Note
hi Dani it was my birthday today. turned 17. but i can't seem to just muster up any enthusiasm. i used to be so excited about my birthday but today I was just not. i even cried today. this is gonna sound weird but i didn't even know why I was crying. i don't know what triggered it but I just started crying and then I was trying to hide it from my parents and my nose turns red when I cry so I was trying to run it so that the redness is gone 😂 this is so strange and i just wish something exciting happened and I could also be happy about my birthday like other people. it was so mundane. i didn't even get a cake. then I went and read the last chapter of lbaf 5. i have an unhealthy obsession with that chapter because i just love other magnus. dark magnus has been something i really wished you'd write because I love your style of writing my favourite tsc characters. so I read it again for the 100th time and loved it again and can't wait for other magnus content.
Happy happy birthday to you!
I myself like mundane birthdays, but I get what you mean. Som birthdays are more special than others, but we must cherish every one of them.
Also, someone once told me crying on your birthday is tradition because we did come into this world crying after all 🤭
I put away my laptop (doing this new thing where I close my laptop and put it away by 10.30) but I opened it back up just for you. I hope it makes you feel a little special today.
A little birthday treat:
“Hermes, perhaps this is a concern for later,” Rafael interjected carefully.
“Back off, Rafael. Hermes is right to be worried,” Max, the other one, growled in response. “Hermes, what do we do?”
“I only meant we have bigger problems to handle right now,” Rafael replied in frustration, shooting a glare at the blue warlock. “It’s just bapak, Max. We can handle him.”
Hermes, who had been sending warlock signals left and right, paused mid-motion and stared at Rafael. “You really don’t get it, do you?”
“I refuse to believe that my father is capable of the evil you’re describing,” Rafael insisted, giving Max a fierce look. “He’s a good man, Hermes. You know he is.”
Hermes’s gaze hardened. “Do you realize what the biggest threat to your Clave is right now?” He didn’t wait for an answer, watching as Rafael blinked at the shift in topic. “It’s not Lucifer. It’s not the Prince of Darkness. It’s not the Resurrected. It’s a random woman in Paris who’s ready to weaponize the Council just to get what she wants.”
Rafael clenched his jaw. “I can handle Madeleine.”
“Can you?” Hermes scoffed. “Madeleine Bellefleur is a good person gone bad. People like her, Consul—they’ve got nothing to lose.”
The warlock moved closer and Rafael saw it then. The fear in his eyes. He doesn’t think he’s ever seen Hermes scared before.
“Magnus is good, Rafael. He is as good as a person can get and he’s fought beside us as long as I can remember,” Hermes told him quietly. “I do not wish to find out what it's like to fight against him. It will be the end of us all.”

Here we go.
Tumblr media
On page 4, Clary gives Simon this as the reason for her trip to Idris, which is ridiculous because what does that got to do with anything? My notes read: “OR maybe he’ll trust you because you are Jocelyn’s daughter??”
Then on page 8 Clary tells the following to Jace who is trying to persuade Clary to not go:
Tumblr media
Which is entirely logical, but pray tell, why on earth does Clary say anything like “looking so much like” Jocelyn to Simon when Madeleine has already told Ragnor to expect Jocelyn’s daughter? (who does look a lot like her, yes)
Why must the reasons for the trip be explained twice with different reasoning, and why am I already confused?
Tumblr media
The first clause stands perfectly well on its own without any additional explaining, i.e. hand-holding. As if the meaning is evident from the glance that was shot and the words following said glance.
Tumblr media
Clary and Jace’s siblinghood has been incredibly over-pronounced, especially in the previous book. No other siblings constantly remind the readers that they are, indeed, siblings. Almost like the writing would reeaally like the readers to believe that they are related to each other...
Tumblr media
No comma, still the same subject. We were doing so great till the page 9.
Tumblr media
How to Make Your Characters More Sympathetic: Being Grateful for Minor Tangential Things While Otherwise Being Ungrateful About a Lot of Other, Often More Significant Things - A Guide for Better Characterization
Clary going to Idris and Luke not liking it is no reason for him to withhold his care nor hold it hostage. This is a nonissue.
Tumblr media
Again, participle phrases signal concurrency, that two or more things are happening at the same time. Clary can’t tear through the paper and seize something soft at the same time.
→ “Clary tore though it. Her hand seized on something soft...”
Tumblr media
Orange arrows are pointing towards two clauses that are separated with a comma from the main clause. Comma, however, in these cases comes after “or” only if is followed by an independent clause, which neither of these are.
The pink arrow, just no.
Tumblr media
“You look beautiful, Clary.” “It suits you wonderfully, Clary.” “It truly draws out your best features, Clary.” Literally any other answer than this dark moody-broody bullshit that has got nothing to do with Clary and how she looks in the cloak. Luke bought Clary the coat/cloak because he saw it and he thought of her. Yet now, as Luke has said this, it seems like it only actually reminded him of Jocelyn and Clary acts as a proxy to her. Or that Clary’s similarity to her mother makes Luke treat Clary as a reminder of Jocelyn.
About Clary wanting Simon to go back to normal: On page two it is said that
“They’d only called off their attempt at a romantic relationship last week, and she still felt confused whenever she saw him.”
First of all, it was more Simon’s attempt rather than both of theirs. Secondly, Simon’s “normal” was always being in love with Clary. Clary is still confused about their relationship. Simon should be allowed to deal with his feelings too, in addition to those of dying and turning into a vampire, especially without Clary just wanting things easier for herself.
Though Clary wanting normality and familiarity back in her life is understandable, it is also a bit egocentric and leaves Simon’s feelings out of it.
Tumblr media
→ “...when he heard several familiar voices nearby.”
Tumblr media
→ “He didn’t have to elaborate on what he meant. Jace’s face told Simon that he remembered.” (END)
What else could they possibly be remembering? It is a basic assumption that by the third book the reader has read previous parts of the story and is able to recall such a major event without these recaps shoved in.
Tumblr media
No, if you like to support men’s healthy emotional life.
Tumblr media
Maybe you could if Jace ever shared his plans with them instead of keeping them to himself and assuming without even trying. Maybe if he then discussed it, planned it, talked it out, he could at least say he tried to keep Clary’s abilities secret.
Jace’s faith in Clary is also outstanding. She apparently has no potential even with training. Also, are you talking about the same Clary who is shoving herself into every fight and battle without any training still? Yeah, why on earth would she want to be a fighter.
Additionally, while Jace and Simon are planning and deciding everything for Clary behind her back, has either of them even thought to ask her what she might want for herself? Or is she too ignorant to decide whether she wants official training?
Tumblr media
Oh, shut up, Simon. Everyone knows that for once Jace meddling into Clary’s business is not about that. I also don’t think Clary is aware that she is in desperate need of help, Jace just decided that on his own.
Tumblr media
The brown part highlights a sentence that has no main verb (to perform an action).
→ “Simon hesitated. Before he could respond, a noise split the silence between them—a high, shrieking cry, terrible in its desperation and worse...”
Also who said the last line?  → ““What was that?” Jace said, whirling around.”
Tumblr media
Abominable comma. The cries and the clangs are both performing the same action.
→ “The single shriek was joined by other cries and a harsh clang that...”
Tumblr media
Before me is chaos.
→ “A white mist blanketed the garden. There was a heavy smell in the air—the sharp tang of ozone and something sweet and unpleasant under it.”
I’d either scrap the sentence underlined with yellow (because it pauses the action) or tie it together with the previous sentence. For instance:
→ “He glimpsed Isabelle, her hair snapping around her in black ropes as she swung her whip that made a deadly fork of golden lightning through the shadows.”
Besides emphasis, em dashes in the middle of a sentence can be used to give additional information that is not essential to understand the rest of the sentence. It is a break in a sentence that already stands and is understood on its own. Yet here the sentence without Simon’s additional information would be:
“She was fending off the advance of something lumbering and huge, but it was full daylight; that was impossible.” Which doesn’t make sense at all. In addition to punctuation, some things need switching around:
→ “She was fending off the advance of something lumbering and huge—a demon, Simon thought. But that was impossible; it was full daylight.” or
→ “She was fending off the advance of something lumbering and huge. A demon, Simon thought, but that was impossible; it was full daylight.”
→ “It swung a thick wooden plank (it carried in one hand) at Isabelle almost blindly.”
Tumblr media
→ “...back and forth inside it. Simon felt as if he were...”
→ “Isabelle has vanished. He saw Alec, his arm bleeding...” (no semicolon because the clauses aren’t closely related.)
→ “...a blade in each hand. He leaped into the air..”
→ “...with a vicious scissoring movement. The Forsaken’s head tumbled...”
Most of the action taking place in this scene is filtered through Simon. Simon sees this, Simon feels that etc. Since we already do know that Simon is the observer:
→ “The Shadowhunters were calling to one another out of the mist...”
→ “Suddenly the mist cleared. Magnus was standing wild-eyed by the wall...”
→ “...blue lightning sparking between them. Against the wall...”
Tumblr media
Ave Atque Vale, Madeleine. You served your relevant-for-only-one-thing purpose as best you could.
Tumblr media
I’m sensing a trend regarding em dashes in this chapter.

TSC READING UPDATE
City of Ashes Log #6
chapters finished: 20/20 (epilogue included)
Chapter 17:
Magnus can make a car fly?!?!?
Imogen, it was obvious valentine wasn’t going to take the deal
Luke and magnus’s friendship needs more attention
Ooooh, clary killed a demon
Ok, so why didn’t someone offer to help Magnus???? I know clary was taken but Magnus is an important part of the plan
I actually love Maryse. She’s so intimidating
Alec’s like: “well, so about that. Jace is already free”
Chapter 18:
I agree w/ clary. The worst part of rollercoasters is the stomach dropping feeling
Maia, Simon can’t be dead unless staked or exposed to sun.... right???
Jace with a fearless rune scares me
Sorry Luke. Teens are a pain in the ass
Clary, I love you and Simon but technically you wouldn’t be able to tell if he was dead. you’re not parabati (*wink wink*)
You go Clary!!! Spit at his feet.
Damn!!! Throwing a dagger so hard it decapitated a demon AND saved like?!? Jace, you are on fire today.
Valentine, quoting the Bible isn’t going to make clary more sympathetic to your “cause”
yeah, it’s jace not jonathan. I hate when people call him that
So wait??? what did imogen say to jace?
Alec?!?!?! what is it with you and near death experiences
Chapter 19:
I love how clary constantly defends Luke
See, Alec IS alive
Poor Magnus! He’s exhausted
Alec’s lines to Magnus always make me want to cry! He’s always so genuine
Yes jace, you’re not like valentine. Now kill agramon
I never even thought about how much getting your throat slit would hurt
Jace giving Simon his blood!!! Do I sense a bromance?!?!
Clary burned a ship w/ a rune
Simon is a freaking Daylighter!!!
Maryse is Jace’s mom. End of story
“You were wrong that I never sang it to you,” she said. “It’s just that you never heard me.” Stop trying time make me cry
Epilogue:
Wait? Clary and Simon are still dating? I thought they broke up after the seelie court??
Oooh never mind. They just broke up
Simon and Maia?? That’s kinda cute
Jocelyn and Luke are super cute! Even though I just want them to be together so Luke is happy
I’m still kinda mad that Jocelyn lied about the shadow world but whatever
Maryse cuts jace’s hair? That’s cute!
Clary, you’re upset that jace wants to JUST be your brother?!?!?!? Were you going to tell him otherwise???
So the gray haired lady is Madeleine Bellefleur... is she a shadowhunter??? I’m confused.

Rest In Peace: Shadowhunter Chronicles
SPOILER ALERT: This is a farewell to all of the characters that passed throughout Cassandra Clare’s Shadowhunter Chronicles. This is being completed as I move through the series.
Ragnor Fell - A downworlder in a world ruled by shadowhunters that put him down, yet still helped a shadowhunter woman escape her possessive and abusive husband.
Max Lightwood - A child growing to become a skilled warrior and learned individual with an insatiable curiosity for adventure and literature, may you continue to be brave, just as you did in your last moments.
Madeleine Bellefleur - A woman that did not follow the pack, and saw a charming man for what he really was—dangerous, calculated, and selfish. A woman who put aside her hurt feelings to help an old friend in danger.
Stephen Herondale - A young man that fell for the charms of the selfish and calculated, forced to leave the love of his life for another woman in the hopes to earn the affections of a man that sent him to his death.
Céline Herondale - A young woman whose sole purpose was to marry a man and provide a child of pure shadowhunter blood, never given the opportunity to seek out life and to find a purpose for herself.
Michael Wayland and his young son - Two young lives turned to ashes by a man who only saw pawns in a larger game.

consider this a permanent starter call for;
                    VIA INFINITO ( final fantasy x )
ALTERNATE UNIVERSE, Final Fantasy X/X2. Jonathan is the son of High Summoner Fairchild, who gave her life summoning the Final Aeon to banish Sin & bring the Calm. Born in Bevelle after a wedding between the Summoner & Maester Valentine in a union that they knew would bring the people hope, Jonathan & his little sister were left in the care of the Yevonite priests when Jocelyn departed to finish her pilgrimage.
When he was four years old, an attack close to home decimated one of the temples, driving his mother to take up her staff again & resume the pilgrimage she had temporarily put on hold. By the end of the year, she had achieved her goal; Sin was defeated, the Calm had arrived... & brother & sister were left without their mother & the father who had given himself over to perform the final summoning.
Madeleine Bellefleur, one of his mother's friends, came to the city & took him & his sister away to Kilika so that they might live a quiet life. The Fairchild Calm was much needed, but fleeting. By the time he was eight, Jonathan decided to dedicate his life to becoming a summoner just as his mother had before him. He became full-fledged summoner on his eighteenth birthday when his prayers to the Fayth were answered & he was able to summon Ifrit, the Aeon of the Kilika temple. He travels with his sister as his primary guardian.

LBAF & Etymology etc
Happiest of Name Days to Vicky. Here is a little treat for you @fangirlingismygame because I love you so. 💙
There is a tradition started by Diego and Cristina in the Rosales family where the children are named after the letter A. Cami and Theia were almost named Athena and Aurora respectively.
Gwen was named by Lance as such because Lancelot and Guinevere is one of the first love stories David taught Lance.
Joan and Atlas don’t have a middle name. Cami and Arjun’s middle names are Rosales and Iris’ middle name is Jazmín.
Iris was named after the particular flower because it’s the flower Mallory left over Selena’s ‘grave’ when she buried her under the snow in LBAF IV. Gabriel picked it because it’s the flowers that helped them find and save Selena during that day.
While Joan was named after a combination of Jonathan and Julian, she is also named after Joan of Arc - who is in fact considered a national and feminist hero in France.
The name Madeleine derives from the biblical character Mary Magdalene.
It's mentioned that Joseph and Madeleine are the 'It Couple' in the Clave. Their ship name used to be Belleheart (Bellefleur + Goldheart) meaning beautiful heart.
Régine’s middle name was going to be Davina, a female variant of the name David. Madeleine and Joseph kept it as secret to reveal it to David after she was born, but Madeleine ended up not naming her daughter that way.
The name Silverstone (Lance and Arthur’s school) is based on a Formula 1 Grand Prix in the England.
Harry’s surname Anh (Vietnamese) means intellectual and bright.
Arthur names all the animals he cares for and brings home after characters from his school plays and favourite musicals.
The Lightwood-Bane, because of Max and David’s mundane wedding and now mundane life, is one of the only names that is registered and documented accordingly to mundane law. It means mavid family can vote in mundane elections - among other things.
Prince of Darkness is a name actually used to refer to Lucifer in Manichaeism (a former major religion during the the 3rd century). Prince of Darkness, in LBAF, was inspired by the Shakespearean quote in King Lear (Act 3 Scene 4) “The Prince of Darkness is a gentlemen” hinting that devil will disguise himself as a good man in order to deceive you.
The Crimson King, in several interpretations, refers to a malevolent and evil force - including in Stephen King’s Dark Tower Series.
Both Iris and Hermes are names of two famous greek gods both known for being messengers.
Hermes last name Cain is similar to most warlock names - single syllable and has a dark/sad meaning. Cain refers to ‘first murderer’ from the bible after Cain and Abel.
Everyone in the family pronounces Lance’s name with the British pronunciation (David was adamant about using it) while everyone in his school (including Harry) uses the American pronunciation.
The only people (whom he knows) who don’t refer to Arthur as AJ are David and Kincaid.
Joan’s dog’s full name is Oliver Twist - named after a famous fictional character like all Herondale/Fairchild pets.
Other Max no longer goes by Lightwood-Bane and has a different surname in the Other Timeline (his present/our future).
Arjun is named after an infamous archer in Indian mythology.
Before Lance found about Kincaid’s destiny, Crimson King used to be one of his favourite bands - they’re a famous rock band from the 1960s and 70s.
And finally, Lance and Arthur were the names I had picked out for my own children, but I gave it to Mavid because I love them so much and wanted my unborn, imaginary children to have two wonderful parents.

En 1840, Ferdinand Perrier,  aide de camp de Soliman Pacha en Égypte, regagnant la France et passant par Saïda, décrit ce “vieillard extrêmement remarquable qui se tient à la porte de l’hospice français, à la physionomie toujours noble ,à la main gauche  mutilée  (…)” dont il recueille le récit;
