MonkeyLotus + Lewis discover that they have become popular enough to gain a fan base. Lewis loses his shirt (heh) over the fact the he is a meme (in a good way). Ling goes on a rant about how he is an artists worst nightmare (hands? I got six of em’!) and Xuan saves countless videos and animatics. Fanfic is written. Fic is discovered. Chaos ensues. Xuan makes literal essays of thoughtful feedback. Ling subjects Lewis to a dramatic reading of poorly written smut. The internet knows no peace.

You and me, right now? We this 🤞🏼. Cause I've been on that SAME WAVELENGTH FAM. What started as a thought of "What if the review section existed in universe as a way for non-espers to safely and anonymously vent, criticise, praise, and/or make suggestions about the espers around?" And then, because it was a bunch of out-of-touch boomers who decided to make this a thing, they didn't even attempt to but any regulations on it asides from some basic censoring some curse words and body parts. So, imagine the older espers, like gen xers and older millenials, genuinely wanting to hear what people had to say about them MEANWHILE younger millenials and gen Z espers are like "FFUUUUUU- NOOOOOO!"

Cue the first ever espers union live reading of comments, and Li Ling just adamantly refusing to read a single one of his reviews. Tang Xuan is Lost™ and barely focused, Lewis is trying not to bust out laughing in front of the cameras.

Them discovering fandoms and stan content related to them would be equal parts terrifying (for content featuring themselves) and hilarious (for content about their friends).

Eventually, because the trio of them are such chill and go-with-the-flow type of dudes, they'll probably jump in and add to fandom chaos! I'm talking, more fan service, random social media posts quoting lines from pretty well known fanfics, Tang Xuan sharing a crap ton of art, especially ones featuring him and Li Ling with captions like "this could be us but you're playing 🤡", and saving anything nsfw featuring him to a private account "this could be us but you'd rather impale miramon😔". Li Ling actually gets upset when artists forgo his arms, hand-drawing difficulty be damned, "Ableist, all of them! >:(" "bro, wtf is up with you and ableism?? You just learn that word or somefin?" "Besides, you can get rid of your arms at any time, that's not a disability." "Yeah?? And?? Sometimes people in wheelchairs CAN walk, we ain't taking away their wheeling privileges tho" "... I... Mm. I don't like that that is, probably, an... Acceptable comparison. " "Nah, but hard agree, why tf does that make sense?!" "It's called self-advocacy🤌🏽✋🏽👍🏽 😌✌🏽✊🏽🤙🏽"

Lewis commissions artists to draw all sorts of posters and create shirts and what not for the Fire Fists. Tang Xuan makes weekly posts covering his favourite songs and gets super stoked when they're used in AMVs featuring him. Li Ling will not touch social media because of the amount of thirst comments he gets, but he also reads every single social media post he can find on himself and will make references to them.

And the memes. Oh LORD the memes. Once the Boys get a hold of them, it's over for the Union. Or, rather, it's over for the aged Union members and an all out war amongst the younger espers.

I'm pretty sure MM is going for the Gen Z crowd because she sees herself more as a 20 year old than a 40 year old. Shes living her fairy tale life, marrying a prince. It happens in movies, and it happened to her. But the woman in the movie was much younger.

I think alongside her body image issues. She's deeply insecure about her age. Especially when Harry's age gets brought up. She doesn't like the fact that shes 40, even more so when she doesn't feel that way. She hates the fact that she's the same age as Catherine, but Catherine has 10+ years in the royal family on her. I always found it interesting that MM style when on engagements was always more reflective of a 20-something influencer coming into a corporate job. Where as Catherine opted for coat dresses, which you don't really see in every day life. While we know outside of "work" Catherine loves long flowy dresses and sandals, she dresses young. It was such an opposite approach to work. One wanted to look way younger than she was, the other went for a style much older than she her self was.

I love reminding people that Meghan is older than William, Catherine and Harry :)

Continuity Errors

I just watched Blue Bloods S10 E19. In this episode it was revealed that Joe (Frank’s son who was killed in action fifteen months before S1 started) fathered a son with a woman he met at the Academy. Joe’s headstone stated that he was born 6th June 1977. He died shortly before his 32nd birthday (May 2009). At one point it was suggested that he was the eldest of the Reagan children, but the majority of the time it was implied that he was the middle child (older than Jamie, but younger than Danny and Erin.) One quick internet search revealed that 60 college credits or 2 years of military service is required to join the NYPD. You must be 21 years old to be an officer. So, Joe Junior should have been born in 1999. But apparently he’s 24 and a member of the firearms squad?! So are we to assume that Joe was in fact 18 years during their fling and his girlfriend Paula was three years older? It’s a major stretch-the timeline makes no sense.

It’s the same with so many shows I watch. Grey’s Anatomy is notorious for being timely-whimey. Teen dramas in particular are notorious for playing fast and loose with dates. In reality, I’m terrible at maths. But in terms of fictional worlds, I like to keep things logical. I’m a hard core fan and I have high standards. I like to think about these things sometimes, but I’ve never let it get in the way of enjoying a great content.

Of course, I know that this won’t change any time soon. Long-running shows go through numerous writers and producers over the years and new storylines are invented all the time with plenty of retcons. Authors mix up the rules of their own world. Sequels can be a law onto themselves.

Butt maybe things would be better if they kept character files for reference when developing props etc.

It is a little frustrating, especially when you are looking for details for your fanfiction. In terms of backstories here are some tips to maintain continuity, while improving characterisation in your own writing (original or otherwise.)

Write down the full name (given/middle/surname/nickname) and birthday of major characters (DD/MM/YY). What is their zodiac?Are they Milienial or Gen Z? What kind of music was playing at their first dance? What generational trends do they love/hate? Was their childhood years split between the analog and digital age? When did they first fall in love? What was their major and when did they graduate? When and where did they start work? When did they get married/engaged? When did they have kids? When did they move to their current house?

Place them in an international context. Did experiencing major historical moments in youth (wars/terrorism/recession/pandemic) influence their perspective on life? Do they have faith and which, if any, religious or cultural events play a key role in marking the passage of time?

Place them in family context. Are they the eldest, the middle or the youngest, if so, by how much? Did they have cousins of a similar age to hang around with?

Place them within the context of major events in the story. How old were they and what stage of life were they at? How long has it been since character X was in town?

Gravity Falls and Childhood.

Greetings and salutations, Gravity Falls fandom. My best contributions to you have been niche metas, here and here, on Ford’s arc in all its abjected glory. And now for something completely different. Something way broader.

Us late-stage Millennials (early Gen Z?) are supposedly all (re)learning that “growing old doesn’t mean growing up”, and all that Holden Caulfield kind of crap. I wouldn’t know; I outgrew my “kids’ media are whack” phase in elementary school. But I do know that Gravity Falls captures childhood uncommonly well.

This show presents the duality of one childhood summer. Much to its credit, Gravity Falls is secret society insignias and sun-dappled pinewoods and stargazing. It’s conspiracy boards, urban decay, and a sleepy town’s whisperings of the dangerous unknown... among other (and Other) phantasmagoria. But Gravity Falls is also neon 80s/90s kitsch and tourist trap grotesqueries and pop culture references (to Disney Channel’s 2000s movie lineup, even!). It’s friendship bracelets, glitter, and watermelon residue. That’s all nostalgic too... though hardly in keeping with the show’s rustic aesthetic.

I’ve praised the first half of this duality for presenting kid-friendly darkness and nuance we don’t see anywhere else... but the show’s next-biggest strength is its reinvention of tropes we see everywhere else. Of course its charming characters can revitalize anemic cartoon stock plots... but so can its heaps of absurdity. Because like, backwoods towns would legalize woodpecker marriage and elect mayors through some farcical avian ceremony. New Jersey would have Glass Shard Beach in its Lead Paint District. Conman caretakers, prosperity-gospel psychics, and robot-engineering hillbillies would exist in one town. The show helps today’s kids fathom our modern cultural melting-pot by being the pastiche my generation needed when we were younger.

Gravity Falls reflects the way kids mythologize the unique rules and rituals they use to navigate a world whose silliness is Serious Business. Dipper’s fixation on what is “technically a teen”, and Mabel’s on how much trick-or-treating they have left (also, the genetically-engineered boy band joke) in particular were directly stolen from my childhood. Trufax. Adult stability destabilizes this certainty, and children’s rituals are allways dangerously at odds with adults’ rules. Kids would explore abandoned convenience stores or “steal a pie off a windowsill”, in 2012 or “nineteen-sixty something”, because at no age in history or life does anyone obey the “No Loitering” signs at the existential or coming-of-age thresholds.

(I surely don’t need to debate you fine people on whether universal patterns underlie rites of passage, amirite? Joseph Campbell’s: Mm Mm Bliss.)

Growing up shifts one’s faith from imagination to information, and the show rightfully validates both. Just look at “Not What He Seems”, the pivotal episode about how lying to kids for their protection makes them imagine the worst of limited information until imagining better (“I trust you”) leads them to the truth. Danger is as necessary for growth as it is inevitable, and repressing it only enables it. Look at Stan and Ford’s arc, where two stubborn adults reconcile through childlike open-mindedness and mature compassion. Imagination and information have equal capacity for harm, and the truths their syntheses reveal are never simple... at least in my tunnel view. I’m cut myself on Occam’s Razor.

Easy answers collapse vis-à-vis mystery, a mortal draw universal and particular. We all want to be elsewhere, whether we admit it or not, so I’m glad this show’s elsewhere coincides with mine: urban legends, conspiracy, unreality, ghosts, cryptids, aliens. The gorgeous backgrounds are for those of us who love the Pacific Northwest, or nature in general. The Transcendentalists knew What Was Up, fam. Gravity Falls straightforwardly conveys the greatness of all these things I liked before I had the words to explain why, because my frame of reference was wire-thin and gender roles sure suck. Adulthood is sorting out the universal of the childhood moment from the particular, appreciating both all the more.

Did this show convince me to ~live in the moment~ before it’s gone forever? Not really. But it did take me back to those evening car rides where I’d chase my eye floaters across the rolling landscape and wonder what I couldn’t perceive beyond them, or astral project to some nonexistent neighborhood or woods or beach under the same sunset. Somewhere kids could play after hours, even after the hours extended into lifetimes. Maybe even after those hours, too,

It’s not razing the childhood framework, but staying grounded in it as its resonance changes yearly and you gravitate toward higher things -which puts the “fall” in Gravity Falls. In the paracosmic scheme of things, I’ve seen no better children’s cartoon except Over the Garden Wall. Summer’s over, but this meta series isn’t.
