Having severe auditory processing can straight up be like living in one of those videos. I'm serious.

If you don't have auditory processing issues, go watch one of those and try to figure out what the original words were just based on the bad dub and the way the characters' lips move.

If I ask you to repeat what you said three times, I am extremely sorry, but I assure you, I'm the one that's more upset about it

So, what am I hearing?

You're trying to say "I'm making soup for dinner"

But all I'm hearing is "and Megan's over for dinner"

That's a real thing you could say but who the fuck is Megan?

You're trying to say "I left the keys on the entry table"

But all I'm hearing is "all of thick ease in the untreatable"

This time it's complete nonsense, like I'm trying to unscramble something in MadGab

You're trying to say "can you hand me the fork and plate over there?"

But all I'm hearing is "can you handle the four complain over there?"

And that's almost something resembling a sentence but what

Cue me staring incomprehensibly while my brain starts whirring like a laptop from 2005 to figure out what the fuck you actually just said to me.

I have to unscramble like 20% of what's said to me exactly like this and have come to rely heavily on reading lip positions/forms to understand the sounds I'm hearing. That makes my processing even worse when everyone is wearing a mask. Please be extra kind to people with apd during covid. Even a slight decrease in volume or voice clarity can reduce processing ability by a significant amount with apd and masks muffle people's voices which means added difficulty. It's honestly a miracle I understand anything when talking with people with a mask on.

So, if you know someone with auditory processing disorder, please be nice to them and just repeat what you said.

If this sounds like you and you've been trying to figure out why your hearing tests keep coming back pristine, you might wanna look up auditory processing disorder. I thought I had hearing issues my whole childhood and didn't find out about apd until I was like 20 and then everything made sense
