Magneto/Charles Xavier Casting

To be honest, I'm not especially invested in the MCU, or in superhero movies in general. I think they're cool, and I'm glad they get more people interested in the comics (and acknowledge they affect comic happenings for better or worse.) I get why people enjoy them, I just don't have the attention span (or physical setup) to sit in one place doing one thing for 2 hours. Probably the ADHD.

The anxiety doesn't help either.

However, there's certain characters I'm particularly invested in and would be delighted if they were done right on TV or in movies. Dr DOOM is one, though recent developments have lowered my expectations. Magneto is another, which means Charles Xavier/Professor X is as well. They're too intertwined to have one without the other, except in special circumstances.

NGL, I'd be one of these kids.

A thought that's been percolating in my brain bag for a few weeks now is something I deem an essential element for any casting choice - how much subtext and emotion they can fit into the phrase 'old friend.'

It says so much, and thankfully it's used sparingly so it retains the gravitas. Threat, flirtation, mockery, genuine adoration, love, hate, challenge, longing, frustration. If I were casting that's where I'd start - it's just so central to their relationship and interactions. It tells us so much and does the same for characters observing them.

Look at these naked, old, beautiful disasters. Gotta love em. Emma certainly doesn't, but she's kinda justified. Old friends.

I understand this is rich coming from me given who my Star Wars fave is, but why is it their attempts to diversify the galaxy far far away seem to start at the villains an inordinate amount of the time? Aphra herself is debatably the highest profile LGBT character in Star Wars and not only is she an amoral (in the comic’s own words) flaming trash compactor of a person but her girlfriend is an officer in the galactic empire. And was there really anyone who looked at Grand Moff Tarkin being revealed to be gay and thought ‘ah yes, a true triumph for diversity.’ I’m just saying when it came time for pride month all the comics got variant covers featuring the lgbt characters and the Obi Wan Kenobi comic had to borrow one from Aphra’s supporting cast, and that character was themselves something of a cultist serial killer.
