Celebrating Black Queer Icons:

Lucy Hicks Anderson

Lucy Hicks Anderson was born in 1886 in Waddy, Kentucky. Anderson is known as a socialite and chef that became well known in Oxnard, California from 1920 to 1946. She became the first black trans woman to defend her identity in a US courts. From an early age Anderson identified as a girl. On advice from doctors, Anderson's parents accepted and supported this. Anderson would attend school in gender affirming clothing, such as dresses, under a name of her own choosing, Lucy. At the age of 15 Anderson left school and began supporting herself through domestic work. At 20 Anderson moved to Pecos, Texas where she worked in a hotel. Anderson next moved to New Mexico, where she met her first husband, Clarence Hicks, in 1920. At age 34 Anderson, and her then husband, moved to Oxnard, California. Anderson proved herself a skilled chef and baker, winning some contests. Anderson's marriage to Hicks eventually ended in divorce. After which Anderson used money she had saved during the marriage to purchase a boarding house. The boarding house served as a front for a brothel, and the sale of alcohol during prohibition. Outside her time as a Madame and managing a boarding house, Anderson also became a well known socialite and hostess. Connections made during this time would prove fruitful during Anderson's subsequent legal troubles. It is said that Charles Donlon, a prominent banker, helped get her out of jail, after her initial arrest, on the grounds that he was hosting a significant dinner party that would have fallen apart without Anderson's involvement. In 1944 Anderson married her second husband, Reuben Anderson. About a year later, in 1945, a sailor claimed to have received a sexually transmitted infection from one of the women working in Anderson's brothel. This led to all women working there being subject to medical examination, including Anderson. When the Ventura County DA was informed that Anderson was assigned male at birth he chose to charge her with perjury on her marriage license. During this trial Anderson would utter the famous lines "I defy any doctor in the world to prove that I am not a woman." and "I have lived, dressed, acted just what I am, a woman". Anderson was ultimately convicted of perjury and sentenced to 10 years probation and her marriage license was deemed invalid. This also led to the Federal Government to charge Anderson with fraud, based on her receiving spousal rights from the GI Bill. Lucy and Reuben Anderson where both found guilty and sentenced to a men's prison. Anderson was forbidden by the court to wear women's clothing during this time. After their release Lucy and Reuben Anderson moved to Los Angeles, California where they lived quietly until her death in 1954, at the age of 68. Debra A Harley and Pamela B Teaster's (editors) Handbook of LGBT Elders (link to Archive.org copy of text) notes Anderson as "one of the earliest documented cases of an African-American transgender person". Anderson is the subject of the 2nd episode of HBO's Equal, where she is portrayed by actress Alexandra Grey.

This was definitely one of the more informative of these write ups, for me. I was familiar with both the quotes Anderson made during her trial, but didnt know anything about the woman. Wilmer "Little Axe" Broadnax has been mentioned in several of these end notes, so he is definitely next. I think i pretty much have the rest of these planned out, but as always, corrections and suggestions are welcome and desired.

Who is Lucxi?

On the afternoon of September 8, 1992, a motorist came across a young woman dancing on the meridian of a busy street in Port Hueneme, California. When he stopped to help her, he began asking her questions. However, she could not understand him. He realized that she was mute and hearing impaired. Fearing for her safety, he took her to the Ventura County police station. The police tried to question her, but she was unable to communicate with them. The only clue to her identity was a receipt for a bank in San Diego, 200 miles to the south. The police had no reason to detain the young woman, so she was released. The next day, a police officer came upon her, wandering along a busy street again. She appeared to be terribly confused. This time, she was placed in a homeless shelter for women. At first, she was unable to formally communicate with anyone. The only thing she could do was pantomime, mimic, and use "home sign language". Communication specialist Chris Barrows was brought in to help communicate with her. Chris first tried to determine the woman's name. He and Marti Ruble, the shelter supervisor, wrote their names down and gestured to themselves. They then asked her to either write down or communicate her name to them. She apparently understood and began to make hand symbols in the form of letters. Chris wrote down the letters, which spelled the name "Lucxi". When she saw this, she had an instant positive reaction and recognition, which led Chris to believe that this was her name. Lucxi is believed to be the derivative of a Spanish first name. For convenience sake, they dubbed her "Lucy". The next thing they tried to do was determine Lucy's age. They were able to determine through hand gestures that she was twenty-three. Despite the ease of which they determined her name and age, finding someone who knew her would present a far greater challenge. In the days and weeks after she surfaced in Port Hueneme, the FBI and various missing persons organizations ran checks on her. However, all turned up empty. The only solid lead was the receipt found in her pocket; however, that also led nowhere. Authorities now find themselves at a dead end. Over the following few months, Lucy slowly began to reveal fragmentary glimpses into her past. She claimed that she had flown on a plane to California, had a child, and had it taken from her. She was then left alone. She appeared to be well cared for. Although she does not have cooking skills, she understands to come and eat when it is time to do so. She also has normal grooming habits, such as the ability to brush her hair and clean herself. Chris does not believe that she was on the streets for long before she was found. Lucy has brown hair and brown eyes. She appears to be in her early twenties (in 1993). Her ethnic background is uncertain, although she may have been born in Mexico.  Her case is unsolved. In 1993, Lucy left the shelter and vanished. In December, she was found in Cotati. She had a small amount of methamphetamine with her at the time. Doctors later determined that she actually could hear but had the mental age of a nine-year-old. Soon afterward, she vanished again. According to some sources, as of May 1, 2014, Lucy was homeless and living in Santa Paula, California. She communicated with grunts and hand gestures and could often be seen walking around town with a stroller full of junk. She had also been witnessed by local Santa Paulans speaking clear English and asking for small sums of money. These sightings, however, have not been confirmed.

“Un sommergibile giapponese ci mise due siluri dentro la pancia. Stavamo tornando dall’isola di Tinian, avevamo portato la bomba, quella che scoppiò a Hiroshima. 1.100 uomini finirono in mare… la nave affondò in 12 minuti. Il primo squalo si fece vivo dopo una mezz’ora, un tigre di 4 metri. Sai da cosa ti accorgi se uno squalo è grosso quando sei in acqua? Dalla distanza fra la pinna dorsale e la coda.

Noi non lo sapevamo, ma la nostra missione era talmente segreta che non era neanche stato mandato l’S.O.S. Per una settimana non si accorsero che eravamo spariti. Insomma, alle prime luci cominciarono ad arrivare gli squali. Noi ci eravamo riuniti in gruppi stretti, una specie di quei quadrati che si fanno nelle battaglie, quelli che si vedono nelle stampe della battaglia di Waterloo.

L’idea era che quando uno squalo si avvicinava a un uomo, quello si mettesse ad agitare l’acqua gridando a squarciagola. Qualche volta lo squalo se ne va, qualche volta non se ne va per niente, ti fissa dritto negli occhi. Sai che cos’hanno di strano gli squali? Hanno degli occhi senza vita, sono palle nere senza luce dentro, e quando qualcuno ti si avvicina non credi neanche che sia vivo, finché non ti morde.

Quelle palle nere cominciano a roteare e poi… a un tratto senti un urlo acutissimo e terribile, e l’acqua intorno diventa rossa… e in mezzo a quella schiuma e a quel casino ti arrivano tutti addosso… e cominciano a farti a pezzi. Insomma, quella prima mattinata (ansima) perdemmo 100 uomini. Non so quanti fossero, forse 1.000 squali, si mangiavano una media di 6 uomini ogni ora.

Giovedì mattina capitai accanto a un mio amico, un certo Harby Robinson, di Cleveland, un giocatore di baseball, era il nostromo… Credevo che dormisse… allungai un braccio per svegliarlo e lui si capovolse come una specie di trottola galleggiante… era a metà.

Eh sì, se l’erano mangiato vivo dalla cintola in giù. A metà del quinto giorno, un Lokid Ventura ci avvistò, passò a bassa quota e ci vide, era un pilota giovane, molto più giovane del signor Hooper. Comunque ci avvistò e venne a guardare, e tre ore dopo arrivò finalmente un grosso PTY che cominciò a raccoglierci… e vi giuro che quello fu il momento in cui ebbi più paura mentre aspettavo il mio turno.

Non mi metterò più un salvagente addosso. Insomma, eravamo finiti in mare in più di 1.000 e uscimmo in 316, gli altri se li erano mangiati gli squali, era il 29 giugno del ’45. Comunque, avevamo consegnato la bomba.“
