A quality of Marco Inaros's that I wish they'd kept for the show is how, when he does interstellar transmissions, he puts on an Earther accent in the books. He doesn't do that in the show, sticking with a Belter accent throughout. Other Belters do code switch - Miller shows he can do it when he needs to be friendly to a Belter but conspicuously refuses to do so most of the time, as part of how he aligns with Earthers, Naomi does so very often. There are also Belters who don't - Prax, being well educated and working with Inners, has a fairly standard American accent, and Drummer speaks English haltingly and with a thick Belter accent because her English is much worse than Lang Belta - but I feel like having Marco be someone who does would have made him a bit more interesting.

That said, maybe it's just that if Keon Alexander drew any more attention I'd probably still be single and the showrunners were doing me a favor

Something I really didn't appreciate enough on my first watch is that Cyn is Naomi's dark mirror. Both Cyn and Naomi are the ideal prey for a narcissist like Marco; they are genuinely kind and empathetic and constantly giving to others. For a time, both were taken advantage of by Marco for his own ends.

But the difference between these two characters is that Cyn is much better at lying to himself and rationalizing his evil actions, and Naomi wasn't capable of the same after the Augustin Gemara. Naomi has the moral courage Cyn lacks, and he is who she would have needed to be had she stayed with Marco.

The airlock is a symbol of abandonment, of the necessity of leaving behind something precious to save Naomi's soul. Cyn and Naomi's relationship in season 5 circles around the airlock. Cyn had bore witness to Naomi's previous suicide attempt, and admits that he helped kidnap Philip in a desperate bid to get Naomi to stay, and has to live with the guilt of her disappearance and suffering. Naomi chooses to leave, and live with the guilt of abandoning her son.

When Marco declares his plan to trap the Chetzmoka, Naomi knows she must go to the airlock once more, and Cyn is again desperate to make her stay; so he tries to stop her in the airlock, putting himself on the line, pleading with her. Naomi has to kill her dark mirror in order to leave for the final time, to abandon her son once more as Philip looks on. It's symbolic that Naomi floats free, pushing off into space as Cyn's feet remain planted on the ground, rooted by moral cowardice.

Filip calling out Marco in front of everyone in Babylon's Ashes is such a good moment. It sucks how many people shit on Filip as a character. Yeah, he did some really, really bad things (or, at the very least, was extremely complicit in them), but he was still a CHILD who was manipulated from birth by a man he (almost literally) looked up to as a god. (Seriously - look closely at the language in Filip's early POV chapters when he talks about Marco. It's almost Old Testament.) He was given life-and-death responsibility that he lacked the maturity to really even comprehend at his age and was saddled with moral injury that lasted the rest of his life. Seriously, think about the dumb shit YOU said, did, and believed at fifteen, sixteen.

There's no way he didn't know the consequences of standing up to Marco like that, especially in front of other people. I don't really give a shit about the "were they redeemed/weren't they redeemed/can they be redeemed" conversation around fictional characters because redemption is a subjective moral judgment. All I'm saying is that took real courage. And walking away took real courage. And it takes real courage to find an open door when someone else has already shut so many of your doors for you before you even knew they were there.

Rosenfeld is clearly quite smart, and also possibly thinks Marco is an idiot (no Filip, I don't think that's what Rosenfeld hunching means) - so what is he doing there? 🤔 He can't just be Marco's loyal follower just for the sake of it

You have no idea who he is. You were only there when he was a baby who needed to be protected. I was there when he learned to walk. I was there when he first went out into vacuum. I was there for all the moments his mother should have been there. And I've felt guilty every day since.
