Just pay people to do things!!!!! You know who can make a meal plan? A cook, a nutritionist, a person with years of cooking experience for large groups, etc. We have a world that is on fire and people who are damn near close with low wages, high expenses. Just. Fucking. Employ. PEOPLE!!!!!
#Machine learning for the fail#This stuff is best used to speed things up that are scientific processes#Like looking for I thought of areas for fossils using centuries of data#Or shaving a few percentage points off of the margin of error for engineering plans that are already well tested#Yet the same people hoarding money like Smaug while millions go hungry and without shelter#Want to throw a hammer at a chalkboard to solve a problem#Just hire people and pay them well#The culture of the elite must be purged and reoriented toward public good#Before we are forced to purge them to save ourselves

Burnt out
#initially this was meant to be something else entirely#but i wasn't really liking how it was going so I scrapped the idea and opted out for something a bit more personal#ive been really suffering from burn out for the last few years and just barely keeping my head above water#there are times where i seriously feel like ive failed in every aspect of my career#like if i were good enough i wouldn't have burnt out#i love my job and i love my trade i love every skill ive gain up until this point#but its been hard not to take it personally when all the effort you've put into honing those skills#are abused or exploited#life is difficult enough already and and time is fleeting#taking time for yourself is above all the most important thing you can do to help your work flourish#taking a break isn't failure#its health#we aren't machines despite our industries treating us as such#just waiting and hoping that itll pay off#ive certainly learned my lesson#and im looking forward to brighter horizons#and healthier more respectful ones#ill be okay ive learned how to love my art in my personal time again#but i certainly need to let my mind rest and my body to recover#these tags are lengthy anyways#unionize and dont work for nothing from large companies#be gay do drugs love your friends make art for yourself too#my art#scuttles out of here#i hope these long ass images actually show up in full resolution#i did draw them fucking TOLL as hell

I have to wonder how many people celebrating AI translation also complain about "broken English" and how obvious it is something was Google translated from another language without a fluent English speaker involved to properly clean up the translation/grammar.
Because I bet it's a lot.
I know why execs are all for it—AI is the new buzzword and it lets them cut jobs thus "save" money and not have to worry about pesky labour laws when one employs humans—but everyone else?
There was some outcry when Crunchyroll fired many of their translators in favour of AI translation (with some people to "clean up the AI's work") but I can't help but think that was in part because it was Japanese-to-English and personally affected them. Same when Duolingo fired many of their translators in favour of LLM translation. Meanwhile companies are firing staff when it's English to another language and there's this idea that that's fine or not as big a deal because English is "easy" to translate and/or because people don't think of how it will impact people in non-English countries.
Also it doesn't affect native English speakers so it doesn't get much headway in the news cycle or online anyway because so much of the dominant media is from English-speaking countries and English-speakers dominate social media.
But different languages have different grammar structures that LLMs don't do, and I grew up on "jokes" about people speaking in "broken English" and mocking people who use the wrong word when it was clearly a literal translation but the meaning was obvious long before LLMs were a thing, too. In fact, the specific way a character spoke broken English has been a way to denote their native tongue for decades, usually in a racist way.
Then Google translate came out and "Google-translated English" became an insult for people and criticism of companies because it was clearly wonky to native speakers. Even now, LLMs—which are heavily trained on English compared to other languages—don't have a natural output so native English speakers can clock LLM-generated text if it's longer than a sentence or two.
But, for whatever reason, it's not seen as a problem when it goes the other way because fuck non-English readers or people who want to read in their native tongue I guess.
#and it's not like no people were doing translations so wonky translations were better than nothing#it's actual translators being fired for a subpar replacement#and anyone who keeps their job suddenly being responsible for cleaning up llm output rather than what they trained in#(which can take just as much time or longer than doing the translation by hand from scratch)#(if you want it done right anyway)#hell to this day i hear people complain about written translations of indigenous words and how they 'aren't english enough'#even though they're using the ipa and use a system white english people came up with in the first place#and you can easily look up the proper pronunciation and hear it spoken#but there's such a double-standard where it's expected that other languages cater to english/english speakers#but that grace and accommodation doesn't go the other way#and it's the failing of non-english speakers when an english translation is broken#you see it whenever monolingual english speakers travel to other countries and utterly refuse to learn the language#but if someone doesn't speak in unaccented (to them) english fluently in their home country the person 'isn't trying hard enough'#this is just the new version of that where non-english speakers are supposed to do more work and put up with subpar translations#even as a native english speaker/writer i get a (much) lesser version of this because i write with canadian spelling#and some people get pissed if their internet experience is disrupted by 'ou' instead of 'o' or '-re' instead of '-er'#because dialects and regional phrasing/spelling is a thing#human translators can (or should) be able to account for it but llms are not smart enough to do so#and that's not even getting into slang and how llms don't account for it#or how llms can put slurs into translations because it doesn't do nuance or context and doesn't know the language#if you ever complained about buying something from another country that came with machine-translated instructions#you should be pissed at companies cutting english-to-[language] staff in favour of glorified google translate#because the companies are effectively saying they're fine with non-native speakers getting a wonky/broken version

i dont even feel like what i do for work is work, really. i go to a location. i get beamed with psychic attacks. i take a lunch time nap. i get beamed with psychic attacks. lately ive been reading shoujo manga on my breaks. i go home. every two weeks my bank balance goes up without any notice or warning, completely unrelated to the earlier tribulations

All of the Fails have swallowed a clock at some point in their lives. This causes them to wake up at the same time every day. Unfortunately, none of them were set to the same time, so Marietta had to make a schedule to keep track of when the kids wake up.
#jenny june actually swallowed too much river water and the clock broke#so she set up a rube goldberg machine to splash a bucket of water on her every morning#unfortunately she also goes to bed soaking wet so she just sleeps through it half of the time#then the bucket smacks her in the face and she finally wakes up#yeah i know i haven't posted in a while#i need to learn my 188 lines and also have a job#so yeah I've been busy#new fic is slowly making progress#but in the meantime does anyone want the fail floorplan#i made it a while ago but i never posted it#but i have been using it as a reference for my fic#so if anyone wants it. say something and I'll post it#wow I'm really a yapper aren't i#fail family#failure: a love story#Marietta fail#gerty fail#jenny june fail#nelly fail#john n fail#autism#adhd

a large amount of time I've been spending on -untitled undefined scope original fiction project- since the last time I posted about it has been trying to develop the protagonist concept I came up with last summer or whatever into like, a character that would feel real and era appropriate.
it's fun research to do. naturally a lot of the details I assigned to her are things that I already think are cool, so it's been a lot of fun trying to trace her traits back through the relatively recent past, getting reminded of how much things have changed, or where the gaps in my intuition are, and then doing a flurry of reading to get a sense for exactly how someone like her and the people around her could have happened and what her life was probably like leading up to her present day. hopefully this results in some good good verisimilitude.
#I wrote a short story from her perspective over the holidays and then didn't know how to continue it#and then I got distracted by real life stuff for a few months#I forget if I posted about that#and then I've been picking through archive dot org for the last few weeks looking at this stuff#the last big rabbit hole was trying to get a better feel for era appropriate ts/tv subculture#the current one I'm looking at is how she would've gotten into language learning and how that would've worked#nettle has been prodding me about the setting thing lately so I've been thinking about that more too#probably the biggest hurdle by far is figuring out how I want to play that#and how I want the thing to be divided up#since the original coc scenario I'm developing this out of is centered on a flight from LA to honolulu#and the airport dungeon was definitely meant to be a hook for a larger campaign#some amount of it is going to cover protag lady's failed life in LA and some of it is going to be worse things happening in hawaii#but it's like. how much do I want to balance it one way or the other#and realistically how much does the aesthetics of 20th century air travel add to the story#besides me personally thinking it's compelling ofc#a lot of what I find compelling about hawaii is that it's an east/west cultural crossroads and realistically that's also true of socal#and I can wax poetic about socal as much as I want without worrying all that much about mishandling something#and there's also a lot of socal specific history along similar parallels to pull from that I'm more familiar with#I guess it comes down to whether curiosity re: 'doing it right' is enough of a motivator to do the increased amount of research#which I guess it has so far with the above character details. so hopefully that will continue#but it also feels like using machine translation a bit yknow. it's hard to know how effectively I'll be able to sanity check#although depending on where this goes I might be able to get other people involved to sensitivity read down the line#with most of the creative things I do I just have a tendency to always rely really heavily on figuring things out myself#I also want protag lady to have a Cool Car and idk how to get that from point a to point b narratively#this is like an entire second or third post's worth of tags but I don't feel like unfucking this so whatever. suffer. I guess.

there are so many youtube videos that are like “tears of the kingdom is a disappointing masterpiece” or “tears of the kingdom is a flawed 10/10” like can we all just be honest with ourselves and say the game was fucking mid because everything cool about it was underdeveloped
#the legend of zelda#tears of the kingdom#it has the coolest physics engine and machine building that you never need to fully utilize for anything#it has the best map concept in the world and once you actually explore it it’s all either reused or copy pasted#they claimed that they learned from the criticism of botw w the dungeons#but they’re all just divine beasts with a new coat of paint#this game promises so much in its opening hours but fails to deliver once you actually play the whole thing

what i like about ada's report, & i'll get into it more eventually, is that despite it being ada explaining the plot (& her motivations) to you directly, it presents an interesting relationship between ada, a known liar & manipulator, & the audience. while she withholds information from other characters & skirts about on mystery throughout RE4 & separate ways, there is one person to whom she doesn't lie, to whom she does tell the truth, at least a part of it, & that is you, the player. it is a very neat narrative device that wouldn't work as well in a different medium
#* file // : OOC — ( 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐏𝐎𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐑'𝐒 𝐂𝐑𝐔𝐒𝐀𝐃𝐄 . )#not that anyone's actually fucking read ada's report people still think ada was saving leon out of love#in direct opposition to wesker's orders in the original re4#i wish this didn't make me mad but it does it's right there in plain english the nikita pose is a misdirection#it's subverting the trope she's part of a bigger conspiracy leon is a necessary piece of her mission#like the subversion of the femme fatale isn't subtle#they either die or are undone upon reveal of their treachery ada survives & lives beyond the logical endpoint of her character#she isn't weakened or completely changed in fact she learns how to manipulate the hero better for their next encounter#she isn't working for the villain both in that she tells you that she's only been pretending to this whole time#& that she works for another organization that's been spying on wesker through ada this whole time#but also the fact that wesker is neither the villain of re4 nor resident evil as a franchise he is another cog in the machine#just another one of umbrella's leftovers#see i know people think ada despises chris because he mistook her for carla one time on the tanker#but i think they've got a lot more in common than either is truly willing to admit should they actually ever speak to each other#i just think it's neat that she gets his line addressed to wesker to use on mr. x (just another one of umbrella's failed experiments)#darkside chronicles & re5 were developed around the same time i'm sure it's a coincidence

one of the biggest ironies of my life that i was thinking about yesterday - i know that drag and drop / node-based 'coding' helps a wider (usually more visual) variety of brain types learn to program. this was the entire basis of the research group i was on for seven years in the burgh, and i completely agree with and support it. but im not that way at ALL. im that stereotype who likes pure code, and finds it easier to read the language and find patterns in the words/numbers/formatted lines than in nodes. i HATE nodes, and sometimes even fellow programmers look at me like im crazy for it.
Like dont give me that pretty but controlled interface, i want to know whats underneath.
#Journal shit#Its kinda like how while getting my computer science degree i discovered that while i love programming#I HATE graphics programming \o/#When im supposed to be the person combining visual art and code#Its always made me feel like i was especially broken#Like i liked the really intense programming conceptual courses and software development and the basics of how a computer runs on assembly#All that was fascinating#And even machine learning was mildly entertaining#But shaders and technical support for rigs and procedural visual design and particles all that stuff bored the ever living shit out me#And all that stuff was exactly what my professors expected out of me#Between that and my general lack of real artistic talent#It always left me feeling less like im bridging the gap between computer science and art#And more that i am simply failing at BOTH lol

Another week, another Stable Diffusion experiment. This time it’s Elon Musk who applied for a massive artificial transformation. As always we’ll just use these parameters:
“high definition, insanely detailed , Cartoon”
This time I started a vote on Mastodon to let the community pick their favorite Musk to start with. Oh, this is going to be a good one!

Kiryu was so beating the fuck out of those vending machines as a child he would buy something and it would get janked up and stuck and he would stare at it before punching it so hard the glass explodes (essence of mantis shrimp) and then hed take his candy and leave
#Yakuza loveblog#like you think for a second hes going to leave it alone and walk away but then he punches the vending machine so hard it shatters#he was trying not to get angry and failed btw#and he would still do this well into his twenties but he learned after getting showered with glass shards the first time
