I didn't get to properly liveblog the first chunk of The Empty Grave, seeing as I read most of it on the beach, so now to catch up with my reread thoughts thus far:
This book still has the biggest banger of an opening page, from Want to hear a ghost story? That's good. I know a few. to My name is Lucy Joan Carlyle. I talk with the living and the dead, and it sometimes gets so I can't tell the difference anymore. YOOOOO!!
Lucy and Lockwood are so freaking funny flirting in the Fittes mausoleum. I can't believe I missed most of this vibe the first time around (too focused on plot, I suppose). Can you imagine how much the rest of the team must have wanted to murder them on a regular basis?
Aside from their banter and the gooey grins at every opportunity, I really do love the trust they demonstrate in each other, and how they're working through their issues. Like this bit, where Lucy accepts that Lockwood, as leader, is going to be the one to put himself in the greatest danger opening Marissa's coffin, but he also promises to stay safe for her and not take unnecessary risks:
Tumblr media
The skull is such a treat in this book, I love him. Enough said. (Not enough said, in fact. I WILL be saying this again.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Seriously! What the heck is this!!!!!! But, yeah, more combo flirting/trust. Lockwood is giving Lucy a chance to try her way, with a safety net - and then when her way doesn't work, he does intervene.... And then they get right back to the flirting. So freaking married.
Tumblr media
I've got a lot of thoughts about Lucy's musings about how much closer she and Lockwood have gotten and her concern that maybe it's due to what they shared on the Other Side, but I'm going to have to come back to that later, after I can coherently word what I'm thinking. We'll leave it at an acknowledgement that I'm pretty sure I was fondly beaming ear-to-ear at those paragraphs.
Unequivocally cried at the graveyard scene (you know the one) this morning. Doesn't matter that I've reread that bit a dozen times or more. I did very intentionally read straight through from the Tufnell/Charley Budd interaction to the walk to the cemetery, because I knew it was going to be more powerful together like that - that's when I put the book back in my beach bag, because I knew I wouldn't be able to explain my blubbering to my friend - and I was right, it does hit harder when you let the context build to a crescendo. True masterclass of the understated emotional gut-punch.
The skull being the definition of ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) when Lucy gets back from the graveyard? Hilarious emotional whiplash. Lucy is doing herself zero favors, of course, she could not be acting more suspicious if she tried.
Flo and George ❤️
George's sass to Sir Rupert when they're stopped for questioning is possibly his finest hour. Sometimes I see so clearly, it almost frightens me could be accompanied by the dramatic buildup in Turn Down for What like that iconic Pride & Prejudice edit, you know exactly what I'm saying. George is the unexpected ride-or-die bestie we all deserve.

Ok I'm back on my grind liveblogging the adventures of sad British children who roadtrip to various afterlives. L&Co ep 3, let's go.
While delayed I was pondering the whole Mind Landscape thing from the last episode and wondering if they'll use that to show the skull's face much earlier, although the fact that Lucy can't see him is part of how she willfully ignores that she's doing all that to a real human person. In the same vein she should beat up Marissa's old lady form in the psychic mindscape. *Georgie Crusoe voice* She's great at beating up old ladies. Anyway, onward. Time to meet the first CEO she kills.
Did they have that copy of Hamlet on hand or did George run to the library to do his dramatic research presentation. I say sitting like 2 feet from a copy of Hamlet from high school.
"Mandatory oversight." I'm still kind of amused that TV!DEPRAC actually does stuff instead of book!Barnes showing up on his off hours like "hey a bunch of the most powerful people in London want to murder you. My hands are tied. try to be less annoying. bye"
Fairfax didn't approach them directly in this version? He's covering his ass better
And he didn't prepay them either. How are they going to get his money after they kill him
They're drinking beers…. takes away from these kids going 'god what a fucking day. time to go have a hot chocolate' because they're 14.
Man when I was joking about Lucy having a thing for dead girls this was before I watched her TV counterpart sneak off to psychically commune with one while only wearing a towel. Get it, girl. It being frostbite.
Never mind she was just doing some light workplace theft. Never let it be said she steals mundane office supplies like paper clips.
I'm looking forward to seeing how they do Combe Carey hall because that was the only haunting in the books that I found genuinely suspenseful/frightening. Bring on the blood
We didn't even get the screaming? On the screaming staircase? Come on that whole scene was made for a scary tv adaptation. They should've given it more breathing room.
I'm not sure if book!Lockwood guessing that Fairfax wants to kill them but still taking the job without telling his team or show!Lockwood totally buying it is a worse leadership fuckup. At least by later books they're assuming out of the gate basically every adult who interacts with them wants them dead.
The goggles are nicely bulky to contain the pieces of dead children that they're presumably made of.
uhhhhhhh well that sure was a lot more dramatic. is that what ghost touch usually looks like
Orpheus gear spotted
Lucy spends the series signing various NDAs and then spills everything in her memoirs which is kind of why I think she waited until she died and then went I am hanging around just long enough to hang everyone's shit out to dry.
Eyeing Penelope's necklace given they switched what kind of jewelry Annie's was. Doesn't look old enough to be Ezekiel though. Also, her mother? Did they cut one generation out of the Fittes dynasty? Marissa stealing her own daughter's body is a bit kinder than stealing her granddaughter's body and then using that body to murder her daughter while the poor woman thinks her daughter is killing her.
The skull does have its lower jaw. Envisioning some poor Fittes employee dredging what's left of a dead kid out of the sewer, washing 100 years of gunk off it, and painstakingly wiring the pieces together only to present this rare find to their boss and it calls her a bitch until she throws it in the trash. There goes their promotion.
Hey what the fuck. Strongly worded post to follow

you thought it was over - trying to keep myself awake for a little while longer so i'm liveblogging the nye episode. and i think most people would agree, it's one of the best ones.
*not that fun fact* there were several years that i watched this episode every single new year's eve
ryan and marissa are actually really cute here. oh no the i love you ahh. i'm ryan tho. i have a hard time saying it at all and i've never said it romantically. "thank you" oof
this is such weird energy coming from haley toward ryan. girl put on some pants you fuckin weirdo. seth and haley have kind of sweet relationship tho
oh god here he is. oliver. ryan "who's oliver?" oh honey, you - know the rest
"the way you spend the new year is the way you spend the rest of the year" you know what, this has turned out to be very true for me. for the past 15 years on nye i go nowhere, do nothing, and see no one. and that's exactly what the rest of my life is like.
"seth cohen is so 2003." how accurate tbh

tgf 6x2 I decided I do not have energy for proper liveblogs it's all here
ELI calling someone a taint-lick, that tracks, the switch to streaming has freed him
liz blithely saying that all the people she's prosecuted she's been right to......that won't come back to bite her at all
carmen and richard oh my goodness I love carmen and her reacting to people is the dream
does he realize the circumstances under which carmen is making them all this money because. those people do not want to work for those guys.
this is such a stacked cast honestly the amount of with and and and special guest star going on in these credits is comical and they're all justified
randomly saying peter's back in jail 10/10 he deserves
look I love liz reddick with my whole heart she went all the way after his cookies
diane on drugs has never been very interesting
their total lack of awareness of what the protests are about or for........like is that normal??
one thing it's fair to say for the kings in this episode with alan cumming and charmaine bingwa is they cast people with a whole variety of accents but unfailingly excellent US ones (when the characters have US accents). can't think of a time there's been a person on this show with a bad one.

The O.C. season 4 is the best season because:
It's the first season where Seth doesn't cheat on Summer and they don’t break up.
Ryan is incredibly happy and opens up emotionally, and has a sense of humor and makes multiple jokes! He’s also more comfortable with being vulnerable and awkward around people. He actually talks to Sandy and Kirsten about his relationship issues a few times, which he never used to do before.
Taylor is made main cast and it turns out she's the funniest/most interesting character of everyone. Seriously she might be my favorite character of the whole show.
Sandy and Kirsten are finally without drama and in love like they were in season 1.
Seth has matured and is actually tolerable. He’s finally not selfish and self-centered and puts the needs of others before his own needs. Seth of earlier seasons was funny but he was a jackass, Seth of season 4 has earned a place as one of my favorite characters.
Summer finds her passion and cares about something that isn’t Seth for once, which does wonders for her depth as a character.
Ryan and Taylor start dating to my shock and delight - and they are the quirkiest, funniest, and most wholesome couple on this whole show. I would even call them the best couple of the show show... yes better than Seth and Summer (if Seth had cheated less on Summer in past seasons maybe he would have been able to keep that title).
Julie for once isn’t a gold-digging leech. She’s evolved to a human person. I’m very satisfied with her ending where she doesn’t jump to marriage and instead goes back to college to get a degree.
All-in-all this season was the best for all the characters and really made me proud of them. If I could change one thing it would be not killing Marissa. I read an interview that they did it because ratings were bad and they wanted to guarantee a season 4... which is not great. I would have loved to see Marissa have a plot similar to Summer and Julie where she finds her passion and focuses on that instead of boys. Perhaps ends up traveling the world? I think being on her father’s cruise would have been amazing for her. Honestly I feel the show would have had a more powerful impact if it showed that Ryan and Marissa weren’t meant for each other, and it’s not because she died, it’s because they were incompatible and that they were meant for other people. Like how Sandy was with Rebecca and Julie was with Jimmy before they finally found each other. It would’ve been poetic and brought things full circle. I’m just sad I never got to see Marissa evolve as a person like I did with Julie or Seth for example (two characters I loathed at first but loved by the end).
