🇺🇸 In Ecuador, people like María Román and Ernesto Londoño Toro have discovered in recent years that their family origins are tied to the Sephardim, Jews expelled from Spain in 1492. María, who lives in the Urdesa neighborhood, began her search for roots 13 years ago, driven by her growing admiration for Israel and Judaism, and discovered that her paternal ancestors were Sephardic Jews. Ernesto, on his part, felt a strong connection to symbols like the Star of David from a young age, and upon researching, he also found that his grandparents practiced Jewish customs. This phenomenon of reconnecting with Sephardic roots has spread to Guayaquil, where several Sephardic centers gather families searching for their origins. The anusim (or marranos) were those Jews forced to convert to Catholicism during the Inquisition. Over the centuries, many Sephardim arrived in the New World with Christopher Columbus in 1492, and while they hid their faith, they secretly maintained their traditions. Filmmaker Yaron Avitov, at the First Sephardic Jewish Festival in Guayaquil, emphasized the importance of discovering these roots, without the need to convert to Judaism, but simply recognizing their cultural legacy.

Fish and Chips’ Surprising Jewish History. Jamie Oliver confirmed it!
You may be surprised to learn that fish and chips, though wildly popular in England for what seems like eternity, was actually a specialty of the Portuguese Sephardic Jews who fled the Inquisition in the 16th century and found refuge in the British Isles. Celebrity Chef Jamie Oliver referred to this recently in an article in the New York Times, adding that, “Dishes evolve, impacted by trade, war, famine and a hundred other forces.”
Among those “other forces” are dishes born of religious ritual. For observant Jews, fish is pareve, a neutral food in kosher terms, thus an easy way to avoid treyf (non-kosher food) and possibly include dairy in the same meal. It was especially important for Marranos, the so-called crypto-Jews, who pretended to be Christian during the Inquisition. They ate fish on Fridays, when meat was forbidden by the Church, and also saved some to eat cold the next day at lunch, to avoid cooking on Shabbat.
Frying was natural for Jewish home cooks — think of latkes and sufganyiot — and as the Jewish community began to flourish in England, it spurred a taste for its beloved fried, battered fish throughout the country. According to Claudia Roden’s The Book of Jewish Food, Thomas Jefferson tried some on a trip to London and noted that he ate “fish in the Jewish fashion” during his visit. Alexis Soyer, a French cook who became a celebrated chef in Victorian England included a recipe for “Fried Fish, Jewish Fashion” in the first edition of his cookbook A Shilling Cookery for the People (1845). Soyer’s recipe notes that the “Jewish manner” includes using oil rather than meat fat (presumably lard), which made the dish taste better, though also made it more expensive.
There’s some dispute about the where and when of “chips” (what we Americans call French fries and the French call pommes frites). Many historians say that deep-fried, cut-up potatoes were invented in Belgium and, in fact, substituted for the fish during hard times. The first time the word “chips” was used was in Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities in 1859: “husky chips of potato, fried with some reluctant drops of oil.”
The official pairing of fish and chips didn’t happen until a few years later, though. Although there are some who dispute it, most authorities say that it is thanks to a Jewish cook, this time a young Ashkenazi immigrant named Joseph Malin, who opened the first British chippy, AKA fish and chip shop, in London in 1863. The shop was so successful it remained in business until the 1970s.
Who could foresee that fearful Jewish immigrants hiding their true religion and practicing in secret would be responsible for creating one of the most iconic dishes in the U.K.? The down-home dish that Winston Churchill claimed help the British defeat the Nazis, the comfort food that George Orwell said helped keep the masses happy and “averted revolution.” The dish, by the way, that was among the only foods never rationed during wartime because the British government believed that preserving access to it was a way of keeping up morale. A dish that continues to be a mainstay of the British diet.
Think about that the next time you find yourself feasting on this centuries-old — Jewish? British? — recipe.
These days, some restaurants are putting a new spin on fish and chips. Almond crusted. Baked instead of fried. Quinoa coated. Sweet potato fries instead of regular. And those are all fine; as Oliver says, “Dishes evolve.” But plain old fish and chips endures and probably always will. Good recipes usually do.

there used to be lots of these "made my mother/father/etc watch x anime and here are their reactions" posts and now i really understand why people were so excited to share
my mom was watching (uninvited) demon slayer with us last night, some of the early episodes with Zenitsu in all his crying glory and she was utterly delighted by how ridiculous he was being
but also as Inosuke appears destroying the house my mom laughs out loud and says, "THE SWINE...!!!"
#personal#it's indescribably cause she used 'MARRANO' in Spanish which is like. not the nicest word for pig lol#but she found them both so funny so at least there's that

Jacques Derrida was fascinated by the figure of the Marrano Jew, whose identity could barely be told even to themselves
🇺🇸 Jacques Derrida, a French philosopher born in Algeria in 1930, is known for his theory of deconstruction, which questions the notion of a fixed and essential identity. One of his obsessions was the concept of the secret, which he explored through the figure of the Marranos, a group of converted Jews in the Iberian Peninsula, primarily in Portugal and Spain. In 1391, after a violent pogrom in which thousands of Jews were killed, those who survived were forced to convert to Christianity, but many continued practicing their Jewish faith in secret, becoming what Derrida calls "Marranos" or "crypto-Jews". For Derrida, this phenomenon of concealing an identity connects with the fragility of human identity, which can be manipulated or transformed by external circumstances. The Marranos, who even forgot their own origins, maintained their secret and faith through complex hybrid rituals. Derrida saw in this concealment of identity something deeply revealing about the nature of self-identity and secrecy. In his personal life, Derrida experienced the fragility of identity when he lost his French citizenship and was labeled as Jewish during the German occupation of France, an event that led him to reflect on the importance of secrecy in human life. For Derrida, Marranism not only exemplifies the struggle for survival but also how the secret is central to our relationship with others and ourselves. At the end of his life, Derrida also embraced confession as a form of revelation, but at the same time emphasized the irreducibility of identity, suggesting that the truth can never be fully unveiled. Derrida passed away in October 2004, leaving his own life filled with secrets he never revealed.

. . cuando me preguntaste qué estábamos haciendo y no pude responderte . .
- —¿Dónde has estado?

più puzzolenti e più rari;
le parole
dopo un’eterna attesa
rinunziano alla speranza
di essere pronunziate
una volta per tutte
e poi morire

the fun game where I look for yiddn in 1899 for personal enjoyment
note that pretty much none of this will follow canon and I am doing it for my personal Jewish enjoyment. It’s a boat full of Europeans fleeing Europe in 1899 what can I even say
a) Olek - by far the most likely, considering the absolutely mass immigration of Jews from Galitzia (where the postcard Olek carries is addressed to) to New York, where he wants to move. Olek being a secret jew is something I’m 99% the writers didn’t intent but that lines up incredibly well with what’s suggested of his story, the actual history of 1899, and the consistent thematic resonance of people concealing or lying about their ethnic or national origin, including not only Ramiro but Ying Li, olek’s deepest parallel and love interest. (Seriously like… these two parallel each other so deeply in everything and the cantonese speaking prostitutes’ daughter pretending to be Japanese aboard the white western ship and the Eastern European Jew pretending to be a polish Christian aboard the western Christian ship are such a fascinating parallel in nation and region and power relational to the West, as well as a negotiation of the brutal anti-Chinese and anti-Jewish immigration sentiment in the U.S. at the time.) The scenario would place Olek as a polish and Yiddish speaking Jew who was attacked by an antisemitic coworker at the oil refinery where he worked or something, or who had survived a pogrom or displacement, and ended up stealing his attackers identity and postcard after he killed him in self defense. This would be a Ramiro and a ying li parallel, and show the repeated and clearly heavy postcard metaphor in a new light - this isn’t a hopeful golden lit coming to America metaphor, as it seems in the first couple scenes, but a physical realization of olek’s guilt at what he did to survive AND a heaviness that lurks around where he took the postcard from (the coworker on the oil field.)
verdict: both totally unwritten and completely contingent with what we know of canon. JEW
b) unlikely but funny as hell: Ramiro. Ángel thinks he has problems having to pretend to be straight and here we have Ramiriko struggling every fucking day with having to pretend to be STRAIGHT and SPANISH and also remember the order of the mass and not get the paternoster mixed up with shmah yisrael. Absolute comedy act. (He also seems consistently bewildered by Catholic canon or how to even do the priest act.) Adds fucked up flavour and nuance to whatever the fuck is going on with Ángel and Ramiro and the “you aren’t even Spanish” line, although does Ángel know Ramiro is a Jew? Probably not. Had he ever worked out he blows kosher dick? Story suggests Ángel doesn’t blow enough sick to really know, nor that that kind of thing would ever occur to him. This one is kind of unlikely, given there were very few Jews in Portugal in the 1800s and the portuense inquisition didn’t officially end till the 1820’s, but it is technically possible - Judaism began to be legal again in the 1800’s and Portuguese jewish communities began to form again. Furthermore, Ramiro being a jew, particularly a descendant of conversos or marranos, could be the context of the showdown where ángel says that he’s never pretended to be anything other than what he is (unlike Ramiro.) they’re both clealry so fruity that whatever he’s talking about isn’t sexuality. (Ramiro is symbolized by the cross, but the cross, along with he background outline of a church, also shows up as a significant element in his Trauma Room, so it might even be the identity he was forced to take on and then casts off). (The crucifix is also the symbol of the priest Ramiro killed it seems, although I think by drowning. A Jew killing a priest - who might have been ángels abuser - would launch such an incredible amount of antisemitic deicide let’s hunt the godkillers backlash they’d have to leave immediately) verdict: unlikely but not technically against canon. Both hysterically funny in light of being a catholic priest winging it for 8 episodes and absolutely heartbreaking
c) eyk. Oh boy. Unlike the other two nothing to suggest it but also nothing to not suggest it, right, although the concept of a German Jew whose family burned to death in a house he keeps seeing is. Oh boy. Assimilated yekke who turned to piloting as a way to work his way up in the world (and part of why his crew disrespects him.) His wife’s name is Sarah which could be pretty Jewish. Nína isn’t like, Jewish, but also isn’t NOT Jewish, and we don’t know the names of his other daughters, which could be like, Rochel and Shoshana. (Or not! Considering the assimilated yekke thing.) clearly lying about a million things. Is this one of them? Is he even real? verdict: the fire was his maybe-automaton wife knocking over the shabbes candles. Possible yid. Who even knows? Not eyk, for sure.
d) you could spare a thought for Daniel, who actually has a Hebrew name that directly parallels the figure of Daniel in the Hebrew Bible what with seeing visions and being trapped in the den and all that but he and his wife (maybe) buried his son with a cross and that cross keeps repeating with some of the most objectively Christian imagery in the show. Also they’ve buried their son beneath the cross. This could be playing the machine but unlike Ramiro it doesn’t seem so performative. verdict: goy
e) clémence
nothing to suggest it and nothing to not suggest it. Who even knows? Not us. Not clémence most of all
#1899 speculation#1899#1899 spoilers#1899 Olek#1899 Ramiro#1899 eyck#Tw Shoah#1899 Daniel#Please appreciate this! It took brain cells lol
