Mini-review:

This certainly lives up to its title: the tension slowly builds and builds until all hell breaks loose during the final act. I'm a huge fan of long/single takes, and this movie makes the most of that format. It's amazing how every single second matters in some way or another, regardless of how unimportant or casual it may seem. And of course, pulling off a 90-minute long take means both cast and crew are firing on all cylinders. I can't even begin to imagine how many hours of rehearsals and work went into making Boiling Point, but I hope they know it was absolutely worth it.

Any surprise FBI?

The FBI is abusing its security clearance process to “purge” political conservatives from the bureau, according to recent whistleblower disclosures reviewed by The Post. The federal law enforcement agency’s Security Division has been suspending or revoking clearances for employees whose political affiliation or COVID-19 vaccination status are suspect, a supervisory special agent who formerly worked in the division alleges. The unnamed agent, who is described as “a registered Democrat” and is represented by the nonprofit Empower Oversight, further claims that high-ranking officials in the division believed “if an FBI employee fit a certain profile as a political conservative, they were viewed as security concerns and unworthy to work at the FBI.”*** “Over the last few years, the FBI has used the clearance process as a means to force employees out of the FBI by inflicting severe financial distress: suspending their clearance, suspending them from duty without pay, requiring them to obtain permission to take any other job while stuck in this unpaid limbo, and delaying their final clearance adjudication indefinitely — even years,” he told House Judiciary Committee chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and ranking member Jerry Nadler (D-NY), Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and ranking member Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Whistleblower Caucus chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and vice chairman Ron Wyden (R-Ore.).***

A boozed up passenger forced an American Airlines flight to make an emergency landing in Buffalo after he was caught exposing himself and urinating in the aisle of the airplane, federal prosecutors said.

Oregon native Neil McCarthy, 25, admitted to cops that he was “flicking the bean” — a euphemism for masturbating — aboard the flight to New Hampshire Wednesday, and blamed it on a medical urination problem, court papers allege.***

A tranquil summer afternoon at the upscale Fashion Island mall in Newport Beach disintegrated into violence Tuesday, with a woman killed after a botched robbery attempt. Two men accosted the 68-year-old tourist and her husband near the Barnes & Noble bookstore at the mall, authorities said. Shots were fired, but police said no one was struck by bullets. The woman was identified as Patricia McKay, who was visiting from New Zealand, the Newport Beach Police Department announced Wednesday in a news release.*** The couple had been walking at Fashion Island when they were approached by two men who attempted to rob them, according to Police Sgt. Steven Oberon. A struggle ensued, and McKay was dragged into a parking lot and subsequently run over by a white Toyota Camry driven by a third suspect, police said. There were no other reported injuries. Heather Rangel, a Newport Beach Police Department spokesperson, said the gun was fired three times but no one was struck. Police declined to say which of the suspects fired the gun or drove the car, citing the ongoing investigation. After the incident, police pursued the three men into Los Angeles County. Authorities reported that the Camry reached speeds of up to 110 mph as it sped north. A television news helicopter captured video of the car speeding on the left shoulder of the 105 Freeway and at one point grazing the concrete center median.*** Authorities identified the suspects as 26-year-old Leroyernest Joseph McCrary of Compton; 18-year-old Jaden Cunningham of Lancaster; and 18-year-old Malachi Edward Darnell of Los Angeles. All three were booked on suspicion of homicide, robbery with a firearm and conspiracy.*** McCrary, who also goes by the name LeRoy Ernest McCrary, has a history of crimes in L.A. County. He was arrested and charged in October 2022 with being a narcotics addict in possession of a firearm, a felony. He pleaded no contest to that felony charge the October of the following year. McCrary also was charged in a robbery case in September 2023 and pleaded no contest. He received a concurrent sentence for both convictions and got two years of probation and three years in state prison, with the sentence suspended.*** “This doesn’t happen in Newport Beach,” Mayor Will O’Neill told KCAL-TV News. “Fashion Island is an incredibly safe place. This is a tragedy, and I’m furious.”

OXFORD, Miss. -- A former engineer at a U.S. military air logistics center has been charged with making false statements and obstructing justice during the criminal investigation into a 2017 military plane crash in Mississippi that killed all 16 service members aboard, prosecutors said Wednesday. James Michael Fisher, 67, was arrested Tuesday after a federal grand jury in northern Mississippi indicted him, according to a news release from U.S. Attorney Clay Joyner. The release said Fisher is a former lead propulsion engineer at the Warner Robins Air Logistics Complex in Warner Robins, Georgia. Fisher, who now lives in Portugal, made an initial court appearance in Jacksonville, Florida.*** Fifteen Marines and one Navy corpsman were killed July 10, 2017, when the Marine Corps KC-130T transport plane broke into pieces in the sky and slammed into a soybean field near Itta Bena, Mississippi.*** The indictment alleges Fisher knowingly concealed engineering documents and made false statements to investigators about his engineering decisions that might have been related to the crash, according to the news release from Joyner.***

After five homicides in the first five days of July, Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin on Friday said that lives are being lost over the most “petty and trivial” of issues.*** Those who lost lives are more than numbers and stats, he said. “These are real people who were tragically taken away from grieving families – the families that are now left to pick up the broken pieces. It’s not fair to them. They deserve justice.” To that end, investigations are underway in each of the five homicides that began the month:

One of these homicides occurred over an argument. Two men who knew each other were walking outside together when their argument escalated. Both pulled guns out.

One of these homicides occurred inside an apartment. Both suspect and victim were together to conduct an illegal transaction.

One of these homicides occurred as a result of the victim having multiple feuds with others.

“Enough with arguing over petty stuff. Stop trying to live out your TV fantasies by attempting to rob drug dealers,” the mayor said. “End the needless retaliation that creates a never-ending cycle of back and forth. Watch who you hang with. Control your behavior. Know when to walk away.”***

[Pueblo, Colorado police] Officers responded to a call of shots fired in the 1700 block of Constitution Road around 10:15 a.m. on Sunday, according to a Sunday evening news release from the Pueblo Police Department. A man and his child were searching for the child’s stolen bicycle when they found it in front of a residential building, according to police. The man confronted the residents and “a disturbance occurred,” the release said. The child, whose age was not disclosed, was shot and taken to a hospital with minor injuries, the department said. A person barricaded themselves inside the residence and the Pueblo Police Department SWAT team was called, according to the release.***

A $500 million fine isn’t enough for a company that murdered 346 people, Joe Nocera argues.

***Late Sunday night, faced with the possibility of a trial, Boeing agreed to a settlement offered by the Department of Justice, pleading guilty to a felony for the two 737 Max crashes in 2018 and 2019 that caused the death of 346 passengers and crew. The felony charge comes with a probationary period of three years and a fine of nearly $500 million. Boeing has also agreed to invest $455 million to bolster its safety and compliance programs and accept the oversight of an independent compliance monitor who will submit annual reports to the government. And board members will be required to meet with families of the victims. The Justice Department will no doubt characterize the settlement as just punishment for a recidivist company. Don’t believe it. This is a company that murdered those 346 people as surely as if it had lined them up against a wall and shot them. There was no pilot error involved in those crashes, nor was it the result of some unlucky accident. Those planes crashed because Boeing had cut so many corners in rushing this new 737 model to the marketplace that a disaster was inevitable. As one engineer memorably put it in an email to a colleague: “This airplane was designed by clowns, who in turn are supervised by monkeys.”*** “I’m ashamed to see that this is our justice system at work,” Ed Pierson, a Boeing whistleblower who has since founded the Foundation for Aviation Safety, told me yesterday afternoon. “It provides zero accountability. The executives who pressured employees to take shortcuts—they’re culpable. This settlement is allowing individuals who have acted criminally to walk away.” And that’s the larger point. The Justice Department seems to believe it’s meaningful to charge a company with a felony. But it’s not. Companies don’t commit felonies—people do. And if people aren’t held responsible—and sent to prison when necessary—then they’ll never have the incentive they need to change.  You want to fix Boeing? Then prosecute its executives. There is nothing like the prospect of prison to focus the mind.
