The first tendril of want shocks him like a splash of ice-cold water poured down his spine.

Bucky doesn’t know at first – doesn’t know what, doesn’t know how. But the want is there, curled up in his chest: small, and starving, like some trembling newborn thing whose first taste of life is hunger, crying to be fed and soothed.

There’s a half-remembered feeling in the back of his mind, something he reaches for when the want aches sharp and spark-bright inside him. The word for it is short and sweet in Bucky’s mouth, so gentle it barely touches his tongue at all, all throat and soft palate: ‘hug’.

It’s a simple concept. Two arms go around one body – that’s all it takes. One step, and there it is: a hug. And Bucky imagines it vividly: his own mismatched arms around Steve, and Steve’s arms folding around him, like a circle – the shape of the infinite, of timeless things like the two of them. A line that should end, but constantly finds one more beginning instead.

He tries to see it, Steve’s broad chest brushing against his as their bodies meet, the swell of Steve’s arms enveloping him, Steve’s big palms splayed wide against his back, touching him. Gentle. Like Steve’s eyes on him are gentle; like the clasp of his hand on Bucky’s shoulder is gentle, always. So gentle, perhaps, that Bucky would hardly even feel the hug around him.

But he would take it, gentle or no. Because the truth, where it lies in the empty pit of his stomach, is that he starves for it, day after day, the want pulsing inside him with every beat of his heart. He just doesn’t know how to ask for it.

So Steve does the asking for him.

His hair is ruffled, limned with copper and wisps of gold in the late afternoon light, and his hands are unsure, nervous. But his eyes. His eyes take Bucky in, searching, urgent – and for a moment, Bucky is sure that Steve, too, must have been starving for this.

“Can I hug you?” he says, and the word sounds especially sweet when it’s Steve pronouncing it. When there’s a ‘you’ attached to it, and that one syllable becomes two, joined seamlessly together, and the new word rolls smooth and honeyed down the curl of Steve’s tongue, hug you, hug you, hug you. “Would that be okay?”

Bucky wets his lips. ‘Yes,’ he means to say, but the word that slips out of his mouth in a rasp instead says, “Please.”

So Steve gathers him close, two arms and one body and his nose buried in Bucky’s dark mop of hair, and he carves a snug space out of himself to make room for Bucky right there, his hands fisted in the back of Bucky’s shirt, their chests pressed so tight together that his heartbeat pounds behind Bucky’s ribs.

It’s not a passing touch, the fluttering echo of a hug Bucky feared he might barely feel. It’s persistent. It’s desperate. It’s a hungry little thing, a creature to be fed tenderly, steadily, so it’ll grow and live, and live.

He wraps his own arms around Steve, and grasps at him just as fiercely as his want commands, a wet exhale shuddering out of his lips to land in the crook of Steve’s neck.

He was wrong, he realizes now, framed in Steve’s embrace like a timeless work of art. He was missing a step.

A hug is a simple concept: two arms go around one body, and they hold on.

Vauxhall motors

The global shortage of computer chips has had a significant impact on the car industry and is unlikely to improve before the end of the year, according to Vauxhall Motors.

Vauxhall's managing director, Paul Wilcox, told the BBC that the industry was facing a "problem" for the next two or three months.

However, he insisted there was no need for a major overhaul of supply chains.

The UK has suffered a shortage of semiconductors for the past year.

It was triggered by the Covid crisis. In the early stages of the pandemic, there were dramatic cuts in the car and commercial vehicle production. This was followed by a surge in output when the first wave of lockdowns came to an end.

But as car factories tried to ramp up their output, they found that the available supplies of semiconductors had already been snapped up by other industries, notably the consumer electronics sector, which was experiencing a boom in sales.

Modern vehicles can have hundreds of chips on board. They are used in engine controls, entertainment systems, safety mechanisms, instrument clusters, and so on, so the shortage has forced manufacturers around the world to curtail production.

Vauxhall Motors' managing director Paul Wilcox says carmakers rely heavily on "just-in-time" delivery systems

"If you look at the industry in the UK this month, commercial vehicle sales, which have been hugely buoyant this year - 59% up - this month they're 20% down, and obviously a large part of that is because of supply shortages."

He added that parent company Stellates' decision to invest £100m on building a new range of electric vans at Vauxhall's troubled plant in Ellesmere Port was "massively important" for the factory and its workforce.

Motor manufacturers rely heavily on so-called "just-in-time" delivery systems - which mean that parts are delivered to factories when they are needed, rather than being stockpiled.

This eliminates the need for expensive warehousing but means that if parts do not appear when they are required, factories can grind to a halt. But Mr Wilcox said he saw no need for a major overhaul of supply chains as a result of the current crisis business listings.

"I don't think it exposes a problem," he said. "I think it just illustrates that when you have a crisis, you can be quite vulnerable."

He added that the car industry is very much "based on lean manufacturing".

"I don't think that will change in the short to medium term - may be one thing we need to be careful of is maintaining more stability in terms of our contractual arrangements, but I don't see a fundamental shift in the way we manage the business," he said.

Mr Wilcox also applauded the recent decision by Vauxhall's parent company Stellates to build a new range of electric vans at the company's plant at Ellesmere Port in Cheshire.

The factory, which employs 1000 people, had been at risk of closure.

"It's obviously massively important," he said. "The investment of £100m obviously gives surety of jobs, gives stability in terms of the workforce and stability to the supply chain, which in that part of the UK is obviously very important."

But the move, he said, would also protect the long-term future of the plant, which will be building electric vehicles at a time when the industry as a whole is moving rapidly towards electrification free business listings.

Aaaalrighty. I am actively trying to get back to working on my wips but ngl until we know where the show will take the characters, I probably won't be working on anything non-established relationshipy.

This also means that I might have to scrap some (or most) of my wips by the time the season ends, starting with the jealous eddie fic. So I thought I might as well share some stuff from it before that'd happen.

He hooked the chart back to the end of the bed and walked over to the bedside table. “Thirsty?”

“I- yeah, thanks.”

Jason filled up a glass and passed it to Buck, sitting down on the edge of the bed.

“Not to sound like I’m glad you’ve been crushed by a collapsing floor — because believe me, I’m not.” He leveled Buck with a look that reminded him of Maddie before he continued. “But I am glad I finally got to see you. I was beginning to think that you’ve been ignoring my texts on purpose.”

Buck held his glass over his stomach and stared at it for a moment.

“I uh I kinda was.” He admitted quietly.

“Oh?” Jason asked in surprise and even though he didn’t seem upset, Buck still couldn’t help but flinch. “Did I- did I do something wrong?” He frowned, almost as if he was asking himself instead of Buck.

“N-no, no, not at all it’s just… did I? Do something wrong, I mean.”

“Buck…”

“Y-you uh you bolted pretty quickly after our date so I thought—”

Jason put a hand onto Buck’s thigh, just above his knee, and he snapped his mouth shut.

“It’s… nothing,” he shook his head, “I think it just seemed like you had your hands full with work and family and I didn’t want to make it worse. You know, before we could see where things were going with us.”

Maybe Eddie was right and he didn’t mess this up that badly, maybe it really was salvageable.

“Yeah?” He tipped his head up hopefully.

“Yeah.” Jason shifted his hand onto the top of Buck’s, bringing immediate warmth to his skin and he couldn’t help but lace their fingers together on top of the bedsheet.

He also couldn’t help but to instantly think about Eddie holding his hand through two layers of gloves while they both thought Buck was about to die. The way he desperately wished to feel Eddie’s touch one more time as he caressed Buck’s cheek and made him talk through bloodloss.

“So, are we on for another date?” Jason’s quiet voice teleported Buck right back to reality where Buck wasn’t dying and Eddie was no longer holding Buck’s hand.

“Yeah, s-sure I’d love that.”

Now that I'm on the verge of officially leaving (read: supposed to be graduating, highly likely to be failing) university, I feel it is only fair to share with you all some of the best (/s) accessibility moments that I have experienced over the last 3 years in this godforsaken place.

Let us begin:

Every. Single. Lift. Is. Different. There were at least 3 different "hold button to work" lifts in one building and two of them were consistently broken.

The main/most reliable one was broken for half a term and they didn't even so much as put up a sign to notify people.

Another takes you down half a flight of stairs. The door release buttons don't work. The up button doesn't work inside of it. The down button doesn't work to call it. More than once I had to get out and struggle up the stairs just to reach into the lift and control it from the outside. Absolute nightmare. This is the only accessible entrance to a certain classroom. Every other entrance is endless staircases.

Why are the lifts DIRECTLY at the top of the staircases and behind a set of heavy pull doors. This does not seem safe.

The library was made into a partially one-way system after the initial covid lockdowns. The front door was automatic. The exit door was not until about 2 months ago and had not 1 but two heavy pull doors that had to be opened. And it was broken for the longest time before that.

Someone tell me why to get to the "accessible" entrance of one of the classrooms I genuinely had to leave the building, go around to the other side and wait to be let back in in the rain because students can't access the door from the outside. Feel like this is one of those rare times I would have rejoiced at the "push to work" lifts. This is a computer suite.

One of my lectures was in an art lecture hall down two very steep staircases. The disabled entrance is outside (again), behind the exit staircase, and is not very clearly signposted at all.

Also on point 7, apparently (!!), the damn thing routinely gets stuck?? A passing lecturer had to open it for me then spent about 15 minutes on the phone to maintenance to report it AGAIN.

STOP PUTTING MASSIVE PROJECTORS IN THE ONLY WHEELCHAIR SPACE IN THE WHOLE ROOM. THEY ARE TWICE THE SIZE OF THE WHEELCHAIR AND IMPOSSIBLE TO MOVE.

They've been restoring one of the oldest buildings now for 2 years. Which is great- it's a gorgeous building- but the scaffolding cut off a lot of access, including the main, most wheelchair accessible doors, and the car park that can be used to be bypass the uneven pavements.

Bikes chained and left on ramps that VERY CLEARLY state not to leave or chain bikes there

The PCs that were specifically supposed to be given up for disabled people, and were kitted out for people with various disabilities, never had keyboards. Just a monitor, a mouse and a tower. People used to unplug the keyboards when they thought they weren't being used and put them in different PCs. God knows why.

Disabled bays are not reserved bays. They are not extra bays for security cars, or buses, or the grounds keeping truck. They are disabled bays, for disabled people. Use one of the other 150 spaces available on campus. Leave our 4 alone.

Also just making university students pay to park on campus is evil. What do you mean they can't even use the car parks until 5pm. Lectures start at 9am! Not everyone lives on campus!

Wide open cupboards in the narrowest of hallways.

One of the disabled bathrooms is behind an incredibly heavy rolling folding door that keeps falling off its tracks so it doesn't close properly.

Tiny triangular disabled bathroom on the opposite side of the building to the lift, despite the "regular" bathrooms being next to the lift. Had to partially fold my chair to get the door to close.

People congregating on the only ramps to leave the building, chattering away, then getting pissy with me when I ask them to move so I can actually leave. There are no loitering signs for a reason, people. Read them.

one of hiccup’s greatest comedic hits in otnwas is in chapter 27 where he briefly entertains the idea of baby tooth being competition (for jack’s attention) and immediately calls himself a loser for being jealous and proceeds to internally ask himself the question of ‘who was jack more likely to fall in love with’ and THEN quietly panics at the possibility of baby tooth having the ability to read ppl’s minds like . i was quite possibly in tears my guy is a trainwreck

Sparkstember Day 24: FFS (Things I Won't Get)

I have something terrible to confess, which is that at first I was not much of an FFS fan, at all. I actually actively DISLIKED most of what I've know from them at that point, which was what the Spotify algorithm seemed very content to throw at me whenever possible until it eventually forgot about it. Well, nothing wrong with that I guess, but I also want to think that most of my initial aversion to this project came from how I was still pretty, uh, close-minded in a sense when it comes to music at the time (and I'm saying all this as though FFS is even THAT much of a departure from Sparks, which it's really not? But maybe I just I saw it differently back then, which I guess is also fair).

But yeah anyway, I had a huge change of heart a couple months later, decided that all these songs are incredibly cool actually and I'm a huge fan now. This is a very solid collaboration and album and I'm so glad this happened. Like, it really is among my very favourite things from Sparks that I barely ever think about in such terms for some reason. Because I've noticed that I treat FFS more like a compliation than an album maybe? Cause yeah I'm pretty sure this is the only album where I have 30-40+ plays on several songs and only around 5 or so on a couple others. And I'm not super attached to the order of the tracklist either, and I'm mostly saying this because I've been a 100% albums over playlists type of person for the longest time. I will listen to the whole album start to end even if I don't like everything on it. It's like, well, if I like the whole thing enough to revisit it, then too bad, I'm sitting through it all until I can enjoy everything on it to at least some extent.

Overall, to me this album embodies that mid-2010s electro pop / indie rock energy that I love very deeply, in the sense that it feels appropriate to think, had I known about it back in the day, I feel like I would have LOVED it and it would have been my personal soundtrack of those early middle-school years of my life (or even earlier, I have this one note of me saying that "FFS is so primary school-core it hurts", so. While it didn't exist in the world yet at that time it still FEELS like that time, and I absolutely love it when music reminds me of a period in my life from around its release even if I was absolutely not aware of it yet at that point. It's like this source of free nostalgia that you didn't know would be attainable from this particular place.)

Also I will just say that it's ENTIRELY because of FFS that I eventually decided to give FF a go as well, and now I'd consider them one of my favourite bands, so, well, heck yeah to that!!

Favourite songs (and other highlights):

Johnny Delusional: oh yeah, I think it's important to note that it was especially THIS song that I found annoying as heck in the beginning. I thought it got very schematic and predictable at points (the long pause after the bridge especially I found to be so.... ahhhh come on, I could see this coming from a mile away!!) All of, which... well, maybe that was still a valid point in a way, but who cares since I love this song now, absolutely and completely and it's just soooo replayable. Every day is a good day to listen to Johnny Delusional a dozen of times

Call Girl: huge huge fan of the intro on this one and that whole wobbly synth sound it has

Dictator's Son: I really like that little guitar riff moment during the bridge

Police Encounters: notably the only FFS song among those early ones for me that I really liked from the start. And it's the ultimate jam, it's incredible how instantly happy and energized this song always makes me feel even after so many listens

Save Me From Myself

So Desu Ne: maybe the biggest offender (positively) when it comes to that "primary school-core" sound. Those cutesy synths are so important to me personally

The Man Without A Tan: realized quite regrettably late how much of a banger this is

Things I Won't Get: you know how it is with me and Russell's falsetto

Sometimes you hyperfixate so hard that you need a visual layout of the events in canon and how they overlap. First page is a general, looser timeline of the events spanning the Malevolent timeline as a whole; second page is 1934-specific.
