subito l'allarme e misero un investigatore privato a cercarla ma lei si era semplicemente rinchiusa in una SPA per recuperare un po' di energie.

7 - Aveva un alias. Ebbene sì, ben 6 suoi romanzi sono stati pubblicati con il nome di Mary Westmacott, nome inventato che nasce dall'unione del suo secondo nome, Mary, e dal cognome di alcuni suoi parenti.

8 - Il New York Times ha dedicato una copertina a Poirot negli anni '50. In occasione della pubblicazione di Sipario, opera in cui muore il noto investigatore belga, il quotidiano americano ha dedicato un necrologio in prima pagina a questo iconico personaggio.

9 - La casa dove Agatha Christie ha passato gran parte della sua vita si trova a Devonshire, in Inghilterra. Attualmente è disabitata ma potete affittarla per circa 500€ a notte.10 - Forse in pochi lo sanno ma la Regina del giallo aveva una forte passione per l'archeologia. Dopo il naufragio della storia con Archie, Agatha si è fidanzata con un archeologo, Max Mallowan che l'ha spesso portata a fare dei sopralluoghi in Siria e Iraq in aree dal forte impatto storico.

Last movie: History of the World: Part 1 rewatch in anticipation for Part 2. But Scream VI tomorrow finally! And after that, the Luther movie at some point.

Currently watching: The aforementioned History of the World: Part 2 (roughly half the skits were great, half were painful), The Last of Us, The Mandalorian, What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim? (as I just found it on Hulu and loved the webtoon), Sanditon, Call the Midwife, Marie Antoinette, Tom Jones, Call My Agent! (I need to watch 10 Percent too, but CMA is on Netflix and has Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, which is who I want to be when I grow up). 

Currently working on: Oh, a constant mishmash of replies, researching costumes for my conventions this year (one of my local friends is revamping her Despair!Kazuichi for a con and is giving me all the more reason to bring Despair!Sonia back out again, even if I wore her last year at this event. We wish we had a Gundham!), work, absolutely losing my shit with Jennifer L. Armentrout’s From Blood and Ash getting picked up by Amazon before we’ve even seen an ACOTAR finalized script/casting/anything from Hulu (ACOTAR > FBAA by a long shot. Heck, give us the Throne of Glass series we were promised!), prepping for cooking date with the husband on Saturday (we’re making a tomato-based chicken curry full of veggies with white rice (his) and shirataki/konjac rice (mine).

The biggest music haul ever had been made. So big that I needed two visits to the same store, Jesus, and fucking Mary to pull it off. High Fidelity’s stock has gotten so stuffed that there were piles and piles of disorganized vinyl records, discs, and cassettes all over the place. Under the bins, on top of the bins, on the floor, up high on the wall that you can’t reach. Mark the owner was so bad with overstock that he moved two blocks down to a bigger space and that wasn’t enough. His downstairs stock room he once boasted was off-limits and even a stack of vinyl records almost fell on me from above. It was a literal death hazard - but I survived. You’d think that two round-trips and $893.00 spent would be the penultimate event to cap off another intensive record-store victory tour. No.

There were two other stores I’d yet to visit. Plainview’s Vinyl Bay 777 and Amangansett’s Innersleeve Records. The one time I went to Vinyl Bay- was when I walked out empty-handed because they marked all of their stock three to four times more what other stores sold. There was no reason for me to pay more than I should for a vinyl record I could find elsewhere for a third or fourth of the price. Vinyl Bay was disqualified. That left Innersleeve Records a place of interest. I didn’t go in the previous round and had considered making the ninety-minute trip out to the East End to check it out - until I saw their latest social media post. Ouch! Their prices were even higher than that of Vinyl Bay’s and on new pressings. Vinyl-price cockfighting at its finest. I wanted no part of it. That moment I declared my island run of stores done. Nope. That’s it. I don’t want to hear it any more. La la la la la la fuck you.

Though, there was one store in New York City I was meaning to visit. That was Greenpoint’s Captured Tracks. My show Omega WUSB had just done a three-hour label tribute about the feel-good label and we always played their artists when we found them. They were around for years with no sign of stopping, so why not come take a ride and check it out? Let’s have another bonus round with another city jaunt, shall we?

Late July’s weather isn’t the most colorful but it’s certainly the brightest when it has cloud cover. I stood at the Central Islip platform and look up to see the lit white skies in 80*F weather. I board the train westward to Penn Station and…what a surprise? It’s thunder-storming and raining mercilessly. I didn’t see this coming, so I have no choice but to deal with it.

Deal with it I did. God didn’t give me lemons but instead gave me a 9/2 offsuit. I arrived at Penn Station and transferred to catch the ‘E’ line. It was insufferable. This was a sneak preview of the 7th Circle Of Hell. Everyone dealt with post-rain humidity in a limited underground space and were dying like dogs. I was drenched in sweat and felt like my clothes were falling off. The ‘E’ arrived and what a saving grace. I felt the cold chill of the air conditioner settling on me, erasing the half-an-hour of disgusting unease. The ‘E’ ended its travel and I transfer to the ‘G’ line to Greenpoint. In five minutes it was all over.

I walk up the stairs to Manhattan Ave. and I see nothing but hazy blue skies and sharp sunshine beaming on me, as if the rainstorm never even happened. I’m back at my element. I walk south on Manhattan Ave. to observe and breathe in what was Brooklyn to me. Two blonde women in Polish tongues walk past me as I process the storefronts, the graffiti, sticker vandalism, and cramped crooked sidewalks. I approach and turn the corner on Calyer Street only to learn that I walked past Captured Tracks?! I turn around and I finally found it. The way to The House of Mike Sniper was downstairs. It was a dream, was it? I never had to take a downwards path to any establishment. I hobbled below and here we are: a dense but neatly-packed music store with plenty of boxes of 45”, pricey first- and rare pressings, bins to fumble through, and several lower shelves of records not for sale designated for their Discogs store. It was going to be another intense day digging in the bins.

Three hours and $117.00 later, I finally declared my record-store victory tour of ‘22 finished for good. Nothing else fitting to cap it off with another perfect day in Greenpoint. I walk up Manhattan Avenue with my tote of vinyl records away from the clear sharp sun as its intensive rays bake into my skin. The skies bluer and the air much dryer. Then I notice something I didn’t expect to find: Sunshine Laundromat. Here’s another place I was dying to visit since my post-operation; one which my radio station friends decided to go without me. I’m here, so why not? I’m about to walk into a surreal dream - in reality.

I walk in and I couldn’t believe it. It’s the first time I walked into a laundromat since my stay in Lindenhurst. I walk down the narrow space past the rogue pinball tables and there was the secret door disguised as stackable units that led into the back room arcade. A speak-easy if I ever saw one. All that stood between me and that Murphy door was the nice lady who ran the place. She told me they would re-open the pinball speakeasy as soon as the city OKs their alcohol license. Sounds hopeful if you ask me. I thanked her for the good news and walked out knowing there will be another reason to come back to Brooklyn.

I head on to the ‘G’ to transfer and ride on the ‘E’ line back to Penn Station. It’s 7PM and the visible sun is coming down for the day; slowly sinking against the perfectly clean sky blue backdrop with no clouds in sight. I board the train back home and take a window seat moving backwards. The train motions and the blinding sun peeks through the window as I feel the frigid blanket of the air conditioner. There’s a sparse placement of riders in the same car as me. I can sit and relax knowing that my entire run of spending money all over New York City and Long Island has come to a satisfying end.

Who were Johnson and Costello?

In the tradition of both the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, local posts are named for a deceased veteran, or deceased veterans, whether that person died during a conflict involving the American military or died later on after their service to our country had ended. In Penn Yan, the local American Legion organization is known as Johnson-Costello Post 355.

It is easy to overlook these two names and think of them as just the name of an organization or just the name on a building. Then again, maybe you are like me – you saw the names, you know the tradition of post naming, and you wondered: who were Johnson and Costello?

The answer is quite simple: Pfc. Harold H. Johnson and Pvt. Charles E. Costello were first two soldiers from Yates County to die during World War I. Costello died of meningitis on April 9, 1918, less than two weeks after arriving in France for overseas service. Johnson was killed in action near Cantigny, France on May 28, 1918, nearly a year after he first went overseas.

The answer becomes more detailed when one takes a few moments to consider these men did not just give their names to an organization and to a building but gave their lives in the name of freedom and security for people around the world. One must consider these men are not just their names; these men had lives and families and stories. It is my aim to pay tribute to these men and their service and sacrifice by shedding some light in this article on who they were and what they did.

Charles E. Costello was born on July 29, 1891 in Penn Yan; in E.D. Harrison’s book “Yates County in the World War,” a compilation of county residents who served during the conflict, Costello’s address is listed as 129 Elm St. in the village.  He was the second son and fourth of five children for Patrick and Mary Costello; brother John and sisters Annabel, Nellie, and Jane were left behind to grieve as well.

Costello was one of the first Yates County men to leave for wartime service, being inducted in Penn Yan on September 9, 1917. According to Harrison’s book, he served with Battery E of the 307th Field Artillery from his induction until March 21, 1918. Then, he served with the 35th Engineers Camp Dix Replacement Draft until his death. With his rank of private, he worked as a horseshoer. Perhaps not coincidentally, his father had a horseshoeing business in Penn Yan behind the family home at which Costello worked prior to entering the Army.

He left for overseas service on March 29, 1918, and a day or two before his family received the notice of his death, his family received a card – signed by Costello – announcing the safe arrival of the transport ship in France. Apparently, the cards were signed by the soldiers in advance and then sent from Washington, D.C. upon the transport’s arrival. His family also received a letter from Costello, dated April 5, 1918, in which he describes life aboard the ship and reports he expects to arrive in France soon. Costello died on April 9, 1918 at age 26, the first Yates County man to die in service during the war.

A public memorial service was held at St. Michael’s Church, though his body was buried in France with full military honors as was the custom of the War Department during the war. After the war, however, “one of the largest funerals that was ever held in this village” took place in Penn Yan in May 1920, according to a Geneva Daily Times article, when Costello’s body was repatriated to his hometown and buried in St. Michael’s Cemetery – where his parents, brother, and one sister are also buried.

According to the article, when Costello’s body reached Penn Yan from France, an escort from the American Legion post bearing his name met the remains at the Northern Central train depot and followed a procession to Corcoran’s undertaking establishment on Main Street and then to the family home on Elm Street. The newspaper reported the funeral was “largely attended, every available seat in the large building (St. Michael’s Church) being taken and there were many present who were unable to secure seats and stood up during the services.” The St. Michael’s rector spoke “feelingly of the young man’s standing and character in the community prior to his leaving for war service, of the public gathering that was held on the Sunday evening that he left town and also of his war record.”

One hundred ten members of the newly formed American Legion post attended the funeral, including a firing squad, a bugler, active pall bearers, and honorary pall bearers. Several thousand people witnessed the interment, the newspaper stated.

Harold H. Johnson was born June 21, 1898 to Frederick and Almeda Johnson; whether Harold was their only child or he had siblings is unclear. Though Harrison’s book lists Johnson’s hometown as Penn Yan, it is possible the man was actually from Bellona. His cenotaph – and his parents’ burial place – is located in the Bellona Cemetery, and his parents’ address in Harrison’s book is listed as R.D. 1, Penn Yan, which could lead to the Bellona area.

Though Costello is described as one of the first Yates County men to leave for service during the World War, Johnson actually joined the military before the man with whom he shares namesake honors of the American Legion post. According to Harrison, Johnson enlisted at Fort Scriven, Georgia on March 2, 1917. He served with Co. D, 26th Infantry until January 2, 1918 and then with Co. C, 2nd Brigade Machine Gun Battalion until his death. He served overseas from June 14, 1917 until his death.

Johnson was killed in action on May 28, 1918, less than a month before his 20th birthday, as the first man from Yates County to die in combat during the war. The notice sent to his family cites Johnson for “gallantry in action and especially meritorious service” and states he “died with honor in service of his country.”

After Johnson’s mother submitted a letter to the Paris Edition of the New York Herald – printed in the March 5, 1919 edition of the Yates County Chronicle – asking for details about her son’s death and burial, the family and the public learned Johnson died instantly after being hit in the head with either a machine gun bullet or a shell fragment. Johnson’s company had been ordered to take the town of Cantigny from German forces on the morning of May 28; the troops took the town in 25 minutes. The company then withstood six counterattacks, and Johnson was killed while operating his machine gun during this sixth attack. Like all of the fallen that day, Johnson was buried on the battlefield and his mother was assured her son received a decent burial with a marked grave.

“As a friend of his I will pay tribute to his memory and say that he was a fine fellow, clean and straight and always trying to help his comrades,” Pvt. Lloyd Williams wrote to Johnson’s mother.

According to a March 1989 article in The Chronicle-Express, the American Legion post in Penn Yan formed in August 1919 – less than a year after the World War ended and about five months after the American Legion itself formed – as the first such post in Yates County. Newspaper articles of the time period indicate it may have been during a dinner held in October 1919 – with 75 out of the post’s 100 members attending – that the post would be named after Johnson and Costello.

Nick Cannon will star in new game show, 'Who's Having My Baby?'

Nick Cannon, father of 12, announced March 7 he is expecting again. This time, it's a game show.

In a post shared to Instagram, Cannon, 42, revealed he would be starring in "Who's Having My Baby," hosted by comedian Kevin Hart. The show will premiere this spring on E!, but few details were released in the teaser.

"You're going to get some contestants that want to have your baby," Hart says in the short promo, suggesting the show will focus on women interested in procreating with Cannon. 

The "Wild 'n Out" host teased fans on social media March 6 with a cryptic Instagram story featuring a baby bottle emoji.

"Expect some big news tomorrow," Cannon wrote alongside a curious eyes emoji and a baby bottle emoji that had fans speculating an announcement of baby No. 13.

Cannon is notoriously the father of 12 children, whom he shares with six women, including twins, Monroe and Moroccan, 11, with ex-wife Mariah Carey; Golden Sagon, 6, Powerful Queen, 2, and Rise Messiah, 5 months, with model and former Miss Arizona USA Brittany Bell; Onyx Ice Cole, 5 months, with LaNisha Cole; twins, Zion Mixolydian and Zillion Heir, 1, and Beautiful Zeppelin Cannon, 3 months, with DJ Abby De La Rosa; Zen, who died due to brain cancer in December 2021, and Halo Marie, 2 months, with Alyssa Scott; and Legendary Love, 7 months, with model Bre Tiesi.

In 2021, Hart gifted Cannon a condom vending machine as part of their “prank wars” saga.

“Looks like somebody just sent me an early Valentine’s Day gift!! Vending Machine full of Magnums,” Cannon captioned a snap, posing beside the gift at the time.

In February, Cannon opened up about parenting in an interview with Entertainment Tonight.

When asked whether he was done having kids, he replied, "Yeah, yeah, yeah," before sharing that it's not up to him. 

"God decides when we’re done, but I believe I definitely got my hands full and I’m so focused. I’m locked in. But when I’m 85, you never know. I might," he said.
