You think that you've tamed it

But it's just lying in wait

Oh, rage

Is it in my veins?

Feel it in my face when

The meat tenderiser is broken

-necked so, I must soften

the beef with my father’s

hands, marrow-thick

with knowledge

the meat must be beaten

brutal into tenderness.

That anybody softens

with violence.

Another morning and I wake with thirst for the goodness I do not have.

anyway anyway anyway when the implied speaker in the opening poem of Mad Honey Symposium compares their lover to something grown, carnivorous, beautifully hungry. and how. how Minthara is transformed, in rejection by her goddesses, into a kind of divine embodiment in her own right. the reverence of the poetic speaker for their beloved as a source of protection - the. god. the implied sapphic yearning in "an armory for cunning loves" - and as something greedy, consumptive. this love devours light. the lover's nature as a threat and an enticement.
