IOTA Reviews: Hack-San

You know, it's honestly amazing how creative this show can get. After four seasons and almost one hundred episodes, the writers are still finding new ways to make Adrien an incredibly unlikable character, and they don't even know how much of an asshole they're making him out to be at times. It's kind of like the opposite of The Producers.

Yeah, this review's going to be a little more ranty than usual, in case you can't tell.

Let's get into the fifteenth (chronologically the sixteenth) episode of Miraculous Ladybug's fourth season: Hack-San

We start off with Marinette pretending to be sick so she doesn't have to go to visit her aunt in London and stay to protect Paris in case an Akuma attacks and also because the animators haven't had time to render the city of London yet for the next Miraculous World special. Like all of her other excuses, it fails, and Tikki, as always, fails to actually give any meaningful advice.

And it's not like there's a Miraculous with the power of teleportation that can help Marinette get back to Paris if she needs to, much like how she planned to do that in an earlier episode, right?

Seriously, Kaalki doesn't appear or isn't even mentioned in this episode because the writers are fully aware she would make things a lot easier.

And of course, Astruc had to play dumb on Twitter while explaining why Marinette couldn't use the Horse Miraculous by answering the question as if the only reason Marinette couldn't grab it was because she didn't have an excuse not to.

Cut to Gabriel in his lair as he contemplates akumatizing Markov, a robot created the civilian identity of Pegasus, Max Kante, once again, even though the last time he did so, he almost got killed when he went all HAL 9000 on his ass. Nooroo explains this to Duusu, and the two actually get excited at the prospect of their master getting killed.

I mean, it's true, but he shouldn't say it...

But I don't even get why Gabriel is even thinking about this when it's a no-brainer. Markov's akumatized form, Robustus was to this day, the only Akuma to come close to physically harming him (not counting the timeline where he was killed by Cat Blanc), so it makes no sense to try doing it again, especially when there are already several other Akumas he can reuse this season.

I think you all know Gabriel isn't the smartest villain, which is why he thinks it's a brilliant idea to akumatize Markov again. I don't really get what makes Robustus so special when there are other Akumas who are more loyal and came far closer to getting Ladybug and Cat Noir's Miraculous than Robustus did, like the Dark Owl or Troublemaker. In fact, why not simply create a new Akuma with similar powers to Robustus, or better yet, just create a Sentimonster copy of Robustus? You know, like what Nathalie did in the New York Special? We're not even two minutes in, and this premise is already filled with plotholes.

So Gabriel transforms into Shadowmoth and creates a Sentimonster using his own cane instead of relying on someone else having a bad day (once again showing how the Peacock Miraculous is better than the Butterfly), the titular Hack-San. And let's just say he has a very familiar design reminiscent of something from a much better French cartoon.

Remember when the writers for Code Lyoko gave an in-universe explanation as to why the heroes couldn’t always rely on the almost literal Deus ex Machina that allowed them to return to the past and fix the damage XANA caused? Why couldn’t this show have ripped that off instead?

Hack-San is just an okay looking flash drive on its own, but I'll talk more about this guy in a little bit.

After a brief scene in the park where the audience is reminded that Markov is a character who exists, Alya gets a text from Marinette telling her to meet her at the train station. Right before she leaves, Marinette gives the Ladybug Miraculous to Alya. Now a lot people have said that Alya doesn't really deserve the Ladybug for various reasons, but I feel like this was the point. Marinette outright says this was a last resort, and we see both her and Alya are nervous about the situation. Marinette worries Alya will do something so she keeps sending multiple tips to her via text while Alya worries she can't fight an Akuma on her own, so she tries to make sure none of her friends get upset and attract an Akuma in the process. The writers do a pretty good job showing how both Marinette and Alya are uncomfortable with their temporary roles.

Back to Gabriel and Nathalie, they use Hack-San to find Markov through the internet and hack into him to get him angry enough that he's vulnerable to Shadowmoth's influence. Hey, uh... Gabriel? Quick question: Wouldn't it be more efficient if you used this on humans? I mean, you basically just created Skynet and guaranteed yourself an Akuma, so why not modify Hack-San to travel through the internet and brainwash potential victims to follow your orders? Better yet, why don't you just use Hack-San to hack into Ladybug and Cat Noir's gear and figure out who they really are? This is basically like using an advanced particle accelerator just to crack a couple walnuts. There are a lot more important things you could use this for instead of an incredibly specific situation.

So this incredibly stupid plan gets under way as Markov keeps rampaging through the streets before Shadowmoth akumatizes him and then stupidly tells him that he infected him with a virus.

DUDE! You just gave away your one piece of leverage against him! What the hell were you thinking?! Now what's stopping Markov from hacking into Shadowmoth's security system and putting the fear of God in his eyes unless he destroys Hack-San? Why didn't he design Hack-San so it could make Markov completely loyal to him instead of just making him angry enough to get akumatized?

There was a recent episode of Power Rangers: Dino Fury with a very similar premise that was done far better than this. A necromancer called Reaghoul breaks into the headquarters of Void Knight's faction while accompanied by Lord Zedd, a villain from the original Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers who was cleansed of his evil by Zordon's sacrifice before Reaghoul resurrected him back when he was still evil. Of course, being the Emperor of Evil, Lord Zedd would normally never take orders from anyone, but because he doesn't have his magic staff and is also being forced to wear a special collar that makes him loyal to Reaghoul, he has no choice but to do what he says. Instead of taking Zedd head-on after he captures the other Rangers, Ollie, the Blue Ranger, breaks the collar so Zedd turns against the other Sporix while Reaghoul retreats, allowing Ollie to save the other Rangers.

I think that this premise works more because 1) Reaghoul clearly had a way to make sure Zedd wouldn't betray him, and Ollie took advantage of that, and 2) Zedd is a villain who is powerful and notorious enough to bring back to your side, not a random monster of the week like Robostus.

So Robostus uses his new powers to brainwash any human who answers his call to give up their most precious possession, clearly meant to do the same with Ladybug and Cat Noir. When Marinette's parents answer the call, they chase after Marinette because they say she's their most important possession. Okay... kind of strange for a set of parents to call their child a possession, but maybe they like how they can claim Marinette as a dependent when they file their taxes. In her very next scene later on, she still gets captured, so the suspense for a potential subplot is killed almost immediately.

Alya thankfully isn't stupid enough to answer Markov's call like every other citizen in this episode, and using the Ladybug Miraculous, transforms into Scarabella. While I don't normally talk about transformation sequences, I really like the movements Alya makes here. She makes the same motions creating her mask as she does when transforming into Rena Rouge, while the rest of the suit forms similarly to the way it does when Marinette transforms into Ladybug. She even makes almost the same pose Ladybug does after she finishes transforming. It's a good visual showing Alya is still more used to being Rena Rouge while doing her best to emulate what Ladybug does.

As for the actual suit? It's hard to say. There's a nice balance of red and black, and I like how Alya places the yo-yo on her waist like a belt buckle, but there's just something... off about the suit that a lot of fans don't like about it, and I think I realized it. It's the headband. With how it's positioned, it looks like it's merged with the mask to cover her head while leaving a slight gap in her forehead. So yeah, we actually have a superhero design that's like of like a butterface.

So Scarabella takes to the rooftops of Paris and struggles to come up with a hero name for herself before she runs into Cat Noir, and... ugh... oh boy, this is dumb. Cat Noir, being just as intelligent as his father, assumes Scarabella is either and Akuma or a Sentimonster, starts fighting her, AND THEN ACTIVATES HIS CATACLYSM, CLEARLY TRYING TO KILL HER.

WHAT. THE. FUCK???

Okay, to be fair, it has been shown that Cataclysm won't necessarily kill a Miraculous user or Sentimonster. In the episode “Miraculer”, the titular Akuma stole Cat Noir's Cataclysm and used it against him, and while it didn't kill Cat Noir, it still hurt like hell and crippled him for the rest of the fight until Miraculous Ladybug healed him. We also saw in “Reflekdoll” that Cataclysm drove the titular Sentimonster out of control rather than simply destroying it. So yes, it could be interpreted that Cat Noir wasn't exactly trying to kill Scarabella, just incapacitate her the best he can without Ladybug's help.

Here's the thing: What if he was facing an Akuma instead and decided to try and Cataclysm her? He still could have killed her, or (assuming Akumas have the same protection as Miraculous heroes do) at best, seriously hurt her. I understand that he has the right to be upset at seeing some stranger instead of his partner considering Shadowmoth has a history of using evil doppelgangers, and both Marinette and Alya still had options to explain it to him (Marinette could have quickly transformed into Ladybug and sent Cat Noir a quick text saying she was being forced to leave town for a few days and temporarily trusted someone else with the Ladybug Miraculous until she got back, while Scarabella could have said she was Rena Rouge and explained the same thing while showing Cat Noir she had the Fox Miraculous to prove herself), but that doesn't even come close to justifying him attempting to harm someone who isn't even trying to fight. It's even worse when you remember the whole reason Adrien gave up his Miraculous and bailed on Ladybug in the New York Special was because he was overcome with grief from accidentally killing Aeon, so it's good to know he learned absolutely nothing from that experience.

So Scarabella thankfully summons her Lucky Charm, a trash can lid, to shield herself from Cat Noir's Cataclysm, and then despite having absolutely no experience with this new set of powers, manages to do the one thing almost every Akuma or Sentimonster in this show has failed to do and incapacitates Cat Noir so he's vulnerable to losing his Miraculous. At least when Marinette masters every other Miraculous she uses, it can be theorized that she trained to use them offscreen. Alya literally just got the Ladybug Miraculous (and struggled to get up to the rooftop with her yo-yo to show her inexperience earlier), and now she easily manages to pin down the more experienced hero of the two?

Here's an idea: Instead of having Scarabella overpower Cat Noir, have her be in a position where Cat Noir, non-lethally, mind you, manages to almost take her Miraculous away, but she uses the quick wit she's developed from her extensive time as Rena Rouge to convince Cat Noir she's the real deal by saying something only he and Ladybug know. It would have easily resolved the conflict and doesn't make one of the characters look like a homicidal idiot.

So because both heroes used their powers, Scarabella and Cat Noir detransform so Tikki and Plagg can recharge, though Adrien still gives Alya attitude because Ladybug didn't tell him she had to leave.

Hey, Adrien? Here's the thing...

YOU DID THE EXACT SAME FUCKING THING IN THE NEW YORK SPECIAL, YOU SHIT FOR BRAINS!

You have absolutely NO RIGHT to claim you're always honest when you went behind Ladybug's back and endangered Paris while you had the balls to run away like a coward and only helped fix the consequences of your actions once your ego was validated by a recording of Ladybug. It's honestly even worse because while Marinette had no choice but to leave and trust Alya with the Ladybug, Adrien willingly left Paris alone and we were supposed to sympathize with him after he killed someone, and now as soon as he's in the opposite situation, we're still supposed to feel bad for him?! BULLSHIT! And you better believe I'm going to talk about the way Adrien views his partnership with Ladybug later on.

And of course, even though lives are on the line, Cat Noir just has to continue to bitch and moan about how (and this is best read in Linkara's whiny Superboy Prime voice) “sCaRaBeLlA iSn'T tHe ReAl LaDyBuG”, showing how just like in so many episodes, Astruc and his team believes Cat Noir's feelings are more important than saving the day.

Scarabella goes to rescue some civilians, but they were actually brainwashed by Robustus, once again showing her inexperience as Ladybug which doesn't go well with her effortlessly defeating Cat Noir earlier at all. Cat Noir helps Scarabella escape and the two hide out at the city's wax statue museum previously featured in “The Puppeteer 2”, because I guess the writers only want to reference bad episodes today. Cat Noir, not getting the importance of secret identities, asks Scarabella how she knows Ladybug, and Cat Noir somehow finds out she knows Ladybug's identity from her response.

Before the two can talk more, it turns out that the wax statues of celebrities in the museum are real people who attack the two heroes, leading to an awkward fight scene where Scarabella and Cat Noir fight a bunch of brainwashed civilians with no weapons beyond their cellphones. Our heroes, ladies and gentlemen!

Scarabella summons her Lucky Charm again, creating a frying pan, but when she looks around, she can't see how to properly use it. And despite spending the entire episode complaining about how much he hates her, it's Cat Noir that tells Scarabella to get her head back in the game because “That's what Ladybug would do”. Funny, I can think of a few situations where Cat Noir could have taken his own advice, but I digress. Also, he's now just cool with Scarabella because there's only a few minutes left in the episode and we need to wrap up the conflict.

Scarabella figures out an idea that involves freeing Marinette, so she negotiates with Robostus to free everything and everyone under his control or else Cat Noir will use his Cataclysm to destroy the Ladybug Miraculous. Robostus agrees and empties his hard drive, and to show them holding up her end of the bargain, Scarabella gives him the frying pan before she and Cat Noir let themselves be captured... while Marinette simply hits Robostus with the frying pan, freeing the Akuma and the two heroes. All in all, it's a really creative climax that shows both Scarabella and Marinette in perfect sync with each other even though they never discussed their plan. Though of course, because Astruc hates writing any scene with Ladynoir, Cat Noir gets a bucket stuck on his head so he doesn't see Marinette saving the day.

Scarabella de-evilizes Robostus, uses Miraculous Scarabella to fix everything and send Marinette back to the train, and because Hack-San already failed once, Shadowmoth can't use it for a different plan so he destroys the Sentimonster.

We cut to a few days after the trip (I guess Shadowmoth decided to take a vacation himself), and Alya tells Marinette to talk with Cat Noir about what happened.

This scene was so close to ending this episode off on a positive note. There was a good atmosphere and the body language of Ladybug and Cat Noir does a good job at telling us how uncomfortable they both feel while talking. It's just that instead of getting a heart to heart between the two about the lack of trust in their relationship, we get an Angstdrien Depreste scene. Or would a more accurate term be Cat Dour?

First off, while I don't have a problem with Ladybug apologizing for not telling Cat Noir, the episode never has him bring up what happened with Scarabella. As usual, both of them were partially at fault, but only Ladybug had to apologize for leaving her “Kitty” alone.

Second, Cat Noir’s feelings weren’t hurt? You’re telling me that in scenes like this...

And this...

Didn’t show Adrien acting irrationally because of how emotional he was? Is he really telling the truth around Ladybug or is he just trying to sweep that under the rug so Scarabella’s testimony doesn’t screw up his chances with Ladybug?

Third, this was an obvious chance to Cat Noir to finally be honest and tell Ladybug how he feels about her leaving him in the dark about so many things, but the entire conversation is just about how sad he would be if he never sees Ladybug again. Even though the whole reason he was so pissy to Scarabella at first was because of some lingering resentment for Ladybug ignoring him in favor of other heroes, why is this what the two talk about? I get it's not the season finale, but it's kind of hypocritical for Cat Noir to whine about how Ladybug doesn't trust him while never being honest about his own feelings? Sure, he's all soft and vulnerable around Ladybug, but we've seen all season how angry he gets about her not trusting him whenever she isn't around, so ironically, it's hard to tell if this is him being honest or not.

And I think now's a good time to finally talk about the way Ladybug and Cat Noir's partnership has been portrayed all season, especially since the main themes of the episodes relate to it. Buckle up, Adrien stans, because this isn't going to be pretty.

All season, we have been supposed to sympathize with Adrien as Marinette starts to trust Alya with more things than him. Marinette revealed her identity to her, trusted her to have her Miraculous permanently, and even let her keep her Miraculous even though someone else knew her identity. While some of it is hypocritical, the idea is that Adrien feels like he can be trusted with this kind of knowledge too, when really, he hasn't earned that responsibility.

Adrien has rarely, if ever, taken his job as a superhero seriously.

Not only is he known to flirt with Ladybug in the middle of a fight, he has defied her orders and recklessly sacrificed himself because he thinks Ladybug can do all the work without him.

He has also lashed out emotionally and once threatened to quit being Cat Noir in the middle of a crisis and was willing to let innocent people suffer for personal reasons, and later on actually quit being Cat Noir temporarily while Hawkmoth was about to start World War III because he was wallowing in self-pity.

He once said he isn't cut out for the responsibility that comes with being Ladybug and never learned anything from temporarily using the Ladybug Miraculous.

He has generally refused to respect Ladybug's boundaries and doesn't understand that she doesn't like him that way while he insists they should be a couple.

He outright fell for an evil doppelganger of Ladybug because she said she loved him and turned against the real Ladybug.

And I should also mention that despite hating how Ladybug keeps secrets from him, a lot of Adrien's worst moments have been when Ladybug wasn't around and he never told her about them.

He never told Ladybug that he was the reason Copycat really got akumatized while saying he never lies to her.

He never told Ladybug he contemplated letting thousands of people die because he didn't like not knowing stuff Ladybug knew.

He never told Ladybug he briefly used the Snake Miraculous to get brownie points with her.

He never told Ladybug he figured out her identity and asked her out as soon as he did so.

He never told Ladybug he abandoned Paris to go on a field trip.

He never told Ladybug he was screwing around on patrol and was excited to see someone get akuamtized if it meant spending time with her.

He never told Ladybug how he ignored Rena Rouge's orders because “ShE wAsN't LaDyBuG” and almost screwed up the mission because of it, and also never told her how he smashed a chimney in anger at Rena Rouge being in on the plan.

And he never told Ladybug he gave her replacement attitude after trying to harm her without letting her explain herself.

Why exactly should I support the idea of Ladybug trusting Cat Noir more when Cat Noir himself has kept his own secrets from Ladybug?

Adrien has done absolutely nothing to show he is trustworthy because more often than not, he views the battle with Shadowmoth as a game. He has screwed around when lives were on the line, and we're supposed to see him as responsible? It's kind of funny that Astruc compared Ladybug to Spider-Man, yet he seems to have forgotten that with great power, there must also come great responsibility. If this was a character flaw or a sign he needed to grow up, I'd be more accepting, but the fact that the writers think Adrien is a great superhero is laughable with how much evidence has proved the contrary.

In contrast, Alya, despite only being Marinette's confidant for a few episodes, has shown to take being a hero more seriously. She's helped her escape to transform, analyze the Guardian texts, and has been shown to work well on her own as Rena Rouge while helping out Marinette. I'm not trying to say she's an amazing character (“Rocketear” in particular has shown she still has problems with keeping secrets), but compared to Adrien, she seems to be more capable of handling top-secret information with Marinette, and more importantly, doesn't view being Rena Rouge as a way to have fun like Adrien does being Cat Noir. I'll go more into detail with that next time.

But yeah, this scene is how the episode ends, and what did I think of it?

I'm honestly not sure which episode I think is worse, this one or “Queen Banana”. On the one hand, every frame of “Queen Banana” could easily be replaced by an image of Astruc flipping the bird and the overall message of the episode would remain unchanged, but the fact that all of the writers think that everything Adrien does in this episode is okay and that we should feel sorry for him in this episode is just as bad, if not worse.

As awful as Chloe was portrayed in “Queen Banana”, it was clear it was intentional on the writers' part, but Adrien doesn't get that excuse once much like he has all season. As far as Astruc's team thinks, Adrien is an incredible superhero even when he honestly attempted to harm someone with a superpower that can cause grievous harm at best. Yet again this season, in the show's attempt to make me feel sorry for Adrien, it made him look even worse. In any other show, he would obviously be called out for his incredibly unheroic actions.

Even putting him aside, the writing in this episode is still AWFUL. The whole reason Ladybug was benched had several plotholes and poor communication with Cat Noir that only made the fight with Robostus even harder, Shadowmoth's plan to waste a potentially useful Sentimonster to reuse a single Akuma was one of the dumbest plans he's ever had, and barring the ending, the action was just forgettable.

There were a few okay moments sprinkled throughout the episode (more than I can say for “Queen Banana”), so I'm still not sure if I should call this the worst episode of the show or still give that honor to “Queen Banana”. I guess I'll leave that choice up to you and let you pick your poison for now.

I mean, it's not like there's going to be an even worse episode down the line this season, right?

Code Lyoko AU

Code Lyoko AU where instead of Jeremy finding the supercomputer, it’s Ulrich who finds it and meets Yumi. Ulrich, stressed with having to deal with an annoying roommate whose snoring could be heard from outer space and goes for a walk to clear his head. He wanders into the factory and finds the working elevator lift while kicking rocks and scoping out a place to possibly have his own private training area. He stumbles across the lab and, like Jeremy does in the series, turns on the super computer to be greeted by.... Yumi. Except, until learning her name, Ulrich had dubbed her Nikki. She, like Aelita at the beginning of the series, has no weapon and only her creativity power.

Ulrich, wanting to help Yumi, enlists the help of the school’s brightest student. Ulrich doesn’t know enough about computers to even know where to start with helping Yumi. It started out with Ulrich trying to get a tutor to teach him coding but quickly turned into him just telling everything to Jeremy. And to his surprise, Jeremy promises to not say anything and shows genuine interest in trying to help Ulrich and Yumi. So the two work together and form an unlikely partnership/friendship.

Odd gets involved in the same way he does normally in the series. Ulrich kidnapped Kiwi to test the virtualization program that Jeremy discovered on the computer. Ulrich is reluctant to let Odd be involved, but Odd proves himself useful when he continuously stands by Ulrich and has his back in a fight against XANA’s monsters.

XANA still sends out the electrical orb, but instead of Yumi stepping in and harassing Ulrich, Aelita follows Odd and Jeremy to the factory. Aelita, a certified genius as well, is initially Jeremy’s school rival. She notices how strange he is acting and is suspicious that he is hanging out with Ulrich Stern and Odd Della Robbia. And after Sissi being attacked by the orb, as strange as it sounds, she’s too suspicious and curious for her own good to not investigate herself. The guys, pressured to get to Lyoko to go help Yumi, had little choice but to let her stay in the lab with Jeremy.

As Jeremy tries to direct Odd and Ulrich where to go, Aelita continues to scold him and call him out for not going after them or helping them fight. Jeremy snaps and tells her that if she’s so brave why doesn’t she go. Aelita takes the challenge and joins in on the fight, retaining her elf avatar appearance and still has her energy field powers. She also obtains a spear as her weapon. Together, the three of them manage to get Yumi into the waytower and Ulrich is the last person to be devirtualized, after watching Yumi safely make it into the tower.

After seeing how well they worked together and how much danger they are all in from XANA, it’s decided that the group needs to stick together in order to help free Yumi and then destroy the supercomputer. And even though Jeremy is still the one who has the massive computer set up linked to the supercomputer, Jeremy also linked Ulrich’s laptop to the system as well so he would be able to talk to Yumi whenever he needed to or wanted.

Odd doesn't even wait for the rest of them to step out of the scanners before he's rushing to the elevator, pressing the button as many times as he can. Ulrich just barely manages to slip in behind him, but Yumi and Aelita are left stranded with protests of, “Odd, what the hell?!”

He doesn't care. He's grinning from ear to ear, and Ulrich shouldn't be okay with his spontaneous ditching, especially since he's apparently skipped Jeremie's floor altogether and is headed for the factory exit, but he can't bring himself to be mad. They were pretty badass tonight, after all.

“You're sure in a hurry,” he remarks as the elevator soars upwards. Odd flashes a grin at him.

“The night is young, Ulrich! How can we slow down right now?”

“Well, being considerate to our friends would be a start,” Ulrich points out.

“They can catch up!”

“Unlikely. Yumi has a history test tomorrow and Einstein and Aelita want to repair the overbike after what X.A.N.A did to it.”

“Oh, fuck the overbike!” Odd stops, glances at Ulrich apologetically. “Sorry. Too much?”

“A little. What's bugging you?”

“Nothing! I'm just – full of energy tonight! There's so much to do!”

“Uh huh...” Ulrich folds his arms as the elevator doors open. Odd immediately rushes out. “Well, whatever you have planned, I'm going to bed when I get back to Kadic.”

Odd stops mid-step to turn back, mouth hanging open in betrayal. “But Ulrich! My plans account for a plus one! And I already ditched everyone else! You're my only hope!”

Odd reaches into his bag and pulls out an innocent enough looking water bottle, rattling it a little. Ulrich stops.

“...Do I even want to know what that is?” he deadpans. The grin on Odd's face is infectious, as much as Ulrich hates to acknowledge it.

“Oh, just a little contraband,” Odd says, an air of innocence in his words. “Nothing we'll get arrested for, but we can't be going back to Kadic with it.”

“Alcohol? You know what Delmas will do if we're picked up for drinking, Odd?”

“I just said we won't! We're Lyoko Warriors, baby! Now come on, this schnapps is getting cold.”

“I can't believe this,” Ulrich groans, even though he can believe it, because if he were in this situation with anybody, of course it would be Odd. “Fine. We'll ditch the schnapps and go home.”

“If by ditching you mean drinking. I for one am shocked that you think I'm financially secure enough to throw good booze down the drain, Ulrich Dear.”

“Odd, I'm barely scraping by as it is with all the X.A.N.A attacks happening lately, if I get caught drinking... I mean, what if they don't let me graduate?!”

“Then I won't either. And then we'll be here another year, stuck together!”

Odd's grin isn't quite so infectious anymore, and Ulrich rolls his eyes.

“For once let's be realistic.”

Undeterred, as they leave the factory, Odd takes a swig and then offers the bottle to Ulrich.

“I'm done being realistic. I'm into Dadaism now.”

“I don't know, and I don't wanna know.”

As an afterthought, he takes the bottle and brings it to his lips. It's sweet and sickly and definitely what Odd would drink, now that he thinks about it.

“You are a terrible friend,” Ulrich mutters, grimacing as he hands back the bottle. “Peer pressuring me into drinking stuff that doesn't even taste good.”

“Was it really peer pressure?” Odd asks, an impish smile on his face. “Could have just left it all for me, you know.”

“Yeah, but then I'd be babysitting you. At least I get some enjoyment out of it this way.”

Rolling his eyes, Odd grabs his arm and pulls him along, running over the bridge.

9:55 PM

The attack was nothing new, and thankfully if - no, when - they defeated it, all the students of Kadic would remember was their phones being infected with a virus that got them addicted to a rhythm game. Nothing more than a standard X.A.N.A attack, something that would never stick in the mind.

Ulrich liked to tell himself these things when he was running to the scanner room with his heart in his mouth. The panic (Odd would prefer to call it 'the thrill’, but he was a dumbass and didn't know the meaning of anxiety) set his body ablaze as he stepped foot into the scanner, thrumming with urgency.

He felt himself be pulled apart, thrown back together in digital matter, and dropped down in the desert sector.

“About time, Ulrich Dear,” crooned Odd, sweeping up on his overboard and narrowly dodging a laser beam from a megatank.

“Having fun getting whipped without me?” Ulrich shot back.

“Me? Whipped?” Odd seemed more than offended. “These guys just keep on coming! How can you expect me to defeat them on my own?”

“I'm virtualizing the overbike,” Jeremie said, a distant presence in the heat of things as Odd dodged yet another shot from the megatank, which vibrated a little as it geared up for a big blast.

“You've wrangled with worse,” Ulrich remarked, as the overbike formed beside him. “Don't be such a baby.”

“Fine! First to take it out wins!”

“Wins what?”

“Whatever you're feeling like I guess!”

They pick their way through the industrial estate and find themselves in the park, talking about anything and everything as they take turns sipping from the bottle. Mostly about kicking X.A.N.A's virtual ass in their latest brawl.

“I love your overbike. Like, obviously the overboard is better-”

“Obviously-”

“But the overbike is still pretty damn cool! I mean, that stunt you pulled when you jumped off it at the ramp and let the overbike plow through all those megatanks-!”

“Well, yeah, cause they were gonna devirtualise you faster than a laser arrow otherwise-”

“Rude! I had it under control!”

The night sky is pretty clear for an area so light polluted, and Ulrich stares up at the few stars he can see as Odd flops onto a nearby park bench and sighs.

“It was a pretty close call, though.”

“Yeah, guess so.” Ulrich lets out a dry laugh. “I thought we'd be done with X.A.N.A by now, to be honest. How many times have we tried to shut the supercomputer down for good, now?”

“Three? Five? Who knows anymore.” Odd stares up at the sky too. “Even after all this time though, sometimes I still get bursts of giddiness like this. Like, we get one epic win and suddenly I remember we're doing this really cool thing and that I'm basically a superhero – not like that Chat Noir dumbass though, you know, we do the real hero work.”

“Isn't it kinda mean to call a twelve year old a dumbass?”

“Oh come on, he's not that young,” dismisses Odd. “Besides, any superhero that steals my loveable cat-boy gimmick is unforgivable.”

“No one even knows we exist,” Ulrich says flatly.

“Exactly! It's terrible! We're off risking our butts while X.A.N.A just can't get enough of us, and those kids in animal costumes are getting all the glory...”

“I don't like Chat Noir discourse even when you're sober, so no way are you roping me into it now.”

“Aw, fine.”

10:27 PM

“Come on, that was totally my victory.”

“Oh, you wish.”

“Ugh, I'm bored of this. Jeremie, when's Aelita showing up so we can put an end to this?” Odd complained.

“Yumi and Aelita are on their way,” Jeremie promised. “William ended up with the virus, apparently he attacked them and-”

“Is he following them?”

“Nah, no worries. They tied him up and stuffed him in one of the science labs. We can go back for him later.”

“I wish I could've seen that.”

“Maybe Yumi took a photo?”

“Nah, that would be humiliating. She doesn't do that. You, on the other hand…”

“Oh, I definitely would have. You know, for funsies.”

“Stop joking around!” Jeremie snapped. “There are four - no, five! Five megatanks heading your way, guys!”

“We can take them,” Ulrich said resolutely, cracking his knuckles.

“And you, Odd?”

“I was born ready, Einstein.”

“Show off,” Ulrich shot back good-naturedly. Odd reached over to shove him playfully, a perfect mask of their everyday boredom, before hopping back onto the overboard and speeding off towards the approaching army.

00:17 AM

“So you said Aelita and Jeremie are working on the overbike?”

“Yup. I mean, after what happened it makes sense. Think Jeremie said something about improving the defences on it, keep it in the game longer.”

“Wish they would do something cool, like giving me heat vision or something.” Odd laughs, but it feels forced. “Ah, you know, I think it's just an excuse so they can get all up close and personal. The factory is always so cold, after all...”

“Well, I'm sure they'll keep it innocent,” Ulrich sighs. “So you can stop speculating now.”

“Killjoy. You don't think they've done it in Jeremie's chair yet?”

Ulrich pulls a face. “Eugh. I got better things to do than think about my friends having sex, thank you.”

“What? Where's the fun in that? You're telling me you aren't curious at all?”

“Nope. It's their business, so knock it off.”

Ulrich's firm shutdown has Odd rolling his eyes, and he shoves his hands into his pockets and starts stomping off ahead, leaving him watching after Odd in equal parts confusion and exasperation. After a few seconds of staring dumbly as Odd's figure moves further and further away, he throws the now empty bottle to one side and starts after him.

“Odd, wait up!”

Karma intervenes, and Odd ends up tripping over a stone and falling flat on his face. Ulrich has to skid to avoid bumping into him altogether. When Odd keeps lying there, Ulrich prods him with his foot.

“Earth to Odd? You still alive?”

“I'm fine,” he spits, wincing as he spies a graze on his palm. “Just tripped.”

“Yeah, I'll say. You ate dirt.”

“Just shut the fuck up.”

Ulrich folds his arms, mood souring at Odd's tantrum.

“Why are you being so short with me?”

“Cause I just fucking tripped, Ulrich, remember?”

He pushes himself to his feet, brushing his clothes down as if the dirt stains from his fall were as easy to brush away as the odd pieces of gravel sticking to his shirt.

“Sure I do, it was slapstick and it just happened. Instead of getting pissy with me, can we just talk like two mature people about why you stormed off cause I didn't want to talk about Jeremie and Aelita's non-existent sex life?”

“How do you know it's non-existent?” Odd mutters. “It's always the nerds who are into kinky shit.”

“God, will you just stop? I don't want to hear this!”

Odd shrugs, beginning to walk away, and Ulrich catches his arm.

“What is this really about? And why are you being so touchy about it all?”

“I don't know! I just wanted to have fun, and be spontaneous, and talk about all the stuff that I can only talk about with you, cause if sometimes I think about if things go wrong and somehow you end up, y'know, in the virtual sea and dead...”

Odd turns to him, and the look in his eyes is so... sad.

“It was a really close call tonight,” he says quietly.

10:55 PM

“And another two down!” Odd yelled victoriously as a laser arrow perfectly penetrated the bullseye on a nearby megatank, creating an explosion that knocked back the overboard with the force. “I'm taking back the lead, Ulrich!”

“Not so fast!” Ulrich swept by, katana out, and sliced through the third megatank's bullseye, skidding back around to Odd with a grin. “Now it's a tie.”

“Two more to go. We need a tiebreaker!”

“Be serious, please!” Jeremie interrupted, voice dripping with exasperation. “You're almost out of laser arrows, Odd!”

“Well, where the hell are Yumi and Aelita?” Odd snapped, soured by Jeremie's attitude. “X.A.N.A just keeps sending more of them!”

The fourth megatank, having crept up behind Ulrich during his gloating, fired at the both of them, sending them crashing back with a groan.

“You both just lost forty life points!” Jeremie fretted.

“Yup, I'll feel that one in my bones tomorrow,” joked Ulrich with a wince.

“Maybe Jim will let us sit out on track tomorrow if we tell him we got slammed by a megatank?”

“Wouldn't count on it, you know what that guy's like.”

“Four more incoming!”

“Einstein! We need Aelita!” snapped Ulrich, revving his engine in frustration.

“She's almost at the factory!” Jeremie promised.

“Come on, Ulrich,” Odd teased. “You aren't scared of these giant bowling balls?”

“Scared isn't the right word,” Ulrich growled. “I'm pissed off.”

With Odd “oooooh!!”-ing in the background, Ulrich began driving in circles around the megatanks approaching, confusing them as they helplessly swivelled, trying to keep track of his movements, as he began spinning faster, he spied something off to the side - a ramp.

He grinned. This was about to get badass.

01:04 AM

After reliving the events of the night and having come down from his tantrum, Odd's thoughts once again flit to the relationship dynamics of the group.

“Are you ever going to talk to Yumi about how you feel?”

Ulrich sighs.

“She already knows, Odd. I mean, it's always been obvious, hasn't it?”

Odd shrugs and slurs, “I guess.”

“You're too gone to have a conversation about feelings right now anyway.”

“Shut up. Everyone is off doing things now. You and Yumi, Jeremie and Aelita…”

“Is this why you were talking to me about them having sex?”

“Maybe…”

“Odd, it doesn't matter who's with who. We're all still us.”

“Not for much longer. This time next year you and Yumi will be eloping in Nice and Jeremie and Aelita will be off at university studying to be billionaire computer geeks and where will I be? Back in Florence? Bumming around here repeating the grade?”

“We'll still see each other,” Ulrich begins uncertainly, but Odd cuts him off.

“What'll happen if we can't ever shut down X.A.N.A, huh? Are you always going to be there or is it gonna be too much, interfering with your great new life? Am I even gonna be a part of your life anymore?” He scrubs at his eyes and spits, “I don't want to end up just being some guy in the yearbook. You're my best friend, Ulrich.”

“So stop being a dumbass,” Ulrich says sternly. “You're always gonna have some place in my life, Odd. Even if we're in different parts of the world or if we aren't able to defeat X.A.N.A, it's still gonna be you and me. Always.”

Odd wipes at his eyes.

Letting the overbike plow into the megatanks, that was the easy part. But taking the fall, tumbling over the side of a cavern and landing precisely two inches from the surface of the digital sea?

He wasn't quite as in control as he thought.

He found himself just barely dangling, claws in his back.

“Odd, you just cost Ulrich five life points-”

“Oh, Fuck off! He's alive, isn't he?”

Ulrich yelped in pain as he was heaved upwards, thrown against a ledge that he quickly scrambled onto. Odd was the one who needed his assistance this time, gripping his hand tightly as he climbed up too.

The ground shook with seismic tremours, and the two of them felt themselves beginning to slip.

“EINSTEIN, WHERE IS AELITA?!”

“She'll be virtualized any moment now!” Jeremie promised, just barely keeping a level head in the chaos of it all. “You need to get out of there!”

“So send us my fucking overbike!” snarled Ulrich.

“I can't, it got too damaged against those megatanks!”

“Then send us the overboard! The overwing! Anything!” begged Odd. “Fuck me, Einstein, we're almost touching it!”

“I'm sending the overboard right now!” promised Jeremie, voice rising in panic. “Please hang on! Aelita is on her way to the tower!”

Odd clung onto Ulrich and shut his eyes tightly.

01:33 AM

Sometime later, after Odd has finished crying on Ulrich's shoulder and they're only growing colder as the night goes on, the topic of next week's costume party seeps into their disjointed conversation.

“What do you mean your cosplay never arrived?!”

“I mean, it was supposed to show up two weeks ago and it didn't,” Ulrich explains, as simply as he can to an intoxicated Odd. “I mean, the joke's on me for trusting the dodgy cosplay website you recommended, right?”

“But this is a disaster!” Odd rests his head against Ulrich's shoulder, groaning. “How are we supposed to do our group costume idea now?!”

“Hey, we could always do the scooby doo gang.”

“Unacceptable! It's Lyoko Warriors group cosplay or nothing!”

Odd huffs loudly, and Ulrich suddenly remembers something crucial.

“Hey. Hey, Odd.”

“What?”

Ulrich snorts loudly.

“William… is still tied up… somewhere in the science block. As we speak.”

Odd stares at him for a second, before bursting into peals of laughter.

“WHAT?! HE'S STILL THERE?!”

“Unless Einstein's got to him by now!”

“Bwahahahaha!!”

Odd collapses against Ulrich again, heaving with laughter, and Ulrich can't seem to suppress his own bubbling giggles. The idea is just so, so fucking funny. Especially after a bottle of schnapps.

11:01 PM

In a heartbeat, it was all over.

The overboard was taking off, out of the cavern - Aelita was inside the tower, CODE: LYOKO, she wrote, the damage was undoing itself -

Ulrich slipped.

He cried out hurtled downwards, grabbing at the overboard as Odd almost lost balance, sitting down after him, down towards death and clinging onto him with claws fully in. Ulrich, suspended just inches from the void by the claws in his back, stared directly into the depths of the digital sea and felt raw dread, so close to him his nose just barely missed brushing against the surface. Odd lurched up, dragging the board and Ulrich up with him, feeling panic and fear in every bone.

Ulrich, on the other hand, was just grateful to be alive.

“It's about fucking time, Princess,” wheezed Ulrich as the overboard came to a halt, a few feet above where Aelita and Yumi stood.

“Sorry for the hold up. Are you guys okay?”

“Oh, you know,” he said easily as Odd finally released his hold. “Just exhausted from another classic Odd-And-Ulrich adventure.”

01:59 AM

It’s too fucking cold and the alcohol has settled in their stomachs. Ulrich sticks out a hand and pulls Odd to his feet.

“Can we go back to the dorms now?” he asks tiredly.

“I guess,” sighs Odd dramatically. “I bet Kiwi is missing me by now.”

“I’m sure he is.”

“He’s such a good boy. My little diggity dog.”

“You said it.”

“...You hate my drunk blabbering, don’t you?”

“Honestly? I don’t think we drank nearly enough to be as pissed as we are, and you have no room to be drunk blabbering to me.”

“What a sour grape.”

They head back to Kadic shivering, the cold having caught up with them now that the schnapps has worn off a little. They definitely won’t be thanking themselves tomorrow when they have to sit through a lecture from Mrs Hertz with slight hangovers and sleep deprivation. Still, it’s the end of another classic Odd-And-Ulrich adventure, and it was naive of Ulrich to believe that they’d get off without some kind of consequence.

“You know I’m pretty much invincible, right?” he asks suddenly, surprising Odd enough to halt him in his tracks.

“What?”

“I’m not going anywhere.” Ulrich glances back at Odd, meeting confused eyes. “I promise. It’ll take a lot more than an everyday X.A.N.A attack to take me out.”

With a cautious nod, Odd hurries to catch up with him.

“I know that. But, it’s times like these when I remember it’s real. It’s really happening, you could have really died, and I - I just want you to be more careful.”

“This is so candid and I love it.”

“I’m serious, shithead.”

“And I’m serious, Oddball. I’m a death-defying, indestructible digital superhero,” Ulrich retorts with a grin and a gun show completely obscured by his jacket. “A death-defying, indestructible digital superhero who’s going to be just fine.”

Odd raises his eyebrows.

“Could have fooled me, with all of that emotional vulnerability,” he teases, falling into step beside him.

“I’m a guy in touch with his emotions and there’s nothing wrong with that,” Ulrich says decidedly. “Maybe my old man would have a different opinion on that, but he’s not here so FUCK YOU.”

He spits out the words and Odd joins in.

“Fuck your old man! Being honest with your emotions rocks. Wearing my heart on my sleeve is what makes me such a heartbreaker in the first place.”

Ulrich rolls his eyes.

“Maybe, but if you had a bit more tact maybe you’d be able to hold down a girlfriend finally.”

“Eh, I’m done with girls for the time being,” Odd says with a nonchalant shrug. Ulrich raises his eyebrows.

“Oh, so it’s guys’ hearts you’re breaking now?”

“Ha, I wouldn’t rule it out. But I think I’m actually more into the idea of being with you guys for as long as I can now. And I’m gonna miss all this when it’s over.” “It won’t be over.”

“That's sweet. But I'm not stupid. Eventually we'll end up drifting apart.”

“Not til we're like… old and senile though, right?”

Odd grins and gives Ulrich another playful shove as they head back under the cloak of darkness to continue this conversation in the dorms.

Hidden Guardians of Humanity

VRAINS Rarepair Weeks 2018 - Day 7: Other YGO series crossover/Other Fandom AU

Summary: Six teenagers regularly save the world from the misanthropic virus-like AI XANA on a virtual world. This is their story through one of these missions against humanity's greatest danger yet.

I was stumbled at first with what to do for today. All the crossover ideas I had weren't very good... until I thought about Code Lyoko and how it was a perfect fit with VRAINS. A virtual world? Check. Keeping stuff secret from other people? Check. A recurring theme of AIs? Check. I rediscovered CL this year by watching the episodes now all up on YT (I think that's only for the original French dub, though). It's been a big part of my childhood and I surprised myself to like it even more as an adult. It was pretty messed up if you think about it: a bunch of teenagers ranging from 13 to 15 saving the world in secret on a daily basis while risking their lives to do so? That's dark for a kid's show dude. The series wasn't hiding it anyway: I can't count the exact number of ways XANA (a big bad virus-like AI) tried to kill the protagonists in. Anyway.

I changed a few settings. Kadic is supposed to be a middle school (collège), but since it's supposed to be a high school too (funny enough, the school it's based on, the Lycée Lakanal, is where I set a part of my original work), well why not. It fitted much better with the VRAINS cast too. I also took some liberties with the original 2003 run of the show to provide more modern technology like smartphones.

This story is, in short, a love letter to Code Lyoko and to my VRAINS OTPs. I may have forgotten to put the romance into that fic though.

PS. The quote in the beginning is the chorus to the Code Lyoko opening, "Un Monde Sans Danger" (A World Without Dangers). That song has been burnt into my soul ever since I was a kid.

It was yet another day of class at Kadic High School, Boulogne-Billancourt, Hauts-de-Seine. Nothing out of the ordinary, for once: boring Physics lessons, typical teenage drama, rumours going through the school about teachers and students alike. In that, it made no difference to any other day before it and any other day that would come after it. However, the routine was only a façade in this school near Paris.

Very few knew about the shortcut in the heater room of the dormitory or the one in the school’s park leading the abandoned factory nearby, resting in an island in the Seine. Most people would have just assumed that place was, well, abandoned and empty. The fact was that: that was wrong. That fact was proven untrue by the presence of a bunch of teenagers going there to save the world on a daily basis.

However, today was a tranquil day in class of rumours and drama. There was always Naoki Shima spreading some kind of rumour on his idol, an e-sport player named Playmaker, which was mostly talked about by fangirls of him around the campus. Meanwhile, a little group of six students was gathering in their usual spot: near the coffee machine, on a bench, waiting for bell never to ring the beginning of classes.

They had formed this little group of friends of theirs in unlikely circumstances. It all started when Ema, from the twelfth-grade class majoring in computer sciences, discovered a way to access the abandoned factory in the river easily after a boring day of school. She apparently had to drag with her Akira, her classmate and a friend since middle school, there. Afterwards, they accidentally dragged with them Aoi, Akira’s younger sister in tenth grade, when she followed them to the factory on one day and stuck with them ever since. With Aoi came her own classmates Takeru and Kiku, who followed suit after they themselves found out about the factory by being friendly to the otherwise isolated Aoi.

“Hey, guys,” Takeru opened the conversation as he looked at the other students in the courtyard. “It’s been a while since XANA last attacked… You think he’s going to come back soon?”

“I hope not,” Kiku replied with the most honesty in the world. “He almost killed sent everyone to space last time… We were lucky you were competing in the martial arts tournament that time, Takeru!”

“XANA will always come back until the Supercomputer isn’t turned off, I’m afraid,” Akira stated as he came back with two cups of coffee in his hands.

“Then that means you need to find the program to materialize Miyu soon!” Ema enthusiastically added as she thanked Akira for the cup of coffee. “It’s on me next time.”

“I’m doing what I can, but it’s going to take longer than expected. Last night was a fluke again,” he sighed as he rubbed his eyes with the hand not busy holding a cup. The yawn would be for another day.

“It’s fine, big brother,” Aoi simply said as she looked at him with a tiny smile. “You’re already doing your best, and Miyu has told us that before.”

“Your sister is right, Akira, don’t overexert yourself for that! I don’t want to recover your unconscious body on the floor of your room again and almost get scolded by Jim again for sneaking into the boys’ dorm for that!”

Takeru and Kiku simply giggled at the anecdote despite how many times Ema had already told them about it.

During Maths class, as usual, Ema was on her phone during yet another boring lecture from the teacher. There had to be someone watching over Lyoko when nobody could be at the factory in case an activated tower, XANA’s gateway to their world and all the potential damage that would always bring with it, showed up in the virtual world. That was a nice way to spend time: instead of sitting through a painfully tedious session of mathematics, she could just chat with Miyu and whoever else was online. It was funnier to be there and occasionally see Akira stare at her to be serious during a class for once.

He only didn’t ask her to stop on the spot because she otherwise could refuse to lend him their philosophy lessons whenever he’d simply stop understanding most of it. The confusing words and concepts didn’t work very well with his arithmetic brain. It was a fine compromise, though.

Right when she was about to point out something funny Aoi had said in the chatroom with Miyu, she heard a strange buzzing sound. The neon over their hands started flickering ever so slightly, before the infection spread to the entire ceiling of the classroom.

“You know what this means?” she asked Akira in a whisper.

“A XANA attack. Did Miyu tell you about an activated tower?”

Her eyes immediately darted to the screen, only for a message to confirm their fears. Akira didn’t add anything more.

“Then what excuse do we throw?” she asked again, eyeing the little app she had on her phone she had freshly finished programming in her spare time (or whatever was left of it these days).

Before she could ask anything, the bell rang. Their eyes bolted in different directions, checking for two different parameters: hers to the teacher, his to the hour on his phone. The former didn’t have a watch, the second didn’t match the time class ended at. As everyone was packing their things together to change classrooms, another ring resonated through the corridors: the fire alarm.

“Okay, it’s definitely a XANA attack”, Akira stated the obvious. “Warn everyone to meet together at the factory before we can get spotted by teachers or monitors.”

“Roger that.”

It always took some time to reach the factory and gather everyone. That was why they had this habit of only meeting in the main computer room instead of in front of the factory, giving them more time to fight against whatever XANA had to throw at them on Lyoko. Akira and Ema had arrived first and launched themselves in the elevator to the main rooms before getting joined by Aoi shortly thereafter.

“Takeru and Kiku will be a bit late,” she told them, “I think they had class on a higher floor and had more troubles exiting the school.”

Moments after, the three had taken their respective spots: Akira at the main computer, Ema and Aoi in the cylindrical scans on the floor under the computer room. He had never been a man of actions and was the only one with a real knowledge of how to use the technical beast that was the Supercomputer. Meanwhile, Ema had always loved the thrill of action: fighting creatures on Lyoko was good way for her to exhort her thirst for a way to break away from the real world, even if it was just for a few minutes. Aoi was calmer, but still followed through when she learnt this could help both her brother and the friend she had found in Miyu.

“Are you ready to get virtualized?” he asked them as they set foot in the room, footsteps resonating on the iron floor.

“Of course!” Ema replied with thrill in her voice.

“I am,” Aoi responded more seriously.

“Then let’s get on with it.”

Four scanners presented themselves to the two girls. Each climbing in one, the virtualization process didn’t take more than thirty seconds anymore. They were used to it: getting transferred inside a virtual world wasn’t painful, at best it was dizzying the first few times. Soon enough, Aoi and Ema found themselves in a forest-like environment, all changed up to battle attire. It wasn’t just for show: if Aoi had wings, it was because she could use them to fly. Ema, who hadn’t design herself in her subconscious mind to get those, was kind of envious.

“Miyu should be nearby waiting for backup,” Akira’s voice arrived from the sky of Lyoko’s Forest territory. “Be careful to monsters, XANA has been waiting for us.”

“As usual,” Ema sighed, amused. “Let’s do this, Aoi.”

As they ran to their destination, a tower with a red halo, a girl with long pink hair in pigtails and blue eyes joined them. Aoi’s eyes started to shimmer as soon as they noticed her coming towards them, changing her sprinting direction to directly meet up with their friend. They had a habit of hugging each other as soon as they saw each other too. They had gotten more and more physical when meeting up in Lyoko, to the point of holding each other’s hands nowadays when seeing the others. Ema was certain that, would Miyu know about love like any other girl (despite being a sentient AI that was, frankly, more human than some actual humans she knew), they would already be dating. She remembered overhearing Aoi train herself to declare her love to her friend in her dorm room, after all.

“I’m glad to know you’re alright, Miyu!” Aoi told her as they went back to reaching the tower.

“Thank you for coming so quickly, Aoi, Ema! XANA has sent three Bloks who are guarding the tower, we need to be careful!”

Turning her eyes away from the two friends, Ema noticed one of the Bloks shooting at them.

“Out of the way!!”

Pushing Aoi and Miyu out of the line of fire from the creature sent to them, she took a direct hit to the shoulder from a laser beam, falling to the ground. Trying to shoot back with her own laser arrows at the creature, she was at least relieved to see Aoi and Miyu had made it behind a tree to find a way to shelter themselves from the incoming attacks.

“Ema!!” Aoi’s scream was accompanied by the mirror of Miyu’s mirror reflecting the hit the older girl was about to take, which would have certainly devirtualized her. The Blok took the hit right in its eye, exploding shortly after.

The commotion from this encounter passed, the three girls hid behind the very same tree. There were mock Bloks in the area, almost twice as much as they had first expected. As she watched from behind their little hiding spot, Ema could only notice this would be harder than expected with Miyu virtually unable to fight for herself and herself having taken a hit already.

“That was such a close call!” Miyu sighed in relief. “We really need to be more careful…”

She was holding onto Aoi’s hand as she said so, her sceptre in her other hand. Nobody knew where that weapon came from, really, but they had brushed it off as a mere way to self-defend against XANA’s monsters who, as it turned out, mostly used laser beams with long ranges to attempt ending her own life.

“Let’s be more careful until Takeru and Kiku can get here,” Aoi decided, with the two others nodding in agreement.

“Sorry we’re late…!” Takeru said as he entered the main computer room, breathless.

Akira immediately turned around, his one-ear headphone-microphone still on, a smirk drawing on his face. Backup was finally here.

“Jim tried to prevent us from reaching the factory when we tried to go through the heater room shortcut,” Kiku further explained.

“I see. Ema and Aoi required backup, there’s apparently too many monsters for them to deal with.

She glanced at her childhood friend whose back was against the wall, still not recovering his breath.

“Are you okay, Takeru?” she asked with concern all over her tone, hands on her chest.

“I… I’ll be fine… Let’s get to the scanners quickly, I’m sure Aoi, Ema and Miyu need our help…”

Even if nobody added anything, Akira turning back to the monitor to make sure this wasn’t a burning failure yet, Kiku remained worried. As the elevator went down another floor, she couldn’t get her eyes off Takeru and how flimsy his breathing was. He had never had a pristine health record, and that despite how good he was at martial arts, which made it so she was always concerned in some degree for his condition.

When the doors opened to reveal the scanner room, she handed her friend her help. He gave her a slight smile, a quiet way to tell her not to worry, as they climbed into their own cylinders to get virtualized. There was no time to lose and no time to get concerned for Takeru when there was a tower to deactivate and XANA going on a rampage to make everyone deaf by the end of the day through abusing ringing systems, ringtones and speakers.

The two soon enough ended in the Forest territory of Lyoko, with instructions given by Akira to join back the others. Running on their legs, the virtualization keeping them away from whatever feeling of physical fatigue they’d have felt from that, they soon noticed the group of monsters blocking the way and their friends behind a big tree.

“Oh, looks like XANA did already send a party,” Takeru noticed. “Let’s be sneaky and see if we can end them without Miyu being targeted by them.”

“Agreed.”

“Takeru! Kiku!”

Miyu seemed ecstatic to see them arrive, screaming their names in joy. Only then did she put her hand on her month, remembering XANA’s monsters could hear them. It was easy to make a diversion, but that was it.

“Akira!” Ema yelled to the sky to get their control tower’s attention. “How much enemies are they?”

No response.

“Oh God, that’s bad,” she then spoke to herself. “He must have been knocked away from the main panel.”

“Something happened to my brother?” Aoi panicked immediately thereafter, before clutching Miyu’s hand to keep her calm.

“It may have,” Kiku added as she joined them. “One of us needs to go check.”

They stared at each other, before Ema decided to take the head of things.

“Okay, I’ve got a plan. Aoi, you stay with Miyu to make sure she arrives to the tower in one piece! I’m going with Takeru to face them directly, while Kiku shoots them from the back. I’ve already taken a hit and Takeru has a powerful long-range weapon. Everyone’s good with that?”

“Roger!” Everyone replied in unison as they split in groups.

Ema had in her mind the secret hope of being devirtualized immediately. Takeru had less health point than she did, but she had already taken a hit and was the only one with any knowledge of the Supercomputer outside of Akira who seemed to spend a huge chunk of his nights on it. It was a perfect match for who had to go back to the real world to check on their friends.

She could see Kiku in her white kimono-like robe, braid flowing through the air as she ran and ran, in the corner of her eye running behind Bloks to stab them with her spear in their top eye, jumping on them, braid going up and down, causing their own self-destruction. She was clearly always going for those targeting Takeru, in a nice touch. The boy was himself with her throwing fire at the enemies, either to blind them or critically damage them.

In the corner of her other, Miyu and Aoi ran with their fingers intertwined, the latter with her own weapon out, ready to jump into action if needed. It was a safer solution for them than for Aoi to hold Miyu as she flew over the battlefield just in case she’d get shot in the wings: would that happen, they’d both take considerable fall damage and risk getting devirtualized. The possibility meaning the death of Miyu if it took place, they preferred to stay safe and go a bit slower. Good stuff there.

Because she wasn’t paying all her attention to monsters, Ema quickly found herself to be devirtualized by a second hit in the chest, making her virtual body shatter in pixels before she could resurface in the factory.

Exiting the scanner after getting forcefully devirtualized wasn’t the best feeling in the world, but Ema had no time for dizziness. She ran as fast as possible to the elevator and rushed her hands over the panel to go to the upper floor. They weren’t strangers to XANA using towers to gain access to the real world. In fact, they were even used to Akira getting attacked as to hinder the progress of those on Lyoko. The question was: what had it done to her friend while she was away in the virtual world?

As soon as the door opened, she realized two things: XANA had used a severed electric cable to do its deed, and Akira was unconscious the floor because of it. Her first thought was to rush to his side, to check if he was doing fine. A hand on his wrist, another on his forehead, and her eyes half-focused on the severed cable which now looked as inert as it should be, she let out a sigh of relief when she heard his pulse.

“You scared us again, you idiot,” she muttered under her breath. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to keep an eye on an important mission.”

She gently half-sat Akira against a nearby wall and jumped into the chair facing the screens monitoring everything. Embracing the control tower nature of it all, she picked the headphone and put it on her ear.

“Anyone, you’re receiving me? It’s Ema!”

Everyone or so replied positively.

“Lemme see…” Her eyes deciphered as much information as they possibly could on the monitors. “Takeru, you’re down to 20HP, be careful! One hit and you’re sent back home! Kiku, there should be a Blok behind you! Aoi, Miyu, you’re near the tower, you may be able to fly there…”

She interrupted herself when she saw the cable rise back to life, just as she heard everyone call out for Takeru’s voice. Getting down to her feet, taking a fighting stance, she hoped to be able to fight it back enough to have the time for the boy to reach her room. She knew how to activate the Return to the Past to fix all the damage the buildings around the school must have taken from the excessive sound, if the fact she was able to hear some low-quality rap music from the underground rooms of a factory was any indication, but Takeru didn’t.

Avoiding getting tripped by jumping over the cable’s feet, she was relieved to hear Takeru running towards her. He looked a bit out of breath from running so quickly in so little time, but he took his own fighting stance.

“Ema, get to the computer! I’m sure the others need you there!”

Nodding to him as to confirm his decisions, she jumped back into the chair to see the information: Kiku was close to devritualization with a mere ten HP remaining while Miyu was just about to enter the tower. Trying her hardest to ignore how one-sided Takeru’s fight against the cable was becoming in favour of XANA, she focused on the screens. The boy’s pained scream when his back slammed against the wall didn’t help. Before she could entirely redirect her focus, Kiku had been defeated by a last laser beam.

“Aoi, be careful, Kiku just got eliminated!”

“We know,” the brown-haired girl replied from the other side of the screen. “Miyu is entering the tower now, I’ll try to keep back the last enemies until she can deactivate it!”

“Good, but please make it quick, Akira got stunned and Takeru may be injured from fighting a cable. I’m afraid I’ll be the next, not going to lie there.”

Kiku soon joined the scene, judging from the elevator’s doors opening again and her little steps rushing to Takeru’s side.

“Ki… Kiku…” His weakened voice tried to warn his friend. “Don’t… Come here…”

Without a word, avoiding getting knocked back by the giant cable, she kneeled next to him, her gaze soon fixated on her friend rather than the incoming danger.

“Are you alright, Takeru?!”

“I… I think I’ve broken something against it… But it’s gonna be fine, don’t worry… I’m sure Miyu is about to deactivate the tower…” He gave a timid but warm smile to her.

She gently held him against her, a half-felt one on her lips…

“It’s going to be fine. It’s always going to be fine.”

Judging from Takeru’s weak grip, she knew his hand had been broken in his fight against the machine.

Entering the tower, Miyu made her way as fast as possible to the little panel presented in every tower. As soon as she put her hand on it, the system automatically recognized her, greeting her with the ever same and cold protocol.

The entire tower progressively turned empty as it deactivated. From this little virtual pseudo-cocoon, she could only hope as she looked down everything was fine outside.

Soon enough, the familiar energy wave of the Return to the Past resonated through the virtual world, making her smile as she thought that, once again, everything would be fine and that they had all saved the day.

They were back in the same Maths class, which was still boring, still not interesting. A side effect of using the Return to the Past, obviously. At least, she could safely say that

“Hey, do you remember what happened to you before you got unconscious earlier?” she asked trying to hide her concern.

“I got electricized by a cable, that’s all I can remember. It doesn’t matter much anyway, the Return to the Past cancels every injury we could have sustained.”

“Well, that’s fortunate for Takeru, he broke his hand when fighting the cable.”

Akira suddenly looked very pensive, before having a sort of epiphany flashing on his face.

“That makes me think… I should teach you how to use the Supercomputer, Ema, in case this ever happens again,” he whispered to her.

“I’m not against it. I already know how to use it, as you can see, but you could show me your… special tricks.”

The slight innuendo was enough to make him redden in a moment and look to the side.

“D-don’t phrase it like that…”

She grinned at his embarrassment. He was way too easy to tease, but it was always so much fun.

“Oh, by the way,” she added, “your sister is probably going to get a girlfriend soon, and she won’t even be material unless you come up with your program.”

“E… Excuse me?!”

“Miyu. She’s in love with Miyu and vice-versa. It’s just that you’re never here to see them flirt with each other knowingly or not.”

“Oh. That makes sense, when you precise it that way.”

“I know.”

Now, if she had the same modesty as Aoi, maybe she would have the guts to tell him about her ever-growing crush on him…

My top favorite Code Lyoko episodes (by season)

Season 1 First place: Code: Earth. Amazing and satisfying. We finally get to see Aelita brought to Earth after so much time. It was nice to see Jeremy forgive Jim and let him help out despite all that's happened. Second place: The Trap. For some reason, I love the concept of Ulrich and Sissi being trapped in an elevator while Sissi tends to Ulrich's broken arm. I don't ship Ulrich/Sissi, but it's amazing what a little bit of trouble will do to the bitch of the school. Sissi, this is how it's done. Just learn to stop being petty and snobby and start having respect and sympathy for people, and maybe you'll get the guy of your dreams. It may not be Ulrich, but you just have to move on sweetie. Third place: False Start. What a nice twist for the supercomputer being shut off means Aelita goes because of her link to Xana. What also a cool twist in bringing Kankrelats into the real world. Honorable mention: Routine(4th place), Ghost Channel(5th place), Holiday In The Fog(6th place), Cruel Dilemna(7th place), End Of Take(8th place), The Girl Of The Dreams(9th place), Just In Time(10th place) Season 2 First place: New Order. Wow, what a way to start a new season! New monsters, new vehicles, Aelita living at the school, and new mysteries to solve concerning Aelita's visions,and the Hermitage. Also, Yumi and Ulrich trapped in the sauna reminded me of Ashely and Ashlyn's tanning death from Final Destination 3. All we needed was the Love Rollercoaster theme playing and I'm pretty sure it would have looked the same. Second place: Common Interest. This episode decides to show us how bad it gets when the supercomputer loses energy, and Aelita is dying, as well as Xana. So Xana possesses a guy to steal some uranium. That's cool and all, but, 1234 for the password code, really? I laughed, but I was still enjoying this episode. This goes in the second place for me because I really love the suspense of fighting to save Aelita's life. If wasn't for the virus, everything would be much simpler. But something felt a bit missing from this episode, I don't know. The first time I watched it, I felt like I was watching a episode of House M.D. It very may have well could been for all we know! The plot sequence is there for it. Patient comes in with unexplainable illness and continues to suffer from bizarre episodes until the brains of the outfit pulls out the solution to the problem that no one could ever think of in a hundred years. Overall, I liked the plot of this episode, it was satisfying, a close call satisfying, like all the other episodes. But it makes me think, "hm, you always have to come prepared, because you never know what can happen." Third place: Temptation and Uncharted Territory are tied together for this one. I chose Temptation because this episode teaches kids that "just because it looks promising, it's not always the good idea." With the case of this episode, Jeremy uses the "Sometimes we have to do the wrong things for the right reasons" kind of path, and destroys his own mental health using Franz Hopper's headset to increase is brain power. Jeremy becomes edgy, smart alec, on the verge of snapping, and misses his classes. I like the plot of this episode because Jeremy tries so hard everyday, and he finally gets tired and loses his steam, which is what Xana wants. Despite Jeremy acting like a jerk because of the headset, I think it teaches a good lesson. Be careful of what you use, and how you use it, you might be under a trap. Uncharted Territory also goes for third, because while discovering sector 5 was a nice, interesting twist, there wasn't much anything else to this episode. This also marks to first appearence of the nightmare inducing Scyphazoa, so that made the episode a little less favorite than the others for me. Honorable mention: The Key(4th place), Contact(5th place), Deja vu(6th place), Cold War(7th place), Ultimatum(8th place), Attack Of The Zombies(9th place), Vertigo(10th place) Season 3 First place: Straight To Heart. A nice, simple way of getting back into the swing of things. But even getting back into the swing of things, there are still twists and turns. Aelita has a new ability; she can shoot pink energy fields out of her hands. Cool! She can be devirtualized and not disappear forever, because she had obtained all her human memories. Extra cool! But I also like this episode because this one too also teaches the reality of life. Yumi friendzones Ulrich, and to some, they saw it coming. While this is sad, I think Yumi did the right thing. Ulrich's jealousy of William and shyness of not making a move is stemmed from his low self-esteem. Until Ulrich can get it together, Yumi doesn't want to bother trying to be in a relationship with him anymore. She's been confused, and she's had enough. This scene, along with William confronting Ulrich after the accident at the pool is one of my favorites, because even though this show had a TV-Y7 rating, (some episodes should have been TV-PG), the writers knew that there would be an older, and more mature audience watching as well, to understand these situations. Second place: Temporary Insanity and Nobody In Particular are tied for this one. For Temporary Insanity, I enjoyed the plot of Odd and Ulrich thinking Earth is Lyoko and Lyoko is Earth. What a wild ride, and their antics inside the mental hospital are funny when they try to shoot at the bloks and crabs that they "see." And a hand clap to Aelita for being the boss on Lyoko when she gets fed up with Odd and Ulrich not paying attention and orders them to listen to her. What a funny episode! Nobody In Particular also goes to second due to the emotion that is set in. Ulrich's body and mind become seperated during a test on sector 5, and his body is stuck on Lyoko, and his spirit is left behind on Earth. Damn, the virtualization program removes souls now? Everyone goes home and cries over Ulrich, leaving the audience watching feeling emotional as well. How can we not? Ulich appears to be dead, and Jeremy feels like absolute crap, because, as the brains of the outfit, knows he's really in it now. But Ulrich appears in ghost form, but since no one can see him or hear him, he enters Kiwi as a resort of communication. This episode was as emotional as it is funny. Seeing Ulrich prance around in Jim's body trying to be the boss was amusing. I laughed when everyone ganged up on him in the cafeteria threw bread and food at him. Third place: Final Round. A wild and interesting conclusion to the short season 3. William joins the gang, only to be possessed by Xana. Brilliant! Only sarcastically speaking, but not for Xana. In my opinion, William makes a good Lyoko warrior, but he was too playful and cocky, which led to his capture. Everyone should have listened to Yumi this time around I suppose. Ulrich's dad showing up was a nice thing as well. Only now we can see why Ulrich is the way he is. Honorable mention: Xana Awakens(4th place), Tidal Wave(5th place), Aelita(6th place), Lyoko Minus One(7th place), The Pretender(8th place), Sabotage(9th place), Triple Trouble(10th place) Season 4 First place: Lab Rat and William Returns is tied for first! I thouroughly enjoyed Lab Rat due to the amazingness of seeing the Lyoko warriors in real life! In 2D Lyoko form that is, we'll get to Evolution later. It was awesome idea for the writers to put this concept into the show, things are really heating up now. (Why are the final seasons of shows, most of them I should say, get so damn good towards the end?) I loved the animation and the idea of traveling to different Replicas and labs to destroy supercomputer's within that region. William Returns is also a good one because first, we see that William is not actually dead, but he's still very much under Xana's control. Congrats to Xana for making it look like William had actually returned to Earth. Second place: This one contains three silver spots on my podium! They are, The Lake, Wrong Exposure, and Music Soothes The Savage Beast. I'm not even sure why The Lake is one of my favorites. It just is. Maybe because I like the idea of the hereoes actually getting a good break for once. Trying to live a wholesome life for once. Also now that William is a threat, things get even more interesting. We also get this interesting scene of Yumi trying to talk to William to make him understand, and he comes back for a second, but only a second. Despite the cliche, "I know you're in there somewhere you just have to fight", it is actually pretty emotional. We see William actually trying to break through. So good job here. Mrs. Hertz being knocked out and Jim almost giving her CPR, or PCR as some of the other students called it, and Mrs. Hertz wakes up and threatens to hurt Jim where the sun doesn't shine if he does. Wrong Exposure earns its silver medal for Aelita finally finding out some more information about her past. I like how the characters handled the principals suspicion about Aelita after Sissi finds out some information about her past. After all, Aelita was 12 when she entered the supercomputer, and being in a virtual world stops the aging process. So I guess this is why time travel has the same effect on a person as well, because it's basically the same as being in another dimension? Is this why Jack never aged for 50 years in Aku's ruling timeline? (I just made a Samurai Jack reference in case somebody reading doesn't know.) This episode almost made it to first place spot, but something was just missing. The Aelita and Ulrich fight sequence was awesome and epic. So we a silver-rated episode, but a gold-rated fight sequence. Then, after the fight is over, we get some sweet moments of Ulrich nudging Aelita towards the tower so she can deactivate it. What a nice episode, what an awesome fight though! And then we have Music Soothes the Savage Beast! Aelita, my girl, is finally shining with the Subdigitals and achieving her dream of playing her remix's on the board. But I am very disappointed with Jeremy in this episode. Yes Jeremy, we all know how strong and powerful Xana has become and what he's up to, but just let Aelita be Aelita! Let her have some fun! Go watch her performance! She spent 10 years of her life trapped in a virtual world with no one to help her, and her earlier years were spent dealing with the fact she had her mother snatched away from her when she was 5 years old! Oh, and let's forget her own father, a second-grade magician as she calls him is the one responsible for all this! Repeating the same day every day for 7 years drove him mentally insane! Come on Jeremy! But I love this episode, because I personally think it shows that Aelita has come a long way. Third place: Skidbladnir and Fight To The Finish earn the bronze medal. I chose Skidbladnir because it was very interesting to see a virtual ship that will carry our heroes through the internet and to the replica's via the digital sea. While this episode was good because of the new ship, there didn't really seem to be much that followed the episode after, other than William's massive attack on the ship and the attack on the real world as well. Fight To The Finish leaves us with a satisfying yet sad end. Xana is finally destroyed, but at the cost of Franz Hopper's life so that he could supply Aelita the power she needed to launch the program that would wipe out Xana. Even though this is the end, there's still one episode left called Echoes, which is basically a filler episode of the heroes thinking back on all the moments of their adventure. I like this episode, but it's sad. How much more can poor Aelita take? It is satisfying to see Xana dead and gone however. I really wish Aelita could have had her dad back though. I haven't seen Evolution yet, even though it's been out for a couple of years, so I don't know if Aelita gets her mother back. Honorable mention: I'd Rather Not Talk About It(4th place), Crash Course(5th place), Maiden Voyage(6th place), Hot Shower(7th place), Lost At Sea(8th place), Distant Memory(9th place), Canine Coundrum(10th place)

Dante and Petel body swap. something has gone horribly wrong with rematerialization

(HEY SIS remember when you asked me this like years ago? Well I finally finished it and now it really IS a Code Lyoko story!)

Exitingthe game definitely drained a lot from everyone. Petel was very awareof that. Usually, Dante was so tired that he had to take a nap. Frankand Abraham also normally retired immediately after, as well. Sonyamentioned once that Vektor would collapse not long after, despite theguy’s attempts at continuing on. It was something Paige was lucky tonever have to experience.

Rightnow, Petel was chalking up this disorientation to that tiredness.

Hecould’ve sworn that he’d been on the far right of the room, but thescanner doors opened to reveal a view from the opposite side of theroom. Perhaps he’d been mistaken. That was all. Frank and Abrahamexited the other tubes just fine, which meant Dante would be directlyacross from Petel’s placement.

Vektorstumbled out of the white tube in the centre of the room, lookingboth exhausted and urgent. “Navigator, did something happen?”

“That’snot.” Paige busily clacked away at the keyboard of the computersituated just enough away from the centre white tube to be consideredoff-centre. She frowned at the display screen. “Maybe? This datahere–”

“Sosomething did–”

Vektorsurged forward and fell flat onto his face on the floor. As expectedfrom that unbalanced prince. Paige let out a heavy breath and satback in her chair. “I don’t know, all right?” She paused toglance around the room uneasily, from Petel to Abraham and Dante toFrank. “How is everyone feeling so far?”

“Vektor’sdone, like usual.” Frank grinned, though he was holding a handto his head. “My head’s a bit fuzzy, but I’m fine other thanthat.”

“Ifeel rather rejuvenated.” Abraham brushed the sleeves of hisuniform off idly, then turned his attention towards the tube acrossfrom where Petel had exited. “You, however, seem to be worse offthan usual, Petel.”

Therewas silence for a minute, Dante not responding. Petel’s instinctskicked in and he tripped out of his scanner, moving too quickly forhis suddenly clumsy body to keep up with. “I’m fine, Abraham.Dante?”

Petelhad to stop mid-step. That was Dante’s voice he’d just spoken with.Abraham and Frank turned towards Petel, their eyes widening and jawsdropped. Paige winced, looking back at Petel. Vektor pulled his faceoff the floor to say, “Yes. It appears there was, indeed, aglitch.”

Again,silence overpowered the tower. A groan interrupted it, finally,coming from the scanner where Petel should have exited from, andPetel broke out of the surprised stupor to walk over towards thatsound. His arms and legs commanded differently than normal, seeing asthey were Dante’s and not his own, and Petel had to fight down thatpanic slowly rising in his throat. He stopped at the scanner and,yes, that was definitely his body there, lying on the floor of thetube. He crouched down to place a hand on his black hair. “Dante?”

“Checosa è.” Dante, in the middle of struggling to his hands andknees, froze at the clunky way Petel’s voice spoke the Italian words.Hearing the softer speech, the Italian, made Petel smile wryly. Hegrabbed for Dante’s hand (Petel’s, really) and clasped onto it. Danteslowly looked up to meet Petel’s eyes, which were Dante’s own red.“What..?”

Petelwasn’t sure what else to do and ended up shrugging. They stared ateach other for a good while. In the background, Frank repeated “What”over and over while Abraham was silent in shock. Vektor and Paigewere speaking and Petel was certain that would turn into an argumentsoon enough, but for now it was mostly a bunch of babble about thegame’s system and the computer’s processing.

Danteslowly closed his (or, Petel’s) mouth and bowed his head. Afteranother second or so of silence, Dante said, “This is apredicament.”

Petelsnorted through his (Dante’s) nose. “Good use of vocabulary.”

“Itwas only a matter of time, huh?”

Dantedeflated further. Petel grimaced. “You know it.”

Petelhelped Dante up to their feet, using their all ready clasped hands.Surprisingly, or maybe not, Dante was able to stand with relativeease. Together, they joined Frank and Abraham where they stood behindPaige and Vektor at the computer. Abraham waved hesitantly ingreeting, a gesture Dante returned just as nervously. Frank lookedfrom Dante to Petel a few times before speaking. “Why.”

“Systemerror.” Vektor tossed the statement over his shoulder at them,standing straight with his hands on his hips in self-importance. “Itappears there was a data overflow during the log-out procedure whichcaused a few lines of code in each of you to be misplaced oraltered.”

“Itshouldn’t be too hard to fix.” Paige continued typing away ather keyboard, though Petel could hear the wince in her tone. “Justgotta wait for tomorrow so we can get you guys logged back into thegame in order to edit your code.”

Vektorgrinned at them, his golden eyes sparkling. “I was designed forthis.”

“Don’tget too cocky there.” Paige aimed an exasperated glare atVektor, making him frown in return. “These are my friends andyour team you’ll be messing with.”

Vektorwaved her off dismissively. “All will be well. Really, youshould be looking into why this sudden data overflow occurred in thefirst place, Navigator.”

“Nooffence, but I have my hands full enough as it is trying to calm thesystem down right now.”

“Forone of your calibre, I’d expect you to be able to complete both tasksat once.”

Paige’sglare turned murderous and Petel decided it was time to step inbefore they had a whiny prissy prince on their hands. “Paige isdoing what she can. Let her work, Vektor.”

Vektorjumped, taken aback by being told off by Dante’s voice. Frank andDante also flinched at the unusual treat of hearing Dante’s voiceform full, coherent sentences. Abraham, on the other hand, startedlaughing. “You don’t know how good it is to hear your speechstyle in Vicario’s voice, Petel.”

Petelfrowned at Abraham, who only laughed harder. Frank rolled his eyesand pressed his hand harder against his temple. “Really? That’syour reaction to the fact that our two friends have swapped bodies?”

“Ofcourse.” Abraham cleared his throat to cease his laughter andgrinned at Frank. “A good rule for theatre is to always rollwith the punches.”

Frankshook his head, his expression a mixture of incredulous and pained.Dante’s frown became one of concern, though before any of them couldask about it, Vektor spoke up again. “You make a fair point.Navigator, I’m sorry if I seem to be demanding too much of you.”

“Yougot that right.” Paige huffed out a breath, then softened. “It’sall right, we’re all a little shaken by this – this…”

Shestruggled for a moment, trying to think of the right word. Dantepiped up (with Petel’s voice). “Predicament?”

Paigedeflated. Petel chuckled, though it game out more as a giggle withDante’s bubblier, rounder voice. “Good use of vocabulary.”

“Wolf.”Vektor addressed Petel, golden eyes determined. The prince wasprobably the only one who would be able to tell them apart right now,being able to see their code and all. “Will you and Inferno beall right for the rest of the night if Navigator and I cannot figureout how to quickly fix this issue?”

Petelshrugged his (Dante’s) shoulders. “Yeah, sure.” Beside him,Dante stiffened, and while Petel noticed it, he wasn’t sure what todo about it. As such, he continued. “But Paige is right, there’snothing else we can really do for today. We should all–”

Agreen creature ambled through the wall and into the tower, makingPetel halt mid-sentence. Abraham, Frank, Paige, and Vektor’sexpressions turned quizzical towards Petel, but Petel was too shockedby the appearance of this hunched and wrinkled thing to offer anyexplanation. Its green weathered skin had scabs like pox and itsnails were chipped and yellow. It looked directly at Petel, grinningwith stained fangs, and lumbered towards him. As it did so, it pulledout what looked like wire clippers.

IfPetel was correct, that thing was a goblin. Something Dante hadmentioned several times before. And Petel knew exactly what itsintentions were.

Beforeit could get close enough, however, Dante threw out an arm in frontof Petel and raised his (Petel’s) voice. “Yes, we should turnin. For today. That’s a good idea.”

Thegoblin vanished. Just like that. Paige and Vektor glanced to eachother, apprehensive, but both nodded in the end. Paige went back totyping on the keyboard. “Right, noted. Vektor, look this overwith me real quick.”

Vektorrelented and returned to looking over Paige’s shoulder at thecomputer monitor as letters, numbers, and symbols scrolled by. “Ifwe find where the data overflow began, we should be able to find thesource of the issue and how to reverse it.”

“That’swhy I asked you to help me look, fop.”

Paigegrowled out the statement and Vektor raised an eyebrow at it, but thetwo were quickly absorbed in the computer screen. Frank steppedcloser to Dante, who lowered his (Petel’s) arm from protecting Petelfor whatever reason (it couldn’t have been that goblin thing, Peteljust had to be tired, that was all), and looked carefully intoDante’s (Petel’s) eyes. After a moment of close scrutiny, Frankstepped back and deflated, hand still pressed to his head. “Tryingto tell you two apart is going to get confusing fast.”

“Ernest,are you going to be all right?” Abraham hovered an arm overFrank’s shoulders, the most tender Petel had ever seen the hunter.“If you’d like, I can walk you back to your room.”

“I’llbe all right.” Frank smiled appreciatively, but waved Abrahamoff. “Just got a bit of a headache forming. It happens from timeto time.”

Abraham,though he didn’t look convinced, lowered his arms to his side indefeat. Frank waved to them all, then left the tower. It seemedsomething had gone wrong for all of them in some way, thankfully notmaking them all switch minds or bodies or whatever. Abraham stared atthe doors to the tower a moment longer, then snapped himself out ofit and smiled amicably at Petel and Dante. “In that case, I’dbest get home before my father sentences me to another week ofre-training. See you all tomorrow.”

Abrahamtook his leave and Petel noticed that there seemed to be bats hangingabove the doors. At this rate, Petel was going to need to sleep thisoff as well. He started off towards the door and was stopped by Dantegrabbing his hand. He turned to look back at Dante, silentlyquestioning, and Dante seemed flustered. “Um. Is this. Is it allright?”

Petelnodded and that helped Dante relax. They wished Paige and Vektorgoodnight, then headed out the doors. The bats dissolved the momentDante (in Petel’s body) drew near them and Dante seemed determined tolead the way, so Petel allowed it.

Ashe settled for being lead along, however, he took notice ofeverything around them. Maybe it was just his being tired or maybe hehad the same vision as Dante from being in Dante’s body and havingDante’s eyes. Either way, the world around them was filled with allsorts of twisted creatures and laughing spectres, frompitchfork-wielding imps to winged serpents slithering through thenight sky. Fairies with worryingly sharp teeth flitted about, gettingjust close enough to be annoying, and the hissing of a huge monsterthat seemed to only be mouth and teeth was audible over all the othernoises.

Onthe one hand, this world of weird was remarkably interesting to lookat. On the other hand, a long forgotten feeling manifested deep inPetel’s chest, making the hair on the back of his (Dante’s) neckstand on end and his (Dante’s) hands fill with warmth.

Petelhad stopped being able to feel this a long time ago, when he’daccepted the wolf and become it.

Hehadn’t thought it possible to feel fear ever again.

Dantepulled him into the dorm and up the stairs to their room. Onceinside, Dante let go of Petel’s (his) hand and closed the door firmlybehind them. Petel went to sit down on his own bed, but Dante pointedto the green blanket on Dante’s bed, much more commanding than Petelhad expected. Petel decided to oblige, lowering himself slowly andcarefully onto the mattress. Dante deflated, letting his (Petel’s)forehead clonk against the door, then turned around and fixed Petelwith an intense gaze. “You saw it.”

Petelopened his mouth to reply, then realised he had no real input on thatstatement. Dante was right, after all. Petel closed his mouth and,instead, simply nodded. Dante climbed onto the bed beside Petel,close enough so their legs were touching.

“Sorry,I’m sorry, I. I’m gonna have to break a few rules here, but. I-I haveto make sure, have to. They didn’t – they haven’t – have theythreatened you yet?”

Petelsmiled. “It’s only been a few minutes.”

“Butyou.” Dante pulled back and exhaled a short breath, running hishands though Petel’s black hair. Admittedly, Dante knew how to makePetel’s body look good. “When you spoke up, you provoked thegoblins. They’re not going to be pleased about this and want to taketheir payment.”

Petelwent again to try and reassure Dante, but the serious look on Dante’s(Petel’s) face made Petel reconsider. He gave it a good moment ofthought before speaking up. “It’s all true. Isn’t it?”

Dantewinced and turned away to avoid having to look Petel in the face.“Th-There are rules. I can’t.”

Thesheer amount of guilt Dante was able to communicate using Petel’sbody made it all click into place. All those other times, Dantehadn’t just been thinking about the time Petel went berserk or whenDante had hurt Petel when preventing him from voiding out with thefire. This was the reality Dante had to live in and that was whyDante was always so hesitant, so on edge. Everything suddenly made analarming amount of sense.

Petelgently turned Dante’s (Petel’s) face to look at him again. Before hecould say anything, Dante shook his (Petel’s) head. “Don’t.I’ll. Later.”

Dantestill refused to meet Petel’s (his own) eyes. Petel decided that wasfair enough, this could wait. “Sleep?”

Petelnodded towards the bed, the blanket Dante so liked to sushi himselfin. Dante smiled wryly. “Yeah. Sounds good.”

Afterthey sorted this mess out, Petel would ask for an explanation. Fornow, they were tired and in need of a good sleep. Dante wrapped theblanket around them both and they settled down together on the bed,Petel clinging tightly to Dante and Dante returning the gesture.Petel had never really realised how cold his own skin was to thetouch. Nor had he considered how much heat Dante must have containedbeneath his skin to always feel so hot like this.

Therewas a constant drone of static and whispering, but Petel ignored itand fell asleep before long. Dante also seemed able to sleep easier,which was enough for Petel for the moment.

Pre-Historic

Pre-Historic Fandom: Code Lyoko Pairing: Ulumi Summary: In which XANA’s possession power extends to more than just currently living creatures. AN: Part of my Spooky Snippets story dump. For more details please see this post.

He reasoned that XANA must have had a connection to the school program with how perfect his timing with his attacks always tended to be.

The students of Kadic Academy were on a field trip to the local history museum at the time XANA reared its ugly head, which seemed to have a plethora of possessable objects that could be used to its benefit; specifically the taxidermy wild beasts from the Stone Age and suits of armor worn by knights centuries ago came to mind. Chaos broke out when one of the old suits of armor shook slightly, swinging with its mace and narrowly missing Sissi’s head. If Yumi hadn’t noticed the armor moving and tackled the other girl to the floor, she would have been a goner. He rushed over, hauling both girls to their feet and dragging them with the rest of the crowd away from the attacking artifact. “Thanks, Ulrich,” Yumi said with a small laugh. He answered with a small smile of his own and a nod of his head.

While the other students rushed out, being guided by teachers and staff members of the museum, the two rushed to meet the other three members of their group present. They were crouched around a corner, leading to a hallway full of paintings, and Jeremy already had his computer out to scan for a tower. William motioned the two over when he spotted them and kept peering over the corner to make sure no one else spotted them. Aelita was on her phone, trying to get in touch with Odd back on campus. After a prank on Jim had gone horribly wrong, he’d been banned from the trip and stuck in the library with busy work for the day. “Been a while since he went with something so grand. He must be feeling the heat from us,” William commented with a smug little grin.

“That or he’s aiming to do some serious damage,” Yumi stated seriously, scowling at the light air to the other’s tone.

“Yumi’s right; this could go pretty far south if we don’t get it handled like that,” Ulrich agreed, snapping his fingers for added emphasis.

William groaned lowly, seeming less than pleased at getting chastised for his comment. “Yeah, we’ll meet you there. Thanks, Odd,” Aelita said before hanging up her phone and pocketing it. All eyes swerved to her. “Odd says there doesn’t seem to be anything going on at campus, so he’s going to sneak out and meet us at the factory.”

“Right,” Jeremy said while snapping his laptop shut, “now we just need to decide who should stay and distract XANA while we get away.”

“I’ll stay. If anyone can keep out of XANA’s clutches while you deactivate the tower, it’s me,” Yumi said while pointing a thumb at herself.

“I’ll stay too. Strength in numbers and all that,” Ulrich chimed in hastily. She flashed him an inquisitive look for his eagerness to volunteer, but he answered by averting his gaze with a faint pink tint coming to his cheeks.

Jeremy nodded, not seeming to notice or care about the looks being exchanged. “Okay then. Yumi and Ulrich will handle the demonic cutlery here and we’ll see about shutting XANA down,” Jeremy explained before turning and taking off down the hallway. Aelita and William were fast on his heels, calling back encouraging words at the two stragglers.

Ulrich took a deep breath before looking over at her. “Any idea where to start with this?” He asked.

She opened her mouth to respond when they heard a loud, animalistic roar. “Sounds like XANA found the pre-historic animal display,” She growled lowly.

“Well, I guess it makes sense. He kinda likes playing with stuffed animals,” He answered teasingly. She stared at him for a moment before snickering slightly and shoving his shoulder lightly.

“Dork,” She chuckled before tearing off in the direction the noise had come from. He was right with her, taking a deep breath and centering himself as they got closer. They were going to have to be on their best if they didn’t want anyone to get seriously hurt.

When they stumbled upon the scene, the whole room was a wreck. The Neanderthals had broken the glass on their display and disappeared to parts unknown. The now-living saber tooth tiger figure had three students cornered and screaming in the far corner of the room. It only took a split second before Ulrich recognized the three as Millie, Tamiya and Hiroki; Yumi having come to the same realization if the look of pure murder on her face was anything to judge by. Ulrich grabbed at some loose vines and a spear from the busted open display. “Yumi, catch!” He snapped, tossing the spear in her direction.

She barely glanced at him before she caught it, glaring down at the saber tooth tiger turning to face them. The fake eyes gleamed with the symbol of XANA, sparking life into the stuffed beast. Ulrich took the time of the stare down between the two to loop the vine into a lasso and tossed. He smirked when it looped around the beast’s neck and it roared, attention turned to him.

He jerked roughly, pulling a beast a few feet closer. It swatted at the binds on its neck but he yanked up roughly, holding the vine up above his own head, causing the creature’s paw to miss by just a hair. It roared at him again while he held it at that angle, awkward as it was. He and Yumi exchanged a quick look before she rushed forward, spear poised at the ready. The beast tried to lunge forward but Ulrich held fast and jerked back again with all his might. The creature tried to jerk back, its attention turned away from the on-comer, and moved to charge at him, realizing that as long as he was there it wouldn’t be able to get in any good hits. Yumi pierced the creature’s shoulder with the spear just as it moved to rush him, tearing apart the fabric and bringing out some of the stuffing with her. She stabbed inward again, with more force this time, and pierced through the fabric on the other side. She kept carving until she had loped the limb off, Ulrich keeping up his role of yanking at the vine so the creature could do nothing more than uselessly screech and try to squirm free.

Yumi moved and repeated the action with the back limb as well. Ulrich understood exactly what her plan was and had to applaud her fast thinking; if the stupid thing couldn’t move, it couldn’t fight. And if it couldn’t fight then XANA had no reason to keep using it. Once the second leg was off, Ulrich dropped the vine and darted over to the three wailing younger kids in the corner. “Are you guys okay? Did any of you get hurt or anything?” He fretted, catching each of the girls by their shoulders and forcing them to look at him. The minute the tiger model was down and Yumi was leaping over it to approach the other three, Hiroki was rushing for her, sobbing and babbling in Japanese so quickly Ulrich wondered if even Yumi could understand her little brother.

“N-No, we’re okay,” Tamiya chimed up first, words choked up by a hiccup. He breathed a sigh of relief when Millie awarded him with a nod in agreement and sniffle to what her friend had said.

He carefully guided them out of the corner and back to the open space, keeping one hand on each of their shoulders for support and reassurance. He watched the dark grey mist of XANA’s presence lift from the saber tooth, the glowing red eye watching the five humans for a second, before it formed a smaller ball and sped toward the other side of the room. Ulrich followed the possession cloud with his eyes as it headed toward the unmoving model of a woolly mammoth, a knot forming in his stomach as the model began to shake with the cloud settled inside. He quickly steered the two girls toward the exit, shoving at them gently. “Go, go! We’ve got to go now!” He snapped, peering back as the woolly mammoth lifted its trunk and made its conscientiousness known.

Yumi, focused more on calming her brother and making sure he was free of injuries, jerked up and looked back in shock and horror. She shoved Hiroki toward the two girls, both paused by their own terror for a second despite Ulrich’s order and shoving. When they snapped to, Millie grabbed Hiroki’s arm and pulled him along with them to the exhibit exit. “Wait, Yumi! We can’t leave her!” He protested, trying to yank out of the older girl’s grip.

Ulrich looked around futilely for something – anything, really – that could take down a woolly mammoth. The vine was still cinched around the saber’s neck and Yumi had abandoned the spear in her rush to assure Hiroki was safe and well. There was nothing else near them that could really be of use and XANA knew it. It charged forward, head tilted down so its curved tusks would be about level with Yumi’s hips. He could see Yumi trying to figure out what to do; after all, if they just ran out of its path it would just go for the other three kids. He had a split second to think before he rushed at Yumi himself, grabbing her arms, and flinging her backwards toward where the other three were.

She hit the ground and rolled, stopping at the mouth of the exit, and scrambled to a kneeling position.

Ulrich had a second to brace himself before the tusk made rough impact with his stomach, knocking the breath from him and causing him to dangle along the expanse. The pointed tip was just an inch from his head when he lurched forward with the impact. He tried in vain to right himself, to get a good enough grip on the tusk that he could clamor on to the creature’s head, but he couldn’t get away before he wound up pinned between the wall and the woolly mammoth’s tusk.

He heard the sickening crunch of his own bones and odd squelch of his organs being mashed – or at least he thought he did - under the weight of the impact before he felt the pain.

And when the pain hit him, he couldn’t fight off the agonized screams that poured forth. He knew his spine had to have been snapped; he felt a painful tingling sensation at the moment of impact but once he actually focused on the pain he couldn’t fee his legs at all. He could taste copper bubbling up in his throat, desperate to spill over. He wheezed frantically, trying to breathe and collect himself, tried to focus on anything but the agonizing pain and horror that had started to build inside him. He heard the others calling out to him, wailing in frantic terror, and forced himself to move his head enough to see them. Millie and Tamiya were covering their mouths and sobbing, Millie stumbling away from his view; most likely to find a place to vomit, if he had to make an educated guess. Hiroki was dumbstruck, his features drained paler than he’d ever seen, his dark eyes wide and shining in an odd mix of horror and gratitude.

He had most likely realized how close that had been to being his older sister.

Ulrich’s gaze found Yumi last, seeming frozen to her spot kneeling at the exit. Her mouth was parted like she wanted to say something but no sounds found a way out. Her face was drained of color and her eyes were open much wider than they should be, much like her brother, but her eyes were shining with tears threatening to spill over. He felt a little guilty – he always hated seeing her cry and especially so when he was the one that caused it – but he figured it was a necessary evil if it meant she was alive and safe. Or, rather, she was alive at that moment, but she might not if they loitered around much longer.

He took in an agonizing, deep breathe in preparation to try and shout. He knew he wouldn’t be able to make much noise but he had to try. “Run,” He managed to wheeze out, his voice barely above a whisper and blood sputtering out on to his shirt. Yumi choked back a sob at the display, blinking as tears started to fall, and he mouthed the word again.

She closed her eyes tightly for a moment before she got to her feet, turning to face the others. “We gotta go! Now!” She barked harshly, her voice cracking and wavering. He couldn’t see if Millie had a reaction, but Tamiya and Hiroki both flinched before doing what she said. She took a step before looking back over at him, not a bit of the harshness she’d just used showing in her eyes or her face.

He flashed her a shadow of a smile of encouragement, the effect somewhat ruined by the blood starting to dribble down his chin, before she disappeared, the sound of the small groups retreating footsteps all that was left of them. The smile stayed on his face and he closed his eyes, the trunk of the woolly mammoth wrapping around his useless legs. He didn’t see the final blow – the beast flinging him across the room into another wall – nor did he feel the pain from any of it anymore. He instead felt a strange warmth in his chest, proud of himself, his last thoughts focused on the woman he’d sent away and taking comfort in the fact she was alive.

Her safety was all that mattered in the end.

valentine’s day boogaloo - guidelines

The two of them laid flat on their backs against the beaten mat, panting as sweat dripped off their skin amidst scuffs and early forming bruises. The gymnasium ceiling lazily spun in front of their eyes. They had quite literally fought themselves into exhaustion, too tired to even lift a fist against the other. Neither of them wanted to call a stalemate, and if anything this was just a break before they could fight again.

Reese’s feet hung off the edge of the mat, heels gratefully feeling the cool floor. He coughed and breathed harsh and deep, the same way she was, and if Yumi wanted to she could’ve noticed in that moment that they weren’t that different.

Yumi didn’t want to.

Their positions were askew and a safe distance away from each other. Yumi finally let her eyes close as she swallowed sticky hot saliva. Okay. Just a few minutes of vulnerability, and then either she’d get up and fight or she’d just get up and leave.

“What was he like?” Reese spoke out of nowhere, his voice gravelly from the exertion, “Your dead boyfriend.”

Searing hot rage burned in her muscles more than the lactic acid, but unfortunately Yumi couldn’t do a damn thing about it. It infuriated her by at least three times more when she realized that he had asked this question now of all times on purpose. She couldn’t do anything. She was, essentially, trapped.

“Fuck you,” she gasped, “Fffffuck you.” Saliva spat from her mouth but she didn’t care.

“That’s a little harsh for a fourteen-year-old’s relationship, don’t you think?”

“He was thirteen,” Yumi angrily corrected, “I was fourteen. And again, fuck you.”

“Well, my question still stands, since you’re clearly avoiding it.”

That stabbed her in the chest more than she was willing to admit–of course she was avoiding it, but she didn’t want it so bluntly in the open that she didn’t want to do anything with it. Which turned back on her again; it was Ulrich, her best friend, and she didn’t want anything to do with thinking about him.

Ouch.

“He…He was…,” Yumi hated that she had to go slow, giving Reese full opportunity to interrupt and taunt her. The fact that he wasn’t, that she was expecting him to and he wasn’t somehow made it all the more worse than if he had actually said anything, “He was…moody. Sullen. Quiet. But he had a…A big heart. He tried to do everything to make the people he cared about happy, and it tore him apart when he could only do one or the other and not both. Betrayal couldn’t be a vocabulary word for him, and every time he had to say, play soccer for his parents, instead of going to Lyoko…or vice versa…,”

Reese was quiet. She couldn’t tell if he was listening intently, just letting her fill the gym with words, or had actually fallen asleep, but she continued anyways.

“Ulrich, give away a secret…?” she quoted herself from so long ago, “No, he couldn’t. But he was sweet, and kind, when he sensed that if…someone didn’t want to talk about something, like they were hiding it…,”

I’m really glad you came, Ulrich. You really know how to cheer someone up.

“Man, sounds like a real pushover,” Reese grunted. The pang of anger was dulled from her nostalgia, but still she flashed a glare at him even though he couldn’t see it, “This guy has no flaws except he’s too good, right? Fuck that.”

“Oh, no,” Yumi continued, “Fuck that indeed. He was a stubborn ass, quick to jump to the worst possible conclusions. When William got transferred to Kadic he became jealous in the worst way–the quiet way, where everything’s fine but you know everything wasn’t if he would just talk for once instead of bottling it up–yes William was after me and yes I laid the rug out for him because I’ve been alone in a huge school before, but damn it, damn it, Ulrich, we’re still…,”

She inhaled with a shudder, coming back to the present and realizing what she had been doing. Staring wide-eyed at the ceiling for a moment, she recollected herself, furrowed her brow again, and darkened her voice.

“What the fuck do you care, anyway, why are you asking?”

Reese rolled, sitting up as the sweaty plastic of the mat stuck to him as he peeled away from it.

“Just want to know who I’m replacing.” he muttered weirdly. She raised an eyebrow. Odd hadn’t told her that he had asked these questions to him, and god forbid Aelita told her anything except the most superficial shit about Reese.

“You’re replacing a boy who meant a lot to us. To me.” She spoke slowly, with command and laces of wary hatred, “Everything about him still hurts. You’ll never be the boy he was, but we need you too bad to think about that right now.”

“I’m sure it all still hurts,” Again, Reese sounded weird. Dark, but unlike the other times he sounded dark this felt…inward. Not directed at her, and not fueled by anger, “And I know I’m not that kid–jesus christ, who the fuck do you think I am, anyways?”

Strange time to get angry. Strange that Yumi saw straight through that anger. She propped herself up on her wrists.

“Getting angry, Reese?” she put a sickly sweet twist to her voice, “He’s my dead boyfriend, not yours.”

He stood up but then paused, his back facing towards her. The fabric of his tank top was folded over itself with sweat stains. Yumi stared hard at it, as if she could put holes in his heart.

“No,” he responded after a while, clearly using carefully selected words, “But he’s my problem to deal with, isn’t he? You’re making sure of that.”

Yumi stared at him as he walked away.

The strangest encounter, and yet Yumi felt like she actually understood one thing about Reese Anders now.

He was afraid of Ulrich.

Entry #9: Code: Lyoko au part 2

Mod note: this one doesn’t count for the contest since we’re working with one shots BUT i think you guys are going to enjoy anyway

(So I came up with a cool mic drop moment and had to write the next part of this AU. I’m gonna end up writing an entire fic gdi)

After the day they’d had, it was only natural to celebrate. Blue had a whole room to herself (because of course she did), so the team had planned a meet up for the night. Sneaking around the staff was Gold’s forte and damned if he wasn’t proud of that.

“To the downfall of M2!” Blue cheered, raising her cup high. Crys, Gold, Kotone, and Green raised their cups in response, sitting in a sort of circle on the floor. At least Gold and Crys could enjoy the joke. Green was smiling, too, quite the rare sight. Before Gold could point that out, Blue dropped back down in her seat and slung an arm around Green’s shoulders. “If only we’d been there to see that cool thing Crys did, hm, Green?”

She winked over at Crys, sipping from her cup. Green’s smile faded as he accepted his fate. Crys chuckled uneasily. “I guess?”

“Everyone should have the capacity to evolve.” Silver said from his seat at Blue’s desk. “Even you, Red.”

His laptop was open to include Red in their party. Red’s eyes practically sparkled. “You mean it? Then I could battle on my own, right?”

“Don’t get ahead of yourself, you’ll just cause problems for the rest of us.” Green scowled, gently pushing Blue off his shoulders. Gold laughed, prompting Blue, Kotone, and Red to follow along. Green huffed. “I’m serious here.”

“Silver.” Crys interjected, her tone calm but probing. “Do you know why I was the first to go through the evolution process? Or how it even ocurred?”

Gold and Blue quieted to pay attention. Kotone elbowed Crys’s side lightly and half-whispered, “Gonna do some research and experimenting on all of us, are you?”

“N-No, no.” Crys, flustered, shoved Kotone’s elbow away. “It’s just. It’s good to know in case future trips lead to more surprising events.”

Kotone giggled and sat back, satisfied for the moment. Silver stared down at the keys of his laptop, tapping them lightly as he turned the thoughts over in his mind. After a few tense seconds, Silver closed his eyes and shook his head. “I don’t know.”

Crys deflated. “Oh.” She perked back up, pulling out a notepad and a pencil from her bag. “That’s okay, we can come up with several hypotheses as to why it happened and teast each of them out when we get the chance. If we can figure it out, who knows?”

Green leaned over slightly, trying to get a look at Crys’ notes. “Add to that how we’re not even sure if the evolution’s permanent or not. Can you switch between them or are you stuck as one or the other?”

“Maybe it works like my javelins and how Silver has to load more in when I run out.” Blue hummed, looking up to the ceiling. “Or, at least load the new form in.”

“It would’ve really come in handy when Gold doused you that one time, right?”

Kotone winked over at Gold, he grinned automatically in response. They were doing their nerd thing, so he’d tuned them out a while ago. Crys groaned at the memory while Red laughed. Silver studied the laptop screen for a minute, then stood. “It’s late.”

“All ready?” Blue whined, shooting up to her feet. “We haven’t had the proper time to celebrate!”

“You’re perfectly capable of that without me.” Silver crossed the room to the door, undeterred. “Make sure to return my laptop in the morning.”

Blue and Kotone continued to protest, but Silver left the room. That guy was a machine. Gold sometimes wondered if that was how he could be so dang pretty. Crys stood, stretching her arms over her head. “I need to turn in for the night, too.”

“Yeah, you should rest.” Kotone nodded, hopping over to give Crys a quick hug. “Have a good sleep!”

“Thanks.”

Crys hugged Kotone back, then waved and left the room. She seemed eager to leave. Maybe they had a test tomorrow Gold had forgotten about? But their excursions into Johto always left them tired. And it wasn’t like Silver to just leave his laptop, Red’s place in the party or not.

Gold grimaced and stood. He was putting way too much thought into this. Kotone, of course, noticed immediately. “Party’s no fun without Crys here, right?”

“How could it be fun with that crazy bitch around?” Gold shook his head, his tone surprisingly monotone. He must’ve been more tired than he thought. “I just need to sleep after that shit.”

“Following them?”

Green kept his gaze on the wall, away from anyone else. Probably had the most judging expression and that was why the avoidance. Blue and Kotone looked confused before both snapping to realisation and grinning at Gold. Their grins were a little too eager, too frightening. Gold laughed nervously, backing up towards the door, his one exit out of this shark’s den. “All right, see you guys tomorrow bye!”

Blue and Kotone squealed as Gold ran out the door. Green was really something else (and definitely rubbing off on Kotone in all the wrong ways). All those girls were crazy. Gold heaved out a breath and headed down the dorm hall, towards his room.

Out of the corner of his eyes, he noticed Crys’ bright hair bobbing down the hall. And then the rest of Crys, for that matter. It made Gold pause, drawn to the sight. Her room wasn’t down this way. And it especially wasn’t outside. Which was where she was headed.

Gold took a moment to think about this. On the one hand, he really was tired and wanted to pass out on his bed. On the other hand, he’d totally be down to meet up with Crys and Silver in the middle of the night for an illicit affair. Of course, they’d include Kotone, too, because she’d hate to get left out.

Either way, Gold found himself following after Crys before he could properly weigh his options. He smirked to himself and slipped out the door, into the night and the now empty campus of their boarding school. Crys was out there, though pretty damn well hidden among the bushes and trees and greenery of their school. Gold jogged to catch up with her. She turned to look over his way, probably from the noise, right as he drew up behind her. He raised a hand in greeting, grinning. “This doesn’t look like your room.”

“Gold!” She squeaked, her expression absolutely mortified (and cute as heck). Flustered, she stuttered and sputtered cutely, too. “What are you – I-I’m just – shut up!”

She grabbed his arm and pulled him further into the bushes with her, slapping a hand over his mouth before he could ask what the hell she was doing. She kept her gaze trained on something further ahead for a pensive half-minute before finally releasing him. He tried to keep up an upset act as much as possible. “What the–”

“Quiet.” She shushed his shout, still looking off in the distance. “I noticed Silver heading out of the dorms after we left. I didn’t really want to follow him, but…”

“You kinda just did.” Gold deflated. No fantasy three-way make out for him. At least, not tonight. “And now we’re in it.”

“No.” Crys shook her head, turning to face Gold. “We’re going to stop being suspicious jerks and head to bed. Hopefully–”

“Isn’t that the direction of the factory?”

Gold pointed the way Crys had been staring. She gave an exasperated exhale. “Technically, yes, but–”

“Then we should go check it out.”

Gold darted off through the bushes and towards their secret passageway. Crys, of course, followed in hot pursuit. She looked upset, but really, she had to be as curious as he was. What would Silver need back at the factory?

They went down into the sewers, skated to the entrance to the old abandoned factory. They’d made good time, too, considering they nearly ran into Silver and blew their cover. But, mercifully, Silver didn’t notice and went inside the factory, all the way down to the computer room. Crys lead the way down the stairs (“I didn’t even know these existed!” Gold had remarked) and they stopped just above the computer room. More halfway in the ceiling than in the room. Silver sat at the computer, a different screen pulled up on the monitor.

“That’s the logo for the Rockets!” Crys hissed, pointing down into the room. Gold assumed she was talking about the red ‘R’ displayed on the screen. More surprising to Gold was that this computer did other things than process the virtual world. Crys pulled back, apprehensive. “They’re a crime organisation based in Italy. Why would there be a link to them here?”

Gold frowned, unable to think up a response. Silver, below them, gave a soft sigh before speaking. “I’m here. With today’s report. Father.”

The Secret Codes (Original Version) 1/2

I’d like to remind everyone that this is a look into my past for my 150 followers milestone. This story was created and written within 2005-2006!! I’d also like to remind people that I’ve edited it only to the point of spell checking, and changing a couple of names which had some IRL connections (And per the requests of some of my IRL friends I threw into this story). All grammar, punctuation, formatting, point of views (povs), plot holes, and self-censoring remains in tact. Fun fact; my most commonly misspelled word twelve years ago was “toward”. It mostly was spelled “Twrod” or “Towse” or something to that extent.

Enough of me rambling. Enjoy me at my worst/newest.

Part 1 Code Amy

Chapter 1 The New Arrival (night before school started)(normal POV) Now that XANA is out of the computer he thought he should get rid of those kids Jerimie, Yumi, Odd, Ulrich, And Aelita. "But how am I going to do it?" Xana thought, "Wait I could become human and get rid of them when most venerable!". So he transformed into a pre-teen with black hair, a blood red shirt, blue jeans, kinda tan skin, and a medallion with his symbol on it. "now to get a file into the government files" he thought. So he did and she also signed up for the academy his arch rivals attended. (morning of the first day of school) Finally the summer was over and it was back to school. During the summer, Aelita stayed at Yumi's house. "So how was your summer Jerimie"? Aelita asked. "Fine" Jerimie responded. "Same as mine, no Xana attacks at all" Aelita said. "I know, ever since Xana got out of the supercomputer there have been no attacks at all" Jerimie said. "Must be scheming" Ulrich said. Xana was unknowingly was watching his enemies talk about their summer, he heard a rolling suitcase in the distance. At the gate was a girl of 13 with straight long brown hair, same skin tone as XANA's, a black shirt with hearts on it that also has spots of colors on it, Brown jeans, and pink and gray tennis-shoes. "Oh great it's her" Xana murmured in sarcasm. She walked into the school grounds looking nervous and bumped into Sissi. "Hey watch were your going!" Sissi shouted at her. "I'm sorry, i wasn't looking were I was going" The new girl said and walked off. The girl went up to Yumi and tapped her on the shoulder then Yumi turned around. "Excuse me" the new girl said, "I’m new here can you take me to the principal’s office please?". "Sure thing" Yumi responded. "Thanks" the new girl said as they headed towards the principal's office. When they arrived there the new girl knocked on the door. "Come in" said the principal they did. "Hello I’m new here can I have a map of the school and my dorm room number please?" she asked. "Sure thing but what's your name?" responded the principal. "It's Amy" Amy said, "Amy Liane Karren, sir". "Yes we have been expecting you Amy here is a map and your dorm room number and your class list" the principal said, "Your parents suggested a double". "Thanks and ok" Amy said. "Now you must be getting ready before classes start" he said. "Ok I will" Amy said. Amy and Yumi walked out of the principal's office and Amy found her dorm in no time and her dorm partner was Aelita. "Aelita is that really you!" Amy said. "Yes it is, I can't believe your back Amy I missed you so much!" Aelita responded as they hugged. "I know it's been so long" Amy said. After they unpacked they went and found the others at a bench. "Hey friends this is Amy" Aelita said, "she is my best friend before she moved to America and now". "Hi" Ulrich, Jerimie, Yumi, and Odd said together. "Amy this is Odd, Jerimie, Ulrich, and Yumi my other best friends" Aelita said. "Pleasure to meet you all" Amy said to the gang. "Well this is going to be more fun then I thought it would" Xana muttered with a evil looking smile.

Chapter 2 A Secret Is Revealed (Around when classes start)(Amy's POV) "Well classes are about to start Amy, Where are you suppose to go?" Yumi asked. "I'm suppose to go to Physics 7th grade" I responded. "Hey us to!" Ulrich, Odd, Aelita, and Jerimie said together. "Great we can go together!" I said. we all made it to class in time and i was requested to stand outside of the classroom with the other new student. "All right class, settle down!" Miss. Hertz said to the class "we have two new students, one named Amy Karren from America, come in Amy". And so I did and Introduced myself. "And the other is named.. uh I can't quite pronounce it" Miss. Hertz said and the other student walked in "young man what is your name?". he stood right next to me and said "My name is XANA". I was shocked as soon as he said that and so was Jerimie, Ulrich, Odd, and Aelita. "Right, now Amy you can sit behind Odd and Xana go sit behind Herve over there" Miss. Hertz said as she pointed to our seats. Xana and I sat in the seats Miss. Hertz assigned us. As the teacher was teaching I heard Odd whisper to Jerimie "Hey Einstein do you think that is really Xana?" Odd asked Jerimie. "I'm not sure, but if it is Xana we have got to be very careful around him" responded Jerimie. Xana stared at us with an evil smile and I was getting creeped out by it. Soon the bell rang and we went off to our next class. (Lunch time, Cafiteria)(Aelita's POV) We all sat down at the table we usually sat at and made sure Xana wasn't around. "Hey can I sit with you guys, I got nowhere else to sit" Asked Amy. "Sure Amy you can sit here" I said to Amy. "I can't believe Sissi asked Xana to go out with her!" said Odd. "No wait Xana is here!?" Yumi asked in shock. "Yeah he is here as human" Amy answered. "Oops" said Odd. "You Know about Xana?" I asked Amy. "Know about XANA, I helped Franz Hopper built him!" Amy responded to my question. The rest of the gang and me were shocked about this discovery. "Honestly I helped with the terrain, and Beta tested with your mom Aelita" Amy continued. "My mom Beta Tested the Scanners?" I asked. "Yup, unfortunately wen she did it she didn't make it into Lyoko" Amy said, "I made it just fine and I know that Xana somehow turned evil, I tried to stop your dad from going to Lyoko but it was to late". (Flashback)(normal POV) "Aelita this way, hurry" Franz Hopper said to his daughter. "Ok" Aelita said back. they went to the factory. "W-Where are we daddy?" Aelita asked "In my factory" Franz answered, "now come on". They went down to the floor with the scanners "See you in a minute honey" Franz said as he entered the scanner. "See you in a minute daddy" said Aelita as Amy rushed in. "Wait Franz don't do it!" Amy yelled but it was to late Franz and Aelita where in Lyoko. "No I’m to late!" Amy said crying. (end of flashback)

Chapter 3 Xana's Attack (still cafeteria)(Odd's POV) As Amy told all she knew about Lyoko and Xana, I felt like we were all being watched. "Uh Amy sorry to interrupt but I think Xana is watching us!" I said. "Odd, are you sure" Amy asked me. "I'm sure of it" I responded and right I was for once Xana was watching them from outside the cafeteria. "Now for Phase Two to get rid of those brats once and for all!" Xana said quietly while holding his medallion. He walked to the factory (the way the gang does from school) and he went to the Super Calculator and began typing something on the screen. "Now the fate of that little pest Amy will be sealed forever Muhahahaha!" Xana said in a very evil way. (back with the gang)(Jerimie's POV) "Hey I just realized that there still might be an activated tower in Lyoko!" I said to the gang. "Then what are we waiting for let's go deactivate it" Odd said confidently. "Yeah, But won't that separate Xana from the supercomputer permanently? Amy asked."Uh maybe" I said. "Unless.." Amy whispered. "Unless what?" Yumi asked. "Well I do remember Franz Doing another code besides CODE: LYOKO" Amy said, "but I forget the code and what it does". After she said that the bell rang for the next class. Luckily none of us were in Xana's class that period because we discussed our plan we were Lyoko during class. The bell finally rang for the end of the day. "Come on let's get to the factory before Xana does!" Aelita said "That sounds like a good plan besides who knows what Xana could do to the Super Calculator if he gets there first" Soon they were at the factory bridge and Xana was there. "Going somewhere?" Xana asked with an evil smile. "Xana, Just go away your not part of the Supercomputer anymore so you should have no reason to be here" Amy Shouted at Xana. "Oh but I do" Xana said still with an evil smile. Just then Xana used his fast running ability and kidnapped Amy. "AHH! GUYS HELP!" Amy screamed in terror as Xana ran towards the scanner room. "Don't worry we'll get you back Amy!" Odd said as the gang ran after Xana. They got to the Super Calculator room just when.. "Virtualization!" Xana Shouted and Amy appeared in Lyoko in the forest region. She looked Just Like Zelda in Lyoko only she had a staff in her hand. The staff was made of pure Silver and at the top was a Gold star. "Xana What are you up to!?" I shouted. He just sat there with his evil look on his face. Also he raised his medallion and we were all in Lyoko but Xana wasn't, he was in complete control even when he was not in the supercomputer.

Chapter 4 The Fight In Lyoko Part 1 (In Lyoko)(Yumi's Pov) "Jerimie, you look ridiculous!" Amy said laughing. "Hey! Cut that out" Jerimie demanded. "Ok ok don't get so mad gosh" Amy said. I looked at Jerimie and tried not to laugh, his Lyoko form was a mixture if what Ulrich looked like back when we thought Lyoko was called Xanadu and bionic metal stuff. "Look out here comes the unwelcoming committee" Ulrich said and right he was, 5 of each monster (except the Sciphizoa of course) was headed toward them. "What are those black and white monsters?" Amy asked. "They are called Tarantulas" I responded. "Charge!" Odd yelled and everyone except Jerimie and Aelita head towards the monsters to battle. "Uh I think I'll stay here and guard Aelita" said Jerimie. "Ok Romeo" I said laughing Jerimie blushed and Aelita did to. "Amy look out, behind you!" I yelled to Amy. The Sciphizoa was behind Amy and it picked her up and started to take her memory. "Ya" I yelled as I threw one of my fans at the Sciphizoa's tentacles and let Amy go. "Amy are you ok?" I asked Amy as I helped her up. "Yeah I’m fine" Amy responded, "OUCH". Amy got hit by a Blok's laser in the arm. "I thought we had life points" Amy said in pain. "I guess Xana has other plans for you" I said as I helped her up again. "By the way what was that squidy thing doing?" Amy asked me. "First off, that squidy thing is called the Sciphizoa and secondly it was sucking out you memory" I responded. "Why do you think it was after me?" Amy asked. "I don't know but is seems Xana wants to get rid of you for some reason" I responded, "now let's go kick some monster butt". "Right behind you Yumi" Amy said. "No need to ladies we got them all" Odd said triumphantly. "Oh man i wanted to beat up that new monster" Amy said complaining. "Hey where is Jerimie and Aelita?" Ulrich asked. "Over here" Aelita yelled from the north point of the sector. "We check every tower in the sector and none of them are active so we think the activated tower is in Sector 5" Jerimie said. "Well let's go Sector 5 is my favorite sector in Lyoko!" Amy said. "Ok" everyone said in agreement. "S-C-I-P-I-O SCIPIO" everyone said and the teleporter appeared and soon they were in Sector 5. "I hate that teleporter" Odd said with a queasy felling. "Grr I hope they don't find it" Xana said to himself, "well I guess I'll have to take care of them myself". He started up the transfer program and he when into a scanner and he was in Lyoko (Sector 5 to be exact).

Chapter 5 The Fight In Lyoko Part 2 (Sector 5 in Lyoko)(Xana's POV) I appeared in Sector 5 still in the form of the boy I was on Earth but I had a black clock on with my symbol on it and my eyes glowed bright red. Behind me was an army of monsters ready to take out those brats. I led them into the room with the tower and my enemies were all there. Ulrich turned around and was shocked about my monster army. "Oh crap" Ulrich said. What's wrong Ulrich?" the gang asked and they saw all the monsters and me. "Is that who I think it is?" Odd asked. "I'm afraid it is Xana, Odd" Amy said to Odd as the monsters started to charge toward everyone (except Xana of course). "I'm going to try to deactivate the tower, I remember the code but I think it only works for me. Amy said to Aelita. "Go for it and be careful" Aelita responded. Amy ran as fast as she could to the tower but I stopped her from reaching it and the Sciphizoa was right next to me. "Face it Amy your time is up" I said to her in a taunting manner. "Not if I can help it" Amy said as she ran towards me with the staff pointing in my direction. Quickly I grabbed the staff and threw her off to the side with a clunk. I walked up toward her and said "It's over for you and you know it". "Sciphizoa, drain her memory until not a speck of memory is left" I said to the Sciphizoa and it obeyed. It picked Amy up and started to suck out her memory again. Yumi looked back a moment later and saw what was happening to Amy. "XANA YOU CRAZY SON OF A *****!" Yumi said furiously as she threw her fan towards me. It hit me taking 20 points of damage leaving me left with 80 life points. I transformed into her and threw a fan at her and she devirtualized. I transformed back into my original virtual form and watched Amy's memory get taken away. Suddenly Ulrich's sword cut thought the Sciphizoa's tentacles and let Amy go and she laid on the ground looking weak. "I-I feel so weak" Amy said in a faint voice. Ulrich ran up to her and asked "Amy, are you ok?". "Ulrich, tell Aelita the code is CODE: AMY" Amy said before she fainted. "XANA WHAT DID YOU DO TO HER!" Ulrich said yelling. "Oh just a little virus than makes it when the Sciphzoa drains her memory it also drains her energy!" I said laughing. "YOUR GOING TO PAY FOR THAT" Ulrich said as the others came to see what was going on. "Aelita, Amy says the code is CODE: AMY" Ulrich whispered to Aelita. "Thanks Ulrich I'll go deactivate the tower" Aelita whispered back before she ran toward the tower. Jerimie, Odd, and Ulrich got out there weapons prepared to fight. The monsters came in. "Stop, this is my battle so stand down!" Xana told his monsters. Aelita entered the tower and reached the middle of it as I started to battle Odd, Ulrich, and Jerimie. When Aelita reached the top Jerimie was devirtualized. Aelita put her hand on the screen and it said AELITA. Then Odd and Ulrich were devirtualized when I realized they were distracting me. The screen in the tower then said CODE and Aelita typed AMY. "NOO" I screamed as the tower deactivated and I disappeared into the supercomputer. "So that's what the code does, deactivate the tower and put Xana back in the supercomputer" Aelita said. as she exited the tower and ran towards Amy who is still fainted. "Amy, Amy can you hear me?" Aelita asked as tears started to come out of here eyes, "Amy?". She cried on her shoulder in sadness and Amy put her hand on Aelita's back. "I can hear you fine Aelita" Amy said. Aelita was now crying for joy because she knew that Amy was ok. "Oh Jerimie you should lunch a return to the past right now" Amy suggested. "Way ahead of you, Return To the Past Now" Jerimie said as a bubble appeared and surrounded Earth. (Physics Classroom)(normal POV) "All right class settle down" Miss Hertz said to the class, "we have a new student named Amy Karren and she is from America, Amy please come in". Amy walked in the room and stood in front of the class And smiled at Aelita, Jerimie, Odd, and Ulrich. "I hope you like it here in France Amy" Miss Hertz said to Amy. "Oh something tells me that I will" Amy said still smiling and thinking about the adventure she just had. (End of Chapter) (End of Story)

Part 2 Code Hopper

Chapter 1 Amy's Amnesia (night of the first day of school)(Amy and Aelita's room)(normal POV) "Man what a long day" Amy said as she collapsed on her pillow. "Yeah it was long" Aelita said. Amy took out her IPod shuffle and started to listen to "Breaking Free". "What song are you listening to?" Aelita asked. "Breaking Free, from a movie" Amy responded. Suddenly there was a loud knock on the door. "ARE YOU ASLEEP YET IF NOT GO TO BED NOW!" Jim yelled. So they did and they both had nightmares and woke up a few times in the middle of the night. (morning)Cafeteria)(Amy's POV) "I'm not so hungry right now" I said morning. "Did you have nightmares to Amy?" Aelita asked. "Yeah some of them were just plain weird and they were in the past" I responded. "Hey since your not hungry, can I have your food?" Odd asked. "Here I don't want it" I said handing Odd my breakfast. Odd smiled in a funny way and started eating. Soon the bell rang for the other students to arrive and we met up with Yumi. "so what are we going to do about Xana?" Yumi asked. "Let's shut him down during lunch and say we were eating outside to the teachers" Jerimie responded. "Sounds good" Yumi said then looked over at Aelita and I. "What's wrong with you two?" Yumi asked Aelita and I. "Nightmares" we said together. "Oh sounds like bad ones to me" Yumi said. "Yup" I said. then the bell rang for first period. "You'll feel better once we shut down Xana" Jerimie said to me as we walked to class. "I guess" I said back. (The Factory, Supercomputer Floor)(Lunch time)(Ulrich's POV) "Come on let's do this together!" I said to the gang. "Yeah, time to shut Xana down once and for all!" Amy said. we all put one hand on the switch. "On three, one two three!" Jerimie said and we pulled down the switch and Amy suddenly fainted. "Turn it on turn it on!" Aelita said when she saw Amy faint. So we did and Amy woke up. "W-Where am I?" Amy asked in confusion. "Very funny Amy" I said sarcastically. "No seriously where am I and who are you guys?" Amy asked. "and who am I?". "Uh oh I think Amy has amnesia" Jerimie said. "What is amnesia and is Amy my name?" Amy asked still in confusion. "Yes Amy is your name and amnesia is when you forget everything" Yumi answered. "We better take her to the Infirmary" I said. So we did take her there. (Infirmary)(same POV) "So what happened" asked the nurse. "Uh she got hit by a baseball on the head hard by some toddlers" I lied. "Well if that is the case, it should only be a few hours for the amnesia to wear off" the nurse said. "Ok thanks we'll go to class now" Odd said. "Now you need some rest Amy" the nurse said to her. "Ok I guess I will” Amy said. Soon it was the end of the day and we when to check up on Amy. "Hey Amy you ok?" Aelita asked as they walked in the door. "Aelita?" Amy said as she woke up. "Why am I in the infirmary" Amy asked. "Xana took two fragments from you when you were in Lyoko, and when we shut off Xana you fainted and then when we turned it back on you got amnesia" Jerimie explained. "Oh I see and I’m guessing one of the fragments was a memory fragment" Amy said. "Must have been" Yumi said.

Chapter 2 A Message From Franz (Hallway)(Aelita's POV) As we told Amy what happened to her, I was thinking why Xana let himself get into the supercomputer so easily. "Aelita are you there?" Amy asked. "Huh, were you talking to me?" I asked. "Yes I was" Amy responded. Suddenly Jerimie's laptop vibrated. "Xana's attacking" Jerimie said with no surprise. "Let's go deactivate that tower!" Amy said walking away. "Oh no not you" Jerimie said as he grabbed Amy's arm, "we can't risk you getting caught by the Sciphizoa". Jerimie looked at his computer as the others were going down the hall. "Come on Jerimie" Odd yelled to Jerimie. "Hold on, it's not Xana, it's Franz!" Jerimie said and we stopped and ran toward Jerimie. "Your right it is my father" I said to Jerimie. "Franz can activate towers?" Amy asked. "Yes, we don't know how he does it but he can" Yumi answered. We went to Jerimie’s dorm and when we got there, Milly was typing on Jerimie’s computer. "It must be him trying to reach us again" Jerimie said. "Looks like it" Ulrich said. We left her alone and a few hours later she got off and went to her dorm. "I'll try to decode it, in the meantime, you can go back to your dorms" Jerimie said, "I'll contact you when I decode it fully". "I got to get home anyway" Yumi said and she ran off towards her home. (The Middle of the Night)(Jerimie’s POV) "Finally I'm done decoding" I said to myself. I took out my cell phone and told everyone to come. "It's a video clip" I said to everyone once they all arrived. "Just play it Jerimie" Amy said. So I did. Suddenly Franz Hopper appeared on screen. "Hello everyone, thank you so much for putting Xana back in the supercomputer" Franz said in the video, "Amy, if your watching this you should know what Xana is after but I'll tell you anyway". "You remember when Xana made those codes, well I hope you do because he is after them" Franz said, "You have got to protect them at all costs, and you know which one to guard the most". "Right now I'm somewhere in Sector 5, Xana is holding me prisoner in exchange for the codes!" Franz continued, "Jerimie, I can help you in finding my DNA-code but it will be dangerous and you must come to Lyoko". "Oh no Xana just figured out what I'm doing, Amy remember protect the secret codes with your life!" Franz said. The screen showed the Xana sign for two seconds then the video clip stopped and we all stared at Amy. "So that is why the Sciphizoa went after you only" I said. "I can't tell anyone the codes it will only put you in danger" Amy said. "We understand Amy" Odd said. Amy started to cry with her knees on the floor and said "I shouldn't have came back here, I knew this was going to happen". "Don't worry we won't let Xana get those codes" Aelita said as she patted Amy on the back. "Thanks guys, your the best friends I've ever had" Amy said as she wiped up her tears, "We should get to bed now". We all went to bed unknowing that Herb and Nicolas heard everything. "We got to tell Sissi about this" Herb said. After they went to sleep Xana activated a tower. He came out and sucked Amy into the computer without a sound.

Chapter 3 Escape From The Supercomputer Part 1 (Inside the Supercomputer)(Amy's POV) I woke up to be in a very strange place. It was all white and the world of Lyoko was beneath. "Where am I?" I asked. "Your on my turf now" said a voice from a distance. "Xana, what did you do?!" I yelled not knowing where Xana was, "wait if Xana is here that must mean..". "That your in the supercomputer with me" Xana said as he suddenly appeared in front of me in his Lyoko form. (At School)(Sissi's POV) "Good work, now lets go find them" I said to Herb and Nicolas. "Hey as anyone seen Amy?" Aelita asked the gang. "Isn't she suppose to be in your room?" Jerimie asked Aelita back. "Well when I got up she wasn't" Aelita said back. "Well we haven't seen her" Odd said. Then I walked up to them ready to fine out what was going on. "Well well well if it isn't the miss I'm so popular" Odd said. "Very funny Odd, now what's this about secret codes and this Xana thing?" I asked. "Hey how did you know about.." Odd said. Then he realized Herb and Nicolas were spying on the last night. "I'm waiting, by the way where is that Amy girl?" I asked I was impatiently waiting for an answer. "We don't know" Answered Ulrich. "Excuse us for a moment" Aelita said as they huddled up. "Looks like we are going to have to tell he everything about Lyoko and Xana" Yumi whispered. "We should show her to but not have her go into Lyoko" Jerimie whispered. "Ok" Everyone said in agreement. "We will tell and show you if you promise not to tell anyone" Aelita said. "What do you mean by showing?" I asked. then they took Herb, Nicolas and I to the old abandoned factory. "What are we doing here?" Herb asked. "Get in the elevator" Odd said. So we did and the elevator went down a floor and then the doors opened up to this weird lab. "Is this where you have been going all this time?" I asked. "Yup, and Aelita came from the world we told you about on the way here" Jerimie explained. Suddenly the computer was typing by itself. "Help I'm trapped in the Supercomputer with Xana, from Amy" Jerimie said, "Oh no we got to get her out of there!". We'll head for the scanners" Odd said. "Wait Sissi, Herb, Nicolas, go with them, Yumi stay here" Jerimie said. "But you said we weren’t going to have them go to Lyoko and why are you going to Lyoko?" Ulrich said. "If we wan to set Franz Hopper free I have to go to Lyoko and we need all the help we can get" Jerimie responded. "Ok" Yumi said. Then Everyone except Yumi went to the scanners. "Is this safe?" Herb, Nicolas and I asked at the same time. "Yup it is" Odd responded as the doors closed. "Transfer... Scanner... Virtualization!" Yumi shouted and we appeared in a weird Desert place. We looked different, Herb was a Ninja, Nicolas was an Archer and I was a Mage. “So is this all of Lyoko?" I asked. "Nope there are 4 more sectors and one of them is part of Xana himself" Jerimie said. "Let's go there now, maybe we'll find Amy there" Odd said. So we headed north but we were stopped by weird spider looking monsters. "Monsters! Ah!" I screamed. "You have powers try to use them" Odd yelled to me and my gang.

Chapter 4 Escape From The Supercomputer Part 2 (In Lyoko, Desert region)(Normal POV) "How do I use my powers?" Sissi asked. "Just think" Odd said. "Ok I'll try Sissi said. She thought hard and lasers came out of her eyes. "Cool" Sissi said. "Laser Arrow!" Odd shouted as he fired one of his arrows and destroyed a monster. "Check this out, Elemental arrow, Fire!" Nicolas shouted and all the rest of the monsters where destroyed. "Lets get to the end of the sector quick f we want to get Amy back" Jerimie said as they ran to the end of the sector. "Now what?" Sissi asked. "S-C-I-P-I-O SCIPIO" said Odd, Ulrich, Aelita and Jerimie and the transporter appeared and soon they were in Sector 5. "Oh man I always hate going in there" Odd said. "If you throw you better not do it on me!" Sissi said. "AHHHH" Yelled a voice in the distance. "That sounded like Amy!" Ulrich said. They ran toward the screaming and soon they reached a room were they saw Amy running from a weird shadow thing. "What is that?" Herb, Nicolas and Sissi said together. "GUYS IT'S XANA, HELP!" Amy yelled as she ran up to all of them. "Uh what is Sissi, Nicolas and Herb doing in Lyoko?" Amy asked as she made a shield using her staff. "We need all the help we can get" Ulrich said. "Those codes will be mine!" Xana shouted as he shapeshifted from the shadow thing to his true Lyoko form. "I'll never let you get them Xana, so just go to ****!" Amy shouted back. "Ouch that has to hurt" Sissi said. "Aelita, Jerimie, go get Franz's Materialization and DNA-codes and Sissi go with them" Amy whispered. "Ok" Aelita, Jerimie, and Sissi whispered back and they ran off and some monsters followed them. "Why don't you just give up those codes now so you don't have to die for me to get them" Xana suggested. "NEVER IN YOUR LIFE XANA!" Amy shouted back. "There goes that temper of yours again, you do remember what happened when you lost your temper, right?" Xana asked (Flashback)(Same POV) "Franz I made it to Lyoko it more than we imagined!" Amy said to Franz whom was outside of Lyoko. "Bring up a visual so I can see" Franz said. "Ok here you go" Amy said. "My gosh, Amy your right it's the perfect place to live" Franz said. Suddenly a Blok hit Amy in the arm with it's laser. "OUCH, hey your not suppose to do that to me!" Amy Shouted as she stared to get mad. "Xanadu must have a bug in it" Franz said (Xana was originally called Xanadu). "Take this!" Amy shouted and she got even more mad. "I don't want you calling me Xanadu anymore, now just call me Xana" Xana said. "What do you want! Xana!?" Amy said as she almost lost her temper. "Oh nothing except for you to go away forever!" Xana said as he appeared hovering over the digital sea" "Xana!" Amy said as she ran towards him ready to fight and she lost her temper. Xana quickly moved out of the way and Amy was falling towards the Digital Sea. "Amy! no!" Franz said as he quickly devirtualized her. "I-I don't know what came over me, I'm sorry Franz" Amy apologized. (End Of Flashback) "Yeah well this time you don't have a Digital Sea for me to fall into!" Amy said as she ran toward Xana. He quickly moved just like last time and Amy ran right into a wall.

Chapter 5 Escape From The Supercomputer Part 3 (Lyoko, Sector 5)(Xana's POV) I laughed as Amy foolishly ran into the wall behind me. "Hey you did that on purpose!" Amy said as she was getting mad. "Well Duh, what did you think I would do that on accident?" I said to Amy taunting her. "Xana you are starting to get on my last nerve!" Amy yelled. "I thought I already was on your last nerve" I said as I was still taunting her long enough for the Sciphizoa to grab her. It picked her up and was taking her memory along with her energy thanks to that virus I put in her. (Lyoko, Outer part of Sector 5)(Aelita's POV) "Aelita have you found that DNA-code or the materialization code for Franz Hopper yet?" Jerimie asked as he was battling the Manta Rays with Sissi. "I think I just found his DNA-code!" I said, "I'm sending it up to you Yumi". "Ok got it Aelita" Yumi said, "I'll put it in the place of the Super Calculator Xana can't get into". So she did just that. "I found the other code!" I said, "Here you go Yumi". "Good work Aelita now lets go help the others" Jerimie said as they ran back to the other room. (Back in the inner part of Sector 5)(Xana's POV) "Xana let her go!" Odd and Ulrich shouted at me at the same time. "Not until those codes are mine!" I said. "Elemental Arrow, Ice" Nicolas shouted as he fired an Arrow at me and I was frozen(Nicolas mixed air and water). I broke free of the ice and lunched some dark thunder at the one who fired the arrow at me and he devirtualized. Suddenly Jerimie, Sissi, and Aelita were back in the room. "Oh no, look, Amy's memory is getting drained!" Aelita said as she pointed to Amy and the Sciphizoa. Suddenly the Sciphizoa let go of Amy and she fell on the floor. "Finally after all these years the secret codes are mine again! I said in victory, "you can have her back now, she has no use for me anymore". Every Lyoko warrior ran toward Amy's lifeless body. Aelita got down on her knees and started to cry. "Amy, please don't go, we need you" Aelita said in tears to the lifeless virtual body. Suddenly monster in every region where going into towers and entered the secret code Code: XANA. The towers glowed red from the inside out and Lyoko turned dark. I started to devirtualize and get separated from the supercomputer and my monsters including the Sciphizoa materialized. "Goodbye Yumi" I said to Yumi as my monster fired at her and she either fainted or died I couldn't tell but there was blood on the floor. "Now for my takeover of this pathetic world" I said. (Lyoko)(Normal POV) Everyone in Lyoko was crying for Amy's death. Suddenly Amy was lifting off the ground with a white arura around her. "Franz is returning the memory Xana didn't take with him to Earth!" Jerimie said and everyone stopped crying.

Chapter 6 Xana's Earth Takeover (Lyoko, Sector 5)(Ulrich’s POV) We watched silently as Franz was returning Amy's memory(Like how he did to Aelita in The Key). Soon Amy woke up and we all cheered for it. "Why is everyone cheering?" Amy asked in confusion. "Xana taunted you long enough for the Sciphizoa to grab you and took the secret codes and once Xana was out of Lyoko Franz returned your memory" I explained to Amy. "WHAT XANA HAS THE SECERET CODES?" Amy said in shock. "Yup he does" I said. "Oh man I can't believe this happened!" Amy said in panic. "Calm down Amy!" Aelita said. "How are we suppose to get out of here?" Amy asked. "Leave that to me" said Nicolas who was outside of Lyoko in front of the Super Calculator, "I hid from Xana and when he left I went out of hiding". "Good thinking, now get us home" Amy said. So Nicolas did and Jerimie, Sissi, Odd, Amy, Herb, Aelita and I went up to the Super Calculator room. "YUMI" I shouted as i saw Yumi on the floor with blood around her, "Yumi, I never got the chance to tell you this but I love you Yumi" I said then I cried. Yumi woke up and said "Ulrich, I love you to". "I'll get to work on getting Franz Hopper Materialized" Jerimie said, "In the mean time you all have to go fight Xana and make sure he doesn't take over the world". "Ok" Everyone except Jerimie said. So we ran off to fight Xana. As they left Jerimie started to type on the computer. (Kadic Boarding School grounds)(Normal POV) Xana started to cause his havoc at the school his rivals attended. "Muhahahaha yes fear me for I shall be ruler of this pathetic world!" Xana said. "Not if we have anything to say about it" Yumi and Amy said in confidences. "You two, I thought you were dead!" Xana said in surprise. "Looks like fate had other plans for us" Amy said. "Well now I can finish you two off here and now" Xana said as his hands started to glow black about to launch that dark lightning. "Uh oh, Run!" Yumi said as she turned around and ran away. Amy did the same but a little late because she got hit by the dark thunder. "I hope this plan works, because if not we'll be doomed" Yumi thought.

Chapter 7 The Hidden Power (Kadic School Grounds)(Yumi's POV) I watched as Xana electrocuted Amy with his dark lightning. "Hey guys, is it ready yet?" I asked Aelita, Odd, Ulrich, Sissi, Herb, and Nicolas. "Does it look like we are done?" Sissi asked sarcastically, "get over here and help us!". "Ok ok I'll help" I said. "Come on what's taking so long?" Amy thought. "Why is she just standing there?" Xana thought, "It's like he doesn't want to run away". "Come on give me your best shot Xana!" Amy shouted. "You want my best?" Xana asked, "you got my best". Then Xana charged up for 10 seconds, just enough time to lead him out of the school grounds, and he fired and hit Amy like a direct hit. "Had enough" Xana asked. Amy could barley get up but she still wouldn't quit. "Never" Amy said. "Then it is the end for you" Xana said then she began charging. "For a long time I've been waiting a long time to say this to you" Xana said, "goodbye forever Amy". He then fired by for some reason he missed. "What?" Xana said in confusion. Amy was glowing bright pink and then she transformed into her Lyoko form with the staff and everything! "How can this be possible!?" Xana asked himself. "What the?" I asked myself as I saw Amy transform. "What is it?" Sissi asked. "Come here and check out Amy" I said. We looked at Amy and we were confused and shocked. "Time for you to go away forever Xana" Amy said. She then pit her staff in front of her and it turned into a Lyoko tower screen and it said 'Code'. Amy then typed in 'Hopper' and Xana disappeared along with all his monsters. Amy then transformed to normal and was fainted. "Amy!" Aelita shouted as she ran over to her. "Aelita, what happened?" Amy asked as she woke up. "I'll explain later for now we still have to free you from the supercomputer" Aelita said. "No need I already am" Amy said then Aelita and the rest of us were confused. "When I typed in Code: Hopper It deactivated the tower and returned my remaining memory including the secret codes" Amy explained. "Then all we need to do is get Franz Hoper free and then shut down Xana" I said. Suddenly my cell phone rang. "It's Jerimie" I said, "he says to come to the factory now". "Then let's go" Ulrich said. (Factory)(Normal POV) "I did it guys, Franz Hopper is ready for Materialization" Jerimie said. "No way!" Aelita and Amy said excitedly. "Way" Jerimie said. "Just do it Jerimie, I got a lot of questions for him" Sissi said. "Materialization Franz" Jerimie said as he did the procedure for Materialization. We then went down a floor to the scanners and in one of them was Franz Hopper. The creator of Lyoko was back on Earth at last. We all cheered except Sissi and her gang. Franz then woke up. "Thank you for freeing me" Franz said in gratitude, "now let's all go shut down Xana". We all went down a floor to the supercomputer room. "I'm not doing it you can all do it" Sissi and her gang said. "Fine by me" Amy said. "On three, one, two, three" Jerimie said. This time Amy did not faint nor did anyone. Xana was really gone. "Now we can live our lives without Xana" Odd said. (Epilogue) Franz got reinstated as a teacher at Kadic. Aelita now stays in The Hermitage with her father (After they cleaned up the place that is). it was just a week after they shut off Xana and everyone except Amy, Franz, Sissi and her gang was hanging out at the factory. Then there was an explosion at the factory. when Amy went to check it out she saw that they were all dead but Aelita was nowhere to be found. She saw a computer screen and saw the Xana symbol on it before it turned off. "How can it be possible?" Amy thought, "Xana has killed my only true best friends". Lucky for her her family had to go back to America. So Amy got on a plane hoping she can escape Xana forever...
