“Macie Day” is not his real name. His real name is Max Jägerman, because that’s who he is.

He is a swap version of my Nighthawk Max Jägerman.

In both universes Max moved outside of Hatchetfield when he was like 13-ish after his mom’s passing to live with his uncle.

Nighthawks Max moved back to Hatchetfield after two years in his universe.

“Macie” didn’t. He stayed with his uncle and had a pretty shitty life. In the summer before his senior year he created a account called “Macie Day”. The account wasn’t big but the attention he got from it was something he craved.

At some point he meets his universes Nico, or Nick in this universe, online as Macie. Nick and Macie really got along and fell for each other.

Nick in this universe is still living with his dad and didn’t grow Nighthawk Nico did. Nick has like a lot of internalized homophobia and despite being gay, doesn’t want to believe he is. He is also very blind because he doesn’t wear glasses.

So knowing this Max just kept up the act of Macie so he could still be with Nick. They’ve met up a few time and Nick just completely believes that Macie is a real girl and such.

One of the topics he keeps seeing is baby showers—is it gauche to host your own if no one's offered, when are yours scheduled, what tactics are you deploying to try to corral wayward giftgivers into buying the things you actually want off of your registry instead of a mountain of clothing that doesn't fit your aesthetic, what did you get at yours and what would you have done differently...

It's terrifying to realize some people have already had their baby showers. Alastor still doesn't know if he and his alternate are going to have one. They don't even have a registry yet. They've looked at some recommended checklists and puzzled over why some items made the "needs" list instead of the "optional" list (why was a stroller a "need"? what's wrong with carrying the baby around?) and haven't even finished deciding what's on their checklist yet, much less figuring out which product they want for each item on the list, much less set up an actual registry. Did registries even exist a century ago? In department stores, maybe? Like Macy's? He doesn't know, he didn't have a baby a century ago.

He feels so behind.

With a burst of adrenaline and determination, he propels himself out of his apartment and to the closest open baby goods store his phone can find. He can't make any decisions without Cal, but by God he's got at least half of a checklist that he can fill out, and he can skip all the items they put question marks by, instead focusing on things like cribs and baby carriers he knows they need.

Less than five minutes into the store his adrenaline runs out. It's drained away by the effort of trying to match what he sees on the shelves with what he already know they need without getting distracted by the endless tiny clothing and niche furniture and rubber horn caps and diaper management solutions (are they getting cloth or disposable diapers?) and bright white plastic medical equipment and memory books and big colorful toys. It's not long before he's meandering aimlessly, gaze drifting between the countless shelves of products and the half-finished registry checklist in his hands.

An employee comes up to him, and—of all things—asks whether he needs any help. He stares at her, face heating up with humiliation.

He's so mortified at the thought of how he must look—vague and confused and lost, just a foggy-minded pregnant twit, nothing like the sharp-edged razor-witted Radio Demon—that he immediately turns on his hoof and leaves the store.

Personal Tangent on my Weightloss Journey

I've been on a weightloss journey/health and fitness journey and today just really made me realize how far I've come since September 2022, which is when I started focusing on my health.

For so long, basically my entire life, weight has always been a struggle and somewhere in my early to mid 20's I accepted myself, I loved myself. I was size 22/24 and I loved myself as I was and didn't have the drive or mindset really to want to change. I felt good where I was, my mental health improved and I stopped caring about other people's perception of me, if a random stranger had a problem with me, that was on them and their problem not mine. That mindset hasn't changed.

But lo and behold a few years later, between my own health concerns and a death in the family that hit me hard, I wanted to make a change to better myself. So I started working on overcoming my anxiety for the gym (Covid and germ related anxiety), and being a bit more mindful of what I ate (I was already doing this before hand to try and manage my migraine/cluster headaches...I had a really bad episode summer of 2022). I didn't count calories, I was just being more picky and not people pleasing and basically being selfish. I went to the gym...and eventually...after like a month or two of exposure to the environment, my anxiety lessened to the point that I no longer had anxiety.

Then in like January 2023, I decided that for me, just to make myself accountable, I was going to track calories. I was a little hesitant at first because I didn't know how this would affect me mentally, if it was make me obsessive or worse. But for me, I thankfully did not, it just helped as a tool to see my habits, see if and where I needed to change a little.

And I guess what I really wanted to rant about was how I still perceive myself as I was. I've lost over 70lbs but I don't always see it. I still wear the same clothes I wore as a 22/24, I know and feel how baggy they are and I know I'm smaller in size but I still have a hard time perceiving it. And today my mom convinced me to go dress shopping at the mall. And I was (still kind of am) convinced that I wouldn't find anything I like in my size because that's how it always has been... I've either needed to order my size online or essentially stick with stores that cater to plus size women. But after not finding anything in the plus size section at Macy's (unsurprisingly), my mom wanted me to try the other section. I figured I'd amuse her, knowing that none of the dresses would fit, that I'm still too big. So I took the biggest sized dresses they had (size 16) in the regular dress section. And to my fucking amazement they fit...almost every fucking dress I tried as a size 16 fucking fit (a few did not, but lets just say the girls were a little too big for the cut)...and I realized and really saw myself for that moment in time just how much smaller I am. And I just...I can't get over my perception of myself...it will be a mental struggle as I start to love the body I have worked hard for...the body that is healthier...the body that makes me feel better and is stronger.

And I know I will have difficult days ahead because even though I know woman's sizing are not standardized and the number will fluctuate depending in the brand, I will not always fit into the same size in every brand I try. But still I can't believe that last year I bought a size 24 dress and today bought a dress in a size 16.

Just kind of needed to go off a bit as I process the day. Thanks for reading if you got to the end!
