You all had been briefed at 0200. The flight to Berlin left at 0300 where the team would be infiltrating a terrorist hideout, a suspected manufacturing site for a new chemical agent. You were told that as long as you didn’t ingest it, you would be fine.
The fact that it had been made airborne was not in the fucking briefing.
The team had been split into pairs, you and he took the North side of the suspected warehouse. The size of it should have tipped you all off. Everything was running smoothly until 3 combatants had come from the door at the end of the corridor. He called for cover and ran ahead. You dropped two before he even got a stride in. The other he disarmed in seconds and then with a deafening crack, both men slammed through a door and into the resulting room. A brief struggle then silence. You heard him start to call the ok, his voice in the comm sounding clearer than earlier, then a noise, a pop, and the sound of air. You froze, watching a gas spill from the open door and dissipate immediately. Just when you started moving again, a growling, “Don’t,” tore through the comm. Then, the sound of ripping Velcro and something hard (his helmet you realized with a sickening drop) hitting the concrete floor echoed out to you. Soft murmurs that grew into angry outbursts of fuck fuck fuck transformed into one that became a groan of what sounded like complete and utter pain. You didn’t even have to think, the severity of the situation settled in. “It’s a gas,” you barked into the comms, “Northside hit, need medevac in 30, going dark.” You waited for confirmation, seconds after getting it and receiving news that the warehouse was almost cleared, you went to find him.
You knew what it did, you all did. Jokes had been made, smirks shared, but you all knew how bad it was. You weren’t even close to prepared. He was sitting against the far wall or rather pressed into it using it to keep his now shaking frame upright, gear strewn around the room, combatant on your immediate left with a mask (his mask, the masks you all were wearing just in fucking case) gripped in a dead hand, an empty canister mockingly sitting in the middle of the room.
You gripped the combatant by his legs and dragged him to the hall, before slamming the door shut upon reentry and grabbing a near chair to jam the door. You immediately began stripping yourself of your outer tactical gear until you both matched in only your boots, pants, and base shirts and then you turned your attention to him. Now kneeling by his side you took him in, looking for any other injuries noting nothing serious. That almost made you laugh with relief until you saw the front of his pants and him frantically palming the growing outline. You swallowed and quickly looked at his face shocked back to the reality of the current situation. The usually stoic, always larger than life, incredibly strong man in front of you was reduced to tears dripping from his now blown and hazy eyes, falling down flushed cheeks and landing on the front of his shirt that clung to his hyperventilating chest. You knew he had been shot, stabbed often, and left for dead a time or two, but this…
Shiny and new neurotoxin, you remembered the brief, attacks the nervous system, causing the mark to feel intense arousal and as if they have been lit on fire, specially formulated not only to cause pain but a complete and utter breakdown of will as victims often experience hallucinations and loss of self. If left in the system, it raises the core temperature until convulsions set in, and then heart attack occurs. Do not touch it.
No one had to ask how it was worked out of the system. Then again, they all believed they were too smart to touch the shit. Couldn’t do much about breathing it in when your mask was ripped from your face though.
Your hand pressed to his slick forehead now radiating heat, and feeling as if it could burn you like an open flame. At the touch of your blessedly cool hand, he hissed a low fuck through his gritted teeth, keening into your touch. You swallowed, hand tilting his cheek to look up at you when you asked, “Can I help?”  His hair was sticking up at all angles from the helmet being hastily pulled from his head, and he looked up at you and gave one weak nod, “Please.”
Upon looking at the desperation pooling in those dark eyes (those eyes you often were caught staring at) any small reservations evaporated from your body under his burning gaze. You swiftly reached out, mercifully helping him escape from the now too-tight pants, the bite of his zipper. The moment your skin brushed against the head of him he was bucking up against it. You had to reach the other hand out to steady yourself against his shoulder, another touch that jutted his hips and had him twitching into your grip.
“Is- is this helping?” you croaked out, struggling to swallow, struggling to contain the wave of arousal that was threatening to course through you. He nodded, chin slack against his chest as he watched your hand work against him, moving up and down against the veins seemingly trying to break through his skin. No thoughts went through his mind other than the knowledge that you were jerking him off and that it felt so good that he could cry in relief. But then something shuddered within him, something loud and fast like a wildfire, burning just as much, and hot thick ropes of cum spilled over your hand. He couldn’t even cry out, it happened so fast. His breath was coming out in loud pants, when a new thought, the thought that he had just come in maybe thirty seconds flashed through his mind but it was quickly replaced with the horrible realization that the feeling of being on fire wasn’t going away. It was getting worse, out of control, containment measures failed. At this, he let out a sob as his hips moved of their own volition into your still soothing grip. It wasn’t enough, he knew, you knew, it wasn’t enough.
You stood, and he whimpered at the loss of your touch but all sound stopped in his throat when he watched you decisively unzip your pants and pull them down to your ankles underwear included, kicking off a boot, and one pant leg. When you straddled his lap he desperately pulled you down onto him, your exposed core grinding down where he wanted you, where he fucking needed you, that’s when he began to talk. Begging you to help him, saying that he’s sorry over and over, that he needs your help, incoherent babbling from a breaking mind, please it hurts so bad, I-I don’t, I can’t- fuck, I need you... All cool, calm, collectedness burnt to fucking ash. Just a man reduced to pure longing and want. A longing and want that might be what was threatening to kill him, not the toxin, just the build up over the days, weeks, months he had been around you threatening to crush him. He almost wants to die, this was never how it was supposed to be. He wanted it to be good for you, you deserve that, you deserve better, he could have given you better-
But now what was he? A heaving chest under a sweat soaked shirt beneath eyes that watch you like some feral animal. Hands wanting to claw at the clothing now so heavy, hot, and itchy against his burning skin, but instead were gripping onto your hips like it’s going to save him from burning to a crisp. The broken moans tearing their way from his throat when you line up his painfully hard cock to your entrance makes you throb, and then his choking cry as you slide down on him punches the air from your chest.
“Does this feel ok?” you panted out after a moment, struggling, trying not to drown in the pleasure of him stretching you, filling you. He couldn’t form the words, couldn’t even nod. His forehead falling to your shoulder in utter relief, mouth dropped open as he repeats your name over and over like an apology, a thanks, a goddamned prayer. How all he can do is sit there on the floor of some warehouse, back against a wall, the only thing resembling his usual strength is that ironclad hold he has on your hips as he helps you drag yourself up, then, accompanied by the tortuously obscene sounds of your wetness, back down. Brokenly pleading with you not to stop, don’t stop, fuck p-please don’t stop. You feel like molten heaven against his cock, your moans like angels (or devils, he’s too far gone to care at this point) singing through the blood rushing in his ears. One of your hands again steadies yourself on his shoulder, the other steadying him, an anchor point, with your achingly gentle hold on the nape of his damp neck (so gentle that it breaks his fucking heart, he wanted to give you more, you deserved more) as you ride him. Your hips rock once more, twice more, before his body seizes up with electricity that ricochets up his spinal cord and reverberates through his skull. His fingers dig into the soft skin of your hips, teeth grinding and eyes slamming shut, as he releases inside of you with a shattered cry. The sound of you gasping, now clutching, raking your fingers into him, has his hips continuing their rutting up into you, pushing his cum as deep as he can within your walls.
He stills for 10 seconds at most, panting breaths thunderous between you two, before pulling you into his chest, his hips slamming up into you, hard and hot as if he didn’t just fuck you until he could see every neuron firing behind his eyes. His hot open mouth finds your shocked one in a perfectly surprised “o,” more apologies pushing from his lungs and into yours between loud wet kisses as he listens (is blessed with thank you God) to you beginning to come apart. You couldn’t help it, as you ground down into his thrusts, even though you knew the threatening climax was going to be terrifying. Your breathing was ragged now as well, the air becoming harder and harder to drag into your lungs in between you cursing and moaning, and then- fucking hell- you’re at the precipice. Before you can even utter a syllable you are being flung over the edge. The pleasure rips through you, waves breaking against the rocky shore, with such intensity that it hurts, causing you to dig your nails into his skin, and bright spots to dance behind your closed eyes while the distant feeling of wetness registers from between you two. He explodes again with a gasp, feels you clench around him like a vice, his name, his real name, forcing its way from inside you and into his mouth with every pulse and it tastes so so good that he can’t stop, he never wants to stop, just filling you up until it drips from you, filling you with him because you’re his, his. Even when you both whimper and shudder with overstimulation, his arms shaking in their grip around you, he can only press his forehead to yours, rolling it desperately, as he begs for your forgiveness. I can’t stop, it won’t stop, I’ll make it good, please next time I’ll make it good.
“It is good,” you whisper to him with hitched breath from each thrust, trying to reassure him, “It’s ok, it’s ok.” You don’t know if he can hear you, his eyes are wild and don’t seem to even register that you are actually on top of him, that he’s inside of you, that he has made you yell out his name over and over and over. You don’t think he even knows what he is saying. Next time.
His own voice comes to him from somewhere far away, through the flames licking at his mind, please- fuckin’ hell please, just a little more- I just need one more, I need you, please don’t stop, I don’t want to stop nearly unrecognizable as he comes inside you again and again and again.
It isn’t until the medevac came and he was sedated that what just happened began to sink in. For a week, a fucking week, he’s in critical condition. No one talks about it, at least not in the way you all did before this. You saved him, you’re told. You don’t want to think about it, if you think about it then you think about how good it felt, how fucked it is that it felt good, and how everything is gone. If you think about all he said, you’d overthink, give meaning where there was none. He probably won’t be able to look at you anymore. You went to see him that first day. You sat next to him for mere minutes before bolting, the fear of him waking up and looking at you with disgust, telling you to get out in that icy voice you knew so well, sent you running straight to the mats to train until you wanted to scream. That’s all you did now, and that was where you decided you would stay until you died. That is until someone came and found you, told you he was awake, and that he had asked for you. The whole walk to the infirmary had adrenaline coursing through you, you wanted to run, to fight, to freeze right there in the hall and never move another fucking muscle. The thought of losing him, him being there but not wanting to be near you anymore made you feel sick. It had been so long, so long of repressing those feelings that flared in your chest when he smiled at you during sparring, the feeling of him seated next to you on a flight, his eyes catching yours just so you could stay with him. Well, you thought with dripping ire, that had literally and figuratively been fucked now hadn’t it?
You knocked, heard his gruff voice, and entered. You stopped dead in your tracks three steps into the room after mistakenly looking up and finding him staring at you from where he sat on the edge of the bed, already dressed, looking like he was about to head out on another call. You were desperately trying not to shake but your hands gave you away. You could take on a man twice your size without batting an eye but this?- you were terrified.
The moment you walked into the room, all his time that morning when he first woke thinking about what he would say to you, how he could face you, was knocked from his mind. You had saved his life. He never wanted that. He wanted to give it to you, it was yours after all. He didn’t know when it had become yours, every single part of him, but if he had to wager a guess it was the moment he found you in his life. And it might all be ruined.
The memories had started coming to him immediately after waking up, almost more clear and real now than in the moment.  It jolted him awake so hard that the attending ran into the room for fear that his hammering heart had in fact given out. Once his breathing had calmed a little, he tried to sift through the fog. His recall of the smell of you, the arousal dripping from between your legs, mixed with your sweat and the familiar scent of your grapefruit and ginger shampoo, nearly pulled a groan from his chest. The soft touch of your hands, cool and strong against the fire that spread through his blood, had brought him back. The feeling of you breaking, the soft whines, the way you said his name… the things he had said, he couldn’t just shut the fuck up could he?
He had to bring his hands up to cover his eyes, willing the images to go away, just for a moment, please, he just needed some time, if only he had time- next time. Next time, he had told you. A desperate promise, a reassurance, trying to tell you that it wasn’t just the chemical coursing through him, it wasn’t just his hijacked nervous system. Did she know? Did she understand? That’s when he asked for you, without thinking, just wanting to see you, to explain. He had never been good with words unless it was biting sarcasm across comms or coolly delivering ultimatums in an interrogation. Then he remembered, the thing that sent his heart barreling through his chest for the second time, the machine next to him screaming. It is good, you had said, it’s ok, it’s ok, you had whispered.
He ripped the monitors off his chest, ignoring the doctor's protestations, found the clothes that had been brought in for him and got dressed. Now that you were standing here before him he was unsure. You looked scared, and he could count on one hand all the times he had seen you in such a state.
His staring was unnerving, more unnerving than if he had shouted, yelled, grabbed you, anything but this, this was fucking torture. You had to leave, just get off base, go somewhere, anywhere but here- the sudden sound of your name shook you from the reverie. The tone had your eyes finding his immediately.
He stayed seated, scared that if he stood, if he made his way to you, you would run, and you both knew that you were much quicker than him. If you ran, if you left, he would never catch up.  Only when his knuckles began to ache did he realize how tightly he was gripping the edge of the mattress in an effort to keep himself there. It was hard to look at you and not remember the way you had looked when you pressed your hand to his forehead, when you had thrown your head back in pleasure, when you had grabbed his face when he was too exhausted to continue but thankfully no longer felt like he was burning alive. It was hard to remember and not stride across the room and hold you. He took a breath and forced his shoulders to relax in a way that he had done so many times before.
“I-,” he started, his voice cutting through the room, his normal voice, the one you recognized as him and it set you slightly at ease from sheer familiarity, “I’m so sorry.” Now he had to turn his eyes downcast.
“What?” Your response, the shock in your voice, forced him to look at you again. Your hands itched at your sides, confusion rippling across your face.
His eyes narrowed, he knew you so well. Always blaming yourself. “I’m sorry,” he repeated, “I’m sorry that happened, I’m sorry you were put in that position,” the word choice made him nearly cringe. He continued, “I never-I didn’t want it to happen that way.”
Your brain jolted, standing there in shocked silence, his words thundering through your ears accompanied by the pleading of next time.
He pressed on, desperately trying, “I know you, you’re going to think this was your fault. It wasn’t. There was nothing either of us could do, thank you for your, uh, help. Just- fuck, please just say some-,”
Shock still swept through you, the words escaped your mouth before you could think, “Did you mean it?” You figured by the way he leaned back that he knew what you were talking about. Then he held out a hand, palm up, an offering. Before you knew it, you had crossed the room, putting your hand in his and letting it gently pull you between his legs. His giant frame meant even sitting on the gurney that his gaze was level with yours, and those eyes searched your own when one word sounded through the room.
“Yes.”
This word broke you. One fucking word, one word that answered every glance between you two, every smile shared, a word you brokenly whispered into the night when you had a hand between your legs thinking about him knowing you shouldn’t. You hadn’t cried all week, but now the giant tears rolling down your cheeks felt like a release. When his free hand, warm and rough, swiped them away you couldn’t help leaning into it, just as he had done. All tension, all fear, dissipated from the room. That hand continued to just below your ear, cupping your neck, and gently pulling you forward to press his head against yours, eyes shutting, just resting there against each other in the moment.
“What the fuck are we gonna do?” you sighed.
You could feel the smirk that you knew was slipping across his mouth.
“Well, I did say next time.”
This time when you rode him with the small bed creaking beneath the movements, he stopped you any time you tried to speed up (it was your turn to beg and plead), keeping you at a languid torturous pace. That way the bastard had all the time in the world to whisper into your mouth, letting you taste each word, all the things he would do to you next time and all the times after that.
Thank you so much for reading, please let me know what you think! :)

Writing Reference: Fragrance Notes
Tumblr media
CITRUS NOTES
In their natural state, are quite volatile and prone to oxidation.
Notes of lemon, bergamot, orange, and mandarin are used in perfumery to impart sharp, sour, and very refreshing top notes to a fragrance.
MINTY NOTES
Follow on from citrus notes as refreshing and clean-smelling top notes used extensively in functional perfumery like household cleaning products.
In addition, notes of peppermint, menthol, and eucalyptus give a cooling effect to many masculine fine fragrances and shower gels.
FRUITY NOTES
With the exception of Osmanthus and blackcurrant bud absolute, the majority of fruity notes used in perfumery are created with synthetic materials.
Gamma undecalactone (C14) - used for a peachy/apricot effect, along with other materials such as Raspberry Ketone, Benzaldehyde (for cherry), and Allyl amyl glycolate (for a sour pineapple note).
The large aromachemical manufacturers produce ready-made compounds, which makes adding fruity notes to a fragrance composition less of a challenge.
Dewfruit, which is a specialty base from the Swiss fragrance manufacturer Givaudan, gives a raspberry and lychee note and is used in a variety of commercial fine fragrances.
GREEN NOTES
Add freshness and naturalness to fragrances, from floral to fruity and chypre.
Cis-3-hexenol - a very powerful material that is reminiscent of freshly cut grass.
Galbanum - a natural material, likened to uncooked green beans.
Should be used sparingly because they can seem harsh if used in large quantities.
HERBAL NOTES
Lavender, rosemary, and clary sage are used in both masculine fragrances and functional products for their cooling and natural effect.
Herbs add naturalness to a fragrance and are usually the steam distillate of the aerial parts of the plant.
Lavender - a key component of the fougére family, with each variety and extraction giving a slightly different effect.
Lavender absolute is said to have a bright green color and warm, hay-like aroma.
ALDEHYDIC NOTES
Aldehydes - a group of materials that are most famous for their use at overdosed levels in Chanel No. 5.
Have a powerful aroma and are perceived as waxy, fatty, soapy, and clean.
On their own, they would be considered too harsh and chemical-ly, but in combination with floral notes of rose, jasmine, and ylang ylang, they impart sparkle and radiance.
C8 Octanol, C10 Decanal, C11 Undecylenic, C12 MNA, and C12 Lauric feature in this group, as do Hydroxycitronellal, Citral, Citronellal, and Benzaldehyde.
FLORAL NOTES
Floral notes make up the heart of most fragrance types.
There are many different types of floral, each with their own characteristics:
Rose Notes. These can include everything from rose absolute and rose otto to geranium and even guaiacwood which, although smoky and woody, has definite rosy undertones. Phenethyl alcohol is used as a blender in fragrances to give a rose note, and the Firmenich base Dorinia is used where a large amount of natural rose would be too costly or restricted. Apart from cost, one of the main issues with using natural rose absolute in a commercial fragrance is that it typically contains 1-1.5% Methyl eugenol, a naturally occurring component that is restricted in the EU and other parts of the world. The maximum amount of rose allowed in a leave-on skincare product is around 0.025%. Low Methyl-eugenol rose is available, but cost and minimal-order quantities are high, meaning it is out of the reach of many fragrance producers. Laboratoire Monique Rémy produce a molecular distillation of rose for this very reason, which enables large quantities to be used in the fragrance Portrait of a Lady (Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle).
Jasmine Notes. As well as jasmine absolute and jasmine sambac, synthetic bases are created with Benzyl acetate and other jasmine-like chemicals such as Hedione, which is used in a huge range of fragrances to impart radiance and diffusion. Unfortunately, although used for centuries, jasmine has been severely restricted in commercial fragrances, due to sensitization, and it is only allowed currently in the EU at a maximum of 0.7% in a finished fragrance for on-skin usage.
Muguet Notes. The name of the lily-of-the-valley notes. There is no natural muguet extract, so all fragrances of this type will contain some synthetic materials. The muguet ingredient, Hydroxycitronellal, which was relied upon for many years, is now restricted to a maximum 5%, due to its potentially sensitizing effect. Other muguet-type replacements are Lyral, Lilial, and Dupical, which are used in combination with other materials.
Violet and Iris Notes. Natural violet absolute is from the leaf, and smells very green, wet, and mulchy. The sweet, powdery violet notes actually come from a group of materials called the ionones—Alpha, Beta, and Methyl ionones—which add a sweet, cosmetic violet note to rosy florals, as well as being a great link to woody notes in the base of a fragrance. Other notes that belong in this category are the orris notes, which are either natural and excruciatingly expensive (orris concrete), or come from a synthetic such Orivone.
Narcotic Floral Notes. Naturals such as ylang ylang, tuberose, and orange blossom are in this category due to their heavy, sweet, almost narcotic effect in a fragrance. With the exception of perhaps ylang ylang, which is available in a variety of grades, these materials offer a low yield and so are quite costly. In commercial fragrances, synthetic materials such as Aurantiol and Methyl anthranilate are used instead. White florals contain traces of the chemical indole, which can be added to a fragrance in trace amounts for effect. Alone, indole has an odor of decay and can be extremely unpleasant, as is the case with many animalic notes.
ANIMALIC NOTES
Indole brings us nicely on to the other animalic and musk notes used in fragrance.
Included here are the leather notes, as there is a fair amount of crossover.
The animalic notes are generally quite strong and often fecal.
The following are main animalic notes used:
Civet. This is the main material used and is extracted from the anal gland of the civet cat. Strange and unpleasant as it may seem, civet, when used in trace amounts, is said to give a sweet, exotic, and sexy edge to a fragrance and is reminiscent of the indoles present in white flowers.
Castoreum. Comes from the glands of the beaver or a synthetic reproduction, which is slightly less alarming. It can have quite urine-like notes, which at low levels give a honey aroma. It is used in chypre and leather fragrances, along with woods, mosses, and labdanum or birch tar and Isobutyl quinoline (leather notes).
Ambergris. Comes from the sperm whale; the most gentle of the animalic notes. Often found washed up on beaches, mainly in New Zealand. It has an aromatic, almost marine-like note that can be soft, musty, and musky. The synthetic versions are most often used. It works well with sandalwood for a soft skin-like accord.
Natural musk. Use of this is now completely outlawed due to the near-extinction of the musk deer from which it was historically collected. The musk notes we experience today are all synthetic and, in fact, are perceived as much cleaner than you would expect considering their origin. This is due to their extensive use in laundry detergent fragrances, hence the term “laundry musk.” Nitro musks such as Galaxolide by IFF are used due to their substantive and long-lasting effects through a wash at high temperatures. They are not very soluble in water, which means that they will stay on the fabric through the wash cycle. Of course, this means that many are not biodegradeable or very environmentally friendly. Musk notes are used in most fragrances for their fixative properties and for the soft, comforting effect they give to a fragrance. Many people, including perfumers, are anosmic to different musks and so they are often used in combination with each other.
BALSAMIC AND VANILLA NOTES
Balsamic refers to the sweet, warm, and resinous notes of Peru balsam, benzoin, and oppoponax, which also have slightly vanilla and caramel undertones.
Vanilla absolute does not smell anything like the vanilla notes used in food or commercial bath products, which are more “ice-cream-like” and foodie.
These are usually created with Ethyl vanillin and vanillin, rather than the more costly vanilla absolute, which is actually less sweet and more woody. Vanilla absolute is difficult to work with in products due to its insolubility in alcohol.
It can also cause extreme discoloration in some products, turning lotions and soaps a dark brown to black.
HAY NOTES
Another sweet, powdery note is coumarin, which is a key component of the fougére family and works well with both vanilla and lavender.
Coumarin - a white, crystalline powder that occurs naturally in tonka beans.
It is created synthetically for perfumery use, but tonka absolute has a similar smell, which is that of powdery, newly mown hay.
WOODY NOTES
A key part of oriental fragrances, the woody notes can be soft and creamy, such as sandalwood, or cool and earthy, such as patchouli and vetiver.
Although patchouli is a distillation of the leaves rather than a wood, it does have some woody aspects.
Vetiver - rooty and has rich caramel undertones, and an earthy woodiness.
Cedarwood Virginian has a sharp, dry, pencil-shavings aroma.
Iso E Super is a lovely, transparent, woody ingredient to add to a fragrance as a blender and is even used alone as a fragrance in its own right.
MOSSY AND MARINE NOTES
Have a slightly yeasty, fungal, and pungent aroma.
Mossy notes - important in both the chypre and fougére fragrance families and, although oakmoss is being restricted, there are synthetic variants that will give similar effects.
Seaweed absolute - can be used for a natural marine note but the most widely used in fine fragrance is Calone, which was prolific in perfumes of the 1990s.
Calone - has a sweet, melon, ozone-like fragrance, which many people find extremely cloying. This is often used with other fruity, melon, and marine notes.
SPICY NOTES
Spice notes play a huge part in perfumery as accessory notes for floral and oriental fragrances.
Spices can be overpowering, and notes such as cumin can take on a slightly sweaty odor that may smell unpleasant on skin.
There are warm spices such as clove (or Eugenol), which can give a carnation effect to florals, and cooler, dry-spice notes like black pepper.
Shinus molle, or pink pepper, has been used extensively over the last few years in floral fragrances.
Cinnamon, nutmeg, and coriander can also be used, as can other foodie spices like cardamom in the form of distilled essential oils.

Tristin Dugray lore hcs
wc: 1k
warnings: mentions of broken/dysfunctional families, tristin's siblings both have drug problems, mentions of sexism and abortion (v briefly), mentions of cheating (also v briefly), tristin is not super close with his siblings, brief mention of DUIs (not tristin), I think that's it??
summary: lore on Tristin's family whipped up in my little plastic play kitchen by yours truly lol
a/n: I MISS HIM!!!! I SAW SOME GIFS THAT MADE ME SALIVATE!!!!! also!! in case it wasn't obvious the Dugray family is based on the real life Dupont family, just like how the Huntzbergers are based on the Sulzbergers
song recs: family jewels - Marina (ouch!), be here - palaye royale, everything is romantic - charli xcx
Tumblr media
The Dugray family have made their fortune as far back as the American revolution, starting with immigrating to America and manufacturing gunpowder for the American soldiers
This eventually led to the Dugray family owning one of the largest and most established chemical manufacturing corporations in America, DuGray
They invented a number of household names like pyrex, teflon, styrofoam, and even superglue, and also make ppe for people who work with or around chemicals
A while back, they also acquired two bank chains on the east coast, one of which is for east coast businesses, and the other is expanding slowly across america.
The Dugray family’s net worth is roughly 18.6 billion. I know.
Also, the Huntzberger family’s net worth is roughly 21.7 billion. I know.
Tristin mentions at one point that he has a “matching set” of baggage with Paris, and we know Paris’s parents are not at all close to her, or each other
We also know that her father is the head of a pharmaceutical company, and when her parents divorced it was in the newspaper
So yikes!
Anyway the only family mentioned by name is Janlon Dugrey, his paternal grandfather (I’m assuming if Janlon was his mom’s dad he would have a different last name yk)
So OBVIOUSLY I had to flesh things out a little
Looking at this family tree I made a while ago, Tristin has two older siblings: his oldest brother Royce, and his older sister and middle sibling Sutton
They’re both a bit older than Tristin, since his mom is their dad’s second wife
Truett DuGrey married Helena Holshire and had Royce, then Sutton
They divorced when Royce was around 7 and Sutton was almost 5 because Helena suspected Truett of cheating, and Truett suspected Helena of being a gold digger
Both were true
A couple years later, Truett is introduced to Blythe Ross while working on publicity for the banks his family as acquired
Blythe and Truett didn’t necessarily get along, but she could handle him better than most other women he’s met
They were actually introduced through Mitchum Huntzberger and his wife Shira, because Shira and Blythe are sisters
Surprise!
So Blythe gets pregnant and Truett can feel another Helena gold digger situation coming
That’s when Blythe tells him she can’t go to his work event because she has to go to a clinic
Truett stops in his tracks and realizes three things at the same time
Blythe is not in fact using a pregnancy to try and get access to his money
He loves his son Royce as much as he’s able to, but he’s already becoming apathetic and Truett can’t pass over the family business to someone with no drive or ambition
Royce is 10 by the way
Lastly, he realizes that this might actually be beneficial to him
So he convinces Blythe not to get an abortion and to elope instead
Once she gets her body back after the baby they’ll stage some wedding photos and claim it was from a little over a year ago so no one knows he had the baby out of wedlock
When she’s 18 weeks along, he schedules a private ultrasound to find out the baby’s gender
He tells her that if it’s a boy, everything will be fine
If it’s a girl, he’ll serve her annulment papers and nice fat alimony and child support checks to keep both of them out of his life
Blythe isn’t sure if she’s relieved or not when the doctors announce they’re going to be having a healthy baby boy, but Truett sure is
So he grows up watching his burnt out older brother and back bone of the family older sister navigate middle school and high school when he’s barely starting kindergarten
They don’t have any harsh feelings toward Tristin
Not really
They were just never that close yk
It’s like the pilot of umbrella academy, “we only see each other at weddings and funerals”
Except really, they only see each other when Truett forces them into whatever is going on with the family business, or to bail each other out of trouble
Royce is just waiting for his trust fund to kick in so he can fuck off and smoke weed in peace
Sutton is desperately trying to keep her image and life together while hiding her nicotine dependency and steadily growing pill problem from the public eye
And Tristin just wants to fucking feel something
His mom has been in and out of “med spas” and “wellness retreats” for so long he wouldn’t be surprised if she didn’t recognize him, and the only time he and his dad talk is when he’s making charges go away
Sutton is engaged to this guy Clint
And he’s fine or whatever, Tristin hasn’t really talked to him much before
But he’s keeping his ear to the ground to make sure he treats his sister right
Sure Sutton can be condescending and a total control freak and act more like a mom than his actual mom
But she’s still his sister
So Sutton’s been off planning this huge wedding and trying to start some lifestyle brand for luxury dog beds and organic phone cases or something
Royce barely managed to keep his latest DUI for driving stoned under wraps but Truett still found out and sent him off to rehab
So Tristin starts high school at Chilton feeling almost lonelier than ever
Tristin aches for consistency, for stability
Thanks to Duncan and Bowman he sort of has that
And people like Paris that he’s literally been in school with since he can remember
It’s not that they’re particularly close, but he just likes that she’s always around when he’s going to and from class
There’s a few other people like that too, loose acquaintances that haven’t dropped out or transferred
They make him feel like even if everything else has gone to shit, he still has his winning personality
And he still has Chilton

oh, so. there's this story thats semi-local to my hometown that ive been keeping up on via the reno subreddit. ive been gawking at it from afar in wonder bc i didnt know people could make this many bad decisions on purpose.
joey gilbert was a boxer who was forced to retire bc he's a cheating bitch who was roiding up and doing meth before fights. the list of drugs in his system would scatter an average human's atoms like dust.
as a shining example of the kind of education i paid for: joey gilbert graduated from my alma mater, UNR, with an english degree and then passed the nevada bar using a law degree gained from a diploma mill that is no longer accredited. so now gilbert practices law. this is the advertisement that greets you when you get off the plane at reno/tahoe airport.
Tumblr media
every time i see this i want to laugh my ass off. the vague use of meme formatting even though he doesn't understand the conventions of an impact font meme. he has the dead doll eyes described by clint in jaws. he looks like if lowtax attended his own funeral. there's no phone number or website. google me bitch.
anyway, that's not the point. gilbert evidently fried what was left of his tenderized boxer brain with speed and has tried to fashion himself as the VIP in douglas county/vegas conservative circles. i guess he fits right in because they willingly embraced him. he was at the jan 6 riot and will loudly espouse basically any belief as long as hes getting paid. he tried to run for gov and lost the primary by over 20k votes. somehow he claims this is election fraud. he has yet to explain the mechanisms that would explain how douglas county and its republican chapter manufactured over 20000 votes for a republican primary without anyone noticing during a time when election fraud is a hot button topic, all because they feared that the guy they test research chemicals on was a legitimate threat.
hold up my bad. actually gilbert says HE won by over 50000 and the city of las vegas is suppressing the results. his case was thrown out and he was fined 88k for wasting everyone's time.
okay now: in july of 2023 (insane link btw lol. they keep saying shit like "yeah i did that. problem, bitch?",) the conservative douglas county board of trustees had a bitch fit over their lawyer, who has been in the position for over 20 years, for refusing to enforce a transgender sports ban. in an act of retaliation he was fired by a narrow vote and replaced with........
JOEY GILBERT!!!!!!!!
pros of this exchange:
cons of this exchange: he costs more, has no formal law education, the ACLU is going to rip them a new hole, its now october and he has charged the school district an eye-watering 100k in two months. the previous firm charged 18k a month.
in response, the board of trustees is convening in order to fire......the superintendent who has been in the position for 30 years bc he was against gilbert from the start.
nevada is so dedicated to being number 50 in the nation. its honestly heartwarming to think that even the dumbest, toothless hick can make it there by simply lying nonstop. thats the american way, baby!

hello! this ask is prompted by a recent reblog of yours about rubber preservation. I'd love to hear your thoughts relating to TFs and preservation and plastics. what should folks know? any best practices for storage? do you think there's another way manufacturers could produce them to make them more hardy? etc etc. thanks :)
Sure! I'm not a conservator by trade (and even within conservation plastics are still somewhat of a new and niche thing), but I can offer some general advice.
The tl;dr is that like 90% of other materials your best bet is to keep them clean, out of strong light, in an environment that isn't too hot or too cold, and to avoid temperature/relative humidity (RH) fluctuations as much as possible. And above all, make sure that they're well-ventilated.
The tl;dr tl;dr is that plastics just suck.
More detail under the cut! (...Lots of detail. Sorry.)
There's 2 main problems with plastics.
The first is that a lot of them are just kind of inherently unstable. Unlike a nice chemically stable material like glass, they want to deteriorate when exposed to things like....oxygen. Rip. And once damage has set in, it's basically impossible to reverse/treat.
The second is that there's really no regulations or standards when it comes to the manufacture of plastics. There's a bazillion different types, and even if you're able to identify the specific kind via chemical test (and this often damages the object in question) it's almost impossible to know what other kinds of additives went into the plastic soup that created the thing in front of you. This also makes it really hard to develop a standardized approach to caring for and treating plastics, because two things can react wildly differently even if they appear virtually the same.
That means that when it comes to plastics, preventative conservation is the name of the game. You want to mitigate the effects of the agents of deterioration on the object as much as possible. And in the meantime, make peace with the fact that nothing can be preserved indefinitely :')
TFwiki has an article talking about the common types of plastic used in TF figures, which is neat and useful. Gonna hazard a guess that most figures are predominantly ABS, which is great because it's a fairly sturdy hard plastic that probably won't show effects for a while. I'd be statistically more concerned about figures with squishy, rubbery bits (looking with apprehension at my Kingdom line BW figures).
So! While the ideal environment for plastics is cold, dark, dry and oxygen-free (lol), when it comes to personal collections you can obviously only take reasonable measures. They're in our homes, not a vault. The main things you want to keep in mind:
Light fades and discolours plastic over time, and can eventually cause certain kinds to become brittle. The more lux that your figures are exposed to, the faster that's going to happen. So while it's not reasonable for your house to maintain museum-level lighting or shell out for fancy UV filtered cases, I'd keep your displays out of direct sunlight at minimum.
High temperatures can increase the rate of oxidation, and low ones can encourage shrinkage and brittleness. Either one can do damage over time, but what's worse is fluctuations in temp that force the material to weather one extreme to the other. If you've got your figures in a storage unit or something, a climate controlled one would be ideal, or at least insulating the box so that they're kept at a more stable temp. In the home, I'd keep them away from any vents/heaters.
As far as humidity goes, it's less damaging to plastics than a lot of other materials, but you still want to avoid any large fluctuations that will cause the material to expand and shrink (and eventually crack). Wherever you're storing your figures, try to make sure it's somewhere <65% RH (this is a high cutoff compared to most materials, so your home is probably fine unless you live somewhere humid without A/C).
Pollutants are a big one for plastics. Dust can cause microabrasions and damage over time, so keeping your figures clean is a good idea. I'd use a soft brush to avoid scratching your figures, or a lightly moist swab of some kind. Don't risk any kind of chemical cleaners, bleach, vinegar, etc. and I'd even avoid compressed air to be safe. If you want to be really careful about it, wash your hands before handling your figures. Humans carry all kinds of oil and dirt on their fingers- that's why museum professionals are often wearing gloves.
And then there's the problem of off-gassing...
Plastics can unfortunately give off vapours that can negatively affect other plastics in their vicinity. The especially bad ones are called malignant plastics (evil, scary), but it's hard to ID them until they start falling apart or damaging the things around them. Best course of action is to reduce contact between different figures (pose them together, but maybe don't leave someone's hand on someone else's shoulder for five years), and make sure that there's good ventilation.
If you're going to box up figures, don't be like me and store them in your parents' basement for years in an airtight container :') Go for a more pourous material like archival grade corrugated board, and use something as a buffer between figures like polyethylene bags/sheeting so that they're not touching (there's pros and cons to sealing each individual figure in a polyethylene bag- it'll be trapped with its own gases which could speed up deterioration, but the microclimate will keep it from affecting other figures around it).
And if you have boxed figures.... either commit to leaving them boxed forever or crack those bad boys open. My partner opened up their Pacific Rim figures after several years of them stewing in their own vapours and sadly they ended up falling apart in their hands. Thanks NECA.
As for manufacturing, you'd have to ask a chemist! I'm not sure exactly what it is that turns certain plastics to gunk and causes others to shatter, but I'm sure standardizing the way we make them would go a long way. Unfortunately, the stuff that's going to better for the planet in the long run (biodegradable) is also going to deteriorate quicker by design, so that's a whole other issue.
Anyway! That's a lot of info, but I hope it was an interesting and/or helpful introduction to plastic care lol. If you're interested in more thorough reading, I'll direct you to the CCI's handy dandy free online resource. They're an invaluable resource for all kinds of materials care.

ACT ONE: PART ONE
“Ow!”
"Watch it, loser!"
The door had opened right into your outstretched hand, and your knuckles screamed in pain, but you desperately tried to control your breathing as Eugene Thompson--aka Flash--scrambled past you. You glanced back at his burly figure and spiky blond hair thudding down the hall, bumping into everyone he could and blaming it on them. You shook your head, and carefully reached for the door again, quickly pulling it open.
You headed to the back of the classroom, holding your hand tenderly.
"Well, Y/N," started the teacher, and you looked up to see that no one else was in there. "Almost all the other kids just left to go on that field trip." He noticed you were in the back of the room. "Have a seat up here. I'm surprised you didn't go--after all, you're one of my top students."
You took a seat in the front, unzipping your backpack. "Yeah, well, I'm fine in your class, Mr. Kang, but science class is a different story."
He chuckled. Then he shrugged into his words: "I didn't have much planned today, so you're free to work on another class... science, perhaps?"
You nodded. "Will do."
You looked down at your hand that Flash had smashed the door into. It was still throbbing and red around the knuckles, but luckily didn't break open any skin. Then you checked the faint Light underneath the skin on your wrist, and took a calming breath when the energy dial was low. It will be fine, you reminded yourself. You shook out your arm, then pulled out your laptop.
The tab currently open was a few of your photography club pictures. You'd had them done for days, but thinking about showing them to anyone gave you goosebumps. You closed the tab, and opened the class site.
Your science teacher had posted an assignment for people not going on the field trip; that included you and only you. As you looked through it, you knew she'd done it simply to irk you, because you were learning about plant biology, not the chemistry behind a spider's venom. Of course, it was clear that the field trip was also useless, since your peers that went weren't required to take notes.
But you weren't about to go on that field trip. They were touring Oscorp, the second best robotics and chemical manufacturing company in the States.
Oscorp was also home to many of your fears. Sure, spiders were freaky, and their robots were always a little creepy to you, but they weren't even half of what truly scared you.
Suddenly, you noticed you'd been pressing the keys down hard, and the screen in front of you was full of the home row letters. You blinked, and put your head in your hands. Palms pressing on your eyes, you tried to focus on the shapes in your mind so you could stop thinking. But every flash of color was like memory lurking just below the surface.
It's going to be fine.
The door opened, and you looked up, eyes readjusting to the light through a squint, and met eyes with a couple students whose pleasant smiles quickly turned to upturned noses.
Your stomach lurched.
A batch of juniors that just so happened to hang with Flash--apparently they'd grown up with him, and kept hanging with him even when he got held back. So, of course, they loved to bully whoever he decided wasn't worth his time.
And that included you.
You felt your muscles tense up, and your heart rate was increasing ever so slowly, but you knew that you'd be fine with Mr. Kang in here--
"Oh, good! You just needed those copies for your project, right?" Mr. Kang said, getting up. "You can stay here and keep an eye on Y/N, though they probably don't need it, and I'll go print those for you."
"Yes, sir," said Julie. She cast you a nasty smile. "Thanks."
And soon enough, you were alone with a gang of bullies. Your hands squeezed into fists as your thoughts turned dark.
There were four of them in total. A tall football boy with greasy blond hair past his ears folded his arms and flexed his chest over them. You thought his name was Connor. A girl holding a phone in front of her face ruffled her coffee-brown hair so she had an extreme side part, and then stuck out her tongue and its piercing for a picture. You didn't remember her name, but knew her follower count was impressive. Then there was Julie's boyfriend, Riley, who had his arm across her shoulders and his chin held high in the air.
But Julie was the clear leader when Flash wasn't around. She held herself so confidently, and twirled her long red hair with one finger in a way that almost seemed like a threat. You swallowed, and gave the best smile you could muster, then glanced back down at your screen. With tense muscles, you sat there praying.
It's fine, you're fine, you're calm, you're normal, you're fine!
She marched over to your desk, but you were glued to your seat in fear. When you met her eyes again, they were livid.
"Good morning," you said. But maybe you really should have stayed quiet this time.
~~
"Does anyone want to take a guess at what percentage of the work done here began in Mr. Osborn’s notebook?”
“Probably one percent, tops,” said Flash, snickering. “If his straight-C's son took after him, that is.”
“Anyone else?” Liz said, shaking her head. She was technically supposed to be learning with the rest of the sophomores, but she was an intern there. They asked her to take the group on a tour, and thanks to her confident smile, Jongseob couldn't take his eyes off of her.
She tucked her dark wavy hair behind her ear, and he watched her bright eyes search the group. He didn’t notice that she’d focused on him. “Jongseob?”
“Sorry?” His face heated up as he glanced away. “Um, seventy percent?”
She grinned. “That’s more like it.” He felt his heart skip a beat when she smiled especially brightly in his direction.
Soul leaned over his shoulder and whispered, “Dude, do you think she’s into you? That was-“
“Shut up, Leeds.” Jongseob nudged in the side. Soul leaned away, laughing.
Liz shook her head once more at another kid, and then Intak raised his hand.
“90 percent.”
“That is correct! Mr. Norman Osborn is the main mastermind behind this company’s projects. Of course, Intak would know more about it than me, but…” She gave a close-lipped smile. “If you’ll look here…”
Soul patted Intak on his shoulder. “Flash just shot you the nastiest look. Should I fight him to defend your honor?”
Jongseob and Intak blinked at him. He hunched over.
“Yeah, who am I kidding? I’m not street smart. I can’t give up my perfect school report to defend you.”
Intak shook his head in a chuckle. “Either way, my father doesn’t reflect what I’m like in school. Flash has a point. I get B’s in my first language, and my dad comes up with all the latest ground-breaking technology.”
"Yeah, I'm not so sure about that," Jongseob said with a laugh. "How could your dad have come up with all of this? He's just a guy."
Intak shoved his hands in his pockets. "You'd be surprised."
“Now, if you follow me to the next room,” Liz announced, opening a door that Flash immediately strutted through, “you’ll be able to see work on the neutralization of deadly spider venom.”
The class gasped a little at the sight of webs strung across the entire room. Flash tensed, and froze in the doorway.
“These spiders live the average amount of time and can eat the same things as usual, but their venom is engineered not to hurt humans in any way.”
“L-let’s go to the next room,” Flash said, backing away.
“Not yet. Are there any volunteers to hold one of these little spiders?”
Jongseob glanced at his friends, but Soul shook his head hard. Intak crossed his arms and smiled sweetly. “Jongseob will!” he called.
His heart dropped. “No, dude, what?”
“Don’t you think it would impress Liz?”
“Come on, Jongseob!” she said.
And then he found himself pushed to the front of the group, presented with a spindly arachnid hanging by a string. Its beady eyes stared down at him, legs wiggling as it lowered itself. It was like it knew what was happening. He held a shaking hand below it, every part in his body already tingling in anticipation and, honestly, fear. He knew it wouldn't hurt him, but he couldn't get over the thought of eight legs crawling all over him.
And then it hit his skin. The whole class seemed to shiver in excitement, watching the nerd hold a bug half the size of his palm. But it did nothing. They just stared at each other.
"See?" Liz offered. "It's entirely harmless."
Jongseob allowed himself a calming breath, and then laughed. It inched down to his wrist. "This isn't so ba- Ow!"
The spider went flying through the air as Jongseob looked down at his wrist in shock. It bit him! It wasn't supposed to injure him in the long run, but the bite was right beside the Light. He shifted his sleeve a little and watched his veins pulse strangely, before reverting back to normal.
"Hey--Jong-" Liz rushed toward him, reaching for his hand, but he flinched away.
"I'm fine! Haha, don't worry. It's not like it'll kill me."
Her brows furrowed, but then she nodded, and turned to the screaming group trying to get away from the rampant spider. Flash was nowhere to be seen.
He looked back down at his wrist. Sweat beaded on his forehead. He swallowed, hard. Then he rushed out the door, knocking into Intak's shoulder on the way. Where were the restrooms? He barely made it to his own stall before collapsing over the toilet, gagging.
~~
"Stupid, stupid, stupid." You patted down the entirety of your backpack and quickly realized your chip wasn't in there. It was like an inhaler for your "episodes", and every time you got too confident in yourself, you let it go missing. And right now wasn't a good time for it to be.
A shudder passed through your body, and your jaw clenched so hard, you thought you might crack a tooth. You glanced at the juniors, and knew immediately that this would be bad. You just had to leave--
"So, Y/N, I hear you got a perfect score on the science homework," Julie started with a smirk. "Oh, wait, you didn't even turn it in. Thanks, by the way, for lending it to me."
She sat on your desk, and you immediately stood up, accidentally pushing your notebook off the desk. The juniors gasped. All you could feel was your blood rushing in your ears. She scoffed, and her friends stepped closer to you.
"It's not like you needed it. Are you going somewhere?"
You tried to take a slow, calm breath, but it sounded angry.
"Got--to--go," you managed, before shoving past a couple of them. They reached out to grab you, but recoiled from your skin. Your arms were rock hard--not because of any muscles, but because of the episode that was beginning. You had to get out of there, before you exploded.
You pushed open the door in a hurry, revealing a shocked Mr. Kang and a stack of papers going everywhere. You couldn't even squeak an apology, and instead tears began to stream down your cheeks as you ran.
"Julie? We need to talk," you heard him say, and then you rounded a corner and slammed into the fire retardant box on the wall.
Its door went flying, and you didn't even bat an eye until you reached the restroom and could splash your face with cold water. You couldn't even feel it, which was a really bad sign. But you kept doing it, hoping that it would reverse the effects. When you started feeling the chill, you stopped, and ripped a paper towel from the dispenser to dry off. You hadn't even noticed the water had splashed all over your front side until then.
"Great." You grabbed another paper towel and tried to pat off the wet splotches on your shirt, but it didn't help. You caught yourself in the mirror and laughed. You were a sight to behold, for sure.
Your eyebags were the biggest thing on your face. Your eyebrows were drawn in a permanent scowl. Worst of all, you could still see the uncontrollable fear of yourself in your eyes. You were disgusting--horrible. You could imagine the headline: "UNDERCOVER FREAK OF NATURE INFILTRATED HIGH SCHOOL." Thanks to Julie and her gang, you were always on edge, wondering which day would be your last at this school. Sometimes you resented her for the fear. Today you found yourself wishing she had won this time. Maybe then you wouldn't have to hide. Maybe then someone would hear you out.
Maybe then you'd get help.
But as you stared into your own soul, you knew there would always be something wrong. You couldn't be fixed. A monster that hid under its own bed was better than a monster running free.
There was a knock at the door, and your head flung toward the sound. "Y/N? It's Mr. Kang."
Your voice stuck in your throat. Glancing down to your wrist, the dial seemed to be cooling down. You shuffled your feet to the door, opening it shakily.
When he saw you, he sighed in relief. "I'm glad you're okay. I had my suspicions about Julie and her friends, but I didn't know they had a problem with you."
All you could do was nod.
He pursed his lips. "Let's go talk to the principal."
You followed him, the sound of shoes on the floor echoing in your ears, but all the while you wondered how you weren't spotted yet. How did he not realize you were the freak? If anyone deserved to be bullied, it was you.
"No one deserves to be bullied, Y/N," he said suddenly. You blinked, and he chuckled. "That must be why you stayed quiet about it, right? Well, you're wrong. You are a great student and a good person."
"Thanks, Mr. Kang." There was really nothing else to say.
"So, you're being bullied? Homework stolen, a couple of sharp words, and you've been physically hurt before?"
"Yes, sir." You looked down at your hands, tugging your sleeve further over your wrist. Mr. Kang had gotten you a dress code sweatshirt to replace your soaked one. It gave you little comfort when speaking to the principal like this.
"I'm thankful for the report." The principal cleared his throat, and finished typing. "However, Y/N, I can't let your own behavior slide. Not fully."
You snapped your eyes upward, suddenly feeling a tingling in your body. You struggled through a calming breath, but your eyes clouded up anyway. "Sir?"
It's fine, it's fine.
"You broke school property today. The fire retardant case is completely smashed on the floor. I'm afraid you'll have to pay if off. Since you're a great student and I don't totally blame you, only worry about two hundred bucks of it."
You released a shaky breath, nodded, and reminded yourself that they really couldn't know anything was different about you. Hardly anything really went wrong, and accidents happen. You could pay this off, and then no one would have to pry further. If only you had the money.
~~
“Hey, Jongseob?”
Jongseob squeezed his eyes shut, tears wetting his lashes. He clutched his stomach gently, leaning a little bit more over the toilet. He was on his knees, keeled over in a public stall, and he’d forgotten to close the door. Well, it was too late now.
“Jongseob, are you in here?”
It was Intak. He wanted to sigh in relief, but every movement he took made him more aware of the nausea building up. He glanced at his wrist again, but the bite was still very prominent.
Can’t harm him? Yeah, right. Stupid, stupid, stupid! He’d always pretended to be the same as everyone else. But the light on his wrist was proof of otherwise. He suddenly gagged, and ripped his hand from his stomach to the toilet seat to brace himself.
The episode came and went, but then he saw that the entire front of his shirt had come off with his hand now on the cool ceramic. Fresh air met his sweaty chest, and he took a steady breath.
Footsteps approached quickly, then, and he knew immediately that Intak was there.
“Oh, man, are you okay?”
Jongseob’s cheeks burned in embarrassment. He wasn’t necessarily a cool guy in front of his friends, but this was sort of humiliating. The son of the creator of these spiders witnessed him basically overreact.
“I’m sorry,” he managed, hanging his head.
No answer. He heard paper rip and water run, and then Intak came back over and pressed a damp towel to his forehead.
“Don’t be sorry. A lot of times the placebo effect really does affect you like this. You know it’s not gonna hurt you, but some part of you still fears it, so your body reacts.”
Jongseob tensed, and finally looked up at his friend. He was shocked to see a kind smile, where there normally sat a reserved frown.
“It’s totally normal, it’ll be fine.”
“I want to go home.”
Intak nodded. “Let’s go. Where’d your shirt go?” Then he spotted it. “Ah.”
“I don’t even know.”
Somehow Intak snuck him out of the crowded building, and got him an extra lab coat to cover up with, no problem at all. He was starting to feel much better, and wondered if he should say he’s fine to go back.
But they were already in a taxi headed to his Aunt May’s house, so he let himself recover. He pressed his palms against the leather beneath him, and stared out the window at the city flashing by.
Oh no—Aunt May! That would not end well. If she saw him come home early looking so sick, she’d ask questions. He knew logically, it wouldn’t be a big deal to lie a little bit, but he also knew he was a terrible liar.
“My dad will pay for any healthcare you need, if you do.”
He sucked in a breath. “No, no, it’s not a big deal. I feel much better by now.”
Intak laughed, “Good! Because explaining this to him would honestly suck.”
Jongseob believed that. Mr. Osborn was a stern man, and he could guess that he wouldn’t be too happy to hear his project was having negative effects. He’d probably care more about silencing this incident than Jongseob himself.
But that wasn’t a big deal.
“Woah, you can’t even see the bite anymore!”
Jongseob jumped and looked down, and realized it really was gone. Like nothing happened. Maybe he really had imagined it. He sighed, looking out the window once more. Intak patted his shoulder with a similar sigh.
The taxi stopped, and Jongseob realized he was staring right at his house. He started, and thanked Intak sincerely, offering to pay him back. As always, that wasn’t an option. Intak waved goodbye and Jongseob turned to face his front door alone.
Unfortunately for him, Aunt May spotted him through the glass of the door almost immediately.
“Jongseob!” she exclaimed when he opened the door. “What- what are you doing back here so early?” She threw down a pile of folded towels—it was laundry day—and reached out to caress his face with soft, cool hands. “You‘ve got a fever.”
“Just a small one, but I guess it was enough to leave early.”
Her forehead creased and her worry lines grew deeper. Before she could say anything, he continued.
“Honestly, I just wanted to leave. It was boring and had nothing to do with class. I have homework to do.”
She stepped back, eyeing him with suspicion. “Alright. Well, help me carry these up to the bathroom and then you can get on with that schoolwork.” She wagged a bony finger in the air, and a smile began to form on her lips again. “You’ve got to keep your scholarship, or you’ll be getting a job!”
Jongseob relaxed, and took the towels with a forced smile, hurrying up the stairs. “Love you, Aunt May!”
“Oh, get on with it!”
But once he’d ducked into the bathroom, he realized there really was something wrong. The towels wouldn’t drop. It was like he was… sticky.

G Witch Onscreen Text: Episode 6
GRAAAHH!! This is part SEVEN in my attempt to transcribe and discuss all the onscreen text in G Witch!! Because I CAN!!! GRAHH!! We're on episode 6, halfway through season 1!! Grah Graaaahh!!!
Click here to go back to Episode FIVE!! Grahhh!!!
Tumblr media
Let us begin.
Tumblr media
Not text, but during Bel and Prospera's initial confrontation, the building they're in has art pieces on display. Maybe it's some kind of museum?
Tumblr media
Not text again, but we don't get very many looks into the common areas of the 3 branches, so here's Jeturk House's. It's really flashy and gold, huh? It also matches the aesthetic of Vim's office.
Tumblr media
During the scene with Bel and El4n, Bel consults the data on this monitor when she tells him that he'll be fine piloting the Pharact for the duel against Suletta. We get a couple of shots of this monitor, so I'll do my best to glean what information I can from it.
Tumblr media
On the left side of the monitor is a mockup of the Pharact. TEXT: (Top Left) REGISTERED NAME: PHARACT MS: FP/A-77 PMET CODE: P017-0046
(Bottom Left) MANUFACTURER: PEIL TECHNOLOGIES STATUS: IN TEST OPERATION
We see the Pharact's Permet Code here, that being PO17-0046. The 'P' probably stands for 'Peil.' Also, have you noticed the the MS IDs for all of Peil's mobile suits have a '/' in them? The 3 branches all have their own unique naming conventions when it comes to their MS codes. It's obvious, sure, but it's something you might not have noticed unless you were looking at it.
Tumblr media
This info here, on the right side of the monitor, is much more interesting. TEXT (Header) No. 4 ENHANCED PERSON >PILOTING DEPARTMENT >ID. NO: KP002 NAME: ELAN CERES
This screen is how we learn that El4n is indeed the 4th Enhanced Person in the show proper.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Underneath the header is this info box and a graph. The box on the left says DECISION CRITERIA D2 ***EXAMINATION
What this box means is mostly speculation on my part, but I believe this is a grading system that evaluates the remaining health/usefulness of an enhanced person. There's a red arrow pointing down, implying that this grade, D2, is worse than the grade from the previous evaluation.
The graph to its right is a bit harder to analyze.
Tumblr media
It's exceedingly similar to the graph shown during the Shin Sei Inquiry by Shaddiq, that measured Aerial's Permet Influx, but they probably aren't measuring the same thing.
Tumblr media
I think it's probably closer to the little bit of this graph we see in the prologue, that I speculated was a measurement of a pilot's exposure to a data storm.
The graph has no title, it only says PHASE on the header, followed by Sys REC Ver. 2.0, which means this data was either recorded from the Pharact of El4n's body. The highlighted point is labelled CHH.
My BEST guess is it's measuring the amount of Permet radiation his body is suffering from.
Tumblr media
Underneath the graph is this subfield TEXT (top to bottom.) PMET LINK COMPATIBILITY TEST TEST CASE: 04 | STATUS PMET LINKED CNS | CONTROLLED PMET LINKED PNS | CONTROLLED PMET-CNS INTEGRATION | NO ABNORMALITY MOTOR FUNCTION TEST | NO ABNORMALITY HEMANALYSIS | NO ABNORMALITY CARDIOPULMONARY FUNCTION TEST | NO ABNORMALITY NERVE DAMAGE TEST | CONDITIONALLY ACCEPTABLE CELL SURVIVAL TEST | CONDITIONALLY ACCEPTABLE
This is an evaluation of El4n's body, and from this we get a really good look into the true danger of piloting a Gundam.
To start, CNS stands for Central Nervous System, and PNS stands for Peripheral Nervous System. The first box is analyzing the status of the artificial nervous system implanted into El4n's body.
PMET-CNS INTEGRATION can thus be assumed to be analyzing its integration with the rest of El4n's body. MOTOR FUNCTION TEST is self evident, an analysis of El4n's motor skills. HEMANALYSIS is an analysis on the chemical composition of one's blood. CARDIOPULMONARY FUNCTION TEST is a test evaluating the strength and health of your heart and lungs.
NERVE DAMAGE TEST and CELL SURVIVAL TEST are self evident, but what's most important about them is that, unlike the rest of his results, they're labeled CONDITIONALLY ACCEPTABLE. If he hadn't been disposed of by Peil, we can see that this is probably what would have killed him. A combination of Cellular Necrosis and Nerve Damage.
We can glean from this chart that over exposure to Permet primarily affects the Nervous, Cardiovascular, and Pulmonary systems, as well as cause cellular necrosis.
Tumblr media
Finally, though we unfortunately never get a closer look at it than this, there's this final box here, labeled EEG[???], and contains what i think is a CT scan of El4n's brain.
Tumblr media
TEXT: PROPULSION CONTROL SYSTEM HIGH MANEUVER MODE
When Suletta is piloting the Aerial to test out the thrusters, we can see the system and mode being tested.
Tumblr media
When talking to Miorine and Nika in their shuttle, we can see SS/O.M is added to the com screen on Suletta's phone. Not sure what it means !
Tumblr media
Not text but I love Mio's face here after she finishes giving Suletta the pep talk, but before she responds to Nika. She's like, hm! Helping Suletta felt really good. I hope this doesn't awaken anything in me.
Tumblr media
El4n doesn't have anything in his room whatsoever.
Tumblr media
When Suletta asks to talk to El4n, they can't get a hold of him directly, so they just do a HOUSE WIDE BROADCAST instead.
Tumblr media
TEXT: MECHANICAL DEPARTMENT ID No: KM079 NAME: EARLTON WELLS.
Not important, but one of the two students Suletta speaks to is named Earlton Wells.
Tumblr media
During the duel, Bell can tell that El4n isn't doing well because his flight path is jagged, he can't fly straight anymore.
Tumblr media
We can't read this error message, but we can read PMET SCORE 4, so its most likely an error related to that.
Tumblr media
We can see the alert message on El4n's screen when he's about to run into the meteor. It just says ALERT.
Tumblr media
When Suletta is trapped and Aerial increases its Permet Score, we can see little whispy things on the main monitor. Oooohhh..pretty...
Tumblr media
So, bit of a mixup here, before, when Suletta defeated Guel in the rematch, it said she had 2 wins, which made it seem like her previous win had been reinstated. That wasn't true! It was just a mistake, because when she defeats El4n here, she still only has 2 wins. Can't win em all !
Tumblr media
Here, we can see that time and temperature in Asticassia's simulated environment. It says 26 degrees and is sunny, which means that Asticassia uses Celsius and not Farenheit.
Tumblr media
When Bel begs the Peil Witches to reconsider, if you look at the monitor, you can see Elan hanging up in front of the laser. They're watching him die here, and Bel saw it too.
AND THATS IT!!! HUAAAAHHH!!! THANK YOU FOR READING! I NEED TO GO! YOUR FINAL GIFT:
Tumblr media
You ever notice how since the beginning the Enhanced Persons were alluded to be like Eri because only 4 and 5 were ever able to see and hear her when they're overloaded with Permet?

Sicktember - day 3
3. "What happened to your phenomenal immune system, huh?”
Leader sniffed slightly, wiping their nose. Right-hand shot them a look as they peered through their binoculars at the chemical plant. “How silent of you…” They teased, only for Leader to shoot them an equally dirty look back. They put their hand to their lips, gesturing with their eyes at the plant, before returning to watch it.
Both of them were lying on their stomachs, peeking through a rather thorny bush at a chemical plant rumoured to be manufacturing illegal substances, substances that could cause havoc if released into the general population. It was imperative that they were not caught. However, the night was cold, and the compacted dirt had been warm when they arrived, just after sundown, but had now become freezing.
‘Guess that’s the desert…’ Thought Right-hand as they glanced at Leader. They looked a bit pale, that was probably the moonlight washing them out, but something was off in their eyes, they weren’t looking as sharp as usual.
After a couple more minutes of watching the plant, the two of them decided to leave, making their way to the pickup point. Soon they were far enough away from the plant to be able to walk, Right-hand picked up their pace as Leader tagged along behind.
“You sure you’re okay?” Right-hand asked, wiping some dust from their front. All it did was smear the mark further into the fibers of the fabric. “Hmm?” Leader looked up, sniffing again. “What? Yeah, no, I-I’m fine, just tired and cold.” Right-hand frowned, walking up to Leader and wrapping their arms around their shoulders, pulling them closer to their own body heat. Leader felt pretty warm already, maybe slightly too warm as they leaned into their friend.
“Are you sick?” Right-hand asked, looking at Leader. Leader blinked, looking up at them in surprise. “What? No, like i said, just tired. It’s been a long, boring, cold night so…” They smiled at Right-hand. “Besides, you know I never get sick, I have a phenomenal immune system.”
They flashed their signature grin, as the two of them wandered over to the rock by the side of the road they were supposed to wait by. Leader sat down on it, wrapping their arm around their stomach and hunching over, trying to keep warm.
“You sure you’re not coming down with something?” Right-hand asked, sitting beside them. Leader nodded, “Yeah. I’m fine. The cold ground just... made me cold.” They sat up straight, trying to look relaxed as they waited for the pickup. In the distance, they could see a pair of lights flick on.
The large, black car pulled up, the door opening quickly. Leader and Right-hand piled in, smiling at the team inside, who clapped them on their backs and cheered. The driver took off down the dusty road, back towards their base, the mission had been a roaring success. Leader and Right-hand sank down into the leather seats at the back of the SUV, speaking in hushed tones to a guy with a laptop, sharing everything they had seen.
“It looked like a shipment of chemicals came in at 22:4-” Leader was suddenly cut off by a small hiccup. They blinked in surprise, looking at Right-hand who melted. “Aww, did you hiccup?” They teased, “I had no idea your hiccups were so adorablllllllle.” Leader shot them a dirty look going slightly pink. Right-hand was like an annoying older sibling to them, they teased each other relentlessly, and it seemed like Right-hand had just discovered new ammunition.
“It’s not -hic- cute…” Leader grumbled, crossing their arms over their chest and pouting. Leader felt a little self conscious, they had an image to uphold. They couldn’t be Leader, the fearless fighter, skilled tactician and the adorable hiccups… The computer guy smirked, his face illuminated by the screen. “They are pretty cute.” Leader was glad the car was dim, as their cheeks burned with embarrassment.
They sighed, trying to swallow their hiccups as they recounted the rest of the information.
“As I was saying…” They began, glaring at both Right-hand and the computer guy.
“At 22:46, an unmarked, white -hic- van came into the fac -hic- facility.” They scowled at the interruption of their hiccups. “It had -hic- not plates and no identify -hic- identifying marks.” Leader rested their right hand on their stomach a little, noticing that it felt strange. ‘Probably just from lying on the ground in the same position for hours.’ They told themself, but they couldn’t help the feeling creeping in the back of their mind.
Leader got the hiccups every time they got sick, but that never happened. They were healthy, they kept themself to a strict schedule of rest and training, they couldn’t have caught something… Their stomach seemed to say otherwise, as it growled quietly. Right-hand looked at Leader, who looked down at their abdomen. “You hungry?” Computer guy asked, picking up a half eaten burger from a fast food place.
It seemed that the SUV had made a quick pitstop.
The thought of eating something right now made Leader feel slightly woozy. They shook their head, “I’ll have something later. -hic- Anyway, the van was -hic- full of barrels, and they ha -hic- had what appeared to be some kind of war -hic- ning labe -hic- label on them -hic-.” Leader sighed and hiccuped as the computer guy and Right-hand quietly snorted. This was hilarious, at least to them.
All it did was fill Leader with a sinking feeling of dread. ~~ When the SUV pulled up at their destination, everyone clambered out, tired from the long trip. Leader’s hiccups had ceased about an hour before, but now they were beginning to feel jittery. They followed everyone into the debrief room, their head feeling thick. Coughing a little, they felt their throat begin to ache, but they pushed it down and plastered on a serious face as everyone sat down for their debrief in the conference room.
It only lasted 10 minutes, but they were 10 long, agonising minutes. Leader wrapped their arms around their middle and hunched over as everyone began speaking, discussing further plans and strategies., whilst Leader focused on trying to swallow a rising coughing fit.
“What do you think Leader?” One of the people who had been talking asked them, Leader looking up, not realising they had zoned out. “Huh?” Their voice was quiet and hollow sounding as they sat up straighter, looking at the plan doodled on the white board behind the speaker.
They flashed over the plan with their eyes, nodding, the motion making their headache worse. Clearing their throat and trying to sound as normal as possible they spoke. “It’s good. Though I think you need to infiltrate from the west. That way their defence will be looking directly into the setting sun. It’ll give us the advantage-“ They were choked off by a rising cough, harsh and deep. They covered their mouth with their elbow, before clearing their throat again.
“That… that’s actually a really good idea. Thanks, Leader.” Leader nodded again, grimacing as they felt headache knock around in their skull. They gripped the edge of the table they were sitting at, trying to ignore the annoying buzzing coming from the light above their head as they listened. It was all becoming a bit of a blur.
The next thing they knew, everyone was standing and leaving the room. Right-hand inched over tentatively as Leader pushed themself up onto their feet, trying to stop their arms and legs shaking like jelly. The world felt strange, tilting slightly as a cold flush washed down their body.
“Leader? Are you sure you’re okay? You look a bit… pale.” Right-hand chose their words carefully, trying not to suggest the ’s’ word.
They knew Leader would refuse to admit they were sick to Right-hand, even if they were puking their guts up in front of them. They had known Leader long enough to know that they hated being sick. It rarely happened, but when it did, it hit Leader harder than most people. They would jokingly brag about how they never got sick, but Right-hand always got the feeling it was partly to hide their anxiety about it.
Right now, Leader was swaying slightly, staring blankly at the table below them, pressing their fingertips into it. They were still slightly coated in a layer of dust, specks of it dusting their messy hair. Right-hand watched as Leader turned their head slowly, inhaling deeply and looking at them square on. “I’m fine.” They lied. “Just tired.” Right-hand looked skeptical.
“Come on, I’m taking you home.” They wrapped their arm around Leader, guiding them on their shaking legs towards the door. They could tell by the way Leader was tensing their muscles that they were trying to stop their body shaking. Leader leaned into Right-hand a little, sighing, their hot breath tickling Right-hand’s skin... It was very hot breath... It shouldn’t be that hot.
“You are sick!” Right-hand couldn’t stop themself, their accusing tone rising, as they looked at Leader’s glassy eyed stare.
“‘Nnnnuuhh ‘mmm not…” Leader mumbled, taking another step. Their legs fell from under them as they shuddered, sniffing hard. Their nose was clogging up rapidly, and all the sniffing was making it worse. Right-hand steadied them before pulling them close. “Hold on.” They said, trying to keep Leader from pulling away.
Right-hand managed to get Leader to the car, strapping them into the passenger seat and shutting the door. When they got around to the drivers side, Leader was leaning their head against the cold glass of the door window, their breath condensing on it in slowly forming clouds. Their eyes were shut as they sat there, Right-hand unsure if they were even conscious.
Leader jumped when the car rumbled to life, ‘Wait… when did I get in here?’ They thought to themself looking to Right-hand with bleary eyes. Nausea hit them like a wave as they slumped back into the seat, half lidded eyes staring at the road in front of them.
The sun was rising and the sky was slowly turning from back to a dusky blue.
~~
When they got back to the barracks, Leader pushed themself out of the seat and stumbled inside. All they wanted was to shower and sleep.
“Hey!” Right-hand called out.
“What?!” Leader whirled around, stumbling as they became unbalanced. They steadied themself, before glaring at Right-hand. “What…?” They breathed, chest rising and falling rapidly as they tried to catch their breath.
Right-hand shook their head. “Leader… Please, just admit you’re sick and let me help you. For god’s sake, you can’t do this on your own, you can hardly stand!” Leader grimaced, scowling. “I just wanna have a shower and sleep…” Their hollow whispering voice wavered, making Right-hand concerned.
Leader turned and staggered slowly through the door, leaning on the walls to get into the living area. They collapsed on the sofa curling up and hugging their stomach, shaking badly. They couldn’t move, they were so achy and cold. They felt so lightheaded, they could hardly see. A blurry shape appeared in their vision, getting closer and closer. “Leader?” Right-hand’s voice broke through the ringing in their ears that they hadn’t noticed had started.
All Leader could do was softly moan, the nausea overcoming them as the world tilted around them. “I thought you were going to have a shower?” Right-hand prodded their shoulder. Sweat was pouring from Leader’s forehead as they looked up at Right-hand, slowly rolling onto their back. It was more comfortable like that. “Yeah… ‘m jusss… restin’ my eyes for a seconmnnmmmgghhh…”
Leader’s lightheadedness seemed to get worse and they squeezed their eyes shut, their arms squeezing their stomach harder. They gritted their teeth and groaned softly, shuddering as a cold chill overcame them.
“Hhhgnn…” The sound slipped from Leader's lips as they shook, making Right-hand touch their chest, feeling their racing heartbeat.
Leader thought it was nice, feeling something so warm on their body.
Right-hand hummed, picking up Leader and carrying them to their room. Leader was half aware that they had been picked up, weakly mumbling as they tried to twist out of Right-hand’s arms. “Mmm…no… put me down… I can… walk my…myself…” Right-hand held them tighter to their chest, hushing them.
“Shh, sh, sh, shhhh. You need to be in bed.” Leader whined, their chest rising and falling with great effort as they tried to breathe through the waves of nausea, threatening to make them hurl.
~~
Right-hand got Leader to their room, gently laying them out on their bed and removing their shoes. Leader jerked suddenly, feeling their left boot slide off. They turned their head, looking around in confusion. “When did I get in here…?” They glanced at Right-hand, who pulled their right boot off. “Right-hand…? Whaddareyoudoing…? When… when diiii I ge… ngh…” A coughing fit surged up Leader’s throat, making them hack up their lungs violently.
Their head felt funny as they finished coughing, sniffing a drop of snot back up into their nose. Right-hand helped Leader shift under the sheets, Leader not even having the energy to fight anymore as Right-hand lay a blanket over them. They felt cold, making Leader shake even more, but their weight was comforting to Leader, who’s eyes slid shut. They were vaguely aware of Right-hand brushing a hand over their forehead, the sensation sending prickles over Leader’s skin.
“Get some sleep Leader…” Right-hand whispered, before slipping out of the room and closing the door behind them. They walked over to Medic’s door, timidly knocking on it. They knew Medic liked their sleep, and felt bad for waking them, but they needed them to check on Leader.
The door swung open suddenly, revealing a pissed Medic. They were wearing an oversized t-shirt that hung off their frame and sagging sweatpants, loose around their hips. They narrowed their eyes, “What? It’s 5 am. I swear to everything that is sacred if you drank another smoothie, I will shove the lactase up your ass…” They trailed off as they saw the look on Right-hand’s face, their own face suddenly looking scared.
“Right-hand…” They whispered. “Where’s Leader… A-a-are they okay?” Medic’s hand’s shook as they took a step forward. Right-hand nodded, lifting a finger to their lips and leading them to Leader’s room. Medic let out a sigh of relief when they saw Leader sleeping in their bed, safe and warm. Something seemed off though, and they looked to Right-hand frowning. “Why are they breathing like that?” They murmured, venturing into Leader’s room, being careful not to wake them up.
Right-hand hovered in the doorway, anxiously waiting as Medic brushed their hand over Leader’s forehead. “Shit.” Medic whispered. “They’re burning up. Help me cool them down.” They beckoned Right-hand over pulling back the sheets and wrestling Leader’s drenched shirt off them.
Leader turned their head, mumbling in annoyance, sleepily trying to push Medic’s hand away, but they only managed to lift their arm before it flopped onto their soaked, heaving chest. Right-hand watched as Leader’s chest rose and fell, Leader’s gasping breaths filling their ears. A moan broke them out of their stupor as Leader opened their eyes.
Almost immediately, they rolled back again, Leader’s head lolling to the side as their body went limp. Medic was checking their pulse and breathing, Right-hand standing around awkwardly. “Go get me my notebook, it’s in my first aid kit under my bed.” Medic ordered, not looking up from Leader.
Right-hand returned, Medic reaching out for the notebook. They jotted down some numbers before sighing, opening the curtains so they could see. The gentle morning sun lit up the room and Leader groaned, lifting their arm and resting it over their eyes. Their cheeks were flushed pink, their exposed chest shining with sweat. Right-hand had never seen someone this sick before.
~~
The rest of the team soon woke up, passing by Right-hand as they went to bed. Right-hand had left Medic to keep an eye on Leader in case they got worse, but what they needed right now was to shower and sleep, just like Leader had wanted. Leader had taken to passing in and out every few minutes, mumbling deliriously about something unintelligible. They kept kicking their sheets off and crying out quietly, squeezing their eyes tighter together as they rode out the nausea.
Right-hand awoke hours later, shuffling into Leader’s room to check on them. Medic was no where to be found, but Leader was lying there, half conscious and moaning softly. They turned their head and opened their eyes a little as they heard Right-hand enter, staring vacantly at them. "What happened to your phenomenal immune system, huh?” Right-hand teased, chuckling nervously.
Somewhere, deep down, Leader knew they were trying to ease the tension. “Hhhhhh…” Was all Leader could manage to answer, sounding half amused at the joke. Leader’s breath was hot against there lips as they parted them, fighting to stay conscious. Right-hand came over, looking down at them as they smiled weakly. “Fuck off…” They whispered, their voice hoarse.
Right-hand smirked, “Glad to see you’re feeling better.” Leader closed their eyes slowly. “Nnnnh…Medic… gave me… something… Makes me feel weird…” They whispered, opening their eyes again. “Did you… sleep?” Right-hand nodded. “Lucky… bastard…” Leader choked on a cough, wheezing as they pushed themself up with Right-hand’s help. They gasped for air between coughs, trying desperately to calm their breathing, their head spinning.
Medic came hurtling into the room at the sound, rushing to Leader’s side. They looked into Leader’s desperate eyes before the coughing seemed to calm, and Leader collapsed forwards, wheezing as they caught their breath. “Leader, I don’t like this… You should be in hospital.” Leader shook their head. “No…” They rasped, “No… hospital…” Their pleading eyes looked at Medic, who clicked their tongue and lay Leader back down. “I’m gonna run you a bath, you’re still caked in dust, it’s making your coughing worse. Right-hand, get them some new clothes ready while they wait.” Right-hand nodded, going to Leader’s closet.
Leader groaned, pushing themself up. “Nah… Let me… do it… You don’t… you don’t have to…” They were overcome with another coughing fit, the coughs reverberating in their chest. “Ugh…” They moaned, wiping off the mucus on their elbow with their shirt.
Medic materialised out of nowhere, piping up from the doorway and causing both Right-hand and Leader to jump. “Bath’s ready.” Leader sighed as Right-hand and Medic helped them walk to the awaiting bath. Leader had their arms slung over both their shoulders, their legs shaking as they walked. The rest of the team was hovering nearby, looking worried.
Leader hung their head, ashamed. They didn't want the team to see them like this. They were supposed to be the leader of the team, unstoppable, infallible and strong, not weak and hardly able to walk. How were the team supposed to take them seriously when they were so weak? They shuddered, cold rushing over them again. This was hell.
~~
Medic and Right-hand helped them slip from their sweat stained clothes, causing Leader to blush.
They didn't want help, they could undress themself. They weren’t a baby. But when they lowered Leader into the warm water, Leader sighed. They lay back, closing their eyes in bliss as their friends gently worked the dust out of their pores and hair, and breathing in the steam that cleared their sinuses a little.
The next thing minute, they were being wrapped in warm, fluffy towels and being slowly dried. It was so nice to not have to do anything and just… relax… The world stopped spinning as they were helped into their new, fresh clothes and practically carried back to bed. Their head nodded as they were carried, eyes fluttering in an effort to keep them open.
When they awoke again, it was dark and their chest was feeling slimy. They let out a wet cough, trying to sit, but they were so comfy and warm… they could afford to stay under the sheets for a few more minutes.
Medic peeked around the door, checking in. “I though I heard you wake up. How are you feeling?” Leader groaned, their throat hurt too much to try and speak and their arms were so heavy…
~~
“They keep passing out. Should we be worried?” Right-hand’s voice echoed somewhere over them. “Hmm, if they deteriorate any further, yes. I don’t want to upset them further, you know what they are like with hospitals.”
Right-hand hummed in agreement, their voice getting more and more distant. Leader tried calling out for Medic and Right-hand to help, managing to open their eyes briefly. All they could see was bright blur pass by their vision before their eyes slid shut.
“Nnhhghh…”
The blood suddenly drained from Leader’s face as the world faded from their vision. Right-hand’s eyes widened as Leader’s eyes rolled back and their head lolling to the side as they went limp. “Shit.” Medic shook Leader, trying to wake them, but it did nothing.
“Help me get them up.” Medic spoke suddenly, pressing a finger into Leader’s neck. Their eyes went wide. “Now Right-hand!” Medic barked at Right-hand making them jump, before they scooped Leader into their arms, rushing for the door. They carried their team leader out into the hallway, looking at Medic, who ushered them on. “Car, hospital, now!” They snapped, rushing to the barracks door and ripping it open.
The barracks were really small apartments that the teams lived in communally. Everyone got their own small room and shared a bathroom and kitchen. That meant that everyone hand seen what had just happened, glancing nervously at each other from across the apartment.
Throwing Leader into the back of their car, Right-hand raced over to the wheel, Medic climbing in the back with Leader. “Their pulse is shit, resps too. God dammit Right-hand drive!”
Leader managed to open their eyes, suddenly aware of sounds around them. They couldn’t hold them open for more than a few seconds, even though they could hear someone telling them to stay awake… They could have a little nap. Just a few minutes… they were so tired… they just…just a couple of minutes…
Leader hummed as they fell back into oblivion, feeling like the world had disappeared, replaced with a rollercoaster that was suddenly flying down a steep dip.
“No, no Leader, stay awake for me.” Medic begged, jostling Leader as they passed out again. Their body was radiating heat, they were flushed and sweating… Their heart was threatening to jump out of their chest and their breaths were faint and gasping. Medic began feeling sick as they looked at their friend in front of them, unable to do anything.
~~
Looking up at the sensation of the car stopping, they glanced out the window. They were here. The tension their backflipping stomach eased a little, at least Leader would now get some much needed medicine. Right-hand yanked Leader out of the back of the car and carried their body towards the door. Their head and limps dangled heavily, swaying with each movement of Right-hand. Medic was by their side in an instant, rushing forwards into the ER.
When they got in the door Medic was arguing with the receptionist, who’s jaw dropped when she saw the state Leader was in. Picking up a phone, she called someone, speaking quickly as she eyed Leader’s condition. Right-hand looked at Leader’s exposed neck, their muscles contracting with every breath. Usually, when they were sick, they out for the count for a week and then right as rain by the beginning of the next, maybe with a remaining sniffle. But this… judging by Medic’s reaction was worse than bad
Leader was deathly ill, and there wasn’t anything they could do.
They looked up at the sound of a stretcher being wheeled over, and a masked clad doctor muttered to Right-hand to put Leader on it. They carefully lay them down, watching as they were whisked away, an oxygen mask already slipped over their face. Medic came to their side, panting. “Come here…” They mumbled, pulling Right-hand into a hug.
They waited together as the rest of the team arrived, all looking pale and scared. The doctor came out to speak to them, Medic pulling them aside and talking in hushed voices. They nodded, coming over and taking a shake breath. “They’re okay.” The team let out a collective sigh, “But… they have a pretty brutal infection in their lungs, they’ll have to be kept under until the infection clears, and given the state of them right now, it’s gonna be a while.”
~~
Leader awoke, feeling strange but nice, so they kept their eyes shut, enjoying the fuzzy warm feeling washing over them. They could hear a beeping in the back of their mind. Medic but be hate watching another hospital drama. They sighed, thinking about how they would have to get out of their warm, comfy bed to drag them to their room and force them to sleep, trying to prevent them from ranting about how the surgeon had his stethoscope on backwards again.
They sighed, opening their eyes and looking around.
This didn’t look like their room… “Huh…?” They mumbled quietly. They coughed, reaching up to rub their throat. It felt like they had swallowed a cheese grater. A tug on their hand made them glance at it, and they froze.
“Medic… why is there an IV in my hand?” They whispered, voice hoarse and hollow. Medic sometimes liked to practice doing IV’s on Leader cause they apparently had ‘difficult veins’, but they didn’t remember giving Medic permission to…
It dawned on Leader where they were when a nurse walked over. “Hi.” She whispered. “I’m Jane, I’m your nurse. We thought you’d be awake soon.” Leader stared at Jane’s face, blurring in and out of focus as they sank back into the bed, hoping it would consume them.
“Your friend said you might not be having such a great time when you wake up, but that’s okay. If you want anything, just call me by pressing this.” Jane placed a button in Leader’s hand. “You’ve been very sick. Do you understand?” Leader blinked, thinking over her words. “Sick?” They tried asking, but their voice could only croak.
Jane smiled, exhaling softly through her nose. “Yes. You’ve been very sick. They put you on a ventilator until your infection cleared up. You’ll have to hang out for a few more days, but then we can let you go home.” Leader felt their stomach sink. “How… long…?” Jane patted Leader’s shoulder. “Apparently you were pretty sick for two days before you were brought in. You were on the ventilator for a week.” Leader nodded, half understanding those words, right now they wanted nothing more than to sleep and pretend they weren’t in hospital. That way they could go home…
They blinked a few times, tiredly, before jumping slightly. Jane had been replaced with their team, all sitting silently, waiting for them to wake up. But they hadn’t even slept? Jane the nurse was with them two seconds ago?
“Wait… where’s the nurse?” They rasped looking around for her. “What are you talking about Leader?” Medic chuckled, “You’ve been asleep all day.” Leader blinked in surprise, looking at their team. They felt fine, so they sat up, only for a headache to immediately set in.
Groaning, they lay back down. “Take it easy.” Medic murmured, placing a comforting hand on Leader’s shoulder. They could feel Medic’s fingers squeeze them gently, sighing as they closed their eyes. “I feel… like shit…” They croaked.
The team all smirked, “Yeah, that figures.” Right-hand muttered.
“Well, glad to see you on the mend Leader, oh and… I thought you’d like to know, you’ve been selected to lead the raid on the plant. The higher ups like the idea so much that they want you in charge. When you're better, of course.” Leader felt a zing, they had been hoping that would happen.
They grinned, the nasal cannula on their nose slipping a little. They hadn’t realised it was even there. Pushing it back up they looked up at Right-hand with renewed vigour. “Well, that’s all the motivation I need.” They glanced at an alarmed looking Medic. “You better help me rest up. I wanna be ready for this.”
Medic’s shoulders dropped with relief, “Anything you need, Leader, you just let me know.” Leader chucked, “Good… Now fuck off so I can sleep…” They groaned, getting comfy.
They pulled their blankets up higher, shutting their eyes and sighing. Maybe hospital wasn’t going to be so bad after all.

Invert sugar anon here, I have to look for natural anyway cause artificial colors and flavors also trigger my IBD lol. My confusion with invert sugar is that like, honey, which I've read is an invert sugar is fine, simple syrup is fine, but like products that had sucrose before that have switched over to invert sugar have gone from fine to super not fine, with no other changes in ingredients. So my question, which you may not know the answer to, really is, why do some invert sugars seem to be okay and others not? Is there a difference or is my body just continuing to be as annoying as it possibly can?
Hmm, honestly my first thought as someone who deals with a lot of food stuff and "safe" foods suddenly being not safe is that it's not JUST that invert sugar has been added, but that somewhere in the process something else has been added as well or one ingredient has been purchased from a different manufacturer or something like that, and if it's not consistent across different brands of invert sugars and you don't have any allergies that could be acting up, it might not be the invert sugar that's causing the problem.
If it were me, that's something I'd test with a food challenge and try to control for all other variables to make sure that it really was that specific food I was reacting to and then I'd compare ingredients in that food to other foods and test the other foods to see if the reaction was the same. It's frustrating with gut stuff because sometimes it's hard to figure out what the actual food source/food trigger was because by the time you start reacting to something it's probably been a LOT of time (remember it takes two to five days for your body to completely digest and eliminate food; are you reacting to something you ate six hours ago, or are you reacting to something you ate a day and a half ago?)
I'm sure you know your body and have probably thought about all of that, but bodies are weird and there are a lot of moving parts and it's hard to eliminate this stuff. Are you having problems with invert sugar on days when you've eaten a lot of fruit? Do the problems persist when you haven't had any fruit? Are you having more problems with invert sugars when you're mid-flare? Do they bring on a flare?
IDK, it's hard to test and I know that because I've spent a ton of time trying to do the same thing for my allergens and it's a headache and a half (literally. Accidentally eating corn hurts so much).
But if you've identified an ingredient that you're certain is causing problems, avoid it. Industrial inverted sugar syrup isn't going to be the same chemically as honey (honey crystallizes after all, invert sugar syrup doesn't) so even though they share some properties maybe one is safe for you when the other isn't.
