You can tell the YIIK devs didn't even think about accessibility issues because of all the damn flashing and rhythm minigames in here.
To be fair, not many devs actually do think about this. Ace Attorney only started including the option to turn of the screen flashing in The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles (and I am eternally grateful for it, it gets so annoying at times). But the manner in which the YIIK devs disregard it is fascinating to me.
The screen flashes purple-green when you step over poison spots, which cannot be wholly avoided due to needing a key item for progression past it in one dungeon. The flickering of the waters on the overworld map during the end of the game is another very glaring issue of this. As is in the IV update with the backgrounds of certain battles. (Not to mention how nauseating the camera movement is in the IV battles holy shit.) All of which cannot be turned off or circumvented at all.
The minigames is far more arguable as a gameplay thing, but it does not escape my notice that most of them require button presses which can be difficult if your motor skills aren't great. Or if you have shit rhythm like me lmao. Again, less so an issue, especially with the infinite time energy option, but fascinating all the same.
We really did just let YIIK get away with plagiarism because it's not as offensive as when their previous game took a whole song from Shadow of the Colossus, huh.
Even me. I was willing to let them get away with it, too, because that was the least of YIIK's crimes. But they really did take like two paragraphs of text from a published novel, pasted it into their game with no changes or indications that it was not their own writing at first, and we just let them do that. They even doubled down for the first big update, getting the text voiced when it was previously unvoiced.
Is it intertextuality or is it blatant plagiarism? Kinder people will give them a pass for it. But it is just straight plagiarism.

[ID: Digital fanart of Kay Faraday, Sebastian Debeste and Klavier Gavin from Ace Attorney.
The first image shows Kay saying something to Sebastian with a smirk on her face. She is standing with her arms folded over her chest and her head turned to Sebastian. He is leaning down to her height level with a quizzical expression on his face.
The second image is drawn in black and white. It shows Sebastian without his valedictorian jacket. He is playing a violin and looking over at younger Klavier, who is holding an electric guitar. They are both smiling. End ID]
I love these 3 so very much.

If I see one more "actually, the game takes place in 2016" or "actually, all the weird anachronisms and plot holes are from Alex being an unreliable narrator" attempt to explain away the writing issues in this game I am gonna bite something.
The timeline is all ready messy because reality is breaking. But I believe this is because Alex doesn't belong in /this/ reality over the whole "oh it's 2016 actually" explanation. Rory and Michael talk about the Y2K problem!! Alex asks what it is!! His mom talks about it to him!! We are in 1999, it's just a version of 1999 that has things from our 2016 in it!! That makes more sense to me than saying it is actually 2016 because no, the text of your game you present to your players explicitly says it is 1999. You can have your anachronism elements, this is unreality after all. An RPG is very much not real life, especially with how mundane it is here. This is this reality's daily life: fighting monsters, buying new equipment, mind melting landscapes. That is what we are presented as this reality and what is normal here. It can be an anachronistic 1999 because this is all ready very much not our reality.
Oh, right. Alex unreliable narrator. Also a bullshit explanation. Though, this one is more of a "BBC Sherlock's S4" issue. As in, we are being presented the text with no real reason to assume that these events didn't happen. How can we say that Alex never /actually/ went and met Semi in the hotel? We play through this segment ourself. Assuming it's him embellishing the story (and in reality, he just saw the images on Onism) is wild when we ourselves play through the segment. When we are not given any hint that this never actually happened. It's a fun thought experiment, but the text can't support that without also saying that 50% of what we see also doesn't matter. You want to be /very/ careful when calling the factual information being presented to the player into question. It can easily slide into feeling like "it was all a dream" sort of ending, where nothing actually changed or mattered.
Anyway. My personal interpretation is that Alex, on his way back from college, slipped into a different reality where he could be the hero. Supported by him being constantly confused by a world which should be familiar to him. He is constantly befuddled by his surroundings and what is happening to him (how very Anastasia Steele of him), //he doesn't belong here//. Which is why he draws everyone else who doesn't belong here to him (Michael - "stitched into this reality to play the childhood friend", Vella - "explicitly left her home reality", Rory - "nearly committed soul separation himself", Claudio and Chondra - "have had experience with the supernatural", Essentia - hunted down this Alex explicitly). This is the aspect I find most fascinating here; Alex's soul has such a powerful gravitational pull that he constantly draws the same few souls to him. What an intriguing character flaw.
It is too bad that the game does nothing with this.
