The Masque of Mandragora
I suffer from the curse that many asoiaf girlies suffer from; since I've been exposed to medieval fiction that does an excellent job portraying realism in court politics, now when I encounter stories that portray them unrealistically it takes me out of the suspension of disbelief
The actual plot of the serial was good. It lifted a good portion of its plot from Hamlet, but then used the scifi element to ensure it wasnt a straight copy. Hieronymus was a good villain and, while I do wish the Mandragora's motives were a bit clearer, it was quite a threatening enemy
This is also the first time that I felt there was queercoding in the series, which imo always makes a story better even if its certainly unintentional, with the prince Giuliano and his servent Marco. I know others might disagree with me, and there are definitely queer ships from earlier in the series, but personally I never felt the 3/Master or 2/Jamie relationships to be romantic in nature
But I could just not get past the many, many ways the writing got court politics wrong I was immediately taken aback by how bad it was! The scheming, power-hungry uncle and the noblehearted-if-naive heir is a common trope, largely because of Hamlet, but what it so often gets wrong is the way both of these people are required to interact with the larger scale court politics.
Claudius did not initially intend to kill Hamlet because if he had, everyone in court and in those outside their nation would immediately know (or at least suspect) that it was murder, which then leads to questioning the king's death. It's certainly easier to move the plot along quickly, and they tried to justify it by having Federico control the military (which makes even less sense because Giuliano is heir apparent??? He has the power to remove Federico from control of the military) but seeing such a blatant disregard for any sense of "lets at least try to cover it up" just made me want to slap these idiot politicians
And thats not even mentioning the complete lack of care put into the Italian nobility at the party. We're supposed to believe that both Federico and Giuliano gave the fucking Doge of Venice the cold shoulder, that multiple members of nobility were murdered at a party held in their castle, and there's going to be no political repercussions? Alright then
So on a personal level, I was definitely not a fan but if I try to remove myself from that I do think it was a well-told story. I'm not sure if it's just because I've been Classic Who pilled and haven't had a bad time with any serial since like, the Second Doctor or what but I'm able to enjoy even ones I dislike thankfully

Tumblr Dr. Who Poll vs Doctor Who Magazine Poll
It's been just over a month since the end of @adventure-showdown 's monumental survey of how Tumblr feels about individual Doctor Who adventures. Across ten rounds, we sorted the wheat from the chaff, the Quarks from the Rills, and the Cousins from the Looms. I wanted to compare the results of that huge bracket with the results from last year's Doctor Who Magazine poll, which ranked each Doctor's stories individually.
The methodologies for these two were quite different (though adventure-showdown did seed the bracket with a pre-poll that used the same methodology as DWM, but I'm looking at the final poll results for my data here), so comparing them is really interesting! I'm not a statistician, I just like making spreadsheets for fun. I think what can be seen from the trends and data below is a really unique picture of two somewhat overlapping but seriously demographically distinct fragments of the fandom.
Methodologies
Poll Methodologies
The DWM poll asked readers to rank as many televised Doctor Who stories as they liked from 1 to 10. The editors then took the resulting scores for each story and put them in a ranked list for each Doctor.
adventure-showdown began with a series of Google Forms with the same method as DWM, asking internet users to rank stories from 1 to 10. adventure-showdown lumped and split stories differently to DWM: The Key to Time was included as a distinct Four story to each of its individual parts, and each of the individual parts of Trial of a Time Lord and Flux were included alongside the overarching story. Utopia was also split from The Sound of Drums/The Last of the Time Lords.
adventure-showdown used the resulting rankings to create a series of Tumblr polls, moving from a group stage into a series of head-to-head matchups. They matched stories up roughly by obscurity (keeping advertisements and musical numbers separate from audio dramas and comics, which were separate from TV spin-offs, which were separate from the TV show itself), then Doctor or era. With each new round, the matchups were scrambled within melded groups, which ultimately led to a diverse distribution of all different eras and media under the umbrella of Doctor Who throughout the tournament.
My Methodology
In order to turn adventure-showdown's poll results into something that can be compared to DWM's, I created a spreadsheet tracking how each Doctor's stories were doing, separating them first into tiers according to which round they were eliminated in, then within those tiers by how many votes they had in the matchup where they were eliminated.
In the case of some particularly tough matchups, this means that the story that got the most points throughout the entire competition is not necessarily the highest-ranked story for that Doctor. For instance, The Happiness Patrol finished #3 of the Seventh Doctor's stories according to my reckoning of the Tumblr poll, being eliminated in the fifth round with 400 votes, less than the two stories above it (which were eliminated in rounds where they got 147 and 107 votes, respectively). The Happiness Patrol saw a vigorous campaign to increase its vote count, since it was up against Blink. The post for the matchup that eliminated it currently has 304 notes as of this writing. This is one of the fun quirks of this execrise.
General Trends
Where We Agree
The Ninth Doctor shows very stable story rankings between DWM and Tumblr.
On average, the difference in rankings for each episode of 9 is 5%, with only 2 out of 10 stories actually moving up or down the rankings at all. The Sixth Doctor is similar: only 3 of his 8 stories (included in the DWM poll, meaning not counting the individual parts of Trial) moved by more than 1 ranking. The Seventh Doctor only had 4 of his 12 stories move by more than 1 ranking.
On the flipside, Tumblr's opinions differ from DWM most regarding the First, Fifth, and Eleventh Doctors. The only stories that stayed relatively stable across both rankings for these Doctors are as follows.
For the First Doctor, only 4 out of 29 didn't shift by more than 1 ranking: #2 The Time Meddler, #5 The Tenth Planet (#6 in DWM), #18 The Keys of Marinus, and #20 The Reign of Terror (#19 in DWM) For the Fifth Doctor, we agreed only 3 times out of 20: #1 The Caves of Androzani, #2 The Five Doctors (#3 in DWM), and #17 Arc of Infinity (#16 in DWM) For Eleven, 5 of his 39 stories stayed relatively stable: #1 Vincent and the Doctor (#2 in DWM), #4 The Eleventh Hour (#3 in DWM), #9 Amy's Choice, #14 The Snowmen (#13 in DWM), and #39 The Doctor, the Widow, and the Wardrobe.
As you'll see further below, there is usually agreement between both polls about at least one episode that is in the top and bottom 3 or 4 for each Doctor, so these extremes represent the battle over ordering the ones generally ranked in the middle.
We Hate Daleks
As a general trend, Tumblr seems to think less of Dalek stories than the general DWM readership.
Out of 26 stories with Daleks as the primary antagonist, only 8 did not drop by more than 1 slot between the DWM poll and the Tumblr bracket (that is The Chase, Genesis of the Daleks, Remembrance of the Daleks, Dalek, Bad Wolf/The Parting of the Ways, Daleks in Manhattan/Evolution of the Daleks, The Magician's Apprentice/The Witch's Familiar, and Eve of the Daleks). DIM/Evolution actually ranked 3 slots higher on Tumblr than the magazine, while TMA/TWF and Eve finished significantly higher on Tumblr than in the magazine, cracking into the top 5 for their respective Doctors.
out of 18 cybermen, 5 stay 9 fall, 4 rise
We Love The Master
Meanwhile, out of 26 stories featuring the Master, either as the primary antagonist or as an important character, only two dropped by more than one place in the rankings (The End of Time and The Power of the Doctor), while the others either stayed put or increased their positions, some by quite a lot (e.g. The Time Monster (up 20 slots in the Third Doctor rankings), The Keeper of Traken (up 8 slots in the Fourth Doctor rankings), Planet of Fire (up 6 spots in the Fifth Doctor rankings), and The Magician's Apprentice/The Witch's Familiar (up 9 spots in the Twelfth Doctor rankings)).
We Have No Easily Observable Feelings About the Cybermen
Out of 18 Cyberman stories, 9 fell in the rankings between DWM and Tumblr, while 5 stayed within 1 rank of the DWM poll, and 4 rose. If I had to venture a hypothesis based on my unscientific qualitative analysis, it looks like Tumblr marked down most of the Classic Who Cyberman stories (only The Tenth Planet, The Invasion, and Attack staying within 1 rank of the DWM poll), while the only ones that rose in the ranks were New Who stories (Rise/The Age of Steel, Closing Time, Nightmare in Silver, and Dark Water/Death in Heaven-- though of course this last one is also a Master story, which we know we love).

...What about Eight?
Who said that? I thought you had all gone. You shouldn't scare me like that. Well, you see, the Eighth Doctor only has two televised appearances in which he features, and only one of those was included in the DWM poll. This post is about comparing the two polls. I can't really do anything...
Ah, alright.
Televised Appearances
We ranked The Night of the Doctor above the TV Movie. Night made it all the way to round 6, while the TV Movie was out in Round 2, losing with 266 votes to Jubilee, which then lost to Scherzo in the next round. Night lost to Bad Wolf/The Parting of the Ways, which had 344 votes to Night's 204.
Audios
Scherzo made it to the quarter-finals of the Tumblr poll! It lost out to Midnight 435 to 581, the first TV episode it encountered in adventure-showdown's very intricate media-segregating bracket.
Caerdroia made it to round 7, losing to Scherzo after it had beaten out Father's Day in round 6 (299-280) and the much-loved SJA episode The Curse of Clyde Langer in round 5.
The Natural History of Fear made it to round 6, finally losing out to Blink (253-352), and making it the top-scoring Eight audio to go out in this round.
The Chimes of Midnight also got to round 6, finally just losing to Remembrance of the Daleks (163-166); in the same round, Zagreus lost to Scherzo (131-210) just after it had beaten Genesis of the Daleks (132-103) in round 5.
The next highest-ranked Eight* audio is Solitaire (a Companion Chronicle, hence the asterisk), which was eliminated in round 5, losing to Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead (180-43).
It's worth noting here, that Doctor Who and the Pirates also made it to round 6, making it the highest-ranked non-Eighth Doctor audio. It lost to City of Death (170-78). The next-highest ranked audios are The Marian Conspiracy (lost in Round 5 to The Wedding of Sarah-Jane Smith), The Holy Terror (lost in Round 5 to The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances), and A Death in the Family (lost in Round 5 to The Natural History of Fear). Congratulations to Evelyn Smythe.
Novels
The EDA Alien Bodies managed to make it to round 6, finally being eliminated by Turn Left with 145 votes to 264. It had just beaten out Time Crash in the previous round. This makes it the highest-ranked Doctor Who novel overall, according to this Tumblr tournament.
The next-highest novel for the Eighth Doctor was Unnatural History, which was defeated in round 5 by The Chimes of Midnight.
Below that, there were five EDAs eliminated in round 4:
Interference (lost with 41 votes to Scherzo's 85)
Mad Dogs and Englishmen (lost with 38 votes to The Marian Conspiracy's 56)
The Adventuress of Henrietta Street (lost with 28 votes to A Death in the Family's 54)
Camera Obscura (lost with 27 votes to Lungbarrow's 47)
The Scarlet Empress (lost with 22 votes to The Chimes of Midnight's 102)
Comics
I hadn't actually been tracking any of this Eight stuff, so I'm having to squint through the backlog and this is already much too long. So you're only getting two: The Land of Happy Endings is the Eighth Doctor comic that made it the farthest in the Tumblr competition, being eliminated in round 3 by An Adventure in Space and Time (46 votes to 95). The Flood also made it to round 3, where it was eliminated by the Thirteenth Doctor comic Old Friends, gaining 39 votes against Old Friends' 47.

In “The Masque of Mandragora,” you can’t convince me otherwise that at the end, Giuliano doesn’t want the Doctor and Sarah to stay because he wants a foursome with them and Marco.
I mean, Giuliano and Marco are obviously together. Then he’s very quickly attracted to the Doctor and Sarah. He looks at them suggestively while around them. When they say goodbye, he looks disappointed and wistful, staring at them as they walk to the Tardis. He even gave them gifts, the salami to the Doctor and a white fancy sweater thing to Sarah.
Looks to me like he fell hard for them :P

the masque of mandragora is such an iconic and classic doctor who serial specifically because of that gay little italian duke giuliano and his massive crush on the doctor and his boyfriend marco who was TOTALLY jealous of said crush. absolute masterpiece. they deserve their own 14 series long big finish spin-off like jago and litefoot!!!!

All caps for my favorite for each Doctor and bold for my alltime fave; I've listed a smattering to give you glimpses of most of the companions and some vague non-spoilery comments since different stories appeal to different tastes.
First Doctor: The Daleks although slow-paced by today's standards set the show on its feet as the second serial and there's some extraordinary visuals for a 1963 show with no budget and almost no precedents to work from; The Aztecs has Babs being awesome some interesting perspective on white saviour syndrome trying to avert colonialism filmed when the last of the British Empire was still throwing out the Brits (also blink and you'll miss it gender discussion), THE ROMANS is a Funny Thing Happened on The Way To the Forum Meets Doctor Who, The Dalek Invasion of Earth was groundbreaking for the time (post-apocalyptic Earth was not yet a setting many mainstream audiences had seen outside of a few blockbuster films) a chewy story plus the first companion departure
Second Doctor: MIND ROBBER is just fun watch it, Enemy of the World with actual ( gasp) sharp acting all around partly because Troughton is the villain as well as the lead
Third Doctor: Spearhead from Space so you get at least one with Liz who is Great and the Brig in fine form, a lot of fans will rec Inferno for very good reason but be warned it drags in the middle, Terror of the Autons for a great Jo & Master story, The Daemons ditto plus one of the Brig's signature moments, no one ever remembers Carnival of Monsters because it's not important or epic and there's a lot of running about but it's a fun little D&D adventure like Ghost Monument, THE TIME MONSTER which is a bit naff but we love it to bits as The Gift That Keeps on Giving there's so many dumbass and funny and heartwarming moments in it
Fourth Doctor: MASQUE OF MANDRAGORA fun melodramatic costume drama with bonus gay couple don't talk to me I shipped Marco/Giuliano before I knew what gay WAS, Brain of Morbius has Sarah Jane and the Sisterhood of Karn and Four in fine form with bonus throwaway Hey That Totally Screwed Up Canon (What Canon?), The Deadly Assassin which established Gallifrey as we know it today and therefore pissed off fans tremendously, Face of Evil as an all around fun story introducing Leela Who Is Great I wish I could rec more of hers but i've already got too many of Four here; Horns of Nimon for a drinking game ep that's so bad it's hilarious (moreso if if you know the camp villain was considered for the role of the fourth doctor) but Romana is in a different story acting her socks off LIKE A BOSS, City of Death aka the Doctor and Romana's Paris honeymoon, Keeper of Traken because I just love it (preview of my favorite companion though she's only a side char) plus it kinda sets up spoilers spoilers still relevant in new Who
Fifth Doctor: Castrovalva is a fun regeneration story but find the Blu-Ray if you can where they were finally able to achieve the MC Escher effect intended, Black Orchid (I dunno why some people dislike this one it's Who meets Agatha Christie!), Kinda which is a little crack but there's some great acting and classic quotes even if my fave is out with a migraine, Mawdryn Undead for an interesting reunion with an old friend even if the writers once again can't juggle an ensemble cast, ENLIGHTENMENT is awesomesauce ok not as much now as then when the first cliffhanger literally pulled mom and me out of our seats but the story has aged well even if the FX now look quaint, Planet of the Shorts of Fire for some Master/Doctor shipping although they nearly had the Master say he was the Doctor's brother and cut the line mid-word!
Sixth Doctor: oh this poor guy didn't get enough good scripts until the audios showed just how fantastic he can be but The Two Doctors (which shows his era had gotten a bit grim for classic Who, but it's good), VENGEANCE ON VAROS which believe it or not predates the reality TV fad and I haven't seen it since the 80s but it was a damn good episode at the time
Seventh Doctor: Delta and the Bannermen is nutty and joyful and unique and a palate cleanser after Sixie's era got too dark and I will defend it to the death even if it's kind of insane, The Happiness Patrol for a strong Sylvester ep with Ace being great (these two are always great), BATTLEFIELD with the Brig (both of them!) and a girlfriend (we wished) for Ace and random Arthurian bullshit and Kate Stewart's mom and oh this was LOVE when it came out Doctor Who was BACK baby (poor Colin), Remembrance of the Daleks which should have been the 25th anniversary special and we all pretended it was and there is the most awesome cliffhanger ever (it's like the punchline to a joke 25 years in the making for fans) but really it's so good the guest chars in this story have a popular multi-season spinoff audio series; Survival as the very last story of classic Who with more Doctor/Master shipping which may have been deliberate and this time we know Ace's "girlfriend of the month" plotline was deliberate although it's coded and cloaked because the queer author had to slip it past the censors
Okay so I'm continuing to venture through Classic Doctor Who. I've watched chunks of Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker and adore the TV Movie. I've also seen a few of the "specials" like The Three Doctors and The Five Doctors. I know some episodes are considered much better than others 👀 What's your favourite or must watch episode??? Help me out

Unseen Adventures
What do the Doctor and his companions get up to when we’re not watching? All sorts of things---and here’s just a small, random selection.
The Doctor and Susan visited the planet Quinnis ‘in the Fourth Universe’ four or five journeys before The Edge of Destruction and nearly lost the TARDIS.
They also saw the metal seas of Venus. (Marco Polo)
Some time before An Unearthly Child, they encountered telepathic plants on the planet Esto. If you stood between the plants they made a screeching sound when they detected another mind. (The Sensorites)
They experienced a Zeppelin air raid during the First World War. (Planet of Giants)
The Doctor visited the planet Dido before the events of The Rescue.
He also visited Rome prior to The Romans and claimed to have taught the Mountain Mauler of Montana how to fight.
He’d had a previous encounter with the Celestial Toymaker. (The Celestial Toymaker)
He was present at the Relief of Mafeking in 1900. (The Daleks’ Master Plan).
The Doctor watched the ‘magnificent folly’ of the Charge of the Light Brigade. (The Evil of the Daleks)
Prior to the events of The Abominable Snowmen, the Doctor visited the Det-Sen monastery at various times---at least once in his second body---and commented that the lace always seemed to be in some kind of trouble. In 1630 he took the bell known as the Holy Ghanta into his care.
The Doctor once holidayed on Dulkis, finding it an extremely peaceful place. (The Dominators)
The Cyber Controller recognised the Doctor from a previous encounter on ‘Planet 14′. (The Invasion)
The Doctor compared a noise he heard during the Inferno drilling project to the sound of Krakatoa in 1883. (Inferno)
The Vandals were apparently ‘quite decent chaps’. (Invasion of the Dinosaurs)
The Doctor once crashed a Medusoid’s mind probe by insisting that he was on the way to meet a giant rabbit, a pink elephant and a purple horse with yellow spots. The machine didn’t believe him, even though he was telling the truth, as the unlikely trio of animals were delegates for the third Intergalactic Peace Conference. The Medusoids, a race of monopod, hairy jellyfish with claws and teeth, used up all their mind probes trying to get the truth. (Frontier in Space)
The Doctor was made a noble of Draconia after helping the 15th Draconian Emperor in the 21st century. (Frontier in Space)
A captain in Cleopatra’s bodyguard taught the Doctor how to fence. (The Masque of Mandragora)
Prior to the events of The Face of Evil, the Doctor tried to use his own brainwaves to repair the Mordee computer that became Xoanon.
The Doctor witnessed moving mines on Korlano Beta. (The Robots of Death)
He saw the Fifth World War and was with the Filipino army in the final advance on Reykjavik in the 51st century. (The Talons of Weng-Chiang, The Unquiet Dead)
The Doctor once angered the Droge of Gabrielides so much that a bounty of an entire star system was placed on his head. (The Sun Makers)
The Doctor has visited both Aberdeen and Blackpool. (Underworld)
He has seen opera singer Nellie Melba’s party piece. (The Power of Kroll)
The Doctor learnt how to walk over hot coals from firewalkers in Bali. (The Armageddon Factor)
The Doctor witnessed the Big Bang. (Destiny of the Daleks)
Tryst’s mentor, Professor Stein, was a friend of the Doctor’s. (Nightmare of Eden)
The Doctor told Seth that he’d been to the ‘charming’ planet Aneth, just not yet. (The Horns of Nimon)
The Fourth Doctor visited Tigella and met Zastor 50 years prior to the events of Meglos.
The Logopolitans offered to complete the TARDIS’s chameleon conversion on his previous visit to Logopolis. (Logopolis)
The Doctor once played for New South Wales cricket team, taking five wickets. He used to bowl a very good chinaman (a left-handed googly in case you were wondering). (Castrovalva, Four to Doomsday)
The Second Doctor once faced the terrible Zodin, a woman of rare guile and devilish cunning whose race was covered in hair and hopped like kangaroos. The Brigadier wasn’t involved. (The Five Doctors, Attack of the Cybermen).
The Doctor recognized Silurian battle bruisers and the Myrka and thought Icthar was dead. (Warriors of the Deep)
The Doctor had visited Androzani Minor previously. (The Caves of Androzani)
Azmael was the best teacher the Doctor ever had. His fourth incarnation got Azmael drunk at their last meeting. (The Twin Dilemma)

Tim Pigott-Smith 1946-2017
Latest from the news site: The actor Tim Pigott-Smith has died, aged 70. Born in Rugby, Warwickshire, he trained as an actor at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. Appearing in a number of Shakespearean stage productions and small television roles, his big break came with the role of Ronald Merrick in ITV's The Jewel in the Crown, which saw him win Best Actor in the BAFTA Awards for 1985. Other notable appearances included Chief Constable John Stafford in The Chief (1990-1993), a recurring role in ITV drama The Vice as Ken Stott's nemesis, DCI Frank Vickers, Bloody Sunday and two separate adaptations of North and South. His film career included the 2004 film Alexander, The Four Feathers, Gangs of New York, Johnny English, The Remains of the Day, V for Vendetta, and also in the James Bond film Quantum of Solace. However, his first speaking role on television was on Doctor Who, playing Captain Harker in the 1971 story The Claws of Axos: "I have my orders, Brigadier," he announced as he puts our heroes under arrest! He returned to the show in 1976, playing Duke Giuliano's friend Marco in The Masque of Mandragora. Speaking to Doctor Who Magazine about this role in Issue 187, he said: My son had just been born, and my contribution to his upbringing was the night-time feed so, in the studio, everyone had to keep waking me up! But I have fond memories of The Masque of Mandragora. Actually, I nearly got fired, I think, for laughing. We had one of those terrible jokes about Scarlatti, the torturer - every time he came towards us with the branding iron, with an "S" on the end, we just cracked up! Rodney (Bennett) got a bit upset about that. As well as his 1985 BAFTA, he also won the Directors' Week Award for Best Actor in 2002 for his role as Major General Ford in Bloody Sunday. He received an OBE in 2017. His agent said: It is with deep regret that I have to announce the sad news that Tim Pigott-Smith died this morning. Much-loved and admired by his peers, he will be remembered by many as a gentleman and a true friend. He will be much missed. We ask that you respect the privacy of his wife, the actress Pamela Miles, his son Tom and the family. The actor can currently be seen in BBC One's Decline and Fall.
