hey, random question! what platform/method do you use to keep your robust digital media when ripping CDs? i havent done it since i was a kid with itunes (when itunes let you upload your own stuff....) and wanted to start again
Platform...they are files?
Like, mp3s; I keep them in my hard drive and thumb drives and so forth. My 'music' folder has subfolders, mostly by artist, which have subfolders per album. I just. Have the files. In my computer. Very basic method.
I organize and play them through VLC mostly. Or, on devices that still have it, I have kept using Windows Media Player, because I'm comfortable with the UI and why not, but they're actively phasing it out so I can't recommend adopting it lmao. And ofc if you're in the apple ecosystem it's not remotely an option.
I don't know that much about macintosh tbh but afaik they do let you have a file directory where you put your files that you own, which is definitely what I consider to be the most sensible baseline, if you have a device with enough memory. And memory has gotten pretty cheap.
I don't know of any cloud client service that's actively catered to letting you upload stuff you own and then stream those files on any device you please without having to jump through extra hoops, and suspect it might not be a thing at this point because there is no profit in that and it's not free to provide. They really want you to have to pay money to access content that you don't own. Sorry.
I bet you could figure out a way to keep a reasonably large music library in the amount of free storage google gives you with an account, and then play from there, but I don't think it would be very seamless. Maybe even less so on iphone.
But if your phone of whatever type has or can be modified to have sufficient storage space, you really can just. Keep your music in it. And then play it. VLC is open source and very good, and they have it for apple; I definitely recommend it.
But you don't like, keep files in it, it's just a player and sorter. So it doesn't feel like it answers the question you asked exactly, sorry.
#ask#hoc est meum#axiolotl#music#tech#i still have an mp3 player#that i hook up by aux cable to a speaker#when i want to play music out loud#had very smug this holiday season when two people on two occasions spent an hour each trying to get their paid Spotify accounts#to work with the right combination of devices#to actually provide ambient music#while i could do so in thirty seconds flat after the second guy gave up#the first 'guy' was my sister at christmas who borrowed my laptop because she couldn't get her bluetooth speaker working#so she wanted to aux without tying her phone to the speakers#accidentally hard-booted it#and got hella DARVO and made christmas very bad for me#i'm still sore about this and this made me extra smug about 'winning' against spotify at new years lol#but also spotify demonetized most of their tracks so i get to make my penury and inflexibility into a moral stance now lmaooooo

I have joined the society of bluetooth earphones
#refurbished for the record#i have been dragged kicking and screaming into the future#my phone doesn't have a headphone jack. my mp3 player does but it also has bluetooth capability. my ereader only has bluetooth for audio#so I figure since I'm going on the eclipse trip in a few months I should get some wireless buds for the train#went with some used skullcandy sesh because they were like twenty-two dollars had had a twenty hour battery life#I ALMOST went with some used Hesh headphones that looked really cool and had fifteen hours but were also forty-nine dollars#which combined with the other things I needed to buy would have put me thirteen dollars over my seventy-five dollar walmart giftcard#I was very tempted if just for the aesthetique~ but realized if I bought the cheaper earbuds I could have enough money for some instax film#and the cheaper earbuds and 2 pack of film plus the household objects I needed put me at a tidy seventy-four dollars and fifty-six cents#so I didn't have to spend any actual money on anything woot woot#the earbuds are blue. which is my favorite color. but they're like a pastel blue. which is like my least favorite shade of blue#ah well I'll sacrifice looks for function and affordability any day#*stares in slight dismay at hideously pink refurbished and thirty dollar instax mini 9*#what I REALLY wanted was some of those urbanista solar-powered headphones/earbuds#but even used/refurbished both were out of the total price range of the gift card(s)#I actually had two giftcards which together totaled seventy-five so that was pretty sweet

LOOK at this chunky thing of an mp3 player its so cool looking im still mad its 130 bucks and bluetooth is apparently really dodgy with it but it has buttons it has the wheel that you can spin its got a little hook thing inside to tie a little strap or keychain i love how tactile it looks
#i ended up settling with a different cheaper generic mp3 player jus bc my main objective is to take my music out my phone storage#if i had wired earbuds maybe the hifi walker would be my option but my semi cracked bluetooth headphones of 4 years is still running strong#idk how this other one is gonna be . it seems like it does the job and im hoping it does . wish me luck 😭#el.doc

usually i kinda scoff at "tech is magic" posts but this usb-c charger charges everything except my mp3 player, and my mp3 player charges with every usb-c charger except that one. and it feels like the only conclusion is that the embedded anima are incompatible

I found my old Coby mp3 player again (which surprisingly had 4bg of storage, I swore it was like. 1gb total), and I was like "aw neat why did I stop using this, I can just use this one instead of buying a new one!" then I had the gall to jostle the headphone cable in the most minute way then remembered why I stopped using it aside from the era of music streaming being more of a thing after like 2012ish
I did get to listen to Life in Technicolor ii and have a nostalgia trip though, so that's nice
#vena vents#not art#aside from that it's solid ig#lasts much longer than modern mp3 players#sometimes bluetooth headphones are nice.... because they don't suffer from that#If I could go back in time I would just hoard old mp3 players#they were just so much more solid when actual large companies made them with higher quality stuff compared to now#also the shapes were fun

My phone being able to do the tasks of 20 other tools is cool and all but sometimes having a thing that just does one thing might actually be better
Anyway I'm gonna get an alarm clock so the literally first thing I do in the morning isn't grabbing my phone (and then of course checking tumblr and twitter and the news and-)
And I'm also considering getting an mp3 player (or finding the one I had 10 years ago and seeing if it still works) bc then I can go to the library to study and have my music while leaving my phone in the locker downstairs where it can't distract me
#adhd#i don't think my old mp3 player had bluetooth so probably gonna get a new one even if i find it#bc then i can also take it to go skating or to the gym (wired headphones are great but not for exercise)#basically just. gotta find ways to leave my phone behind in more situations#i say while typing this on my phone

Making some actual progress on moving away from primarily using Spotify / Youtube / etc. for music by finally setting up Foobar for ios and tbh. I would have done this sooner if I knew there were cute themes for it and it has a built-in FTP server in the settings
#dis.txt#I feel like I’m slowly using SFTP and FTP more#my (now jailbroken w/ KOreader) kindle pw. my 3ds. now it’s my phone#hopefully in the future I’ll be able to primarily use an mp3 player with no internet connection for Maximum Focus#but I need to buy better wired IEMs. i’m curently stuck w/ a bluetooth headset (cringe)

Me: *tied to a chair and spitting blood* "CDs aren't dead"
Planned obsolescence: "hit him again, Vinny"
#In other words my car's 11 year old CD player has died and I'm distraught#I have so many fucking CDs I now have to digitize and put on my MP3 player so I can use the aux cord#I fucking hate it here who killed my beautiful CD player#My wife... MY WIIIIIIIIIIIIIIFE#I've been personally victimized by entropy#I JUST BOUGHT A NEW LEONA LEWIS CD TOO#I'm too pretty to be dragged into the horrid world of bluetooth exclusive music playing

Why do you need your earbuds to have a wire so badly?
I am assuming this is about a post I reblogged like six months ago when I went off on forced technological enshitification and the slow erosion of consumer options. But sure, I'll bite.
Why do I "need" my earbuds to have a wire? I dunno, Anon, maybe I:
Don't want to have to worry about recharging my earbuds.
Don't want my earbuds to be even easier to lose.
Don't want my earbuds to need separate accessories that are as easy to lose as the earbuds.
Prefer to have bluetooth turned off on my devices for security and safety reasons.
Like being able to seamlessly plug my earbuds into my computer, my MP3 player, or any other device with a headphone jack.
Don't want to spend 50 dollars on decent wireless earbuds when I can do all the above things with a pair of solid earbuds that cost me like $12 during the Obama administration.
Don't care about what kinds of headphones or earbuds people wear but don't like what it says about our society when other people apparently care what kind of earbuds I'm wearing so much they have send an Anonymous ask to interrogate me about it.
And I guess, more abstractly, because fuck Apple. That's why.

i stg i don't understand what's going on with itunes. every time i try to add an album to my ipod it syncs my entire library for like 20+ minutes then wipes the ipod so i have to sync (20+ minutes) again. hello.
#ughh i love that it's a lightning cable and has bluetooth but maybe i should get an old ipod classic -_-#theyre expensive though. for something i technically already own?#i mean how often am i really adding new music yknow#still it's wild that doing the same thing to my phone is literally a 2 minute job#plug. copy paste. unplug.#sighh i fucking hate that the only mp3 players being sold here are shitty no name imports. i don't trust ruizu#secondhand is the only option and it's bleak in there

okay so, client meeting was not the confrontational disaster I thought it would be, however my fucking PC had a full nuclear meltdown about my headphones connecting, would not recognize them as existing, skype crashed and wouldn't relaunch when I tried to do a call, teams wouldn't recognize my device as even existing, ended up trying to restart my computer at which point it WOULDN'T TURN ALL THE WAY OFF AND RESTART SO I HAD TO HOLD THE BUTTON DOWN LIKE I WAS DROWNING IT.....
anyway that was embarrassing. if any of my neighbours heard me shouting "WHY DO YOU WANT ME TO DIE????? WHY DO YOU WANT ME TO KILL MYSELF???? I'LL KILL YOU!!!!" it's because I'm in an abusive relationship with a 2018 HP piece of garbage.
#i would send this computer back to the office and just start bringing my office laptop home but#its a 2018 mac so like. not really any better#it may handle bluetooth better but it has the battery life of a 2007 mp3 player

That would hurt sales, unfortunately, as consumers have become very comfortable with the accessibility, even though it's at the expense of "You downloaded a file! Where is it? lmao fuck if i know". Making a more capable phone that would require some basic understanding of computers to be usable makes for a less user friendly experience.
this can't be true can it
#i barely use my phone for anything but i will say one thing#bluetooth is fucking awesome#and that's honestly it#my phone is just a portable youtube and mp3 player#and a camera#and i guess i use it for phone calls#and SOMETIMES the internet#seriously what the fuck are 95% of the apps on my phone
