hey, random question! what platform/method do you use to keep your robust digital media when ripping CDs? i havent done it since i was a kid with itunes (when itunes let you upload your own stuff....) and wanted to start again
Platform...they are files?
Like, mp3s; I keep them in my hard drive and thumb drives and so forth. My 'music' folder has subfolders, mostly by artist, which have subfolders per album. I just. Have the files. In my computer. Very basic method.
I organize and play them through VLC mostly. Or, on devices that still have it, I have kept using Windows Media Player, because I'm comfortable with the UI and why not, but they're actively phasing it out so I can't recommend adopting it lmao. And ofc if you're in the apple ecosystem it's not remotely an option.
I don't know that much about macintosh tbh but afaik they do let you have a file directory where you put your files that you own, which is definitely what I consider to be the most sensible baseline, if you have a device with enough memory. And memory has gotten pretty cheap.
I don't know of any cloud client service that's actively catered to letting you upload stuff you own and then stream those files on any device you please without having to jump through extra hoops, and suspect it might not be a thing at this point because there is no profit in that and it's not free to provide. They really want you to have to pay money to access content that you don't own. Sorry.
I bet you could figure out a way to keep a reasonably large music library in the amount of free storage google gives you with an account, and then play from there, but I don't think it would be very seamless. Maybe even less so on iphone.
But if your phone of whatever type has or can be modified to have sufficient storage space, you really can just. Keep your music in it. And then play it. VLC is open source and very good, and they have it for apple; I definitely recommend it.
But you don't like, keep files in it, it's just a player and sorter. So it doesn't feel like it answers the question you asked exactly, sorry.
#ask#hoc est meum#axiolotl#music#tech#i still have an mp3 player#that i hook up by aux cable to a speaker#when i want to play music out loud#had very smug this holiday season when two people on two occasions spent an hour each trying to get their paid Spotify accounts#to work with the right combination of devices#to actually provide ambient music#while i could do so in thirty seconds flat after the second guy gave up#the first 'guy' was my sister at christmas who borrowed my laptop because she couldn't get her bluetooth speaker working#so she wanted to aux without tying her phone to the speakers#accidentally hard-booted it#and got hella DARVO and made christmas very bad for me#i'm still sore about this and this made me extra smug about 'winning' against spotify at new years lol#but also spotify demonetized most of their tracks so i get to make my penury and inflexibility into a moral stance now lmaooooo

hey does anyone know a way to deny internet connection to certain specific apps?
#ads on the mp3 app i use have gotten really intrusive and annoying n they keep asking me for a £5 a week subscription. r they insane#starting to think i may have to buy an actual mp3 player but that would b annoying.#im already used to this app and i always have my phone on me so its convenient (one less thing to carry/lose) and the bluetooth is vital#if i can deny it internet it cant show me apps but i cant find a setting for that anywhere. only for bckground data

i do actually feel kind of over spotify
#i dont pay for mine im on my dads family plan#but the idea of paying for it in the near future is gross#considering that artists get paid p much nothing and they keep trying to force ai on me#also the app keeps getting worse. i dont like it.#but theres a good mp3 player for £30 which sounds ideal honestly#and it has bluetooth so i could still connect to a speaker#if you have any mp3 recs or music library software recs for mac please share them!!

Using my old phone that's begging for death and can barely turn on as a vessel for my music since it still has a headphone jack
#whichever evil demon out there decided phones dont need a headphone jack im gling to find you#im not joking im willing to get jailed if phones can have a headphone jack again#like my new phone works but at what cost#the cost is me nearly having a breakdown trying to find the right side for my bluetooth headphone#i didnt find it#genuinely nearly cried#this old phone will probably blow me up in my sleep but its worth it for music in botb ears#also wired headphones cost 6.99 at my work and bluetooth ones that dont hurt my ears cost 20 so really its a long term investment#im buying mp3 player out of nessessity at this rate

I have joined the society of bluetooth earphones
#refurbished for the record#i have been dragged kicking and screaming into the future#my phone doesn't have a headphone jack. my mp3 player does but it also has bluetooth capability. my ereader only has bluetooth for audio#so I figure since I'm going on the eclipse trip in a few months I should get some wireless buds for the train#went with some used skullcandy sesh because they were like twenty-two dollars had had a twenty hour battery life#I ALMOST went with some used Hesh headphones that looked really cool and had fifteen hours but were also forty-nine dollars#which combined with the other things I needed to buy would have put me thirteen dollars over my seventy-five dollar walmart giftcard#I was very tempted if just for the aesthetique~ but realized if I bought the cheaper earbuds I could have enough money for some instax film#and the cheaper earbuds and 2 pack of film plus the household objects I needed put me at a tidy seventy-four dollars and fifty-six cents#so I didn't have to spend any actual money on anything woot woot#the earbuds are blue. which is my favorite color. but they're like a pastel blue. which is like my least favorite shade of blue#ah well I'll sacrifice looks for function and affordability any day#*stares in slight dismay at hideously pink refurbished and thirty dollar instax mini 9*#what I REALLY wanted was some of those urbanista solar-powered headphones/earbuds#but even used/refurbished both were out of the total price range of the gift card(s)#I actually had two giftcards which together totaled seventy-five so that was pretty sweet

LOOK at this chunky thing of an mp3 player its so cool looking im still mad its 130 bucks and bluetooth is apparently really dodgy with it but it has buttons it has the wheel that you can spin its got a little hook thing inside to tie a little strap or keychain i love how tactile it looks
#i ended up settling with a different cheaper generic mp3 player jus bc my main objective is to take my music out my phone storage#if i had wired earbuds maybe the hifi walker would be my option but my semi cracked bluetooth headphones of 4 years is still running strong#idk how this other one is gonna be . it seems like it does the job and im hoping it does . wish me luck 😭#el.doc

usually i kinda scoff at "tech is magic" posts but this usb-c charger charges everything except my mp3 player, and my mp3 player charges with every usb-c charger except that one. and it feels like the only conclusion is that the embedded anima are incompatible

I found my old Coby mp3 player again (which surprisingly had 4bg of storage, I swore it was like. 1gb total), and I was like "aw neat why did I stop using this, I can just use this one instead of buying a new one!" then I had the gall to jostle the headphone cable in the most minute way then remembered why I stopped using it aside from the era of music streaming being more of a thing after like 2012ish
I did get to listen to Life in Technicolor ii and have a nostalgia trip though, so that's nice
#vena vents#not art#aside from that it's solid ig#lasts much longer than modern mp3 players#sometimes bluetooth headphones are nice.... because they don't suffer from that#If I could go back in time I would just hoard old mp3 players#they were just so much more solid when actual large companies made them with higher quality stuff compared to now#also the shapes were fun

My phone being able to do the tasks of 20 other tools is cool and all but sometimes having a thing that just does one thing might actually be better
Anyway I'm gonna get an alarm clock so the literally first thing I do in the morning isn't grabbing my phone (and then of course checking tumblr and twitter and the news and-)
And I'm also considering getting an mp3 player (or finding the one I had 10 years ago and seeing if it still works) bc then I can go to the library to study and have my music while leaving my phone in the locker downstairs where it can't distract me
#adhd#i don't think my old mp3 player had bluetooth so probably gonna get a new one even if i find it#bc then i can also take it to go skating or to the gym (wired headphones are great but not for exercise)#basically just. gotta find ways to leave my phone behind in more situations#i say while typing this on my phone

Me: *tied to a chair and spitting blood* "CDs aren't dead"
Planned obsolescence: "hit him again, Vinny"
#In other words my car's 11 year old CD player has died and I'm distraught#I have so many fucking CDs I now have to digitize and put on my MP3 player so I can use the aux cord#I fucking hate it here who killed my beautiful CD player#My wife... MY WIIIIIIIIIIIIIIFE#I've been personally victimized by entropy#I JUST BOUGHT A NEW LEONA LEWIS CD TOO#I'm too pretty to be dragged into the horrid world of bluetooth exclusive music playing

Everyone agrees that dongles suck ass and all that, yeah?
Besides that, a cheap pair of IEMs and an Apple USB-C to 3.5mm Adapter works amazingly with Poweramp.
#I know it's hip and all to have a dedicated device#But like it's genuinely cheaper and convenient to grab the dongle and Poweramp#the stupid dongle has Apple's DAC in it#Like the chip they use in all their wireless headphones and even in their USB headsets#And for what it's worth#Apple's audio game has always been the only respectable thing about their products#The entire package is cheaper than getting a cheap Bluetooth headset that will lose it's charging capacity in like a year#and cheaper than getting a dedicated music device#Even cheaper than a used iPod or MP3 Player since the market has really driven their value up#Like a pair of Salnotes Zeros and the dongle off of Amazon is like $50 CND#And the Salnotes go on sale regularly#Edit: This is like with the base assumption that most people have like a phone with a USB-C port#like the stupid dongle will be like a sigifigant upgrade for less than the price of a sandwitch#and will give most phones from the last half decade better audio than even a midtier entuiast device#even if it has a 3.5mm jack#the dongle will actually be just better if you want to dip into a better music listening experience
