And so, to please the woodpecker – and some of his friends on tumblr who expressed a wish to see him do the tap-away (and who Algy rather suspected thought he couldn't do it…) – Algy hopped up onto a branch as night was falling, and commenced to tap away by the light of his magical pumpkin lantern, singing:
“I just flapped away And I tapped away I went this-a-way A bit up-a-way And then that-a-way. I spent half the day Over there a way; So the folk all heard ’Bout the fluffy bird And came this-a-way Doing the tap-a-way…"
[Algy is singing - and performing – a passage from his children's chapter book The Magical Midwinter Star, which will be reissued with a new cover in paperback this coming weekend, 14th/15th December 2024 and is currently available as a Kindle e-book.]
For further details of the tap-away please see Algy's previous adventure.

The Banham Family Magic Lantern Collection. From the auction description:
Of Franklin Expedition and Polar Interest. Thirty-two slides in original box, probably assembled from several sets on Arctic expeditions including those led by Parry and the 'Franklin search'. Single hand-painted glass slides in wooden frames 6 7/8 x 3 3/4 x 3/8 inches.
There are dozens of images, and I recognise some of them from classic polar exploration books like Voyage of the 'Fox' and Parry's narratives. Otherworldly, glowing colours bring the scenes to life.

'Moonlight in the Arctic Regions', 'Parry's First Meeting with the [Inuit]', 'A Magnetic Observatory', ships overwintering, and 'Funeral On The Ice' for an unnamed British subject.

I barely made it in time but UPDATE! I can’t believe I made it this far. I’ve been aching to get to Rosy Hours for so long it’s a little concerning.
Also I gave Raoul some pants.

Algy was so exhausted from his aerial battle with the storm that although he had nothing but the freezing, snow-covered ground for a bed, he slept late the next morning, curled up around his magic pumpkin, which had been so miraculously preserved, despite his conviction that he had dropped it during his arduous flight.
In fact, Algy slept very late indeed… so much so that he could only fly onward a short distance on the next day before the dim midwinter light began to fade into dusk once again.
But as Algy came in to land, and rested on the ground beneath a tree, before settling onto a more suitable perch for the night, it seemed to him that the fading landscape looked strangely familiar. He felt rather excited, but knew that he would have to be patient and wait until the next day, for it would shortly be dark once again, and there was no time left to explore before nightfall.
As he looked up at the sky he guessed that it might very possibly snow again before long, and when a local buzzard mewed overhead as it made its way home for the night, Algy was reminded of a poem, and wondered whether there could indeed be another storm on the way:
No hawk hangs over in this air: The urgent snow is everywhere. The wing adroiter than a sail Must lean away from such a gale, Abandoning its straight intent, Or else expose tough ligament And tender flesh to what before Meant dampened feathers, nothing more. Forceless upon our backs there fall Infrequent flakes hexagonal, Devised in many a curious style To charm our safety for a while, Where close to earth like mice we go Under the horizontal snow.
[Algy is thinking of the poem The Snow Storm by the 20th century American poet Edna St. Vincent Millay.]

The Magic Lantern by Auguste Edouart ca. 1835, made with cut paper and ink wash.
Description by the Met Museum:
One of the most proficient silhouette artists of the nineteenth century, Auguste Edouart discovered his skill at paper cutting only after resigning his post in Napoleon's defeated army and moving to England. He delighted in showing off his abilities by representing a range of ages and social types, as in this complex composition featuring three generations of one family, together with their servants and pet dog. A "Galantee" showman performs a magic lantern show-in which images painted on glass are projected onto a screen through an illuminated lens-while an old man with a wooden leg provides musical accompaniment on a barrel organ. The cut figures are set within an elaborate curtained interior painted in sepia.
Although the figures are silhouettes, they are unmistakably Romantic.

God I love being an animation nut it allows me to bring in who I call Louise and Jacques as they never had official names and explain they are the oldest animated characters still alive in the cartoon meets reality world.
Tumblr media
They are from the 1870s. However, what throws people for a loop is the factor they are the only animated characters not to be animated on celluloid,
Tumblr media
As they were animated via rubber strips instead, with cutouts in them illuminated by this old piece of technology known as a Magic Lantern you have enough of those in sequence with each other add in a background and you had animation
Tumblr media
However with the invention of celluloid this was quickly phased out it's why they are the only two characters to have been made this way,
But the fact that I get people in disbelief saying there's no way all animation was on Celluloid and I get to sit there like a smug cat because nope theres 2 of em that were on Rubber.
I love Louise and Jacque, since they were made by a French man I pictured they live over in Paris and typically can be found around the Louve they're the old couple that have been through everything so they're just relaxing, the Goverment taking care of them as Cultural Heritage Toons since they hold the record of being the very first Toons to hop off the film reel.
