Wang Chuan Feng Hua Lu (忘川风华录) Masterpost
Tumblr media
Wang Chuan Feng Hua Lu (忘川风华录) is a Vocal synth (Vocaloid and SynthV) music project. It consists of songs themed around different figures throughout Chinese history. The project is a collaboration between different artists and creatives, with music and videos featuring prominent traditional Chinese elements. The project's title translates to "The Records of Magnificence of the Wangchuan" - In Chinese mythology, "Wangchuan" (or River of Forgetting) is a river in the Underworld that can rid one of their past life's memories, similar to the river Lethe.
A mobile game adaptation has also been developed by NetEast. Unfortunately, I haven't played it so I can't give much insight on it. However, I assume that its premise is similar to that of the idea behind the project as a whole: all these historical figures meeting each other in the Underworld after they died. Maybe.
You can find all the songs on Bilibili. The official Weibo can be found here. The game's website, which includes all characters appearing so far in the game, can be found here, and its Weibo can be found here.
(If you prefer YouTube, I've also put together a handy playlist. Please know that most of these videos are reposts though, so please watch the original Bilibili MVs if you can!)
This blog is where I will be posting everything I feel like I need to say about the songs in this project. A lot of it is lifted from my Twitter account but will be in much more detail. Note that I probably won't touch collab songs, or songs that don't focus solely on the project's own characters.
Disclaimer: I do not speak Chinese, nor am I an expert on Chinese history. Therefore, I cannot reliably translate the lyrics to these songs, nor my words should be taken as gospel. I am merely a nerd gushing about my hyperfixation.

I CANNOT BELIEVE THE NARRATIVE JUST FUCKING DROPPED SIMA YI INTO THE STORY LIKE THAT. this is THE most incidental guy. the backstabber to end all backstabbers who would come in from behind and steal the throne in one fell swoop. i thought he would at least get a small introduction or something like "hey this guy will be important later" NO! luo guanzhong was just like "and then Cao Cao's secretary Sima Yi--" NO HANG ON HIS SECRETARY WHOMST???

During these days, Lan xichen was tossing several articles of clothes all over his room and packing a few~ wondering if it would impress his Ayao.
On the other side, he was planning to surprise him in a special way.
Also, in Gusu, there were some rumors going around.
X: I heard that Zewu Jun is having an affair, with a hulijing
Everyone: *gasps*
That hulijing can suck out his qi energy?!
(* they can if they wanted to. But for them, they believe that hulijings can't control themselves)
Oh no. Such a nice cultivator.
He got seduced by a fox spirit.
And not any hulijings. But the huli jing emperor!
Woww!!
Xichen: the rumors are true!!! I am dating a hulijing emperor! And you can't do anything about it!!
Zewu Jun said it himself.
Omg.
Wish him good luck.
Meanwhile, Xue yang, Su she and mo xuanyu's party was in full swing. There were food, liquor, and yes~~ chaotic hulijings.
The hyper beings were trying their best to keep their composure in front of their emperor, but they couldn't. Immediately they would start fighting and ramping~ both in their full fox form and human form, then they would be pushing stuff off the table with their tails or fighting for food.
Other than that, they (I'm their human form) would just make jokes and hang out like normal friends.
Xue yang: leaving for your date, Jiggy?
Yao: yea.
Su she: I'll drop you there.
Yao: aww thank you Shanshan.
Xue yang: make sure to give Chifeng zun a deep kiss ok! Knock out with those lips of yours.
And your Yao Dimples.
Yao: *laughing* yangyang, if Dage permits me.
Xue yang: Jiggy I know that you're a top.
Yao: shhhhh.
Su she: how do you know that xue yang!
Xue yang: assumed.
And I kinda want to be topped by Jiggy.
Yao: what?
Su she: disgusting. *blushing*
Xue yang: then why are your cheeks red?
Su she: I ate food  chili.
Xue yang: did Jiggy tell you to do that?
Su she: xue yang!
Mo xuanyu: have we all thought of letting Yao gege step on us. Like he's really hot.
Yao: guys I'm still here.
Su she: right. Enough small talk! Let's go, Huangdi.
And I have asked a group of my sect members to make sure that you're safe.
Yao: so thoughtful.
Mo xuanyu: *hugs jgy* I don't want anyone hurting my Yao gege.
Yao: no one will.
Bye for now, guys. Enjoy your party!
Everyone, including the hulijings: *bow* see you soon, Huangdi.
Yao: *smiles and opens fan*
Su she: let's go.
*exits*
Xue yang: chou!! *raises cup*
Mo xuanyu: *does the same* Feng.
Xue yang: let's toast to how hot your emperor is!!
Mo xuanyu: and let's toast to his hard towards the empire!!
Everyone: toast! Toast! Toast!
Xue yang: I miss Minshan.
Mo xuanyu: really? Surpising.
Xue yang: whenever I cook, I would always stuff food in his mouth and ask him how it is. You know he's vegetarian so I would just let him sample noodles and mushrooms.
Mushrooms are his fav.
Mo xuanyu: aw. Xue gege you're very dramatic.
Mo xuanyu: but you gave him food already!
Xue yang: *cries* but I want to do it again.
Darn simp went off with Jiggy.
Mo xuanyu: you can always do it to me.
Xue yang: I'll try.
I made roast pork, stuffed with a chicken stuffed with doves. Here you go.
Mo xuanyu: mmgmfg.....delicious..
Xue yang: I know right. Eat some more!
Then try my tongue tea.
Mo xuanyu: your what?!!
Xue yang: you should know me by now.
X: xue Gongzi!! Hey!!
Xue yang: Luo. One of the naughtiest hulijings.
X: gosh. You flatter me.
Mo xuanyu: what does he do?
Xue yang: he terrorized some city before.
Luo: yep. They almost broke my leg. But I got away from the villagers.
Mo xuanyu: wow!
X: I ate all their food.
Luo: lol.
X: just broke in and gobbled it up.
Chuan: don't worry. We had defended the empire.
We hardly slack off.
Xue yang: good! Or I'll rip your tails off.
Chuan: hahahaha, I know you're joking!
Yi: omg ! Why are some of the emperor's hulijings hanging from the roof.
Mo xuanyu: had too much alcohol, lol.
Xue yang: when is Lan lips coming?
Mo xuanyu: I don't know.
Xue yang: ugh. Tardy Lan lips. Doesn't he know that it's improper to keep his emperor of a boyfriend waiting.
Mo xuanyu: ahahahaha, you're right. I guess Lan lips will come tomorrow.
Xue yang: yea. And Jiggy has to complete his mischief so.
Mo xuanyu: mhm. Team dimple is so fun.
Xue yang: *eating* agreed!
~~~~
One the other side, they arrived at Qinghe, and Yao was greeted by some of his hulijing associates.
X: Huangdi.
Yao: *smile* hi guys!
X: I'm sorry about the invasion, lol.
Yao: don't worry, my beloved hulijings. Go crazy. But don't make too much of a mess.
X:  yes Bixia.
You always pamper us.
Truly the rarest of all emperors.
Su she: yea, yaoyao is awesome!
He knows the nature of us lowly hulijings, despite him being on a superior level than us.
Yao: guys you're not lowly. Don't ever say that.
Fuying.
Fuying: yes Huangdi.
Yao: possess one of those Nie members. So that I can feel more at home.
Fuying: as you wish.
Yao: and can someone make sure that our date isn't interrupted.
X: will do, Huangdi.
Su she: enjoy, Yaoyao.
Yao: thank you. And enjoy your party.
Su she: thanks. Be safe Huangdi. I'll come back later, to get you.
Yao: great.
Su she: bye.
Yao: *turns into his full fox form, then snuck into the unclean realm.
(Nieyao's date will be in the next chapter.)
~~
An hour later, at the Jing Manor 📍
Mo xuanyu: *laughing* why is everything spinning?
Xue yang: what happened to you?! We had just finished 6 jars of liquor. You get drunk so fast?
Mo xuanyu: shhhh. I'm. Simply.....not drunk...who told you that?
I'm just fabulous.
Xue yang: ahahahaha.
Fabulous?
Mo xuanyu: yup.
Su she: *drinking* 7th one completed!
Xue yang: good job! Are you feeling to throw up?! *grin*
Su she: well I am tasting the mushrooms and noodles. But I'm going to keep my food down!
Xue yang: good! We can't vomit all over boss's floor.
Chuan: I have finished my 11th jar!
Xue yang: naughty!
Su she: watch about you, Yi?
Yi: I abstain from alcohol. For Bixia.
Su she: *hiccup* oh.
Mo xuanyu: speaking of Yao gege. How much do you guys rate him? From 1-10.
Xue yang: 100000. The man is just hot.
Mo xuanyu: He's fab. I would give him am infinity.
Su she: same.
Chou: yes he's stunning!
Chuan: let's toast to our hot emperor.
Feng: him and his imperial dimples.
We don't stand a chance in front of him.
Mo xuanyu: if he was here, I would have kissed him so passionately.
And then throw up in the corner cuz I'm a simp and simply can't handle the heat.
Xue yang: did you just admit that you're a simp. *laughing*
Mo xuanyu: yup. I'm a simp. Are you jealous!
Now where's my alcohol?
Su she: no more fot you! You're already drunk!
Mo xuanyu: I'm perfectly fine!
Su she: how much fingers am I holding up?
Mo xuanyu: t...ten?? I'm not a mathematician, Minshan!
I will tell Yao gege that you two are bullying me
Xue yang: me?? It was Su she.
Su she: when did I bully him?!
Xue yang: well it can't be Lan lips. Because Lan lips isn't here.
Su she: what does this have to do with Lan lips.
Mo xuanyu: darn Lan lips. Keeps stealing my Yao gege.
Xue yang: let's get rid of him!
And have Jiggy to ourselves.
Su she: then yaoyao will be upset with us for hurting the Lan.
Xue yang: *sighs* yea.
Su she: Why does he have to be hot and adorable?
Xue yang: I don't really know.
~~~
Later that night, xichen tries to sneak in,  dressed as an eunuch.
But infortunately he got captured by three hulijings, Hou, Yi and Xiying.
Yi: who are you?!! And how dare you trespass into our Huangdi's place!
Xiying: foreign eunuch?!! *ties him up immediately, with guqin strings*
Xichen: I want to see A-Yao. Can I see him please!
Hou: Huangdi! Have some respect!
Xichen: I want to see A-Yao Huangdi.
Yi: you never learn, don't you?!
Xiying: *steals his money* Huangdi isn't here at the moment.
Xichen: then I'll wait.
Hou: noo, we're going to report you to the Dimple council. Intruders must be reported.
Xichen: the what?
Hou: the dimple council. It's henchmen lingo for Huangdi's closest associates.
Xiying: the elite.
Xichen: ooo teach me some more henchman lingo.
Yi: ok. Huangdi is referred to as the boss.  His Manor is boss's place.
The hair that we collect from grooming is called imperial fluff.
Xichen: awwww that's so cute. And his tail is maybe called his floof.
Yi: right!
Hou: then most of our tasks are called operation dimple.
Xichen: can't this get any cuter!!
Xiying: mysterious eunuch guy, do you still want your money back?
I was just teasing you. Bixia gives us a high salary already.
He's very rich.
Xichen: I know that my A-Yao is affluent.
Yi: so you came to rob him?
Xichen: no no. He actually stole from me!
Hou: how dare you accuse the emperor.
Xichen: noo. I mean he stole My heart!
Yi: dimple council for you!
Hou: but aren't they drunk now?
Xiying: lol. That would be entertaining.
Xichen: anyways you can keep the money. Because you work for A-Yao.
Xichen: and know the dimple council. It's made up of that gremlin xue yang. That Lan traitor and mo xuanyu.
Xiying: Official Xue Gongzi, the Misty Spell Master and Odficial Mo Gongzi. Yes.
Yi: ew why is he so informal. He knows too much.
Hou: what if he's Zewu Jun?
Xichen: shhh.
Yi: how can Zewu Jun be dressed as an eunuch?!!
~moments later~
Hou: we got an Intruder!
Xue yang: *leaps and ties him up with a curtain. Then pushed him in the center of the room*  Done.
Yi: good that official Xue is the only sober one.
Su she:  *half drunk* what is Lan zhan doing here!!
Mo xunayu: *laughing* look at his little eunuch attire. Hahaha!!
Xichen: can you untie me!! I want to wait for A-Yao.
Xue yang: this dude have simps all over. Even the eunuchs?
Su she:  Lan zhan what do you want with my Bixia!
Xichen: I'm not Wangji. It's me, Xichen!
Xue yang: Lan lips isn't an eunuch, lol.
Mo xuanyu: who cares if it's Lan lips or not. *hugs xichen* he's still handsome.
Mo xuanyu: *looks up* don't get too full of yourself. I said that you're handsome. Yao gege is still my type, and I'm in love with him.
Xichen: well that's the harem. And I'm ok with it
Yi: we don't even know you!!
Xue yang: wait. But he does look like Lan lips. Omg.
Su she: no. He looks like Lan zhan! Now throw him out!
Xue yang: na. Hou, you know what to do.
Hou: hulijings! Circle formation.
Group of hulijings: *turn into full fox form, then began to run around a  captured Xichen.*
Xichen: I'm telling the truth. I'm Xichen. *sobs* and I'm in love with the hulijing emperor.
Mo xuanyu: well let's wait for him.
Xichen: yay!!
Su she: going to get him in the next half hour.
~~ to be continued.

Aaaah, this preview! I’ve watched Episode 10 at least five times to process it, and I’m still not remotely prepared to watch Episode 11 tomorrow. I had my issues with the lack of tension in Dashing Youth, but the Young Brewmaster’s Adventure has absolutely fixed that problem. There are so many intense developments in the story, and I’m so interested to see how they play out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I really loved Zhuo Sen and Zhuo Luo this episode. A fearsome duo with really fun contrast. It was interesting how even though Zhuo Sen was his senior, Zhuo Luo seemed more the one in charge. I like how Zhuo Luo acted weaker than his was, pretending to be afraid and hanging back to let Zhuo Sen take care of the heavy lifting. An intriguing dynamic, and I wish we got more of them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don’t know what was more shocking, this version of the Abyssal Eye being destroyed or both eunuchs already being killed off. I’m definitely curious how Jin Wei will get his sword now that Zhuo Sen’s is broken. And as for Zhuo Sen and Zhuo Luo being killed, I can’t wait to see what consequences result from it. The stakes have certainly been raised, and I doubt Zhuo Qing will let this one slide.
Tumblr media
Ye Dingzhi as the Eunuch of Sword’s disciple? Well, consider that an AU I’m actually kinda interested in. At best, Dashing Youth’s Ye Dingzhi bored me, but I’m finding that Young Brewmaster’s Ye Dingzhi has far more layers and motivation, to an extent that I find rather compelling. And, so far, his relationship with Yi Wenjun is fairly refreshing.
Tumblr media
The Young Brewmaster donghua is taking such an interesting route with Yi Bu’s character! Overall, Dashing Youth just had him as a flatly-written abusive father who mainly existed to make Yi Wenjun even more miserable. I love the approach Brewmaster is taking in having Yi Bu be the one to betray and kill Ye Dingzhi’s father. It connects Yi Bu to the conflict in a more substantial way, and has the potential to create more tension between him and his daughter beyond the straightforward oppression present in Dashing Youth. Also, I like his hat.
Tumblr media
Anyways, I’m going to be completely normal about the bondage capabilities of Zhuo Luo’s scroll.

“Colleagues?” Leo’s keen eyes analyzed the Asian young man’s face hidden in the shadows, and his brows habitually frowned, “I’ve never seen you before. Which department are you from?”
Luo Yi slowly lifted his face, and his bright and sharp deep-amber eyes stared at the agent, with a slight smile hanging on his lips: “Hello, Leo. We meet again.”
Leo’s body trembled, like some kind of electricity suddenly flowed into his body. He examined the man in front of him with surprise and vigilance, as if he wanted to strip the other man of his seamless disguise.
After a few seconds of silence, he squeezed a name out of his teeth, “… Sha Qing!”
I was waiting for them to meet again.

You know, there’s something that really bothers me when I watch a Chinese BL and that’s the cancellation of the upcoming season. I mean, I can accept the fact that I won’t have a second season of Addicted or Like Love, but this drama was a drama that needed a second season.
YanDaiXie Street No.10 is BL “comedy”. Liang Ze, a successful novelist, and Hang Hang, a pet store owner, are brought together by their love for animals, but especially by Liang Ze incessant questions about his adored chinchillas (that in some translations are called Hamsters... o.o )
As always, I tried to put the less spoilers it was possible in the review, but some might have escaped me, so please stay careful as you read.
I think I should stop going into BL unknowingly. I didn’t bother about reading the summary, but even if I did, I probably wouldn’t have been prepared for this drama. I mean, maybe it was my interpretation of the beginning, but I thought it was really cringy, especially when the whole “gay” topic was brought up. As many BL who involve a man that is said to be heterosexual and one who is homosexual, it relies a lot on misunderstandings. What was probably the best in this drama was that it was short. The progression was fine (like it wasn’t the best, but it wasn’t the worst) and it had really few lengths. The BL was quite fluffy and the issues it treated about were quite realistic. That aside, this web series had a lot of downfall. It revolved a lot around animals, which wasn’t bad, but didn’t seem to really make progress the story. Even though the story is quite short, it contains a tone of drama. Especially the two last episodes… Like, knowing there won’t be a second season, I really didn’t need these two episodes who were filled with drama and indecision. For what it was of the two special episodes of ten minutes, they didn’t add much to the original story. They surely weren’t necessary. At the opposite of the special of Falling in Love With the Rival, it didn’t seem to close the drama. It just left it even more open.
As any web series, you shouldn’t expect much from the characters. The both of them are quite usual and superficial. Liang Ze is the innocent, but odd person, while Hang Hang is a forceful sweetheart that is yearning for love. But they were kind of cute together (during the brief moment they were together, can you hear my sadness), even though Liang Ze was so confused. I’ve seen a few dramas who involved a heterosexual x homosexual couple (Addicted being one of them, as well as Beloved Enemy [in that case, it isn’t a drama, but a book/radio drama] and Make it Right the Series.), but once the heterosexual thinks he’s in love with the homosexual character, he’s in love, not like Liang Ze who doesn’t know. Aside from the leads, there were a lot of annoying and small characters like the editor or the photographer, but I don’t even want to talk about them. I’m fed up.
I’ll conclude there. The plot would be worth a 7/10. The characters a 2/5. The tearjerker factor a 2/5 because I had too much feels involved in Hang Hang and he ends up being badly hurt by Liang Ze.

Name changes between TYK and SHL
So, after finishing the show, I have a lot to say on the differences between the two. So much in fact that I can’t possibly type it all up in one go, so I’ve decided to slowly chip away at it instead. Starting from something simple: characters whose names were changed in adaptation.
Wen Kexing – Zhen Yan
In SHL, Wen Kexing’s birth name is ‘Zhen Yan’. In the novel, ‘Wen Kexing’ is his one and only name.
Emperor Helian Yi – Prince Jin
Aside from him being the person Tian Chuang and Zhou Zishu work for, and the lines from TYK’s chapter 1 that made it to SHL’s episode 1, his motivations and personality are starkly different between the two. Helian Yi also doesn’t appear in the novel past chapter 1; all of Prince Jin’s and Tian Chuang’s further involvement with the plot are show-only.
Liang Jiuxiao - Qin Jiuxiao
In SHL, Zhou Zishu’s late shidi is his master’s son; in the novels, he is just a random kid that his master dumped on him to teach. Novel Jiuxiao also doesn’t have any romantic entanglements with anyone (unless you read his feelings for his shixiong as romantic, but that’s open for interpretation and you can read it as perfectly platonic too), and his ‘happiest dream’ was to travel jianghu with Zhou Zishu; in SHL however, he is involved with military governor’s daughter and his dream is to take her back to the Four Seasons manor.
Xi Sang Gui: Sun Ding - Luo Fumeng
It’s not obvious since the title got translated differently between novel and show, but ‘Delighted Mourning Ghost’ and ‘Tragicomic Ghost’ are actually the same title, Xi Sang Gui. However, the characters bearing it are completely different. Novel’s Xi Sang Gui is a man named Sun Ding, one of the most prominent Ghosts in the Valley and long-time rival to Xue Fang the Hanged Ghost. Later it turns out that his success is due to being secretly aided by Wen Kexing, who used him as a pawn to keep other big name Ghosts busy with infighting. Show’s Xi Sang Gui is a woman named Luo Fumeng, protector of women in the Ghost Valley and the person who helped Wen Kexing keep his life when his parents were killed.
Princess Jing'an: Feng Xiaoshu - daughter of the military governor Li
Another character who is completely different aside from sharing the title. In Qi Ye, Princess Jing’an is a daughter of a famous general; when the capital is under a threat of invasion, she requests the Emperor’s permission to join the army in place of her father, and gets command of an army defending one of the capital’s gates. She is proficient with spear and saber, and known for her life-staking battle style. In TYK, she is mentioned to have married He Yunxing (member of Helian Yi’s party, and also one of the generals who defended the capital) and moved to Northwest border with him (presumably to stymie the possibility of another invasion). In SHL, Princess Jing’an is a daughter of the military governor killed in episode 1, and Qin Jiuxiao’s intended. She dies in episode 1 after drinking poison given to her by Zhou Zishu.
Liu Qianqiao: Green Vixen - Beauty Ghost
In TYK, Liu Qianqiao is not affiliated with the Ghost Valley at all, so she doesn’t have the title of ‘Beauty Ghost’ and is only known as ‘Green Vixen’. Her reputation is that of a serial killer who murders men and avoids capture by using disguises. Her story with Yu Qiufeng is also different: he had casually fooled around with her in their youth, but she sincerely fell for him and kept him in her heart ever since. During the events of the novel, he takes advantage of her feelings to protect himself by using her as a scapegoat. Yu Qiufeng’s wife never played any role in their relationship in the novel. In the show, Liu Qianqiao’s loyalties are split between Yu Qiufeng and Tragicomic Ghost, who saved her after Yu Qiufeng’s wife harmed and humiliated her. She also works for the Scorpion for a while in exchange for their lives.
Other:
I’m pretty sure Cao Weining’s shishu (martial uncle) has a different surname in SHL, but I might be misremembering. In the novel, his name is Mo Huaikong.
There are also many changes to secondary characters’ titles/nicknames, sect names, and names of techniques, but I gave up on tracking those after a few epsiodes. From the top of my head, Zhang family’s martial school is known as ‘South River manor’ in the novel but became ‘Mirror Lake sect’ in the show, ‘Four Seasons manor’ became ‘Four Seasons mountain manor’, and Gao Chong’s martial school is only known as ‘Gao family’s manor’ in the novel but became ‘Yueyang sect’ in the show. All of those have no bearing on the plot though, so I don’t think they would be of much interest to anyone.

Time for some BL/Danmei novel recs!
You guys have probably (maybe) seen my novels list here - [X] - but it’s more for my own tracking than anything else, so here’s a brief list (I’ll probably do full ones of the ones I really love in another post, probably on Minmo).
The ones elaborated on below with the asterisks are the novels I’ve actually finished reading.
*since everyone more or less knows MXTX’s works - TGCF, MDZS and SVSSS, I’ll skip those!
1. SCI 迷案集 | SCI Mystery Series by 耳雅*
Summary: Bai Yutang and Zhan Zhao are childhood friends and rivals that end up working together under the newly established SCI unit as co-leads, with Bai Yutang providing the brawn as Captain and Zhan Zhao the brains as Vice Captain and the team’s resident genius psychologist. They solve cases together and slowly unravel a wider conspiracy that involves their parents’ generation and beyond. At the same time they also realize that they’re meant for each other!
Other CPs: Bai Jintang (Bai Yutang’s older brother) & the medical examiner, Gongsun Ce, Bai Chi (Bai Yutang’s younger cousin) & magician Zhao Zhen, and at least three other gay pairings, one of which is considered another main couple of sorts from Vol. 2 onwards
Status: Incomplete (Began in 2010, author is still going on strong with one chapter every one or two months, we’re halfway through Vol. 5 right now and it’s been 10 years ;-; Love that the author is going on strong!! Everyone on JJWXC are like “please author it’s okay if you go slow as long as you keep going we’re here for you” and jfc I understand the fear of this not completing, also when will Vol. 5 be completed and printed?!! I need to complete the collection)
Translations: Unfortunately, only the first volume has been translated well so far on novel updates. The one on Wattpad seems to have caught up, but I would not recommend that one.
Drama/Live-Action: Season 1 was filmed and released in 2018 under the same name with slightly changed names for the characters. Season 2 was supposed to start filming this month but... oh well. First season basically covered Vol. 1 novel from start to end.
*I love this one only because it was my very first danmei and so it’ll forever have a special place in my heart, and also because it’s still ongoing so ya know, I relive how much I love this every month
2. 成化十四年 | Cheng Hua’s Fourteenth Year (The Sleuth of Ming Dynasty) by 梦溪石*
Summary: Tang Fan, a prefectural judge, and Sui Zhou, a high ranking officer in the Embroidered Uniform Guards, meet while trying to solve a murder case. Both of them end up partnering very well together, Sui Zhou ends up inviting Tang Fan to live with him, and the rest is history. Through their days living together and solving cases + a larger conspiracy involving the royal palace, they fall in love. Adding to this mix is also Wang Zhi, a powerful, young eunuch who befriends the pair, and the three of them basically help the crown prince to overcome challenges and his enemies to become the next Emperor
Other CPs: None XD
Status: Complete!
Translations: Ongoing on several websites. I’m only translating relationship highlights, but here’s an introduction post I did for it, if you guys would like somewhere to start without getting too invested - [X]
Drama/Live-Action: The Sleuth of Ming Dynasty was released earlier this year, directed by Jackie Chan and starring Darren Chen and Paul Fu, but cases are a little different and there are new characters in the show that weren’t from the novel etc.
3. 杀破狼 | Shapolang by Priest*
Summary: Set in a steampunk universe where flying boats named ‘kites’ and flying armour exist. Young teenager Chang Geng lives with his mother and stepfather - the former abuses him and the latter neglects him, and the only person that he cares about (and cares about him) is Shen Shiliu, his (very young) godfather. He realizes his identity as a royal prince when the Man tribe invades his city and Shen Shiliu, whose real name is Gu Yun, turns out to be an army general whose duty was to protect Chang Geng in secret (among other things).
Chang Geng has been critically poisoned by his mother (who’s not actually his birth mother, if I recall she’s an aunt) which leads to him getting terrible dreams frequently with the end result of him being driven into insanity, while Gu Yun is half blind, half deaf due to poisoning + injury when he was much younger, and he can only regain his hearing and sight fully when he takes a medicine that is slowly losing its effectiveness with every dosage he has.
The both of them navigate learning about each other again, falling in love a few years later when Chang Geng is all grown up and also unravel conspiracies and fight bad guys (both external threats and internal as in the current Emperor and other parties) XD
*Note: The age old debate is that Gu Yun ‘preyed’ on and also ‘groomed’ Chang Geng, but I disagree and stand by the fact that Gu Yun was 90% of the time not around while Chang Geng grew from a teenager to a young adult as he was fighting wars elsewhere, while Chang Geng refused to stay at the Gu manor and insisted on running around, travelling on his own and seeing the world for a few years before they met again. And it was Chang Geng who’d always loved Gu Yun and devoted himself to caring about him, making advances on him etc. when he became an adult
Other CPs: Shen Yi (Gu Yun’s second-in-command) & Chen Qingxu (a renowned physician who ends up healing both Chang Geng and Gu Yun of their ailments)
Status: Complete!
Translations: Fully translated the last I heard, it’s up there in the list of holy grail BL/danmei novels, so I’m sure it’s done hahaha.
Drama/Live-Action: Filming in progress!
*This is up there in the hall of fame for danmei novels for more than just the amazing content and writing - It’s also famous for being one of the most complex novels ever. I don’t know how the translations team did it because DAMN it was complex and I read all my novels in Chinese without much issues but I was honestly STRUGGLING WITH this one and I went through some existential crisis while reading because I was like ‘did I ever learn Chinese, am I even Chinese’ XD
4. 默读 | Silent Reading by Priest*
Summary: Luo Wenzhou, a police captain, and his team including best friend and partner Tao Ran, face a few challenging cases that end up being small parts of a larger conspiracy, and end up having to consult with Fei Du, a flamboyant, charming and flirty, young and rich CEO, who Luo Wenzhou describes as someone who is an expert at ‘crimes’. Not deduction, not solving crimes, but someone who is familiar with how the murderer or culprits would commit crimes. Both Luo Wenzhou and Tao Ran know Fei Du well, because they first met when Fei Du was in high school, when he called the police because his mother had hanged herself in the house, and since then Tao Ran and Luo Wenzhou look out for him, spending holidays with him, giving him presents here and there. Luo Wenzhou and Fei Du overcome their misunderstandings of each other and fall in love while solving all the cases and the larger conspiracy behind it.
Other CPs: Tao Ran and someone he knew first from his school days or was a neighbour when he was younger, I can’t remember, but they meet again at a blind date and end up living in the same building on different floors XD
Status: Complete!
Translations: Complete!! There’s a huge post floating around on Tumblr with all the links (I can’t find it right now) and on Twitter you can also find the collated, epub versions etc.
Drama/Live-Action: Rights for a live-action was signed, no casting confirmation or set dates yet
5. 犯罪心理 | Criminal Psychology by 长洱*
Summary: Police captain Xing Conglian drags psychologist Lin Chen out of seclusion/hiding to solve a case that is indirectly tied to him. Lin Chen was involved in a case a few years ago that led to four deaths - these four victims were the sons/daughters of four of the five huge old-money (super rich) families in the country and these family members sought to make Lin Chen’s life very difficult for him afterwards by making him lose all the jobs he can find, by surveilling his every move and ensuring that he’s not happy etc. Because of that, he backed out of the police force as well and quietly lived as a school dorm administrator, which is where Xing Conglian finds him a few years later. Lin Chen fakes his death after the first case (not deliberately but kind of a by-the-way thing), but as fate would have it, he ends up meeting Xing Conglian on another case, and he decides that he’ll move in with him and also involve himself again, consequences be damned, and they fall in love!
Other CPs: None XD
Status: Complete!
Translations: I think it’s not complete yet.
Drama/Live-Action: None that I know of.
6. 死亡万花筒 | Kaleidoscope of Death by 西子绪* (MY ABSOLUTE FAVOURITE)
Summary: Supernatural setting where people who are about to die get a second chance to live. These individuals are either in the midst of a dangerous situation (for e.g. a shootout or a deadly mugging incident) or are about to get into accidents (for e.g. an entire bus going off a bridge or a chandelier dropping from above and crushing the person underneath) or are ill (recently diagnosed with cancer or are terminally ill with a condition for e.g.) - The list is endless, and in the situation between life and death, 12 doors will appear before them.
It is said that once these individuals finish all 12 doors, they will truly get a second chance at life and survive whatever cause of death they were imminently facing.
Each door represents a creepy, supernatural mystery, and Lin Qiushi finds himself in a strange place after opening a door when he was trying to enter his apartment one day. He meets Ruan Baijie, a beautiful, tall woman who he happens to meet, and they realize that in this strange world, he and other individuals who came through the door have to complete a given task, find a key and an exit door, and make it out alive. The others in the team (some of which have already gone through several doors) explain to Lin Qiushi, who is a first-timer, what the doors are about.
The catch is, if they die inside the door, in the real world, they’ll die immediately, by accident, throwing themselves off a building, or just throwing up blood until they die (just to name a few)
On the first night, however, three people are slaughtered and eaten by a long-haired ghost/creature. The good news is, Ruan Baijie isn’t all that she seems to be (for one, she’s not exactly a woman) and she takes a liking to Lin Qiushi immediately.
Other CPs: None XD
Status: Complete!
Translations: I think it’s not complete yet!
Drama/Live-Action: None that I know of, but honestly, this novel would be fricking EPIC as a live-action, and really creepy, but this is my all-time favourite novel, I kid you not!!!!
*I’m definitely doing a longer and more detailed to-read for KOD on my translation account, gosh you guys have no idea how much I love this.
7. 当年万里觅封侯 | Those Years in Quest of Honor Mine by 漫漫何其多
Summary: Yu She and Gu Wan were close friends for a short period of time when they were younger, but unfortunately their identities and positions meant that they were opponents. Yu She’s family was for the Second Prince and Gu Wan was taken in by the Sixth Prince’s family, but in the end it was the Second Prince who ended up getting to the throne, while the Sixth Prince was accused of treason and died somewhere far away at war after being captured. Gu Wan’s only wish was to keep the Fifth Prince’s children - Xuan Rui and a pair of twins, Xuan Yu and Xuan Congxin safe, and so he moves them to another province and asks the Emperor (the Second Prince) to demote Xuan Rui’s status to prove that they are no threat to the Emperor, if only to stay alive for another day.
However, their days of hardship have only just begun, and Gu Wan decides to namedrop Yu She, whose family is so powerful now, and claims that Yu She loves him and that he was wooing Gu Wan back in the days they knew each other so that officials and others would treat the children under his care better. A few years pass and Yu She doesn’t expose Gu Wan. Gu Wan thinks they can go on like this forever, until the Emperor asks Xuan Rui and the twins to head back to the palace for a visit.
Gu Wan meets Yu She again, but the boy he knew, who was gentle, a stickler for rules and a proper, well-mannered person, has changed almost completely. Cue palace conspiracies again, brothers fighting for the throne, scheming consorts etc. XD
Other CPs: None XD
Status: Complete!
Translations: I think it’s not complete yet but I’m not super sure on this
Drama/Live-Action: None that I know of!
*They came out with a new reprint edition three days ago and it’s gorgeous! And comes with amazing freebies, and I am a sucker and read it on the day of the printed novel release because I saw the art and loved it, wanted to see if the story was any good, and damn after chapter 2 I WAS GONE and then I checked out two copies from different stores for the two different sets of freebies
--
A list of those I haven’t read but I see are highly raved about:
1. 二哈和他的白猫师尊 | The Husky & His White Cat Shizun by Meatbun
- I’ve already been spoiled and I know what goes on mostly, and there are a lot of warnings for a reason, but I’m still a fan, and let’s not get into the debate on the content, I know I have to read this but the angst level is apparently ridiculous, so I need like some mental preparation before I sit down for it.
2. 千秋 | A Thousand Autumns by 梦溪石
3. 烈火浇愁 | Lie Huo Jiao Chou by Priest
4. 将进酒 | Qiang Jing Jiu by 唐酒卿
- A really good group of translators picked this up initially on Twitter, but then assholes were complaining that they were being too slow and insisting that machine translation (MTL) did an equally good and faster job, so the OG dropped it, and then another nice team picked it up, but MTL team is still being an asshole XD I’ve heard really good things about this one, it’s apparently quite complex as well, I’d liken it to Shapolang level? But it might be even more complex (with a lot of politics and stuff), so much so that apparently the printed novel comes with a relationship/character chart so readers are at any point in time clear on the characters which is like amazing XD

Tian Ya Ke/Word of Honor Art Reblogs
Welcome to TYK Art Reblogs, a sideblog by @unforth. I reblog (almost) all art I see for the fandom. Feel free to ping me if you need anything!
If you see me reblog a repost, please let me know so I can delete it - reposts are never okay! I do reblog “reposted with permission” posts of artists on other platforms. I have made a good faith effort to not reblog reposts, but obviously mistakes happen - when they do, let me know, and I will correct the mistake by deleting the reblog in question. This blog is very lightly moderated; I tag artist, character(s), ship(s), and common trigger warnings.
Enjoy, and make sure you support artists with likes and reblogs!

A Covid/modern warfare inspired poem from ancient China
Tumblr media
I used to translate Chinese poems on here years ago but stopped after a while as Chinese culture hadn’t really caught on then. Maybe I’ll start doing this again, just because English translations and analysis of ancient Chinese poems are so hard to come by. I found one post-war poem that is pretty befitting for the current Covid/modern warfare situation so thought I’d share.
Tumblr media
《春行即兴》 - 李华
宜阳城下草萋萋,涧水东流复向西。
芳树无人花自落,春山一路鸟空啼。
Pinyin:
yí yáng chéng xià cǎo qī qī,jiàn shuǐ dōng liú fù xiàng xī
fāng shù wú rén huā zì luò,chūn shān yī lù niǎo kōng tí
Vernacular translation:
Impromptu in spring - by Li Hua
Under Yi Yang city, the greenery is lush
The ravine flows East but turns Westward again
There is no one amongst the fragrant trees; flowers bloom and wither alone
Along the mountain path imbued in spring colours, the birds sing silently
Analysis:
The poem was written by Tang Dynasty literati Li Hua. In year 755, general An Lushan of Tang mobilised his army to launch a rebellion against Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, establishing the short lived Yan Dynasty. With support from the Uyghur Khaganate and Abbasid Caliphate, Yan was eventually overthrown, however the Tang Dynasty was severely weakened. The poem was written shortly after rebel forces had been quashed, albeit leaving the scars of war behind across the land.
Yi Yang city (宜阳城) was a strategically important city in the Tang period, where the largest temporary imperial abode Lian Chang Palace (连昌宫) was located. You can also find Nüji Mountain (女几山) there, where the famous Huaguo Mountain (花果山) from Journey to the West originally derived from. The mountain was renowned for its spectacular natural beauty and attracted many members of the imperial family, nobility, literati and artists daily. However after the rebellion, it had been largely destroyed, leaving most of the city barren. Yi Yang city is in modern day Yi Yang County, Henan Province.
Author pov: Li Hua writes this impromptu poem after visiting Yi Yang city in springtime. He sees the large expanse of wasteland covered in wild grass and laments at how there are no more farmers there irrigating Luo River to grow crops, causing it to flow Westward. Though barren and deserted, Nüji Mountain still puts on a full display of mesmerising spring colours and scents, however there is no one there to admire them. In stillness, nature is left to its own devices. The scenery is as poetic as ever, however one can only hear the birds calling skyward solitarily.
I got shivers reading this poem, as it reminded me of all the beautiful nature we would have appreciated this year if it hadn’t been for Covid-19. All the scenery, history, art and culture the world would have bowed down to if it wasn’t for wars in the Middle East, Africa and Central Asia. As we enter 2021, all these ‘what ifs’ seem to hang in limbo, hauntingly beautiful but ever so unobtainable. One can only hope that the scars of war will eventually heal - nature is ever present and reminds us of hope, renewal and restoration.
Cursive calligraphy by Huang Jun Shi.
