Steve as everyone’s favorite stray dog. Let me explain.

Eddie is pretty confused whenever he shows up to his new sheepie’s houses and Steve Harrington is there for some reason. He’s caught him napping on the Beyer’s couch, in the Wheeler’s basement, eating at the Sinclair’s dinner table. Hopper drives by in his cruiser and Steve’s in the front seat. He’s sitting on the Mayfield’s steps with Max. He’s driving around band geek Buckley to get groceries. Does this guy ever go home?

So of course Eddie asks. He really didn’t expect Steve’s answer.

“Oh, my dad kicked me out when I was 14,” he says simply. “Changed the locks and everything.”

“What?” Eddie gapes at him. “Why?!”

“Dude, if only I could tell you! Man had a temper.” Steve shrugs, like he’s talking about the weather. “But whatever, I liked it better afterwards.” And he talks about all the families in town that let him stay with them, Christmases with strangers who become friends, a freedom where most people would find uncertainty.

If Eddie tilts his head just right, he can kind of get it. But, the security of a home, of family is something he could never give up.

Anyways that’s how Steve practically moves in with the Munson’s.

it mal du pays to be mal du pays

I have a habit of imagining ways that act 5 could have gone differently, and in doing that I ended up coming up with this AU. Basically, Siffrin is a ghost, and he and Mal du Pays are following the party and occasionally helping them out from behind the scenes as they deal with the aftermath.

During the fight against Mal du Pays in act 5, the rest of the party doesn’t make it in time, and Siffrin gives up on his wish and kind of just. Dies. For real this time. Mal du Pays takes form, and then it finishes off the King itself and runs off right before the party arrives to see what’s left. It ends up encountering Siffrin who is now a ghost, and starts following them around, so I guess they’ll be watching the rest of the party together now.

Mal du Pays is… More tame in this AU? Still a little shit, but not as much now that it actually took form. It’ll say some stuff that Siffrin would definitely not take well, but it’s not necessarily being intentionally malicious, it’s just in its nature as a Sadness. Like how a cat doesn’t shred furniture to be mean, it’s just a cat. Still sucks though. Since “homesickness” is the feeling at its core, it often becomes fixated on anything potentially related to “home”, and since family was also like “home” to Siffrin but still felt impossible to keep, this resulted in Mal’s interest in the rest of the party and its unwillingness to attack them and only them… and also its clinginess. The damned thing will not go away.

Siffrin is still very much coming down from the act 5 shitstorm at the start. They didn’t learn to talk about their problems, and they’re still under the impression that their family hates them. And on top of that, he’s actually genuinely dead now! He can see through himself, he always seems to glow a little, and he has to concentrate just to pick something up. Eventually some of these problems will improve, either through practice or by observing his family, but it’s definitely a lot to recover from and adjust to… And it’ll take awhile since he’s also gotta keep the Sadness he created from attacking strangers and deal with the stuff it pulls on him.

The rest of the party is still dealing with the aftermath, and have no clue they’re being watched (yet). Loop sort of joins the group in Siffrin’s place, and there’s a lot of 2hats-related issues from that (the whole situation is complicated, they didn’t even want to be there but stardust had to go and die and… oh. Maybe they still have a place among them as someone else? Cue the spiral of internal conflict). Lots of pain and suffering to go around, but I promise it’s not all just misery!! There’s some shenanigans, comfort, and even some fluff mixed in there! I swear! In fact there’s a pretty good amount of shenanigans. An actor joins the stage crew… Chaos may ensue hehehe

i'm running off of five hours of mediocre sleep and the update is in three hours, but i wanted to get one last Excessively Long Skaterlight Cornplating Post out before then

like most popular ships (unfortunately), i see skaterlight get misinterpreted for the sake of whatever narrative the fandom wants to run with CONSTANTLY. the narrative that the fandom has created surrounding skaterlight is essentially "kasper got sick and became infected, leaving lampert alone and without his only friend". on the surface it seems accurate to canon, but there's a very specific pitfall that people fall into that warps it. namely, that lampert is the "victim" in the scenario. people portray kasper/infected as if he was the one who left lampert behind, when in reality, it's the other way around.

infected still very much wants to be friends with lampert, and according to the devs, they still are friends to an extent. it's just that his illness and lampert's ocd are a match made in hell, which led to lampert pushing him away.

another minor yet common misconception seems to be that infected is completely oblivious to the fact that lampert doesn't want to be near him. while yes, his illness has weakened his grip on reality, it's clear from his interactions both with lampert and with other npcs that he is cognizant of the fact that lampert doesn't want him around, and heartbreakingly, that whatever is causing it is most likely his fault.

by the time melanie was added to the game, infected seems to have internalized the idea that lampert truly does want nothing to do with him, turning down her offer to hang out with her and lampert because he knows that lampert doesn't want to be near him.

despite his illness eating away at his psyche, infected still DEEPLY cares about lampert, to the point where even though he doesn't recognize his past self, he can't bring himself to get rid of the "i'm with stupid" picture for a reason that he's unable to comprehend.

we know now that he ended up donating the shirt to toolbox thrift, but i sincerely doubt that it was because he doesn't care about lampert anymore. i think he either doesn't remember why he had it, has accepted that they aren't friends anymore, or possibly a mix of both.

on lampert's end, he's consistently hostile to infected, but whenever he isn't talking to him directly, he's mourning the loss of what they had together.

he still cares about their friendship and feels sympathy for infected's situation, but he only expresses it when infected isn't there.

lampert's biggest flaw as a person is that he will always choose inaction in response to something difficult. both folly and null call him out on this: folly calls out his habit of pushing others away, while null calls him out on the fact that he chooses to be a useless bum despite having the free will to do otherwise.

this is extremely important to note: the game consistently portrays lampert's self-imposed isolation as a BAD THING. it's sympathetic to his reasons, but it does not excuse them. the picture it's trying to paint is fairly clear: while he didn't do it with malicious intent, lampert genuinely hurt infected by abandoning him, and likely contributed to him becoming even more withdrawn as even his best friend started treating him like garbage for reasons that his illness keeps him from understanding. all he knows is that he did something to make lampert dislike him. infected is sick, but he isn't braindead.

it's honestly interesting how easily the fandom fell for lampert's self-victimization. they read all of his dialogue about how sad he is that kasper is "gone" and went: "wow, that's so fucked up. that's so sad." which, yes, it is fucked up and sad, but people are all too willing to ignore that lampert isn't innocent in all of this. he had nothing to do with the virus, and from what we know currently it doesn't seem like there's much he can do to actually help with that, but people are all too willing to ignore how cruel what he did (and is still doing) is. he abandoned his best friend when he needed him most, and is now acting like he's the one suffering when he isn't even the one having his mind and psyche eaten away by a parasite.

this is getting into red ball of falseness territory, but it's honestly interesting how closely lampert's treatment of infected resembles the very common real life occurrence of people abandoning someone close to them, whether it be a friend or significant other, because they became sick or disabled in a way that made them an "inconvenience". i'm not sure if this was the intention, especially given my own apprehension about how regretevator tends to handle topics related to disability (pestgate will haunt me forever), but the knowledge that this is something that constantly happens to disabled people in real life just makes it all the more upsetting.

tldr, i'm tired of people woobifying lampert and acting like he did nothing wrong, and even prioritizing his emotional hurt over the suffering of the man who is being eaten alive by a parasite, ostracized by everyone around him, and left in danger of eviction due to his illness. is this an indication of how people view non-romanticized disabilities, or is it just a case of people not being willing to interact with the text beyond a surface level understanding?? have i created some kind of "yeucc and catjam who never thought of any of that" scenario?? who knows.

when the update drops in a couple hours, i can only hope that they continue down this path instead of falling into the same traps that the fandom does. the moral complexity of what happened between lampert and infected is what makes them so interesting to me, and i would HATE for their relationship to be reduced to angst fodder for lampert instead of something that's effecting them equally. not only would it do infected a massive disservice as a character, but also because it would have some worrying implications about how the writers view friendships with disabled people. one of my greatest fears is that infected is somehow demonized for getting sick, or it's made to seem like it was "his fault" and that he "deserved it" or something. i could be worried about nothing but, again, these are the same devs who once described a cluster-b character as "evil as fuck". i know they apologized and have been trying to do better, but i think i've earned some apprehension. hopefully, they prove me wrong.

maybe the real skaterlight will be the friends we made along the way.
