My thoughts on this painting

I found it on twitter account called Tudor Extra, and they say it has been recently discovered by Dr Emma Cahill Marrón(on twitter as EmmaLCahill) in London.(link is at end of post)

Honestly in closeup it looks in really poor state.

On left are obviously Henry's parents and correctly identified so.

But i am not so sure about rest of figures being correctly identified. Or rather I am sure they aren't!

Yes, the figures lined in red are Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon.

But the orange I lined in orange is supposed to be Margaret Tudor. Henry VIII's sister. Fashion-wise it's possible.

Catherine's gable hood has both veils down, frontlets up. So at earliest it could be somewhere in 2nd half of 1510s, at latest late 1520s. The lack of ends of paste would point to c.1520(however if this was a copy...painters tend to not include them, or not give them justice...) So I am not 100% trusting it.

Margaret left England in 1517(read up on her life, if you want to know more), so in theory she could have been included here. But why is she by Catherine's side? Or rather behind that. Odd isn't it?

Such possition would much better fit Mary I. The sizes can be deceiving here...because in reality Catherine is supposed to be way smaller than Henry...

Hence this figure doesn't necessarily have to be a child(Mary I), but could be. And Mary was wearing same cap in Vyne chapel(where is commonly mistaken for her mother.)

(If there was Margaret, why wouldn't there also be Mary Rose? (Henry's other sister). ...Wouldn't that be even more odd than his daughter being included.)

But...I am really buffled by two figures entirely on right side.

Allegedly on left is Eleanor of Austria and on right her husband Manuel I of Portugal, whom she married in 1518:

...Nobody thinks it weird? ...Just me?

Well, in my opinion. They are misidentified. Both of them.

The man wears order of golden fleece-but that wasn't limited to just Habsburgs, plenty of foreign royalty were honourary members. Including Manuel of Portugal and Ferdinand II of Aragon.

One would be normally considering if the entire portrait is not done to commemorate Charles V visit to England...with figure beside him being widowed Germaine of Foix(who was there!).

But why would Henry's parents be included in such portrait?...Makes no sense!

Unless...we're looking at dynastic portrait!!!

...Where Henry's parents are on left, Henry, Catherine and their daughter Mary in middle, and Catherine's parents on right!

This could certainly be Ferdinand:

Ferdinand died in 1516, but Henry's parents were long dead too...

But...what about the woman? You cannot tell firmly the shape of gown and jewelry(mind could easily play tricks upon you.)

But why would Isabella wear french hood?

...And i considered that perhaps somebody confused portrait of Germaine of Foix or even real Eleanor and Joanna(netherlandish type of frenhc hood) with Isabella...

But then I noticed shape within the french hood's veil...

And it looks suspiciously like cofia de tranzado... the cap and 'braid', just where they are supposed to be.The headwear is overpainted!

Hence it could be based upon some portrait of Queen Isabella!

Unfortunately this is just card/print from Ancaster Collection, Grimstorpe castle labelled slightly wrong as family of Henry VII(instead of Henry VIII):

I hope we can all agree. It deserves way more love and attention.

This might be the first Tudor dynastic portrait!

...And if there is black and white card of it...is it drawing, engraving, printm or photograph? ...It could be out there...

PS: In it...Elizabeth of York is taller than Henry VII. Not that I'd trust the proportions entirely...but it'd be funny if true.

Is Donald Trump wishing he could replace Sen. JD Vance of Ohio with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as his running mate? That question jumped from the world of social media jokes to a serious inquiry on Monday, when the anti-vaccine conspiracy theorist and former presidential candidate told Tucker Carlson that he's been hired to "pick the people who will be running the government" if Trump gets elected in November. Since Kennedy dropped out of the race and endorsed Trump, the GOP candidate has fully embraced the black sheep of the famous Democratic clan. Trump used to sneer that Kennedy was a "Radical Left Democrat," which was false, and that he's the "dumbest member" of the Kennedy clan, which is fair enough. After Kennedy endorsed him, however, Trump hugged Kennedy and declared, "He's a great guy, respected by everybody." (Fact check: Kennedy isn't even respected by his family members, who are blanketing the airwaves to say his behavior is "obscene" and a betrayal of his father, a New York senator and presidential candidate who was assassinated in 1968.)

The imagery of the two men together spread far and wide, to the point where it seems that Kennedy is Trump's running mate — not Vance. 

Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign seems fine with this, since Kennedy's presence only proves the "weird" accusations the campaign has blasted onto the Trump ticket. "In the four days since he endorsed Trump, RFK Jr. has spent his time tweeting about chemtrails and dodging questions about illegally sawing off a dead whale's head," DNC senior adviser Mary Beth Cahill said in a statement. "Normal candidates would run from a surrogate like this, but desperate men do desperate things."

Trump has a stench of desperation to him, as Harris rises in the polls. Still, it's not initially clear what an alliance with Kennedy does for Trump. Although he and Vance keep insisting they're "normal" and "not weird," here they are, lavishing attention on a man who claimed to have a brain worm and by his own account once dumped a dead bear cub in Central Park. The choice is yet another indicator of how much the Trump campaign's strategy depends on appealing to fringe constituencies in hopes that they turn out just enough creeps and conspiracy theorists to eke out a win in the swing states.  Kennedy doesn't just connect with the anti-vaccine community. He likely has special appeal to a group that isn't mentioned as much in the mainstream media anymore, but whose bizarre ideas still hold power over millions: QAnon, a cult-like conspiracy community that believes Trump is a savior sent to stop an imaginary cabal of Satan-worshipping pedophiles. [...] A popular belief in QAnon circles is that John F. Kennedy Jr., who was Robert Kennedy's first cousin, did not actually die in a 1999 plane crash, but has been in hiding and will emerge as Trump's running mate. Many have decided that Vince Fusca, a random Trump follower, is the dead son of President John F. Kennedy.

[...] There's been a good deal of media discussion about Americans who voted for Joe Biden in 2020, but are leaning toward Trump now. Those numbers are relatively small but could be enough to make a difference in tight swing-state elections if Harris can't win them back. A lot of theories abound to explain this drift, from inflation to gender relations. What is under-discussed, however, is the role of conspiracy theories like QAnon. Most QAnoners are white conservatives, but in recent years, QAnon has sucked in a more diverse group of people. In her book, Cook tells the stories of Bay Area Bernie Sanders supporters, an elderly Democrat and a Black single mother who were pulled into MAGA after being radicalized by QAnon. PRRI data reflects this, showing that the number of Democrats espousing QAnon beliefs doubled after Trump left office, from 7% in 2021 to 14% in late 2023. Harris' rise in the polls, however, suggests she may be starting to get some of the drifters back.

The Book of Disappearance by Ibtisam Azem, translated by Sinan Antoon

now this is a book i have a lot to say on (and i technically finished it the morning i'm writing this but i remain committed to how I am dividing my reading logs). i'm reading it for my global novel class. it's a book by a Palestinian author with the premise of "What if, with no warning or explanation, every Palestinian within the borders of Israel and Palestine just disappeared?" It's largely about the reaction of the state of Israel and its citizens, told from the perspective of an Israeli journalist who is reading the personal diary of his Palestinian friend.

yknow how a lot of the time when an author is writing characters that they politically disagree with, they'll end up in the realm of caricature pretty quickly, either cartoonishly out of proportion or softened in a way that shows the writer doesn't actually understand them? this book avoids that entirely and Azem is just masterful at writing Zionist characters that are damning critiques of Zionism without falling into parody. i'm really looking forward to talking about this book in class tomorrow

If I am interpretting this post correctly, it implies that because of the monkey it is more likely to be Catherine of Aragon or somebody around her...because Catherine is depicted with a monkey.

Well, I don't know what consist of research in Dr Emma Cahill Marrón's dictionary, however here is what I know about monkeys as pets in those days. They were quite popular among wealthy in 15th and 16th century and there are some interesting stories about them.

For example Henry VII's pet monkey has destroyed a large amount of official documents! (and it is one of reasons why we have gaps in records from that time. No fire, nor flood or anything like that...a monkey.)

So I believe it is completely faulty theory, and I cannot believe one could have looked up monkeys as pets in those days and do even tiny bit of research into it...and still come to such odd conclusion, that ONLY somebody around Catherine had a monkey.

Or is it because it is marmoset monkey and according to wikipedia those are native to America? ...like is the logic that since she was princess from Iberian peninsula that she'd have some monopoly on goods from countries her relatives tried to conquer?

I don't see the logic behind this.

Sadly even proffesionals now can get away with claiming to do solid research and do very biased or unsufficient research. Or none at all!

The best/worst example I talk about all the time is 'scallops being evidence against Catherine of Aragon'...which was total bull...and yet professional institutions and experts still went with reidentification of that portrait despite such big nonsense being written in that article!

...So don't believe those people who just say my research says this...want full explanation, details, and then scrutinize those details to no end. (Hell scrutinize even my own work. Do you know how many times I found I made big typo in my past posts and nobody corrected me?!)

Also...if you come with theory certain depiction is not somebody...you better damn know your stuff and have solid, convincing evidence for it. And not just bit. Mountain of it. Especially if it is royal.

In this case monkey aside, what makes this woman believe the sitter has anything to do with Catherine or her circle?

Well, i of course know of some similiarity in the pendant to those worn by Catherine and later Mary...but not enough to say it is same, also there weren't that many jewelers royalty bought from-so actually one jeweller could supply half of European royals and they could have similiar jewelry due to that.

That gown is not English, nor Netherlandish, it most resembles French fashion.

We don't have many surviving depictions of scottish fashion in general(or they are not recognized as scottish fashion) from that time.

But French fashion is what I'd expect to see in Scottish court, given close ties between French and Scottish court. Scottish royal art collection also had many portraits of french royalty for same reason.

And if you wished to push theory it is not Margaret...then still this portrait was part of Scottish royal collection(it'd just be misidentified). So it could be another french or scottish royalty. Or both. You could theorize that it is one of James V's wives- Madelaine of Valois or Mary de Guise. (And fashion and dating would point to them.)

I'd say it seems like wishful thinking.
