Ayo shoutout to fairytale retellings that are written for actual preteens/young teens, here are some of my favorites;
Note note: These ones specifically are all appropriate for young audiences, say a hyperlexic little girl with ADHD who had The Hunger Games given to her in 3rd grade because her teacher couldn't keep up with her thirst for pages (just a nonspecific lil example :D) so if you're a parent or teacher reading this post I hope this helps!
Land of Stories by Chris Colfer- of course. What's not to love? I mean I lost a little steam in the last book (there's six) but heyyyy the first one can be read alone and then if you want more lore you can keep going if you wanna.
East by Edith Pattou- Ok fine, our main girl is giving a little bit of not-like-other-girls (Purple eyes? really?) but it's such a fun fucking reread, I feel like some of my superstitious things are validated when I do read it. East of the Sun and West of the Moon hasn't been retold to death so this is awesome.
Twice Upon a Time; Rapunzel, the One with All the Hair by Wendy Mass- Mouthful of a title but I STILL think back to this one all the time and laugh. It's short, it's cute, it's funny, they make the prince and Rapunzel into more normal kids, this one is a great light read. The other ones in the series are probably just as good.
Oh yeah forgot to mention these other books are THICK.
Just Ella by Margaret Peterson Haddix- I've been rereading this one since I was small and I still notice new things every time I read it. I'm so mad I marked up my copy because I have a gorgeous one from before they ruined the cover with modern art. If you look it up, I have the one where it's like half peeled back to show Ella as a peasant. Also a skinny book.
Ever After High's book series, mostly written by Shannon Hale- Did y'all know EAH had books when we were younger? Hale is one of my favorite authors, I ate these UP once I got my hands on all of them. Princess Academy was one of my favorites as a kid so finding these when I was like 11-12 was GREAT. They're long enough to keep me busy and super engaging. Ya gotta know- Briar's my favorite character in the books. Closely followed by Cedar.
Hale's Rapunzel's Revenge is SUPER good too. Graphic Novel. I'm a very huge Hale fan.
I can't think of any others right now but if I do I'll reblog and tack them on!

ROUND 1C, MATCH 7 OUT OF 8!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda Under the Cut:
Ella Brown:
Full to the brim with sass and spunk! Love that gal Ella has a typical Cinderella story-- go to the ball, leave the ball (sans one slipper), marry the prince, live happily ever after, but she doesn't get a happily ever after, because being a princess is really boring. She has maids, she has a bunch of rules to follow, has little to no freedom, and has to take lessons from a stuffy old man (at least, until said stuffy old man is... no longer available, and his son takes his place, and he becomes her only friend). When she eventually expresses a desire to leave, they all pretty much say "fuck that" and lock her in the dungeon until she gives up (her teacher (I think) even comes down and says that it's good for her, because now she's properly pale and skinny like a princess should be). They even send away her tutor/friend to start a camp for war refugees like he wanted to, to keep him out of the way. Instead of letting this all slide, though, Ella starts digging an escape route. After months of hard work, she finally escapes, and makes it all the way to her former tutor/friend's camp, and marries him, because there's been feelings simmering for a while now (I don’t think I did her justice, but it's been a long time since I read the book, and I only remember the major plot points)
Spinderella:
They are Cinderella Spiderman style. She chose to keep her powers after midnight so now she no longer has the ability to fall in love. 🥺

To my dear followers may I recommend a book series thats really good imo?
It’s called Haddix the Missing and it’s a sci-fi time travel series about this kid Jonah finding out that he’s not quite in the time he’s supposed to be in. He, along with his sister and best friend, go on quite an adventure to figure this out all while doing their best to save time. It is a series for kids and I first found it while in junior high but now I’m 18 going on 19 and it’s still one of my favorites.
It has good characters both protagonists and antagonists and some good humor, along with a hint of romance for some characters but it never makes it the main plot point which I love. And while it does start off a little slow it really gets good from the 3rd book onwards, I highly recommend checking it out if you need something new to read
(It does also have a small fandom and that’s mainly why I’m trying to get more people into it so it’s not just me and three other people lmao)
Edit: it also has quite a bit of found family along with some angst and comfort scenes which is also why it’s my favorite

LOSER'S BRACKET, ROUND 1B! MATCH 6 OUT OF 8!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
*Though I am referring to her as Popelka, her original name in Czech, she is also often referred to as Aschenbrödel, her German name. Additionally, Three Wishes for Cinderella is the English title (with an alternate localized title being Three Gifts for Cinderella). The original Czech title, Tři oříšky pro Popelku, and the German title Drei Haselnüsse für Aschenbrödel both are translated as Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella. All names and titles have been tagged. Any local Czech or German speakers feel free to correct me for any mistakes! :)
Loser's Bracket Propaganda Under the Cut:
Ella Brown:
She decides that maybe being a princess and getting married to the prince isn’t the best for her and leaves. Good for her.
Popelka:
Was eliminated way too early in the main tournament due to being pinned against a really popular character. She deserves to win the loser's bracket at least!
